I noticed him for the first time sitting at a table with another guy. They were whispering a little too loudly about something they found amusing. I caught them looking at my desk a few times, probably waiting for me to admonish them for making noise in the library. Working there, you see all sorts of people from day to day. Some came in for information on a project for school or work, while others to find a book to read or to merely enjoy the quiet relaxing atmosphere. Glancing at his well-defined profile, I wondered why he was here. There was something about him, aside from his apparent handsomeness that intrigued me. I stole another glimpse at the man. He had straight blueblack hair that fell to his collar. There was a mischievous look in his eyes that made me wonder about what they’d been discussing. I soon had to put all thoughts about him aside when a lady approached my desk needing help. A student who needed to find information on Australian marsupials followed her. By the time I had finished helping both, he and his friend were gone. I didn’t expect to see him again, but I was wrong. The following day my heart nearly skipped a beat when he approached my desk.

“Excuse me, I don’t know if you remember me, but I was here yesterday with a friend…” “I do remember you.”
How could I forget someone like you?
“Is there
something I can help you with? “No, not really.
I just want to apologize for the noise we made.”
His eyes caught and held mine. I noticed they were gray and rimmed by thick black lashes. “It really wasn’t that bad.” “That makes me feel a great deal better.” “I’m glad.” He gave me a brilliant smile before he walked away. I watched him leave, now more curious about the man than before. He seemed pleasant enough. In fact, everything about him seemed pleasing. He had clean-cut good looks and was dressed well in a blue blazer and slacks. I noticed he wasn’t wearing a wedding band, but that didn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t married. I realized some men never wore their rings because they didn’t like to wear jewelry and of course there were those who hid the fact that they were married for entirely different reasons. My curiosity had to be temporarily shelved when a man, looking for a particular book on dogs, asked for my assistance. *** The next day the handsome guy returned. He caught my attention and waved.
This time he brought a laptop with him and used it for forty-five
minutes before he waved goodbye and left. He returned every day for an entire week, but said nothing until Friday when he walked over to my desk. Standing patiently on the side waiting until I finished helping a woman with her research, I could feel the heat of his eyes studying me intently. A tremor inside me heated my inner core.

“Hello, again,” he said. “You know, I feel like we’re friends and yet I don’t even know your name. “Mine is Adam Temple. Please tell me yours.” “Sarah. Sarah Williams.” “Thank you. Would you like to have coffee with me some time, Sarah Williams?” “I…I don’t usually go out for coffee with strangers.” “But we’re no longer strangers. We’ve introduced ourselves.” I gave out a short chuckle. “What would you have done had I not told you my name?” “Found it out another way. So what do you say?” “Hard work should be rewarded. Okay,” I said nodding. “When do you get a break around here?” “Usually, when I’d like one. Pick a time, Adam.” “How about…right now?” I looked at my watch. It was just about time for lunch so I agreed. “Since it’s such a beautiful day, we can have it in the park across the street.” “Just give me five minutes to get someone to cover this desk. I’ll meet you out front.” I was flattered Adam wanted to take me for coffee, but it made no sense to a realist like me. He was such a handsome man. What did he want with a mousy-looking person like me? I heard a faint tiny voice in the back of my head telling me to beware. We spent a wonderful hour in the park. Adam bought us both hotdogs, chips and a soft drink to eat. I discovered he was an accountant for a large corporation close by. And, best of all, he wasn’t married. The man he’d had been with that first day worked with him. His name was Bill and he was a

practical joker who liked to bet on everything. I’d heard about men like Bill who ended up destroying their lives and those of their families because of gambling. Walking me back to the library, Adam said, “I really enjoyed our talk. Would you like to go out tomorrow night—or is it too soon and you’ve already got plans?” “I enjoyed it, too. What did you have in mind?” His handsome face broke into a wide grin. “Do you like to dance?” “Yes, but I can’t remember the last time I went dancing.” “Good. That will make the night special.” Being with you will make it special enough, I thought to myself, hoping the man wasn’t a mind reader. We said our goodbyes and I drifted back to work on cloud nine, wondering when this dream would end or I’d take a wrong move and fall off the cloud. After all, didn’t all good things always come to an end? *** I really wanted to look nice for Adam. The first thing I did was purchase a new outfit. It was a little more stylish than the things I normally wore. Then I made an appointment at the hair dressers. I had my mousy light-brown hair cut and highlighted. It looked nice, but I really felt great when a guy whistled at me as I walked to my car. That had never happened before to me. Now if only Adam liked it… I was putting the finishing touches on my makeup when I heard Adam’s knock at my door. I hardly ever wore makeup so the woman who stared back at me in the mirror was practically a stranger. When I opened the door, Adam’s eyes widened in surprise. “Am I at 23 Vine Street?” I began to laugh.

