Dating Season by Shelli Stevens
Chapter One Someone was watching Jada Lassiter. His gaze seared her back. Even without turning to look across the crowded lounge, she sensed he was a shifter like her. “Here, I want you to look at this picture.” She nodded and accepted the file her brother Cole slid across the table. The urge to glance around and locate the other shifter was strong, but she stomped it down. Instead, she sniffed the air. His aroused masculine scent was easy to distinguish from the alcohol, food, and sweat. Attention from males, whether human or shifter, wasn’t uncommon for her. She was an attractive woman, both in human and shifter form. But she’d never been so aware of being watched—or been so affected by the presence of another shifter. Curiosity got the better of her. She had to look. In a maneuver she’d perfected from many years of flirting, she tossed her hair over one shoulder and tilted her head, scanning the room. The resort was a palatial wooden lodge, with a rustic look that made it feel homey and natural, fitting into its woodland surroundings. The lounge was elegant, but less formal with live music and pool tables. Her gaze moved around the room before locking on a man in the corner. His body was long and muscled, coiled into one of the lounge chairs as if he could unfurl at any moment. His skin had an olive tone and his hair was black.

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens His dark eyes narrowed on her with steady intent. His mouth curled into a predatory smile when he realized he had her attention. A heated tremor swept through her —her nipples tightened almost painfully. A werejaguar. His features gave it away. Very interesting. They were a rare breed, and she’d never been to bed with one. Hmm. Maybe she was destined to have a bit of fun this weekend. Let the games begin. She raised an eyebrow, running her tongue across her upper lip. “...armed and dangerous.” Cole rapped his knuckles on the table. “Hey, are you listening to me, Jed? This stuff is important.” Jada spun back to face her brother. Flirting would have to wait. “I’m listening. And how many times do I have to ask you not to call me Jed? It makes me sound like a guy.” She forced her attention back down to the file, scowling as her brother laughed at her annoyance. The greasy looking blond in the picture was the exact opposite of the gorgeous werejaguar across the room. Her nose crinkled in distaste. The next photo showed the man as a scrawny wolf with the same bloodshot blue eyes. “Kenny Wilson. What about him? He’s dead, right?” Three weeks ago Jada had spotted him going into the woods with one of the maids. A couple hours later the maid was found barely alive. She’d been raped and viciously assaulted, then left to die in the woods. Fortunately Jada had come across her and gotten her medical help. The maid had recovered, but quit the resort to go home and live with her family. Everyone at Still Waters was still shaken and shocked by the crime. Jada’s testimony in front of a panel of shifters had led to his death sentence. “He’s not dead, Jada.” Cole’s expression turned grim. “See, you weren’t listening a few minutes ago. He escaped before they could execute him. Last reports were that he attacked a family in Northern California and is heading our way.”
6
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens Cold fear stabbed through her, but she forced a smile. “Well, shit. Should I set another plate for dinner?” “Jada, this is serious. He could come after you.” “I know.” She sighed and handed back the file, wishing her hand wasn’t shaking. “I’ll be on my guard.” Cole was good at what he did. As head of security, he kept a tight reign on the Still Waters resort. The maid’s assault was the only violent crime on record. “You’d better.” Her brother stood up, sliding the folder under his arm. “So, you’ve got a pissed off looking jaguar in the corner checking you out. Do you realize that?” “Yes, I know. And I’m actually kind of excited about it.” “Do you want me to tell him to get lost?” “Hmm. Did you miss that part where I said I was excited about it? I can handle this, Cole.” He scowled. “I don’t know. The guy looks as if he’d like to take a swing at me.” “He probably would.” She stood on her tiptoes, hugging her brother and giving him a swift kiss on the cheek. The jaguar’s low angry growl carried across the room. The hairs on the back of her neck lifted and she closed her eyes for a moment. Ah, so he was possessive. Already. And he hadn’t even claimed her yet. But then, the night was young. They’d find out later who would do the actual claiming. Cole sighed. “Behave yourself, Jada.” “Now why would I do that? Good girls are so boring.” She winked at her brother and then turned to face the jaguar. He remained in the chair, making no move to stand as she approached. Her pulse was off the charts when she finally sat down in the seat across from him, though she fought to appear unaffected by his presence. “I don’t believe we’ve been introduced. I’m Jada. I’m the riding instructor here at Still Waters.” She reached out a hand for him to shake. “Do you ride, Mr...?”
7
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens He didn’t acknowledge her hand or the question, just stared at her with that same stripping‐you‐naked expression. Her face warmed with embarrassment and she drew her hand back to her lap. “Tell me something, Jada.” The sound of his voice, deep and rough, rattled her and sent cream straight into her panties. “Why did you kiss that man when you knew I was watching you?” Her jaw dropped a little. She snapped it shut and then managed to force out a light laugh instead. Possessive for sure. She could go easy on him and explain Cole was her brother. But that would take the fun out of things. “Hmm. Why don’t you tell me? Why is it any of your concern who I kiss?” She sat back in her chair, allowing her tank top to pull away from her jeans and leave a patch of skin bare. The warm air in the room tickled her belly button. His gaze dropped to her toned stomach. Good. She liked to have the upper hand. “It’s my concern, because I intend to have you in my bed tonight. And I don’t share my women.” So much for having the upper hand. Her smile widened. He was going to keep her on her toes tonight. “Now, really.” She glanced at him from under her lashes and leaned back in the chair. “What makes you think I’ll go to bed with you? You haven’t properly introduced yourself. Haven’t offered to buy me a drink. Hell, you haven’t even cracked a smile.” She shrugged and lifted an eyebrow. “Not that the whole brooding thing you’ve got going on isn’t sexy, but still. I’m old fashioned.” “I doubt that,” he murmured, and she gave in inward yell of triumph as his lips twitched into a smile. “What would you like to drink, Jada?” “I’ll have a Corona. With lime, please.” He unfurled from the chair. Yes, he was very tall. She watched him stride smoothly to the bar. And, Lord, those shoulders...so wide and muscled.
8
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens Who was this man? She drew her lip between her teeth and studied him with unabashed curiosity. Cole hadn’t seemed to recognize him either. And usually they were familiar with all the guests at the resort. He returned a moment later with her beer, carrying one for himself as well. “My name’s Antonio.” She accepted her drink and tilted the bottle back, taking a sip. “Thank you, Antonio. But you didn’t have to pay for my drink. As part owner of this resort I get them for free.” His eyes narrowed and he leaned forward. “You’re part owner of Still Waters?” “Yes, I am.” “This resort is owned by the Lassiter family.” His gaze darkened, his jaw went tight. “Are you married to one of the three brothers?” She threw back her head and laughed. “I’m a Lassiter by blood, not marriage. My brothers and I own the resort jointly.” The tension in his body visibly eased, and the predatory smile returned as his glance rested on her exposed stomach once more. “I wasn’t aware you had returned from Florida.” Jada sat up straighter. Warning bells rang in her head. “How did you know I was in Florida?” He shrugged. “I read it somewhere. That you and the oldest Lassiter brother had skipped town to bask in the sun.” Her eyes narrowed. She thought about setting him right, explaining that attending four years of college was hardly basking in the sun, and then decided against it. “Tell me, Antonio. What do you do?” There was a brief pause. “I’m a banker.” “A banker?” A banker was good, since she refused to date men who put their lives on the line. The thought of her best friend sent a familiar ache of sadness through her. “You look disappointed by my answer.”
9
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Not at all.” She looked down and gave a brief smile. “Relieved, actually. So, you never did answer my question. Do you like to ride, Antonio?” “I do.” He took a swig of beer, and she watched the corded muscles in his throat flex as he swallowed. He lowered the beer and met her gaze, a wicked smile on his lips. “Although I prefer to be ridden.” Oh, this man was lethal. Tingles moved up her body and the dampness in her panties increased. The thought of sitting astride him, riding his cock, flickered through her mind and she gave a tight smile. “Don’t we all, Tony?” His gaze darkened, and he reached out and stroked her hand. “Run with me, Jada.” Her breath locked in her throat, and she bit back a moan when he traced his thumb over the inside of her wrist. “I‐I never shift with someone on a first date,” she replied and then blushed stupidly. What was happening to her? She was usually the queen of flirting, a grown woman who knew what she wanted and how to get it. Antonio had reduced her to a tongue‐tied, lust stricken girl. “Ah, but are we really on a date?” The blush deepened and she stood up so fast she nearly knocked the chair over. “I have work to do, so I should really be going. Thank you, Antonio. I hope you enjoy your stay here at the Still Waters resort.” “Jada.” He stood up. “Don’t run out on me.” “Thank you for the beer,” she called over her shoulder and kept walking. His growl announced his displeasure and she smiled, increasing her pace. Well, at least she’d regained the upper hand. Though she doubted she’d keep it for long.

