A 1 Night Stand Story
-Dedication-
Written for everyone looking for a little romance to escape life’s challenges.
Back in the Saddle
Chapter One
I never thought I’d be in Montana of all places when 1NightStand matched me. Jesa stood at the entrance to the restaurant feeling ill. In front of the cute, open-air cafe, she took a deep breath, ready to face her date. “I'm here to meet Mr. Jenson.” “Follow me, miss.” She sat down at the empty table the host indicated, looked at her watch, and scowled. Early as usual, oh goody. I wish I hadn’t hurried. More time to be nervous and second-guess my choice. She fidgeted with the napkin and utensils, wishing her date would arrive. Should I just get up and leave? Her thoughts were distracted as a tall, gorgeous, young blonde woman sat down. What’s going on? Where is David Jenson? Kinky didn’t appeal to her, so whatever. I’ve never even had sex. Before a word of protest escaped her lips, a handsome waiter appeared. The blonde glanced up and smiled. “I'll have a glass of iced tea and the Cobb salad. What would you like?” She knows my name. Not fair, I've no clue who she is. “I'll take the same.” Interest in how things would play out kept her in her seat. When the waiter left, Blondie spoke again. “I'm sure you want to know where your date is. I'm his sister, Madelyn.” Eww, sister, I’m not into that kind of thing. “Don't worry.” The woman laughed. Do I seem that scared? “I'm here because I adore my brother, and I want to make sure they’ve sent the right girl.”

Jesa’s whole body sagged as relief washed over her. “How do you mean, right girl?” Can Blondie hear how annoyed I am? “David has some special concerns.” Oh, God. “What kind of concerns?” She tried to keep her voice neutral. Blondie appeared a bit nervous, not a good sign. She glanced down, unable or unwilling to make eye contact with Jesa. “He won’t take a chance at finding a girl to be happy with, so I decided it was time for him to...er...get back in the saddle again.” Suddenly, Aerosmith’s lyrics went screaming through her brain. “So why not help him with a Match dot com profile? Why go with such an exclusive service?” “I don't want him to get hurt. Tonight's a special night for him. I love my brother very much, but he's not a man most women would be able to...accept. You're an icebreaker. He thinks you're my college friend, Melissa Davenport.” “I really suck at lying. Maybe Madame Eve shouldn’t have sent me. I'm probably not right for a blind date after all. I'm not experienced with dating, and I’m nervous enough without having to lie about my name, too.” Jesa stood, finished listening to her insane ramblings, but Madelyn pulled her back down. “No, you're perfect. You look the part and carry yourself like someone with Melissa's pedigree. You’re about the right age, too. He'll believe you're Melissa.” “I don't even know the name of the school or anything about you a college friend might know. Your brother will see right through me. I don't want to be a part of something so devious.” “He'll see what we show him. That’s why I requested to meet you so early in the day. I'll give you the CliffsNotes on being my BFF, and tonight when you meet David, you won't have to lie about knowing me, because you will.” Madelyn's genuine smile made her feel even worse. She’d go on the date so her father and aunt would stop insisting on the man of their choice. If she had proof to show she was dating, her father could take his backward notions off the table and leave her alone. She wasn’t really seeking love. 2
Back in the Saddle
“Just get him to talk about himself—guys love to do that.” Madelyn sounded very confident about her acting abilities. Jesa doubted she’d live up to the woman’s expectations. The waiter brought them the drinks. Jesa thanked him and took a small sip of the delicious tea. “Why does your brother need...help? I don't have a brother—or a sister, for that matter—but I'm sure I wouldn’t want to trick them with a fake date.” “Oh, good heavens, I don't want to hurt David. I want to help him. Madame Eve told me you’d be a good choice. She told me you understand what it means to be born of the Moon Curse.” How could 1NightStand betray me? Madelyn continued with unmistakable sympathy in her eyes. “My brother has the same problem as your father, and he's been afraid to go out with women since our father died. As the eldest male, he developed the affliction. He’s not ready to take a mate. David also won’t date human girls. I don’t want him lonely anymore. If my brother can go on a date with just one regular girl, I know he’ll see he can be happy.” The picture became crystal clear. A werewolf—no wonder the guy couldn't get laid. Seeing the violence of wolves most of her life had left her bitter. Being forced into going on a date with one sucked. Not my lucky day, I guess. “Please find another woman. I'm sorry about your brother. I know the pain. My uncle was the eldest, and when he died, my dad turned. I was eleven, and the warm, fun-loving man became a cruel...animal. I didn't even know I had an uncle, until the night dad turned right in front of us. My Aunt Hazel showed up and explained; she knew how Dad felt about Mom, and that he'd never told us. Mom wasn’t his mate—she was human, without a single drop of cursed blood. My mom killed herself two nights later, and I've never been close to my father since. I can never have children—if I have a son, he'll be cursed. I'm an only child, and I want our line to die with me.” “I'm so sorry you feel like that. I understand, but David isn't like your father. He fears himself. The wolf doesn't control the man.”