“What did you do to Sarah? I mean this is much more than I bargained for.” I though that an odd statement to make, but didn’t dwell on it. Instead I took his hand. “Come on in, already, and I’ll get my coat.” He didn’t take his eyes off of me. Finally, as if coming out of a trance, he said, “Sarah, you…you look great!” “Thanks. I was afraid that I’d starve to death before you decided to come in.” “Well, you didn’t prepare me…for you. You’re a knockout.” “You’re acting like you never saw a woman in makeup before.” “Not this woman.” Adam hardly took his eyes off of me in the restaurant. Seeing such a gleam of interest in his eyes made me feel wonderful.
I’d never felt this
marvelous being me before. And what did it take to bring this miracle off, a little makeup, a new hairstyle or was it just the right guy? Afterwards, Adam took me to a nightclub. The band was hot and we danced most of the night away. I was having such a terrific time I forgot to be self-conscious as I normally was about my dancing. “Is there anything you’re not wonderful at?” Adam whispered in my ear during a slow dance. I smiled. He should only know what he was doing to me, holding me as close as he was. I may have been somewhat affected by the drinks we had, but I was totally high on life. This was the type of night I’d often dreamed about, but had long ago given up wishing for. I just prayed for the night to never end, for I feared being changed back to the old me. When the song ended I asked to sit down. “My feet are beginning to complain.”

Adam took one of my legs and gently slipped the shoe off. He deftly began to massage my foot. “Oooh, how delightful!” I purred. Adam began to massage the other one. “If you like that, there’s more tricks up my sleeve,” he replied with a devilish little smile on his face. “Really?” I asked feeling slightly wanton. We went back to my place for a nightcap. Adam was as good as his word and began to massage my shoulder muscles as we sat together on the sofa. “Who taught you how to do that?” I asked succumbing to the warm sensual feeling that was flowing through my body. “Believe it or not, from a book.” “I can relate to that,” I replied grinning, as I leaned into his massaging fingers. He continued to do what he had been doing but added sweet, gentle kisses to the length of my neck. He’d turned my engine on and there was no way I was going to be able to apply the brakes at this point. By the time his hands strayed lower, I was a slave to my own desires. I wanted him to make love to me right then and there. He must have felt something; too, for a moment later, we were in the bedroom peeling off all our clothing which suddenly had gotten in the way. It was a glorious treasure hunt as we each explored each other’s bodies. With each piece of clothing that Adam removed, he left a trail of heated kisses in its place. I desired to be devoured by him by the time he reached my bra. Breathless, and practically crying out for him to free my straining breasts, I nearly fainted with anticipation as he chose to torment me. He kissed the rising globes of my breasts which were now billowing out from their restraint, begging to be touched.

What was good for the goose was good for the gander, I mused as I began to rub his member which was struggling against its own confinement. I heard him give out a pleasurable gasp and continued. He deftly opened my bra and moved it aside before feasting on one breast and then the other. They showed their gratitude by saluting him. He nipped at each hard bud with his teeth, teasing them further. At this point, I felt as if I’d drown in my own wetness. I unzipped his slacks and freed his penis and began to stroke it. A few moments later, Adam shrugged off his pants and shorts. He rolled a condom on to his penis and then gave all his undivided attention back to me. His mouth sought mine and his tongue filled my mouth. Our breaths became one. I ran my hands through his hair and then slipped down to his back. Continuing down, I felt every muscle, every scar until I reached his buttocks. The muscles on his ass were hard and round. Now I knew how it filled his pants so well. Adam’s hands weren’t idle as our kiss heated up the room. He’d slowly run his hands down the sides of my body. He slipped one finger, then two inside my wet core. I rubbed up and down around them. He removed them and I boldly reached for his penis. Slipping into me, his mouth sought mine. We kissed as we began to move. It started out as a slow dance. Every stroke was finely tuned. Within moments, the tempo picked up and we were rocking as he gripped my buttocks and thrust himself into me, withdrawing and then thrusting again. I’d wrapped my legs around his waist. He grabbed one of my breasts, caressed and squeezed it until I was nearly out of my mind from the sensations. Then I felt my body gyrating as one spasm after another took hold of me. I let loose a scream of pleasure. I’d never done such a thing before. I could feel his muscles stiffen momentarily as he reached his own climax.

