Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle
Chapter One “Her cry would wake the dead.” “Shh...” Cheyenne Logan glanced over her shoulder and, with a smile, whispered, “So that’s why you huddled under the covers when the monitor picked up her crying?” She placed their sleeping daughter back in the crib and slid her nightgown strap back into place. Early morning feedings wreaked havoc on her sleep, but she wouldn’t change a thing. Her husband slid his hand around her middle and up to cup her breasts. His whiskered chin rested on her shoulder as he gazed into the crib. “I didn’t have what she wanted,” he murmured by way of explanation. She chuckled softly. “Coward.” He knew as well as she did that they kept pumped breast milk in the fridge. He spun her around, making her grin. “Damn straight,” he admitted without an ounce of regret showing on his handsome face. “I’m outnumbered now and, between the two of you, I’ve already lost the battle. I’m hopelessly lost...” He kissed her forehead, the tip of her nose, and her chin, pausing to hover a breath from her grinning lips. “...in love with you both.” His kiss was slow and sensuous, deadly to her equilibrium. She wrapped her arms around his neck, running her fingers into his thick hair
4
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle even while he delved deeper into her mouth with his tongue. A soft moan escaped her throat, and he pulled back. “Shh,” he whispered with a teasing smile. She smirked. He took her hand and tilted his head toward the hallway, his silent suggestion obvious. She nodded and, pausing to pull the door almost closed, she noticed the sheer curtain flare and thought about shutting the second‐story window, but decided the morning was too pleasant. A little fresh air would keep the room from becoming too stuffy. Her husband tugged her hand, so she followed him down the hall to their bedroom. Turning around, he drew her against his chest and slow‐danced his way toward the bed, which made her chuckle. He nipped the side of her neck, spun her out in a twirl. Her chuckle transformed into a laugh at his playfulness. It wasn’t every night a girl danced with a sexy man in his briefs. She let her gaze drop over a hard abdomen to the bulge of his erect cock and felt her blood race as she reached to remove the barrier of cloth. A sudden baby’s cry. A stranger’s hiss. They both looked at the nursery monitor, alarm dousing all sense of arousal. “Stay here,” he ordered before running unarmed toward their daughter’s room. Like hell. She ran after him. Her whole body shook— “Anne! Wake up!” Cheyenne jackknifed, struggling with the bed covers—the dream, the nightmare, still fresh in her mind. “It’s not real. You were asleep,” Valerie said, trying to reassure her, but the words held no comfort. It was real. Waking to find herself in her sister‐in‐law’s spare bedroom was proof enough that her life had forever changed six years earlier. Panting, she collapsed backwards and brushed her friend’s hands

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle away. “I’m okay, Val.” “You sure?” She didn’t look convinced. Cheyenne swiped a hand over her face and discovered her brow moist and cool. She glanced at the bedside clock. Almost midnight. Damn it! She tossed back the sheets and scrambled out of bed. “You should’ve woken me up.” Valerie stepped out of the way. “I thought that’s what I just did.” “You know what I mean. The night’s half gone.” She sat, rolled to her back, and kicked both feet in the air, yanking her black cargo pants on with one quick pull. Back on her feet, she hopped from one foot to the other as she tugged on her combat boots before lacing them up. “You need a good night’s sleep and some sunlight,” Val said, giving Cheyenne’s admittedly pale form the once over as if to prove a point. “All of this nocturnal behavior isn’t good for you.” She ignored Val’s warning, finished dressing, and slid a blade in a sheath strapped to her thigh. A second knife went on her other thigh, a third in a holder under her left arm. “Why don’t you take tonight off, huh? Get some rest. Maybe spend a normal day with me and your nephews. You need it.” Cheyenne paused, thought of her brother’s boys sleeping just across the hall, and shook her head. “I can’t. You know that. If I did, more could die.” “You can’t save everyone. And you could die, too, you know.” Piqued, Val added, “It’s too soon, Anne. You can’t keep driving yourself so hard. You’re not immortal.” I’d welcome death. But not before she turned some more killers to ashes. “No, I’m not,” she admitted, thinking to herself that neither were they. “But I can’t stop, not as long as there’s breath left in my body.” If she quit now, the deaths in her family, the loss of all she’d held dear, would be for nothing. She closed her eyes, trying to loosen the knot in her gut, lessen the pain that still throbbed in her chest at the memories. Inhaling deeply, she
6
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle checked the last of her gear, grabbed her long, black jacket, and headed for the door. Val blocked her path. “Then put your experience to greater use. Use all of those speaking engagements you do to recruit others. Train them like Mark trained you. Let them go out and do the fighting.” “I tried letting someone else do this for me. Remember? And Mark died because of it.” Val’s eyes glistened at the mention of her husband’s name, but her lips thinned into a stubborn line. “You didn’t let him do anything. He fought because he didn’t want us or you harmed. He only let you go along with the video camera because he knew he couldn’t force you to stay home.” “That’s not true.” Although she denied it, she suspected part of what Val said was true. She frowned. She’d opened Mark’s eyes to the dangers that lay just inside the shadows, dangers that could touch his family as much as they had destroyed her own. He couldn’t prevent her from putting herself in harm’s way, so he’d done the same...and she’d never forgive herself for that. “He knew I could fight, that I’d have to eventually; that’s why he taught me everything he knew.” It was supposed to be safer, fighting side‐by‐side. It should’ve been... Tears slid down Val’s cheek. “He taught you so you’d have a slim chance of surviving should something go wrong. And it did go wrong.” “Exactly! I let him down...” The weight of her guilt was more than Cheyenne could bear. She broke, her tears bursting forth in heart‐broken sobs. “It’s...all...my fault!” She still didn’t understand why Val even remained a friend. She wouldn’t have blamed her brother’s widow if she’d refused all contact after the funeral. But that had never been Val’s way. “No. Shh.” Val grabbed her arm, her voice softer, more coaxing. Although Val tried to hide it, Cheyenne recognized the pain in her tone as well. “You didn’t kill Mark. A vampire did. None of this is your fault, but it is time to let it go before it destroys you. You’re the only one of his family my boys have left. Live for them.” “I can’t.” She shook her head.
7
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “You can! It’s been six years, Anne.” Cheyenne winced at Val’s use of the nickname her brother had given her, the same name her husband had always used. Six years. It still seemed like yesterday she’d lost her husband and child, as recent as her own brother’s murder...also at the hands of a monster she should’ve been strong enough to stop. “When is it going to be enough?” Never. She paused and stared at her friend, one of only two people who ever believed her after... “When every last vampire is dead, then...I can rest.” * * * * * Kieran Duboix knelt inside the small, intricately carved confessional. Bowing his head, he thumbed the golden cross that hung on a chain around his neck. “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned...a lot.” “With how many women this time, Kieran?” the priest asked from the other side of the curtain, exasperation already evident in his patronizing tone. Leave it to Father Hardwin to always cut to the chase. Kieran couldn’t prevent the smile that pulled at his lips, but he did manage to mute it enough that his fangs wouldn’t show. They weren’t fully extended—they only did that when he was feeding or aroused. Yet, even retracted his were a bit longer and sharper than normal human eyeteeth, so he practiced hiding such traits when possible. “Three, Father. It’s been...” He glanced at his watch. “...exactly twenty‐four hours since my last confession.” “You bedded three women in one night?” “They were triplets,” he said, his smile broadening into a full‐ fanged grin. “And we didn’t exactly stop at sunup.” “Your lust knows no bounds, my child. You are aware that you must be penitent to seek forgiveness of your sins?” Even though Father Hardwin was decades younger—more like
8
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle centuries younger—his use of ‘my child’ always made Kieran feel as if he were an unruly kid facing his father’s disapproving glare. Kieran took a deep breath and nodded. “I know I’m damned, but you can’t fault a vampire for trying.” He heard the priest leave the confessional. Hurrying to catch up, he matched the priest’s pace before he whispered, “I’m sorry, Father.” The priest kept walking. “We’ve all sinned, Kieran. You’re no more damned than the rest of mankind. But for the grace of God and the blood of our Lord and Savior—” “I know, Father. Forgive me. I don’t mean to make light of this at all, and I am trying to behave. It’s just... I have to retain some reason for living this long, and I can’t think of a better one than the love of a beautiful woman, or two...or three.” Father Hardwin stopped and faced him, his eyes kind yet serious. “Such lusts are not the same as love. Do not mistake one for another.” Solemn‐faced, Kieran nodded at the priest’s logic. After all, the man was right. Sex wasn’t love. Kieran didn’t doubt that, since he knew from experience that sex was pleasurable, and love was...heart‐wrenchingly painful. With a sigh, the priest took a seat in a pew and motioned for Kieran to join him. “You’ve been given a gift, my child. Do not waste it on frivolous pursuits.” “A dark gift I didn’t want,” he snapped, then immediately closed his eyes and pressed his lips together. He hadn’t meant to sound harsh. It was just very hard to see what he considered a curse as a gift of any kind. When he spoke again, his tone was softer, more pained. “I didn’t ask for this.” The aging priest patted Kieran’s hand. “It is not for me to say why God has chosen you to bear such a burden, but chose you, He did...and for good reason. Because you did not seek it, you proved yourself worthy of having it.” Fighting off the urge to shake his head, Kieran sat back and stared at the large crucifix on a nearby wall. God hadn’t chosen him on that dark
9
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle night long ago; a vampire had. “I’ve heard this all before. My soul is intact because I wasn’t greedy.” Not that he could imagine any sane person wanting to become a monster for the chance to retain a semblance of youth. “Lucky me.” He failed to hide his sarcasm. He glanced at the mortal priest, his friend. The priest and his predecessors had been Kieran’s closest confidants ever since one had found Kieran newly changed and suicidal on the steps of the church more than a century before. “That still doesn’t change the fact that I should be a corpse rotting inside a tomb instead of living to fight another day.” “Be that as it may, it’s your fight that gives the rest of us hope. Think of the many lives you’ve saved over the years…the decades.” It was an old argument—one Kieran had had with Father Hardwin’s predecessors before him. And in the early years, it had worked. Kieran had been given a reason to live as a vampire, dedicated to kill others like him who’d gone too far and let the dark lusts consume them, to prevent other humans from being forced into such a living death against their will. Not all vampires were bad. Oh, they all drank blood, but many of the myths were untrue or greatly exaggerated over time. Vampires, those like Kieran, were strong enough to control the bloodlust. They took only enough blood to sate the hunger; a few swallows from a fresh donor was usually enough to last a day or two. But some drank until the victim’s heart stopped. Legend had it— and Kieran knew for certain—that if a vampire continued to drink until the heart stopped, until the vamp tasted death, it caused a drug‐like high. A rush that was temporary but very addictive. It turned mild‐mannered vampires into cannibalistic killers called the Horde. But for a twist of fate, Kieran could’ve been one of them. Instead, he’d joined a league of fellow vampires under oath to never succumb to such a temptation. Together, they fought the Horde, their battles sheltered by the darkness of night. It was the only way to protect the human race and indirectly, the vampire one as well.
10
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Through the centuries, the war did not go unnoticed. Eventually, a small group of human witnesses discovered the truth and formed an Order tasked to assist in the control and destruction of the rogue vampire Horde. Father Hardwin, like his predecessors before him, was a member of that clandestine Order. “Come,” the priest said. “I’ve something to show you.”

