Drakon’s Treasure
Prologue All myths and legends have basis in fact. And so it is with the dragons of Amanas. Once a prosperous and progressive planet, Amanas was home to many different cultures and species. Dragons, wizards, magic and man all existed side by side, if not always harmoniously, then at least with a certain tolerance. But dragons have always been a solitary and suspicious species, fighting amongst each other for land and treasure and mates. Over time, they declined almost to the point of extinction. Male representatives from each of the four families of dragons—Mountain, Sea, Forest and Desert— went to the wizards seeking help to save their species. It is well know that wizards generally have little interest in anything beyond themselves and their magic, but the wizard Allisdar chose to listen to the dragons’ plea. He cast a spell, allowing each male dragon to shift into a human form for the span of a year. In that time, the dragon lords mated with as many female humans as they could. Unfortunately, the women were ignorant to the true nature of the men they were mating with. A handful of these women bore children, all sons who seemed as normal as any other. Until they hit puberty. Then the change began. Mothers were horrified, villages were terrified, and the boys were cast out. The dragon lords returned to claim their offspring and to raise them. A new species had been created, neither human nor dragon, but both. Blessed with the longevity, instincts and strength of dragons, but with the cunning intellect and heart of man, these boys soon grew into powerful males able to shift and live as either man or beast. They were named Drakons, or sons of the dragons. In time, they provided a bridge between the dragons and mankind, becoming trusted advisors and legendary warriors to the kings and rulers of Amanas. But greed and mistrust grew amongst the human kings. They feared their Drakon lords and coveted the treasures that they were continually amassing over the passing years. Rising up in a concerted effort, the human rulers tricked their loyal warriors. Blood flowed and many were slain. 5

But many were not. Retribution was swift and brutal. Entire kingdoms were razed to the ground, as the anger of the Drakon lords knew no limits. And when it was done, they withdrew from the world of man and back into the mountains, seas, forests and deserts of their fathers, forsaking the world of man. Amanas was thrown into chaos and for decades war and strife became a way of life. But the people never forgot the Drakon lords, and the rare time that one ventured down to human kingdoms they were treated with the awe and suspicion that they had earned. Their prowess as warriors was the stuff of myths and legends. But the truth was much different. Like their fathers before them, they were lonely in their solitary existence and their numbers dwindled. But every now and then, one would venture out of seclusion and then the talk of legends would start again. So it began…

Drakon’s Treasure
Chapter One Eartha tugged her tattered cloak tighter around her trembling body, making sure her head was well covered, as she glanced around the disreputable bar from her hiding spot deep in the shadows. All around her men were drinking and laughing, feasting on food and on the women who served them ale. The smell of stale food, sour ale, and sex permeated the air, almost making her gag. She pulled the edge of her cloak up to her mouth, taking care not to breathe too deeply. Time was running out. Desperation nipped at her heels and she knew that she’d do whatever was necessary to escape her captors. She closed her eyes and hugged her arms around her thin body as the futility of it all washed over her. For the past five years, since the age of seventeen, she’d been a slave, captured when the armies of Gradoc had swarmed across her village. Many of the men had been slaughtered, and the women and children taken as the prizes of war. Her life had been so simple before then. Tending the animals and the garden, and trying to eke out an existence in the harsh land at the base of the great mountains of Varkas. As a child she’d thought her life hard at times, but she’d had no idea just how brutal life could be until Hameon of Gradoc had taken her as a slave. For five long years, she’d labored in the fields by day and had her body taken by Hameon by night. Eartha bit her lip, refusing to cry. Weakness was the quickest way to despair and so many of her friends and family had given up or died. But she had vowed to be free, or to die trying. Eartha had learned patience, biding her time across the long years, watching for her opportunity. And it had finally come. Hameon had been called to the castle by King Fredoc and had left Eartha behind in his stronghold, under the watch of his trusted guardsmen. She had been a slave for so 7

many years it had never occurred to the guards that she would even attempt to slip away from them on market day. But that is exactly what she’d done. With only the clothing on her back, she’d slipped away when the guards had been busy ogling the new slaves that were being auctioned off in the market square. The sight had sickened Eartha, but she’d put her head down and disappeared into the crowd. But the guards had been swift on her heels, fearful of Hameon’s wrath if they should lose her. She’d skirted up and down alleyways, trying to evade them, finally taking refuge in this dark and dingy bar. Her mind worked furiously as she tried to figure out what to do. The guards would be looking for a single woman, so she needed to attach herself to a man. The thought of giving her body to a stranger was abhorrent to her, but after five years with Hameon, she knew she could survive anything. Swallowing the bile that threatened to rise from her stomach, she searched intently around the bar. In the far corner, she found what she was looking for. A lone man was slumped against the wall, mostly hidden by the table in front of him. Taking her courage in hand, she walked toward him, careful to keep to the shadows. She evaded grasping hands and ducked under the arm of a drunk as he attempted to waylay her. Not once did she take her eyes off her quarry. Silently sliding into the seat across from him, she squinted, narrowing her gaze to try to make out his features. A deep hood covered his head and no matter how hard she tried, she could not see his face. But it didn’t matter. In the end, she would offer her body in exchange for the slim protection that being with him would provide her. Decided and fully committed to her plan, she uttered the words that would ultimately determine her fate. “Would you like some company for the night, good sir?”
Arrik Varkas Drakon wrapped his fingers more firmly around the mug of ale that sat on the table in front of him. He’d been aware of the woman from the moment she’d 8

skittered through the front door of the tavern. He’d sensed her desperation and fear as she shrank back into the shadows. She’d intrigued him and that in itself was surprising. He’d watched from beneath the cover of his cloak as she stood there, obviously trying to determine her next move. His acute vision had allowed him to see her perfectly, but he couldn’t tell much about her as her cloak covered her from head to knees. Her feet were bare. Anger stirred within him as if somehow her condition was a personal affront to him. His eyebrows knitted together at the thought, and the feelings accompanying it, puzzled him greatly. He’d come to the bar to have a tankard of ale and to watch humanity for a while, driven by loneliness and boredom out of his cave. Usually he was content with his life, preferring to be alone. But lately, he’d been restless. Thinking that all he needed was a change, he’d traveled here in search of some entertainment. But people were the same as they’d always been and he’d been thinking about leaving. Then she’d walked in. Although she held herself still, he sensed her growing unease. Fearing she might bolt if he didn’t speak, he waved her over to the bench next to him. “Come here so I may see you.” She hesitated for the barest of seconds before slipping out of her seat and sliding onto the bench next to him. When she was settled, she kept her head bent and her hands fisted in her lap. “Look at me.” Her head jerked up at his command. “Lower your hood.” “Please, sir.” She swallowed back whatever else she was going to say and slowly lifted her hands to the edges of her hood. She pushed back the edges to reveal her face, but did not remove it totally. But it was enough. Arrik was spellbound by the beauty seated next to him. Her face was heart-shaped and her skin was pale, almost translucent. Her eyes were huge, slightly slanted at the corners, and the same color as the violets that grew wild in the mountain meadows near

his home. Her nose tilted upward slightly, but had a small bump in the center. He wondered how she’d broken it. Reaching out a hand, he cupped her fragile jaw, tracing the curve of her full bottom lip with his thumb. She gasped slightly and her mouth parted to reveal straight white teeth. With her hood still covering her, he couldn’t tell if her hair was long or short, but it was black as a raven’s wing. She swallowed hard and he watched her throat move convulsively. Her chest rose and fell as her breathing grew more rapid. She licked her lips, her tongue accidentally licking his thumb. Desire, strong and potent, ripped through his veins. His cock swelled, pushing hard against the opening of his leather pants. It had been decades since he’d wanted a woman, longer since he’d actually had one. Neither the beast nor the man in him had been interested. Until now. But he’d observed the world enough to know how the games of man were played. “How much?” His whispered words were almost a growl, as the lustful beast growing within him demanded he take her no matter the cost. The man was smarter and waited. “I am no whore!” She was shaking now, more in anger than fear. Her response confused him. “Then why did you offer yourself to me?” He could see the confusion in her eyes as she struggled to regain control of her emotions. “I…” She shook her head and sighed. The door of the tavern banged off the wall as several well-armed men, obviously elite guardsmen, surged through. The woman next to him gasped and practically threw herself into his arms, clinging to his side as she tugged the hood more firmly around her face. “Please.” She grabbed the front of his cloak, twisting the fabric in her fingers. “I’ll do anything you want. Just tell them I’m with you.” He sensed just how much it cost her to speak those words and it angered him that she felt she had to plead. “They will not take you,” he heard himself promise her. And the moment he spoke the words, he knew that they were true. He would not let her go