He collapsed on top of me and we lay like that for a few minutes. I ran my hand through his hair and stroked his back. Adam was so still that I’d thought he’d fallen asleep until I felt his finger outlining the tip of my breast. A renewed tightening in my core began and grew stronger with each stroke. I felt his penis growing, coming to life again. We made love once more that night and he ended up staying the entire weekend. I’d never expected this, but I was learning to accept it and enjoy every precious moment we spent together. I did things with Adam I’d never done before. I never knew how devilishly exciting a mere shower could become. It was as if he’d opened up a new world for me. And I never wanted to leave it. I was already falling in love with Adam. We made plans to be together the following Saturday. I practically wished the week away so I could be with him again. *** That weekend was nearly a carbon copy of the previous one with Adam staying at my place once more. I liked waking in his arms and could get mighty used to it. In fact, since I’d met Adam I felt like the heroine in a fairy tale who’d wakened from a terrible spell by the kiss of a handsome prince. *** Nearly three months had passed and I couldn’t be happier. Suddenly my entire world was transformed into a wonderland filled with such promise. I never wanted it to stop revolving. Adam got tickets to see Acoustic Alchemy in concert, a jazz group who practically brought down the house. They were that terrific. We’d had an early dinner before the show and a late snack after at his place, which I’d never been to before. We usually ended up at mine. As we stood in the doorway, I realized

why. He wasn’t much of a housekeeper. However, I knew just the woman who could remedy that. Did I mention we ate the snack in bed, washing it down with wine? Adam could never realize what he’d done for me as a woman. He brought out what inner beauty I had hidden inside and made me whole. And I wanted the chance to show my gratitude by giving him all my love for the rest of my life. That night was merely an example of the feelings I had for Adam inside. I initiated the lovemaking. Wanting to further spice up the fantastic sex we already had, I’d brought along with me some props to use. I’d done some extra reading, as well. “What are you up to?” Adam asked, eyebrows raised, as he watched me take some silk scarves from my purse. “Trust me.” “Hmm…I’m not so sure I want to.” I gave him one helluva kiss, thrusting my tongue deep into his mouth as I pawed his already growing erection. “Will I get more of that?” “Much more, baby,” I purred, tying his first wrist to the headboard and then the other. I tested his restraints before slowly removing his clothes. By the time I’d slid his jeans down; his manhood was at full mast. I had to smile knowing it was all for me. However, it became more of a devilish grin as I thought about what I intended to do to him.
One term came to mind: exquisite torture.
As I
undressed to the sexy underwear I’d gotten for this occasion, I could hardly wait to begin. He could hardly take his eyes from the lacy demi bra, garter belt and stockings I wore.

I took a large feather out from my purse. Adam’s eyes opened as wide as saucers when he saw that. “What are you going to do with that?” he asked, his tone revealing his innermost fears to me. “Don’t tell me you’re ticklish?” I said as I lightly ran the feather down his chest. He squirmed and pulled at his restraints. “Stop!…Please…no more…” “But I’m just getting started,” I said, my voice filled with laughter ignoring his plight. I continued to brush the feather along his chest and up and down his arms, ignoring his pitiful sounds. It was funny how I could reduce a strong man to a groveling gel-like creature with a single feather. “I don’t know how much more I can take…oooh, no more…” Down the length of his long, hairy legs I went, up and down, slowly measuring every move. His eyes were wedged closed tightly and I hadn’t even reached my destination yet. Almost there don’t rush, I counseled myself. I began to tease his rod mercilessly, making every stroke count.
Poor Adam
looked as if he were dying. I figured he’d had enough and put away the feather. He gave out a huge sigh of relief. I got on all fours and leaned over to kiss his lips. I lingered on them for a moment before kissing the hollow of his neck and ears.
Then, straddling him, I slowly planted kisses down his chest.
I
tongued and nipped his small, tight nipples, getting another gasp out of him. From there I traveled to his navel where I let my tongue do all the work. That got a rise out of him. And he damn nearly connected with me. That’s when I realized I’d dropped too close to him. I moved my body down past his. “Are you finished torturing me yet?”