Chapter Two Father Hardwin took a seat at his wooden desk, pushed a few keys on his computer, and moved the mouse. His office was small and cluttered, but in a neat and orderly manner. Evidence of the man’s more scholarly pursuits lay in stacks about the room. Kieran approached and looked over his shoulder at the screen. “What is it?” “Watch.” As he did, a black square on screen came to life, the video showing a poorly lit alley, the concrete path damp and strewn with trash. Amid the typical sounds of city traffic, faint music played, its origin close but unknown. The image moved, jostled as if the videographer held the recorder rather than using a tripod. “What—” “Patience,” the priest chided. “Here it comes.” A soft, recorded voice whispered, “Ready,” identifying the speaker as female. “Come on, you bastard. Take the bait.” Kieran narrowed his eyes, his attention captured. Curious. A drunk, layered in worn clothes with a hood up, turned the corner, stumbling against the wall. His bottle of alcohol slipped from his grasp. He’d taken several shuffling steps into the darker shadows of the alley when a silhouetted figure appeared at the end. “Vampire,” Kieran murmured. The attack was fast but did not go as expected.
12
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle The drunk wasn’t as intoxicated as he first appeared. He spun without a second to spare. In his hand, a sharp stake had replaced the bottle. The vampire’s own momentum brought him into striking range, and by then it was too late. The victim‐turned‐attacker dispatched him with a fierce and fatal thrust to the chest. A demonic wail screeched from the computer speakers, and the vampire crystallized into an orange, glowing statue of ash only to crumble as the human pulled the stake back. The feminine voice returned, the sound breathy but otherwise emotionless. “Another vampire vanquished.” “Where’d you get this? Who is that?” Kieran asked, taking a seat to the side of the desk. “It’s one of many such videos that have been posted to the Internet in recent years by a blogger—” “You read blogs?” The priest raised one eyebrow. “I am not so ancient that I cannot adapt to new technology. Now pay attention. The blogger claims to be the one recording evidence of vampires.” “The woman.” Father Hardwin nodded. “She never identifies herself or the vampire slayer by name, but—” “What about law enforcement?” He frowned at the interruption. “They’ve shown little interest. Not surprising considering...” He let his words drift away as Kieran realized the reason. No bodies. Kieran glanced at the frozen image on the screen. “Ashes to ashes.” “Some analysts claim the videos are the product of an ingenious illusionist out to make a name for himself. Others who believe the videos are real... Well, I’ll admit the blog and Web site have developed somewhat of a cult following.” Kieran’s gaze slid to the priest. “Foolish to broadcast such activities.”
13
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “That is what has the Order most concerned. They have been careful to not use their real names, and the hunter is always masked, although some of the scenery is familiar. After watching all of the videos, I’ve confirmed kills in at least three major U.S. cities and two in Canada. Some in the Order believe they want to be found. It would make their hunt easier if the prey came to them, no?” Father Hardwin had a point there, although Kieran thought it was still stupid to seek such trouble. If some humans were fighting back against the Horde, why should the Order be concerned? “And you bring this to my attention because...?” “The problem,” the priest said, “is that the hunter and his personal on‐scene reporter do not distinguish between vampires like yourself and those that have turned rogue.” Ah. So that’s what the old man is getting at. He gave the priest a serious look. “I have many vices, Father, but I draw the line at killing humans, even if they’re vampire hunters.” The priest frowned. “You try my patience, Kieran. I would never ask such of you.” Kieran smiled. “Just making sure we’re still on the same page of the Good Book, Father.” After a dramatic sigh, the priest continued. “It’s important for you to remember that other vamps do not abide by the same rules as you and I.” Truer words were never spoken. The Horde was unorganized at best and admittedly reckless in their kills. But, after being hunted almost to extinction over the centuries, all vampires guarded themselves regardless of whether they turned rogue. If some felt threatened by the human hunters, they could go after them—would go after them—with a vengeance. “The Order wants you to make contact with them.” “Without getting myself staked, of course.” The priest gave him a hard glare, but Kieran noticed his lips twitch with suppressed amusement. “If they can be shown that there is a difference, they might be willing to join our cause. The hunter’s abilities, at least those that have
14
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle been documented, appear quite impressive.” Kieran thumbed through a hymnal. “And you want me to risk my neck to test this theory?” “Who among you is better suited for such a task?” Kieran harrumphed at that. “Now, should you contact the woman first—” “Ah, so my interest in the fairer sex comes back to haunt me.” Kieran leaned back in his seat as he studied his friend, a smile playing with his lips. “I’m not suggesting you seduce the woman.” Of course not. Although...Kieran wouldn’t rule that out as a possibility, regardless of what the good priest preached. He struggled to hold back his grin while the priest puffed with offense. Another fault against him, he did love teasing the old man. “I only meant you might survive longer if you approach her first as opposed to her companion. He doesn’t appear that interested in conversation, judging by the videos. Should you take my advice, you might get a few words out before you need to dodge a stake.” Good point. “How do I find this hunter and his feminine comrade? You mentioned familiar scenery?” “Yes, many of the fights have taken place right here, in or around the New Orleans area. But more importantly, I believe I now know the identity of the female.” That captured Kieran’s attention. If Father Hardwin could identify her, so could the Horde. “How?” The priest moved the mouse, clicked on a new link, and another video began. “They have been exceedingly careful to hide their identities, but in studying this one, I discovered... Wait, watch.” The new video was similar in that the battle took place in the dead of night. A full moon lent an eerie glow to the surroundings. The scenery did look familiar. Large, above‐ground crypts, gothic stone tombs like small cities for the dead were common in the low‐lying city and its neighboring parishes. As Kieran watched, he noticed this fight didn’t go as easily as the
15
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle other. The battle raged longer and, this time, the vampire discovered the videographer before the hunter could kill him, the fatal blow made as the vampire charged at the camera, startling the woman. The scenery flashed by in a blur as the camera was either dropped or knocked from her grasp. “Wait,” Kieran said as he caught something in the sudden swipe of motion. But the shot settled once more, and a small angelic stone statue filled the screen, showered in a dust cloud of ashes. “Ah,” the priest said, sounding pleased. “You saw it? Here, let me rewind it just a bit.... There.” He paused the shot, and there, frozen in a single frame, was the woman’s profile. “A blonde...” beauty. He kept the last part of the observation to himself. Smooth, youthful skin. Pale. Flawless. Perfect...slender neck. “Her name?” “If I’m correct, and I’ve no reason to think otherwise, she is Cheyenne Logan.” Kieran glanced at the priest. The way he spoke her name hinted at a familiarity. That thought had Kieran’s eyes narrowing with suspicion. “You speak as if you know her.” “I know of her, and I’ve done some investigating. She’s from the Midwest originally, obtained her masters degree in New England, and moved to New Orleans a little more than seven years ago to teach at one of the community colleges.” Kieran couldn’t see a connection. “There must be more you’re not telling me. Was she a parishioner here or something?” Father Hardwin shook his head. “Her husband was for most of his life.” Her husband? The vampire killer? “She made headlines about six years ago. I believe you were...sowing your oats across the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe at the time.” Kieran rolled his eyes. So what if he succumbed to wanderlust every once in a while? No one died from it. No human, anyway. “Her husband and newborn daughter were brutally murdered.” Kieran’s gaze snapped to Father Hardwin’s. So the husband can’t be
16
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle the vampire killer. Then...who? The priest’s smile was tender and mellow. “He’d been such a proud father. The last time I spoke with him was to discuss the child’s baptism.” “And the wife?” Kieran asked. “Where was she when the killings took place?” “She suffered several injuries herself that required brief hospitalization. Nothing life‐threatening, thank God. Of course, since she survived, she was a suspect. Some still speculate that she did it and went insane afterwards, but the police could find no evidence to indict her.” Suspicion clawed at Kieran’s chest. “And the murderer?” He already assumed the answer. Vengeance was a powerful motivator, enough to make a normal human join forces with a vampire killer. “Never found.” “Vampire.” The priest nodded. “So she claimed afterwards, which is why her defense attorney had her admitted for psychiatric evaluation. The diagnosis was post‐traumatic stress syndrome, but she was eventually released with a clean bill of health even though I hear she’s never altered from her original story.” “How come I’ve never heard of her before now?” The priest frowned. “That was an oversight on the Order’s part. Shortly after her release, she dropped out of sight. Sold her home, moved away, or so we thought. We didn’t think of her as a danger, so no one kept an eye on her. Then this blogger turned up, and our attentions were diverted.” Kieran nodded solemnly. “Where is she now?” “This evening, she’ll be in Baton Rouge.” Kieran didn’t ask how Father Hardwin knew that. The Order had ways of finding out even the most hidden of secrets. “Any place in specific?” The priest smiled. “You’d prefer I make this easy for you? I thought you enjoyed a good hunt.” Kieran refused to take the bait. He shrugged. “It’s you who wants
17
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle me to contact her. If you’d rather it be later than sooner...” “Very well. The university campus at six. She’s scheduled to be a guest speaker there on the topic of Mythology, Fact or Fiction. That’s something else that makes me certain that she’s the blonde we seek.” “How so?” “I matched up a few of those killings that aired on the blog with last reported vampire sightings in the Order’s database. Then I did some cross‐checking. The times and places coincide with her appearances as a guest speaker at colleges across the country.” Kieran got up to leave. If he hurried, he could make it there with time to spare. “You’ll need this,” the priest said, stopping him halfway to the door. When he looked back, Father Hardwin held up a ticket to the event. He retrieved the ticket and grinned. “You just love being thorough, don’t you?” “Always. And, Kieran... Be careful.” “Always.”

