Introduction The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is pleased to present the Tenth issue of the Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the ESCWA Region. The purpose of the publication is to provide available data and statistics on ESCWA countries' registered vital events (births, deaths, marriage and divorce), as well as the main indicators for each of these events and to compare them with the estimates prepared by the United Nations Population ~ivision'in New York. This issue includes vital statistics and indicators from 2000 to the date of preparation of this publication. Data before 2000 are available in the previous issues of the bulletin. The Bulletin has been revised where some changes have been introduced and reflected under each of its three sections. The first section covers the population in ESCWA region; the second section presents data on the fertility and mortality; and the third section provides statistics and indicators related to marriage and divorce. In order to standardize the basis of comparison, the estimates of the United Nations Population Division (2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 Revisions) were used as the denominator for vital events in the calculation of the rates. Data contained in this Bulletin were compiled from national statistical sources including: annual statistical yearbooks and vital statistics publications and by using questionnaires prepared by ESCWA for this issue. Data for Lebanon were obtained from the Ministry of Interior. We hope that this publication will meet the needs of data users, especially researchers, academics and those working in the field of population, reproductive health and development by providing a comprehensive picture on population growth and its dynamics. Last but not least, the Executive Secretary would like to thank the member states for providing her with the requested data and hope for maintaining this fruitful cooperation.

The following vital events included in the Bulletin are:
1. Live birth 2. Death 3. Marriage 4. Divorce They are defined as follows:
1. Live birth occurrence Live birth is the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy, which, after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached; each product of such a birth is considered livebirths.
2. Death occurrence Death is the pennanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place (post-natal cessation of vital functions without capability of resuscitation). This definition therefore excludes foetal death.
3. Marriage occurrence Marriage is the act, ceremony or process by which the legal relationship of husband and wife is constituted. The legality of the union may be established by civil, religious or other means as recognized by the laws of each country.
' Source: United Nations, "Demographic Yearbook 1995"
4. Divorce occurrence Divorce is a final dissolution of a marriage, that is, the separation of husband and wife which confers on the parties the right to remarriage under civil, religious andlor other provisions, according to the laws of each country. VITAL RATES' The vital rates contained in this publication are the following: I. Births and Fertility Rates: I . Crude Birth Rate (CBR)

U\J& :n
h ~ dJUO l -4
It is obtained by summing the age-specific fertility rates for single years of age over the childbearing span and it is computed on a "per woman" basis. It states the total number of children an average woman would bear during her lifetime if she were to bear children throughout her reproductive years at rates specified by the schedule of age-specific fertility rate for the particular year or time interval. It assumes that this hypothetical woman does not die before the end of her childbearing age (i.e. age 50). The TFR formula is:

5. Gross Reproduction Rate (GRR)
It is identical to TFR except that it refers to female births only. This measure indicates how many daughters a woman would bear during her lifetime if, throughout her reproductive life, she is exposed to the age-specific rate of bearing female infant that is recorded for a particular year or certain interval of time. In other words, it is based on ASFR for female births only.

111. Marriage and Divorce Rates:
10. Crude Marriage Rate (CMR) Crude marriage rate is the ratio of the marriages during the year in an area to the average population in that year. The value is expressed in 1000 inhabitants and it is calculated as:
CMR

W here:
M: is the total number of marriages occurred at a certain area during a calendar year (or annual average of an interval period).
P: is the total number of person years lived by the population, counted as the midyear population (or mid interval population).
11. The Mean Age at First Marriage: The mean age of women (or men) when they first get married. For a given calendar year, the mean age of women (or men) at first marriage can be calculated using the first marriage rates by age. Calculated in this way, the mean age is not weighted, i.e. the different numbers of women (or men) at each age are not taken into account.

12. Crude Divorce Rate
+l
Crude divorce rate is the ratio of the number of divorces during the year to the average population in that year. The value is expressed in 1000 inhabitants. It is calculated as:: -

Population
Section I of this Bulletin, entitled "Population", presents data on population size in the ESCWA region.
It contains 13 tables and 12 population pyramids for
ESCWA member countries.
(a) In this issue, twelve country tables were added on population distribution by age groups, nationality and sex, in accordance with the latest census data of member countries. All ESCWA member countries, with the exception of Lebanon, conduct a population census every 10 years. Lebanon had its last census in 1932. Almost all the countries undertook their latest censuses between 2003 and 2006. Iraq and Palestine implemented their censuses in 1997 and are expected to undertake their next round in 2007; (b) Table 13 has been added to provide a comparison between national census population data to those estimated by the United Nations Population ~ i v i s i o n 'in the same year. There are some differences to be noted between the actual population and the estimated figures;
(c) Population pyramids for 12 member countries are added in this issue. The country pyramids provide a comparative overview of the age distribution for women and men among the member countries. There are two distinct groups which the countries may be divided into. The first group of countries have a 'belle" shaped pyramid with a large base in some (Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine) and a narrow top. The second group, includes the Gulf countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE) with a skewed shape for men in the age groups 24-44. This could be attributed to the increase of working age groups of non nationals in the labor market of the Gulf countries.
l Data were taken from United Nations Population Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), World Populafion Prospecls: the 2004 revision.