My answer was to clamp my mouth around the swollen head of his manhood. I slid up and down; taking him in as far as I could as I held his balls. That he liked. I continued to lick and suck his penis until he climaxed. Not being an expert in the art of giving a blowjob, I tried to swallow all of his love juice, but of course, some of it escaped my mouth and dripped down. “That was beautiful, baby,” Adam said after he’d come back down from his sexual high. “I’m glad you liked it and hope you’re not angry about what I did to you.” “Cut me loose and I’ll show you how I feel.” I untied him quickly and he pushed me down underneath him. For a split second, I wasn’t certain if he was angry or not. When he began to kiss me, I felt relieved. It was a passionate kiss that would have knocked my socks off—had I been wearing any. Instead it stoked the simmering fire in my furnace. Adam ran his tongue and hands down the length of my body. When he got down to my thighs, he slowly ran his tongue on the tender, sensitive skin making me squirm. Even though it was damn pleasurable, I couldn’t help but think he was evening up the score. Finally, he stopped and nestled his tongue on my clit. Lifting my buttocks up, he sucked and licked me until I felt the first tremor coming on. I moaned as my entire body pulsated with one wave of pleasure after another. That had been a night to remember.
I’d gotten up the courage to
experiment and it certainly paid off. My last thought before falling asleep was where it might lead us. *** The following morning persistent knocking on the door waked us. Adam whispered, “I’ll just see who it is and get rid of them,” he said, planting a kiss on my forehead.

But I was already awake and needed to use the bathroom. Getting out of bed, I could hardly miss what was being said since the voices carried. It was Bill. I heard him apologize for waking Adam. “I didn’t realize you had company. Who is it this time? The blonde from the seventh floor?” “No, Sarah.” “Sarah, who?” “The librarian.” “The librarian? You’ve got to be kidding. You won the bet fair and square. No need to take the stray home.” Bet? Stray? Those words and their implications echoed mercilessly in my head. I grabbed my clothes and ran into the bathroom as the first tears slipped from my eyes. Whoever coined the phrase, the truth hurts, couldn’t be any more right. My original gut instinct had been right. It had been all too good to be true. The only reason Adam asked me out in the first place was to win a lousy bet! Our entire relationship had been built on a lie. How could I believe anything Adam said now? “Sarah, are you all right?” I came out fully dressed. “Darling, what’s wrong?” “Tell me, Adam, how much was the wager?” “You heard what Bill said?” he asked trying to put his arms around me. “Let me go!” “No. I want you to stay.” “I have nothing to stay for.” “At least hear me out,” he implored following me from the room like a puppy at my heels.

“It’s true I asked you out to win a bet. I just never expected to fall in love with you.” “Too bad, it was all a joke,” I said and walked out of his apartment slamming the door behind me in finality. I cried all the way home. It was a wonder that I got home at all. I had no idea how I was going to get over Adam. I only knew that I had to if I was going to get on with my life. I decided to take a leave of absence from the library and try to get away for a while. Maybe I’d find another job some place else and start a new life with different scenery. The telephone began to ring. I knew it had to be Adam. I had no desire to talk to him feeling as hurt as I did. I took the phone off the hook. Then I realized that he’d probably come over. Frantically, I threw some things in a bag and hopped into the car. I didn’t want to be here when he came. I might be strong now, but would I be when he was outside my door? I drove away as a new crop of tears refilled my eyes. I cursed myself for believing that I could have a man like Adam. I’d forgotten who I was—a nobody with just-so looks. A handsome guy like Adam could have any woman. Why would he settle? My mother had always told me never to aspire to something I was not. When had I stopped listening to her advice? I headed on to the expressway. I tried to concentrate on my driving, but my mind kept wandering back to Adam. Add my constant tears to that and it’s no wonder I didn’t see the guy who cut me off until it was much too late. I swerved to avoid him and ended up going into a guardrail.
That’s all I
remembered as my entire world went black. *** When I finally opened my eyes again I found myself in a hospital. I tried to sit up, but couldn’t. Aside from the fact one of my arms was attached to an
HAVING HIS BABY by Candy Caine

