Author Note When I had decided to find a mate for Eggther, I thought it would be an easy task. After all, he is one of my favorite characters in my Santa’s Elves series and like I say many times in this story and previous ones, he deserves love like everyone else. Still, when it was time to sit down and write this story, I had a major problem. See, Eggther has been my comic relief for all the stories and suddenly, I thrust him center stage as a potential lover. The trouble was I didn’t see Eggther as a sexual being which made it very hard to write an erotic romance based upon his sexual exploits. After talking to many of my eXtasy friends, I finally came up with an approach that I could handle. While this story is about Eggther, it is told from the viewpoint of Angie, my heroine in The Thing About Elves, who has appointed herself Eggther’s protector for life because of their friendship. She feels that part of her duty is to make sure the little guy is happy. You will see the whole cast of characters from all the Santa’s Elves books come alive again in this comic short on how they want to find a mate for a dear friend. But things unfold in ways even they can’t imagine. I hope you enjoy this addition to the series! Lynn Crain

her chin in her hand, watched Eggther Angie, run back and forth making sure everyone had what he or she needed. There were many times that she watched the little guy, amazed at his abilities. He was one of the last little folk, or so she was told, and many times she could feel his loneliness. Ever since she tried to rescue him from the frozen lake, it felt as if they had some sort of connection. Taking another sip of her drink, she narrowed her eyes as her mind whirled a mile a minute thinking about what she needed to do, just how she could help him. “I know that look.” “I do, too, and I don’t know about you, but it’s bound to get us in trouble somehow.” “Ha, ha, funny you two.” Taking another sip of her drink, she turned her gaze to her husband and best friend, Tessa. “Have either of you ever really watched him?” Ardan looked around, obviously looking to see just who him might be. “Who are we talking about here? There are a lot of hims in the room today.” Tessa looked at her and stood next to her. “Not again. I heard this all last week and I’m not sure I can take another round today.”
Lynn Crain Angie sighed. “Eggther. Who else would I be talking about?” Ardan bent down and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead before sliding into the chair next to her. “What about him?” “He doesn’t have anyone to have sex with.” Ardan almost choked on the drink he was trying to swallow. “What?” he finally managed to get out. “Here we go again.” Tess let out a big sigh and flopped down in the empty chair. “Honey, you just can’t fix everything.” “You two are impossible. Of course I can’t fix everything. But just give me one good reason why I can’t do this for Eggther. Or at least try.” Ardan cleared his throat. “First of all, just how do you know he wants someone?” Frowning at her husband, Angie continued to watch the little guy. “He’s lonely, Ardan. He’s even said so to me many times. You all are just not listening to him. You take him for granted.” “When has he ever said anything or even made a complaint?” Tess questioned. “He told me again today after the wedding. And you know him, he’ll never complain about anything.” “Really?” Ardan questioned intently. “I’ve never heard him indicate anything one way or the other.” “Well, he does. He told me that he thought no 2
A Love For Eggther one would love him, no one would ever care for him like we all care for each other. He knows that we all have a special bond.” “He said that?” Angie turned to her friend. “Yeah, Tess, he said that.” “Well, we all love him. Surely he knows that…and I don’t try to take advantage of him.” Scowling at her friend, Angie shook her head. “It’s not the same and you know it.” “You may have a point, Ang, but just what do you propose to do?” Ardan gently rubbed her shoulder. She was so thankful that he just seemed to understand her completely, especially with the challenges they had in the beginning. He and Tessa were probably the only two people in the world who truly understood how she felt about Eggther and why. “I’m just not sure yet.” She made a pouty face toward her husband. “I’ll let you know when I do.” “Know about what?” Fearghus Brodie walked up to them, his voice the perfect Scottish lilt. Angie didn’t care what anyone else thought of him, but she liked him and as far as she was concerned, he was the perfect match for Aingeal who needed someone to reign her in. “I want to find someone for Eggther.” “Oh.” The man just stood there with a knowing look on his face. 3
Lynn Crain Angie frowned again. “What do you mean oh?” “Nothing…just that...Eggther is one of the ancient little folk, isn’t he?” “I believe you are correct. He’s been with Santa as long as I can remember. I think my father told me he was here when he was a child as well.” Fearghus nodded. “I thought as much.” Angie glanced from man to man. “Can someone clue me in since this is my project?” “How much do you know about elven history?” “Not as much as I should. Ardan’s told me some and I learned even more in the hall of the Elven Elders. But we’ve never really discussed the ones you all are calling the ancient ones.” “That’s right. I remember Aingeal telling me about your experience. It’s a special honor for a human to be allowed there. I only know of a few.” He smiled at her. “Anyway, the ancient small folk were the helpers to the elder elves and people like Santa.” “So, just what are you trying to tell me? That there aren’t a lot of them left?” Fearghus leveled his gaze at her. “There aren’t very many of us left let alone the ancient ones. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to find him a mate at all. At least not amongst the ancient ones. Most of them were paired up ages ago and, like most elves, they mate for life.” “That’s just not fair.” Angie didn’t know 4