Chapter Two Antonio closed his laptop and leaned back against the plush pillows on the bed. He glanced around the luxury suite and grunted with approval. His job took him all over the world —to all standards of hotels —but the Lassiters’ resort took the cake. Though rustic and quaint in appearance, it offered all the luxuries of any high class hotel. Most humans were ignorant to the existence of werecreatures, let alone to the fact that there were five star resorts that catered to them. He should have been thoroughly enjoying his evening. He was closing in on his subject, had the rest of the night off, and there was a stocked bar in the room. His belly was full from a gourmet dinner worthy of royalty. He ought to be ready for a damn good sleep, on a bed that probably cost more than his apartment rent back in San Diego. But he wasn’t. The image of that cock‐teasing wereleopard was engraved in his head. And his dick had been chronically hard ever since her sweet ass had sashayed out of the lounge earlier in the afternoon. Jada Lassiter. In his research on the Lassiter family, he’d always assumed the one daughter of the family had moved to Florida. But no...she was very much here, and active in the Still Waters Resort. Yes, Jada was a woman who could keep his bed warm at nights. But she could prove to be an unexpected complication during his hunt for Kenny Wilson.
11
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens Guilt stabbed low in his gut. He lied all the time about what he did for a living. As a bounty hunter it was imperative to keep a low profile. And when the shifter community had hired him to track Kenny Wilson, he’d known it wouldn’t be any different. But somehow, lying to Jada seemed a mistake. He feared it would come back to bite him in the ass. She’ll be in your bed, and then you’ll be gone again. That was the routine. Another criminal. Another city. And it usually didn’t bother him. The guilt he was experiencing now was new. He didn’t like it. It complicated things. He closed his eyes and envisioned the petite, curvaceous woman with the tawny hair. How was it possible for such a tiny woman to have such large breasts and wonderfully curved hips? Those golden eyes all but promised she was good in bed. His dick ached to life under his jeans. Thrusting a hand through his hair he shook his head grimly. It was no use. He wouldn’t be going to sleep anytime soon. There were two alternative—jack off or go for a run. Cursing, he climbed off the bed and went to look out the window. The resort was situated on a vast amount of land. Lush forest rose to the east, and the Pacific Ocean and its sandy beaches stretched to the west. He’d rented one of the cabins, and the beach was literally right outside his patio door. Turning away from the window he pulled off his shirt and then removed his jeans and boxers. Naked, he opened his sliding glass door and stepped outside. His erection subsided when the chill breeze hit his body. Taking a deep breath, he set off into a run. His feet pounded the sand as the transformation began. He heard the familiar popping and stretching sounds as his body shifted into a jaguar. The smells and sights around him became crisper, move vivid. The blood moved faster through his body and his pace increased. His paws slapped across the earth as he circled north around the resort passing other shifters. Wolves, bears, and even birds were out enjoying the night. But the deeper into the dense growth he went, the less contact he had with anyone.
12
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens His frustrations eased, and the thrill of the run became his only focus, giving him the familiar rush and high. He considered turning back. Instead he paused and then slowed to a stop. She was here. Purring at his turn of luck, he followed her scent, tracking her stealthily. * * * * * Jada’s tongue lolled as she neared the end of her run. Arriving at her favorite spot, she slowed to a walk, her paws making the leaves crinkle under her feet as she approached the lake. Her body began to shift as she reached the water’s edge. A moment later she was naked in human form, wading through the cool lake. God she’d missed coming here. It was simply too cold to go swimming in the winter. Even now, she might be considered crazy to want to take a dip. But they were having an extra warm spring and her body was overheated. For many reasons. She scowled. Damn, that man had gotten under her skin. Antonio. Never had this type of chemistry happened so fast, come on so strong. She’d gone for a run tonight as an excuse to rid him from her mind, to distract herself. Fat lot of good that had done. Rolling her eyes, she dove under water. When she surfaced, goose bumps covered her flesh. She froze and sniffed the air. She wasn’t alone. Her gaze darted to the dense grove of trees that lined the lake. Oh God. Had he followed her? Crossing her arms over her breasts, she sank down in the water. “Go away! You had no right to follow me.” She scanned the trees, wondering where he was. Then she saw him, the yellow of his eyes, just before he padded out of the forest. She inhaled sharply. And she’d thought him formidable in human form? As a jaguar he was beautiful, massive, and extremely intimidating.
13
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens He approached the edge of the lake, his body shifting with each step. She watched the fur retract and his large shoulders appear. Her gaze moved down the rigid outline of muscles on his stomach, and then lower. Swallowing hard, she could barely stop her jaw from dropping. His cock was long and thick, and he was only half erect. Heat stirred in her body and her nipples tightened under her arms. “This is my spot. You have no right to intrude.” She knew she sounded childish, but with him wading toward her —all human male with a purpose —she went into full‐fledged panic mode. “I didn’t come out tonight with the intention of following you. But when I caught your scent I had no choice.” He shrugged and then dove under the water, swimming in powerful strides toward her. The urge to flee hit so hard she found herself swimming further away to put some distance between them. She cried out when he grabbed her around the waist with one arm, pulling her back through the water. “Jada.” His hot breath tickled the nape of her neck just before he pressed a kiss to the sensitive skin. “I thought I told you not to run from me. That’s twice now you’ve tried to get away from me.” “Shouldn’t that be a clue that I’m not interested?” She’d meant it to come out witty and flirtatious, but it sounded strangled. Treading water, he moved one of his hands over her stomach and up her ribcage. “You’re interested, Jada.” His fingers danced on the underside of her breast, which ached for his touch. “I bet if I touched your nipples right now they’d be tight and sensitive.” She gritted her teeth. “Don’t tell me I’m going to have to explain the whole cold water, hard nipples theory to you. I’m not interested.” He moved his finger over her breast to the tip, and she gasped, closing her eyes. Damn my body for being so responsive to him! He captured the peak between two fingers and squeezed. “Somehow I doubt they’re hard because of the cold.” He laughed and released her nipple, moving his hand back down her belly. “Or, maybe I’ll check elsewhere to see how not interested you are.” She realized his intent too late as his fingers slipped between her legs to rub her pussy. She squeezed her legs together to stop him, and her

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens body immediately began to sink in the water. His grip tightened around her and he lifted her, supporting them both as he tread water. “Open your legs, Jada,” he murmured in her ear. His tongue stroked over the sensitive lobe and she bucked against him. “Let me feel how wet you are for me.” His fingers moved back and forth over her folds, and she knew he could have penetrated her whether her legs were open or not. But he was waiting for her permission. “Open for me, baby.” Oh, hell. It felt too good to keep them closed. Groaning, she relaxed her legs, letting them float easily in the water. His finger slipped inside her cunt and she nearly choked at the sensation. “Not interested, hmm? Fuck, you sure are hot and creamy for someone not interested.” She could feel his dick pressing firm up against her ass. He kissed her shoulder again, while inserting a second finger inside her, thrusting in and out. Jada groaned, letting her head fall back against his shoulder. “Let’s go to shore.” He swam with one arm, moving them out of the deep water and toward the lake’s edge.

