Carnal Inheritance Kate Hill Vampire Elise is a young student on her own and struggling to make ends meet. Now she has inherited from her estranged father one of the most profitable lumber companies in the Vampire Nation. There’s just one catch. Her father’s will stipulates that she must allow the two wolf managers, Verne and Ace, to remain and help run the business. Elise soon learns that there’s more to her father’s death than she first thought and the two gorgeous wolves are far more than just business managers.
Chapter One “Unbelievable.” Marius, owner of the hotel where Elise worked, curled his lip and glanced up from his ledger. The tall, thin Vampire snarled, exposing his crooked little fangs, and shook his head. “How am I supposed to run a business when my workers always have an excuse not to work?” If she hadn’t needed money for rent and tuition, she would have told him to kiss her Vampiric ass months ago. Maybe she should have taken the money her father had tried to send her. Growing up, she and her father had always been close, but a couple of years ago he’d abruptly cut off contact with her, other than offering to pay for her college education. It made no sense. Yesterday she’d received a call from her mother, who was living on a tropical island with her latest husband, to let her know her father had been killed in a traffic accident during an early morning drive on the rural stretch of road. He’d been decapitated. Now she had nothing left of him but memories of a time when he had wanted to be part of her life. “Marius, it’s not an excuse. My sire is dead and I need the time off to attend his funeral service. By law I have the right to the time off,” she reminded him. “I know all about the law.” He waved his hand. “This modern era is all for the workers. We business owners are the ones being screwed.” As if anyone would be desperate enough to screw you, Elise thought. “Centuries ago life wasn’t like this,” he continued his rant. “Vampiresses like you plowed fields the same day they birthed their offspring. There was no such thing as unions and minimum wage. In my day, when and if someone died we didn’t make a big production out of it. Now you want time off to travel to some distant tribe to honor a sire you haven’t seen in years.”

Elise reached the end of her patience. Smiling sweetly, she said, “Marius, I don’t need the next two days off.” He narrowed his beady dark green eyes. “What?” “I don’t need them off because I quit!” He stood, nearly knocking his chair over backwards. “You quit? You can’t quit because you’re fired!” Elise turned on her heel and stalked out of his office. He followed her through the lobby, past staring guests and workers. “Good riddance to you!” he shouted. “You’re a stinking housekeeper anyway. I should have hired a wolf instead. They’re better at service jobs!” Outside, Elise stalked the dark city streets toward the shabby, one-room apartment she’d been living in while attending college. She probably should have taken her mother’s offer to live on the tropical island with her and her new husband, but that would have meant changing schools and Elise hadn’t wanted to. Unless she got another job very soon, she might have no choice. At home, she tried taking a hot shower to soothe her nerves, but as usual the best she could get was lukewarm water. Lying in bed, she stared up at the cracked ceiling and sighed deeply. She’d worry about a job after the funeral.
*** The following day Elise stood in the tomb in the tribal resting place. Her father’s ashes had just been placed in their vault and the high priest made a speech that she paid little attention to. Glancing around, she noted that of the many people present, she only recognized a few as distant relatives. Others must have been business acquaintances and friends of his she had never met. Two in particular stood out, not only because they were wolves among a mostly Vampiric crowd, but because they were uncommonly attractive. They also seemed genuinely upset by her father’s demise. They didn’t wear the usual false looks of sadness and sympathy seen on most funeral attendees. Both wolves were tall. One had a lean build, shoulder-length sable hair, blue eyes and sharp yet attractive features. He wore a well-fitted gray suit and looked rather

studious. The other -- dressed in black trousers and a blue shirt open at the throat -- was more thickly-muscled. Ruggedly handsome, he had short chestnut hair, green eyes and a trimmed reddish-brown beard. After the service ended, people dispersed, but Elise remained in the vault, still wondering how she had arrived at this moment. A fresh, arousing scent touched her nose and she turned, realizing she was not alone. To her surprise, the sable-haired wolf in the gray suit stood beside her and offered a slight smile. “Elise,” he said. Her brow furrowed. “I’m sorry, do I know you?” “No, but I saw your picture. I’m Ace, one of your father’s managers. I take care of the books for his business. You have my sincere condolences.” She held his gaze, momentarily losing herself in his blue eyes. Rather than piercing, his eyes were incredibly deep and gentle. For the first time since learning of her father’s death, she felt like grieving. Everyone else, her mother included, had treated her loss callously. As if the past couple of years could wipe away the relationship she had once shared with her sire. Looking at this strange wolf, she felt as if he understood. It was crazy. “Thank you,” she said, keeping her emotions under control. After all, just because she suddenly felt like falling apart didn’t mean he wanted to witness it. “He talked about you so much I almost feel as if I know you,” Ace continued. Now her anger flared. “Really? I thought he’d forgotten I existed.” Ace’s brow furrowed. “That couldn’t be further from the truth.” “How would you know?” “I considered him a friend.” “I’m glad you could.” She shook her head and began pacing the black marble floor. “It’s odd, but I never used to think of him like a typical Vampire. When I was younger, he actually had an interest in me. Even when I grew up he kept in touch, then all of a sudden, two years ago he wanted nothing more to do with me. I can’t help wondering what I did to make him react like that. Now I guess I’ll never know.”

“Elise, listen to me.” Ace approached and placed his hands on her shoulders. His touch heated her and again she had the urge to lean into him. There was something so strong and stable about wolves. They were such social creatures, warm and loving -- so unlike most Vampires. His beautiful blue gaze held hers. “Your father cared about you very deeply. His reasons for pulling back had absolutely nothing to do with you.” “Then why?” she demanded. “Did he tell you?” “He…” Ace sighed and closed his eyes for a moment. “He had been having some personal problems, but believe me when I say he loved you.” Elise nodded, tears welling in her eyes. At the moment life seemed almost overwhelming. She’d lost her job and her father. Unless she found employment soon, she might also lose her apartment, not to mention her chance to finish her final semester. As if sensing how she felt, Ace tugged her into his embrace. In spite of his slimness, his body was rock-hard and sinewy. He felt warm, strong, and he smelled good too. Closing her eyes, Elise allowed him to hold her for several moments. Damn. This was exactly the kind of medicine she needed. The very idea of it made her smile. What woman wouldn’t want to be snug in the arms of a cutie like this? That moment of humor helped her regain her self-control, yet she indulged herself for several seconds more, enjoying the feel of Ace’s lean, hard chest beneath her cheek, the crispness of his white cotton shirt and his delectable aroma. He cupped the back of her head, his long, slender fingers gently massaging her scalp. Finally she stood and wiped her eyes on her sleeve. “I’m sorry. Usually I’m much more collected than this.” Again he smiled slightly. “You Vampires and your self-control. There’s nothing wrong with expressing healthy emotions every now and then, especially if you’re female.” Elise laughed aloud. “Typical wolf. What does being female have to do with it?” He was about to reply when the handsome, bearded wolf in the blue shirt stepped inside. “Excuse me,” he said in a husky voice that made Elise’s belly clench

with desire. His sexy green gaze swept over her and he nodded, then turned to Ace. “We need to go. They’re waiting for us at home for the reading of the will.” Elise’s brow furrowed. “At home?” “Excuse Verne. He has limited manners,” Ace explained. “Elise, this is Verne. He’s your father’s second manager. He oversaw the workers.” “Hello.” She nodded. “What did you mean ‘at home’?” “Ace and I live in your father’s house,” Verne said. “That way we can --” “Run the business more effectively,” Ace interrupted with a slight growl. Verne’s brow furrowed and Elise had the feeling something was amiss. Very strange for the managers of her father’s business to live with him. Perhaps they were closer than she’d imagined. At least it would explain why these two wolves seemed most upset by his death. “We saw you arrived in a cab,” Ace said. “Would you like to come with us to the house? Verne’s driving.” “Yes,” she said. “Thank you.” Ace offered her his hand and she slipped hers into it. They followed Verne out of the tomb and across the manicured lawn bathed in moonlight. Several guests still lingered while others stepped into cars and drove away. A black limo rolled through the gate and pulled to a stop nearby. Two enormous wolves stepped out and one opened the door for a tall, slim, black-haired Vampire. Elise felt Ace’s hand tense against hers and Verne growled so fiercely that she jumped in surprise. The bearded wolf strode toward the newcomers, his lips drawn back and thick fangs exposed. “What the hell are you doing here, Trenton?” Verne demanded.
The Vampire smiled coolly. “Paying my respects, of course.”
“I ought to --”
“What, Verne?” the Vampire asked, his dark, piercing eyes fixed on the wolf.
“Really, this behavior is undignified, even for one such as you.” “Verne!” Ace said sharply.

“Stay out of this, Ace,” barked his friend, then turned back to Trenton and his two wolf guards who glared at Verne and growled. He was a big wolf, but these two were even bigger. And they looked tough. One even had half his ear torn off, probably from fighting with others of his kind. “Don’t think these two ugly fucks scare me,” Verne continued, glaring from Trenton to his guards. Ace let go of Elise’s hand and whispered, “Excuse me a moment.” He approached Verne and rested a hand on his shoulder. “Verne, this is Anton’s funeral. Elise is watching. This is neither the time nor the place for a brawl.” Verne gritted his teeth, but remained silent. Ace turned to their unwanted visitor and said, “Your presence here is inappropriate, Justus Trenton.” “I’ve merely come to give my condolences to Anton’s lovely daughter.” Justus turned his gaze to Elise. In spite of the fact that his eyes made her feel like she’d just been stabbed by a couple of ice picks, she stepped forward. Something told her this guy was no friend of her father. “Elise, you don’t have to talk to this scum,” Verne growled. “It’s fine,” she said, staring at Justus, refusing to allow him to intimidate her. “I’m Elise.” “Your father and I were business acquaintances,” Justus said, offering her his hand. She took it, not surprised to find his flesh as icy as his gaze. “We were about to make a rather important deal when he was struck down so cruelly by fate, but now isn’t the time to discuss it.” “No,” Ace stated. “It’s not.” Elise was shocked by the hardness in Ace’s expression. A few moments ago she have sworn he had the warmest, sweetest eyes of any man she’d ever seen. Now he looked like an alpha wolf about to defend his pack. The transformation was most unsettling.

“Then I will bid you farewell,” Justus said. “I’m sure you and I will talk again soon, Miss Sylas.” “Don’t count on it!” Verne snapped. Again Ace gripped his friend’s shoulder hard. Justus and his guards disappeared inside the limo and drove off. “Who was that?” Elise asked. “Justus Trenton. He was bargaining with your father to buy his company,” Ace explained. “We’d better get to the house.” Elise nodded and followed the wolves to Verne’s car -- an expensive little sports model. Obviously her father had paid his managers well. Maybe she should have accepted his money after all. Oh well. It was too late now. Most likely he’d leave her something, but she didn’t expect too much after the turn their relationship had taken over the past couple of years, no matter what Ace said. A short time later, Elise found herself seated in the parlor of her father’s mansion. She had only visited this house a couple of times when he had first moved into it three years ago when his company expanded. It was much as she remembered it -- decorated in rich brown and forest green with simple yet elegant oak furniture. She listened as her father’s lawyer read the will. It didn’t surprise her that Verne and Ace were left large sums of money. The shock came when the lawyer announced that the entire lumber company was left to Elise, with the stipulation that Verne and Ace remain as managers and the recommendation that she sell to Justus. The mansion was left jointly to Elise, Verne and Ace. Though she knew it was ridiculous, Elise had the strangest suspicion her father had deliberately placed her in contact with Verne and Ace. Once the few friends and relatives present left the mansion, leaving only Elise and the two wolves, the lawyer approached her. “Your father left this letter for you,” he said and handed her a sealed envelope. She took it, her brow furrowing. “Thank you.”

