CHAPTER 1 Funny how the past could sneak up on a guy when he least expected it. Funnier still how all the emotions that came with it could be dredged to the surface with a single glance. Elliott Baldwin leaned closer to the giant bowl of popcorn on the coffee table and prayed his fellow officers couldn’t see the erection swelling his jeans. But his eyes remained riveted to the big screen plasma TV and the smiling face emblazoned over it. The face of the man he’d once loved…would always love—Neal Cassidy. Elliott stuffed his mouth full of popcorn, chewing slowly, trying to swallow past a throat gone dry. The guys around him were bullshitting about something—probably politics, maybe 1

the upcoming football game. The conversation came to him from a distance, as if he were under water. All he could hear was Neal’s voice against his ear. “I love you more than life itself.” He choked up at the memory of those words and blinked his eyes against a rush of tears. They’d been young, idealistic…stupid, as their fathers would say—did say. Elliott’s father wouldn’t talk to him until after he finished Officer Candidate School, figuring the Marine Corps had worked that out of Elliott’s system. His mother said nothing about it to him, though Elliott understood from his sister that she often wondered where she’d gone wrong “to have Elliott turn out that way.” At least his brother and sister were supportive, even if they admitted they didn’t exactly understand. They wanted him happy. It was an elusive emotion at best. Judging from the path Neal’s life had taken, Elliott had no doubt Neal’s father not only talked to him, but also still controlled those strings upon which Neal dangled. He wondered, not for the first time, if they could have made it if either of them had been any stronger, more mature, more worldly. Neither of them would have had the careers chosen for them if they had. Neal might have afforded law school with the help of his mother’s family, but Elliott wouldn’t have without student loans and working two jobs. He didn’t have a problem with that, but his brother and sister sure wouldn’t have been able to get their masters degrees without the Cassidy legacy from 2

Elliott’s “escapade,” as his sister called it. But then, would that have mattered if he and Neal were together, if they’d been allowed—if they’d fought for—the undying love they’d professed to each other? Wouldn’t they have found a way to make it work, to have it all? Now, yes. Then, he doubted it. God, Neal looked great. The camera had always loved the man. Neal’s father’s goal was clear—his son in the White House. Neal had been put on the fast-track early on. Gaining a seat in Congress would put him in line for the ultimate prize. Though his smile was bright, his wave to supporters and constituents big, Elliott couldn’t see the joy reflected anywhere in Neal’s light brown eyes. Determination was there, but no joy. Not even when he looked at the future trophy wife constantly at his side, or curled those long fingers around her shoulder. It made Elliott want to wrap his arms around the man and give him sanctuary. It made him crave to have Neal’s nimble fingers caressing his body as they had all those years ago. He gave a silent laugh. That would be a career buster for both of them. Elliott wasn’t sure he cared anymore. The Marine Corps had been good for him, more or less. But he hated the subterfuge, hated not being able to live how he wanted, of having to hide all the time. Someone had to suspect something when he quietly rebuffed attempts to hook him up with the latest friend/sister/cousin. If anyone was suspicious, the whole policy of don’t-ask-don’t-tell kept them silent on any speculations. 3