intravenous drip and the other was in a cast, my head felt as if it were stuck in a vise. I wondered if I was really in Hell and not a hospital after all. As I lie there trying to focus my pained eyes on the ceiling, I wondered how long I’d been there. “So you’ve finally decided to rejoin us,” a voice said. I tried to locate the source. A nurse had walked into the room carrying fresh water. “Would you like a drink?” “Yes,” I tried to whisper, but I sounded more like a frog with a sore throat. She filled a paper cup and put a flexible straw into it so I could sip. Though the water felt good, I choked on it. It was hard to swallow. “Try again,” she said. “In case you’re wondering, you’re in Good Sam and it’s Tuesday morning. And you’re going to be all right. The best part is that the baby is okay.” “Baby?” What baby? “Fine. I told your guy that, too. Heck of a way for him to find out. He was so worried about you. I wish I had someone who loved me as much. You’re one lucky girl, that’s for sure.” I wanted to scream. Not only had my world had stopped spinning, it was now unraveling like a pull in a sweater. Pregnant. Just what I needed on top of everything else. I was afraid to think what else could go wrong. What in God’s name was I going to do? And if I heard the nurse correctly, not only did Adam know about the baby, but he was also at the hospital. So much for my great disappearing act and starting anew. If it weren’t so hysterically funny, I’d be drowning in my own tears. “If you need anything, call.”

What I need now is for you to make me disappear. My head throbbed and I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do now. And as if that weren’t enough, Adam came walking through the door.
He was definitely the last
person I desired to see at that moment. The tears began to flow. He reached over and wiped them for me. “Oh, baby, what did you do?” I tried to turn away from him. I didn’t want him to see me cry. “Go away,” I said. “I’m not going anywhere. You’re my captive audience, now. Why didn’t you tell me about the baby?” I tried to tell him that I didn’t know, but a wave of pain interrupted me. It seemed to alarm Adam. “Don’t move! Do you want me to get the nurse?” “No…I’m…o…kay,” I somehow managed to whisper. “Why did you run away?
I thought we had something wonderful
between us.” “It was all wrong.” “No, Sarah, it was beautiful. You let a stupid remark made by a shallow guy come between us.” “It was all based on a dare.” “Yes, but that quickly changed as soon as I got to know you. When you ran away, I was so worried. And now with the baby…” “I’ll be fine without you.” “No. I want to be with you—and the baby. I want us to be a family.” “I’ll deal with the baby. I don’t need your help.” “What do you mean by deal with the baby?” “I haven’t thought about all my options,” I told him.

That part was true. I had only found out about the baby moments before he came strolling into my room. I really hadn’t given any thought to what I would do. “I won’t allow you to sweep my child away like…some piece of garbage.” When I didn’t answer he added, “I mean it, Sarah. It’s a part of me as well. I want to exercise my rights as its father and be one.” I could tell just by looking at him that he meant every word. Then his face softened again and there was a great deal of emotion in his voice as he said, “Sarah, listen to me. It’s not charity I’m offering you. It’s my love. I want to share my life with you—and my child.” Tears began to cloud my eyes again. “Please, go away.” “There’s no way I’m going to let you or our baby out of my life. Marry me,” he pleaded. It would have been so easy to say yes. But I feared he might change his mind somewhere down the road. How long does one keep a stray around? Then I noticed the tears in his eyes. Unless the man was the world’s greatest actor, he really cared. What more could I ask of him? How could he prove his love if I denied him the chance? “May I have some water?” He held the glass for me as I sipped.
“All my life…I wanted to be
someone else. It really didn’t matter whom…I would look…into the mirror every morning…and say, you’re still here?
I guess…I never expected…” I
stopped to sip some more water. “That a handsome guy like you would want some nobody like me.”

“You couldn’t be any more wrong or blind. You’ve got a natural beauty that radiates from within. Madam Librarian, one only has to open the book to see it. I’m proud to be seen with you by my side.” I had no answer. I was still translating the meaning of what he had just said. It was music to my ears. “I’d love to believe you.” “Then why don’t you? Grant me the time to show you…say, fifty—no seventy years.” The silent tears began to slip from my eyes again and I turned away. Adam gently cupped my chin and turned my head. Then he softly dabbed away the wetness with a tissue. “Let me love you, Sarah. Give me the chance to show you how much I care. That’s all I ask.” In the end my heart won the battle. I loved Adam and I wanted to have his baby. I knew it would be as beautiful as he. And perhaps our child would inherit my love for books. THE END