The lawyer nodded and Ace offered to show him out. Once they’d gone, Elise glanced from the letter in her hand to Verne, who stood with one broad shoulder leaning against the fireplace, his steady green gaze fixed on her. “I wonder what he said?” Elise murmured, turning the letter over in her hand. “Open it,” Verne suggested. He was right, of course. But why was she so nervous about opening the letter? Drawing a deep breath, she broke the seal on the envelope and unfolded the letter. My Dear Elise, I know things have changed between us over the past couple of years, but one thing that has never changed is my love for you. There are good reasons for my actions, but a letter is not the place to go into them. Besides, if you’re reading this then I’m dead so the reasons for how I’ve acted these past two years really aren’t important anymore. I’m leaving you my business, therefore all the profit you will get from selling it. A Vampire named Justus Trenton may approach you to buy the company. It is my wish that you sell it to him. However, until the company is sold, the wolves Verne and Ace are to remain as managers. This isn’t merely my recommendation, but a term that is not negotiable. Verne and Ace have been much more than business associates. They have been my closest friends these past few years. You will not find more trustworthy men among wolves or Vampires. Be happy and safe, Elise. Your Sire, Anton Sylas
When Elise finished reading, she glanced toward Verne, whose burning gaze still fixed on her. A little shiver coursed down her spine. Something told her this casuallooking -- though remarkably handsome -- wolf had far more to him than she initially thought. He emanated confidence and strength. He was the sort of man who could

either make people feel incredibly safe or scare the hell out of them. While she wasn’t a woman to be easily intimidated, she preferred the idea of staying on his good side. “My father thought a lot of you and Ace,” she said, holding up the letter. “He trusted you.” “And we trusted him,” Verne stated. “He was one of the few Vampires I did trust. No offense intended.” “Of course not,” she said with a hint of sarcasm. Ace stepped into the parlor and paused a moment, glancing from Verne to Elise. “Is something wrong?” “Not from my end,” Verne stated. “Elise?” Ace approached and touched her arm. “I’m fine. Thank you.” She smiled at him. Ace seemed so smooth and gentle he could almost be a Vampire himself. He also made her feel safe, but in a different way than Verne. Verne could get on her nerves. She could tell. Ace, however, seemed far more pleasant and reasonable. “Will you be staying at the mansion tonight?” Ace asked. “Yes.” “I’ll ask Suzi to prepare a guest room for you --” Ace paused and shook his head, smiling. “Not that you’re a guest. This is your home now.” Elise’s brow furrowed. “Yes. I’m not used to the idea.” At least now she didn’t have to worry about paying the rent on the one-room hovel back in the city. Nor did she have to worry about finding another job to carry her through the last semester of school. Still, as good as it felt to have money, she wished it hadn’t come at such a price. She also wished her father had told her face-to-face what he had written in his letter. Maybe they would have had a chance to improve their relationship. “Did you plan on moving in permanently or do you want to sell the house?” Verne asked. “If you intend to sell, Ace and I would be interested in buying you out.” “Verne, now is not the time,” Ace said quietly.

“No. It’s all right,” Elise told them. “This is more your home than mine. Truthfully I had hoped to live here for a while. At least until my last semester of college is finished. If that’s a problem --” “No.” Ace smiled slightly. “That’s not a problem at all. We’ll be glad to share the house. Won’t we, Verne?” The bearded wolf stared at Elise with such intensity her stomach clenched, whether in fear or arousal she wasn’t certain. Verne grunted softly, pushed himself off the fireplace and strode out of the room, calling over his shoulder, “I’m going to the forest. Don’t hold dinner for me.” A moment later the front door slammed shut. “You’ll have to excuse Verne,” Ace told her. “He’s a little rough around the edges.” Elise grinned and turned her gaze to Ace. “You have a talent for understatement.” “Would you like to join me for tea? I can tell you about the company, unless you’d prefer to discuss it another time.” “Now is fine.” She and Ace walked to the kitchen where he introduced her to the housekeeper, a Vampiress called Suzi, and her husband, Miles, the groundskeeper. Both were tall and thin with black hair and ice blue eyes. Elise couldn’t help thinking they looked more like brother and sister than mates. “Happy to meet you, Ms. Sylas,” Miles said with a pleasant smile. “I’ll fix your tea then prepare your guest room,” Suzi said. “Unless you would prefer to sleep in your father’s room?” “No, a guest room will be fine,” Elise said. She wasn’t yet comfortable enough in the house to take over her father’s most personal spaces. “Your father didn’t like the idea of a lot of servants around,” Ace explained once they sat in the den, drinking tea. “Neither did we.” “Exactly how long have you and Verne worked for my father?”
Kate Hill

“A little over three years, but it was only about a year and a half ago that we moved into the mansion.” “In his letter to me, my father said you were his good friends.” Ace’s smile faded, replaced by an expression of scarcely repressed sorrow. “That’s true.” She sighed. “I can’t think of a way to put this delicately, so I’ll come out and ask. Were you lovers?” Coldness crept into Ace’s eyes, nearly taking her aback. “No. We were close friends.” “I didn’t mean to offend you.” “You didn’t. I’m sorry if I sounded angry. It’s just -- let’s just say you aren’t the first person to make that assumption.” Elise felt relieved about this. There was no mistaking her attraction to Ace and she hated the thought of possibly showing interest in a man who had been her father’s lover. Somehow it just seemed too twisted. The conversation turned toward business and Elise pulled her chair beside Ace’s so they could share his computer. He showed her the company’s files and she knew that when she sold, she would gain a tremendous profit. “My father had said Justus Trenton is interested in the business.” “Yes,” Ace stated, not taking his gaze from the computer screen. A muscle jerked in his smooth-shaven cheek. “My father suggested I sell to him.” “That is a very good idea.” “Is it?” She cast him a discerning look and he finally met her gaze. “You and Verne didn’t seem to like him much.” “I’ll be perfectly frank, Elise. I detest Justus Trenton. Verne likes him less than I do.” “Then why would you want him to get this business which I know you love just from hearing you talk about it?”

“Because it’s in your best interest. Sell the company, Elise. Take the money and get on with your life. That’s the best advice I can give you.” Ace stood and walked across the room. Sighing deeply, he stared out the window to the moonlit field behind the house. Elise didn’t need her Vampiric senses to know something was bothering him deeply. Perhaps it was her father’s death, or maybe it was something else. She stood and approached, placing a hand on his back, feeling his hard muscles ripple beneath her touch. He turned to her and ran his fingertip down her cheek, then traced the shape of her lips. Elise’s eyes closed halfway and she impulsively kissed his fingertip. Glancing up, she met his gaze. A jolt of desire shot through her at the intensity in his blue eyes. “You’re even more beautiful than in the pictures your father showed us,” he said, taking her face in his hands and stroking with his thumbs. Standing on tiptoe, she leaned closer and spoke against his lips, “I wish he’d told me about you.” Before either of them realized what was happening, she kissed him. His lips were so warm, firm and moist. They moved against hers, tentatively at first, then more aggressively though never too roughly. When he pulled her into his arms, Elise went eagerly. Her hands rested on his lean waist, then slid slowly up his back to grip his broad shoulders. A soft, sensual growl escaped his throat, sending a ripple of delight down her spine. His tongue gently parted her lips and she accepted it, her own tongue meeting it thrust for thrust. This man tasted, felt and smelled so fantastic. Sure, Elise had kissed men before, but none had ever made her feel like this. It was as if she was no longer connected to the real world, but floating in a warm, dark place that felt both safe and exciting at the same time. Ace’s arms tightened around her, pressing her closer to his sinewy body. She became aware of his cock pushing against her and it thrilled her so much her pussy

flooded with heat and her clit ached with need. Her nipples tightened beneath her shirt and she moaned softly, pulling him even closer if possible. He broke contact with her lips only to cover her face with sweet, feathery kisses that made her heart flutter. Burying his face against her neck, he licked her and teased her flesh with the very tips of his wolfish fangs. Elise’s hands moved down to his ass. She stroked and grasped the rock-hard spheres. This guy was built so fucking fabulous that he left her breathless. Grasping her ass, the wolf lifted her off the ground. Chuckling softly, Elise wrapped her legs around his waist and clung to his neck as he carried her to the brown leather couch across the room. He sat and she continued straddling him. Weaving her hands through his longish sable hair, she once again opened her mouth to his probing kiss. Unable to resist, she rubbed her soft mound against the enticing bulge in his trousers. Ace’s hot, wet tongue explored every inch of her mouth. His hands moved down to rest on her waist, then he swept them upward, his fingers teasing the sides of her breasts. Elise moved back slightly, her gaze locked with his. Placing her hands over his, she guided them over her breasts. Cupping them, he kneaded gently. The passion in his eyes made her temperature rise. She’d only just met him, but already she could tell he was a complicated wolf. So much burned beneath the surface of his beautiful blue eyes. One moment he was sad and tender, the next passionate. A strange sensation washed over her when she realized an emotional connection could possibly develop between her and Ace. She’d never imagined mating with a wolf. Somehow she had always assumed she’d pair off with another Vampire. She’d hoped to find one who shared her unconventional views about marriage. Elise had always dreamed of mating based on love. For most Vampires, mating was a business arrangement. Ace’s gaze drifted to her breasts as he continued massaging them through her soft, thin sweater. Her nipples stood out stiff with pleasure and he swept his thumbs over them, making them tighten even more. Elise drew a sharp breath of desire and

kissed him again. Her hands still rested over his and she stroked the backs of them, tracing the prominent veins. He had such long, slender hands -- unusual for a wolf, but incredibly sexy. Her eyes closed, she enjoyed the sensation of his moist lips and probing tongue. “Ace, what the hell are you doing?” Verne demanded. Elise jumped, her heart pounding. Her head whipped toward Verne, who strode into the room, his teeth bared and anger blazing in his eyes. She wondered if he ever looked happy. Everything seemed to make him angry. He must have just come from the forest and by the look of him he’d been doing more than overseeing. His short chestnut hair was damp and he wore dirt-stained jeans, boots and a deep red shirt open halfway down his absolutely gorgeous, sweat-streaked chest. A mat of curling, reddish brown hair covered the steely pecs and tapered to a thin line down his well-defined abs. “Turn her loose,” Verne growled. Elise climbed off of Ace. He looked slightly stunned, but mostly annoyed. A slight blush of embarrassment also tinted his chiseled cheekbones. He stood, his expression once again calm, and faced the bigger wolf. “Calm yourself, Verne,” Ace stated. “What do you think you’re doing with her?” Elise’s initial shock turned to annoyance and she asked, “What do you care what we were doing?” Verne’s piercing gaze snapped in her direction, yet he ignored her and continued addressing Ace, “You have no business putting your hands on her, let alone your tongue.” “As Elise said, why do you care?” Verne growled louder than before. His muscles rippled and his facial features elongated slightly as he hovered between his man and wolf forms. Excitement darted through Elise and she almost hoped he’d change then and there. Werewolves, in particular the males, fascinated her. She loved the look of a