Chapter Three The audience laughed as she knew they would. Most people did when she admitted to believing in vampires. Either that or they gave her a wide berth. “But the real question,” she said as she paced on stage, her gaze scanning the crowd, her expression serious, “is not whether I believe in vampires. It’s do vampires exist?” A hand shot up out of the audience. She smiled and pointed at the participant. “Yes?” “Do they?” the young woman asked, her voice jovial, mischievous. Her question prompted more chuckles from the audience, which was a melting pot of people. In some areas sat the college students, there to earn extra credit for a class or because some professor ordered them to attend the function and do a report on it. In other areas sat the gothic bunch, there to appease their hunger for anything strange or mythical. One or two attendees might even be journalism students looking for a story to fill space in the university paper. Then there was...him. Older than the typical college student, he didn’t fit the part of gothic enthusiast either. Reporter? Maybe. With thick, dark hair and chiseled features, he had the classic good looks one would expect of a talking head on the evening news. Although, for some reason she couldn’t fathom, that seemed unlikely, too. But he sat front and center...well, center of the second row, and watched her as if recording her
19
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle every move. She felt it. “Ms. Logan?” She winced. Concentrate... “That depends,” she said, forcing a smile. “It depends on your definition of what a vampire is. The basic definition is a being that sucks the blood of a host to survive. Defined like that, a tick or leech would certainly qualify.” A spatter of laughter sprang from the sea of faces. “Others might define vampires as killers with a taste for blood.” She faced the audience, her expression deadly serious. “Throughout centuries, there have been murderers like that. Cannibals who crave human flesh. Serial killers who drank or even bathed in the blood of their victims. Vlad the Impaler, Elizabeth Bathory... History is filled with such horrific tales of violence.” Silence met that remark and, for an instant, his gaze captured hers. His expression showed no reaction to her speech at all, but her breath caught in her throat at the intensity of his look. Goose bumps erupted along her arms. She blinked, turned away, and fought the impulse to place her hand over her racing heart. Confusion warred inside her body with an unfathomable arousal. No man had had such a strong effect on her libido; not since her husband. That thought chilled her mood, and she covered her discomfort by sipping from a glass of water that sat atop a stool on stage. She struggled to ignore the tremor of her hand. Turning back to the audience and avoiding any glances toward the center of the second row, she said, “So, why is it that people find the word vampire so unbelievable? Maybe it’s because of the sensationalism of Hollywood films like Dracula, Blade, or Underworld. Make believe. The stuff of fantasy and creative imagination. But is there not an element of truth behind it all? A hint of fact underneath the fiction?” She had everyone’s attention now, and no one was laughing. “The truth is that there are dangers in this world. People go missing all of the time without any explanation whatsoever. Every day, all over the world. It can occur to anyone among any age group, any race of people, and without regard to economic status. Regardless of what term
20
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle you use, killers do walk among us, hiding in the shadows of the night, preying on the weak, the inexperienced, the unaware victims too naïve to take precautions.” She paused, staring out at the silent montage. “Every myth begins with a grain of truth. It takes curious, open minds to separate the facts from the fables and prepare themselves for reality.” Several hands rose, making her smile. After another pause, she made her pick, and the flood of questions started. Kieran watched the woman on stage while she answered the myriad questions. She was prettier in person than the frame of video suggested. Darker waves of sandy blonde hair shone with highlights of spun gold in the spotlight. Average height, she appeared toned, her muscles sculpted from either hours at the gym or pounding the jogging trails. Or from chasing vampires. Her smile was spectacular, her flesh rosy, and her pulse skipped every time she glanced his way. One corner of his mouth tilted up. This might be easier than he’d suspected. He’d already scanned the audience for anyone who matched the build of her more deadly partner. A few stood out, but after watching each young man for a while, he’d decided none of them could be the vampire slayer. Applause signaled the end of the event. He waited for others around him to stand and head her way before he rose and exited the auditorium. One last glance over his shoulder showed her surrounded by people and too preoccupied to be aware of his departure. Good. She’d noticed him earlier, but he wanted their first true meeting to be a bit more...private. So he awaited her in the parking lot. It took another thirty minutes before she appeared. With one final wave to well‐wishers, she followed the concrete sidewalk toward cars a few aisles over from where he stood. He glanced at the setting sun and smiled as his powers strengthened with each inch the orb slipped beneath the horizon. He grabbed his helmet off the bike’s handlebar and set it on the gas tank. After cranking the motorcycle, he walked the bike backwards out of
21
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle the shaded slot, and timed his approach to her press of the locking fob on her keychain. “Hello,” he said and was surprised to see that she didn’t startle. Instead, she met his gaze and stopped short of her van’s door, her thumb poised over the panic button on her fob. “I wondered,” she said mildly, “whether you’d vanished into the night, Mister...” Despite her calm exterior, he could hear the increased tattoo of her pulse. He gave her a careful smile and regal nod in recognition of her brazen regard. “I preferred to speak with you away from your...gothic fans, Cheyenne,” he said. “You know my name, but I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage, Mister...” She again paused expectantly. “Kieran,” he supplied, deciding that it was too soon—too dangerous—to provide a surname. If he was unable to seduce her to his way of thinking, giving her too much information about himself could prove dangerous. “What exactly did you wish to speak to me about, Mr. Kieran?” “No mister, just Kieran.” She nodded and repeated, “Kieran. What topic did you wish to discuss?” “Vampires, of course.” He patted the seat behind him. “Care to hop on and continue the talk some place more private?” Her smirk turned suspicious. “Private...” “You hungry? I envisioned a little candlelight, quiet corner booth, and a delicious dinner for two.” “You’re asking me on a date?” “If you want to call it that…” He glanced at his watch then at the setting sun. “It is getting late, though. With all you said about villainous creatures of the dark, I imagine you’d prefer not to remain exposed to the night elements after sunset.” She laughed. “And I suppose you expect me to overlook the danger inherent in hopping on a motorcycle with a total stranger and riding off into that sunset?”

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He grinned, albeit cautiously, and glanced at the fob in her hand. Her other hand was hidden inside the pocket of her blazer, and he wondered whether she was armed. “What if I promised to be a perfect angel?” he asked teasingly. “I’d have to ask whether you meant the heavenly or fallen kind.” He laughed. “You are as quick‐witted as you are beautiful. I admire that.” She leaned a hip on her van, crossing her arms. One hand was empty, but that thumb remained over the fob’s panic button. “And you’re a handsome devil, but flattery will not work on me, either.” He cocked an eyebrow at her. She was bold. Sly, too. His opinion of her climbed another notch, and he had to remind himself that she worked with one who preyed indiscriminately on his kind. A cool spring breeze played with her hair, giving her a look of innocence he knew was a mirage. He placed a hand over his heart. “I meant the words in the sincerest way, I assure you.” She gave him a slight nod, her deep green gaze glued to his. “I’m still not getting on that motorcycle.” With a somewhat dramatic sigh, he said, “A standoff, then. Shall I have my people call your people to make an appointment?” His gaze shifted away briefly when the lampposts scattered about the lot came on—a clear signal that night had arrived. “At high noon, perhaps?” He’d have to make certain the meeting took place indoors if she should take him up on the offer. Although he could walk about in the daylight, his sensitive skin couldn’t take direct midday sun. Tans looked great on vampires and helped them blend in, but sunburns and blisters were a bitch to deal with even though they usually healed within twenty‐ four hours. Her lips twitched as if she were fighting a chuckle. Pushing away from her van’s fender, she reached for the driver’s door and pulled it open. “That won’t be necessary. If you really want to talk, you can follow me to a cafe up the street. It’s usually full of college kids cramming for exams, but it’s open all night.”
23
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle So much for his plans for a more private venue, but he’d take what he could get. At least he knew she wouldn’t attack him in such a public, crowded location. He lifted his full‐face helmet off the gas tank and put it on. “Lead the way.” En route, he reevaluated his approach with the intriguing Cheyenne Logan. She was more intelligent than he’d given her credit for, and without knowing her partner’s location, he’d have to proceed with care. Her beauty made him want to seduce her, and he hadn’t ruled out that option. As his bedmate, she’d be more susceptible to persuasion, more open to consider his point of view. But that was only a possibility if she didn’t already have a lover. Her partner remained a missing link in the equation, and Kieran hated missing links. After parking, he reached the café’s front door ahead of her and held it open as she went through. The place was a small hole‐in‐the‐wall establishment, clean, but not nearly as packed as she’d led him to believe. Must not be finals week. Soft jazz music played in the background. A gray‐haired woman met them with a welcoming smile and a couple of menus in hand. “Table for two?” “Yes, thank you,” Cheyenne said before he could respond. As they followed the hostess to a table with a bud vase of fake flowers, he placed his hand at the small of her back. She didn’t stop him or acknowledge the touch, but her silent acceptance pleased him. The closer he got to her, the more he wanted to touch her elsewhere. The more he encountered her sparring personality, the more challenged he became in wanting to break through her barriers to see what lay beneath her prickly exterior. At the table, he held her chair then chose to sit in the next one instead of across from her. She acknowledged the move with a slight quirk of luscious lips but said nothing. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving,” she admitted. He nodded in agreement, but kept his thoughts to himself. She didn’t need to know that he was starving for a taste of her lips...and more.
24
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle They spent the next few minutes staring at the menus while he allowed her to postpone their talk a little longer. When the waitress arrived, she ordered a cola, steak, and eggs over easy. He asked for a glass of wine and bowl of fruit salad, which earned him a questioning look from his companion. “I don’t eat meat,” he explained. He didn’t add that a vampire couldn’t consume anything that was already dead, whether raw or well done, without getting a severe case of nausea. But a few fresh fruits or vegetables could provide a vampire with a great way to diffuse suspicion. She chuckled. “Then I think it’s safe to say you’re no flesh‐eating vampire.” His smile was tight lipped, but his response was serious. “You’re safe with me, Cheyenne.” She studied his face for a long moment then murmured, “We’ll see, Kieran. We’ll see.” She lifted her glass of ice water in silent salute then took a sip. “So... What exactly is it that you do for a living?” He met her gaze head on and admitted, “I kill rogue vampires.”