Madelyn's tone irritated her. Irritation caused her to stand and take two steps away. “You can’t tell your family you’re dating, unless you actually go on one.” Jesa glared at her. Madelyn knew more than she should about Jesa’s situation. At least her flushed face and scowl made it obvious Blondie wasn't happy to pull out the or-else card. Wearing her anger, not even attempting to conceal it, Jesa stomped over to the other woman. Gracelessly, she plunked down in the chair. They sat quietly gazing at each other for a long, tense moment, sizing up the opposition, before Jesa’s words broke the tension. “Okay, you win, I’m yours. Now what?” A big smile lit Madelyn’s face. She slid a file over. Jesa flipped through the abridged version of Melissa’s life. “Now you become Melissa and show my brother he’s a good guy.” No wolf is a good guy. Although she didn’t speak the words aloud, she noted a quick flare in Madelyn’s big, brown eyes, making her wonder if the woman guessed her thoughts. Gritting her teeth, resisting the urge to get up and leave, Jesa stayed. “Melissa is a financial advisor for some large corporations. Her job works in your favor, because you can always state privacy protection. Blah, blah, can’t talk about your work, when David asks you. She loves to ride. Do you ride?” “I’m terrified of horses.” Oh, for the love of God, don’t let there be a riding demonstration on the day’s itinerary. The waiter brought their salads. For the rest of the meal, all of Melissa’s fabulous accomplishments and virtues made Jesa a bit ill. If the woman were any more skilled and amazing, she’d get sainthood—or at least her own cable television show. Jesa couldn’t resist asking her question no longer. “Melissa sounds fantastic. Why didn’t you just hook him up with the real thing?” “I want to make sure the date goes perfectly. I can’t control the real thing as I can you. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but tonight is important. Three years ago, tonight, David experienced the curse for the first time. He hasn’t dated since. 4
Back in the Saddle
Every year I watch him mope around, as dreary as dreary can be. I want to show him not to dwell on what he is. After tonight, I’m hoping he’ll have the confidence to move on.” Jesa sat thoughtfully for a moment. “What if your brother really likes me and wants to see me again? How will that help his confidence, when I say no?” Anger glinted in Madelyn’s eyes for a moment, so she amended her words. “I certainly don’t want to expose your hand in your ‘push’ to his love life.” The comment seemed to pacify the protective sister. “That’s where my exit strategy comes in. David adores his cat. I know, it’s so weird—canines usually hate cats, and cats hate them right back, but Mittens took a shine to David as a kitten. When he found the hairball injured in the horse barn, and its leg had to be amputated, David nursed the tiny thing back to health. He’s a tenderhearted man. Anyway, that cat acts as if the sun rises and sets on David’s shoulders, and he’s very fond of the animal. You need to be allergic to cats. Are you?” “Sorry, I’m not allergic, and actually fond of them. My father never tolerated them, so I had a secret cat that lived in the woods behind our home. I think I may like cats so much just because my father hates them with such a passion.” Madelyn reached into her purse, pulled out something, and passed it to her. It appeared to be a perfume vial. “You need to apply it fifteen minutes before the date ends. When he goes for the typical goodnight kiss, you need to react. By then the chemical should make your face all puffy and give you a few loud sneezes. When he asks what’s wrong, demand to know if he has a cat and tell him how filthy and awful the creatures are. Go on and on about the allergy, and about how you can’t even be around cat people. That should effectively kill any future you have with him.” Wow, devious. I’m glad I’m not on her bad side. Inventive, though. Jesa tucked the vial in her purse. “I think I know what David will expect. What time do I meet him?” “He’s been corresponding with ‘Melissa’ through email. He expects her to meet him at the Castillo Hotel in Billings. Eve emailed that you’d be staying there.”

“Your father didn’t belong to any pack, did he?” Madelyn’s change of topic surprised her. “Let’s keep me in character. Of course, human Melissa’s father wouldn’t be part of a pack. He’s an importer-exporter, according to this information I’ve been skimming.” “I just want to know, sorry.” “I grew up in Missouri and, as far as I know, Dad’s a lone wolf.” She let go of a snort at her own joke. Uncouth and loud, it reverberated in the upscale establishment. “I see. You really don’t know much about the culture of your people.” “I’m here to woo your brother out of his self-pity; you’ve no right to delve into mine. I’ve had a terrible life because of a curse. It’s not some kind of lifestyle choice, religion, or heritage. We’ve been born to a horrible curse, and I’m the last of the line in the third branch. When I die childless, the last of the Bruce blood dies with me. Then it’ll just be you Jensens and the Donalds left. That’s all I know and all I need to know.” Madelyn’s face filled with sadness, but she nodded. She changed the subject, her curiosity apparently appeased. “David is an outdoorsman. He loves the ranch; we own thousands of acres outside of Billings. Get him to talk about ranching and you’ll have an easy time keeping him from probing Melissa’s past too much. Okay, Melissa?” Jesa grinned, her spirits a bit lighter. After the date, she’d start a fresh life, away from her father, wolves, and the curse. Madelyn stood and extended her hand to her in a friendly gesture. “Now, we’re off for some shopping. I’m going to get you all kinds of pretty for my brother. Okay, that sounded much stranger out loud than it did in my head.” Laughing with genuine amusement, Jesa took the poised woman’s offered hand and stood. Madelyn left payment at the table. They headed out the door, like old friends. Madelyn’s driver opened the car door for them, and they got into the waiting Rolls Royce. For the rest of the afternoon, they shopped for Jesa’s “Melissa costume” and finished with a visit to a salon to have their hair and nails done. Engaging and fun loving, Madelyn soon had her at ease, her anxiety 6