Elliott was grateful they left him alone. It eased the pressure of trying to fit in. Oh, he tried the female dating thing. Most of the women he’d met were very nice, but anything further than dinner or a drink wasn’t going to happen. He had his friendships, his work, his family—his father chalked up Elliott’s college affair with Neal as a rebellious phase and entertained no further discussion. A nice life…a lonely one, despite its richness. Seeing Neal splashed over the big screen reminded Elliott of just how lonely. He was tired of vacation liaisons and hook-ups at bars. He wanted someone. No…he wanted Neal. He remembered their first kiss and how he’d lost himself in the wonder of it. The first time they’d made love, hot hands roaming over each other, desperate to come, to please. They’d both been shaking with a combination of lust and fear. He remembered how well they fit together. The taste of Neal on his tongue. The molten heat of Neal’s mouth around him. What the fuck?” someone shouted. “I did not see that coming.” Elliott snapped his attention back toward the TV, wondering if he’d missed the start of the ballgame. Dread crawled down his spine, straight to his balls. His erection deflated. There on flat screen, high-def-see-every-zit-TV was a candid shot of him and Neal—naked on the beach and fully…involved. I can’t believe it.” “It’s him all right. But that’s no guy with him. Looks like a skinny chick to me.” “Hey…” Ken Bullock smacked Elliott’s bicep with the back of his hand. Elliott tensed, waiting for the attack sure to happen. “You gonna answer that?” He pointed to Elliott’s buzzing phone. “You’re starting to remind me of my last girlfriend and her toy.” “Only better looking,” someone snorted. That brought out howls of laughter. Elliott plucked his phone from his pocket. “How the hell can I hear anything with you guys around?” He glanced at the display and felt more dread crawl down his spine. Dad. The shock must have registered on his face. Elliott felt Patty’s hand on his shoulder and glanced up to her worried frown. “You can take the call in our room if you like. Henry and I won’t mind. It’s quiet, and you’ll have some privacy.” Before he could thank her, the call disconnected, only to be replaced by another call seconds later—this time his older brother. He punched the talk key, muttered, “Just a sec,” and followed Patty down the hall. Once behind closed doors, he finally felt safe enough to speak. 6

“I presume you saw.” “I did,” his brother replied. “What the hell, El?” “I don’t know.” But he did. Someone wanted to knock Neal out of the race for Congress and they weren’t afraid of taking others down with him. “Do you suppose his father had something to do with this? I swear if he did, I’ll—” The sentence went unfinished. There wasn’t anything to do. “He’d have too much to lose. You know that.” “Where are you now?” Wayne asked. Elliott gave a humorless laugh. “Getting ready to watch the game with some of the guys from work.” “Shit.” Elliott could almost see Wayne scrubbing his hand down his face. He was a lucky guy, having siblings this supportive. Elliott didn’t know what he would have done if Wayne and Sally had shut him out. “Yeah…but thank God for having extra long hair and being scrawny.” “Good…it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out. You know how the press gets when they have a story.” “I know.” It wasn’t like he didn’t have options outside the Marine Corps. He was a lawyer and could find work somewhere. He had money set aside so he’d be fine while he searched. But Neal—sensitive, sweet Neal—they were going to rake him over the coals. That hurt Elliott more than anything else right now. “Hey…we could tell them it’s Sally,” Wayne said. “It’s 7

not a great picture. We all look alike. With the long hair, we could pull it off. She’d go along with it. I’ll call her.” “Then he’ll be accused of having sex with a minor.” Sally had been fifteen at the time. “Oh…yeah. No good. So, what are you going to do?” “I…I don’t know.” Somehow he had to talk to Neal without rousing more suspicion, and he had a pretty good idea of where to catch him alone. He just wasn’t sure of how long it would take him to do so.

CHAPTER 2 Neal Cassidy had never known a room to be this quiet. At this point, he wasn’t sure anyone else but him was actually breathing. The den’s dark paneling felt like it was closing in on them, accentuating the tension. God only knew what was going through their minds, although it wasn’t hard to guess his father’s reaction. The candid photo was Darren Cassidy’s own doing—a product of the private investigator he’d hired to watch Neal all those years ago. All pictures and negatives were supposedly destroyed. His father had paid a small fortune to see it was done. Obviously…it wasn’t. No real surprise there, except the fact his father actually believed his money bought all. Neal hoped the shock gave him an 9