Chapter Four Cheyenne choked, coughing so hard tears welled in her eyes. And here she’d been doing so well to keep her reactions in check. Until now. Of all the answers she expected, his had not been one of them. He leaned toward her and rubbed her back, but she held up a hand, a gesture that said she’d be okay. When her coughs subsided, she took a soothing drink of water and wiped her mouth with a napkin. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I assumed you of all people would understand and not be quite so...shocked...by my career choice.” “I just—” She cleared her throat. “I’ve never met anyone who admitted such a thing before.” She glanced at his face then looked back at her hands fisting the napkin. His crystal blue eyes had such a strong effect on her. They reminded her of the clearest spring sky and, like that vast heaven, seemed to hide a universe of mysteries yet to be explored. She found it difficult to meet his penetrating gaze without wanting to seek out his secrets, learn more about him. The waitress arrived with their meal, which gave her time to think. Clean‐shaven, his skin was a warm tan; whether natural complexion or sun‐kissed, she didn’t know. But that, added with his dark hair and slight European accent, made him an exotic attraction she couldn’t deny. Even his manners had an Old World feel but then again, if he’d been raised in the South, maybe holding the door or a chair for a lady had been drilled into his head when he was a boy.
26
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He popped a grape in his mouth and then looked at her over the rim of his wine glass while he took a sip. Damn, the man had charm. She stabbed her steak, sawed a piece off, and stuck it in her mouth. He wore a short‐sleeved, navy‐colored T‐shirt, black denims sans a belt, and boots. She’d damn near sighed aloud when he’d removed his biker jacket before taking a seat beside her. His hands were bare, no rings or tell‐tale tan lines. His only jewelry was a thin gold chain around his neck, long enough that the front lay tucked inside his collar. His hard biceps and a tight, trim physique proved he had the muscles to fight vampires. His neck and arms showed no scars, so if he was telling the truth about his occupation, he was apparently very good at it. But Mark had been good at it, too. Until... “If you hunt vampires, what could you hope to learn from me? I’m just a motivational speaker on the subject of myths and legends.” His eyes narrowed, and she knew he caught the lie for what it was. “You’re more than you portray, Cheyenne.” His voice was soft, deep, and dangerously seductive. She kept silent, refusing to confirm or deny his suspicions. He smiled. “But, that’s a matter for another time. Tonight, I want to discuss one aspect of your speech in particular.” “Oh? And what would that be?” She took another bite of her meal. “That all vampires are villainous. Care to debate the matter with me?” “There’s nothing to debate. I’ve never met one that wasn’t dangerous in a very deadly way. Fangs and a lust for blood apparently do that to a person.” He took a longer sip of his wine, his expression serious, thoughtful. “So it’s impossible for vampires to be like the human race, some good, some bad? I mean, the world is filled with both law‐abiding citizens and criminals, is it not?” “Vampires are good at only one thing, and that is sucking the life‐ sustaining blood from their victims. They’re monsters. The only safe, law‐ abiding vampires I know are dead ones.” She stabbed another piece of
27
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle meat. “Dead, dead...not walking dead.” Monster... Her words struck him, a punch from the past, a wound that still bled. “I get it.” He lowered his gaze to his glass of wine and fought free of the memories that haunted his daily existence. “Hello? You okay?” He looked up. Her eyes, so beautiful, stared at him with mild curiosity. “Yes, fine.” He had to stay focused on the here and now, not let his mind wander to the past, to things that could not be changed. “Tell me,” he said, getting back to the topic at hand, “as an expert on the vampire legend, what parts of it are true? And which are false?” She swallowed the bite she’d just chewed and began cutting another piece. “Well, they’re nocturnal creatures, human in appearance, with sharp, elongated fangs, of course.” “Of course.” He’d never envisioned how pleasant it could be to watch a woman eat. Such a normal human thing to do, a natural habit that required little thought and no concern. “So the sun part of the myth seems accurate enough. I think they prefer the night because they use it to hide their killing sprees. They may not age physically, but they are no more immortal than you or me. They can be killed by fire or with a sharp blade of any kind, so long as you pierce the heart, or cut off their heads. Any other wound only pisses them off.” As she ate her meal, she conversed with him in an easygoing manner he found enjoyable. A rare encounter shared between human and vampire with no blood, no fear to mar the moment. She paused and gave him a bemused smile. “Not exactly a good topic to discuss over a meal, huh?” He took a healthy bite of fruit and chewed as if he could savor the taste even though that was impossible. Ever since his turning, blood was the one thing that provided any flavor. “My appetite’s intact. Go on, please.” “I can’t imagine that I’m telling you anything you haven’t already learned firsthand as a vampire slayer. Unless, you’re new at it... Are you?” His shrug was noncommittal. “In my line of work, I seldom have
28
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle the opportunity to talk about it on an intellectual level. Most people would react as if I’d lost my mind.” She frowned. “Yeah. I know the feeling.” “Do you?” She blinked at him, her guard up, and he wished he’d kept the question to himself. Her gaze dropped. She pushed what was left of her food around on her plate. “Yeah. I get that kind of reaction a lot from people who don’t buy into my speeches.” He suspected she left out a lot, but let it go without remark. Instead, he gestured to her pendant. “The crucifix. Is that part of the legend true? Do you wear it to ward off vampires?” She lifted the pendant for a quick glance. “A family heirloom,” she murmured. “I doubt you’ll ever find a vampire inside a place of worship, but they can be on hallowed ground. That part of the myth is false. After all, most cemeteries are hallowed ground, and they find it convenient to hide out in crypts.” “Interesting.” She’d done her homework, but he was more interested in her eyes, in what they told him, than in her matter‐of‐fact statements. Volatile emotions stirred—flecks of anger mingled with hints of a deeper, darker sorrow. “The myth that they need an invitation to enter your home is a lie. Like with any burglar, an open door or window is invitation enough. Don’t know about garlic, but I seriously doubt it’s for real.” She dabbed a bite of steak in what was left of her egg yolk and ate it, then washed it down with her soft drink. “How about you?” she asked him. “Care to share any of your secrets?” His grin showed a brief flash of white teeth. “You already know one of my most important ones.” “Okay. Let’s start with how you learned of me?” “A friend of mine got me a ticket. He said I should meet you, that I might be interested in hearing what you had to tell.” Cheyenne sat back and studied his face, but his expression gave
29
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle nothing away. Like a jigsaw puzzle with thousands of pieces, he was a mystery she’d yet to solve, a picture unfinished. “And would this friend be a mutual acquaintance?” He sipped his wine. “I don’t think so. He’s a priest in New Orleans.” A priest? He’d surprised her again, though she fought to hide it. The waitress interrupted with a question about desert, which they both declined, so she thanked them and set the tab with a couple of mints on the table. Kieran’s hand beat hers to the paper. Their eyes met, held. He was so handsome...and warm, his skin soft beneath her fingers. He leaned closer. Suddenly hoping he’d kiss her, she let her thumb lightly stroke his hand, until his gaze dropped to their hands. “I’ve got the bill,” he said. “After all, I did invite you.” “Oh. Okay.” Embarrassed at her own needy thoughts, she pulled away, took a final swallow of her drink, and excused herself to go to the restroom where she proceeded to glare at her reflection in the mirror. “You just met the guy! You don’t want to do this.” But she did. He was so sexy, so charming. Best of all, he believed in vampires, so he would never look at her as if she’d lost her marbles or needed a straightjacket. Since the deaths of her husband and child, the only people who’d accepted her testimony as truth were her brother and Val. Most of those who heard her speeches would consider her words, but eventually rule them out. She was entertainment, a novelty, enjoyed but soon forgotten. Even Mark had remained skeptical at first, while he appeased his little sister by going on a hunt with her. That was until he encountered a real vampire. She hadn’t bothered to say I told you so, but he’d taken the hunts very seriously from then on…until he too died. She looked at her watch. What was she thinking? She had no time to consider extending dinner to anything beyond a free meal and a bit of table chatter. It didn’t matter that Kieran’s ass looked hot in tight jeans or that she could drown in his blue eyes and die a happy woman. She should get back to her hotel, get some rest, and prepare for her hunt. The sun had already set, and her best chance at finding a vampire
30
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle usually came between midnight and dawn when they returned to cemeteries. After Mark died, she’d been forced to reevaluate her methods. She wasn’t as strong as Mark had been, so she couldn’t confront them in the middle of the night when they were at their strongest. However, if she lay in wait at a distance and used binoculars to watch for them, to discover their hiding places, she could choose to attack in the broad daylight when they were at their most vulnerable. The only risk was getting caught by groundskeepers or visitors to nearby tombs, but the vampires themselves seemed unaware that their usual choices in the more remote, rundown gravesites helped her go unnoticed. By the time she returned to the table, Kieran had paid the bill and put his leather jacket back on. On the way out to the vehicles, she asked, “Why did you choose to start killing vampires?” “Rogue vampires.” She eyed him. “They’re all rogue.” His smile was small. “That’s debatable.” She rolled her eyes. “You’re dodging my question.” “I guess you could say the job sort of found me.” Feeling a close bond to his response, she remained quiet, nodded, and turned toward her van. He grabbed her hand. “Thank you,” he said. Facing him, her hand still held by his, she looked up into his eyes, so serious and sincere. “For what?” “For tonight. And...” He lifted her hand and kissed it. “For not spewing water when I told you what I did for a living.” A giggle burst out, a mild fit of hilarity that proved contagious as he chuckled with her. When her laughter subsided, she found her palms over his chest and his hands joined at the small of her back. His warm embrace kept the night’s chill at bay, but still she shivered. The steady rhythm of his heartbeat pulsed beneath her hands, and she dropped her gaze to stare at them. He was so...alive. Virile. Stop it…now.
31
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle With a gentle finger, he lifted her face to his. “I’m going to kiss you, Cheyenne. Unless you tell me no.” Damn, she loved the way he said her name, as if he savored the sound of it on his tongue like deep, rich chocolate. Her lips parted, but no words came forth. Neither did she breathe. Say no. Say it now. “Yes.” He lowered his head, his lips soft against hers. Wanting to revel in the sensation of touch alone, she closed her eyes. A brief touch, a teasing caress, and a warm exchange of air. Then he closed his mouth over hers, his tongue slipping inside to stroke hers. Yes! He tasted of strawberries and peppermint. She hungered for more. Although she knew she should back off, she leaned closer. His kiss was tender, his body firm. Her legs were weak, her senses overwhelmed. And for the first time in a very long time, she felt safe. When he pulled away, she caught the scent of his cologne, masculine and fresh. He held her hips, gave her another peck on the lips, and smiled—a slow, sensuous curve of his mouth. “It was a pleasure talking with you, Cheyenne, but I really must go. As you said, dangerous things come out in the dead of the night, and I’ve got a job to do.” He released her and swung a leg over his motorcycle. He’s leaving? Just like that? “Wait.” She winced at the urgency in her voice, but she couldn’t explain the uncanny urge to hold onto him, prevent him from seeking out the dangers that vampires imbued. She’d seen them take her child, husband, and brother away from her. The thought of them killing another person she knew, even if it was a man she just met, sent a bolt of panic racing along her nerves. He’d cranked the engine and sat staring at her, waiting, while his bike rumbled beneath him. “I’d like to call on you, again,” he began. “Maybe I could—” “Take me for a ride,” she said, adding, “on your motorcycle, I mean,” when she felt her cheeks warm.
32
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle The sky blue of his eyes was darker now, his gaze more intense, yet curious. “Now?” “Now.” After a long pause, he handed her the helmet. “Hop on.” She donned the helmet, left the chin straps unfastened, and got on behind him, wrapping her arms around his middle. Taking a deep breath, she tried unsuccessfully to settle her nervous system. When she was in position, he peered at her over his shoulder. “Where to?” She lifted the helmet’s visor, took another deep breath, and made a spur‐of‐the‐moment decision. “To that hotel.” She pointed across the street where she’d booked a room earlier in the evening. He blinked. She grinned, knowing she’d caught him by surprise. After selling her family home and funding much of her defense attorney’s retirement plan, which had kept her out of jail if not out of a psych ward, she bought the used service van, because of its lack of windows on the sides and back, and converted it into a house on wheels. She often slept in the back except when she visited Val or landed speaking engagements that provided hotel stays. He revved the engine, put the cycle into first gear. “Hang on.” She slapped the visor closed and hugged him while he drove her from one parking lot to another. She directed him around the side where he chose a vacant spot. After getting off, she waited for him to do the same before she returned his helmet. He chuckled. “At least the shortness of the trip reduced my risk of getting a ticket.” When she gave him a questioning look, he added, “Louisiana law. Everyone must wear helmets. It supposedly saves lives.” “Ah...” Thinking that she hoped to do the same, she took his hand. After all, if he wasn’t out fighting vampires, she could be certain he’d live to see at least one more day.