temporarily suppressed. If the meeting had been for other reasons, she’d call the woman her friend. “Thank you, Madelyn. I genuinely hope the ruse will help your brother. If he’s half as enjoyable as you are, I’m sure I’ll be a very convincing Melissa.” “Good. You are the girl for the job. It’s a good thing I gave you the concoction in that vial. You’re very sweet, just David’s type. I’m honestly sad the date is just a ruse for you. You’re the first of our kind I’ve seen with blue eyes; that will keep him from even suspecting. Have a nice night, and remember, my brother needs confidence. I just want him to be happy.” “You’re a good sister, Madelyn. I’m sure he’ll find the right person, but just be sure if he commits to a woman like my mother, David needs to tell her the truth. Happiness can’t be based on a lie.” Madelyn nodded, and even gave her a quick hug. It seemed so odd, but she honestly liked Madelyn and felt terrible that the brief, unusual friendship had to end. Rarely had Jesa enjoyed the company of another woman her age affected by the curse. “I have to ask you one question—as myself, not Melissa.” “Please do.” Curiosity shone in the blonde’s eyes. “I…how do you do it, living with it as you do? You told me you’re engaged to a Donald man. What if David dies and you have a child?” “My Connor is the eldest; any son we have will be a wolf when his father dies.” “How can you even think about children?” “Our life isn’t what you experienced growing up. Your father didn’t handle it well, and I’m so sorry you lived through so much pain, but not all our men are controlled by the wolf. I love Connor, and I’m proud of my family. There are many stories about how the three original men—Donald, Jensen, and Bruce— became cursed three hundred years ago, but the truth seems lost. “All I know is that Connor is the most amazing man I’ve ever known. We’ll be married to satisfy the world around us, but I am his mate and already belong to him heart, mind, and soul. It’s not like a human relationship. It’s spiritual, supernatural. You’ll know if you find your mate. It only happens between our kind. I might not turn into an animal, but I’m a wolf deep down, and there are 7

things about me that I know are different. I’ve been lucky to grow up in our culture, supported and loved. “David is so good, he’s terrified to slip and become the animal one day. It’s a seductive call. Connor says the wolf is always there, begging for violence. He controls it because he loves being human as much as wolf. I’m not afraid it’ll define him. The Bruces have always kept away from the rest of us, but there are a few Bruce packs to the north, so, no, you are not the last of your family.” Jesa was shocked. “I didn’t know. My aunt always told me I’d be the last.” “I don’t know why your father and aunt didn’t embrace the rest of their family, but whatever the reason, you can choose to be whatever you like, but you’ll never actually be fully human.” It hurt to hear the words so firmly, but kindly stated. “I wish I could change what I am.” “So does David. Not because he’s ashamed, but because the first change took him by surprise.” Pulling up her sleeve, she showed her a terrible scar. “He attacked me. I knew better, but seeing him transform right in the kitchen, I couldn’t stop myself. I wanted to comfort him. It is agony. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen, but it’s horrific. Our father died unexpectedly during a full moon on David’s twenty-first birthday, and my brother wasn’t ready or expecting it. We were eating cake and laughing. He was going to meet his friends in town for a beer, and then the wolf came over him.” Tears filled her eyes and she wiped them away. “Tonight is David’s birthday as well. The best gift I can give him is hope; you’re that hope. Do you think you can make him comfortable in his own skin again?” She hoped to live up to Madelyn’s expectations. As much as she despised wolves, Jesa liked Madelyn and wanted to help David. “I’ll do my best, but that’s asking a lot for one night.” “I know, and that’s why I contacted Madame Eve. She’s amazing, and there’s something about her that…I’m sure you understand.” “I know exactly what you mean. Madame Eve is scary perceptive. I’m so surprised she sent me here. I thought she understood what I needed.”

“Eve just saw to her client’s best interests. I’m glad she sent you. It made our meeting much easier for me. I almost feel like you’re part of our pack.” Having never been part of a pack, just scared of her father and cautious of her dour aunt, the connection to Madelyn couldn’t be explain It’s probably just first date nerves. I never let people in so quickly. “If I had to be part of a pack, I’d be happy to join yours.”