A Love For Eggther whether she should scream or cry. “Does it have to be another elf?” “I don’t suppose it does, but the ancient ones are a finicky lot. You’ll more than likely have to really screen whoever you find.” “More finicky than you?” Aingeal’s teasing voice joined the conversation. Fearghus put his arm around his new wife. “I hear they can be.” “Why are you all here? Why are you all standing around? Has Eggther done something wrong and now you’re not enjoying yourselves?” Angie jumped up and rushed to him, placing her hand on his small shoulder. “Oh, no, Eggther, you’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, we were all discussing something we hope will bring more joy to your life.” Eggther looked up at her. “And what might that be, Angie Hudson Locklin?” Angie glanced around at every one. “Well…we were discussing the possibility of finding you a mate…would you like that?” The little elf let out a bloodcurdling scream and all talk in the room immediately stopped. “Oh my goodness, Angie Hudson Locklin,” he yelled and grabbed her in a fierce hug. “Are you serious? Are you really going to find Eggther a mate? Someone to love?” he questioned brightly. Angie smiled down at him after she got over the shock of his scream and the fact everyone was 5
Lynn Crain looking at her. “That’s the plan.” “Oh…oh…Eggther has so many things to do…so many, many things…” The little elf ran out of the reception hall, waving his arms to and fro. All eyes turned to Angie. She stared back at them and frowned. “What?” “That’s what I’d like to know.” Angie swallowed hard. If she had learned nothing else during her time in the North Pole it was this— Santa ruled the roost. “It’s nothing really, sir.” “I’d hardly call it nothing when my right hand elf starts running around like a chicken with his head cut off. You had to say something to him.” “Eggther does that all the time, sir. The chicken thing, you know.” Santa frowned at her and she let out a big sigh. “Oh, all right…I told him I wanted to find him a mate.” “You what?” The man practically barked out the question. “A mate…you know…like you and Mrs. Claus, me and Ardan, Jedrick and Tessa, Bevan and Janice.” She looked around at everyone who now stared at her. “There’s nothing wrong with it. Everyone deserves a mate. Even Eggther.” **** Angie frowned at herself in the mirror as she brushed her long black hair. Sighing, she sat down 6
A Love For Eggther the brush and wondered if she had really done the right thing. She didn’t know where she should look first or how she would exactly fulfill her promise. This time she may have put her foot really into it. Santa had really let her know his displeasure at her announcement that she was going to find someone for Eggther. First thing tomorrow morning, she would have to talk to Eggther to see what he wanted in a mate. Her attention was immediately taken away by the tender touch of her husband’s hand on her shoulder. Leaning into his arm, she smiled up at him. “Mmm…that feels good.” Rubbing her cheek against him, she felt thankful she found Ardan and his love. “Do you think I’ve promised the impossible?” He sat on the bench next to her. “Angie, I think that you can do whatever you put your mind to do.” “Thank you, but I’m afraid this time, I don’t really know where to start.” Sighing heavily, she gently rubbed her forehead and leaned into her husband. He was her rock, the very reason for living and she knew that her world would crumble without him. “Don’t you think Eggther deserves someone to love? Am I really so far off the mark here?” “No, you aren’t. I’ve learned since I met you everyone deserves love. And right now I need to feel your body under mine.” 7
Lynn Crain Ardan caressed her inner arm, making her shiver in anticipation. She loved this man with all her heart and yearned for his touch. Cupping her head, he pulled her slowly toward him. “I love you,” he whispered, swooping down and claiming her mouth as his own. Moaning in delight, she put her arms around him. “Mr. Locklin, I do believe you need to take your trembling wife to bed.” “I fully intend to do just that.” Standing, he swung her up in his arms and walked to the bed. He gently placed her on the soft mattress, quickly following her down. With a flick of his finger, he separated the front clasp of her bra and pushed it away. Caressing first one, then her other breast, he pulled on her nipples before leaning in to nip at her pliant flesh. Arching to meet his mouth, Angie could feel the desire pulse through her body. It amazed her that each time they made love, it was like the first time, getting better with each stroke and kiss, each nip and tug. She would never have enough of this man as his hand slipped lower into her underwear to find her tender folds, rubbing seductively the jewel hidden within. Swirling around the hard nib, he pulled back. “Undress me first.” “All right.” Her voice was husky with desire. Two could play this game. Pushing him up, she smiled at him. “Why don’t you stand next to the 8
A Love For Eggther bed? Let’s see if I can conjure a little magic of my own,” she murmured. Levering himself from the bed, Ardan stood next to it, his eyes smoldering with fiery passion. “No one ever said you didn’t have magic.” Laughter low and husky filled the room. “You do know how to flatter a girl.” Sitting up, Angie ran her fingers up his pant clad legs. “Do you want this fast or slow?” He gritted his teeth, “What do you think?” “I think the point is not to think. I think the point is to just feel.” Slowly moving up his legs, she stopped at their juncture, paying special attention to the now growing mound hidden from her view. But not for long if she had her way. Reaching around his taunt body, she caressed his ass with her hands and rubbed her face against his front. She was only satisfied when she heard a long, low moan from him. “Hurry up, will you already?” His voice betrayed the need that his body must be feeling at that moment. “Good things come to those who wait,” she quipped and returned her hands to the front to unclasp his jeans. She so liked him in jeans, each button a slow torture to what would be a very satisfying encounter. His heady aroma filled her nose as she pushed his clothes out of the way, her mouth moving along his smooth flesh. Before he could react, her mouth found him and she 9