Chapter Three When her feet hit shallow water he was already lifting her, and she wrapped her arms around his waist. Raising her head, she opened her mouth to his demanding kiss. His tongue plunged past her lips, finding hers and stroking it. She groaned as his fingers dug into her ass cheeks, pulling her tighter against him. The coarse hair on his stomach pressed into her smooth pussy lips. “Shit, why do I want you so bad?” He groaned and lowered her onto the sand, his body moving on top of hers. “What the hell are you doing to me?” “Nothing yet.” She gave a breathy laugh as her hand wrapped around his thick cock. “But that can be remedied.” “Jada.” His eyes closed and she heard the air hiss out from between his teeth. “Hold on, baby.” He scooted down her body, and then his breath was hot on her thighs. “The scent of your desire has been driving me crazy all day.” His fingers slipped inside her cunt again and she shuddered. “Your hot cream that’s all for me.” His tongue flicked her clit and her hips rose off the sand. “Christ, you taste better than I imagined.” His tongue circled her clit again before moving down and thrusting inside her channel.
16
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Antonio!” She cried out and threaded her fingers into his hair. She held his head against her, while her hips lifted and fell to the confident strokes of his tongue. Again and again his wet tongue moved in and out of her cunt. Two talented fingers worked her clit, rubbing and pinching. She watched him eating her pussy and the delicious tension inside her grew. Her head fall back in the sand and she stared up at the stars, groaning as his mouth replaced his fingers. He sucked her clit, bit it lightly, and then soothed it. He repeated the torture, and then started finger fucking her again. “Oh...yes...oh God!” The stars spun above her as the vortex of sensation exploded. She ground her pussy into his mouth, her body shaking trough the intensity of the orgasm. The trembling continued as he moved up her body to cover her. “Taste yourself. Taste how sweet you are.” His mouth crushed down on hers, and their teeth crashed together before his tongue slid deep. She could feel his cock probing the fold of her pussy and he pushed her knees apart, settling himself between her thighs. The head of his cock sank slowly inside her, and then her body stretched to accept his thick length. “Antonio...” She moaned, her nails raking down his back. “Oh, God, you feel so good.” His answering groan corresponded with the frantic thrust all the way inside her. The head of his cock nestled again her womb, and every inch of her body tingled with pleasure. He didn’t move for a moment, and Jada watched his face. Saw the control he fought to hold in check. She touched his cheek. “Fuck me, Tony. Fuck me like you wanted to the moment you saw me in the lounge.” He growled and raised himself above her with his arms on each side of her shoulders. Pulling his cock out inch by inch, he moved back inside, making shallow, quick thrusts. His head dipped to her breast, his lips wrapping around her nipple and drawing it into his mouth.
17
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens She whimpered, squirming under him. His thrusts grew faster as he pulled further out and then slammed in harder. Antonio’s teeth closed over her nipple and bit down. She cried out and her nails pierced the skin on his back. “Ah, you like that?” He grabbed both her wrists in one hand, pinning her hands above her head so she was helpless. He flexed his hips and looked down where their bodies were joined. “Baby, you’ve got a body I could fuck all night.” He pushed deep and his cock moved against the sensitive spot inside her. Her body shuddered under him. “And your breasts were made to be sucked on. Just for me.” He licked a nipple again. “You’re whole body is like damn candy.” “Please...Antonio,” she begged breathlessly, struggling against him. “What do you want?” His thrusts quickened. “Do you want me to go faster?” “Yes.” She gasped and clenched her pussy around him. “Christ,” he hissed. “Baby, that feels good.” “Harder.” “Like this?” He slammed harder into her, his hips spreading her legs wider and bruising her inner thighs. “Yes.” The pleasure spiraled high again and she tugged on her wrists, but he still didn’t release them. “Make me come.” “Yes. Come for me, Jada.” He fucked her in a steady hard rhythm, grinding his pelvis so it connected with her clit. The second orgasm ripped through her and she screamed, her inner muscles squeezing around his cock. Antonio quickened his pace and then plunged deep, staying imbedded against her womb. He groaned and she could feel his cum spilling hot and thick inside her. “Baby, oh God.” He released her wrists and fell on top of her. She wrapped her arms around his back, pulling him tighter against her body as he nuzzled her neck and rained kisses on the tops of her breast.
18
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens Wow. That had to have been the best sex, hands down, she’d ever had. Her heart was pounding a mile a minute, the scent of their sweat slick bodies and arousal was the most amazing aphrodisiac. She wanted him again, and he was still inside her. The urge to bite his shoulder came on strong and she lowered her head to do it and then paused. What am I doing? If I do that I’m choosing him as my mate. Am I nuts? I don’t even know him! She dropped her head back into the sand and stared back up at the stars. This whole night had been crazy. “I’m glad we both decided to go run tonight.” He raised his head from her breast and looked down at her with a sexy grin. “Even if you wouldn’t run with me earlier.” She gave a small smile. “Like I said, I never shift on the first date.” “So this is a date then?” His chest rumbled with laughter against her. “Will you run with me back to the lodge?” Hell, the damage was done. She’d already slept with him. Why not have a little fun? Besides, it would be a kick to see who could run faster in their shifter form. “I will. But why don’t we swim again? We reek of sex.” She pushed against his shoulders, urging him off her. “You don’t like my scent on you?” He raised an eyebrow, but still moved off of her. She took the hand he offered to help her up. “I love the scent of you on me. But I have overprotective brothers who would probably kick your ass if they smelled it.” She flashed him a grin before running back to the lake. “Coming, Tony?” “Coming?” He grinned. “Freudian slip?” “No.” She gave a throaty laugh. “I say what I mean and mean what I say. Now get your ass in here, sexy.” He growled and charged into the water after her, wrapping his arms around her waist and tackling her. They both went under, legs and arms intertwined. Surfacing again, she giggled as he pulled her tight against him. They were still in shallow water and had their footing. He ran his hands down her back and squeezed her ass.
19
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Thank you for this evening, baby.” He lowered his mouth to hers and initiated another slow, deep kiss. Her legs threatened to buckle. He stiffened, pulling back suddenly. “What? What’s wro —” “Shh.” He looked toward shore and the forest beyond. She went still and sniffed the air. Her eyes widened and she sank down in the water to cover her naked body. Someone was out there watching them.