Chapter Two The driver parked in front of Jesa’s hotel. She waved to Madelyn, not sure what the protocol was for parting with someone who'd commandeered your friendship for a day. Entering her room and flipping on the light to dispel the evening shadows, an email message blinked on her cell phone. You’ll do great tonight. Show David how to trust himself around a woman. Madelyn The message was short and meant as encouragement, but she wished it’d held the secret to success and not just a random blurb to bolster her spirit. Once she finished playing normal Melissa Davenport, she’d be free to live her life. Putting on the low-cut, business casual clothing she’d picked out earlier with Madelyn’s help and leaving her wavy hair loose, she returned to the vanity mirror for one last adjustment. She applied just enough makeup to look like she was trying then surveyed her reflection, satisfied. Grabbing her purse that held the allergy-simulating chemical, she left her room and went downstairs, feeling ridiculous to be searching for a stranger in the lobby. I so wish I’d asked for a picture. Awkwardly, she waited, glancing at every passing male. Then a large, warm hand touched her shoulder, causing her to gasp and spin around. Her mouth fell open. Wowza, she’d expected to be dating a troll who couldn’t get a date—the man who stood in front of her was very easy on the eyes. Tall, cute, well-dressed. He even smelled better than any other man she’d ever sniffed. Not that she went around inhaling every guy in town, but the wolf blood did make her a bit more attuned to primal things like scent. His eyes narrowed. She closed her mouth. Crap, I’m blowing it already?

Back in the Saddle
“Um, hi, I’m Melissa. Madelyn never told me how hot you are. I…she’s so pretty, I should’ve guessed, but wow, you’re super hot.” Oh my God, I sound like a flippin’ idiot. Smoking hot David glanced away and rubbed the back of his neck before turning about as if he were trying to figure out which exit to run through. “David, it’s nice to meet you. I’m only in town for the night, so I’m glad Madelyn set us up. She’s talked about you so much over the years, I feel like I know you.” “Your few emails were very short. I honestly didn’t know what to expect.” “Oh, right, emails.” “I’m not much for emailing, so impersonal. I have to do so much of it for…work, I well…I’m not very good at this dating stuff, sorry.” That uncomfortable expression settled over his face again. “I’m not either. My truck is parked in front. I’m taking you someplace special tonight.” That sounded promising. She wasn’t lying; she hadn’t had many dates. “Really, where are we going? Madelyn said it’s your birthday. Happy birthday.” “Ah, thanks, I don’t really celebrate much. Birthdays are for kids.” “I like them. Maybe I’m still a kid at heart.” Her words brought a small, sad smile to his face. “I’m taking you to my favorite place. I know you’re a city girl, but Madelyn said you love horses, right?” Oh, God, not horses. “Um, horses, right. Love ’em.” Oh, I suck at lying. “You’ll like my surprise.” Doubtful, especially if it included horses. His pickup appeared as if a monster truck had made a baby with a utilitarian work truck. “Did you design it?” David’s deep, genuine laugh sounded sexy. She blushed, glad the darkness hid her heated cheeks. “Yes, I tricked her out myself. Let me help you up.” Why did I have to wear pumps? I really wish I’d worn flats. Somehow, she managed to get into his truck. His hand brushed her bare calf; a tingle of awareness shot through her body. The heat of his touch affected her like nothing else. Her body went hot and cold and the wetness between her legs caused her to flush. He was a wolf. She’d never reacted so strongly to a simple touch before. 11
Ashlynn Monroe
David didn’t seem to notice anything odd about her reaction as he climbed up into his truck-on-steroids. She cleared her throat. “So, uh, where are we going?” “I’m taking you to my favorite place on the ranch for a moonlight picnic.” How deliriously romantic. “That sounds lovely.” Then the horror of the horse came into play. “I’m not able to ride tonight, though. I’m wearing heels and a skirt.” “I noticed. Don’t worry, I’m not planning on making you race me, but we can’t get there with the pickup. Oh God, he does plan on riding. Her palms moistened. David glanced over at her with a curious intensity. His heightened senses would make her rapid heartbeat and sweat quickly noticeable. “I’m so nervous tonight. I’ve been so focused on work I haven’t gone out much lately.” Hoping the words covered her excessive nerves, she tried not to think about how it hadn’t been a lie—she had not gone out on a date in two years. Her last boyfriend started getting serious and it caused her to back away. How could she tell a man she never wanted to have his children because of her tainted DNA? “Honestly, nothing personal, but I’m only here because my sister insisted. I’m hoping our date might get her off my back for a while. Sis set up the picnic. I also strongly suspect you never saw a single email, only sneaky Madelyn. So what does she have over your head to get you here?” She gulped. Oh, crap, now what? “Um, embarrassing photos.” Batting her eyes, she hoped the joke would break the tension. David laughed. Good God, he’s sexy as hell. Her pussy tingled just hearing his deep chuckle. Her reaction to him felt primal, and it frightened her. His soft voice deeply rumbled when he replied quietly, “I’d like to see those.” Woozy with lust, she turned around to look at him. “What?” “Those photos.” “Oh, photos, yes.” Jesa’s normally very entertaining and articulate personality lay in a mushy heap in her useless brain.
12
Back in the Saddle
Giving her a small smile, sexy David returned his attention to the road. Soon they were out of the city, and before long, the beauty of the rural ranch engaged her. Wolves—like her—could see exceptionally well in the dark. “It’s more interesting in the daytime.” David’s voice shook her out of her thoughts. “I like the night.” He scoffed. “Aren’t you afraid of what’s out there in the darkness?” “Bad things don’t have to wait for the dark.” Glancing up at him, his grin caused her heart to stop. Oh, he was very goodlooking. “I didn’t expect to like you. Damn, now I have to thank Madelyn for setting us up.” Her stomach clenched. Jesa hadn’t thought she’d like him either. I wish this was a real date. Guilt made her turn to the cool, glass window. Running a finger over her reflection, her focus stayed on the scenery. “It’s early. Maybe I’m a bitch.” He snorted. They drove for a while longer, and then he stopped at the end of the gravel road. She hadn’t expected the road to end so abruptly. He got out of the truck and rushed over to the passenger side, helping her out of the behemoth vehicle. “You’re not dressed for riding. I wish Maddy had told you to put on something suitable for exploring.” “Me, too.” She wanted to explore the uncharted wilderness of her sexuality with him. Whoa, where’d that idea come from? “Well, I guess you get to ride with me.” He walked over to a huge, brown horse and swung up into the saddle with ridiculous ease. Clearly, the horse had lived around wolves, since it didn’t shy away at his scent. As a girl, she’d gone riding with a friend, and the nice, tame pony had gone nuts and thrown her. Logical to her now because of what she was, but at the time it confused and upset her. She walked over the smaller, white horse he’d brought along tied behind and reached to pat it on the nose, trying to hide the absolute terror in her heart. The mare whinnied and danced away from her touch. She tried again and it screamed, pawing at the ground. This time Jesa stepped back. When she peered 13