Lynn Crain leisurely caressed the purple-colored, mushroom head of his cock, savoring each lick and taste. She had always loved his manly, salty flavor. Catching the tip between her lips and teeth, she smiled to herself at his tremble. With every lick, nip or kiss, she further branded him as her own. “Be careful, woman. I want to come in you, not all over you,” he whispered and pushed himself even deeper inside her willing throat. Chuckling, she continued to caress him with her mouth for a few more minutes before she withdrew, replacing her lips with her hands, rubbing up and down on his large penis. It amazed her that he always fit perfectly with her body. Still, she wanted to give him as much pleasure as possible before receiving hers. Cupping his balls in her hands, she gently massaged them and was pleased with Ardan’s moan of pleasure. Without warning, he pushed her down on the bed and began to caress her all over, stopping at one breast, then the other before going lower. Angie closed her eyes and enjoyed the feeling as he stopped at her sensitive flat stomach. With every touch, her body grew hotter and more ready for his entry as he went even lower with his hot mouth. Reaching up, he pulled each nipple until it was a hard bud. Her breath caught in her throat as her body instinctively reacted to his touch. It was 10
A Love For Eggther shamefully wicked and she didn’t care. She only hoped that all married couples were as lucky as they. Inching down even further, he continued to rub and touch her legs, gently parting them to allow his mouth entrance. Caressing her inner thighs, he parted them gently. Her body shook as his fingers drew closer to her hot mound, his touch burning his imprint on her very being. She moaned loudly as he came ever closer. Soon his fingers parted her slick folds and she held her breath as he circled her hard nub with his thumb. Almost immediately, she began to tremble and squirm as he expertly toyed with her body. Before long, his tongue flicked out to graze her hard body, causing a jolt of electricity to pass through her. He tortured her body so well and she didn’t want it to end. His tongue swirled around her hard nub, over and over again, darting in and out of her dripping folds. Soon his fingers joined his mouth, pressing into her to reach deep inside to her magic place. Soon she was a quivering mass of flesh about to explode. Still, he pushed her for more as his fingers matched the rhythm of his hot tongue, moving in and out of her body. “Please, Ardan, I need to feel you inside of me. Now,” she whispered huskily and pulled on his hair. Grinning up at her, he stood quickly. “Whatever my lady commands.” He impaled 11
Lynn Crain himself to the hilt into her as she raised her hips to accommodate him. His hands caressed her face and he leaned down to kiss her gently. “I love you with all my heart, Angie.” She smiled slyly at him. “I know,” she answered and matched his rhythm. He had filled her every desire, her every hope and need, bringing her body more feelings than she ever thought possible. Her hands caressed his back and butt, pulling him even deeper into her. He was like steel within her soft folds with the tingles spreading through her like wildfire. She wanted this feeling to go on and on, but her body began to tighten around him as he pushed harder to bury himself even deeper within her. He filled her and stretched her as the colors began to fill their room— rich blues and violets in a kaleidoscope of colors. Slowly, he pumped into her as the magic swirled around them, taking each sensation to greater heights. Each thrust pushed Angie closer to fulfillment as the colors began to coalesce into a pleasure filled envelope of erotic sensation. Arching into him, she felt his cock deep within her, reaching and searching for something she knew would bring her instant pleasure. Ardan clasp her even harder to him and put his forehead on hers. Suddenly all the colors merged and the pleasure in her cunt became almost unbearable. Another deep thrust brought contact with her deep pleasure well as the sensations 12
A Love For Eggther came at her in a rush, his cock growing even larger as it brought her closer to total satisfaction. All too soon, the ferocity of her orgasm rushed her and pushed her over the edge as her world shattered into a thousand fragments of hot, wicked, feelings where only her husband and their love remained. **** Eggther sighed deeply and looked toward the family compound from his perch in Santa’s office. He could feel the sexual energy building and being relieved. He could always feel it and it had brought him more than a sense of loss over the years. It was probably one of the reasons he had reacted so excitedly when Angie Hudson Locklin told him of her intentions to find him a mate. He was so ready to have someone else in his life instead of everyone else’s someone. He remembered what it was like to be young and in love, to be wanted because someone cared deeply for you. And if Angie Hudson Locklin hadn’t come along he would have forgotten that feeling altogether. Eggther watched the northern lights dance around the sky, hoping everything turned out as wonderful as it could this time. **** 13
Lynn Crain “What’s the matter, Eggther?” He jumped, not realizing Santa had entered the room. “What do you mean, sir?” Santa gazed at the small elf. He had never seen the little guy so…so…sad. Maybe there was something to what Angie had discussed earlier with him. He didn’t want to admit it, but since that young lady had arrived on the scene, she and Eggther developed a bond that he didn’t quite understand. “You were quite excited when Angie said she was going to try and find you a mate.” He beamed. “It made be quite happy, sir! Can you imagine that? Angie Hudson Locklin cares for me so much that she doesn’t like to see Eggther alone.” Santa frowned. “You’re lonely?” “Eggther is very lonely, sir. All the Locklin kids won’t need me much longer. Eggther is also getting older. Maybe it is time for me to have someone for myself.” The normally red-suited man could really kick himself that he had not noticed his right-hand elf’s loneliness. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know that you were having problems.” “Eggther isn’t having problems. Eggther likes his job. It’s just that…” he hesitated for a moment, “It’s just that my home is empty and cold. Yet when I go to any of the Locklin homes or even yours, sir, it’s warm and inviting. Just what Eggther imagined a real home should be.” 14