Chapter Five Kieran had sensed her panic when he started to leave, but he wasn’t quite sure why she had such a change of heart. After she’d shied away from him at the table, he assumed she’d need more time and prepared himself to give her some. Although he hadn’t intended to go far, she didn’t know that. Neither did he tell her he’d planned to keep an eye on her until he found her partner and was certain the Horde hadn’t discovered her identity. Of course, he didn’t realize at the time she’d booked a room so close to the café. He still found her cleverness surprising, and that amused him. She might not fully trust him yet, but she’d obviously decided to not let their time together end. And that was fine with him. So long as she didn’t have an unwelcome surprise waiting for him in her room. It bothered him that he hadn’t been able to locate her partner. He paused as she used her keycard to open the door. Walking in, she flipped on the light and turned to face him with a hesitant smile. “Well, don’t just stand there. Come on in.” She tossed her purse and keycard on the dresser. His senses confirmed the room was empty except for her. He entered and allowed the door to close behind him. At its click, such a final sound, she lowered her gaze and appeared much more nervous than she did seconds earlier. He’d have to do something about that. But first, he scanned the room.
34
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle The king‐sized bed was turned down. A small table held some paperwork and a laptop. Only one suitcase sat neatly on a luggage stand, the zipper open but top down. And a makeup bag lay near the sink underneath the mirror, which showed his reflection and hers. A good thing that myth was false, too, he thought mildly. She looked around, approached the table where she straightened up the papers. “It’s not much, but it’s home for tonight.” “You don’t have to do this,” he said, “not if you’re uncomfortable.” She stopped, stared, and gave him a self‐deprecating chuckle. “That obvious, is it?” “A bit.” He smiled, approached her, and lifted a hand to cup her face. “It’s just been...a long time.” “I’m content to follow your lead.” For now, he didn’t add. His thumb brushed across her cheek, having no effect on the blush there. “We can go as fast or as slow as you want.” She closed her eyes and raised her hand to cover his. Stepping closer, he cradled her face and lowered his head to kiss her. The moment their lips touched, she sighed and leaned into him. Despite her heels, she was shorter than he was and had to rise up on tiptoe. But, when her arms encircled his neck, he pulled her tight against him, and her curves perfectly aligned with his body. His fingers splayed across her back to hold her in place. She turned to plant kisses along his jaw, his neck. The moment her lips pressed against his own pulse, his cock hardened in an instant. He lifted his face toward heaven and groaned. Her steady heartbeat called to him, and he had to fight the desire to take more than what she offered. When her nails lightly scored his back, he responded by cupping her butt to hold her snug against his groin so she’d have no doubt of what her touch did to him. A tug drew his attention, and he sucked in his stomach while she pulled his T‐shirt from his jeans. He allowed her to strip his jacket and the shirt from his body before he returned the favor by removing her blazer and blouse. His first sight of the ivory satin bra made him want to rip it off
35
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle with his teeth. Instead, he made short work of the tiny fasteners and sent the delicate lingerie to the floor with the rest of their clothes. Her breathing and heartbeat testified to a growing urgency that had an effect on her fingers while they fumbled with his button fly. He had better luck with her slacks and soon, they slithered down to reveal legs he longed to have wrapped around his waist. She kicked off her heels and stepped out of the pants. Then, brushing his hands aside, she went back to work on his buttons. Although he wanted to smile, other urges gained his attention when she accomplished her goal and pushed his jeans down around his thighs. He released a sigh even as his cock swelled inside his underwear at the touch of her hand. She stroked him twice before he had to stay her hand or risk embarrassment. Her gaze shot to his when he grabbed her wrist and said her name. He released her and slid his own underwear downward. She didn’t drop her gaze, but instead, tucked a thumb in each side of her own panties and sent them to the floor. He sensed her challenge in that stare, but he didn’t give a fuck about winning such a game. He conceded victory to her, took his time, and let his gaze drift down over every luscious curve of her body. By the time he’d traveled back along the same path to look her in the eye once more, his own heartbeat was none too steady, and he felt most of it throb in his cock. She was so damn beautiful, he expected to wake up any moment, pissed as hell that the vision before him was a dream. But the vision was real. So was the mischievous smile that flashed across her face and the push that forced him to sit on the bed or fall. “Did you mean what you said?” she asked as she tugged on his pants and underwear. “About what?” He thought she intended to strip him completely, but she left the clothes just past his knees. When she ran her hands up over his thighs, his muscles tensed and his cock took notice. He damn near cursed aloud when those sweet hands slid to the mattress on either side of his hips.
36
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Following my lead. Letting me set the pace.” She crawled onto the bed and straddled his lap. He normally controlled foreplay and dominated the women he fucked, but if it would make her more comfortable to feel in command, he’d let her be on top. This time. He cupped her ass with both hands and gave her a cautious smile. “I like your pace so far.” Her body nudged his cock, and he wanted nothing more than to lift her so that he could slide deep inside her pussy. She ran a fingertip around one of his nipples, her short nail flicking the tip. “A part of me wants to sexually assault every inch of you,” she admitted, making him laugh. “Have your way with me. You won’t hear me cry for mercy.” She grinned, her eyes bright and her cheeks rosy. “But another part of me wants to take my time and make this last.” She looked him in the eye, her expression serious once more. “I don’t usually do one‐night stands, but I’m not asking for more than here and now.” He studied her face, saw the longing mixed with caution, and nodded. He refused to dwell on why her words rocked him to his soul. He should be grateful that she didn’t seek any long‐lasting relationship—they never worked between humans and vampires—but he wasn’t. And he didn’t want to acknowledge that her touch made him feel as if his life had just begun, but she had that effect. “Now is all we ever have,” he said. “The past is gone, and tomorrow may never come. I’m prepared to make now last as long you want it to...if you are.” With a tender smile, she ran her hands over his shoulders and pulled him forward for a chaste kiss that he turned into something deep and poignant. Wrapping his arms around her, he fell backwards onto the bed, taking her with him. His legs still hung off it, bent at the knees and trapped within his jeans. She pushed up to look down at him, her grin broad, and her hair like a curtain of privacy around them. He let his hands roam over the swell of her hips, the dip of her waist. Upward until he stopped to knead her breasts and thumb her taut
37
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle nipples. She ran her fingers along his arms, shoulders, and pecs. Dipping her head lower, she pressed another kiss on his mouth, and he took advantage of the move to hug her close, bucking his hips to rub his cock against her pussy. Her whimper proved she wasn’t unaffected, so he repeated the move, his hands squeezing her buttocks, caressing her thighs. While she took charge of the kiss, he took control in other ways. He cupped the back of her neck to hold her close for the kiss and slipped his other hand between them to tease her clit. At the first touch, he found her moist with arousal, ready for him. He didn’t rush, though. She wanted it to last, and he’d do his damndest to make it happen. He started slow, rubbing her pussy lips, exploring at his leisure. Then he circled her clit, plucking it until she squirmed above him. Swallowing her groan, he continued their kiss and pushed a finger inside her pussy to appease some of the hunger she expressed. It wasn’t enough, he knew—not for her or him—but he wanted to make this first time together memorable. He pushed a second finger inside, curving them to stroke her G‐spot. She jerked free of their kiss and took a deep breath, her eyes closed and mouth wide open. The sight was the most passionate moment of his rather long life. He stared, trying to memorize every detail. Her lips were moist, plump from their kisses. Her cheeks were flushed, and her beautiful hair offered a soft frame for her face. “Want me to slow down?” he asked, half teasing, half praying for a negative answer. Her fingers bit into his shoulders as she held herself up. Panting, she rotated her hips, her only response to his question. So he began to move his fingers inside her once more, his thumb massaging her clit. The moment he felt her thighs tremble, he guided her closer and sucked the tip of one breast into his mouth. Her reaction was immediate; she tossed her head back and moaned. With one hand, she cradled his head while he took his time suckling. But, all too soon, her heartbeat sped up. Her breathing quickened. He pulled his fingers out of her, and she rubbed her pussy over his
38
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle fully aroused cock. His fangs lengthened. He released her breast, grabbed her hips, and lifted her. He ground his teeth together, kept his lips closed tight, and met her gaze. Her expression wasn’t one of alarm as he’d feared. Instead, her eyes were dark with passion. With his last thread of control, he guided her onto his cock in a slow, almost agonizing descent, and watched her eyelids drift closed. Inch by inch, he entered her tight pussy. The warm slide of her inner walls was almost his undoing. He pressed his head against the bed, his whole body taut with unrestrained need. One final nudge and she was seated with his cock buried to the hilt. He lay there not wanting to move, yet he couldn’t help it. His cock throbbed inside her, a steady, insistent thump that increased when he lifted her to slam her down again. His thrust embedded his cock so deep, he felt the pleasure of their union in the marrow of his bones. “Oh, God...” she murmured, the sound breathy. “Ride me, chére.” She moved a little, but it wasn’t enough. “Ride me. Harder.” He guided her as she obeyed his plea. Her nails bit into his shoulders, not that he cared one whit. “Yesss,” he hissed, letting his palms climb her torso to fondle her firm breasts. “Oh yeah.” She moaned in agreement. The scent of sex surrounded him, the sweet sounds of her desire engulfed his senses, and her pulse called to him. He needed more and lifted his hips to collide with her next downward thrust. And the next. With each collision of their bodies, her heartbeat pounded—a sound that echoed in his mind. “Fuck,” he said, the curse bursting from his lips before he could prevent it. “That’s so good.” He pinched her nipples, rolling them between thumb and forefinger. Her pace increased as she succumbed to the allure of control and rode him with complete abandon. His climax imminent, he released her breasts and clawed at the sheets in an attempt to hold it and his hunger for a taste of her blood at bay...a little longer. But then her orgasm struck. Her body shuddered with sweet release around him. He lost his fight, arched his back, and slammed into her pussy with one final stroke,