until he’d discovered all her secrets, until the lust that she fired in his belly had been slaked. The armed men tore through the tavern pushing aside patrons and shoving tables out of their way. “Anybody seen a lone woman come in here?” “We don’t want any trouble.” The barkeep hefted a cudgel from behind the counter. “And you won’t have none,” the guard retorted. “Not unless you’re hiding Lord Hameon’s runaway slave.” He grabbed a woman up from one of the benches and tilted her face toward the dim light from the lanterns before shoving her back down into her seat. The leader of the guards stalked across the room and Arrik could feel the woman quivering against him. The man reached his hand over the table toward her cloak. “Let’s have a look at you.” Quick as a snake, Arrik captured the guard’s wrist in an iron grip. “You will not touch her. She is mine.” The tavern went deathly silent at his refusal. The guard yanked his arm from Arrik’s grasp. “I don’t know who you are, stranger, but I am Proctor, the leader of Lord Hameon of Gradoc’s elite guards. Stand aside or die.” The man puffed out his chest as he spoke, as if expecting to be immediately obeyed. His comrades were behind him now, six men in total. Arrik stirred, sliding out of the seat. The other man just stared up at him as he stood to his full seven feet. Raising his hands, he slowly pushed his hood aside, revealing his face for the first time. The other man paled and stumbled back a step. “I am Arrik Varkas Drakon and the woman is mine.”

Chapter Two Eartha could almost feel sorry for Proctor. Almost. Like the rest of the patrons in the tavern, she watched the scene unfolding in front of her, barely able to believe her eyes. He was a Drakon lord! She’d known he was big, but the table and the shadows, combined with his cloak had hidden much. When he stood, the sheer size of him had been revealed. She’d never seen such a massive man before. His shoulders were huge, blocking most of her view of the room. Keeping her face hidden, she shifted her body and looked up at him, needing to see his face. When she saw it, she almost wished she hadn’t. Austere and hard were the two words that best described him. His face was long but his cheekbones and jaw looked as if they were hewn from stone. His nose was hooked slightly and his lips were thin. She couldn’t quite make out the color of his eyes, but they almost seemed to glow in the dim light. As if he sensed her looking at him, he turned and faced her, staring right at her for several seconds before turning back to Proctor and his men. For those few seconds, his face was perfectly illuminated by the lantern near their table. A tattoo bisected his face, covering the left side and disappearing into the neckline of his cloak. It was an intricate design of swirls and markings, and if the legends were correct, it would cover the entire left side of his body all the way down to his toes. It was emerald green and the same color that shone from his eyes. His long, dark hair framed his compelling face. Proctor was stuttering as he apologized. “I’m sorry, milord, but we’re looking for a runaway slave.”

“The woman is mine.” Eartha noted that Arrik never at any time said that she wasn’t the person they were searching for, but rather avoided the question, laying his own claim. Arrik turned and held out his hand to her. She grabbed it like the lifeline it was, clinging to him. His fingers wrapped around hers, practically swallowing hers whole. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her beneath the cradle of his arm. Turning his back on the armed men, he walked toward the entrance. The crowd parted quickly as people all but jumped out of his way. But Proctor wasn’t quite finished. “Milord, I still need to check the woman beneath the cloak.” Eartha could hear the challenge in his voice, but she sensed no tension in the man next to her as they continued to walk toward the door. Only three more steps. “Milord!” This time, Proctor shouted and Eartha could hear the sound of a sword being drawn from a scabbard. The next second, she was thrust aside as he whirled to meet his opponent. Unarmed, he reached beneath Proctor’s swing, grabbed his sword arm and squeezed tight. Proctor’s face turned red and then white as the pressure on his arm was increased until his nerveless fingers opened and the sword clattered to the floor. Arrik transferred his hold to Proctor’s neck, wrapping his fingers around it and lifting him straight off the floor so that his booted feet dangled in the air. “I said the woman is mine.” Arrik stared at the struggling man and then tossed him backward into his men, who stumbled as they grabbed their gasping leader. Dismissing them, Arrik turned to her and held out his hand. “Come.” Eartha placed her hand in his once again and allowed him to lead her out into the growing dusk of the evening. The air was cool as it drifted beneath her thin cloak, chilling her. Beads of sweat dried on her skin, making her shiver. “Are you cold?” Startled by his concern, she immediately denied her discomfort. She did not want to displease him, at least not until she was well away from here.

She jumped when a weight descended upon her shoulders. Heat surrounded her as he tugged the corners of his cloak around her, taking the time to tie the fastening at the neck. Eartha stared uncertainly at him as his scent surrounded her. It made her feel warm inside and gave her a funny feeling in the pit of her stomach. “But you’ll be cold,” she protested. One corner of his mouth turned up in the barest of smiles. “I will be fine.” He turned away and briskly began to tow her down an alley. “Come. We must be away from here.” His grasp was as good as a shackle around her wrist, but unlike a cold, biting piece of iron, he was warm and at no time did his grip hurt her. He led her to the edge of town, put his lips together and whistled. It was a strange song, and a pattern emerged as he continued. Eartha felt the ground tremble beneath her feet before she saw the beast emerge from the darkness. Large and powerful, the black horse came to an abrupt halt in front of them. Raising its powerful forelegs into the air, it whinnied as it pawed the air. Eartha barely had time to take in the magnificence of the animal before she was all but tossed onto its back. Arrik mounted behind her, his long arms reaching around her as he wrapped his fingers in the horse’s mane. With his massive legs controlling the horse, he urged it into the night and the land beyond the town. The wind whipped at her face, but she was warm and strangely content in this stranger’s arms. And best of all, she was free. No longer did Hameon own her. The leather-covered iron collar at her throat rubbed her skin, mocking her claim to freedom, but she ignored it, not allowing it to mar the moment. She’d find some way to be rid of the hated symbol of slavery sooner or later. Now that the lights of the town were behind them, Eartha began to notice her immediate surroundings. The flex of the muscles of the horse as it raced across the open land. The smell of the fresh night air. But most of all, she became very aware of the man behind her.

Drakon’s Treasure
His scent and the heat from his body encompassed her, a fresh, clean, earthy scent that was familiar and somehow comforting, but at the same time thrilled her senses. It was so unlike the sweat and stench of Hameon, his men and the castle where she’d lived the past five years. Home. His smell reminded her of home. Of the time before Hameon when she spent her days out in the sunshine and wind, under the protection of the mountain as she’d tended to her chores. Those days seemed so long ago, almost as if they were little more than a dream. He tightened his grip around her midsection, and the motion of the horse caused his large, muscled forearm to press against the underside of her breasts. It made her feel flushed as the sensation traveled down to the juncture between her thighs, making it throb. Eartha didn’t know what was wrong with her. She’d never felt like this before. It was suddenly very hard to breathe and her heart began to pound in her chest. It wasn’t fear she was feeling, not exactly. Still, butterflies beat at her stomach as anticipation filled her. Perhaps it was the flight to freedom that excited her. Yes, she nodded sensibly, that had to be it. Then he touched her. It was the barest whisper of a touch, so at first she thought it might just be the wind. But while she’d been lost in her thoughts, he’d slipped his hand beneath the two cloaks and laid his hand against her stomach. Ever so slowly, he slid it upward until his hand completely covered her breast. She swallowed hard as she was bombarded with sensation. Apprehension coupled with expectation. Part of her feared for him to touch her, but deep inside her a small flame flickered to life, urging her to take…what, she wasn’t quite sure. But against her own volition, she leaned forward, pushing her breast tighter into his palm. She felt his rumble of pleasure against her back, even though several layers of clothing were between them.