Chapter Four “Stay here.” Antonio moved quickly out of the water, and then roared as he moved into a run. Jada watched the sleek, wet muscles in his body begin to shift into his jaguar form as he tore off into the woods. Her heart pounded with uncertainty and fear. The scent she’d picked up had been rancid. Pure evil. And Antonio had just put himself directly in its path. “Stay here my ass.” She waded out of the water and then took off toward the woods, letting herself shift. Her bones popped and stretched as fur spread over her body. Soon the transition was complete and she was running through the forest, tracking Antonio’s scent. Branches and leaves crackled under her paws as she weaved among the trees. His trail went cold and she slowed down, looking around in confusion. The cloying, rancid scent returned and she tensed, looking around and hissing in warning. Wilson was here. Anger speared through her again. How dare he anyway? Come out, asshole, and show yourself. A twig snapped and she looked up. Anger and fear formed a potent combination in her belly. Kenny looked mostly the same as he had when she’d testified against him almost a month ago. Greasy blond hair, bloodshot blue eyes.
21
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens He began to shift, leaving behind his human self and transitioning into his wolf form, stalking her slowly. He wanted to fight? Bring it on. She growled and launched herself at his throat, managing a shallow slash with her claws before he knocked her backward. He fell on top of her, his jaws wide as his teeth snapped toward her neck. She pulled back, but not before he got a small bite in. Ignoring the sting of pain, she rolled out from under him and backed up. He leapt at her again, but she was ready for him this time. She swiped at him with her sharp claws, catching him across the muzzle and drawing blood. His growl of rage echoed through the forest as she fought to stay on top of him. His teeth pierced her shoulder, sinking deep until he hit bone. Pain speared through her body, but she ignored it and dug her claws into his side. He howled and leapt away, then circled back, his teeth snapping. Fur flew as he caught her hind leg, ripping a long gash that took her breath away. She hissed and turned around, jumping at him and catching him in the side with her claws. Adrenaline hit hard as she watched the three lines of blood appear. He backed away from her again and growled. She could see the pain in his eyes, and knew it mirrored hers. As they circled each other Jada took the moment to catch her breath. A little help would be good. Where the hell was Antonio? * * * * * Fuck. She wasn’t at the lake. Damn it all, where the hell had she gone? Antonio turned and charged back into the forest, fear for her safety making him increase his pace. Kenny’s trail had split in two directions, and by the time he’d explored one, his concern over leaving Jada alone had increased. With good reason apparently.
22
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens His paws slapped the dirt floor of the woods as he charged between the trees. Her scent hit him the same moment Kenny’s did. The smell of blood overpowered them both. His gut tightened into a knot of dread, and he cursed inwardly as he followed the trail. He’d known the moment he’d picked up the other man’s scent in the lake that it was the criminal he was hunting. If he’d hurt Jada the man would die a slow, painful death. He broke into a clearing and saw a wolf launch itself at a leopard. Wilson fell on top of Jada, teeth snapping and fur flying. Antonio lurched forward with a roar, landing on the wolf and rolling him away from Jada. His jaws flexed and he caught the wolf in the neck, a small and nowhere near fatal bite. The wolf scrambled out from under him and howled in frustration, then turned and fled into the forest. Antonio started to follow and then hesitated. God, he wanted to chase the wolf, but one glance at Jada drew him to an immediate halt. He shifted back into human form and knelt at her side. She stared up at him, panting heavily on the ground, and he could see she was in pain. “Shift back, baby. I’ll carry you back to the lodge.” Apparently she didn’t like the idea. She growled and attempted to stand on her own. “Shift back,” he ordered again. “Damn it, Jada. This isn’t the time to prove your strength.” She gave a low growl when he reached for her. Wobbling, she made it up on all four legs, took a few steps, and then collapsed. He waited, knowing she would shift back now. Her fur retracted and the transition began. A moment later she was lying naked on the dirt floor of the forest. Christ. It was worse than he’d thought. In human form she was covered with bruises and deep gashes that oozed blood. “It’s looks worse than it is,” she muttered through clenched teeth and looked away from him.
23
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens He traced the angry flesh of the jagged wound on her thigh. The one on her shoulder was just as bad. “Why didn’t you wait at the lake, Jada?” He slipped his arms under her petite body and lifted her high against his chest. “Because I didn’t want you out there fighting him alone.” She was shaking now, her body curving against his chest. “So you did it instead.” He shook his head. “You have got to be the craziest or bravest woman I know.” She gave him a weak smile. “Thank you.” “I’m not sure that was a compliment, baby.” “It was...” Her eyelids fluttered closed and she became a dead weight in his arms. She’d passed out cold. He frowned and increased his pace. It would take longer to carry her in human form, but he couldn’t do it as a jaguar. Twenty minutes later he entered the resort. It was late in the evening, and the building was quiet. He headed straight for the concierge desk to ask about locating a doctor. “What the hell is going on?” Antonio turned at the sound of Aidan Lassiter’s voice. The look of rage on the resort executive’s face warned Antonio that this wasn’t going to be pleasant. “Your sister’s been hurt. You should have her checked out.” The man’s jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed. “You better have a good fucking story, buddy.” He jerked his head. “Bring her into my office and lay her down on the couch.” Antonio carried her unconscious body into the office. He lowered her gently onto the leather couch and knelt beside her, pushing a strand of hair out of her eyes. Aidan dialed a number on the phone, his furious glare locked with Antonio’s. “Cole, get your ass down here and bring the resort doctor. Jada’s been hurt.” He replaced the receiver and went straight to the couch. Tension speared through Antonio’s body as he watched Jada’s brother check her wound and squeeze her hand gently.

Cole appeared in the doorway, breathing hard as his gaze went straight to the couch. “Ah, Jed.” He groaned, moving toward her and then freezing when he realized Antonio was in the room. “You. Did you do this to her?” “You know this guy?” Aidan demanded, going to stand next to his brother. They lined up in front of Jada, blocking her like two massive protectors. “I don’t know him.” Cole’s voice was like ice. “But I saw him in the lounge earlier. He couldn’t keep his eyes off of Jada.” “Is that so?” Aidan’s expression turned grim and he stepped forward until he was toe to toe with Antonio. “You’d better start talking, asshole. Your scent is all over her.”

Chapter Five Antonio pushed back his anger. They’re just protective, Jada warned you about this. “My name is Antonio Grant. I didn’t do this to your sister. Jada was attacked in the forest. She held her own until I found her.” “Who attacked her?” Aidan asked, though both brothers looked suspicious. “His name is Kenny Wilson. He’s a shifter I’ve been tracking. I’m a bounty hunter.” “Kenny Wilson?” Cole’s mouth tightened, rage flashed in his gaze. “Did you catch him?” “No,” Antonio replied with a shake of his head. “I could tell she was hurt. And it was either go after Kenny or get Jada the help she needed.” There was a knock on the door, and everyone turned to face the doctor. The older man nodded and stepped into the room. “Has our little Jada gotten herself into a bit of trouble again?” he asked in a soft British accent. He gave a small smile and looked around at each of the men. He must have sensed the tension in the room, because he cleared his throat and turned his attention back to Jada. “Well now, let’s have a look.” Slipping on latex gloves, he prodded the flesh around the wound on her thigh, muttering under his breath. “Hmm. The wounds need to be cleansed, but they should heal up nicely.” He stood up and yanked off the

Perhaps you’d all like to continue your discussion in the bar while I tend to her?” “I’ll stay,” Antonio said. Cole laughed. “Like hell you will. Let’s go to the bar and have a little chat, bounty hunter. Aidan will stay with her.” Antonio wanted to argue, but the last thing he needed was for Jada to wake up to a vicious argument. He nodded and followed Cole into the bar. The lounge was deserted, and they chose a table and sat down across from one another. Antonio braced himself for Cole’s anger. “We’ve seen Kenny Wilson around here before,” Cole said instead. “He’s got good reason to hold a grudge against us —Jada in particular. Her testimony sentenced him to die.” Antonio kept a straight face, and gave a stoic nod. This wasn’t news to him. He’d known about that the minute he’d read Wilson’s file. I should have seen this coming. Guilt gnawed at his gut, but he pushed it aside. “How good are you at tracking criminals?” “I’m damn good. I’ve been bounty hunting since I turned eighteen. I tracked down Snake‐eyed John when I was twenty‐two. Freddie Daniels a few years back,” he said, mentioning two of the most high profile cases he’d helped solve. Cole was quiet for a moment. “I’m head of security here at the resort. And I don’t mind your help so long as we catch this guy.” Antonio gave a brief nod. Cole ran a hand through his hair and shook his head. “I just wonder if the guy is gonna run. Now that he knows we’re onto him.” Antonio considered the possibility for a moment. “Anyone smart would get as far away as possible. Maybe head for the Canadian border.” He paused. “But I get the feeling that if he was dumb enough to go after Jada so blatantly...he’s gonna try again.” “I was thinking the same thing.” Cole nodded and stood up. “Thank you. For being there for my sister when she was attacked.”