A Love For Eggther Santa sighed then, realizing he was obviously losing touch with his people. Here the Locklin kids had all began to get married. Thank god, there were only three of them left to go. Then of course, there were the grandchildren. He had thought Eggther didn’t need that for himself, that he was content to watch from the fringes, called to help when he was needed. Obviously, he was wrong. Clearing his throat, he knew there were some things he had to have answered. “So…this plan that Angie has…you agree with it?” Eggther frowned slightly. “I’m not sure what Angie Hudson Locklin is planning. She told me to be at the clinic first thing in the morning and we’d discuss my requirements.” “Have you ever really thought about what you want in another mate?” **** Blocking his thoughts from even going on the path Santa had just mentioned, Eggther realized he hadn’t thought about it one way or another for years. He just knew he was lonely and had always assumed he would never find a mate who was meant to stay with him forever and managed to push the very possibility from him mind. “It has been years since I’d even thought of the possibility, sir.” “Seems like you’re thinking about it now.” 15
Lynn Crain “Yes, sir, Eggther is. And Eggther can’t wait to see what Angie Hudson Locklin has planned.” **** Santa looked out the window and sighed. The northern lights were making their nightly journey and it made him think of the legend of the two lost lovers. Lovers who found their way back to each other. Maybe there was something he could help with, just maybe this harebrained idea of Angie’s wasn’t so bad. “I guess that you’ll need to decide just what you want. You have all night to think about it. Right?” “Does this mean you approve, Santa?” the little guy said anxiously. “Eggther, I’ve never wanted you unhappy. I was just a little surprised that you didn’t come to me.” Hanging his head in shame, he answered. “I didn’t want to disappoint you, sir.” “Eggther, you being happy wouldn’t disappointment me at all. I want you to be happy. You do understand that, don’t you?” The small elf eyed his boss. “I suppose I do. After all, you found Janice for Bevan and you brought home Tessa for Jedrick.” “And Tess brought Angie.” Santa reached down and patted his shoulder. “We have a very special bond, you know.” 16
A Love For Eggther “I’m just beginning to realize that.” “It’s not every day that a human puts their life on the line for an elf.” “That’s so very true. “ He turned to go then turned back to Eggther. “Don’t forget to think about what she might ask you tomorrow. It never hurts to be prepared.” **** Angie sighed as she put her things into her locker. Ardan had a few visits to make at the engineering office before he could come to the clinic. She frowned at herself, realizing she wasn’t any closer to deciding just how to approach this problem she created for herself. Damn, she thought, it was just so unfair. If it were anyone else in the world, she would have had them matched up almost right away. But this was her very special friend, Eggther, and she realized she didn’t have a clue as to where to start. The whole thing weighed heavily on her mind and she found herself searching for something in her sleep that she couldn’t quite find. She would definitely need help from others to complete this task she had given herself. And one of those people would have to be Santa. After all, he knew more about everyone who lived at the North Pole than anyone else. Even those who were family. Coming out of the locker room, she was startled 17
Lynn Crain to see the very man himself sitting in a chair quietly waiting. Swallowing hard, all she could hope is that she wasn’t in more trouble. This clinic was her and Ardan’s life, nothing could jeopardize them taking care of the elves of the North Pole. Not even Eggther. “Uh…sorry…I didn’t hear you come in. Is something wrong, sir?” Smiling, he slowly twirled his hat in his hand. “I feel I owe you an apology, Angie.” “Me?” She didn’t know what happened between yesterday afternoon and now, but it was something major. “Yes, you.” “May I ask why?” “Eggther and I talked last night. You’re right, he’s a lonely little guy. So, I’m here to apologize and to give you a little more insight into the little guy.” Angie sat down next to Santa. While she was happy she had been vindicated, she knew there was more to the story. “Thank you. Is there anything you might want to add? I get the feeling there’s something more.” Sighing, Santa nodded. “You’re right. There is. What I tell you needs to stay with you and not be talked about at all. Only a few of us remember this.” She swallowed hard. “All right. I understand and you should know by now that I am very good with secrets. Especially ones concerning this 18
A Love For Eggther place.” “I know. But these are things that haven’t been talked about in years. At least by no one here. I’m sure that Fearghus has heard this story and might even tell you what he knows at a later date.” She nodded. “He was one of the people on my list to talk to since I really don’t know what I’m doing here.” He patted her hand. “You don’t know the half of it, young lady.” She smiled at him. “Why don’t you tell me?” Santa let out a long sigh then. “I know you don’t know this, but Eggther at one time was handfasted to a wonderful woman. They were about to make it permanent when she unexpectedly disappeared.” “What?” Angie couldn’t believe what she heard. “Did no one look for her?” “I don’t think it was a matter of looking. The council told Eggther that he must let her go and that was the end of it.” “Well…did she die? I mean…what happened to her? What was her name?” “Her name was Edana Gairden and I’m not really sure what happened to her. All I know is that Eggther deeply cared for her and, within a year of her disappearance, he came to work for me.” “Has anyone ever tried to find her? I mean…maybe that’s where I should start…what 19