The horse slowed somewhat as it entered the forest, but continued to pick its way through the trees and upward toward the mountain. But strange as it was, Eartha felt safe. She knew the Drakon lord would not let her fall, so she surrendered herself to the pleasure his touch brought her. Pleasure had been in short supply in her life and it had been years since she’d felt this cared for or protected. And surprisingly enough, although he was a stranger, that was how he made her feel. He’d already put his life in jeopardy for her, protecting her from Hameon’s men. She almost cried out at the loss when he removed his hand. Without thought, she grabbed it and held it tight to her chest. His lips nuzzled aside her hood, tracing the curve of her ear before nipping at the lobe of her ear. Eartha shivered as she felt her insides tightening. “I want to feel your soft skin against my hand.” His whispered words fired her blood, filling her with unexpected needs. “Yes,” she whispered back, the sound lost in the wind. Yet, he seemed to have heard her. He carefully pulled his hand away from hers and tugged at the ties at the front of her dress. When he had the three of them undone, he slipped his hand beneath the fabric. This time, she moaned aloud when he touched her. The pads of his fingers were rough, but his touch was so incredibly gentle that it brought tears to her eyes. No one had ever treated her this way before. As if she were something special, someone to be cherished. His thumb scraped across the swollen tip of her nipple and the sensations from his touch echoed between her thighs. She cried out as she felt a gush of desire leave her inner core and soak her outer folds. She’d heard other slave women speak of such things, but she’d never felt it before. The experience was overwhelming, but it did nothing to quell the growing need within her. She felt hot and needy as he cupped her other breast, teasing the turgid tip with his thumb. She could only marvel at his strength as he controlled the horse with his powerful legs and thighs while his hands pleasured her.

When one of his hands traced the long line of her torso, down toward her stomach, she sucked in a breath but did nothing to stop him. She wanted to feel his touch everywhere. When he’d rescued her, she’d resigned herself to giving her body to him in payment, but that was no longer an issue. He could easily take what he wanted with no care of her and she could not stop him. But instead, he treated her as if she were a precious gift to be savored. She knew in her heart if she asked him to stop, he would. She didn’t know how she knew it, but she did. Years as a slave had taught her to read people, especially men, very well. And this man was unlike any she’d ever encountered. But, beyond that, was the difference in herself. For once in her life, she wanted to give to a man, wanted to experience some of the pleasure she’d only heard others talk about. But he was not just a man. Arrik was much more than that, he was a Drakon lord. Part beast, part man, she didn’t quite know what to do to please him. What if she displeased him? Terror swamped her mind as memories of Hameon flooded her. She’d survived the many beatings he’d given her, barely, but she’d never survive a strike from Arrik. His strength was enormous and many times that of any man. “Shh. Do not cry, little one.” He lifted his hand from her breast, softly stroking it across her cheek before returning it to its original position. It was only then she felt the wetness on her cheeks and realized she was crying. The wind dried her face quickly as she wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. “I’m sorry, my lord.” She took a deep breath to settle her nerves. “Why are you crying?” The genuine interest in his voice surprised her. She shrugged, not quite sure how to answer. His arms tightened around her, bringing her back tight against his body. She could feel the hard length of his erection digging into her back. He was much bigger than Hameon, but instead of being frightened, her inner core pulsed with need. Eartha didn’t know herself at the moment, 17
N.J. Walters
her emotions were in such a state. One moment she was frightened, the next aroused. It was no wonder she didn’t know how to answer him. “What is your name?” His question startled her. She hadn’t realized that she’d neglected to tell him her name. “Eartha, my lord.” “Eartha, what?” “Just Eartha, my lord, from the settlement below the mountains of Varkas.” He stilled at her words and she could feel the growing tension permeate his body. “Varkas?” She feared that somehow her words had angered him, but she would not lie. “Yes, my lord.” “My name is Arrik,” he reminded her as he buried his face in the crook of her neck and breathed deep. “You have nothing to fear from me, Eartha.” For some reason she trusted him. With instincts long honed for survival, she also knew that it was important that he know that as well. “I know, Arrik.” She tried out his name for the first time, enjoying the way it felt as it slipped off her tongue. “I trust you.” “Then all will be well.” His teeth grazed the top of her shoulder as his hands began to move upon her body.
Blood pounded against Arrik’s temple as he struggled to master himself. The beast within him was roaring to life, demanding he take Eartha and claim her as his. The urge to toss her to the ground and fuck her was almost overwhelming. She was from the mountain, his mountain, and thus she belonged to him. Possessiveness welled up within him, all but consuming him. He gritted his teeth, the muscles in his jaw working as he forced his touch to be gentle. The memory of her tears was burned into his mind. Oh, he would have her. Of that fact there was no doubt, but he would not hurt her. He wanted to bring her
18
Drakon’s Treasure
pleasure, hear her cries of satisfaction as he brought her to completion. Only then would he claim her. Her trust was a fragile gift and one he would not misuse. Beast he may be, but he was still a man, and it was that part of him that wanted only to bring her pleasure. Then she might not leave him. He squashed that thought immediately. Of course she would leave. He was a dragon and that fact alone was enough to frighten the bravest of men, let alone a woman. That’s why he’d called the wild horse to carry them on his back. He could easily have shifted and flown them to his home, but for some reason, he was loath to frighten her. The smell of her fear in the tavern still filled his nostrils and he wanted to wash its stench from her body until nothing but desire remained. He would enjoy her body and slake his lust, but then he would send her on her way. He was a loner and liked it that way. His words sounded hollow in his mind, but he ignored that fact. He’d been alone for hundreds of years and had long since resigned himself to never finding a mate. But right now, he had an armful of willing woman. One who fired his blood and aroused his senses, and he planned to take full advantage of that fact. Knowing that the horse knew the way to the mountain, Arrik was free to concentrate on Eartha. Eartha. Her name was like music in his mind and it suited her well. She was of the earth, her hair as black as the fertile soil in the fields of the mountains, her eyes the color of the flowers that grew there. Like the flowers, she looked fragile, but he suspected she was much stronger than she appeared. She would have to have been very strong, in order to survive years of slavery with her spirit intact. But she was his now, at least for a while, and he planned to enjoy her companionship to the fullest. With that thought, he blocked out all else and began to move his hands across her silken skin. As he continued to learn the shape of her breasts, first pleasuring one and then the other, he slipped his free hand lower over her stomach. The hair at the juncture of her thighs was soft as his palm stroked over it. “Lean back against me,” he urged her. The 19

beast within him roared as the weight of her body came back to rest against his chest. The action tilted her hips upward, opening her further for his touch. His cock was throbbing, a primal reminder of his desire and need, but he clenched his jaw and ignored his own need, focusing solely on Eartha’s pleasure. Gently, he stroked his fingers over her flesh, relishing the dampness he felt there. Good, she wanted him. Her body could not lie. He did not quite trust her to tell him the truth about her desire. She had been a slave for too long and obviously was nervous of him. Probably even feared him. Arrik wanted to prove to her that there was no need for her fear. He would bring her only pleasure. Keeping his touch light and undemanding, he began to stroke the moist folds of her cunt. Her back arched against him as she shifted her hips higher into his hand to deepen the contact. His chest rumbled with pleasure even as his body ached. He found the tight bud of nerves at the apex of her sex and began to carefully caress it. She whimpered as her hips began to move more frantically beneath his touch. His hand was now wet as her body readied itself for him. Her heart was beating rapidly against his forearm as he captured the tip of her breast between his thumb and forefinger and gently tugged on it. She cried out, her head thrashing back and forth against his chest. “Help me.” Her plea was little more than a gasp of air as she whimpered. He could sense her conflicting emotions. Knew she had no idea what was happening to her. That he was the first to bring her to full pleasure filled him with a savage pleasure unlike any he had every experienced. Keeping his thumb pressed against her clitoris, he slipped two large fingers inside her core. The inner muscles clamped down hard, squeezing him tight. He groaned, imagining just how amazingly good it would feel when he finally took her, when it was his cock locked in her silken vise instead of his fingers. “Come for me, Eartha.” He slid his fingers almost out of her body before plunging them back in. He pressed his erection against her back, praying he wouldn’t spill his