bipedal, hair-covered beast, hovering somewhere between animal and man. Looking at Verne, she could tell he’d be an absolutely stunning specimen. “It’s not right,” Verne said, his voice deep and rough. “She just lost her father and you’re taking advantage.” “What?” Ace also growled, his fangs elongating and eyes almost aglow with rage. A hint of fear struck Elise. Were they going to fight right there in the house? Ace had seemed so tame, almost Vampiric, yet he was, after all, a wolf. “Hey!” Elise’s heart pounded as she took a chance and stepped between them. She placed a hand on Ace’s chest and another on Verne’s. A twinge of desire shot through her when she felt the heat and dampness of the bearded wolf’s rock-hard chest. Ace was leaner, but beneath his shirt his body was just as hard. Elise’s head spun. This was crazy. It was the day of her father’s funeral and she was standing here in his house getting horny over his friends. “That’s enough,” she said. “Both of you calm down. Verne, it’s none of your business if I kiss Ace, just as it’s not his business if I kiss you.” Verne’s gaze swept her and for a moment his scent grew stronger, more aroused. “As if she’d soil herself with you,” Ace snorted. “Look at you. You need a shower, a shave and a charm course.” “And you need to remember where you came from,” Verne said. “You’ve been spending too much time among --” “What, Verne?” Ace goaded. “Say it.” Verne’s next growl was nothing short of a roar, yet he refrained from continuing his previous sentence. He didn’t have to. Elise realized he had accused Ace of being too Vampiric, an insult in the wolf world. Too late he remembered she was a Vampire. Yet she didn’t take his insult personally. “I admit your manners could use some tweaking,” she said to Verne. “But the shower and shave…”

Both wolves looked at her in surprise. Ace’s brow furrowed and the hint of a roguish smile touched Verne’s lips. “I’m going to my room for a while,” Elise said. She wasn’t exactly tired, but she had enough excitement for one day. Already she had too much to sort out, both with her inheritance and her attraction to her sexy new housemates. Again her head spun. She was going to be living with Verne and Ace. It should prove interesting at the very least. “Would you like me to show you --” Ace began. “I’ll show her,” Verne interrupted. They growled at each other and Elise said, “I’ll find it myself.” Before leaving the room, she brushed Ace’s mouth with a kiss, just to prove to Verne she couldn’t be dictated to. Then she kissed Verne to keep Ace’s conceit in check. Verne’s beard tickled her pleasantly. His lips were also warm, firm and a bit fuller than Ace’s. Unable to resist, she gently bit his lower lip. He growled again, this time not in anger but in arousal. Her hand cupped the back of his strong neck and her breasts brushed his broad chest. His delicious, musky scent filled her and she resisted the urge to run her hands all over him. Somehow she managed to release him and walk away calmly, without looking back. Of course they probably heard her heart pounding and caught the scent of her lust, since wolves’ senses were even keener than those of Vampires. As she left the room, she felt their gazes upon her and she smiled.
Chapter Two Ace sat behind his desk to resume work on his computer, but Verne approached. The burly, green-eyed wolf leaned close to Ace, bracing both hands on the desk. “What the hell were you doing with her?” Verne asked. Sighing, Ace leaned back in his chair and met his friend’s gaze. “You’re starting to repeat yourself, Verne.” “That girl just lost her father. We were his best friends. You’re a sleaze --” Ace snorted. “Don’t pretend you’re not attracted to her, Verne. Your scent is so strong you can’t smell anything else when you’re around her.” “Whether or not I’m attracted to her is beside the point,” Verne said through gritted teeth. “It’s not right. We promised Anton we’d stay and protect her until she sells the business. Nowhere in that promise was anything mentioned about fucking his only daughter!” “I didn’t fuck her!”
“Only because I stopped you in time.”
“For your information, she kissed me.”
“She’s probably vulnerable right now and you’re taking advantage.”
“I have never taken advantage of a female in my life. And I’m sure you’ve
noticed Elise isn’t a child. She’s a Vampiress who seems to know exactly what she wants. There is attraction between us. You know as well as I do that when a Vampire is interested in a potential partner, they don’t hesitate to make a move. They’re not like wolves who obsess about mating for life.” “So you’re saying you want to fuck her once and that’s it?” Verne bared his fangs and stalked around the desk. He spun Ace’s chair and braced his hands on the arms.

Glaring at him, Verne growled, but rather than react in anger, a slow smile spread across Ace’s slender lips. “Well, well, Verne. I’m shocked. I do believe it’s love at first sight for you.” “What the hell are you talking about?” Verne straightened and stalked the room. Pausing by the window, he glanced out. Though Verne and Ace had been raised in different packs, when they met three years ago after being hired by Anton, they had become fast friends. Ace respected Verne and his stern moral code, but sometimes it could be incredibly irritating. In spite of what Verne suggested, Ace wasn’t a rogue wolf, stalking female after female for cheap thrills. Yet he wasn’t one to turn away the possibility of an exciting relationship, either. The attraction between the wolves and Elise was a bit awkward and he’d felt some guilt as well, but the more he thought about it the less sordid it seemed. They had sworn to protect Elise and by forming a relationship with her, it would be even easier to fulfill that promise. “I mean I admit I’m attracted to her,” Ace said. “She’s beautiful and charming. But you -- Verne, I think you’ve got it bad.” “Just because I have a shred of decency --” “A shred? You’re like the poster boy for the werewolf code of honor.” “What are you trying to say?” “Only that maybe you should try acting on emotions rather than honor once in a while. One of these days you might let the mate of your dreams slip through your fingers.” “Just fulfill your promise, Ace,” Verne growled. “Don’t worry. I’m not about to let anything happen to her,” Ace said with heartfelt sincerity. A new sense of guilt washed over him as he recalled Anton. He and Verne hadn’t been able to prevent his death and they both vowed the same tragedy wouldn’t steal his daughter’s life.

After taking a hot shower, Elise stretched out on the big, comfortable bed in the guest room. It would be dawn soon and she should get some sleep, but her mind churned with too many thoughts to rest. She recalled her father’s letter, the times they’d shared and the destroyed possibility of a continued relationship. Then she recalled kissing Ace and Verne. In spite of his almost innocent appearance, Ace was undoubtedly an alpha wolf. His hadn’t been the kiss of a subservient male. His looks cleverly disguised his inner-self, and that made him dangerous -- at least to his enemies. She’d gotten a taste of what it would be like to be his lover and the memory of it sent a thrill rushing through her. Then there had been that one brief kiss with Verne. He was a more honest type of wolf. There was no disguising his alpha nature. He wore it proudly, like a medal on his gorgeous chest. She wondered how two alpha males had worked for her father without killing each other. Maybe because Ace spent most of his time in the office and Verne was more hands-on in the forest. A grin tugged at her lips. She’d like both of them to be more hands-on, specifically hands-on her. Her phone rang and her brow furrowed, wondering who would be calling. She no longer had a job and she had just spoken to her mother a few days ago. Elise reached for her purse on the night table and pulled out her phone. “Hello?” “Ms. Sylas. This is Justus Trenton.” Her stomach clenched. “How did you get this phone number?” He chuckled softly. “I wanted to remind you about the business deal between your father and me. I know he would want you to honor it. To make this as simple as possible, two of my associates will be calling on you tomorrow to finalize the agreement.” This guy completely pissed her off. Who did he think he was? “I haven’t made a decision about the business yet.”

“You’re an intelligent woman, Ms. Sylas… Elise. Do you mind if I call you Elise?” “Yes.” “There’s really nothing for you to think about, Ms. Sylas. Dealing with me is in your best interest as well as the company’s and everyone working there.” “Are you threatening me?” “I never make threats. It’s bad business. My associates will see you tomorrow. Pleasant dreams, Elise.” She switched off her phone and sat for a moment, feeling slightly ill. Fortunately her anger overcame any fear instilled by Justus Trenton. At first she hadn’t considered going against her father’s wishes. He had wanted her to sell the company and she could certainly use the money. After talking to Justus, she vowed not to sell to that slimy bastard, no matter what price he offered. There was no reason for her to sell such a thriving business. Just by looking over the files with Ace, she saw they were in excellent shape. Not only that, her father’s forestland was among the few natural resources left on his tribe’s territory. Who knew what a man like Justus Trenton would do with it? No matter what he pretended, she recognized a threat when she heard it. Damn. There was no way she would get to sleep now. She rose from the bed and pulled a bathrobe over her black silk nightgown then left her room. After walking around the house for several moments, she stopped in a sitting room down the hall from her room. The drapes were drawn, but she saw a hint of sunlight bleeding through the edges. She sat on the couch and pulled her feet up under her. Sighing, she closed her eyes for a moment. Verne’s scent grew stronger and a moment later, he stepped into the room. “Elise?” She glanced toward him, her heartbeat fluttering at the sight of the handsome wolf. By the faint aroma of soap and shampoo and the dampness of his hair, she knew

he’d recently showered. Barefoot and shirtless, he wore soft-looking cotton night pants that didn’t hide the length and muscular curves of his legs. “Are you all right?” he asked. “Not really,” she admitted. “What’s wrong?” He approached and squatted in front of her. Again her belly tightened with arousal and her nipples stiffened just from looking at him. She had the urge to place her hands on his broad shoulders, to stroke his tanned flesh, scarred in places. How would it feel to caress his powerful chest, to run her fingers through the sexy mat of hair covering his chiseled pecs? His green eyes almost glowed in their intensity and she didn’t doubt his sensitive wolf nose caught the aroma of her desire. Still he made no motion to touch her, just stared, waiting patiently for her to continue. “A little while ago Justus Trenton called me on my personal phone. I don’t know how he even got the number.” Verne’s muscles tensed visibly, like an animal waiting for the kill. “What did he say?” “He told me a couple of his associates will be coming to see me tomorrow to finalize the sale of the company.” Verne stood. “I have to wake Ace and let him know about this. I won’t go to the forest tomorrow night. We’ll both be here with you when Trenton’s people arrive.” “Ace is awake,” said the slender, blue-eyed wolf as he stepped into the room. He had removed his jacket and shoes, but still wore his dress pants and shirt, though the buttons were open, revealing his lean, muscular chest and abs. A faint dusting of dark hair brushed his pecs and belly. Elise felt another rush of desire, but she couldn’t think about it now. They had more important things to discuss. “You heard about Trenton calling her?” Verne asked.