Lynn Crain do you think?” “I just don’t know, Angie, I just don’t know.” He looked at his hands for a moment before returning his gaze. “I just know that he was very, very excited that you were going to try and find him someone. I just never knew.” “Well…is there someone I can ask?” “Talk to Fearghus. He knows how to talk to the council and might be able to get some answers for you.” She nodded and tried to take everything in that he had just told her. “That sounds like the right thing to do. But what do I say to Eggther?” “It’s probably best that you appear to be getting a whole new mate for him, not looking for his first love.” “That actually makes sense. I don’t want him disappointed if we can’t find her.” “Right. Well, I better be getting to my office. Toys still need to be made because Christmas will be here before we know it.” He got up and slowly went to the door of the clinic. Turning, he smiled at her. “Let’s just keep this little talk between us. Okay?” “I’ll try. I think I’ll end up telling Fearghus because he’ll want to know where I got my information.” “I understand, but no one else. Not even Ardan.” She shook her head. “You can’t ask that of me 20
A Love For Eggther and you know it.” He smiled. “Almost got you there.” “Unfair.” She could hear his laugh all the way to his sleigh. **** “Eggie…just what is it you want in a mate? I mean, I’ve never really asked you and, since I’ll be the one helping you find someone, I definitely should know.” Using her pet name for him, Angie searched his face, still hoping for some sign that she was absolutely doing the right thing. If she ever hurt the little guy, she would never forgive herself. And with the new information that Santa had given her that morning, it made the task that much more difficult. The little elf got a mischievous look on his face. “Well…first of all, she needs to have…” At this point, he moved his hands in front of his chest and began to expand out a distance. “And then she needs not to have too much of …” Again, using his hands, he indicated what could only be interpreted as an overabundance of belly and butt. Angie just stared. She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She tried to best to keep any emotion off her face. This was some new area for her. Sure, she had talked about certain things with Ardan within the context of generalities. She had never discussed specifics of a woman with any 21
Lynn Crain male…especially not a little three foot four elf…who obviously needed to get laid. “And she needs to have a pretty face and the sweetest nectar needs to fall from her netherregions.” At this point, Angie’s eyes widened. This was way too much, even for one in the medical profession. Sure, she helped deliver babies and was very passionate in her relationship with her husband. But never in all her life had she ever really discussed these things with another male. And no matter just how much she wanted to deny it, her little elf friend was definitely male. Her hands came up in a defensive pose. “Whoa…wait…way too much information!” Eggther made a sad face. “I thought Angie Hudson Locklin wanted to know what Eggther requires in a mate.” She frowned. This was not going at all like she thought it would. She just wished she could straight out ask him about his first love. Pensively, she patted the little guy’s shoulder. “I do, Eggie, but sometimes you give people too much information.” Eggther looked like he was ready to burst into tears and run away. Suddenly, she felt very bad about what she had said. “Eggther, there’s nothing wrong with what you said. It’s just that people don’t normally give that many details. And when they do, it’s almost always to members of the 22
A Love For Eggther same sex. While we’re very great friends, there are still things that aren’t meant to be shared between members of the opposite sex.” He looked up at her with wide eyes. “But elves are very sexual beings. Do you think I should be discussing this with Ardan or another elf? One of the male persuasion.” Sighing heavily, this whole conversation brought back the fact just how hard this search was going to be. “I don’t know. Maybe you should discuss this with a male elf. And while I think it’s very true that elves are sexual beings, some things are meant to be private and not on public display. Men and women don’t really talk about these things to each other unless they are mated and sometimes then, it’s difficult.” She watched him think for a minute. “Maybe that is why Eggther has never found a mate. Maybe I’m just too odd.” Sighing, he turned and walked away, shoulders drooping. Once he reached the clinic door, he turned back to her, a very sad look on his face. “Eggther doesn’t feel like answering any more questions today, Angie Hudson Locklin. Hopefully, you have enough information to start the search for Eggther’s mate.” Once he was through the door, she put her head in her hands. This would be one of the hardest tasks she had ever done. And it would just be because her little friend was odd as he stated. Inhaling deeply, she looked down at her 23
Lynn Crain paperwork and tried to concentrate. Their only appointment was with Aingeal and Fearghus. Since he was from the oldest loinnirs and knew the council, maybe he could help her on her quest to find Eggther’s first love. It wasn’t long before Fearghus, Aingeal and Ardan came through the clinic door and her encounter with Eggther was pushed to the back of her mind. Angie went through the motions of being the good nurse and sister-in-law, thinking it was so unfair that everyone seemed to be having babies. But when she put it in perspective, she knew that they hadn’t even tried for kids yet. Heck, they hadn’t even discussed it. “So…when are you going to try for a few of your own?” The brogue washed over her like a new day. “That obvious, huh?” Fearghus smiled and shook his head. “Only to someone who is looking for the signs.” “Tell me that you can’t read everyone that way.” “It seems to run in the Locklin family only.” She genuinely laughed then. “I think I can understand that one.” “Good. Now you want to tell me what is really on your mind? Or am I going to have to figure it out on my own?” Angie looked to where Ardan and Aingeal were talking quietly. “What about them?” 24