Drakon’s Treasure
seed. The sac between his legs was hard and tight against his body, giving him clear warning that time was running out. The slow steady motion of the horse rocked them, sliding his erection over her back even as it pushed her hips toward him, allowing his fingers to go deeper within her. “Now.” He punctuated his stark command by stroking his thumb over her clitoris even as he pumped his fingers in and out of her core. Her hand grabbed his forearm, her nails digging into his skin as a low keening sound erupted from her lips. She came, her body shaking and shivering as her inner muscles convulsed around him. He kept working his fingers, trying to bring her the most pleasure he could, until finally she collapsed in his arms. Lowering his head to her shoulder, he sucked in mouthfuls of the cool night air, but nothing could douse his lust for her. Time had run out. He could only hope that she was ready for him and that she was still willing. For, the gods help him, he didn’t know if he could stop. The horse came to a halt and Arrik realized it was responding to the increased pressure from his legs around its middle. It was just as well. He’d reached the end of his tether. Gritting his teeth against the pain, he dismounted from the horse, all but dragging Eartha from its back. He gave a slap on the horse’s rump and it whinnied in complaint before disappearing into the night, the sound of its hooves growing more distant every second. A quick scan of the area and Arrik knew exactly where he was. He strode across the field toward a large formation of rocks. There was a cave there situated on the edge of a cliff that, while not perfect, would have to do. Eartha was quiet in his arms. In fact, she hadn’t said a word since she’d come. His arms automatically tightened around her. He would not, could not, let her go. Not yet. His feet easily found the path as he scanned the area, allowing all his senses to flare out into the dark area surrounding them. Other than some birds and small nocturnal animals, they were alone. His boots crunched on the loose stones as he stepped into the 21

small clearing in front of the cave. He didn’t hesitate, but kept walking, entering the dark cavern and taking her into its depths. Eartha gasped but she did not protest. Going down on one knee, he lowered her carefully to the ground. He took a moment to make sure that the two cloaks were wrapped around her before bounding to his feet and heading back toward the cave entrance. “Don’t leave me.” He whirled back toward her and saw her cringe away from him. He knew his eyes were glowing a brilliant green but he was powerless to stop it. His need for her was overpowering him, allowing the beast to come to the fore. “I am not leaving you.” He struggled to maintain control. “I will be back.” Spinning on his heels, he strode toward the entrance. He’d seen what he needed just beyond the cave.

Chapter Three Eartha felt the darkness wrap itself around her until it almost suffocated her. She slapped her hand across her mouth to keep from crying and begging Arrik not to leave her. He had said he’d be back and she had to believe him. She did believe him, and that fact frightened her. It wasn’t wise to depend on a complete stranger. But he didn’t feel like a stranger. There was a part of her that trusted him completely, that felt as if she knew him. She shook her head. Foolish thoughts like that would only bring her to grief. If she’d learned anything, it was that she could only depend on herself. When it came down to it, people always looked out for themselves. He hadn’t, a sly voice whispered. He could have easily given you up to Hameon’s men. Eartha dropped her head into her hands, ignoring the seductive voice in her head. Closing her eyes, she concentrated on each breath she took. Calm. She needed to calm herself and she needed to think. But was it any wonder her wits were scattered? Her mind and body were still reeling from the explosion of pleasure that she’d just experienced at Arrik’s hands. She’d never felt anything like it. Not even the bawdy stories of some of the other female slaves had prepared her for this. Leaning back against the cold stone wall, she wrapped her arms around her legs and cautiously opened her eyes. The dark wasn’t quite so dense now that her eyes were more accustomed to the cave. Some of the light from the moon was trickling in through the entrance. She strained her ears to hear the sounds from the outside, trying to locate Arrik. Her arms tightened around her legs until the muscles began to hurt. She struggled not to cry. What if he’d really just left her there? After all, he had no obligation to her at all.

She swallowed a cry of relief when she heard the scrape of his boots against the rock. She knew the moment he entered the cave. His bulk blocked out what small amount of light there was, but it was more than that. The air was more alive now that he was here. She could hear something rustle and then a loud snap, but she couldn’t quite make out what he was doing. A spark flickered in the air and then flames shot across the cave. Eartha cried out, covering her eyes as the light momentarily blinded her. The acrid smell of sulfur stung her nostrils, followed by the familiar crackle of wood burning. When she lowered her hands from her face, a fire was burning cheerily in the center of the chamber, its flames giving off a much-needed light. Arrik was standing beyond the fire staring at her. She could feel his eyes caress her body from head to foot as if he was actually physically touching her. Her lower body tightened and her breasts began to ache. All her doubts and fears dissolved. For the first time in her life, Eartha wanted a man. And in some strange twist of fate, he seemed to want her too. But more than that, he had a care for her. She didn’t fool herself into thinking it was more than a man who was in need of a willing woman, but no man had ever taking such pains to bring her pleasure. Placing her hand on the ground next to her, she slowly pushed herself to her feet. Her legs were shaky, but she locked her knees as she met his unswerving gaze. “I want you. Now.” His voice was deep and gruff. “I have waited too long and cannot be slow.” She could sense his agitation as he took a step back into the shadows. It was unnerving that she could only make out the outline of his large body and see the glowing green of his eyes. “If you want me to go, say so now. Once I start there is no stopping.” Shock froze Eartha where she stood. No man had ever given her a choice before. Yet this man—a Drakon lord, a fierce warrior, more beast than man, a legend in her world—was allowing her that right. He could take without thought or consequence.

Drakon’s Treasure
There was no one to stop him, no one to protest. In truth, she was a slave with no rights, a spoil of war, his to do with as he chose. Yet he gave her a choice. “I will leave you.” He strode toward the entrance and she could sense his disappointment and anger, but more than that, she could feel his hurt. She found her voice just before he disappeared into the night. “Don’t go.” Arrik came to an abrupt halt, but did not turn back. “Be sure.” His voice was more of a growl and it sent a shiver down her spine. But she had made her choice and would stand by it. Her feet made no sound as she went to him and placed her hand against his back. The muscles beneath her palm were as hard as steel. “I’m sure.” He turned and scooped her into his arms in a blur of movement and carried her back toward the fire. Lowering her legs to the floor of the cave, he stripped his cloak from her and laid it on the ground. Her cloak followed, leaving her clad only in her rough, homespun dress, open to her waist. Her bare toes curled into the hard dirt floor. Arrik stepped back from her, grabbed the tails of his shirt and yanked it over his head. His eyes glowed with lust as he watched her. She’d seen that look many times in Hameon’s eyes. But instead of the disgust that usually filled her, this time she could feel her own desire rising within her. She would experience the gut-wrenching pleasure he’d brought her with his hands, but this time he would be a part of her. Arrik was not handsome, but rather exotic with an earthy quality that surrounded him. He had an animal magnetism that would attract any woman he wanted. The intricate tattoo that covered half of his face extended downward over his neck, bisecting his chest and extending down his left arm. In the firelight, she could see that it even wrapped around his fingers. His hair was a deep rich brown and hung straight past his shoulders, framing his strong face. There was no softness to be found there. His chest was impossibly wide and roped with bands of muscles.

His biceps rippled as he reached down and pulled off one boot and then the other, tossing them both behind him. When his hands went to the waistband of his leather pants, she swallowed hard. The outline of his cock was prominently displayed against the tight fabric, making her aware of just how much bigger he was than Hameon. While her mind argued that she couldn’t possible take him inside her, her body swayed toward him. A gush of warmth came from between her legs and she shifted from one foot to the other but could find no way comfortable to stand. His fingers made quick work of the leather ties and he shoved his pants off, stepped out of them and kicked them aside. It was then that Eartha discovered that the tattoo did indeed cover half of his entire body. As she studied it, she realized that it was the coils of a large serpent that wound its way down his torso and legs. And the legends were true. Even his toes bore the design. The tattoo in no way detracted from his looks. Totally naked, he stood in front of her with his legs braced slightly apart. His legs were muscular and as wide as tree trunks, but it was what was between his legs that captured her full attention. His erection, long and thick, flexed beneath her gaze, the head extending forward as if reaching for her. Eartha’s hands were trembling as she pushed the fabric of her dress from her shoulders, allowing it to fall from her body. Before her courage could desert her, she stepped out of it and kicked it aside. Now, just as bare as him, she raised her eyes and extended her hand to him. “Take down your hair.” She drew back her hand and pulled the tail of her braid over her shoulder, unwinding it. He stepped toward her and she had to fight the instinct to step away from him. He was so huge, he seemed to suck all the air from the space around them. Reaching out his hand, he touched her hair, rubbing a lock between this thumb and forefinger. “It’s so soft.” She could hear the pleasure in his voice and ducked her head, not quite sure how to respond. He cupped her chin with his palm and used his thumb to tilt up her chin. His erection was hard against her stomach and she could feel the wetness from the head 26