Chapter Six Cheyenne felt the jolt of his final thrust, the impact rippling through her system with heady tingles. He filled her so completely, her whole body warmed to his touch, and she panted as she tried to quell the excited thudding of her heart. Awash with overwhelming pleasure, she opened her eyes to watch his reaction to their shared rapture. There beneath her lay— Vampire! Head back, mouth open, and fangs. Terror ripped her heart in two. A scream tore from her lungs. Adrenaline screeched through her body. She scrambled off of him. Her knee to his gut no doubt caused the grunt she heard, but she didn’t stop in her dash for a weapon. Throwing open her suitcase, she snatched the first knife she could find and turned around, buck‐naked, ready to attack. Kieran had yanked up his briefs and pants, was trying to fasten the button fly, and she saw her chance. With a shrill cry, she lunged at him, but he turned just in time to throw off her aim. The blade sliced his shoulder and slid past the mark. With a hissed curse, he grabbed her wrist and swung her into the bed. She fell face first, bounced on the mattress, and tried to scurry away. He caught her ankle, and she screamed. With a strong tug, he dragged her back toward him. She kicked out, flipped over, and came up with the knife. He stopped her swing a mere inch short of its target.
41
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle One blink of an eyelash later, he had her pinned face up on the bed. He held her wrists in an unyielding grasp. Her body lay trapped beneath his solid thighs. Slowly, he squeezed her wrist until she cried out and lost her grip on the knife. She was dead now. It was just a matter of seconds. But she wouldn’t go down without a fight. She continued to struggle, trying to twist and bite him before he could bite her and end her life. “Would you fucking stop already?” he shouted, yanking her arms straight out to either side. “I’m beginning to wonder who the damn vampire is in here—me or you!” “Get it over with, you bastard.” She would not beg for her life. She had nothing more to live for anyway, except for the wish that she could take his ass to hell with her. She jerked and thrashed, trying to find a weakness, any means for escape. “I’m not going to kill you, Cheyenne. You can stop struggling, too, because I won’t release you either. Not yet.” Squeezing her eyes shut, she dropped her head to the mattress and drew in huge amounts of air. Why would he not just kill her and be done with it? Why fuck her first, unless he intended to... “I’ll never let you do it.” “Do what exactly?” he asked, his tone one of obvious frustration. She refused to look at him. His eyes were too dangerously alluring. “Turn me. I won’t drink your blood, so you might as well kill me now. If you don’t, if you somehow manage to turn me, I swear I’ll kill myself the first chance I get.” “I’m not here to turn you.” Now he sounded pissed or appalled, or both. “I’ve never turned a human, and won’t, especially not against your will. Even as a vampire, I have my limits.” She opened her eyes and looked at his face, but movement lower drew her gaze. His necklace... What kind of vampire wears a cross? Her attempts to get free ceased as she puzzled over the discovery. Then other facts of the past few hours came to mind. He’d attended her speech tonight...before sunset. He’d
42
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle eaten food. How was that possible? She stared at the golden pendant that dangled in front of her like some hypnotic lure. He looked down at his necklace and back at her, his fists still firm around her wrists. “Some of your assumptions are inaccurate,” he stated, as if to answer her unspoken question. So what if she’d been wrong about that, she fumed. She wasn’t wrong about vampires being murderers. Although she no longer scrabbled with him, she continued to plot for some way to get the upper hand, to escape, to survive. He’d softened her up with his charming ways and sexy‐as‐hell good looks. But weren’t serial killers often described as charming and attractive? Her mistake had been to assume all vampires acted like the monsters that killed her family. He might be different from other vampires she’d encountered. Maybe he liked to meet and toy with his victims before drinking them dry. But, crucifix or not, she couldn’t accept his word that he wasn’t out to kill her. He was a vampire. Killing was what vampires did. Blood stained his arm and chest below where she’d cut him, but the flow had nearly stopped already. A long, thin slice, it hadn’t been a deep enough wound—nor large enough—to weaken him with excessive blood loss. And it was nighttime. She might not understand how he walked about in the daytime, but she was certain he’d be at full strength, like others of his kind, so long as the sun lay beneath the horizon. She’d have to find some way to convince him it was safe to let her get up. Buy herself time to come up with a solution. She forced her entire body to relax, regulating her breaths and calming her heartbeat. Let him think he had command of the situation. His grip on her wrists loosened, but he didn’t release her. “Are you ready to settle down and listen?” “Will you please let me get dressed?” she asked. “I will. As soon as I’m certain you won’t come at me with another blade.” “I won’t.”
43
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle His eyes narrowed. “I promise,” she added, trying for a sincere, harmless expression. A large, sharp stake would do the trick. “You’ll have to do a lot better than that if you hope to convince me you’re willing to sit down and discuss our differences, without violence, like two sane human beings should.” She frowned. “In case you have been unable to look in the mirror lately, you really should know you’re not human.” “That doesn’t make me a bad person.” Stunned at his audacity, she gaped, turned her face away, and tried another approach. “Fine then. A gentleman would let a lady up so she could get dressed.” He chuckled. “I never claimed to be a gentleman. And a lady would not attack an unarmed man with a knife.” She glared at him. “You’re a vampire...with fangs. Since when do you ever go around unarmed?” His lips twitched, and then he grinned—those very white, very sharp fangs quite visible now. “Good point.” “Thank you. Now, let me up. Please.” He scooted backwards off of her and pulled her up by the wrists. Still holding onto them, he warned, “Put some clothes on...slowly. One false move and modesty be damned. I’ll tie you up regardless of what you do or do not have on.” Cautiously, she dared to go to the sink where she dampened a washcloth and, watching the vampire watch her, wiped off what blood she could before gathering her clothes. As she dressed, she searched for a way to escape, but knew that she couldn’t just run for the door. A glance at the clock told her it was not yet midnight. His powers would be at their fullest then. But then again, Kieran did things no other vampire she’d encountered had done before. She asked, “How come you’re able to move about in the daytime? I thought day‐walkers were things Hollywood made up to sell movie tickets.” “Just as humans can move about day or night, so can we. After all,
44
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle we were humans once ourselves. However, our vampiric abilities are strongest at night. Most choose to be nocturnal for that reason.” And there were a lot of sins one could hide in the blackness of night. She frowned at that thought. He shrugged, picking up her discarded knife from the bed. After looking it over, he wiped it off and dropped it into a dresser drawer. “Of course, another reason could be that we’re more susceptible to sunburns, although SPF 50 works wonders.” “I bet.” She rolled her eyes and slipped her feet into a pair of sneakers. Fully clothed in a T‐shirt and shorts, she faced him. “Now what?” He pulled out the only chair in the hotel room, turned it toward her. “Sit.” When she did, he took her hands and pulled them behind her. “Hey, wait—” “Thank you.” “Stop. What are you doing?” He used her own bra, discarded from earlier, to bind her hands to the chair. Furious and panicky, she began to struggle again. She didn’t stand a chance. He yanked the phone from the wall and used the cord to bind her ankles, first to each other, then to one of the chair’s legs. “Why are you doing this?” “You aren’t the only one who wants to get dressed, but I don’t trust you to stay put while I clean up.” He smirked. She scowled. Kieran couldn’t help but smile at the pissed‐off frustration so evident on her face. He suspected he’d just thwarted some kind of escape attempt, but he didn’t dwell on that as he went to the sink to wash off the blood from his flesh. The wound had already closed, which was typical for a non‐fatal injury. By tomorrow night, no sign of it would still exist on his body. It was this vampiric trait that kept him looking like a healthy man in his mid‐thirties, the age he was when he was turned. It also gave rise to the immortality myth that made the foolish seek a vampire’s bite as if it

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle were the fountain of youth. They didn’t understand the costs, the price one’s heart paid to watch loved ones die while he remained young, unchanged on the outside. Devastated on the inside. After he cleaned the blood off, he donned his T‐shirt, finished fastening the button fly of his jeans, and went back to face the angry stares of his captive. He tried to not let her disheveled beauty or the siren’s call of her heartbeat affect him, but that proved to be a struggle. Her lips were still rosy from their earlier kisses, her hair mussed in adorable disarray. He wanted to kiss her again, hear her soft, sensuous sighs, and turn those heated glares of anger into a darkened, passionate gaze. But he feared he’d be the one bitten if he tried. Not that that didn’t appeal to him as well, he thought with a chuckle. “What’s so funny?” He sat on the edge of the bed and studied her face. It was so expressive that, though she obviously struggled to hide her thoughts, he could still see the anger and uncertain worry. She was rather cute when pissed, but the fear was another matter. He wasn’t human to her; he was a monster, something different to fear and hate. Ignoring her question, he asked one of his own. “Who’s the vampire killer?” She blinked. “You are, or so you said. But since you are what you claim to hunt, I figure that was all a lie.” She yanked at her binds. He narrowed his eyes. “I didn’t lie but as I also said before, you are more than you profess to be. I know you post videos on a blog, videos of you and a male partner who kills vampires.” She sneered and turned her face away, but not before he saw the surprised terror in her eyes. After a long moment, she squeezed her eyes shut tight and took a deep breath. “How did you identify me?” “Does it matter?” She looked at him. If looks could kill... “You did all of this, tracked me down, and fucked me just to get to
46
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle my br—my partner? Well, you’re too late.” He caught her slip, but didn’t mention it. “What do you mean by ‘too late’?” “You’ve had your fun, so fuck off.” He grabbed her upper arms and earned a heated glare. “Tell me.” “What do you think I mean, you bastard?” she shouted. “One of your murdering kind took care of the threat already.” Her admission surprised him into releasing his hold on her arms. He sat back in silence while he tried to determine the truth of her claim. Had some other vampire already killed her partner? Or was she just trying to protect her brother? The tears that welled in her eyes, which she struggled to hold back, convinced him she told the truth. “I’m not a murderer, and the Horde is not my kind. One of these days, I hope you’ll understand that not all vampires are alike. The crimes of one are not committed by all.” He reached toward her. She flinched, a fearful move that struck like a machete to his heart. “Don’t touch me.” How could he convince her that he meant her no harm? Although she turned from him, he ignored her command and tenderly cupped her cheek, his thumb swiping away a lone tear that escaped her lashes. “I’m not here to cause you pain.” He wasn’t here to harm her. He wanted to protect her. Without her partner, she was even more vulnerable to the Horde, and she didn’t even realize it. To ensure her safety, however, he’d now have to do something he knew she would misunderstand. Nothing he said would change that. She scoffed. “Just do what you came here to do then and leave.” He brushed his thumb across her full lower lip and waited for her to look him in the eye. Then he leaned forward, pressed his lips to hers, and felt her stiffen. She didn’t turn away though, so he continued the chaste kiss. Another tear dropped from her lashes to slide down her cheek. Running the fingers of one hand through her hair, he held her head still while he laid a gentle trail of kisses along that cheek, her jaw, and downward.
47
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Her whole body tensed. She knew what he planned. She wouldn’t understand why, would probably be furious, but he had no choice now. He had to do it. She wouldn’t allow him to follow her around without trying to kill him, and he couldn’t leave here without a way to keep track of her. The only solution was to taste her blood. He licked the fragile flesh of her neck, felt the protest of her rapid pulse beneath his lips. “Forgive me,” he whispered. His grip tightened on her hair. “No!” She bucked against her bindings, against him. Her fight was futile. Holding her head still, he sank his fangs into her neck. The taste of her blood filled his mouth, an elixir that called to his most primeval vampire nature. More than the coppery taste that humans can sense, her blood offered a savory buffet to his tongue. He wanted more, a physical need that waged war against his conscience. He could smell her fear mixed with forced arousal, a typical human reaction to a vampire’s seductive bite. He sucked harder, once, twice, knowing that each pull would be a titillating tug on the most erogenous parts of her body. He confirmed her body’s reaction to his bite by brushing his free palm across one breast to find the nipple hard and pebbled beneath the fabric. She whimpered. Her struggles weakened. His impulse to take more grew stronger but, after one more swallow, he forced himself to pull back. He lapped at the puncture wounds with his tongue, closing his eyes while he savored the salty flavor of her blood and skin. Assured the tiny wounds were closed and would heal well, he released her hair and moved around behind her. Her head fell forward. Her chest rose with each deep breath she took. Her heart raced, still healthy and whole. He reached for her wrists and began to loosen the binds that held them in place. When they were lax enough for her to get free, he retrieved his leather jacket and went to the door. Opening it, he looked back and saw her yank her hands free. She whipped her face around to glare at him, both feet still secured with the phone cord to the chair. A fresh tear

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle explored the unblemished curve of her cheek. He wanted to explain, but knew she wasn’t ready to listen to anything he’d have to say, which was confirmed with her next words. “Fuck you.” It would only piss her off more, but he couldn’t prevent the devilish smile that curved his lips. “Don’t worry, my dear. You can do that again...soon.” He pulled the door closed behind him, but that failed to stifle all of the curses she screamed at him as he left.