aneurysm…a fatal one. Neal didn’t waste a glance at any of them. His gaze remained locked on the picture. His cock hardened at the memory of that day, that perfect time in Elliott’s arms. Days later it was all gone. His life had been miserable ever since. If only they’d been a little less shell-shocked over the accusations flung their way, a little more confident in their love, a little more experienced in dealing with the barrage of hate…a little braver. Neal fought a sad smile. It was hard to believe they’d ever been that skinny. Harder still to believe they’d ever been that naïve. Had they gotten together now… “Please tell me that was flat-chested woman.” Arms tucked under her ample bosom, Regina Atherton rocked one crossed leg over the other. Like the men, she’d dressed in a suit…just in case a photo op came up. They hadn’t expected a bombshell like this. No one replied directly to her smart-assed comment. His campaign manager shoved to his feet, jammed his hands deep in his pockets, and started to pace. Jiggling change rattled with every step—an annoying habit in the best of moments, excruciating right now. The man’s action so resembled beating off, hands shaking in his pockets. Neal couldn’t help himself. “That exciting, huh?” he asked, shooting a glance to Bill’s hands. Bill yanked his hands free and balled his fists at his sides. “How dare you?” His face turned three shades of red, then deepened all the more at Regina’s laughter. Bill whipped around and stomped toward her. “Shut up. If you’d been fucking him more—” She lifted her perfect nose up at him, blue eyes cold as ice. “I’m not paid to fuck him, just marry him and play the politician’s wife.” Bill stared at her, eyes black with rage, lip curled in a sneer. “No, we all know who you’re paid to fuck.” Obviously Bill wasn’t too worried about keeping his job at 11

this point, or he was too angry at being blindsided by the media to think straight. The accusation didn’t fall too far from the truth. Neal knew Regina shared his father’s bed. As long as they both left him alone, he could have cared less. No, that wasn’t true. Neal did care. He feared—knew— there was more than sex going on. The bruises Regina tried to hide seemed proof that Darren used her as his punching bag, just like he had Neal’s mother. Neal tried to help Regina, to get her to leave. She turned her nose up at the suggestion every time. Regina got a cushy life. Darren got laid. Maybe if his father was really lucky, he’d score the heir he’d always wanted. Though he’d love to hear the explosion when that announcement was made, Neal couldn’t consciously allow Darren to get his claws into an innocent child. Bill jerked away from the showdown with Regina. “I asked you people a dozen times if there was anything in Neal’s past we needed to worry about. Now I find out through the news media that he’s a fucking queer!” It’d been a long time since Neal had seen his father move that fast. He fisted Bill’s tie and collar in a chokehold. “Those words will not be uttered in my house,” he said through clenched teeth. “Do you understand?” Neal thought Bill was pretty close to pissing himself. Regina tucked into the corner of the sofa, eyes wide. He understood both feelings well and had been on the receiving end of his father’s rage too often in his younger years. They hadn’t seen anything yet. Well…judging from her fear, maybe 12

Regina had. Darren wasn’t picky about who he lashed out at, verbally or physically—something Neal’s mother had learned the hard way. Maybe he’d finally crossed one of those lines Neal had warned Regina about. Bill clawed at Darren’s fingers. His garbled, “Yes,” wasn’t enough to gain him freedom. Neal had had enough. Hell…he’d had enough years ago. Why it’d taken him this long to grow balls… “Let him go…now!” Remarkably, his father did so, then straightened his suit jacket as if he’d been greatly inconvenienced by the episode. He slicked back his unruffled gray-blond hair and reached for the decanter of whiskey on the sidebar. Neal was thankful—not for the first time—that he resembled his maternal grandfather. If he’d had to look in the mirror and see Darren’s face staring back at him… He forced his disgust away. Bill readjusted his tie and turned his back on the room. He stared out the bay window, watching storm clouds pile up in the Los Angeles basin below. It was the perfect parallel to what was happening inside the Cassidy mansion. “The press will be waiting for a response from us,” he said. Neal was damn tired of the manipulation. He’d let it happen too long. It didn’t matter that he’d tried to use it to his advantage, to achieve greater good. Now it had reached out to hurt Elliott, and that was unacceptable. His leather chair sighed as he stood. Regina’s wide blue eyes followed his move, yet darted fearfully to his father. She 13