Ace nodded. “It’s probably best that we get this transaction over with as soon as possible.” “There’s not going to be any transaction,” Elise stated. “What?” both wolves asked simultaneously. “I can’t think of a good reason for me to sell.” “Your father wanted you to. That should be reason enough,” Ace said. “It’s not. From what you showed me, this is a thriving business. Not to mention we have one of the largest natural resources on this tribe’s territory. It’s not just the forestland that we harvest and replant, but the acres of private conservation land.” “We realize the assets,” Ace interrupted. “Yes, but do you have any idea what Justus Trenton wants to do with this land or this company, because I don’t.” “He wants to clear the forest and industrialize the area,” Ace stated. Elise didn’t try to disguise her horror. “And my father approved of this?” “No,” Verne stated and Ace shot him a deadly look. Elise narrowed her eyes. “I’m getting the feeling there’s a lot I don’t know about what’s going on here. Are you two going to be straight with me or not?” Sighing, Ace approached and took her hands in his. He gazed at her with those melting eyes, but this time she wouldn’t let him get to her, either through tenderness or alpha-bullying. “Elise, listen to me. Your father wanted you to sell and take the profit.” “Why? Did Justus Trenton threaten him too?” “He threatened you?” Ace demanded. Verne growled, his fists clenched and fangs bared. “I should have killed him long ago. This time I’m not going to wait --” “Calm down!” Ace ordered. “What do you mean again?” Elise asked, stepping away from Ace, anger simmering inside her. “Did he or did he not threaten my father into selling?” “No one could threaten your father,” Ace admitted. “Anton was the most stubborn Vampire I knew. He also loved you very much, Elise. More than his own life

and definitely more than this company. That’s why you need to sell. Honor his last wish.” “He did love this company and something tells me you both do as well. Why do you want to see all this beautiful forestland ruined? Why does Justus Trenton frighten you?” “He doesn’t scare me,” Verne said fiercely. Ace lifted a hand and motioned for Verne to hold his tongue. “Elise, why do you feel so strongly about not selling?” “Because I don’t like Justus Trenton. No one has ever told me what to do, so I’m certainly not going to bend to his threats. Now that I know what he wants to do with the company, he’ll never get it away from me.” Verne stepped toward her and placed his hands on her shoulders. “You’re sure you don’t want to sell?” “I’m positive.” “Then we’ll back you up.” “Verne --” Ace warned. “I’ll back you up.” Verne shot a scathing look in Ace’s direction. “What Mr. Wannabe here does is his own business.” Ace growled, a sound more savage than any she’d heard come out of Verne. “Elise, we’re both on your side,” Ace stated more calmly. “But it’s only fair to warn you, Justus Trenton won’t back down from what he wants. Going against him could be dangerous.” “Fear is what keeps a man like him powerful,” she said. “I won’t feed into that cycle.” The wolves exchanged glances and Ace said, “Another idealist.” Verne smiled rather sadly and gently caressed her cheek with his fingertips. “You’re a lot like your father, Elise.” “I guess you mean that as a compliment?” she asked. “Very much,” he admitted.

Impulsively, she slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him. At first Verne stood stiffly, immovable as a mountain beneath her lips, but she knew by the scent of his lust he was affected. At that moment she was determined to break down this stubborn wolf’s emotional defenses. Any Vampiress worth her fangs should be able to seduce a male she wanted. And it was more than simple pride in her heritage that made her determined to have Verne. She wanted him more than any man she’d ever met, except for Ace. A thrill shot through her when she realized how much she desired both these beautiful beasts. Closing her eyes, she pressed her lush curves even closer to him. Her keen hearing detected the pounding of his heart and after several seconds he placed his large, warm hands on her waist. His fingers tightened on her and she felt the tip of his tongue tracing her lips. Elise moaned softly and opened her mouth to his probing tongue. Hers met it with long, damp strokes that made her nipples tingle and clit throb with need. Behind her, Ace rested his hands on her shoulders and growled softly in her ear, a sound of passion rather than anger. Elise reluctantly broke her kiss with Verne. Standing between the wolves, she felt small and delicate, but not vulnerable. Instead she realized the power she held over them -- the power of seduction. They wanted her just as much as she wanted them, and today of all days she didn’t want to sleep alone. These wolves made her feel safe, even with the threat of Justus Trenton hanging in the background. “Please stay with me tonight,” she asked, her gaze sweeping from Ace to Verne. “This isn’t --” Verne began. “Is this what you really want?” Ace interrupted, caressing her hair. “Yes.” She smiled, placing her hands to their faces. “Definitely yes.” Ace nodded, his eyes gleaming with passion. He brushed a kiss across her forehead. “I’ll stay with you.” Verne growled sharply.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” Elise told the chestnut-haired wolf, though she looked up at him with her most seductive expression. “I don’t like the idea of taking advantage of women.” Anger rose inside Elise and she dropped her hand from Verne’s face. “Do what you want. There are no victims in this house, Verne. Keep that in mind whenever you deal with me.” She looped her arms around Ace’s neck. He smiled and kissed her mouth, then slid an arm around her waist and escorted her out of the sitting room. Behind them Verne growled. In Elise’s room, Ace closed the door and drew the drapes. He lit a fire in the hearth and she undressed to her bra and panties. Usually Vampires weren’t shy about lust and while she wasn’t embarrassed about stripping to the skin in front of a man she’d just met, she felt different about being with Ace. For some reason he meant more to her than a cheap thrill. She knew in her heart these next moments would be special and remain locked in her memory forever. He stood from where he squatted by the fire and turned to her. His heated gaze roamed over her and seemed to awaken every nerve in her body. Other than a quiver of desire, she remained still as he stepped close to her and unfastened the clasp on the front of her bra. His hands brushed her flesh as he slid the straps down her shoulders. The bra fell to the floor, completely baring her breasts to his hungry gaze. He took them in his hands and squeezed gently. Her nipples rubbed against his palms and she noted that in spite of the graceful appearance of his hands, he had typical wolf palms -- the skin thick and a little rough. It felt so good against her smooth, sensitive breasts that she couldn’t keep from moaning softly. Ace lifted one of her breasts and leaned down to capture the nipple between his lips. Raw lust shot through her at the first sweep of his tongue over the stiff bud. He sucked it and tenderly scraped his teeth over it. Elise’s pulse quickened and her pussy ached with need. Dampness flooded her panties and her clit buzzed, longing for the feel of this gorgeous wolf’s mouth upon it.

Releasing her nipple, Ace met her gaze and said, “You smell so good, Elise. I want to devour you.” “Be my guest,” she murmured breathlessly. He dropped to his knees in front of her and pulled down her panties. She kicked them aside and gasped with pleasure as he grasped her ass and covered her clit with his mouth. Ace seemed so refined, yet he made love just like the sexy wolf he was. His tongue lapped her flesh with wet, thorough strokes and his lips teased her throbbing little nub until she thought she might collapse from desire. Yet his strong hands supported her and she clutched his broad, hard shoulders, holding herself steady while enjoying the feel of his body. The door burst open and Elise gasped. Ace released her and leapt to his feet, glaring at Verne who strode in, his fangs bared and green eyes blazing. “I stand corrected,” Verne said, his voice rough. “I should realize no one can take advantage of a Vampire in the bedroom.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Elise demanded. “Get out, Verne,” Ace warned. “This is her room. If she wants me out, she can tell me herself.” Verne stepped toward Elise, grasped a handful of hair at the back of her head and tugged slightly, making her neck arch. Surprisingly, his touch wasn’t too rough and when she looked into his eyes, rather than raw anger, she saw lust and a hint of tenderness. She licked her lips, her breath quickening. He lowered his mouth to hers and spoke close to her lips, “What’s it to be, Elise? Is the invitation still open?” “What makes you think I want to share?” Ace stepped closer, his facial features elongating as he hovered between his man and beast forms. “What about me?” she said breathlessly. “My room. My body. My choice.” The males locked gazes and for a second she thought they were going to brawl. While wolves in their primitive form were sexy as hell, she didn’t want Verne and Ace

to shed blood over her, unless she drew it with her fangs. Tasting them was one thing. Having them fight over her was another. “She’s right,” Verne said, his voice tight with annoyance and his glare still fixed on Ace. He released his hold on her hair and she straightened. Turning her back to them, she smiled slightly, walked to the bed and stretched out on it. “I’m waiting, boys,” she purred. She hoped their lust would overcome their rivalry. The way things had been going for her lately, she needed a release from tension and making love with these two wolves guaranteed satisfaction. They shed their clothes quickly and Elise’s gaze darted from one to the other, unsure of who was sexier -- long, lean Ace or powerfully-built Verne. Ace joined her on the bed, stretching out lengthwise and guiding her legs over his shoulders so he could continue lapping her clit. Not wanting to miss the action this time, Verne lay beside her, taking one of her nipples into his mouth while he used his hand to fondle her other breast. His hot, wet tongue stroked her sensitive flesh while his big, rough hand gently pinched her nipple and kneaded her breast. At the same time, Ace sucked and licked her clit, then shifted position slightly and thrust his tongue into her pussy, swirling it and exploring her thoroughly. It didn’t take long for passion to overcome her. Moaning and writhing, she pulsed from head to toe in the best orgasm of her life. She was still throbbing in climax when Ace sat up and covered her body with his. Verne grunted in annoyance, but didn’t deprive Ace or Elise of a mutually desired fuck. Elise opened her eyes partway to watch Ace as he thrust into her. His eyes were closed and head arched back, several tendrils of his longish sable hair draping his face. She reached up and brushed his hair aside, then grasped the back of his neck and drew him closer for a kiss. “Let me bite you,” she whispered. He covered her mouth in a kiss and she bit his lower lip. Another orgasmic rush overcame her at the first taste of his blood -- so strong and wolfish. She sucked his lip and locked her arms and legs around him as he pumped into her hard and fast until he exploded.

His steely body relaxed against her and she released her hold on him and withdrew her fangs, letting him break the kiss. No sooner had Ace rolled off her than Verne mounted her. He was much heavier than Ace, but braced a hand on either side of her head, carrying most of his weight on his thickly-muscled arms. The tip of his cock pressed against her entrance, but rather than fill her with a fierce thrust, he asked roughly, “Are you ready, or do you want to rest?” She smiled, sliding her legs around him. “Rest later. Pleasure now.” Grunting with desire, he slowly filled her. Elise’s hands roamed over his beautiful, hairy chest and slid around to grip the rock-hard muscles of his back. When he kissed her, his beard tickled and scratched her flesh and she found the sensation especially arousing. Verne fucked her slowly, his steady rhythm driving her to two more orgasms. Though she loved the feel of him, she didn’t have the stamina of a wolf and had the strange feeling Verne in particular would be content to fuck like this all day. Smiling slightly, she gripped his neck and drew herself upward. One thing was sure to send him over the edge. She licked his neck and scraped it with her fangs. “You gonna bite me?” he asked, unable to keep the note of excitement from his voice. “Oh yes.” “Good.” That was all the encouragement she needed. She sank her fangs into him. The taste of his blood was just as wonderful as Ace’s. Sucking and lapping, she nearly lost herself in sensation. Her pussy clamped tightly around his cock that now stroked into her with breathtaking speed. Moments later, he howled in pleasure. She felt his powerful muscles ripple beneath sweat-dampened flesh as he came long and hard into her hot, trembling body.