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “No problem. I’m sure you’d do the same.” Cole’s gaze narrowed. “By the way. You hurt her, and you’ll answer to me.” * * * * * Jada blinked her eyes open and looked around her room. Memories of what had happened last night surfaced and a shudder ran through her body. Groggy from the sleeping pill the doctor had given her, she glanced at the clock. It was the middle of the night, but she wanted Antonio. Now. Reaching for the phone, she dialed the concierge. “Hey, Eva, can you connect me with a guest named Antonio? I’m sorry, I don’t have his last name.” A few seconds later she was transferred to his room. Her breath locked in her throat while she waited for him to pick up. “Answer, please answer.” “This is Antonio.” His voice seemed groggy, as though she’d woken him. “Tony...” “Jada?” He sounded more alert, like he’d just sat up in bed. “What is it? Are you in trouble?” She hesitated. “Will you come to me? I’m in cottage fourteen.” “Jada...” “Please, Antonio. I need to see you.” He was quiet for a moment. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.” Jada replaced the receiver and gingerly climbed out of bed. She shrugged her shoulder, testing for pain and then glanced down at her leg. Her wounds weren’t as bad now that they’d been cleansed, bandaged and taped. She limped to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. The knock on her door came just as she was getting ready to change. She scowled. So much for throwing on something sexy. Boxer

She limped to the door, peeked through the hole, and then swung it open. The sight of him took her breath away. His muscled body leaned against the door frame, and his gaze moved over her like he couldn’t wait to touch her. The air crackled between them. He straightened and came in through the open door. “You should be in bed, not walking around.” She grinned and shut the door, watching his butt as he moved past her. “I’ve got great pain meds. I can’t feel a thing. Not too mention I’m more than half healed.” “Is that so?” He turned around and slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her into his embrace. “Can you feel this?” His mouth lowered to hers, and she parted her lips on a sigh. His tongue slipped inside and brushed against hers. Once, twice, before he deepened the kiss and her panties grew damp with desire. She drew back. “Make love to me, Antonio. Please. I need you tonight.”

Chapter Six Antonio bit back a groan and pushed a strand of hair out of Jada’s eyes. Her vulnerable gaze made him want to sweep her into his arms and carry her to bed. But what kind of asshole would he be if he made love to her when she was hurt? “You’re thinking about it too much.” She buried her head against his chest, wrapping her arms tighter around him. “Please, Tony. I haven’t been able to get what happened between us out of my head.” “Even when you were fighting?” he teased. “Okay, you’re right. There was that whole fighting and passing out part where you weren’t the center of my thoughts. But as soon as I got drugs, it was all about Antonio!” He laughed and moved his hands in a slow caress up her back. “Really now?” “Yes, really. Hey, are you Latino? Your name and features seem to indicate it, but I can’t be sure.” “My mother is. She came to America from Puerto Rico and married my father.” “Ah, see, that’s another reason I like you so much. I’ve got a thing for Latin men.” She lifted herself onto her tiptoes and kissed his chin. “Half Latin.” He groaned as her tongue swept over the pulse on his throat. “Jada...” “Antonio, let’s make love.” She pulled out of his arms and limped back to the bed. “Don’t you feel it? This connection we seem to have?”
30
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Yes.” He felt it, and it scared the shit out of him. “But, baby, we shouldn’t.” He hesitated. “You’ve got injuries that need to heal. We could rip open those wounds again if we get too wild.” “So...we’ll work around it.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “We don’t have to go all the way. There are other things we could do.” She pulled off her tank top and her perfectly round tits bobbed enticingly in front of his face. The nipples, puckered and pink, made him want to lick them and draw them into his mouth. “Other things?” His will power melted and he stepped toward the bed. He wouldn’t make love to her, but he would bring her pleasure. She reached for him, unzipping the fly of his slacks and pushing them down to his knees. He helped her, kicking off his shoes and pants, and then removing his briefs. “You have the most enormous cock.” She leaned forward, wrapping her silky fingers around it. “I wonder how well you’ll fit in my mouth.” His breath came out choked as her tongue rubbed against the head of dick. Her hair fell over her shoulder, the soft strands tickling his thighs. “Mmm, I like the taste of you.” Her tongue flicked out again, swiping up the drop of pre‐cum that had beaded on the tip. He groaned and thrust his fingers into her hair, holding her head against his cock. Her laugh vibrated against him and her hot breath moved over his length. Her lips wrapped around the head, and then she drew him into her mouth and down her throat. His grip in her hair tightened, and he started moving his hips, thrusting his dick in and out of her sweet mouth. She flicked her tongue over his head when he moved out past her lips, then nearly swallowed him whole when he thrust back in to touch her throat. Releasing her hair, he moved his hands down to cup her breasts. They filled his hands and then some. He swiped his thumbs across both of the erect tips and she moaned. The sound trembled against his cock.
31
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens She found his sac and massaged, continuing to suck him off, moving her mouth faster. Pleasure speared through every nerve in his body, and he pinched her nipples while thrusting harder into her mouth. Christ he was going to lose it. “Jada, baby, enough.” She didn’t listen, instead brought him closer to the point of no return. He groaned and fell over the edge. His balls tightened and he came hard in her mouth. She swallowed, sucking every last drop of semen from his cock. He closed his eyes, his legs shaking as he stroked the back of her neck. She kissed the head of his cock one last time before releasing him. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself.” She looked up at him and gave a husky laugh, licking her lips. “Yeah? Well, neither can I.” He pushed on her shoulders, gently easing her onto her back on the mattress. Leaning over her, he closed his mouth over one of her breasts and sucked the nipple deep. Her frantic cry made him suck harder while he slid a hand down her belly and into her shorts. He pushed two fingers inside her pussy, and groaned at how creamy she was. He fucked her with his fingers, pushing deep, then harder and faster, sucking rhythmically on her nipple as she squirmed under him. She gave a long, throaty moan and he switched to the other nipple, biting down lightly then moving his thumb up to strum her clit. “Antonio...” She pushed at his head, and he laughed softly, knowing what she wanted. Sliding off the bed, he knelt in front of her and pulled her shorts off her body. Leaning down again, he gently parted her thighs, careful not to touch her wound. He lowered his head, licking her sweet pussy, before moving up and flicking his tongue over her clit. Her hips lifted off the bed and he pushed them back down, spurred on by her screams of pleasure. He cupped her ass, bringing her pussy

Her cream was slick on his tongue and he pushed deeper, loving the taste of her and wanting more, squeezing her ass cheeks as he ate her. “Oh...Antonio.” Her cry turned to a gasp when he swept his tongue up to flick her clit again. He alternated flicking and sucking it, and then pushed two fingers inside her. Moving them in and out, filling the room with the wet sounds, bringing her closer to an orgasm. Her stomach began to tremble, and her cries grew higher and more frantic. He drew his teeth across her clit and she came with a scream. Her juices spilled onto his tongue as she peaked, her thighs tightened around his head. He kept stroking his tongue over her, into her, following her through the entire orgasm. Her body went limp, her thighs trembling as they relaxed around his head. He pulled away, cupping her pussy and rubbing it gently as he slid up her body. “You’re beautiful when you come, baby.” He dipped a finger into her. “And you taste like pure, sweet honey.” She gave him a drowsy smile, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling her down beside him. “Will you stay with me tonight?” Leaving her would’ve been hell. He wanted her in his arms, wanted the reassurance of her lush curves pressed against him. Knowing she was safe. He drew her into the crook of his arm and she laid her cheek over his pounding heart. “You know I will.” “Sleep well, Antonio.” Her lips brushed across his chest. “And thank you for coming to me tonight, I needed you.” “I needed you too...more than you know.” * * * * * Shafts of sunshine slipped through the blinds, tickling Jada’s face and drawing her out of the sweetest dream. She scrubbed a hand across