A Love For Eggther Fearghus looked to where she indicated. “I got the feeling from them that they wanted some brother-sister time, if you get my meaning.” “Aye…I do,” she tried on a touch of the brogue herself, making him laugh in the process. “Well…it seems as if I have a bit of a problem concerning my search for a mate for Eggther.” “I can tell that this is going to take some time. Why don’t we sit down and you can tell me.” Sitting down in the waiting room chairs, she had to think about just how she wanted to discuss the problem with him. “Well…first of all…I need to ask that you keep this to yourself for right now.” “Why all the secrecy?” “Santa.” She smiled his unanswered question. “Yeah, he asked me to be discrete, very discrete.” “All right, but if Aingeal asks, I’m not going to lie to her.” “Understood.” She caught herself twirling her hair, something she hadn’t done since Tessa and she lived alone. “What?” she questioned and realized that she couldn’t put it off any more. “Fine. Apparently, Eggther was handfasted to a woman named Edana Gairden. I’d like to try and find her before going out and finding him someone new.” His green eyes suddenly seemed to glow brighter. “Are you sure her name was Edana Gairden?” He let out a low whistle. “Wow.” 25
Lynn Crain “Is that all you can say? Wow?” “Yeah…that’s all I can say…at least for now.” “I take it that she was an important person or something.” Angie tried to figure out what he knew and wasn’t telling her. “Let me make a few phone calls and get back to you.” “Good. Make it quick because if we can’t find her, we need to find Eggther someone else.” She got up and walked away from the waiting area, wondering just the man knew and couldn’t tell. **** “God…I’ll never get enough of you…” Ardan pulled her into his arms and gently stroked her body. Angie smiled and had to agree. This man was her life, but she wondered if they would ever try to increase their numbers. “That’s wonderful and all, but are we ever going to talk about children?” He looked at her and his eyes narrowed. “I want kids…don’t you?” She breathed an inward sigh of relief. “Of course, I do but we just never…you know…really talked about it.” Tenderly rubbing her body, she could feel him nod. “We can talk about it now. Frankly, I’m amazed that you haven’t said something before since everyone seems to be having babies right now. 26
A Love For Eggther Especially since Tessa and Jedrick will be adding to their brood soon.” She pulled back and looked at him. “What?” “Oops…sorry…I wasn’t supposed to say anything. She wanted to tell you. I think it kinda surprised even them. But the twins are almost two now and they just can’t seem to keep their hands off each other. I just can’t understand it.” “Really? You can’t understand it?” She began to tickle him a little bit. “I’ll give you a little bit of understanding.” Playfully wrestling with him, it wasn’t long before she was under his long, lean body. Smiling into her husband’s handsome face, she kissed him. “I’m ready for some food. How about you?” “I’m thinking I’d like to eat you instead.” She punched him playfully. “Been there, done that at least once today. We have a few other things we need to talk about.” “I hope it’s not something serious.” Sighing, she just couldn’t keep in everything she had learned today. These were things she needed to share with her husband. “It shouldn’t be, but I can guarantee you it’s enlightening. But then again, if this doesn’t turn out like I want it to, I’m not sure what’s going to happen.” She got up and put on a robe. “This has to do with Eggther, doesn’t it?” She nodded, not sure she could actually trust her voice. She’d had just found out that they both 27
Lynn Crain wanted children and her very best friend in the world was expecting again. Now she only hoped that she could share some of that happiness with another great friend. Angie leaned into her husband when he came up behind her. “Let’s go make some dinner.” Walking into their kitchen, she felt happy here as she loved to cook. It would relax her by cooking when she’d have a bad day at the hospital. They decided on a simple dinner of soup and a massive salad. Once they were seated, Angie decided it was time to discuss what Santa had told her. “Did you know that Eggther was actually handfasted to someone he loved deeply?” Ardan took another bite of his soup. “Really? What happened?” She took a bite of salad. “Don’t know. All Santa said was that they were preparing to make it permanent when she disappeared.” “Didn’t anyone try to find her?” “Don’t know that either. Santa said it was shortly after her disappearance that Eggther came here.” “What was her name?” “Edana Gairden.” Ardan stared at her, then shrugged. “Never heard of her.” “Well, Fearghus had and told me he’d have to get back to me.” “Hmm…I wonder how Fearghus knows her.” 28
A Love For Eggther “That makes two of us.” They were surprised by a knock on their door. No one had visitors in the North Pole unless they were expected. Ardan went, opened the door and saw Fearghus standing there. “May I come in?” He opened the door completely. “Please. Angie and I’ve been talking about what Santa told her today. Your name came up more than once.” “Thank you.” Fearghus walked in and smiled. “Hope it was nothing bad.” She smiled wryly at him. “That remains to be seen.” She watched him for a moment more. “Please sit down. Did you find anything out?” Going to the couch, he sat down and got comfortable. Angie walked to the big comfy chair across from him and sat down. She smiled when the fire started without warning. “I’ve talked to members of the council and heard what they had to say. They also instructed me to talk to my wife as this is more her area of expertise.” “Aingeal…what does my sister have to do with this?” Ardan asked and came to sit on the arm of the chair next to his wife. “Aingeal is one of the strongest earth-intuitives the elven community has ever seen. Elana Gairden is the strongest in the world. Many, many years ago, when she was a young woman, she was 29