“Be quiet and come with me,” Verne whispered. “We need to talk.” The wolves left the bed and Elise didn’t stir. A smile tugged at Verne’s lips. Making love with two wolves was enough to wear out any Vampire. He and Ace pulled on their pants and walked to the sitting room down the hall. Verne opened the drapes, letting sunlight pour in. Though wolves were usually nocturnal, some like Verne enjoyed the feel of the sun on their skin. That was why he sometimes liked working in the forest during daylight hours. Even though he’d spent a few hours cutting wood the night before with the loggers, he’d intended to show up for work on the day shift today. After hearing about Elise’s decision to keep the company, he decided it was more important he remain with her and Ace for the meeting with Trenton’s associates. “I know what you want to talk about,” Ace said. “You nearly told her about our suspicions regarding Anton’s death.” “Suspicions? Anton himself believed Justus threatened his life if he didn’t sell his company.” “And it was Anton’s wish that we keep that knowledge from Elise. He didn’t want her tainted by Justus. That’s why he broke off ties with her. We swore we would not let her know what was going on and we would protect her.” Ace curled his lip. “That made sense when we thought she was going to sell the company. Think about it, Verne. She needs to know the whole truth if she’s going to make an informed decision.” Verne sighed deeply and stared out the window. He saw the forest in the distance. So vast and beautiful. Much like the forest on his pack’s territory where he had spent his youth hunting and tracking. Before he left home, his father had told him to stay among wolves and not involve himself in the treachery of the Vampire Nation. What had Verne done? Gone right to work for the Vampire who had become one of his closest friends. He and Ace had used their skills as hunters to try to protect Anton Sylas, but they had failed.

“You’re right,” Verne admitted. “We need to break our promise to Anton. Maybe once Elise knows the truth, she’ll realize she should sell.” Ace snorted. “Somehow I doubt the truth will sway her in that direction. From the very little I know about that woman, I’d bet my canine teeth once she knows Justus is responsible for her father’s death, she’ll never sell to him.” “We can’t prove Justus was responsible.” “He threatened Anton. Damn it!” Ace growled and slammed his fist into his opposite palm. “We told him not to go anywhere alone. Why did he do that?” “He was stubborn,” Verne said quietly, anger and grief burning inside him. If only he and Ace had accompanied Anton that day, he might still be alive. Either that or all three would be dead, and where would that leave Elise? Completely unprotected. “Then you finally agree we need to tell her the truth?” Ace asked. “Yes. First thing tonight, we’ll talk to her.” Ace sat on a chair and leaned his head back, closing his eyes. “We really should get some sleep.” Verne grunted softly in reply, but continued staring out the window. Elise’s scent grew stronger. Verne turned toward the door just as she stepped into the room. Smiling slightly, she said, “This must be the house meeting room.” “It’s getting to be,” Ace replied. He patted his knee. “Come here and sit down, Elise.” She glanced at him with a coquettish expression that stirred Verne’s passion. He felt a hint of envy as the curvy brunette settled onto Ace’s lap. “We need to talk,” Ace said, brushing tendrils of hair from her face. “About?” she asked. “Justus Trenton,” Verne stated. “We…” “Have reason to believe he murdered your father,” Ace finished. Elise’s jaw tightened visibly and anger blazed in her eyes. “I knew it was something like that. I could tell by the way he spoke on the phone and his attitude today at the funeral. My father had no intention of selling to him, did he?”

“No,” Verne admitted. “However, he did want you to sell, if anything happened to him. He wanted to fight Trenton, but he had no desire to see you hurt.” “I’m already hurt. That bastard killed my father and threatened me.” She stood, her eyes flashing. “If you know he’s guilty, why didn’t you tell the authorities?” “We did tell them of our suspicions,” Ace said, “but there was absolutely no proof Trenton was involved in Anton’s accident. Not to mention Trenton is one of the richest men in the Vampire Nation and he is on excellent terms with the tribal leader of this territory.” “So you’re saying this filthy murderer isn’t going to be punished at all?” “And we’re also saying that your best chance of staying safe and rich is to sell the company to him,” Ace said. “No,” she stated, her voice dripping rage. “He’ll never get this company as long as I’m alive.” “Don’t say that.” Verne glared. “Your father said the same thing and look how he ended up. Why the hell didn’t he tell us where he was going that day?” The chestnut-haired wolf shifted shape so quickly that Elise leapt back in surprise, bumping into Ace. He slipped his arms protectively around her and pulled her back as Verne’s hairy fist smashed through the window. “Oh, that’s just great!” Ace shouted. “Tearing the house apart will really help the situation!” “I’m mad!” Verne said, his voice deep and rasping. Elise stared at him, both fearful and fascinated. Though he still stood on two legs, his facial features as well as his gleaming white fangs had elongated and a shaggy chestnut pelt covered him from head to foot. “I should have killed Trenton months ago,” Verne continued. “He’s got more protection than a tribal leader,” Ace told him. “You couldn’t get close enough to him.” “I could try!”

“And end up dead like my father?” Elise demanded, pulling away from Ace. She reached out tentatively and placed a hand on Verne’s shaggy chest, feeling his heat and the ripple of muscles beneath the thick fur. “I get the picture now about what was going on here. You and Ace were more than managers. You were trying to keep my father safe from Trenton. He said in his letter you were his friends. I know he wouldn’t want you to end up hurt or dead. Maybe you two should go --” “No way, sweetheart,” Ace snorted. “Unless of course you decide to sell --” “Never. At least not to Trenton.” “Then you’re stuck with us. That was the deal we made with your father,” Verne said. “Look, I’m not a child who needs protecting --” “It has nothing to do with being a child,” Verne stated. “And we’re not just here because of Anton, are we, Ace?” “No,” Ace said without hesitation. He stood behind Elise and placed his hands on her shoulders. “I admire your decision not to surrender to Trenton, and I agree with it.” “So do I,” Verne said. “Thank you,” Elise said softly and closed her eyes for a moment. Sheltered between these two strong, passionate wolves, she knew she had made the right choice. “We need to find a way to expose Trenton for what he is,” she said. “I’ve been thinking about that,” Ace told her. “And?” Verne asked. “And I’ll let you know as soon as something comes to me.”
*** Elise didn’t rest well that day. Her broken sleep was plagued by nightmares. It was comforting to have Verne and Ace sleeping on either side of her. meeting with Trenton’s associates as she was. Several times when she woke, she found him watching her, his blue eyes calm yet calculating. Between Ace’s shrewdness and Verne’s protectiveness, she knew she was as safe as she could be from Trenton. Then she realized she wasn’t the only one in danger. If Verne and Ace stood by her as they’d promised, they were also at risk. After they rose from bed that evening, washed and dressed, they sat at the kitchen table and ate the breakfast Suzi had prepared. When the housekeeper stepped out of the room to do her daily cleaning, Elise spoke to the wolves. “I know you promised my father you’d keep me safe,” she said. “But you had no way of knowing I’d decide to stay and fight Justus Trenton. I don’t want you to take unnecessary risks, so I release you from his promise.” “No can do,” Verne stated. “I’m afraid it doesn’t work that way, Elise,” Ace told her. “Besides, when we made that promise we understood it was possible you would be as stubborn as Anton. We respect that.” “And we hate Trenton,” Verne added. “So you’re not getting rid of us that easily.” “It wasn’t my intention to get rid of you,” she said, relieved they had agreed to stay. In truth, she wasn’t sure what she’d do without them. She was a business student, but she had no real experience running a lumber company. Not to mention she doubted she could defend herself against the likes of Trenton and his cronies. Her father had been an old, powerful Vampire and Trenton had ended his life. Worst of all, there was no way to prove it. They had just finished breakfast when the doorbell rang. Elise tensed and exchanged glances with Verne and Ace. Verne growled and Elise stood, but Ace gently grasped her arm and guided her back to her seat. “Let Suzi answer the door. Don’t appear anxious,” he said. “Verne, remain calm.”

“Easier said than done,” snarled the chestnut-haired wolf. “They didn’t waste any time getting here.” A moment later, Suzi stepped into the kitchen. “Ms. Sylas, a couple of men are here to see you. They say they represent Justus Trenton. Shall I show them to your father’s -- I mean your den?” “No. They won’t be staying that long,” she stated.
“If you’d like us to get rid of them for you --” Ace began, but she shook her head.
“No. I want Trenton to know I can speak for myself.”
“I understand,” Ace said. “However, you’d be wise to let us accompany you.”
She forced a weak laugh. “I’m all for that.”
Drawing a cleansing breath, she led the way out of the kitchen, followed by
Verne and Ace. They walked down the hall to the foyer where two tall, powerfully-built wolves stood -- one blond, one dark-haired. They looked like a couple of wrestlers in business suits. It seemed subtlety wasn’t Trenton’s strongest trait. “Ms. Sylas,” said the blond. “I’m S.T. and this is Ron. We’re here to arrange a time for you to meet with Mr. Trenton and his lawyer so you can finalize the sale of your company.” “I’m not selling,” she stated. S.T. lifted an eyebrow and exchanged glances with his dark-haired companion. “Mr. Trenton realizes you’re going through a difficult time due to the death of your father,” S.T. continued. “He’s willing to give you some time to think before you make your decision. Say a week --” “My decision is final.”
Ron glanced toward Ace and Verne. “Perhaps we could speak alone, Ms. Sylas?”
“Why?” Verne demanded. “So you can threaten her in private?”
“What are you trying to say?” Ron demanded. “Are you making an accusation?”
Verne growled, but before he could reply in words, Ace placed a firm hand on
his shoulder and Elise said, “Anything we have to discuss can be done in front of my associates. And actually there is nothing left to talk about. Goodbye.”