up at David, he gazed back at her quizzically. The animal’s nervous sidestep told her that her scent, that of a new wolf, made the creature nervous. “I don’t think your horse likes my perfume.” “Her nose must be broken, because you smell fabulous to me.” She blushed. He extended his hand and pulled her up onto his horse. He grabbed the reins of the horse he’d intended for her, looping them around a tree. “I’ll come back for her later.” She felt small and feminine in his arms, but still riding a horse terrified her. The creature sidestepped nervously, she squeaked, grabbing onto the saddle with all her might. “Shhh, it’s all right.” Is he trying to calm the horse or me? The horse stilled and then lurched forward. Jesa sat in frozen terror as the creature trotted down the uneven trail. They left the white mare behind them and she was glad she didn’t have to ride alone, but that didn’t help her forget how dangerous her scent made horseback riding. Wolves terrified horses “So, who are you?” “What?” Panic made her voice come out in a high-pitched yelp. “The Internet is an amazing thing; it seems everyone has Facebook, even Melissa Davenport. I know Madelyn set it up, but you’re not an ordinary woman, are you? Who are you?” “I don’t know what you mean.” Crap. “Okay, time to gallop. Ya!” Jesa shrieked as the horse bolted down the dark path. “Please stop.” She shook, on the verge of tears. David slowed the animal back to a walking pace. “Stop your horse, please.” She wanted off, no more galloping for her. “Tell me what I want to know, and I’ll let you off.” I’m doomed now anyway. She hated to ruin Madelyn’s plans, but David had researched Melissa far more than his sister had expected. “My name is Jesa.” “Let me guess, is your last name Donald?” “No.” He knows. 14
Back in the Saddle
“My God, you’re a Bruce. The blue contacts are a nice touch. How is it I don’t know you?” “This is my real eye color. My mom was human.” “Huh. Where did Maddy find you?” “Will you let me off the horse?” “As soon as you tell me what I want to know.” “My name is Jesa Bruce. I’m Hadley Bruce’s daughter. My dad isn’t part of a pack, and I’m not fond of werewolves. Your sister set us up using 1NightStand.” “You’re a prostitute?” “Of course not—it’s a dating service.” She flushed, pissed off. He held her tight; if he hadn’t she’d have jumped off the horse. “Calm down. Don’t people talk to each other before going on dates? Didn’t you think it odd my sister invited you instead of me?” “I just needed to go on a date. I requested to be set up randomly, sight unseen. And Madelyn wants you to find some happiness, to be open to meeting someone.” He rolled his eyes, giving her a dry, mirthless, abrupt laugh. “Whoa.” The horse stopped. He helped her down and Jesa stood on the solid ground with relief. She turned to walk back. “Where are you going?” “Back to the truck. You will give me a ride back to town right?” “Not until after our date.” “Ah…you still want to?” “Sure, no use letting a good picnic go to waste. Why did you want a blind date?” “I just need my dad to think I’m dating. I’m a terrible at lying. If I can show him I’ve been out on a date, I’m hoping he’ll stop trying to control my fate.” He chuckled and extended his arm. “So do you require photographic evidence or will my signed testimony be enough?” She blushed and he took her hand and squeezed it before they walked on through the woods. David led the horse, the animal still undisturbed by the two wolf scents. She wasn’t willing to risk taking another ride, however. “Daddy issues, huh?” 15
Ashlynn Monroe
“Something like that. Your sister is sweet. I wish I really was her college friend. She told me why you don’t date.” He stopped a moment, wearing a tormented expression. “She talks too much.” Her steps slowed until she also stood still. “She loves you.” He made a sound of disbelief low in his throat. “You smell so damn good. Why do I feel like this?” His words caused her to shudder. Her heart felt the same way, confused. She’d never been so drawn to a man. “I know what you mean.” He suddenly released her and continued walking down the path. Bi-polar much? Finally, lights flickered in the distance. As they approached, LED luminaries brightened the path, cheerful and charming in their simplistic glamour. “Beautiful.” He glanced down at her, hearing the awe in her voice. When she looked into his face, the tension there made her uncomfortable. “What is it?” She blushed, feeling him intently gazing at her. “You.” His answer spoke to her more deeply than poetry. He pulled her close, his breath against her neck making her shudder, then he pushed her away. Jesa followed him, not sure why he’d randomly decided she wasn’t holdable anymore. The date was just a ruse. She’d be wise not to take anything personally. Too bad she’d never been wise. Her emotions all over the place, her instincts picked up on something really profound in David. On a primal level, his scent, his strength drew her to him like a moth to flame. Would he burn her? Straightening her back, she hurried to catch up to him. No, she wouldn’t allow herself to be hurt. It’s not like we’re on a real date, even if he smells like heaven and looks like sin. God, I want to sin with him. Where had that come from? I’m a virgin and I don’t want to just give myself away to anyone. He turned, torment on his face, and she stopped, almost running into him. “Sorry,” he muttered. “No worries.” I wish I knew the right thing to say. “No, I am sorry. I think I should take you back to the truck.” 16