Lynn Crain handfasted to another ancient elf like herself. The day that their permanent service was to take place the loinnir on the Chinese continent called to her and she hasn’t been seen in Scotland since that day.” “So that’s it? We need to move on.” Holding up his hand, Fearghus stopped her questions. “I didn’t say that. You need to let me finish.” Sighing, she tried to still her beating heart. She knew what it was like to be without the one person you loved most in the world. She wanted to be able to wipe that hurt from Eggther’s life. “Sorry, I tend to get impatient.” “No problem. Like I said, no one had seen her in Scotland since that day years ago. That is until today.” Angie sat up. “What do you mean?” “Apparently, Edana showed up at the council hall today and told them it was time for her to give up her position. Time that she had her own life and someone to love.” “Huh? Am I missing something?” She looked at him, knowing her confusion was plain on her face. “Aingeal is apparently the next in line to take on the care of the world’s loinnirs. Or at least part of the time. The rest will be devoted to her family. To us.” “You mean, you have to choose between duty and family?” 30
A Love For Eggther “Isn’t it the same every where? Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.” Angie rubbed her face. “I totally understand that. I was given a similar choice in the Hall of Elders. It can be a very intimidating decision.” “Unfortunately, Edana wasn’t given that decision. The council in power at the time basically kidnapped her and forced her to do their bidding.” “How could they do that?” “Fearghus, I would have to agree with my wife. What type of people are the elven people being ruled by?” He nodded. “I can understand your concern. There was a time when elves only cared for the wellbeing of other elves. Or at least those in power did. My wife showed me the error of my ways. She’s the one who showed me that it didn’t matter if one was a pure bred elf or not. It matters more that you care in the principles of what we represent.” “So, where does that leave us?” “That leaves us with receiving a guest.” “When? And just how are we going to tell Eggther?” “We’re not, she is.” Angie and Ardan looked up in surprise, not realizing someone else had entered the room. She was amazed to find a very beautiful, small elven woman with bright blue eyes and light blonde 31
Lynn Crain hair of medium length standing in the middle of her living room. Looking from man to man, she slowly stood. This woman was just perfect for Eggther, she could just feel it. “Can I offer you something, ma’am?” Like any woman, she reached up and smoothed her hair. “A cup of tea would be nice.” Her voice had a Scottish lilt, not unlike Fearghus’s, but much more refined. Angie quickly went into the kitchen and fixed a cup of tea. Placing all the items on a serving tray, she hurriedly returned to the living room, noting that not much had changed since she left. Except Edana was now sitting next to Fearghus on the couch. She was so small and he was so large, it was hard to believe that they were both elves. She smiled to herself as she sat down the tray. “I see you are smiling, young lady.” Startled, she looked up. “Should I be frowning?” Edana arched an eyebrow and chuckled under her breath. “No…smiling is good…I understand you are a good friend to Eggther. How did you two met?” Handing her a cup of tea, she retreated to the chair where Ardan still sat on the arm. “Well…he was actually here when I came for Tessa’s wedding…gradually, we got to know one another.” “I’ve heard that you’ve been to the Hall of the 32
A Love For Eggther Elders.” She nodded. “I have.” “Can you tell me the circumstance of your visit there? It’s rare that a human is allowed in their presence.” She swallowed hard. It was as if this were some kind of test. “I died.” Edana’s eyes narrowed. “You tried to save elves.” “I did. But the ice broke and I was trapped. Eggther tried to save me, but it was he who had taken me there. I think it was really hard on him, not to mention Ardan.” Angie reached for her husband’s hand and smiled up at him, glad he supported her. A wistful look crossed her face. “I remember what it was like being young and in love.” She sighed deeply then. “I wonder if he’ll even remember me.” Angie smiled brightly. “I know he does. He’s so lonely and really doesn’t talk at all about his life before here. I was lucky enough that Santa knew a little bit. I was going to start searching for you tomorrow with Fearghus’s help.” “So it was you who called to me.” She took another sip of tea. “I didn’t get a bit of sleep last night.” “She what?” Fearghus was on the edge of his seat. “How could she do that? She has no elven blood within her.” 33
Lynn Crain Edana turned blue eyes to him. “I do believe that the Elven Elders bestowed that honor upon her. At the same time, they gave her and Eggther a special bond.” She looked at Ardan sitting behind her. “Then there’s the bond that they gave them. Never to be apart again. They will be very, very happy for a long, long time.” Angie shook my head. “How do you know this?” “You’d be surprised what I know. But I will not tell you all what I know as everyone’s life here has to unfold as it will. It is not mine to give.” Angie could understand the wisdom of this. “I understand. But what of you and Eggther?” “Only tomorrow will tell. **** The day dawned bright and clear, quite a beautiful late summer’s day for the North Pole. Once they had said good bye to Fearghus and put Edana in their guest room, they discussed strategy of how to get the two long, lost lovers together. It warmed her heart that somehow, some way, she had been able to reach out for someone who meant so much to her. It was decided Ardan would go find Santa the moment he woke up and give him the developments of the previous night and Angie would bring Edana to the clinic with her once he 34
A Love For Eggther had sent the sleigh back for her and their guest. All she had to do was get through breakfast and shower. She swallowed hard because, while she and Eggther were close, Edana seemed almost standoffish. Standing in the kitchen, she was not quite sure what to do, when someone, obviously Edana, cleared her throat behind her. “Hi…sorry…I didn’t realize you were there. What would you like for breakfast?” “I’ve usually made it a habit to have cereal and some sort of fruit. I like to make it light.” “A woman after my own heart.” Angie busied herself with putting together their breakfast. “Fearghus tells me you’re a nurse.” “That’s right. I came here when Tessa was pregnant with her twins.” “Are you happy here?” There was something in her voice that made her turn to look at the woman. Placing cereal and a bowl of fruit in front of Edana, Angie sat across from her, sipping on her cup of coffee. “Why do you ask?” “It’s so…so white here. And cold.” Smiling, she watched the older lady carefully. “It is…but there’s beauty as well…I know you saw the northern lights when you came in.” “The green lights in the sky? Yes and they were quite beautiful.” “Then there’s all the indoor space that Santa has created for all the elves living here. I’m told that it 35