should leave while she had the chance, but Neal knew she was too greedy to do so. Or maybe it was already too late and she was simply too scared. Neal asked himself why he still cared when she hadn’t. “Tell them we do not respond to personal attacks of any nature,” Neal replied. “Our agenda is the welfare of this nation, and the focus of our campaign and our administration should I be elected will be devoted to that. If the network gave a damn about our response, they would have advised us ahead of time about the content of the release and requested comment. What they’ve done is a clear bias toward other candidates and proves they have little regard for what’s best for the American public. They should be focusing on issues, not dirt.” Bill nodded. “Good. Great spin. I couldn’t have done better myself. I’ll take care of it.” He was halfway to the door when he stopped and spoke over his shoulder. “Is it true?” “Does it matter?” Neal shot back. “Will it make me a lesser man, a poor leader?” “The moral issue—” “No one in this campaign, much less this room, has any right to be talking morals.” Bill’s shoulders sagged a little. “The…uh…other party in the picture.” “Will be protected at all costs. I’ll contact the person myself and assure the individual of that. The identity will not be revealed to you or anyone else. I’m not the only one who has a life here.” And he couldn’t say what he had could be 14

considered a life, no matter how much he’d tried to steer things in a favorable manner. Clearly someone else was still in charge, or thought he was. Neal wondered if that’s what this was about—a warning from his father. An attempt on Darren’s part to bring down what he’d built—a son growing more powerful than he. Neal raised his eyebrow, even though he knew Bill wouldn’t see it. The other two in the room would. “Understood?” “Yeah…loud and clear.” He wasted little time leaving. The ice cubes in Darren’s scotch rattled as the door closed on a soft click. “Leave us,” he snapped. Regina was on her feet a second later. Neal motioned her back down. “I’d prefer she stay.” Maybe something would happen to open her eyes. “Fine.” He smacked the glass onto the bar and poured a second drink. “What the hell happened?” Neal splayed his fingers against his chest. “You’re asking me? That takes balls. This was your game from the beginning. Your investigator. Your blackmail. Your cover-up. Don’t go pointing fingers at me. If things blew up in your face, it’s no one’s fault but your own.” “It’s your face, too, boy. Your career.” “I haven’t been a boy for a long time, Darren.” He hadn’t called him “Dad” or “Father” since the day Darren pushed his mother down the stairs in one of his frequent fits of rage. It was his first act of rebellion…one of many. But the time for subtlety was over. Darren could do what he wanted to Neal, 15

but Neal would be damned if he was taking Elliott down. “And no career is worth lying and whoring myself to you.” Glass shattered against the white marble fireplace. Neal expected no less of his father and prided himself on the fact he didn’t flinch. Regina, however, made the mistake of having a tiny squeak escape. Sensing prey, Darren targeted her. “Upstairs.” He jerked his shaking hand toward the door and stomped her way. “No.” Neal blocked his path. Darren’s blue eyes bulged, the whites flared red and brought out the gray in his blond eyebrows. Neal didn’t give a damn. If he’d stood between Darren and his mom all those years ago… “I’m going to need Regina to come with me. She is presumably my fiancée and, as I’m sure you’re aware, there’s a little damage control that needs to be done on this campaign, thanks to your previous inept duplicity.” God, Neal even sounded like his father. That was fine. He still had his mother’s heart and soul. Darren side-stepped him and walked away. How it must have killed the man to not shove Neal out of his way. Him slamming the heavy oak door to the den didn’t have the same impact, though it did make Regina jump. “You might want to pack an overnight bag,” he told her. “Unless, of course, you’d rather stay and put up with whatever he’s going to dish out.” “It’s not like you gave me a choice.” “We always have a choice, Regina. It’s a matter of being 16