Chapter Seven Cheyenne strapped on her brother’s Ka‐Bar fighting knife, the largest of four she wore, and reached for her night‐vision binoculars. Dressed all in black, she donned a long coat to hide her weaponry before leaving the hotel room. After Kieran’s departure, she’d been unable to relax much, although she had showered and tried to sleep. As upset as she was over her encounter with the vampire, she tossed and turned and finally gave up. She was determined to not let him stop her from the hunt. It was one of the reasons she’d taken the speaking engagement—to do reconnaissance on the cemeteries in and around Baton Rouge. Who knew? Maybe she’d get lucky and find his lair. Still, she felt an icy chill along her spine as she crossed the street to retrieve the van, and her hands trembled after she got in, locked the doors, and reached for the steering wheel. Orange numerals, 2:38, illuminated the van’s interior with an eerie glow. The streets were dark, but far from deserted, which only proved the capitol city never slept. Stopped at an intersection, she glanced at the city map on which she’d circled the locations of the oldest cemeteries. Deciding to stake out the closest one, she drove there and parked a few blocks from the iron gates. Once there, she rested her head on the steering wheel, gathering her courage to get out of the vehicle, to move amidst the blackness in
50
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle search of vampires. She struggled with doubts and blamed Kieran for it. How could she not have known he was a vampire? Let herself succumb to his flattery, his seductive charisma. She struck the steering wheel with a fist. She didn’t need this shit; she needed to remain focused, devoted to one goal—killing vampires. All vampires. No second thoughts. No wavering. No hesitation that could get her killed. A loud buzz made her jump, an abrupt squeal escaping her mouth before she could find the source of the noise. Her heart raced. She dug in her pocket and pulled out her cell phone. 3:00 AM. The time to which she’d set her phone’s alarm just in case. Turning off the phone, she pocketed it and got out. Stay focused. After removing her long coat, she tossed it inside the vehicle and shut the door. She didn’t want anything to encumber her ability to fight or reach a weapon, but she also hoped it wouldn’t be necessary, at least not until the sun was high overhead. She took notice of the direction of the cool night breeze and crept toward a spot that would put her downwind. Avoiding the street lamps, which helped to illuminate a foggy landscape of ancient trees, Spanish moss, and above‐ground tombs, she hid at one corner of the cemetery where she would have the best possible view. The fog ebbed and flowed, eerie but not uncommon in the bayou country. The three‐quarters moon, muted by cloud cover, provided just enough light to make her nervous about the ability to remain hidden. But she refused to quit. She waited. Using her binoculars, she scanned the surroundings, especially the darker nooks and shadowy areas, and looked for any signs of the undead. Time ticked at a slow pace. The horizon grew orange. Though darkness still gripped the landscape, dawn approached. The adrenaline rush she normally got from such hunts was diminished as her mind wandered back to Kieran’s ludicrous claims. Maybe she should’ve taken the night off, contacted Val, and done some
51
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle research on Kieran, this vampire who seemed to contradict every fact she knew about the creatures. A vegetarian vampire wearing a cross, for crying out loud. Stay focused! She was just about to call it a night when movement caught her eye. Adjusting the binoculars, she saw it. Dressed in dark clothing, outdated and worn, it weaved through the mini‐city of gravesites. A bum or a vampire? She watched the mannerisms, tried to catch a glimpse of the face, the hands. Yes. It was a vampire all right. Its movements were too cautious and smooth to be an alcoholic or druggie down on his luck. And the hands…young and clean in appearance, not the type belonging to a person familiar with digging through garbage bins. This was it. She needed to follow it from a distance, yet close enough to identify its lair. Vampires tended to return to what was familiar. They’d reuse the same resting place time and again. If she could find it… Inching out of her hiding spot, she set her binoculars aside. She would retrieve them later. Right now, she had a vampire to track. As quietly as possible, she made her way deeper into the cemetery and kept the vampire in sight. It seemed unaware. A flutter and swish startled a gasp from her. She ducked behind a statue as a few bats took flight from the eave of a nearby tomb. She didn’t dare move or peek to see if the vampire turned around. Though she let loose with a string of curses inside her mind, outwardly she froze and listened for any sign that the vampire retraced its steps. Her hand settled around the grip of her Ka‐Bar at her hip. She closed her eyes and held her breath for a second. Maybe two. A frightening screech of laughter made her bolt. Eyes wide open, she didn’t have time to think. She swiped at the closest vampire and realized there were three. The one she’d followed and two more! A trap. “Some hunter,” said one of the vampires, the tallest and fiercest. He
52
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle leaped onto the top of a tomb and peered down at her. His voice became more sing‐song and menacing. “Beware the hunter who stalks the vamp. Beware lone hunter of our trap!” The others, one male, one female, roared with laughter. The pair circled her just out of reach while the speaker remained perched above them like a hawk on the hunt for easy prey. She continued to twist and turn. Keep them in sight. The Ka‐Bar and a second blade were in her hands at the ready. “Three against one, huh? Are you so weak and pathetic that you need help to take me down?” She spat the challenge at the tallest and more vocal of the trio and swung her Ka‐Bar, just missing one of the vamps. He leaped back a few feet and chuckled as if she’d proved his test of her defenses successful. “So, which one of you chicken‐shits wants to be the first to go poof?” She forced a grin and pointed her largest blade to the one on the rooftop. “How ‘bout you? Or do I scare you that much that you have to stay way up there and watch from a distance?” The vampire’s face contorted with rage. She believed she could handle one alone, but if they all attacked at once… The apparent leader screamed to the others who were closing in on her. “Back off.” The vampiress protested. “But, Marsalis said we’re to bring her to—” “I said the bitch is mine.” He launched himself at her. She didn’t even have time to swing her blade. One second, the vampire was headed straight for her. The next, he was ash falling at her feet. “What the…?” The cries of hell erupted around her. The two other vampires attacked something else. Their movements were so fast, Cheyenne caught only a kaleidoscope of colorful blurs amid the sounds of battle. A sudden yank on her hair made her blindly swipe with her Ka‐

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Bar. She caught the vampiress in the gut. The angry vamp let loose an animalistic cry. Blood poured from the large wound to soak her clothes. It wasn’t a fatal blow but severe enough to gain Cheyenne her freedom. The vamp bared her sharp fangs and curled her long‐nailed fingers into claws. A second cloud of ashes exploded nearby. The vamp’s gaze shot that way and back at her. She hissed and fled. In the blink of an eye, she was gone, leaving Cheyenne to face the new threat alone. Cheyenne spun toward the descending cloud of ash. Her heart and lungs succumbed to the adrenaline rush. Her hands trembled. She searched for…something. Friend or foe?

Chapter Eight “Show yourself,” she shouted with a bravado she didn’t feel. Out of the shadows, off to her right, a vampire stepped forth. “Kieran,” she whispered. Unfathomable relief engulfed her. She struggled against the compulsion to lower her knives. When he didn’t move any closer, she gave up the fight. Her hands dropped to her sides, but she didn’t sheath the weapons. “You’re unharmed?” he asked. She took stock of herself, noticed a slight scratch on her arm, a tiny blood smear, but nothing serious. She nodded. “I’m fine.” He had some scratches, too, above his left eyebrow and a bloody stain on his sleeve. As she stared, though, the wounds over his eye healed, leaving behind bits of dried blood as the only evidence of their prior existence. She should attack him, kill him for tying her up and biting her. But the anger she’d felt before was curiously absent. She couldn’t ignite it, not after he’d come to her rescue. “Why?” He didn’t pretend to misunderstand her question, but answered it in a calm manner. “Your vigilante endeavors have put you in danger. I’ve been sent to protect you.” “Protect me? You bit me!” He’d fucked her, too, but she couldn’t fault him for that. He’d only done what she’d invited him to do.
55
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle His expression held a hint of regret in his frown. “I know. It was necessary for me to track you…for your own protection.” “Necessary?” “You’ll suffer no ill effects from it. Trust me.” “Trust you? A vampire… Yeah, right.” With a sigh, he sat on some stone steps leading to the door of a massive family crypt—the name, Beauregard, etched in the granite façade. She now had the high ground, the advantage in battle. She didn’t take it. Instead, she put away the knives, leaned back against an angelic statue, and waited. She refused to ponder why she no longer felt threatened by him. He was a vampire, a killer with fangs and a thirst for blood. Hell, he’d bit her! That should’ve been enough for her to put a stake through his no‐good, undead heart, but she couldn’t. If he meant her harm, why save her from the fanged trio? Why not let them do his dirty work? No. He posed no danger to her. She knew it as well as she knew the sun rose in the east. Although she scoffed at the idea of trusting him, she found herself doing just that. As crazy as it seemed, she believed he’d been honest about his reasons for being here. The only questions that remained were who and why. “You said you were sent here. Sent by whom?” He shrugged. “Does it matter?” “Yes, it does to me,” she said, unable to hide her pique over his attempt to avoid answering her question. “Tell me.” His sudden smile was pure, cavalier arrogance. “Make me.” Frustrating arrogance. She pulled one of her knives and, without pause, flung it at him, missing his head by mere millimeters. The tip stuck in the tomb’s heavy wooden door, the handle briefly wobbling. “Tell—” He was on her before she had a chance to complete the command. He didn’t strike her but rather wrestled with her until he gained the upper hand, which didn’t take long, much to her dismay. He flung her around off balance until she was pressed against the wall of the Beauregard tomb,
56
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle her wrists imprisoned above her head in his fist, her neck held in his other. For a brief instant, she feared she’d been wrong about him. But he didn’t squeeze, although his grip was firm enough to keep her in place. And his eyes… They held no evil, no insane, animalistic fury like the kind she’d witnessed before in other vampires she’d vanquished. No. His were…passionate. The nearness and strength of his body were also enough to send a shock of adrenaline through her veins and heighten her desires, which only served to tick her off and increase her arousal even more. Damn, he smelled good…for a walking dead man. A sexy‐as‐sin, arrogant, walking dead man. “Someone needs to teach you—” She lifted her knee but missed the intended target. Worse, her attack backfired when he leaned his body against hers to prevent further such attempts. “—to not play with knives. Someone might get hurt.” She squirmed, but only managed to rub herself between a cold stone wall and a hard‐muscled, hot‐blooded vampire. If she could just get one hand free… “If that’s what it takes for you to see my point,” she gritted out. “Answer my question.” “Oh, I see your point,” he said before stunning her with a fast and furious kiss, which ended all too soon. “But your affinity for attacking me will only gain you a well‐deserved spanking, my bloodthirsty beauty.” In a flash, he sat on the steps once more and had her sprawled facedown across his thighs, her wrists captured in one fist at the small of her back. “No!” She grunted. “No. You. Don’t! Don’t you dare—” Smack. “Ow!” Smack, smack, smack. She panted and wiggled, bucked and shouted, all to no avail. His hand collided with her ass several more times. “Ssst‐stop.” Though she screamed the command, it lacked sincere authority or much force since
57
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle she struggled to catch her breath. Smack, smack. He paused, his large hand like an electric blanket over her stinging flesh despite the barrier of clothing between them. “No more trying to cut me, stab me, or slice me in two. Got it?” “If I’d wanted to stab you,” she said, albeit breathlessly, “I would not have missed.” “Hmm. Is that so?” He didn’t strike her any more. Rather his hand continued its soothing caress of her offended backside. Then, he released her and helped her to her feet. “Sadist,” she muttered with a frown while rubbing a palm over her smarting ass. “Bloodthirsty masochist,” he replied with an amused tone and answering smile. Her frown deepened. She never would’ve pegged herself as a masochist, but the wrestling had been…thrilling, and the initial pain from his swats had receded into a warmth that felt rather…good. Not that she’d ever admit it to him. In defense, she dropped her gaze to the bulge in his pants and laced her words with contempt. “Do you always get so excited over whipping someone?” “Do you always become this aroused after being spanked?” She huffed. “I most certainly am not—” “Careful, my dear. You can deny it all you want, but I can hear your pulse quicken, see the arousal in your eyes.” His gaze dropped to her chest. “And in a pair of hard, delicious nipples.” “Don’t flatter yourself.” She crossed her arms over her breasts. “It’s chilly.” Delicious? He cocked a brow and smiled at her obvious lie. Damned frustratingly arrogant man. He took a step toward her, lithe and predatory. She inched away, up the steps to the tomb, one hand rising to delay his advances. “Hold it right there, you…you…Vampire Valentino. Don’t come any closer.” He paused, grinned, and burst out laughing.
58
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle She released an unsteady breath. “I’m warning you.” Amid chuckles, he repeated, “Vampire Valentino… That’s priceless.” The rumble of his laughter was contagious. Recognizing the humor of the moment, she fought against the urge to smile, but her lips still twitched. Her body collided with the door behind her. Realizing she’d backed herself into a corner, she grew serious in an instant. By then it was too late. He took the top step and stood before her, so tall, dark, and provocative. He closed to within a couple of inches, filled her vision, and blocked out the rest of the world. His gaze captured hers and wouldn’t let go. Her breaths stalled in her throat. Her pulse skipped. With an attractive smile, he whispered, “You can’t hide it, chére. Not from me.” Without looking away, he reached for the blade sheathed beneath her arm, carefully slid it from its holder, and dropped it a few feet away. Next went her Ka‐Bar, along with any ability of her lungs to function. After a third blade sailed to the ground where it joined the rest, he asked, “Any others?” Since her fourth was still stuck in the door, low and off to her left, she shook her head. Without a word, he made short work of her straps; the holders joined her arsenal on the floor, followed by her belt. As his hands moved methodically over her body, unbuttoning her blouse, unzipping her pants, she closed her eyes and let her senses focus on his touch, the way he smelled… Mmm. The subtle sounds of his breathing. He didn’t remove her clothes so much as he moved them out of his way. The dull pops of his button fly joined the faint chirp of birds in the distance. Then, his large palms cupped her butt and slid to her thighs, lifting her, spreading her. As he picked her up, he stepped over her pants, which were still bundled like makeshift cuffs around her boots, and moved between her thighs. “Hang on,” he murmured before his lips ensnared hers and his
59
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle body pinned her against the door. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on amid a storm of sensations that erupted in her body when he simultaneously stabbed his tongue into her mouth and thrust his impressive cock home, deep in her pussy. Her legs bent over his forearms while his hands kneaded and held her ass. He didn’t go slowly this time, didn’t let her set the pace. No, he took her with an unyielding tenacity she’d never before experienced. A faint voice in her mind reminded her that this was no ordinary man. He was a vampire, a monster. Dominant and dangerous. But the woman inside her focused on the masculine hardness of his broad shoulders, strong arms, and powerful legs—the last of which he used perfectly to move the most potent evidence of his manhood in and out of her body with erotic precision. His hair made a soft bed for her fingers, his arms a warm cocoon for her body, and his mouth, his tongue, a hot lure to her lonely soul. He bucked into her with a vigorous rhythm, and broke from their kisses only long enough to allow her to suck in a healthy dose of oxygen. She came once after a shockingly deep thrust, but he swallowed her scream and continued to fuck her against the door. Her back rubbed the hard wood, her shirt the only barrier between her flesh and the door’s rough surface, but somehow the raw nature of his strokes made her want more. He released her mouth to plant a trail of kisses along her jaw line. “Again,” he said, a husky command in her ear. “Come again.” She panted for air and squeezed her eyes shut tight as he pushed her to new heights of pleasure. “I—Oh, God. I…” “I need…” He ground his groin against her clit. His lips brushed her skin. “I have to…” “Yes, please,” she said, unsure what she begged for—just knowing that she needed more, wanted more. His teeth pierced her neck, and she cried out. Her arousal doubled at the bite, tripled with each fierce suck. She moaned. Her nipples beaded. Her clitoris tingled. Her pussy