coat her skin. The cave was cool, but the fire and her own arousal heated her as she waited to see what he would do next. His thumb brushed her bottom lip and she parted her lips to allow him better access. He didn’t smile, but she could sense his satisfaction. Eartha closed her eyes as he lowered his head toward her. Unlike the hard, punishing kiss she was accustomed to, Arrik’s kiss was as light as a breath of wind as his lips skimmed hers. She stood on her toes, trying to deepen the contact between them. As if that was the signal he was waiting for, he increased the pressure of his mouth as his tongue briefly flicked inside her mouth. Eartha gasped as heat shot through her body. Her sex pulsed and ached and her breasts throbbed. Without thought, she wrapped her hands around his neck and drew his head closer to her. His tongue swept into her mouth then, seeking hers, and the moment their tongues touched, she knew that it was different. His tongue was longer, rougher and the end seemed sharper, as if it were forked like a snake’s. It startled her, reminding her starkly that Arrik was more than a mere man. Then he stroked the inside of her mouth and she forgot everything but the pleasure washing over her. Arrik’s hands slid down over her neck and she gasped as he abruptly tore his mouth from hers. His frown was fierce as he tilted her head up and examined the leather-covered iron collar wrapped around her neck. It was locked in the front and only Hameon had the key. “What is this?” “I would have thought that was obvious, my lord.” Shame filled her, making her reply sharp. “It’s a slave collar.” Fury rolled off him in waves and the fire next to them leapt into the air. Eartha was very afraid that her caustic reply had angered him, but she would not back down from him. Her days of bending to any man were over. She forced herself not to flinch when his hand came toward her, bracing her body for the beating that was sure to come. But his hand did not touch her at all. Instead, his fingers wrapped around the lock and squeezed tight. Metal exploded between his 27

fingers as it all but crumbled to dust. While she was still stunned, Arrik removed the cursed collar and flung it into the fire. “You are slave no more.” Eartha could only stare up at him in wonder. Raising her hand to her neck, she carefully rubbed it. She had prayed for this day for years, longed for it for what seemed like a lifetime. She opened her mouth to thank him, but his next words halted the thanks before it spilled out of her mouth. “On your hands and knees. I want you now.”
Arrik could barely contain the rage flowing through his veins. Coupled with the lust surging through his body, he was in a volatile state. The beast within him was beating within his mind and body and he knew he had to claim Eartha. The sight of the slave collar around her neck was an abomination and a score that would need to be settled. But not now. Now he had to have her beneath him, accepting his body into hers. He could sense her apprehension, but he had no patience left to calm her. She had made her choice and now must live with the consequences. She licked her lips and he groaned as he followed the route of her wet, pink tongue. Relief and anticipation filled him as she stepped onto the makeshift bed and lowered her body to the ground. Turning onto her hands and knees, she lowered her head and waited. Arrik could not control the roar of pleasure that rumbled up from deep within him. It echoed through the cave, bouncing off the walls and surrounding them. Eartha flinched, but she didn’t move. He fell to his knees behind her, making a space for himself between her spread legs. Lowering himself over her back, he placed his hands on the ground next to hers so that his body totally covered hers, his cock nestled against the small of her back. His! He could feel his body beginning to change and fought his own nature. His spine rippled and crackled, but he prevailed, retaining the shape of a man. He wanted to
28
Drakon’s Treasure
touch her all over, taste her sweet flesh, but there was no time for that. This time was for claiming. The next would be for exploration. He nipped at the back of her neck and dragged his tongue down the length of her spine as he sat back between her spread legs. She was too thin, but that would change. He stilled, reminding himself that she was not his to keep. Now that she had her freedom, she would not wish to tie herself to one such as he. His hands caressed her sides as he shifted them to her waist. He could feel the raised lines on her flesh, evidence of the beatings she had lived through. His head threatened to explode as the image of her cowering as some unknown man beat her into submission burned into his brain. It took all his willpower to douse his anger, push it from his mind and concentrate on the here and now. Eartha trembled slightly as he settled behind her. He pushed his swollen cock through her legs, letting it slide along the wet folds of her cunt, coating his length with the evidence of her arousal. Pulling his hips back, he dragged his erection over her sex again, making sure he stroked her clitoris, wanting to bring her pleasure. Her moan was the sweetest sound he’d ever heard. More beautiful than the song of the morning birds of the mountain that sang to him each morning. Her bottom moved back against him, seeking his touch. Slipping his hands from her waist, he stroked upward, feeling her slender torso beneath his palms as he continued toward her breasts. Cupping the firm mounds in his hand, he teased her nipples with his thumbs. The flames from the fire warmed him, but the heat of his arousal burned though his body. He could feel a sheen of sweat cover his body as he inserted the tip of his erection just inside her moist slit. Her inner muscles gripped the head of his cock as if urging it deeper. Groaning, he surged forward, stopping when he felt the tight resistance of her body. He was larger than most and needed to go slow. At least at first.

But that was easier said than done. His lust, too long allowed to build, was now uncontrollable. “Take me, Eartha.” Command or plea, he didn’t know. He only knew he wanted her to willingly accept all of him. He could feel her trying to relax, even pushing her lush behind back toward him. The knowledge that she was trying to accept him gave him some much-needed control. Keeping one hand on her breast, he moved the other to her stomach and began to rock back and forth on his knees, pushing his cock deeper with every forward motion. Her body gradually began to accept him and when he buried himself to the hilt, he tipped back his head and roared again. The sound was still reverberating around them as he pulled back and began to thrust. He began slowly at first, but gradually his hips began to slam into her. His thrusts were so powerful that, if not for his hold on her, she would have slid half across the cave. Her cunt was like the softest of silks, tightening around him, welcoming him. He slid the hand on her stomach lower, sifting through her pubic hair and finding her clitoris with his questing fingers. The sac between his legs was so tight against his body it bordered on painful. His cock began to spasm and he knew he could not hold back his lust any longer. “Come for me,” he gritted out between clenched teeth as he continued to pound into her. “Now.” One final stroke and his cock exploded. He emptied himself in her, spewing his seed deep within her. His orgasm seemed to trigger hers and she convulsed in his arms, her cries mingling with his own shout of completion. It seemed to go on forever as her body tightened around him, milking every last drop of his desire from him. He dropped his head between her shoulders, gasping for breath. In his hundreds of years of existence, he’d never felt anything like this in his life. No woman had ever fit him so well or matched his desires so completely. The urge to spirit her away and keep her as his own was overwhelming, but he knew he would not do it. To watch her gentle acceptance of him turn to hate would destroy him. She moaned when he withdrew from her body. Although she’d just sated his lust, it was already growing again. But he would not take her again this night. She would be 30

too tender and sore. But tomorrow morning…he allowed that thought to fade as Eartha collapsed facedown on top of the cloaks. Arrik frowned, wishing he’d taken her to his home where a comfortable bed awaited. She deserved soft furs against her skin, not rough fabric. Putting his hands beneath her, he carefully tugged her into his arms. Her eyes were closed, but a tiny smile played on her lips. She didn’t open her eyes, but snuggled closer to him. Cradling her tight, he yanked her cloak from the ground and lay down on top of his. He settled on the ground with Eartha draped over his body and spread her cloak over them both. It wasn’t nearly long enough to cover him, but the cold didn’t affect him the same as it would her. Making sure she was protected from the night air as best as was possible, he closed his eyes, enjoying the weight of her slight body on top of him. She made a wonderful blanket. The corner of his mouth tipped upward at the thought. He wondered what she’d think of that if he told her. Arrik wanted to spend hours talking to Eartha, learning about her, and sharing his world with her. But he knew his time with her was limited. His arms tightened reflexively around her and she moaned, shifting slightly. Forcing himself to relax his hold, he held his breath, not wanting to wake her from her slumber. She was obviously worn out from the physical and emotional events of the day. She rubbed her cheek against his chest and sighed deeply as he smoothed his hand up and down her back. When she finally settled back into a deep sleep, he allowed his hand to settle on the curve of her hip, keeping their bodies close. With his other hand cradling her head to his chest, he closed his eyes and slept.