brave enough to make the right choice. Tell me”—he squatted before her, forearms resting on knees—“is what he does to you really worth the money and prestige, even if it pleases your father to think you’re with me?” Tears puddled in her eyes. Neal actually felt sorry for her. He knew what it was like to feel trapped. He took her slender fingers in his. “This is your chance to get out gracefully.” He could see the debate in her eyes and really couldn’t blame her. They hadn’t had the best of relationships, not enemies, but not friends either. “How?” Her lower lip quivered. “By helping to ruin you?” That she seemed to care surprised him. “No one can ruin my life unless I let them do so. Come on.” He tugged her fingers and stood. “I want you to meet someone.” Maybe then she’d realized how much she risked by staying with Darren Cassidy. Neal hoped her family would be there to support her in the aftermath. Phillip Atherton would most likely verbally skewer his daughter for lying to them. Not anymore. Not after today. Everything was about to change. Neal would see to that. She tightened their grip and stretched to her feet. “You realize the press will follow us wherever we go.” Neal grinned. “Oh…I’m counting one hundred percent on that. Make sure you wear something nice and bright so they won’t miss you.” That got her curiosity up and chased away the haunted look in her eyes. “I’m thinking jeans and that red sweater.” 17

Regina cocked her head to one side. “Wow…we are being daring today.” “If we’re going to shock, no sense doing it in half measures.” He steered her toward the door. “Let’s hurry. I don’t want to lose the benefit of the crowd of press choking the front lawn.” In less than fifteen minutes, they were in the foyer, dragging their rolling overnight bags behind them. Everything Neal had in this house was in his bag. He never intended to step through those doors again…unless it was to help Regina finish packing all of her things. Neal was surprised Darren hadn’t challenged them at some point, but his father hadn’t bothered to show his face since he’d stormed from the den. Regina looked the most relaxed he’d ever seen her. She’d pulled her long, black hair into a ponytail, cleaned off ninety percent of her heavy makeup, and wore jeans, sneakers, and the red sweater. He opted for similar attire, choosing a yellow-gold polo shirt sure to help keep him in sight. “Ready?” He wrapped his hand around one of the double door handles. She responded with a single nod and he pulled it open…right behind Bill. His campaign manager whipped around, scowling. Neal ignored him and pressed his hand against Regina’s back, urging her onward. Microphones thrust forward, coming close to whacking their noses. They ignored them all and didn’t bother with a “no comment.” Bill was hot on their heels, making excuses to the press as Neal and Regina strode toward 18

the garage. The reporters never missed a step. It was all Neal could do not to smile. These people were as predictable as Darren and just as bloodthirsty. He pressed the remote on his key fob and the garage door rolled open. The lights on his Lexus flashed as he unlocked the doors. Regina slipped into the front seat. Neal caught Bill’s bicep before the man could duck into the back. Cameras flashed, capturing every moment. “Not you,” Neal told him. “This is one thing you won’t be able to spin.” Bill glared at him, but didn’t budge. Back to the crowd, Neal grinned. “Move away…or I’ll kiss you full on the mouth. That ought to sell some papers, don’t you think?” It definitely got Bill moving—on a beeline back to house. A few reporters followed, but most started to swarm the car. Neal slid behind the wheel, snapped on his seat belt, and started the engine. “Think I should take out a couple as I back out?” Regina laughed. More cameras flashed, capturing the moment. “Or lock them into the garage after you pull out.” “Even better.” Neal twisted around to ease the sedan from the garage. At least the reporters had the sense to move out of the way. Several dashed to their own vehicles to give chase. “Mind me asking where we’re going?” Regina asked. “Santa Barbara.” He made sure he formed the words clearly in the event anyone was reading lips. “My mother’s family as a place on the outskirts.” 19

The front door slammed shortly thereafter, and everyone in the room released a collective sigh of relief. “I’m so sorry.” Mary’s eyes swam with fresh tears as she gazed up at Neal. “It’s okay, Mom.” He kissed her forehead, then rested his cheek there. “It’s all okay.” “What happens now?” she asked. He smiled. “Well…I don’t know if it’s the right thing, but I do know what I have to do for me.” He gave her another kiss. Barbara placed her hand on his back. “She really needs to rest.” “Of course.” As they left Mary’s room, Neal turned to Bill. “It’s recently been pointed out to me that life isn’t about making easy choices. manager, I’d love to have you onboard. The focus is still on the issues, not on my sex life, though I realize that will have to be addressed so we can get back to business.” Bill lifted his chin and looked him square in the eye. “You have my support…one hundred percent.” “Good.