“Why, what did I do?” Oh, good lord, I sound like a sad little girl. Please don’t send me away so soon. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell my sister what a great time we had.” “I…David, I’m sorry if I ruined our date.” “You don’t really want to be here, do you?” He sounded tired. “I do.” She blushed, and to her surprise, realized she did want to be with him. The thought of leaving without getting to know him seemed empty. “You said you don’t like wolves. I’m definitely one. I want you, Jesa. I won’t lie—if you come with me, I’m going to try and sleep with you tonight.” His blunt yet oddly polite assertion slapped her in the face, but her body responded. David wanted her. Butterflies fluttered in her stomach. She wanted him, too. Should I go for it? He held out his hand. Jesa placed hers in his, hoping he didn’t notice how her palms sweated. His slow, seductive smile sent a bolt of desire through her core. Her pussy grew hot and wet in response. She blushed, and his smile widened. Did he know how much she wanted him? He wasn’t like a human man. Could he smell her desire? “Come with me.” Those three words held so much promise. Helpless, she followed him. She’d follow him anywhere at the moment. They stepped off the path into a small grove of trees. More luminaries hung from branches and were scattered on the ground. A round table sat in the middle of the grove, and a big basket sat on it smelling delicious. David held out a chair for her as if they were in a nice restaurant instead of the wilderness, and she sat down. He smiled and opened the basket. Shaking his head and grinning, he began pulling food and wine out of the basket. “Madelyn didn’t want us to be thirsty. There are three bottles of wine in here.” Maybe a bottle or two will alleviate my nerves. David poured her a glass and then spread out plates of cheese, meat, and bread. Soft nature sounds and the delightful luminary light made it a very nice picnic. Everything tasted fresh, and after her first few bites, the nervous feelings eased slightly. She downed her first glass of wine quickly. He raised his eyebrow and smirked, filling the glass again. The red wine tasted delicious, and did help her relax. Gazing into his handsome 17

face, she knew she’d give herself to David. Her hand shook a bit as she set the glass back down on the table. “So, why don’t I know you? There aren’t that many of us. I’ve never seen you at any of the gatherings. I’ve never even heard of a Jesa Bruce.” “I didn’t know that ‘we’ got together. What kind of zoology parties do we have?” “You’re very hateful of your own kind. What happened to you?” “My father never told my mother what he was. His older brother’s sudden death sent my father into the change. Mom killed herself. I didn’t even know there were more of us until last year when I found an opened letter on my father’s desk. He’s all I’ve ever known of our ‘kind,’ and he’s not a very loving man.” “I’m sorry for you. Most wolves are more social. We are pack animals, after all. If your father had found his mate, his life would’ve been different. Did he ever tell you why he took a human bride instead of a mate?” “His mate died. My aunt told me about the girl when I showed up on her doorstep with the letter and my confusion. It was the first time she really talked to me like I could understand the curse. She’s as hard and bitter as my father.” She sighed and wiped at the moisture that started to form in her eyes. “He is trying to arrange a marriage for me, to spare me his fate, I guess. That’s why I got the hell out of there, and why I need him to think I’m actively dating.” “Good God, that’s not how we do things either. There is only one mate for a wolf, and the moment he sees on her, he knows.” David wore scary intensity on his face as he spoke. “He feels it all the way to his soul. The demand to possess her is primal, frightening, the realest emotion he’s ever had.” He stood and pushed everything onto the ground in a grand dramatic gesture. She gasped and sprung out of her chair. The crashing was followed by the horses’ nervous whinny—if it hadn’t been tied to the tree, it surely would’ve galloped away. Jesa felt like running, too, but David had her in his arms, quickly. His eyes were glowing, feral. The brown had become bright amber. “When a man—a wolf—holds his mate, he’s complete.” His lips found hers, and a soft sigh escaped her. The kiss shook her—tremendous, mind-blowing, consuming. She pulled his shirt out of the waistband of his khakis, tugging frantically at his belt. 18