She smothered a yawn and opened her eyes. “How are you feeling?” She rolled over, surprised and pleased to find Antonio in her bed. Stretching her body, she tested her muscles and wounds. “Not bad, a little sore, but that’s to be expected.” Thank God she was a shifter and could heal fast. A normal human would have been laid up for days with the injuries she’d received. “Mmm hmm?” He rolled her over onto her back again with a growl. “Good enough for some lovin’?” She giggled and traced her nails down his naked chest. “Definitely good enough for some lovin’.” “Yeah?” He lowered his head and kissed her. His mouth moved on hers soft and firm, his tongue slipping inside to drive her wild. He deepened the kiss and slipped a knee between her legs, pressing it hard against her center. She groaned, feeling the moisture gather in her pussy. She was ready for him when he pushed her thighs apart and settled between her legs. The thick head of his cock probed her folds, finding her entrance and then pushing slowly inside. “Oh, God, Antonio.” She gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders. “Am I hurting you?” “It feels fantastic. Don’t you dare stop.” He gave a husky laugh and pushed to the hilt, until she could feel him thick and deep inside her. “You feel pretty damn good yourself.” His eyes closed and he started making slow, steady penetrations that brought out the guttural moans from her. She lifted her hips, meeting each thrust, until they became quicker and more frantic. His head dipped and he licked her breast, drawing a nipple into his mouth. He sucked on her, bringing her closer and closer to the edge.

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Kiss me.” She lifted his chin with her fingers and pulling his face toward hers. His mouth crushed down on hers, his tongue thrusting past her lips to take control, moving in and out of her mouth, mimicking the action of his cock. The tension peaked and then exploded into waves of pleasure. “Antonio. Oh, I’m yours.” She cried out, throwing her head back against the pillow and riding the waves of sensation. His lips moved down her neck, and then gently bit her shoulder. Pleasure coursed through her as she realized what was happening. He was marking her, claiming her as his mate. He came inside her, burying his head against her neck. It was right, he’s the one. Jada lowered her head and sunk her teeth into his shoulder, marking him in return.

Chapter Seven They’d claimed each other, Antonio realized. And he wasn’t as shocked as he should’ve been. It felt right knowing that they were mates. Jada sighed and snuggled closer. “So which bank do you work for, Tony? Are you from Oregon?” Guilt flooded through him, and he was unable to stop the tension that froze his muscles. “I’m from San Diego.” That part wasn’t a lie. Christ, he could trust her now. He should just tell her he was a bounty hunter. “San Diego? Guess you’ll have to move up here, Mr. Banker.” She gave him a sexy little smile. “I’m glad you’re a banker actually. I don’t think I’d have chosen you as my mate otherwise.” His chest tightened. “What?” She sighed. “Sorry, that came out wrong. What I’m trying to say is I’m glad you have a safe career. I try and avoid getting involved with men who do the risky ones.” She wanted him to have a safe career? Being a bounty hunter wasn’t exactly safe, far from it. “My best friend was married to a cop and he was killed in the line of duty.” The sadness in her voice made him tighten his arms around her. “I watched how it tore her up. How the anguish and misery ate away at her family. She never got over it. I swore I would never marry a man in that type of career.”

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens He could barely speak. The bitter reality check was like acid in his belly. He forced himself to speak. “I’m so sorry, baby.” They lay cuddling for a bit, but guilt gnawed away at him. He finally pushed her away gently and climbed out of bed. “I’m going to take a shower.” “All right. I’m just going to rest for a bit.” Jada fell back against the pillow, watching him go into the bathroom, and allowing herself a silly little smile. The past couple days had been incredible. She’d had the most emotionally intense orgasms she could remember having. She’d bonded with him on a level that went beyond sex, even though they’d been doing plenty of that. Her smile slipped. What did she actually know about him? Really, she didn’t even know his last name. And she’d gone to bed with him. Three times. Oral sex doesn’t count as sex. She giggled at her irrational reasoning. Uh. Nice try, hon. Besides, there would be plenty of time to learn the minor details. Right now she just wanted to get to know her mate better. Mate? Oh God. They’d actually claimed each other. Warmth spread throughout her body. She liked the idea of them together. She flipped onto her side, wincing slightly as her wound ached. Well, at least it didn’t hurt as bad this morning. Memories of the man who’d done this to her sent a shudder through her body. Why was Wilson after her? What could he possibly want? Revenge? You’re testimony was what sentenced him to die, Jada. Think about it. Her brows drew together. Shaking her head, she slipped out of bed. The bottom line was he had escaped before the execution had been carried out. And he seemed bent on getting revenge. And now she had to keep her guard up, always worrying about when he’d attack again. Screw that. I won’t wait around for him and be an easy target. She’d promised Aidan last night that he could bring in a sub to teach the riding classes this morning. But a new plan clawed through her head.
37
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens Peeking over at the clock, she made her decision. She would teach her riding lesson as usual, and if that was using herself as bait to draw Kenny Wilson, so be it. She’d be ready this time. There were still twenty minutes until class was due to start. She walked to the closet and stepped into her clothes. Once dressed, she went to the door, twisted the handle, and then paused. Antonio was going to freak out, but she should still let him know she was going. No. He’d just try and convince her not to teach the morning lesson. And she wasn’t about to put her life on hold because of some stupid criminal. She pulled open the door and slipped outside. * * * * * Antonio turned off the shower and stepped out, grabbing a towel off the rack. He rubbed the terrycloth through his hair and over his body, and then wrapped it around his waist. His thoughts turned back to Jada and how he’d left her. Her small body lying naked on the bed. A pleased smile on her face. His dick hardened under the towel. He wanted her again, so soon after just having her. Maybe he could make love to her one more time before they started the day. The memory of her earlier comments came back to haunt him. She’d sworn never to marry a man with a dangerous career. Everything that had happened, everything between them was threatened because of the one small lie he’d told. He closed his eyes, feeling almost sick. He needed to tell her. He opened the bathroom door, preparing for the worst. His gaze landed on the empty bed and then scanned the rest of the room. She was gone. A knot formed in his gut. Damn. Where the hell had she went? He dropped the towel and jerked on his clothes. A minute later he tore out of her cabin. The rocks from the path crunched under his feet as he took off toward the lodge. Swearing under his breath, he spotted Aidan was
38
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens walking down the trail toward the cabin. The other man saw him at the same time. Aidan’s eyebrows drew together in a scowl. “You’d better not be coming from where I think you’re coming from.” “Have you seen Jada? Did she pass you?” “Jesus.” The other man shook his head. “You slept with my little sister, and then sent her off on her own when someone’s out to hurt her?” Antonio’s jaw clenched. “I should hit you for saying that, but fortunately for you, I don’t have the time. Do you know where she might be?” “She gives riding lessons every morning at nine‐thirty. But she wouldn’t be foolish enough to try and do it with an injury. I told her last night I would have someone fill in for her.” Antonio shook his head. Jada was a stubborn woman. How likely was it that she’d actually listened to her brother? “I’ll check the stables, you check the lodge.” Antonio stepped past Aidan and broke into a run, shifting into his jaguar form, the clothes ripping from his body. His anger faded as his thoughts centered on finding Jada before she could get into any more trouble. A second later a leopard appeared abreast of him. Aidan again. Antonio paid him little attention and soon Aidan broke away to head toward the lodge. Antonio kept pace toward the stables. God, let her be okay. * * * * * Jada’s leg still ached. She limped, trying not to wince as she went back into the barn to grab a saddle for Misty. Maybe this hadn’t been the best idea. If Wilson did come after her, would she have the strength to take him on? If she shifted into leopard form, her chances certainly went up. She scowled, securing the saddle. He’d gotten lucky taking a bite out of her leg last night. Hell, she was out for a little revenge herself now.
39
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens That is, if she got the chance to take him on. She’d sent the replacement instructor Donald away, telling him she was well enough to teach her own lessons today. He’d seemed skeptical and had probably gone straight to inform her brothers of her decision. Which gave her about five minutes to get her student ready and riding before they came to take her back to the lodge. She rolled her eyes and lifted the saddle into her arms, walking back out of the barn. There was only one student today. A werefalcon who was eager to learn how to ride English style. Jada glanced around, looking for her student. Funny. She’d been here a moment ago. She heard the cry of a bird and glanced up, spotting the falcon flying away. Interesting. Had something scared her? The hair on the back of her neck rose, and the same rancid scent from yesterday filled her nostrils. Wilson was here. She refused to let on that she knew he was watching her. Instead, she put the saddle down, turning to walk back into the barn to wait — knowing he would come. There was no doubt about it. God, her brothers would kill her if anything went wrong. Heck, they’d probably throttle her for attempting this period. Kenny would be expecting her to be in human form, and that would be his fatal mistake. She shifted and moved behind a barrel of hay, near the front entrance. He would walk right past her and then be trapped. She waited. A couple minutes went by and then she heard the crackling of straw in the entrance. She wasn’t alone anymore. It could have been her student, but she had a feeling it wasn’t. Moments later the familiar sour smell confirmed her guess. “Where did you go, sweetheart?” His nasal voice rang through the barn. “I got plans for you. You’re my ticket out of the country. I’m sure your family can afford a couple million easily.” She spotted his grubby tennis shoes as he passed her. He was still in human form. Idiot. He wouldn’t even see it coming. “Hey, you put up a good fight yesterday. But then maybe you didn’t like me watching you fuck that piece of shit bounty hunter.”
40
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens What? Her muscles tightened and her stomach dropped. Bounty Hunter? Antonio was a banker...wasn’t he? Denial clotted heavily in her belly. “You know, I haven’t had a woman in quite awhile, sweetheart. Being on the run can sure put a kink in a person’s sex life.” His laugh carried throughout the barn as he moved further back. Bile rose in her throat. “But you can make up for it. We’ll have plenty of time to get reacquainted.” Death was too good for this man, but nevertheless, she intended to kill him. She crept out from behind the hay, prepared to attack. “Jada?” Shit! Still out of Kenny’s view, she spun to the entrance to see Antonio in the doorway. Oh God, what terrible timing! There was a click, a sound she recognized as the safety of a gun being taken off. She turned just as Kenny fired a shot at Antonio. Antonio dove to the left, but the bullet had grazed him. She watched his face twist as he reached for his own gun. Fury exploded inside her. She roared and launched herself into the walkway, charging Kenny. His eyes widened. They both knew he didn’t have time to shift. His only hope would be getting another shot off. He raised the gun, but she was already on him. Her claws sunk into his chest, pushing him backward as she fell on top of him. Her jaws opened, ready to sink into the throbbing pulse in his neck. The cold barrel of the gun pressed into her belly stopped her. There was a gunshot and she stiffened, waiting for the pain to come. Instead, Kenny’s eyes turned glassy and he went limp under her. A growing puddle of blood spread beneath his head. “Jada.” Antonio fell to his knees beside her and dropped the smoking gun from his hand. She saw the faint stain of red on his arm and growled in alarm. Shifting back to human form, she went to stand beside him. “Antonio, why did you come after me?” She pushed up the sleeve on his T‐shirt to inspect the wound. “I had him.”