Section Two crLiJJIJ ;iSFitl
Fertility and Mortality
Section I1 is on Fertility and Mortality. It presents data on births, deaths, infant deaths and causes of death in the ESCWA region from 2000 to the most recent year, for available data in each country2 . This section contains three tables with their respective graphs.
(a) Table 14, presents the registered number of live births, total number of deaths and number of infant deaths, including the calculated crude birth rate (CBR), crude death rate (CDR), rate of natural increase (RNI) and infant mortality rate (IMR) for each member country since 2000. The Table also includes the estimated rates by the United Nations Population Division for the periods 2000-2005 and 2005-201 0. The highest CBR registered in member countries in 2005 was in Syria 36 live births per 1000 population and the lowest was in United Arab Emirates 14 live births per 1000 population. The highest CDR was recorded in Egypt at around 6 deaths per 1000 population and the lowest was in Yemen at around 1 death per 1000 population. Four countries did not provide registered data on IMR, namely; Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen. The available data from some of the countries show a slight change in IMR during the reported period. However, major decreases in IMR were registered by Egypt and Oman (9 percentage points), followed by Palestine (5 percentage points) and Qatar (4 percentage points). The highest IMR was in ~ ~ at 22.6 ~ b(2004), t followed by Saudi Arabia at 19 and Iraq at around 14 deaths per 1000 live births in 2005. A bar graph in Fig. 13 presents countries' IMRs, where available, for 2000 and 2005. (b) Table 15, presents data on registered live births, general fertility rate (GFR), total fertility rate (TFR), gross reproduction rate (GRR) and mean age of childbearing from 2000 to 2005. TFR was reported by seven countries, namely; Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and UAE. Kuwait halved its TFR during the reported period to 2.3 births per woman. Although United Arab Emirates made some reductions in its TFR (0.9 percentage points) from 2000 to 2004 its TFR remains to be the highest among the reported countries in the region.
'TFR for the period 1990-2005 is illustrated in six line graphs for the following countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE. (c) Table 16, presents distribution of causes of death by nationality and sex classified in accordance to the International Classification of Diseases. In 2005 the major causes of deaths in the ESCWA region are attributed to: Diseases of the circulatory system; Symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified; and Certain infectious and parasitic diseases.
L
Only those countries for which relevant data are available have been included in the tables, and averages have
been calculated on the basis of national figures. For data before 2000, refer to the previous issues.

Marriages and Divorces
Section I11 of this Bulletin, entitled "Marriage and Divorce", presents data on crude rates of marriage and divorce in the ESCWA region from 2000 to the most recent year for which data is available for each country3. This section contains two tables and their respective graphs.
(a) Table 17, presents mean age at first marriage by nationality and sex
The data indicate that in 2005, the highest mean age at first marriage was in Jordan (29.7 years for the men and 26.8 years for the women) and lowest mean age at first marriage was in Palestine (24.7 years for the men and 19.4 years for the women) Moreover, data showed a variation among the countries in the national and nonnationalY'smean age of marriage. Non-national got married later than the national such as in Bahrain (27.7 years for the non Bahraini man against 26.2 years for the Bahraini man) (24.3 years for the non Bahraini woman against 22.5 years for the Bahraini woman) similarly in Qatar (28.9 years for the non Qatari man against 26.4 years for the Qatari man) (25.6 years for the non Qatari woman against 23.8 years for the Qatari woman) (b) Table 18, presents data on marriage and divorce crude rates;
In 2005, the highest crude marriage rates per thousand population were in Syria (10.1) followed by Jordan (9.9) and Lebanon (9.5). While Qatar (3.4), Saudi Arabia (4.3) and Kuwait (4.6) ranked the lowest crude marriage rates per thousand population. From the other side, crude divorce rates were higher in Jordan (1.8) followed by Kuwait (1.7) per 1000 population while Qatar and Egypt scored the lowest crude marriage rates per thousand population (0.8 and 0.9 respectively).
'
The rates presented in this section have been calculated on the basis of national figures for the number of marriages and divorces.