Virgin or not, she went with it. Lust guided her and took her to new places. Possessed with need, she grabbed his shirt and ripped, sending buttons flying. David growled, really growled, and her pussy clenched in response. The sound from the back of her throat, a primitive reply, demanded he fuck her. She didn’t want sweet, tender love for her first time, oh, no. She wanted every moment of animalistic passion. David yanked her skirt down and slid her shirt over her head. His large, strong hands grabbed the front of her bra, rending it in two. Jesa moaned. He kissed her cleavage, licking her. His lips danced across her skin until they found a nipple. Sucking the sensitive nub into his hot mouth, he left her panting, her back arched. She clawed at his back thoughtlessly. His deep rumbling chuckle only distracted her for a moment. He soon repeated the sensation with her other nipple, and sound echoed in the trees as she cried out his name. David sucked harder until it verged on pain, but she relished the pleasure. Her hands fumbled with his belt, but he stepped back a moment to undo it for her. Her shaking body waited, leaning against the table, panting. The cool night air swirled around her, making her mind whirl with the dichotomy of sensation. First hot, then cold, Jesa felt moisture on her flushed face and experienced horror. Oh, my God. I’m crying like an idiot. She prayed he didn’t notice and wiped angrily at the tears. “What is it?” He sounded very serious and concerned. “I’m…I want you, David, but I….” Oh, I really don’t want to tell him. “Tell me.” He didn’t ask nicely. The demand of an alpha male shook her to the core of the woman and the wolf. “Don’t worry about it—kiss me.” Desperately wanting to return to the mindless place of desire, her words were meant to make him forget the tears. “Jesa, tell me why you were crying.” “I don’t know why. I’m sorry. Please don’t stop.” She flushed. Oh, great! I’m begging for sex. What will David think? What’s wrong with me? I’m not good at this. He wiped the last stray tear off her cheek. “I shouldn’t have come at you like that.” 19

“Oh, it’s okay. I…um…like it very much. Please, David.” The plea emerged from her very soul and it was quiet and breathy even to her own ears. Don’t stop. He growled, pinning her on her back to the table. His mouth roamed on her neck, and her arms twined around his shoulders helplessly. “Oh, yes.” At her happy cry, he held her more closely. He growled against her ear. The sound made her very aware that a alpha male held her. “Tell me why?” “I’m a virgin, but please, I want it to be you, only you.” I don’t know why, but I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life. Don’t say no, don’t stop. “Oh, God.” David groaned and it sounded painful then sprang away from her as if she were on fire. I should’ve lied. Her shuddering body quaked with disappointment. She should thank him, but her whole body cried out for him to make love to her with wild abandon. “I’m sorry. Forgive me.” He held out her skirt, but she didn’t take it. “No. I want you.” “It’s not right. You shouldn’t lose your virginity here, not like this.” “It feels right to me. I’ve been waiting for you.” His eyes glowed with an amber blaze and his moan made it clear she’d won. Tossing her skirt back into the dewy grass, he pounced and pinned her against the table again. His mouth found the crook of her neck, eliciting a small gasp from her. He trailed kisses down her chest and stomach, finally boosting her up to sit on the table then slowly spread her legs. His expression showed her his appreciation of her anatomy. Kneeling in front of her, his tongue delved between her legs, and she cried out at the tender invasion. She’d never experienced such a pleasurable violation before. It felt deliciously wrong. “You taste even better than you smell, sweetheart. Relax.” It was impossible to relax as the delight of his wildly lapping tongue brought the tension coiling in her center tighter until she gripped the edge of the table with shaky fingers. “Hell yeah.” She came for him. Blinding sparks behind her lids and satisfaction that robbed her of thought left her panting and groaning. 20

“Da…David, yes.” Her final little huffing gasp departed from her, and Jesa felt like Jell-O. When she opened her eyes, he knelt, looking up at her. Then his tall body stood between her open legs and the pressure of his erection against her thigh made her squirm with anticipation. “Are you sure?” If she said no, he’d accept her decision and that knowledge only made her want him more. “Please, David. I want you to be the one.” She barely knew him and yet felt a connection to him so deep it surpassed lifelong friendships. He carefully pushed into her tight opening. Is he as terrified as I am? This is so much more than sex. Oh God, he’s my…mate. His scary intense expression was replaced with joy as pleasure flooded his face. She knew the mechanics of sex, but nothing had prepared her for the actuality of being held by a man she belonged with on such an elemental level. Long fingers rubbed her clit. She moaned. Her desire built again, so close to the place of mind-numbing joy, and then David took her nipple roughly into his mouth, sending her over the edge. His cock slammed into her with tender brutality, causing her to scream. Surprised at the unexpected pain, she jerked. He stilled, and she tried to wriggle away. “Shhh. Relax—it’ll be good again, I promise.” He kissed her neck, holding her tightly, his body inside of hers. He shook. His thumb worked its way between their bodies and rubbed her again as the pain subsided. He moved slowly, at first, until her soft moans encouraged him, and his hips bucked in longer, harder strokes. Something amazing built, and she clung to him and rode the waves as the wonderful gratification continued. “God yes, sweetheart, yes.” His hoarse cry the only sound that penetrated her mindless fog of bliss. Soon they both half-leaned, half-lay, panting on the table as the last waves of gratification ebbed. He pushed the hair off her face and Jesa gazed up at him from hooded eyes. A small, shy smile formed as her lips trembled with the joy of knowing what it was like to experience a perfect orgasm. “Thank you.” A wealth of feeling lived in what he said. She gulped back the lump in her throat. She felt a bond with him. Not as if she could read his mind, but she was attuned to every tiny change in his expression. His scent had 21