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Jada, what the hell were you thinking? You could have been killed.” He knocked her hands away. It didn’t matter, since she’d already deduced the bullet had just grazed the fleshy part of his arm. “What the hell was I thinking? What the hell were you thinking? You came charging in here like that, and blew the entire trap I’d set!” “You had no right to go after him on your own. Do you realize you could have been killed? I was scared shitless for you.” “I had a score to settle with him. This was my fight.” She glared at him. “And yes I realize you must have been worried. Now you’ll know exactly how I’ll feel every time you go after a criminal, bounty hunter.”

Chapter Eight “I —” Antonio blinked and looked away. “Shit. How did you find out?” “Does it matter? You lied to me.” “I was going to tell you this morning.” He shook his head and reached for her, but she shrugged off his touch. “You’ll excuse me if I find that a bit hard to believe. I even told you about my friend’s husband, and still you didn’t come clean.” “Jada, I wanted to tell you. But then we were having that intimate moment, and I didn’t want to hurt you —” “Fuck you, Antonio. You hurt me the minute you lied.” She stood back up and headed toward the entrance, pulling her cell phone from her pocket and dialing the lodge. “Eva, send my brothers’ to the stables. We just killed a fugitive in the barn.” She shut her phone and spun around to face Antonio, who seemed to be holding his share of irritation. “You’re not being fair, Jada. This morning we marked each other. We are mated now.” “Well, I’m sure there’s a way around it. The man I chose was an illusion.” He caught her arm as she walked away from him, spinning her around. “Yes, my career is dangerous, I admit it. But answer me this. Do you worry about Cole and what he does?”
43
Dating Season by Shelli Stevens The fight drained from her body, and she took a moment to consider the question. “Yes, I do. But it’s not the same though.” “How is it not the same, Jada? His line of work isn’t that far from what I do.” “Yes it is. Still Waters has a reputation for being safe.” “I understand that, and that’s because he gets rid of any problems. The bad people.” “Exactly. And that’s how it’s different, Antonio.” She took a deep breath and looked down. “He deals with danger when it comes to him. He doesn’t go chasing after it.” He was silent for a moment. “Jada...” Obviously he didn’t know what to say. Her smile was bittersweet when she raised her gaze to his. “And the bottom line is this. You’re a bounty hunter. Can you honestly tell me you won’t be leaving me and going off to hunt down another escaped convict?” His mouth opened, and then he closed it. Her throat went tight and she felt tears prick behind her eyes. “Yeah. I didn’t think so.” “What’s going on? You killed him?” Cole asked, coming into the barn with Aidan right behind him. Antonio gestured toward the back of the barn and Cole went to investigate. Aidan stayed put, crossing his arms across his chest. “How are you two? Is anybody hurt?” “Antonio is, you should probably see to him,” she mumbled. “I’m going back to the lodge.” “I’m fine. Jada hold on.” Antonio grabbed her arm. Aidan’s hand clamped down on his wrist, and he removed Antonio’s hand from her. “Let’s have a look at that injury, buddy.” Grateful for Aidan’s interference, Jada slipped past them and out of the barn as tears blurred her eyes. She shifted, running as fast as she could back to her cabin thinking about what she was going to do now. By the time she reached her front porch and shifted back, she knew the answer. She grabbed the phone and dialed Quinn’s number in Florida.

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens * * * * * “You’re free to go, Antonio.” Aidan gave him a brief smile and closed the stack of paperwork he’d just had him sign. Antonio’s jaw clenched, but he made no move to get up from the wooden chair he was sitting in. They’d called him into the office an hour ago, and had been nothing but polite while he’d filled out paperwork regarding Kenny Wilson’s death. But he wasn’t fooled. Their resentment toward him was there, the anger they held in check. They’d kept Jada away from him, blocking all attempts he’d made to see her during the past day and a half. “I’m not leaving until I’ve seen her.” Cole and Aidan both watched him, their expressions unreadable. “Tell me something,” Cole finally said. “Do you enjoy being a bounty hunter?” The question threw him. His response was automatic. “It’s all I’ve ever done. It’s just what I do.” “And do you like what you do?” Did he? It was a damn good question. One he’d never taken time to consider. Because there’d never been anything better, never been any other option he’d wanted to explore. And, most of all, there’d never been a woman he’d willingly give it up for. “You’re awfully quiet there. Is that a no?” Aidan asked. “I never thought about whether I enjoyed it. It’s a job. A job I’m damn good at.” “And what if I offered you another job, Antonio?” Cole stood up and went to look out the window. “Another job you could be damn good at. What if I offered you a job with security here at Still Waters?” He blinked, surprise and suspicion hitting him. “And why would you do that?” Cole shrugged. “Because I could use a man like you at the resort.”