Chapter Four Arrik’s eyes snapped open and he bit back a roar of anger. Eartha was still sound asleep, her body draped across his chest, but time had run out. He’d hoped to awaken her gradually, rousing her desires as she woke. But that was not to be. Riders were rapidly approaching from the east. He could feel the vibration of the horses’ hooves against the hard-packed ground. He’d known that he’d have to deal with this problem sooner or later, but he’d been hoping for later. Sighing, he leaned down and kissed the top of her head before shaking her gently. “You must awaken, little one, we have company.” “Mmph,” she huffed as she snuggled deeper against his chest. A reluctant smile tugged at his mouth as he shook her again. “Eartha, you must wake now.” She tilted her head upward and opened one eye. A lock of her long black hair fell over her face and she huffed out a breath to try and move it. Arrik smoothed the hair out of her face, reveling in its softness. He longed to feel its length stroked over his entire body. His cock, which had already been semi-erect, began to stir. “Why?” It took Arrik a moment to remember what he’d said to her, so bewitched was he by the softness in her eyes and the smile on her face. “Riders are fast approaching.” Her sleepy, sated look fled to be replaced by one of abject terror as she scrambled from his body. Grabbing her dress from the floor, she hurriedly pulled it on, struggling to fasten the leather ties in the front. Fury fired Arrik’s blood that the riders had the power to steal her contentment and pleasure from her. He rose, not bothering to dress. There was no need.
32

Striding toward her, he gripped her shoulders in his hands. “Stay inside. I will deal with this.” “I have brought this on you.” She bit her lip so hard she drew blood. “Hameon has come to recapture me and drag me back with him. He will kill anyone who gets in his way.” Her beautiful eyes were filled with sadness. “I cannot allow him to hurt you.” Surging forward, she all but threw herself at him, wrapping her arms around his waist and hugging him tight. “I could not bear for harm to come to you. I will surrender myself to them.” Arrik was stunned at her selfless words. No one in all the centuries of his existence had ever been concerned about his safety. He was a Drakon lord. Others looked to him for protection, never worrying about him. He was a warrior and a beast of unparalleled power. But this slight, beautiful woman, in her ragged and worn dress, with no possessions to her name, would give herself back into slavery to a cruel master just to protect him. He felt his heart swell in his chest as unfamiliar emotions swamped him. He felt unworthy of her sacrifice and devotion. It was the most precious gift that he’d ever been given. He framed her face with his hands and stared down into her pale face, her eyes filled with both determination and fear. “Thank you.” The words seemed inadequate for the sacrifice she was willing to make for him. She reached up, tangled her fingers in his hair and tugged his face down to hers. Her lips covered his in a kiss that was sweet and light, yet filled with tenderness and caring. “Thank you, Arrik, for showing me what true pleasure between a man and a woman should be.” Releasing her grip on him, she stepped away, squared her shoulders and started to march toward the opening. He reached out a long arm, snagged her around the waist and pulled her back against him. Leaning down, he whispered in her ear. “I will deal with this. You will stay inside the cave.” 33
N.J. Walters
The vein in her temple throbbed as she shook her head. In spite of the seriousness of the moment, Arrik felt the overwhelming need to laugh. No one gainsaid him. Ever. No one, that is, but this incredibly brave yet fragile woman in his arms. “You will do as I say.” His voice was harsh, brooking no disobedience. He did not wait to see what her reply would be, but stepped back from her and allowed the beast within him full rein. His body immediately began to shift and change. His spine cracked as wings began to emerge. Eartha covered her mouth with her hand and shrank back against the far wall of the cave. Arrik ignored her reaction and focused on the upcoming confrontation. As his body grew, his skin changed. Green scales emerged from beneath his flesh, each one overlapping the one next to it and providing him with protection from his foes. His jaw elongated, the bones snapping and reforming, as his face became that of a dragon. Only his eyes were the same brilliant green they’d been before. It was over in mere seconds, the shape of the beast as familiar as that of the man. He was neither. He was both. “You will stay here.” His voice was much deeper and her eyes widened in fear as she nodded jerkily. Arrik turned his back on her and headed to the entrance of the cave. Time had run out and the riders were upon them. Stepping out into the brilliant sunlight of the morning, he positioned himself in front of the opening, and settled back on his haunches. He counted twenty horses with mounted warriors as they broke through the tree line. Many of the animals reared with fright when they saw him. Men swore and brutally brought their beasts back under control as they moved more cautiously toward him. A large man with a heavily decorated shield rode at the forefront of the group. Arrogance and cruelty had left their marks on him. Arrik narrowed his eyes as he focused on the obvious leader of the group, and took the offensive. “Why do you come here?”
34
Drakon’s Treasure
The man reined in his horse and raised an eyebrow at him, obviously not used to being challenged. “I am looking for something that belongs to me.” “Again, I ask, why do you come here?” Irritation filled the leader’s face and his lips thinned in disapproval. “The slave is mine.” He paused and a sly look entered his eyes. “I care not if you used her. Count it as a favor from me to you. But she is mine and I will have her back.” “Who are you to demand anything of me?” Arrik kept his voice mild, burying his anger deep inside him. “Hameon of Gradoc, my lord.” There was a sneer beneath his formal words. “No doubt you’ve heard of the mighty kingdom of Gradoc,” he boasted. “I do not concern myself with trivial matters,” Arrik snorted in disgust. “The matter at hand is the woman.” He narrowed his gaze on Hameon before sweeping the entire group with his cold green-eyed gaze. “She is mine and any who seek to take her from me are my enemy.” His warning was clear. “Think long and hard before you act. If by chance you did defeat me, then you become my brothers’ enemies as well.” It was well known that although dragons kept to themselves, if you attacked one, all would answer the call. The men behind Hameon shifted nervously, sending each other uneasy glances. Arrik sensed their uncertainty and knew victory was at hand. If they attacked him as a group, they had an outside chance of beating him, but a smaller group he could annihilate without breaking a sweat. He sensed Eartha creeping up behind him and swore inwardly. He should have known she wouldn’t stay where he told her to. She was far too stubborn and brave for his peace of mind. He only hoped she stayed in the relative safety of the cave until this was over. Like a man gone slightly mad, Hameon was beyond all rational thought. “The woman is mine,” he roared, spittle flying from his mouth. “I will kill you, dragon, and when I am finished with her, I will kill her too.” With sword drawn, he charged Arrik.
35

But Arrik did not move a muscle. Just as the horse and rider were within striking distance, he swept out his long, muscular tail. The sound was like the snap of a loud whip and mingled with the yells of both rider and horse as they were swept into the air and over the side of the cliff. Their screams echoed off the side of the mountain before being abruptly cut off. The silence was thick around them. The horses shifted restlessly beneath their riders and Arrik turned to face the man he recognized from the tavern. “Proctor, are you an intelligent man?” “My lord?” He eyed Arrik quizzically. “With Hameon dead, who will lead his men, own his home, claim his wealth?” He could see the growing understanding in Proctor’s face, see the greedy gleam in his eyes. “A smart man would be able to claim it for his own.” His voice deepened as he allowed the first traces of his anger to show. “But a dead man can claim nothing.” Proctor backed up slightly, moving farther away from Arrik. “But what about the woman?” Arrik eyed the man, wondering if greed made all humans inherently stupid. He wanted this matter settled once and for all. “You will sell her to me.” He could see the growing calculation in Proctor’s eyes and sent him a warning. “Do not try my patience.” “No, my lord.” The calculation was quickly replaced by fear. “Wait here.” Arrik swung around and ducked low, squeezing himself into the cave and herding Eartha back toward its center. She held a small dagger clutched tight in her hand and he recognized it as one he kept tucked in his boot. He cocked his head questioningly to one side. “To protect you if necessary, my lord.” Arrik shook his head at her and continued to the back of the cave. He’d deal with her after he got rid of the men. It only took him seconds to unearth his stash. All dragons kept the bulk of treasure in their homes, but most had small stashes