Lynn Crain is very similar to some of the European loinnirs except much smaller.” “He does all that for his elves?” “Santa would do anything to make us happy here. We can even go on vacations if we need to. All the Locklin children have gone to universities in the United States. I think that the younger two are actually talking about studying in Europe. I know that Cuinn is in Boston. Jedrick studied in Alaska and Ardan did college and medical school in two different places.” She could see that the woman was visibly moved. “He does all that for you?” “And more…like I said…he wants us to be happy.” “And Eggther? Is he happy?” How could Angie answer this? Sure the little elf was happy because he loved everyone within this special loinnir. But personal happiness was…well…personal, and when one was as lonely as Eggther seemed to her, happiness had to be fleeting. “I’m not sure he’s happy. I think he is content with the life he has built here.” “Sometimes contentment is all one has.” She took one more drink of tea before decisively putting her cup down. “I think it’s time to go see what’s going to happen now.” Nodding, Angie agreed. “The sleigh will be here soon, I’m sure.” “It should be here right now. I called it some 36
A Love For Eggther time ago.” “Can I ask you one question before we go? You two seem so different.” “Looks can be deceiving. We really weren’t all that different at the start. Both of us were being trained as earth-intuitives. We even had the same teachers. One day, a hellfire spell got away from one of the other students and Eggther took the brunt of it to save me. I really didn’t think much about it until Eggther didn’t join me at the Chinese loinnir. But by then I really couldn’t do anything about it and my parents had made it so he never knew where I was.” Angie was appalled. “How horrible? You mean you two might have never seen each other again?” Edana shook her head. “If it hadn’t been for you, Angie Hudson Locklin, I would have never found the love of my life again. Thank you for my second chance at happiness.” Angie’s eyes welled up and she let the tears make slow tracks down her face. “Just promise me one thing.” The older woman patted her hand. “What is it, my dear?” “Promise me you’ll make him very happy…please? I don’t know what I’d do if you broke his heart.” “I think that’s a promise I can keep.” **** 37

The ceremony had been really low key. After all, the couple was nearing their two-hundredth birthdays. Edana had worn an elegant dress of iridescent lilac and the light shimmered around her in a wonderful way. Eggther surprised them all by wearing a tux with full tails and, while it looked wonderful on him, it was certainly unexpected. The two weeks between the time Edana had arrived and the actual wedding was a whirlwind of activity, each day filled with planning something perfect for them. Santa had to make sure he wasn’t going to lose his right hand elf before he gave his permission. Still, it didn’t take much to convince him that this was the right thing to do. After all, who could stand up to that many Locklins? Angie smiled and clutched her husband’s arm tightly to her. Eggther had begged her to be his best man…or rather woman…and it had taken some sweet talking on the part of Ardan to persuade her that it was what she really wanted. And now that they were about to send the happy couple off for their honeymoon, she was glad her husband knew her so well. “So do you know where you’re going for your honeymoon, Eggther?” Santa asked, his hand on the sleigh. The small guy looked into the beautiful face of 38
A Love For Eggther his new bride, then back to his boss. “We’ve decided to go to Tahiti! You know I’ve never been to a tropical isle before. Edana says that there’s a small loinnir there and it’s really private. Everyone needs a private place for their honeymoon. Just like all of you.” The small elf beamed at all of them. “Eggther needs to get going. I’m not sure just how long I’ll hold out.” A mischievous look crossed his face as his bride’s cheeks turned pink. The sleigh took off amid the well wishes from everyone in attendance. Angie finally breathed a sigh of relief before turning to everyone. She didn’t know that the sleigh had turned back and was heading back to them. Before they could even open the doors to the reception hall, the reindeers’ hooves were touching down. “Angie…Angie Hudson Locklin…I forgot one thing.” Angie turned around. “There’s nothing you’ve forgotten, Eggther. All is well.” “Not really, Angie Hudson Locklin, this is something I have to show you.” He hopped out of the sleigh and ran to her, hugging her fiercely. “Eggther loves you with all his heart. We will always be special friends.” Angie, who had been holding her emotions in, allowed the tears to flow. “I know, Eggther, you’re special to me, too.” Eggther reached up and pulled her down to 39
Lynn Crain him, whispering in her ear. “Edana wanted me to tell you something.” She looked at his face intently and whispered back. “And just what is that?” “Does the word triplets mean anything to you?” Angie stood straight up, stunned. “What?” “You heard me right. But she also said, it’s a secret. You’re not supposed to know yet.” Turning to her husband, she looked at him stunned. “I know that look.” “I do, too.” Tessa shifted baby Catherine from one hip to another. “I don’t suppose you’re going to tell us what he said…are you?” She chuckled. “You don’t know this look…and no…I think I’ll wait to see how this one plays out.” Waving frantically, she watched the sleigh until she couldn’t see it any more. And all was right with the world. Just like Edana said it would be.