“Ms. Sylas --” Ron began. “It’s time you left,” Ace stated with that badass look in his eyes. Elise’s stomach tightened. That boy could probably stare down a pack of starving werewolves, let alone these two thugs. S.T. offered an insincere smile and said, “It looks like you’re a determined young woman. We’ll let Mr. Trenton know about your decision.” Her unwanted guests left and Verne slammed the door after them. “Somehow I doubt this is over,” Elise said. “You can bet on that,” Ace told her. “If you two will be all right here, I should get to the forest,” Verne said. “We’re fine.” Ace turned to Elise. “Unless you have other plans, feel free to join me at the office.” “That’s a good idea,” she said. “But first I’m going back to the city and withdraw from my classes for this semester.” “You’re quitting school?” Ace narrowed his eyes. “Bad idea.” “I’m not quitting. Just postponing my last semester so I can concentrate on learning this business.” “That’s what you have us for,” Verne said. “I don’t intend to just sit back and collect the profits,” Elise informed them. “That’s not my style. Besides, when I graduate I’ll have a business degree I want to put to use right here. Do you guys have a problem with a hands-on boss?” “Not at all.” Ace grinned and nuzzled her neck. “I love the idea of a hands-on boss.” She braced her hands against his shoulders. “Save it for the bedroom, Ace. This is business.” He growled softly and backed off while Verne chuckled, “She got you good, Mr. Slick.” “Go chop down your logs, Verne,” Ace said. “Elise, I’ll go to the city with you.” “I --”

“He’s right,” Verne added. “You’re safer with us around for protection.”
“Are you two going to be with me for the rest of my life?”
“If we’re lucky,” Verne said, his green eyes staring into hers with such passion
that Elise felt her temperature rise. He turned abruptly and left the house. “He’s very intense, isn’t he?” Elise murmured. “You don’t know the half of it. If you’re ready we should leave now. The faster we get to the city, the faster we can return to work.”
Chapter Three After Elise withdrew from her classes and cleaned out her apartment, she and Ace went to the company’s office located about a mile from the main city. He gave her a tour of the building, then they spent most of the night in his office where he began teaching her about the business. Elise became so immersed in learning all she could that for a while she forgot about Justus Trenton and his threats. It was early morning and all the workers except for the security guards had gone home for the day when Ace approached Elise, who sat behind his desk, poring over his computer monitor. He placed his hands on her shoulders and massaged gently, loosening the tension. She closed her eyes momentarily and said, “That feels so good.” Ace leaned down and whispered in her ear, “I know something that feels even better.” A ripple of pure pleasure darted through her when he swept her hair aside and pressed feathery kisses to the back of her neck. His hands slipped around to unbutton her shirt and he slid it down her shoulders, baring more of her flesh to his teasing lips and tongue. “That does feel wonderful,” she murmured, leaning forward so he could unhook her bra. Crossing her arms over her full breasts, she glanced at him over her shoulder. “What if one of the security guards walks in?” “I locked the door,” he said, placing a fingertip beneath her chin and brushing her lips with a kiss. “Now relax.” He reached over and turned off the computer and monitor. “Hey, I was reading that,” she protested.

He smiled, a roguish look in his eyes that made her wish he’d fuck her then and there. It seemed her wish was about to come true. Growling softly, he loosened his tie and began unbuttoning his shirt. “Let me,” she said and stood, reaching for his shirt, but he grasped her waist and lifted her onto the desk. Parting her legs, he stepped between them and placed her hands to his chest. “I’m all yours, gorgeous.” “Hmm. I like the sound of that.” She slowly unfastened his buttons then parted the crisp cotton shirt and ran her hands over his lean chest. He felt so warm and hard, so wolfish. Unable to resist, she kissed across the length of his collarbone. Ace wove his fingers through her hair and she felt as well as heard the low growls rumbling in his chest. The sound aroused her even more and she slowly ran her tongue along the side of his neck, loving the texture of his skin. Closing her eyes, she listened to the rhythm of his heart. She could almost taste his blood on her tongue. Remembering how delicious he and Verne had tasted, she felt an ache in her fangs that matched the sexual ache between her legs. Taking his face in her hands, she whispered against his lips, “Let me taste you again. Please?” Their gazes met and she saw desire burning in his eyes. “It will be my pleasure,” he said. “But first…” He pushed up her skirt and massaged her inner thighs. Then he unzipped his trousers, letting his thick, beautifully-veined cock spring free. Again he stood between her legs, but this time he pulled her closer to the edge of the desk. Dipping his fingers into her pussy, he smiled and the scent of his lust grew stronger. “You’re so wet already,” he murmured. “Because you make me horny.” She grinned and looped her arms around his neck. “You gorgeous, sexy hunk of wolf.” His eyes gleamed at the compliment and she couldn’t help thinking how cute he looked. Elise took his lower lip between her teeth and gently pricked it with her fangs.

Two droplets of his delectable blood teased her tongue and she moaned, tightening her grip on him. “Impatient little thing, aren’t you?” he purred, replacing his fingers in her pussy with the bulbous, velvety tip of his cock. “Yes. Oh yes,” she breathed and wrapped her legs around his waist, forcing him in deeper. He pumped into her and tilted his head slightly, offering her his neck. Elise moistened her lips before pressing gentle kisses to his neck. She scraped her fangs against it ever so gently, then pierced the flesh. Ace gasped and trembled with desire. If Elise hadn’t been so turned-on herself, she might have smiled. Few things felt as good as a proper bite from a Vampire. As she sucked and lapped his neck, his measured thrusts became faster and more irregular. She heard the rasp of his breath, and the pounding of his heart matched hers. Elise teetered on the edge of explosion, her slick cunt clamping around his cock. The combination of his thrusting cock and the taste of his blood pushed her over the edge. She came, her entire body tingling from head to toe. Her climax spurred on his orgasm and he burst inside her, a howl of fulfillment escaping his lips. It was probably the sexiest sound she’d ever heard. Elise clung to him tightly as wave after wave of pleasure rolled through her. Then she relaxed in his arms, her cheek resting against his shoulder as she took a few moments to enjoy the aftermath. Finally she lifted her head and met his gaze, smiling. “We should probably go home. Verne might be wondering why we’re so late.” “He’s probably guessed why.” Ace grasped a handful of hair at the back of her neck and covered her mouth in a deep, penetrating kiss. When it broke, she brushed her nose against his and said, “We’ll have to make it up to him, you know. Having fun when he’s not around.” “I’m sure he wouldn’t have hesitated to do the same.”

“Then you don’t want to make love again today like the three of us did yesterday?” she asked with feigned innocence. “You are --” He gently bit her lower lip. “Yes?” “A minx.” “Does that mean you do want to join us today?” He didn’t reply in words, but the look in his eyes told her exactly what he wanted. Elise grinned and reached for her discarded clothes. When they arrived at home, Verne met them in the foyer. “Working late?” he asked rather gruffly and there was no missing the annoyance in his eyes. “Worried about us?” Ace goaded. Verne grunted and turned his gaze to Elise, who slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him. “Did you have a nice night?” “Busy. Worked our asses off as usual.” Smiling, she reached around and grasped his perfect buttocks. “Glad that was only an exaggeration. I love a man with a big, tight ass.” Ace snorted with laughter and Verne curled his lip. “I got a big ass?” “I told you eating seconds at dinner every night would catch up with you,” Ace said, a teasing glint in his eyes. “If you didn’t spend your days pushing pencils and did some real work with the rest of us loggers you’d work up an appetite, too,” Verne told him. “The big tight ass was meant to be a compliment,” Elise said. Verne narrowed his eyes at her, as if trying to decide if she was telling the truth. He must have finally believed her because he wrapped an arm around her waist and covered her mouth in a long, tender kiss. “Next time call if you’re going to be late,” he said. “That’s a reasonable request,” Elise told him, her gaze fixed on his. It was funny how Ace and Verne were so different yet both made her feel warm, sexy and feminine.

“Actually I could use a workout,” Ace said. “I’m going to shift and have a run through the woods.” “Good. Then Elise and I can spend some time alone.” “On second thought, maybe I’ll stick around for a while,” Ace said, narrowing his eyes. “You had her to yourself all day,” Verne told him. “Go for a run.” “When you get back we’ll meet you in bed,” Elise said, stepping away from Verne and placing her hands on Ace’s chest. “My bed this time. It’s bigger,” Verne said. Ace didn’t look thrilled about leaving, but his wolfish need for exercise must have overcome him and he said, “I’m going to change.” He jogged up the stairs toward his room. “Did you get the feel of the business tonight?” Verne asked. “Or did you just get the feel of Ace?” “Are you jealous?” He shrugged. “Because he got to spend the night with a gorgeous Vampire and I got stuck cutting timber with a bunch of sweaty guys? Nah. Why would I be jealous?” She giggled and cuddled close to his side on the way up the stairs. Halfway down the hall, Ace, in his wolf form, stepped out of his bedroom. Desire shot through Elise at the sight of his tall, rangy body, unclothed and covered with a sleek sable pelt. She couldn’t help staring at his sizeable cock and balls. There was something absolutely irresistible about a werewolf in his beast form. She managed to tear her gaze from his body and noted his eyes seemed even bluer when gazing out from his hair-covered face. Ace grinned, his wolfish teeth gleaming whiter than ever against his dark fur. “Be back soon.” He strode down the hall toward the steps. “Take your time,” Verne called over his shoulder and Ace growled in reply.

Verne opened the door to his room and invited Elise inside. She glanced around, noting it was spacious and tidy. He had an enormous bed of dark wood, a matching dresser and a breakfast table in front of a picture window facing the forest. Several portraits in carved oval frames hung on the walls.
“Relatives?” she asked, looking at the pictures.
“My parents, brothers, sisters and some friends from my pack.”
“Why did you leave your pack to work for a Vampire, if you don’t mind me
asking?” “I don’t mind. I was born into a family of hunters, but lately there hasn’t been much call for the old ways in my pack’s territory. They’ve gone industrial. Trade and stuff like that. Much of our forestland is gone. It’s very sad.” “So you started working for my father because you like the forest?”
“Yes.” He approached and gazed at the portraits.
“You miss your family, though, don’t you? I know wolves have very close ties to
their pack.” “I do miss them, but I try to visit as often as I can. I’m lucky. They understood my reasons for leaving. Many wolves who break with their pack aren’t as fortunate.” “I’ve always admired the closeness among wolf families,” she admitted. “I like the idea of mating for love.” He turned to her, smiling slightly. “That shouldn’t be hard for a woman like you.” His words touched her deeply and she felt heat rise in her face. Strange that she could get naked and fuck these wolves without embarrassment, but emotional discussions were far more difficult to handle. Still, lust was an important part of Vampiric nature. Passion was something widely accepted among her kind, but innermost feelings were not usually something to be shared. Of course some Vampires broke with tradition and mated for love, even with wolves. Elise began to realize that in such a short time she was happier with these two wolves than she had been spending her entire life among Vampires.

The next evening, Ace and Elise left the office around midnight since she wanted to see the forest and meet the loggers. Though she would be spending most of her time in the office, she wanted to get to know Verne’s side of the business as well and she wanted to meet all the company’s workers. Standing in the forest, surrounded by tall trees and inhaling the crisp smog-free air, Elise once again realized how important it was to keep land such as this. As Ace had explained, they harvested trees but were sure to replenish what they took and the acres her father had designated for conservation were never disturbed. If Justus Trenton got hold of the land, he would destroy it. Elise and the wolves believed it was worth the personal risk to prevent that. She glanced at the loggers chopping and loading trees onto trucks. Ace stood speaking to one of the men, but Verne remained beside Elise, talking enthusiastically about his work. When he paused, she smiled and said, “You really do love the forest, don’t you?” “There’s nothing like it,” he admitted. “I can’t believe my own pack has forgotten the --” His brow furrowed and he inhaled deeply. “I smell smoke.” Elise breathed deeply and thought she detected the scent as well. Apparently the other wolf loggers smelled trouble, too, because they stopped working. Ace approached, looking concerned, and touched Elise’s arm. “We should get back to the house.” Now Elise could smell smoke as well as see it. Verne and a couple of wolves shifted to their beast form. Though still bipedal, the strong claws on their hands enabled them to quickly climb the tall trees and get a better view of the land. “Fire!” Verne bellowed, climbing halfway down the tree, then leaping the rest of the way and landing in a squat. “Ace, take Elise out of here and call the fire team. We have to evacuate this section.” “How bad is it?” Ace shouted.