throughout their domain. As a mountain dragon, he knew all the caves and caverns around. He didn’t look at Eartha as he made his way back out of the cave where the men were waiting impatiently. “You are all witness that the woman has been sold to me. She is mine.” He tossed a small purse toward Proctor, who caught it easily out of midair. Arrik was no fool. He knew that humans loved the glitter and gleam of gold and jewels and had provided Proctor with enough to buy two dozen slaves or more. “We are done.” Proctor opened the purse and checked the contents, his eyes widening as his head snapped up to meet Arrik’s gaze. “Aye, my lord. We are done.” He tucked the purse inside his shirt and whirled his horse around. “To home,” he shouted. All the men gave Arrik one final look of awe before following him. As the sound of their horses faded, he sensed Eartha behind him. “Thank you, my lord.” She fell to her knees in front of him and bowed her head. “I belong to you now.” The earth trembled with the force of Arrik’s bellow. Fire shot from his mouth, scorching the mountainside and burning away the shrubs and small plants that had managed to take hold between the rocks. Fury whipped through him. How dare she say such a thing! But Eartha had not moved from her position, nor did she cringe in fear. Instead, she raised her head and met his gaze squarely. There was a quiet acceptance and pride in her demeanor. He noted that her face was smudged with dirt, and her clothing was in desperate need of cleaning, but he’d never seen a more beautiful sight in his life. He knew what he had to do. Lumbering over to stand in front of her, he dropped the second pouch he’d taken from his stash and dropped it at her feet. “This is yours. You are free.” A frown formed between her brows as she reached down and picked up the pouch. Opening it, she spilled the contents onto the ground. Gold and precious stones littered the ground around her. There was more than enough for her to live comfortably for 37

several lifetimes. Her fingers traced several of the stones before she looked back up at him. “I don’t understand.” Arrik wished she would take the treasure and go. The pain within him was almost crippling. The dragon was screaming at him to take her back to his lair and keep her there for all time. That she was his true mate and belonged to him. But his human heart knew he could not take her newfound freedom from her. “There is nothing to understand. Take your money and go.” He turned his back to her, gritting his jaw against the pain. He heard her scramble to her feet and then something struck him in the back. He flung himself around and had to duck to avoid being struck in the face by a large ruby. “I told you I am no whore!” she screamed as she pelted him with heavy pieces of gold, which bounced off his thick scales. “I know you are no whore!” he roared back. “You are stubborn and infuriating and brave and courageous…” he trailed off as his anger died as quickly as it had begun. Weariness began to play upon him. “You are free.” He could stay here no longer. His heart felt as if it were being ripped from his chest. Turning, he lumbered toward the forest. “Don’t you want me?” Her softly whispered words stopped him cold, lancing him with pain. Not want her! Not want her! How could she even think such a thing? Didn’t she know what torture this was for him? The truth was like a blinding flash of light. Of course she didn’t know. He’d never told her. Forcing himself to relax, he concentrated on changing. His bones snapped and reformed, his internal organs reshaped themselves. In the harsh light of the morning, Eartha could see it all clearly. It was better if she saw him for what he truly was. Hiding nothing, he turned to face her in the form of a man once again. She stood within feet of him, her long hair blowing in the breeze, more beautiful than any of the jewels scattered around them. “I want you more than any man or beast 38

has ever wanted their mate. You fill all the lonely places within me. I want you in my bed each night. I want to share my world with you each day. I want you to walk by my side in the long centuries to come.” Her jaw had dropped and she clasped her chest with her hand, but she said nothing. So he continued, baring his soul to her. “I would have you as mine, my Dragon Lady. But you have been enslaved for years and have just been given your freedom. You deserve to live and to love a man of your own kind, not a man who is more beast than human.” She licked her lush pink lips with her tongue and his body stirred at the sight. He did nothing to hide his growing arousal from her. He was not ashamed of his desire for her. “I would stay with you,” she spoke tentatively. “I do not want your pity or gratitude.” He clenched his fists at his sides to keep from reaching out and grabbing her into his arms. The sun was hot against his skin and his lust for her was burning inside him. He wanted to sweep her to the ground and fuck her, marking her so that she would never, ever forget him. “I am grateful to you, but I do not pity you.” She took several steps toward him. “I know that we barely know each other, but somehow I know you.” She thumped her chest with her closed hand for emphasis. “My instincts have kept me alive for years while others have died. I trust them.” Unable to stop himself, the question poured from his lips. “And what do your instincts tell you?” Offering him a gentle smile, she closed the distance between them and placed her small hand over his heart. “That I will never find another man as good as you if I search the entire world for the rest of my days. That you fill the dark spaces within me and bring me light. That you will protect me and keep me safe.” He closed his eyes, and swallowed back the lump in his throat. It was as he’d feared. What she felt was gratitude. But she was not done yet. “That you will love me as much as I have come to love you.” 39

His eyes snapped open and they narrowed. “Do not tease me, Eartha.” She shook her head, obviously exasperated by him. “Man or beast, you are stubborn.” Smiling at him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and tugged his head down to hers. “We can work on that.” But the smile faded as she stared deep into his eyes. “I love you, Arrik, and I want to be with you for as many years as I have left to live.” Catching her up in his arms, he buried his face in the sweet curve of her neck, holding her as tightly as he dared. He did not want to hurt her, but he wanted no space between them. The sincerity in her eyes and words shone through as bright as the morning sun. He held her until she began to squirm in his embrace. Slowly, he lowered her feet back to the ground. Picking up the discarded pouch, he gathered all the gold and jewels, chuckling when she shot him a questioning glance. “I am a dragon, little one. You cannot expect me to leave treasure behind.” Her sweet laughter surrounded him as she helped him gather the rest. When it was done, he held out his hand to her. “Let’s go home.” She didn’t hesitate as she placed her hand in his and walked beside him.

Drakon’s Treasure
Chapter Five Eartha’s heart pounded and exhilaration filled her as she dismounted from Arrik’s back. She had just ridden a dragon. She stifled a giggle. He’d ridden her last night, so maybe it was only fair. She pinched herself, not quite able to believe how much her life had changed in the past few days. The huge oak and steel door towered above her and she knew there was no way she could move such a heavy thing. She held her curiosity in check as Arrik shapeshifted and easily pushed the door wide. He strode forward, totally unconcerned by the fact that he was naked. He’d simply left his clothing bundled behind in the cave. It was amazing how quickly she’d gotten used to seeing him shift. It no longer seemed strange or frightening. It was just another part of him and she freely admitted that she found both sides of him equally fascinating. Eyes wide, she tried to take in the luxuriousness of her surroundings as he tugged her through several large rooms toward the back of the cave. He paused only to light several lanterns, using his own breath to ignite the flame. Eartha was enthralled. Everywhere she looked there was sumptuous fabrics, beautifully carved furniture and every amenity. This might be a cave, but it resembled the interior of a castle. Pushing aside a door-hanging made of precious gems that glittered in the light, Arrik tugged her into what was obviously his bedroom. Several elaborate chests and wardrobes were positioned against the walls, but it was the gigantic bed that captured her attention. Gauzy fabric hung around it, all but obscuring the interior, but she could see soft furs piled high on the mattress. “Did you mean what you said?” He moved around the room, lighting one candle after another until the room was bathed in soft light.