changed, too, and his posture toward her was more possessive. It’d meant something to him, too, more than sex, and knowing it made her glad. “It wasn’t what I expected.” David appeared horrified, and she smiled and finished her thought before he could grow any paler. “Umm, better actually.” His relief seemed tangible as it hung in the air between them. He grinned. “I’m glad. Being inside of you is amazing. I meant what I said about a man with his mate. It’s more than I ever deserved.” He kissed her with a reverence that left her breathless. What did he mean? Then it dawned on her. She scooted back off the table, out of his arms. He sat as naked as Adam in the garden, appearing as right and confident that way as he had clothed. She scrambled, to find her clothing. Her bra lay damaged, a loss, but the panties had survived. She dressed without making eye contact with him. She found her shoes, and without a word, went running down the path. Most of the luminaries had gone dark. She didn’t need them anyway. Running as if the hounds of hell were at her heels, she never looked back. Mate…not possible. During the heat of the moment, she’d realized he was her mate, but it hadn’t fully sunk into her mind. This wasn’t something she’d ever have expected to experience. She wanted out of the were-world, not in. Suddenly her body stopped, yanked painfully. She turned and found herself in David’s arms. Gazing up into the pain on his face, her heart tore. She loved him with the primal assurance that she was meant for him, born to be his. Spitting in the face of that fate, she tried to jerk her arm free. Having a mate meant never escaping the curse, meant embracing the wolf. Every day since age eleven, all she’d wanted was to be normal, and now she faced living the rest of her life accepting her heritage. “Shhh, calm down, sweetheart.” He couldn’t soothe her like a wild horse. She wouldn’t be an animal, his animal. She wouldn’t live in fear that one day she’d wake up to discover he’d turned into an angry, bitter, abuser like her father. She pulled harder against his grip. “Don’t.” A sad warning in his tone. Finally, he let go. She twisted, caught between the urges to run away from him and to him.

“I’m not like your father, I’ll never hurt you.” Could she believe him? She desperately wanted to. “I didn’t want a mate.” Why did hearing him say it hurt? “Not until tonight, Jesa. I want you. Please, tell me this is something real.” Oh, it felt real all right—real terrifying. “I…please don’t ask me to be your mate.” Her body trembled, on the verge of tears again, and she hated that weakness. “I’m afraid I can’t ask you, sweetheart. You just are. I’m yours, too. Don’t you feel it?” “I, yes, I know.” Helplessly, she stumbled into his arms. David felt like gravity and she could no more deny the truth, the need, than her mate could. “How is this possible?” She glanced up into his beautiful face. David smelled even better than he had earlier, more earthy. “I don’t know how, but I’m one lucky man. I’ve been so afraid I wouldn’t be able to control my wolf. I’ve been afraid to find my mate, afraid it would make me more like the wolf and less like the man. The wolf’s primal need for violence isn’t who I am. I’ve been trying so hard not to be the animal. I’ve forgotten how to enjoy the needs of the man. Being with you, I feel more like a man then I have in years. You give me strength. I’m not afraid of hurting you.” His lips descended to hers, and she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling him close. When her mate finally pulled away, she reluctantly released him. His soft words sent a shiver through her whole body. “You’re the best birthday present I ever received. Tell me you’ll stay with me for tonight’s birthday—and all the rest?” What was he asking of her? “I…I’ll stay as long as you want me.” “I’ll want you all my life.”

Chapter Three Jesa stood in her hotel room. Morning sun reflected off the glass chandelier overhead, throwing beautiful prisms everywhere. She rubbed blurry, tired eyes that hadn’t slept a wink. There blinked an email message from Madame Eve on her cell phone. “Good morning, Jesa. How was your evening?” “Wonderful, the most wonderful one of my life,” her practiced fingers typed in reply. The response came back quickly. “I’m delighted to hear that. I’m always looking out for the best interests of my clients. You and David will be very happy together. I’m sure Madelyn will be delighted as well. Do keep me posted, my girl. I adore happy endings. Good-bye and thank you for being so delightful.” She stared at the phone in wonder. Had the woman known all along? Shrugging, she put the phone in her purse. The truth didn’t really matter. Picking up her bag, she turned, hearing a slight rap on the door. Smiling, she opened it. “Ready.” David held out his hand and she took it. Jesa adored happy endings, too.
