Berkshire’s Commitment to Doing Business Sustainably
/
ne of the questions we at Berkshire Publishing constantly ask ourselves is how we can run our business in a way that will help preserve and even restore the planet. As a book publisher, especially one with the ten-volume Encyclopedia of Sustainability on our list (see http://www.thesustainabilityproject.com), choosing a “green” print house like Thomson-Shore is an obvious first step. The second is requesting an Eco-Audit sponsored by the Green Press Initiative, a nonprofit organization with a mission to help those in the publishing industry conserve natural resources. The carbon footprint of publishing is not caused just by printing books on paper—the supply chain and shipping method by which the books get to the customer, for instance, make a substantial contribution to it. But of all
of the ways to use paper, producing books is one of the smartest—because books last. Producing works with a long shelf life, which is a matter of both the paper we print on and the words on the page, is an important sustainability concept Berkshire is proud to believe in and practice. Of course all the work it takes to get a book into print has an environmental impact, including the virtually paperless editorial processes that many sustainability-savvy publishers (Berkshire included) have been gradually adopting. Although many believe that the trend to switch more and more to the electronic world is a planet-friendly move, reading and publishing online are not a carbon-free activities. Turn to the Encyclopedia of Sustainability and http:// www.thesustainabilityproject.com for details, and for information about Berkshire’s China Green publications.