His voice was filled with such longing that she turned all her attention to him. There would be plenty of time to examine her new home. “I meant everything I said,” she assured him. “But what specifically do you mean?” His face appeared even harsher and a muscle twitched just below his right eye. “That you wanted to be with me for whatever years you have left?” “Yes.” There was no hesitation. She knew what she wanted. “What if I told you that you could live longer?” He paused and clenched his fists at his sides. “It is not fair for me to ask because the process is painful and your beautiful skin would be marked for life, but I can share my longevity with you.” “Yes.” At this point Eartha didn’t care what was involved. If anything her answer had made him even more tense. “You don’t know what’s involved.” He raked his fingers through his hair. “I will have to hurt you, Eartha. And then you will be tied to me for as long as we both shall live. You will never be able to leave me. You will be chained to me forever, as surely as you were chained to Hameon.” Eartha shook her head. “You cannot even think to compare yourself to that monster. You worry about me feeling any kind of pain, yet he lived to hurt others.” Pulling open the ties to her dress, she slipped it of her shoulders and stepped free of the fabric. “I know you felt them.” She turned and offered him her back. “But look and truly see what my life was like before.” She heard his deep intake of breath and felt him move closer to her. His touch was gently as he traced every scar on her back. “If he were not already dead, I would seek him out and kill him.” Eartha blinked back the tears that threatened to spill out of her eyes. No one had ever made her feel the way Arrik did. “Then you know I tell you truth when I say that I care not what you have to do. I trust you not to hurt me any more than is necessary to see this done.” She turned to face him, reaching up her hands to capture his face. “I love you, my Drakon lord, and I

would have whatever time we can together. And if suffering a little pain will give us more time, then so be it.” He scooped her off her feet and carried her straight to the bed, carefully placing her in the center before stretching out beside her. His fingers lightly traced the contours of her face as he studied her intently. “Fear not, my lord. All will be well.” For the first time since she’d met him, he smiled and Eartha forgot how to breathe. It changed his features completely and she was held spellbound by him. It was if some internal light shone from his eyes and she was caught in their tender rays. He was simply the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. Then he lowered his head toward her breast. “Breathe, little one,” he chuckled. Eartha sucked in a deep breath as he captured the turgid peak between his lips, sucking gently and drawing her deeper into his mouth. His fingers traced the curve of her neck before continuing downward over the slope of her breast, and over her torso. Moving down her body, he left a trail of kisses as he meandered toward her stomach. Fisting her hands in the bedcovers, she tried to find her bearings. But it was impossible. It was if he was trying to touch every inch of her body. She wasn’t sure she’d survive long enough for him to finish. Already her body was crying out for release. His tongue swirled around the indentation of her bellybutton before he shifted downward and settled between her thighs. “The smell of your growing desire is arousing,” he whispered as he placed openmouthed kisses on her thighs. “But it will taste even better.” His tongue, his exquisite tongue, swept up one side of her sex and down the other, teasing her with its roughness. Then he slipped it inside her. Her cries soon filled the room as she bucked her hips against him. His tongue was long and he touched places deep inside her core that made her scream with delight.

A finger soon replaced his tongue, which swirled along the swollen folds before wrapping itself around her clitoris. Then another finger joined the first as he pumped them in and out of her body, bringing her ever closer to the edge of madness. Digging her heels into the mattress, she arched her lower body toward him, wanting to feel him everywhere, wanting him deeper, wanting only him. She swore she saw stars when she exploded, her body convulsing as waves of pleasure drenched her. When she finally dropped back against the bed, sinking into its depths, she felt sleepy and sated and almost giddy with happiness. Arrik rolled up beside her and lay flat on his back, one arm flung over his face. She stared at him, amazed at how giving he was. His cock was hard, moisture dripping from the tip, yet he made no move to take her. Reaching out her hand, she tentatively stroked his length. He was so hard, yet his skin was soft. He groaned and shifted his arm so that he could see her. “It has to be your choice.” His voice was almost unrecognizable now and she knew that he was fighting the animal half of himself. “If you want to become my wife, my Dragon Lady, you must mount me and take me into your body willingly.” Eartha was on her hands and knees before he was finished speaking. She was definitely willing. More than willing. Throwing one leg over his body, she positioned herself so that she was straddling his upper thighs. Unable to resist, she traced a finger down the pulsing vein in his cock. “Eartha,” he gritted out between clenched teeth. This was obviously not the time to tease her beast. Levering herself up on her knees, she captured his erection in her hand and positioned herself so that the head slipped just inside her slit. “I willingly take your body into mine.” She sat down hard, driving him deep. He was so large and her inner muscles were still swollen so it was more difficult than she expected. But she was determined. Rocking back and forth, she took him deeper with each downward plunge until he was buried to the hilt. Eartha hardly dared 44

to breathe, she felt so filled by him. The sensation bordered on pain, but there was also incredible pleasure. Arrik sat up straight. “Wrap your legs around me.” It was hard, but she managed to get first one leg then the other around his waist, locking her ankles together at the small of his back. Even though she’d been sure he was buried as deep as he could go, the slight change of position drove him further. Eartha groaned and he froze. She could almost hear his thoughts. “Don’t you dare stop.” She gripped his shoulders for support, could feel her nails digging into his flesh. His eyes flashed a brilliant green and then she heard the now-familiar cracking noise as his body began to change. But it was different this time. The man remained, but the dragon’s wings appeared behind him. “This will hurt.” Once again, she sensed his reluctance to do anything to bring her pain and his need to give her one final chance to change her mind. “I don’t care.” Leaning forward, she buried her face in his neck and waited. The wings fluttered and folded forward, enveloping them in a private cocoon. The scales were rough against her back, shoulders and upper arms as they molded against her. Arrik’s hold tightened. “I love you, Eartha.” Her entire body bowed backward as small needles pierced her flesh wherever his wings touched her. She bit her lip to keep from crying out, knowing that this was harder on Arrik than her. Her entire body felt as if it was on fire, her internal organs burning up inside her. She lost all track of time, but gradually the pain dissipated even though his wings still surrounded her. She could feel the pulsing of his cock deep in her core and her own desire suddenly spiked. Moaning, she tried to move, but was unable to. He tilted her face up to meet his. “You are mine now. Forever.” Once those words would have filled her with dread, but now they filled her with incredible joy. Leaning forward, she kissed his lips. “You are mine now. Forever.” She

repeated his words back to him, loving the way they sounded as they rolled off her tongue. Arrik captured her lips in a searing kiss as he wrapped his hands around her waist and began to shift her up and down on his straining erection. His tongue fucked her mouth as his cock fucked her body. With his large wings around them, nothing existed but them. His thrusts got harder. Deeper. Eartha tore herself from his kiss, gasping for air. Her entire body was clenched tight. She was so close. Arrik was half crazed with need, plunging harder and faster. Her hands slipped from his shoulders, which were coated in a fine sweat. Screaming, she came. Her cunt clenched around him like a vise and she felt his release, hot and deep, as he emptied himself inside her. Spasms shook them both as they clutched each other for support. She shivered as a cold gust of wind hit her damp body and raised her head long enough to see Arrik’s wings retracting and disappearing behind him. Slumping against his chest, she burrowed closer for warmth. He muttered an oath as he carefully lifted her. She couldn’t suppress her groan as his cock slipped from her body. Gathering her into his arms, he yanked some of the furs over them. Grateful for the warmth, she laid her hand on his chest. It was all she had the strength to do. It felt intimate and right to lie here together. Eartha nuzzled her face against him, decided that she could easily get used to this when something caught the corner of her eye. Turning her head, she frowned and slowly sat up. The furs slipped off her body and settled around her waist. Her upper arms were covered in a green pattern that was very familiar. Peering over her shoulder as far as she could, she saw the same green pattern. Beside her, Arrik hadn’t moved. “It’s a tattoo, isn’t it? Like yours?”

“Yes.” He sat up abruptly, turning so that the marked side of his body faced her. “The claiming marks you as mine, even as it shares my longevity with you. We are tied together forever.” Eartha could sense he expected anger from her and sighed. Arrik had no idea just how amazing he was and just how much she loved him. But he would learn. She would teach him. Suddenly a thought occurred to her. “I only get tattooed once?” He nodded solemnly. Surprising him, she climbed into his arms, curling into his body. His arms automatically closed around her, sheltering her next to his massive chest. “Now everyone will know that we belong together.” Picking up his hand, she laid it over her heart. “I love you, Arrik, both man and beast.”
Arrik held the greatest treasure he’d ever owned in his arms, and as everyone knew, a dragon always guarded its treasure well. Eartha was a miracle to him. Contentment filled him and for the first time in his life he felt peace. As she snuggled closer, he brushed a lock of her long dark hair from her face, enjoying its softness. But he wasn’t stupid. He would probably wait a few years before he told her that the tattoo on her back was actually scripted in the old language of his people, proclaiming her as his. With her still clasped tight in his embrace, he stretched back out on the bed and drifted off to sleep.