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Besides,” Aidan stepped forward. “You’re Jada’s mate. I saw the mark when she was packing. I assume you intend to marry her, and we keep family close by.” “I see.” “You do intend to marry her, don’t you?” Cole asked. Christ, he would have to fall for a woman with three insanely protective brothers. Good thing he only had to deal with two. “Of course I intend to marry her. Once I can convince her I won’t die on her.” Aidan cracked a smile at his obvious frustration. Cole shrugged. “Take my job offer and I guarantee you’ll ease her mind. Do you like it here at Still Waters?” What wasn’t to like? The resort was a haven for shifters; built within nature to blend in with a shifter’s natural environment. The resort had felt like coming home the moment he’d first checked in. It was special, a place to be treasured. There was a reason it was rated five stars. His dad’s career had involved travel, and his childhood had been spent moving from city to city. Home had been nothing more than a word to him growing up. He’d always been jealous of close families like the Lassiters. “You know I love it here.” Aidan slapped him on the back and grinned. “Well then pack your bags. You’re going to Florida.” Hot anger built in his stomach. Had they been fucking with him? His eyes narrowed, and his fists clenched at his sides. “I told you once, and I’ll tell you again. I’m not leaving until I’ve seen Jada.” Cole nodded. “Exactly. She’s in Florida with Quinn. She left right after the incident the barn.” Aidan nodded. “Time to meet the third brother.” Antonio blinked in surprise. Jada wasn’t even here? He’d been trying to see her for the past thirty‐six hours, and she wasn’t even at the resort?

Chapter Nine Jada groaned and rolled over onto her stomach. Her skin was red and she could practically hear the crackle of it frying. One would have thought two bottles of sunblock would’ve been sufficient. How the hell did Quinn deal with this heat? She’d gone to college down here, but had always found the heat overwhelming. “You up for grabbing some beers in an hour?” She wrinkled her nose and glanced over at her brother. His skin was dripping with saltwater since he’d just come back from swimming in the ocean. “I don’t know if I’m up to being social, Quinn.” “You’re always up for being social, Jada. Shit, what the hell’s gotten into you?” He flopped down next to her, and leaned back on his elbow. “You’re acting like your dog just died.” She shrugged. “I’d rather not talk about it. I’m just happy I’m getting the chance to see you. We miss you at the resort.” “Yeah, well, I miss the sun when I’m not in Florida.” Giggling, she smiled. “Thanks for taking the day off. Although, I don’t want you to feel like you have to stay home with me.” “It’s no problem. I needed a day off.” Jada closed her eyes, listening to the sound of the waves hitting the beach. “What do you want?” Quinn asked suddenly. “I’m here for Jada.”

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens Jada’s eyes snapped open and she stood up, her heart pounding. She stared up at Antonio, her jaw hanging open. He was here. He’d actually flown to Florida. “Really. Well maybe Jada doesn’t want to see you.” Quinn stood up, putting himself between her and Antonio. Her gaze ran over her mate. He looked good. His muscular calves were tan below his shorts, his arms folded across his wide chest as he glared down at her. “We need to talk, Jada.” His jaw clenched. “I don’t think she wants to talk to you.” Quinn stepped forward, getting right in Antonio’s face. “So why don’t you just take a hike?” “I don’t think so.” Antonio growled and stepped around him, grabbing Jada by the wrist and pulling her forward. Quinn growled and shoved him back, but Antonio didn’t release his hold. “Show him, Jada.” “Antonio —” “Fine, I’ll show him.” He jerked her bikini strap to the side, uncovered the small bite mark on her shoulder. She groaned miserably. There went her cover. Quinn stepped forward to check out the mark. “Is this why you ran across the country, Jada?” Antonio pulled his own shirt to the side and barred his similar mark. “That’s right. This is between me and your sister. My mate.” Quinn shook his head. “Sorry, Jada, but you need to deal with this one on your own. This is your mate, not some damned one night stand.” Quinn strode off down the beach and she heaved an inward sigh. Obviously Antonio had informed Cole and Aidan that they were mates, seeing as they’d given him Quinn’s address. Maybe she could bolt and try and outrun Antonio. He must have guessed her thoughts, because he slipped an arm around her waist and escorted her off the beach. Her body tingled where he touched her, but her mind was screaming in annoyance.

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens “Why did you come after me?” she demanded through gritted teeth as she climbed into what must have been a rental truck. “Because you’re my mate, Jada.” He turned and gave her a hard look. “And you’d damn well better start realizing that. You’re mine. This is the third time you’ve run from me. No more running.” Her pulse jumped at the raw need on his face. Dampness flooded her bikini bottoms and she bit back a groan. Part of her was thrilled that he’d come after her, and part of her wanted to cry. It was impossible. They both knew it. He started the truck and pulled onto the road. “I can smell your desire for me, Jada. You want me. Why are you fighting this? Fighting us?” His voice was hoarse, and he suddenly pulled the truck off onto a small side road nearly overgrown with brush. “I told you why! Why are you doing this to me?” She felt the tears prick her eyes. “You know I won’t —” “Cole offered me a job at Still Waters, Jada. I’m done being a bounty hunter.” Her jaw fell, and she blinked in shock. “You’re done? But...why?” “Because it was just a job. It meant nothing to me, just fed my wanderlust.” Slipping his hands around her waist, he lifted her onto his lap so she was straddling him. “And then I met you and realized I didn’t want to wander anymore.” “You don’t?” She licked her lips, her blood racing at what he was getting at. “What do you want?” “I love you, Jada. I want to marry you and start a family, put down some roots in a decent place like Still Waters.” “Oh, Antonio.” She buried her face in his shoulder, wrapping her arms around his waist. “I love you so much.” He groaned and lowered his mouth to hers. His lips were warm and hard against hers. When he traced his tongue against the seam of hers, she opened for him and allowed him inside. His tongue swept into her mouth. Demanding, seeking as he wrapped a hand in the length of her hair, tilting her head back.

Dating Season by Shelli Stevens With his free hand, he unhooked the back of her bikini, plucking the crochet top from her breasts and dropping it onto the seat. “How about we start working on that family right now?” He thumbed her nipples and she trembled. “I want you. Here, now. Will you let me take you, baby?” “Yes. Please, Antonio.” She rocked back and forth on his erection, and he groaned. He cupped her pussy through the bikini bottoms and she felt his dick grow thicker. Lowering his head, he took one rigid nipple into his mouth and sucked. The sensation sent pulses of heat from her breast to her pussy, and she squirmed on his lap. Slipping a finger inside the bottoms, he found her clit and started to rub it in slow circles. She gasped and moved her hips against his talented fingers. “Take off your bikini bottoms.” Struggling to accommodate, she slipped off his lap and pushed down bottoms, kicking them to the floor. Antonio unzipped his shorts and pulled his cock free, moving his hand up and down the swollen length. “Come ride me, baby.” Needing no further invitation, Jada straddled him again, sinking slowly down on his thick erection. He dug his fingers into her hips, growling as she rotated her hips. His pelvis thrust upward as she pushed down, and they both groaned in pleasure. Their cries and the sounds of lovemaking filled the truck. She rode him faster, harder, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him. The pleasure built inside her, finally cresting into an intense orgasm that left her shaking. Antonio came a second later, spilling himself inside her. And she closed her eyes, imagining the possibility of having his baby. “What are you thinking about?” he asked, kissing her shoulder, the spot where he’d marked her before. “Us. Our future.”

I like you thinking those kind of thoughts.” “Yeah, I thought you might.” She snuggled against him. “Promise you’ll never run from me again, Jada. I couldn’t handle it if you did.” She lifted her head and gave him an intimate smile. “I love you, Antonio. The only running I’ll be doing is when you’re beside me.” The End