“It’s spreading faster than anything I’ve ever seen,” Verne told him. “And heading this way.” Horror struck Elise and she felt numb as Ace grasped her arm and tugged her toward the truck. Verne approached and leaned in the window. “This fire didn’t just start on its own. It’s spreading way too fast. It’s devouring the entire east side of our forest and if the wind changes --” “Trenton,” Elise said. “I know it’s him. I can feel it.” Ace and Verne glanced at her sharply and she sensed they agreed with her. “We’re going to lose a lot of acres,” Verne continued. “The fire team will never get here in time from the village.” “I have an idea.” Ace stepped out of the truck. “Where are you going?” Elise demanded. Shifting to his wolf form, Ace continued, “Verne, keep Elise with you and your men when you evacuate. Don’t leave her alone. If Trenton did start this, then no doubt she’s in as much danger as Anton was.” “Where are you going?” Verne demanded. Ace tore the clothes off his hair-covered body and growled, “I’m going to release the dam on the western acres. We’ll be flooded, but at least we’ll have the fire under control until help arrives.” “Then drive there!” Verne ordered. “There’s not enough time. The road winds all the way around the forest. Traveling on foot I can take a direct route.” “Right through the fucking fire!” Verne reminded him. “Someone has to take the risk before this gets out of control.” “It’s already out of control,” Elise snapped. “Don’t be stupid, Ace!” “This time Trenton isn’t doing all the damage he wants,” Ace said. “I’ll go with you,” Verne told him. “No. You need to protect Elise and evacuate these workers. Besides, I’m faster than you are.”

Before they could protest further, Ace took off through the woods. “Verne, can he make it?” Elise demanded. “He is one of the fastest wolves I’ve ever known. I’m sure he can cover the distance in far less time than we can drive it, but whether or not he makes it through the fire is another story.” Elise was almost beside herself with concern, both for the land and for Ace. She knew by the look in Verne’s eyes he felt the same, yet they didn’t have time to wallow in their emotions. They worked quickly to evacuate the workers and were about to head to the house when one of the loggers who had climbed a tall tree to view the damage shouted, “Ace did it! He released the dam!” Verne and Elise exchanged glances. “Let’s go,” Verne said. “We’ll drive around and pick him up. I doubt he’ll be returning the way he came now that it’s flooded.” They hopped into the truck and took the long route to the dam. They had nearly reached their destination when they caught sight of Ace walking slowly along the side of the dirt road. He looked terrible -- his sable fur burned and matted with blood and dirt. Verne slammed on the brakes and they leapt out. “It’s about time you showed up.” Ace forced a smile and didn’t resist when Verne placed a supporting arm around him and helped him into the truck. Elise reached for the first aid kit, then realized there was little she could do to help him. “Get to the hospital, Verne,” she ordered, but the other wolf had already dived into the driver’s seat. “I’ll be fine,” Ace said. “I know you will,” she said. “But burns like this must hurt like hell.” “You have a knack for understatement. Did you see how bad the damage to the forest is?”
Kate Hill

“Not yet,” Verne told him. “Our first priority was finding you.” The drive to the hospital in the village seemed to take forever. Though Ace didn’t complain, she hated seeing him in pain. They had only known each other a short time, but she already felt close to these wolves. She hated Trenton more than ever and at the moment she hated herself for subjecting these two brave guardians to his wrath simply because she was stubborn.
*** At the hospital, Verne and Elise waited while Ace was tended in emergency. It was almost dawn when he was finally released. During the drive home, the wolves speculated about Trenton, but Elise spoke little. When they arrived at the house, Suzi and Miles met them in the foyer, looking concerned. “We were so worried,” Suzi said. “A couple of your department managers left messages for you about the damage from the fire,” Miles said. “I left the notes in your den, Ace.” “Better see to it,” the sable-haired wolf said. Elise took his hand and shook her head. “You’re going to your room and rest. The messages can wait.” “Actually they can’t. This business is --” “I’ll take care of it,” Verne said. “Elise is right. You need to get some sleep if you’re going to regenerate properly.” “No arguments.” Elise kissed Ace’s mouth before he could reply. For several moments he enjoyed the kiss, then grasped her shoulders and held her at arm’s length. “I need to talk to you two.” The look in his eyes told her he wouldn’t rest until he got what he wanted, so she nodded. “All right.” “Miles, you and Suzi can retire for the night,” Ace said. “Everything is all right here. Tomorrow night there will be a lot of work, though, due to the damage.”

The servants left and Elise suggested they talk in Ace’s room, hoping it would be easier to convince him to get some sleep. Somehow she doubted any of them would sleep much that day. In Ace’s room, Verne closed the door while Elise tugged Ace to the bed. They sat at the foot of it and she said, “Actually I wanted to talk to you guys, too. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I’m going to give Trenton what he wants.” “What?” Verne and Ace demanded simultaneously. “I don’t want to, but I’m not sure fighting him is the right thing to do. I’ve already lost my father. Tonight I could have lost both of you. I know we don’t really know each other --” “I wouldn’t say that,” Ace interrupted. “We’ve gotten pretty close over the past few days.” “I don’t usually believe in love at first sight,” Verne admitted. “But I definitely feel something intense when I’m with you, Elise.” “I know,” she said quietly, glancing from one of her wolves to the other. “That’s why I don’t want to put you in any more danger. Ace, look what happened to you tonight. Do you think I like knowing you’re hurt and this forest burned because I won’t deal with Trenton?” “How do you think we’ll feel if you give in to him?” Ace demanded. “Everything he has -- all his wealth, land and connections -- is based on how many people he’s been able to bully into doing what he wants. That doesn’t cut it with me.” “Me either,” Verne said. “Elise, we come from hunter bloodlines. That means we don’t get pushed around.” “But we also have to realize we must fight Trenton on his level,” Ace said quietly. “Your idea of fighting will probably get us killed, Verne.” The green-eyed wolf growled. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “It means, as we so painfully learned with Anton, showing physical prowess means very little. We can threaten him and brawl with his goons until our claws fall off, but he has political connections that protect him.”
Kate Hill

“So what are we supposed to do?” Elise said. “My father had connections and they didn’t help him.” “Not connections like Trenton. Remember, he’s on a first-name basis with the tribal leader of this territory,” Ace said, then sighed deeply and rubbed his temples. He turned and met her gaze. “I think we might have the opportunity to reach someone higher up, though.” Elise snorted. “Who’s higher than the tribal leader, except Lady Altah, the ruler of the Vampire Nation herself?” Ace lifted an eyebrow and Verne stepped closer. “Are you thinking about --” “Yes,” Ace said. “Two of my closest friends are the wolves who have recently mated with Pax Julien.” Elise stared at him, momentarily speechless. “The Pax Julien? The sire of Lady Altah’s heir?” “Yes,” Ace replied. “And if you follow the news, you know he’s a tremendous advocate of environmental preservation. If anyone can help us in this situation, it’s him. The problem is, I haven’t spoken to Falken and Felina in a few years.” “What happened?” Elise asked softly. “Let’s just say when I left my pack I didn’t have my family’s blessing.” “But they’re not family,” Verne reminded him. “They were your friends and I don’t recall you telling me they ever had a problem with you leaving the pack.” Ace shot a warning look in Verne’s direction. “Don’t start on that again.” “I know you had problems with your family, Ace, but you’re the one who cut off all ties to everyone in your pack. When you first started working here I remember Felina and Falken contacting you but you --” “I don’t need a recap of my life, thank you very much,” Ace said. Verne sat beside Elise on the bed, though his gaze remained fixed on Ace. “All I’m saying is, whatever the rest of your pack thought about you working for Anton, I somehow doubt Felina and Falken are prejudiced against Vampires since they’ve just mated with one.”

Ace shot him another fierce look. “When I left my pack I said I’d never go crawling back to any of them for any reason.” “I know this isn’t easy for you,” Verne said quietly. “But some things are more important than pride.” Ace sighed again. “I’ll contact them.” “Ace, they’re your friends,” Verne reminded him. “Going to them is no slight against your pride.” “If they agree to see me, I’ll take a flight directly to them. I won’t risk calling them from here or the office.” “I agree,” Verne said. “Do you think our phones are tapped?” Elise asked, her stomach clenching. “I’m not sure. Keep this plan quiet. I don’t trust anyone. Not our workers. No one. With all the security we have around our land, the fire could very well have been set by someone who works for us.” “We should get some sleep, especially you, Ace.” The sable-haired wolf nodded. “I’ll be leaving at dusk tonight.” The three decided to spend the night in Ace’s bed this time. They undressed and Elise climbed into bed beside Ace while Verne drew the drapes and locked the door. He lay beside her and in spite of her worry, she relaxed a bit, enjoying the feel of their warm, hard bodies on either side of her. Ace lay on his back and Elise rested her head against his shoulder. Rolling onto his side, Verne draped an arm over Elise. After a few moments, Ace sighed with exasperation. “It’s no use. I’m tired, but I can’t sleep.” “Whack off,” Verne murmured, already half asleep. “What?” Ace demanded. “You heard me,” Verne grunted. “It’ll calm you down and you’ll go to sleep.” “Great advice,” Ace muttered.

Elise lifted her head and caressed Ace’s chest. “He might have a point. How about this.” She pushed off the covers, climbed between his legs and clasped the base of his cock. This seemed to wake Verne up quick. He sat up and stared at her. “Hey, Elise, I’m having a little trouble nodding off, too.” Wrinkling her nose, she said, “Nice try, but you were almost asleep already. Besides, he’s injured.” “Yeah, I’m injured,” Ace said, licking his lips, desire gleaming in his eyes. Verne raised his eyes to the heavens, but sat back as Elise leaned forward and took Ace’s cock head between her lips. She rolled her tongue over it while stroking his shaft, then she lapped the thick ivory length of him from head to base and back again. Ace growled softly and buried his fingers in her hair, holding her close while she continued licking and sucking. She removed one hand from his shaft to knead his balls while her tongue flicked the sensitive underside of his cock head. Verne moved behind her and pressed tender kisses down her spine. Elise moaned softly and squirmed a bit as pleasure grew. The very tip of Verne’s tongue slid along the indentation of her ass cheeks and a new thrill of passion shot through her. Ace’s hips arched as his desire built. Leaning forward a bit more so that Verne could continue his exploration of her ass, Elise sucked Ace more deeply into her mouth. Little ripples of delight coursed through her, especially when Verne pushed his fingers into her pussy then withdrew the wet digits and began stroking her clit. He rubbed her tender nub and gently nipped and kissed her ass while she sucked Ace harder and faster. Elise’s ragged breathing mingled with that of her wolves and their heartbeats echoed in her sensitive Vampire ears. Almost simultaneously they exploded, the wolves howling with pleasure and Elise moaning and panting their names. She and Verne collapsed beside Ace on the bed. “Did you come, too?” she panted. Verne chuckled softly. “I did the whacking off. Couldn’t help myself.”

“Sleepy now, Ace?” Elise asked. When he didn’t reply, she raised herself on her elbow and smiled. “He’s asleep.” “Don’t blame him,” Verne murmured, rolling closer to Elise and draping his arm over her again. Cuddled between her wolves, she closed her eyes and finally drifted to sleep as well.
*** They awoke around dusk and said goodbye to Ace. “I don’t like the idea of you going alone,” Elise said before he left. “We don’t have much choice,” he said. “It looks like I’m going to the office as usual. You and Verne are handling the damage control around here from the fire.” “Be careful,” Verne warned. “And contact us as soon as you can.” “I will.” “Goodbye.” Elise hugged Ace tightly and kissed him. He held her for several moments and she closed her eyes, relishing his warmth and scent. She prayed nothing would happen to him and that his friends would be able to help them. Once he’d gone, she and Verne headed for the forest. In the truck, she said, “What exactly happened between Ace and his family?” “You should probably ask him directly.” “He’s not here. Besides, he doesn’t seem to like talking about it.” “It’s not really my place to fill you in, but I’ll tell you this. He’s a very smart guy. He has a lot of business sense. Even your father would admit he’s the one who really made the difference in making this company what it is. Years back, he got a scholarship to one of the best business schools in the Vampire Nation. His family didn’t like the idea of him mingling so much with Vampires. No offense.” “It’s all right. I know lots of Vampires who feel the same way about wolves.”

“His family wanted him to stay on pack territory as a hunter. Or they would have approved of him using his skills in the guard, even if it meant working for a Vampire tribal leader.” “In other words, they wanted him to keep to traditional wolf duties.” “He didn’t want that.” “So you were talking about Ace when you said some wolves aren’t as lucky as you are when it comes to having the support of their pack?” “Pretty much. But as you said, he doesn’t like to talk about it. Even though he followed his own path, he still has the heart of a wolf. It’s painful to be shunned by one’s pack.” Elise nodded and stared out the window. The more she learned about her wolves, the more she respected them. The three had much in common, each desiring to break with the traditions of their species in one way or the other. They spent most of the night in the forest and when they stopped back at the house for a meal, Ace called to say he was doing well. He didn’t mention any details about their plan, but hinted that everything was going as they’d hoped. After dinner, while Verne excused himself for a shower, Elise walked to her father’s room for the first time since arriving at the house. It felt strange searching through his things. Seated on his bed, she looked through a photo album she had found in his closet. It contained many pictures of her as a child. Though tears sprang into her eyes, she smiled. She hated Trenton more than ever, but again wondered if fighting him was the right thing to do. Nothing would bring her father back, and by locking proverbial horns with Trenton, she risked losing Ace and Verne as well as her own life. Sighing, she closed the album. Some things were worth fighting for. There was no way she would let Trenton win. Her father thought this land was worth protecting, as did her wolves. And so did she. Elise placed the album aside and reached for a small but heavy wolf figurine carved out of stone that sat on her father’s nightstand.

A strange feeling crept through her -- sort of a sixth sense many Vampires claimed to possess. Unsure why, she rolled off the bed and onto the floor just before a bullet whizzed past her head and embedded itself in the closet door. She screamed and heard footsteps running across the room. Glancing from around the side of the bed, she saw a hooded figure dressed in black headed for the balcony. “Elise!” Verne shouted. Naked and dripping water from his shower, he burst into the room. The figure on the balcony turned and fired, striking Verne in the shoulder. He grunted in pain, but sprang toward the attacker who again aimed his gun. Terrified that Verne would be killed, Elise shouted and flung the figurine that was still clenched in her hand toward the balcony. Distracted, the assassin fired at the figurine instead of Verne, who leapt at him with wolfish speed. He knocked the hooded figure onto the edge of the balcony and the gun went off again before Verne knocked it from his grasp. To Elise’s horror, the edge of the balcony gave way and the men dropped over the side. “Verne!” she screamed. She ran to the balcony and looked down. Verne had landed atop their attacker. The chestnut-haired wolf grunted in pain as he pushed himself to his knees. Elise ran out of the room and down the hall, nearly knocking over Suzi. “Suzi, call for help! There’s been an accident.” White-faced, the maid rushed into the room while Elise raced down the stairs and hurried around the back of the house. Verne, panting and bleeding from wounds on his face, torso and thighs, sat beside the black-clad figure. He had pulled off the hood and to Elise’s horror, she saw it was Miles who had tried to kill them. “Is he dead?” Elise asked. Verne shook his head. “Unconscious.”

Suzi joined them, looking as horrified as Elise. She knelt beside her husband, whose eyes slowly opened. “What the hell were you thinking?” the maid demanded. “He paid us enough to retire,” Miles said, his voice scarcely a whisper. “All I had to do was… shoot.” “Who paid you?” Verne demanded, wrapping a clawed hand around Miles’ throat. The Vampire gasped, too weak to fight the wolf. “Let him go!” Suzi screamed, clawing at Verne. “That’s enough!” Elise grasped Suzi and twisted her arms behind her back. The woman struggled, but Elise was stronger. “I said who?” Verne growled. “Ju-Justus Trenton,” Miles said and again lapsed into unconsciousness. Verne released his hold and closed his eyes, sighing deeply. “At least now we have some evidence.”
*** It was nearly dawn when Ace arrived at the police station to pick up Verne and Elise. After Verne’s injuries had been tended at the hospital, the authorities had questioned them about the incident at the house. Elise was surprised and happy to see Ace’s friends, Felina and Falken, arrive with him along with their famous mate, Pax Julien. “I’m so glad to see you,” Elise said, embracing Ace tightly. He held her and kissed her temple. “Are you all right?” “I’m fine, thanks to Verne, and thanks to you.” “How about you?” Ace turned to Verne. “You look a little worse for wear.” “You try getting shot with a silver bullet then falling off a balcony,” the burly wolf snarled. “I already ran through a burning forest. That’s enough fun for me.” “The confession from your groundskeeper will be important in this case,” Pax said. Elise noted he looked exactly as he did in the photos she’d seen -- tall and slim

with black hair and vibrant blue eyes. She was happy to note that for a Vampire of royal blood, he seemed quite normal. “I made some phone calls and Lady Altah is ordering an investigation not only of Justus Trenton’s businesses, but also his connection to the tribal leader here. Justice will be served, Ms. Sylas.” “How about that?” Verne gave a snort of laughter. “Justice for Justus.” “It’s about time,” Ace said. “Speaking of that, was Suzi involved in this mess, too?” “It doesn’t look that way,” Elise said. “Miles accepted the bribe on his own. Suzi has gone to stay with her sister until his trial is over.” “Then we’re going to need to hire another cook and groundskeeper,” Ace said. “In the meantime, you all look like you could use some rest and a good meal,” Felina said. “I’ll be glad to cook.” Elise glanced toward Pax’s wolf mates. “I’m sorry. I'm being rude. Elise and Verne, these are my friends, Felina and Falken,” Ace said. The wolves smiled and Falken offered his hand to shake. They made a cute pair, Felina curvy and naturally pretty and Falken with the relaxed yet handsome beachcomber look. They certainly didn’t seem to be the sort of wolves who would team up with Vampire royalty, but obviously Pax wasn’t typical of his kind. “Felina is a fantastic chef,” Ace explained. “Good because at the moment I have a fantastic appetite.” Elise smiled, relaxed and happy for the first time in a long time. Somehow she knew that everything was going to be all right.
Epilogue One Year Later Elise sat at the dining table in the mansion, Verne seated on her left and Ace on her right. Several of the trio’s friends, including Pax and Falken, had joined them for a special meal celebrating Elise’s graduation. “I can’t believe I can finally go to work without listening to Ace nag me about when I’m going to finish my last semester,” Elise said. “Now we can really put you to work,” Ace teased. “No more deadweight.” “Deadweight?” Elise playfully slapped his shoulder. “Excuse me.” Earlier that year, when the trio agreed to mate permanently, Elise had made Verne and Ace full partners with her in the company. Since the fire, they had worked hard to build up the business, and it was more profitable than ever. They had also designated some of their conservation land for a park -- the only one of its kind in their tribe’s territory. Justus was serving a long prison sentence and the tribal leader had been replaced by one who seemed much more fair and honest. “Here it is,” Felina said, stepping out of the kitchen carrying a cake she had baked for the occasion. “That looks too pretty to eat,” Elise said, admiring the former chef’s handiwork. “We have to eat it,” Verne said. “It’s coconut. That’s my favorite kind.” “Then here.” Elise cut the cake and passed him the first slice. She dipped her finger into it and placed a bit of frosting on the tip of his nose. “Not funny,” he growled. “Sometimes, Verne, you have no sense of humor,” Ace chuckled.

Elise placed another dollop of frosting on Ace’s nose. He curled his lip and wiped it off. After their guests left, Elise, Verne and Ace went to their room. They had redecorated her father’s master bedroom and moved into it. When she stepped in, Elise was surprised to see flower petals on the bed and candles arranged around the room. “This is one more graduation present from us,” Ace explained. Verne swept her into his arms and carried her to the bed. He placed her on it and bent, brushing his nose against hers. “We hope it’s one you won’t forget.” “Somehow I doubt it.” Elise grinned and slipped her arms around his neck. Verne began undressing Elise, kissing every part of her body as it was bared. Ace lit the candles and shed his clothes then joined them on the bed. He took over kissing her from head to toe while Verne removed his clothes. Grasping her ankles, Verne tugged her down toward the middle of the enormous bed. Ace knelt behind her and grasped her hands, pinning them to the mattress. He bent and kissed her, his tongue slipping into her mouth and his wolfish teeth clicking against her fangs. Settling between her legs, Verne slid his hands beneath her and grasped her ass, guiding her hips upward and lowering his face to her soft mound. He nuzzled her then began licking and sucking her clit. One of his fingers slid between her ass cheeks and teased her sphincter. Elise’s heart pounded and her breathing quickened. Nothing felt better than being completely overpowered and pleasured by her beloved wolves. She couldn’t imagine being without them and thought how strange that two of the best things in her life had come from one of the worst times of her life. “Oh!” Elise cried out sharply when Ace released her hands so he could pinch and stroke her nipples at the same time Verne began lapping her clit with relentless upward strokes.

Seconds later she came, panting and squirming, though her wolves held her steady, not taking their hands and lips from her until the final delicious pulsation rolled through her body. Her eyes closed, Elise drifted in the aftermath and smiled when she felt Verne and Ace lie down on either side of her, comforting her with their warmth and love. Snug in the arms of her wolves, Elise realized she had never been this happy before. She had a thriving business, her two handsome wolves and a promising future.