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle contracted, the inner muscles gripping his cock, which filled her, stretched her, and throbbed inside. Her orgasm exploded, and it didn’t stop at one blast. It pulsed with every draw of his mouth on her tender skin, each swirl of his tongue, sending wave after wave of sparklers throughout her body. Her mind hung suspended in a euphoric subspace even as he held her impaled on his cock, pinned between his body and the door. His hips pumped his cock farther into her pussy—in, out, in again, all to a consistent, stalwart beat that battered her overwhelmed senses into orgasmic submission. The seductive pull of his bite was so much stronger than before, now when their bodies were united as one. He sucked harder on her neck with devastating effects on her most erogenous zones—her clit, her nipples, her pulse. She couldn’t help but succumb to the intense titillation. Her awareness became acute. She felt everything, reveled in it, and longed for it. The sweet friction of his cock sliding into her moist depths. The delicious rub of his body against her clit. The addictive suction of his mouth on her flesh. She didn’t want it to end, pleaded for, “More,” although her limbs grew weaker, her eyelids heavy. Then he reared back, fangs exposed and cock buried to the hilt, as he came long and hard, deep into her womb. She climaxed a third time and collapsed in his arms, her head on his shoulder. Weakly she pressed a kiss to his neck and heard him groan.

Chapter Nine Kieran leaned over to pick up Cheyenne’s pile of weaponry, debating with himself whether it was wise or safe to return them to her. A glance her way told him she was on the last button of her blouse and that she was still a bit overwhelmed—her buttons were misaligned. He could relate. He was as stunned as she seemed to be. The sun was up. Its rays weaved through the trees and lanes that divided the above‐ground vaults. Even in the shadow of the tomb’s portico, he felt…spent. And he wasn’t foolish enough to attribute it all to the sun’s effects. He’d had sex with plenty of women over the years, even drank from some on occasion, but he’d never been so drawn to one before. Shit! He’d fucked the woman in a cemetery. Not just any woman, but Cheyenne, a vampire slayer in her own right. He fucked and fed off Cheyenne in a cemetery. “I’m so going to hell,” he muttered. “What was that?” “Nothing.” He turned to face her and held out the knives, all re‐sheathed in their corresponding holders. “Thanks.” As she donned the rest of her garb, he noticed the tell‐tale bite wound on her neck. Although the puncture marks healed quickly, thanks to his saliva, the bruising effect of his suction would remain for a while

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle like a hickey left by an adolescent prom date. He turned away and looked up, noticing the family name carved into the stone. I’m going to hell, and the Beauregard ancestors are my witnesses. * * * * * Anessa approached Marsalis with caution. The head vampire of their coven was well known for an explosive temper. A vampire so ancient no one in the coven recalled a time before him, Marsalis was a worthy leader—ruthless and invincible. Dressed in garb more suited to an antebellum reenactment, his tall, imposing figure stood with his back to her, but that gave her little relief. She knew he was aware of her presence. Marsalis always knew. She ignored the whispers and stares of the others in the large space and cleared her throat, the sound echoing off the walls of the once grand ballroom, now worn and ravaged by time. The moment he turned toward her, she dropped to one knee, head bowed. Silence made her insides quiver. She rubbed her palms on her thighs. “Where is the human?” His tone, like terror unleashed, turned that quiver into a full‐bodied shudder. “I was unable to retrieve her, Sire. There was another…” “Another slayer? But her partner was vanquished already. Were those rumors untrue?” “I didn’t see a human partner. It was another vampire who came to her aid.” “Gregory? Neal?” She took a deep breath. “Dead, Sire. The other vampire killed them.” “Dead?” he shouted. The volume made her jolt and others around them take steps back. “I sent three of you! Three against two—one a mere human—and still you fail me. They’re dead, the human is lost to us and, yet, somehow you survived to tell me this?” She rushed to explain. “But I— Kieran was too strong, too fast. We
63
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle couldn’t—” His hand shot up, palm out, and she winced in fear of the strike that never came. “Kieran? Did you say Kieran?” “Yes, Sire. I heard the woman call him that.” She didn’t volunteer that she’d fled to the other side of the cemetery before stopping to hear the woman call out that name. It obviously meant something to Marsalis, judging by the toothy grin that spread across his face. And if that knowledge saved her undead life, then she’d thank her lucky stars for her vampiric hearing with a hearty toast of AB‐positive. “And you say he protected her?” “Yes, Sire.” She lowered her gaze once more. “Does this knowledge please you?” “Yes, it does. It confirms my suspicions that the online slayer is working with the Order after all.” She sighed with relief. That was the reason he’d ordered them to kidnap the human in the first place. She knew, after learning of the team through rumor of one’s demise, he hoped to force the surviving slayer to give up the names and locations of others in the Order. He paced a few steps away from her before turning to face her once more, the dreaded whip now in his hand. He swung fast. The thin leather sliced across her back forcing a cry from her lips. “That doesn’t excuse the fact that you lost the human.” He swung again and popped her across the left cheek. She cowered before him. At the scent of blood from her fresh wounds, the other vampires shuffled around her, their hunger and excitement evident. But not too close; they didn’t want to feel the lash any more than she did. “I can find her,” Anessa screamed. “I’ve tasted her blood!” It was only a few drops from when she’d scratched the human, which she sucked from the tips of her own nails, so it wouldn’t have the full range of tracking that a bite to the neck would, but it was all she had to offer. It should buy her some time to regain his good graces. Marsalis held up his empty hand and lowered the one with the whip. A collective groan of disappointment passed over the group.
64
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “You’ve earned a temporary reprieve.” His footsteps echoed in the chamber as he drew nearer. His palm settled on her head. He remained silent until she looked up at him. “Disappoint me again, and I’ll slice you apart and feed your blood to my pets.” She glanced at the two vicious rogue vamps chained to one wall. They’d been force‐fed victims’ blood beyond death’s final heartbeat so many times, they’d gone insane with bloodlust, addicted to the kill. She swallowed hard and looked away. She would not fail him. “Yes, Sire.” * * * * * Cheyenne glanced in the rearview mirror at Kieran lying on her mattress in the back of the van. He’d driven his own motorcycle as she returned to the hotel to gather her things and check out. Then, he’d continued to follow her for the hour and a half it had taken them to return from Baton Rouge to the outskirts of New Orleans, but upon entering the Crescent City, he’d signaled for her to pull over in a shopping center where he parked his motorcycle and climbed into the back of her van. She realized that, although he could walk about in the daytime, he’d still become weaker as the day progressed. At least he appeared weakened so long as he was exposed to direct sunlight. She didn’t ponder too long the trust that he expressed just by willingly getting into her van, a slayer’s van, but she had noticed and appreciated it. She needed nourishment so, while he rested in the shadowy confines of her home on wheels, she made one stop to get something to eat and stretch her legs. She’d been starving and decided that lack of sleep, a lot of hot sex, and no‐fun battles with vampires could wear a woman out, although the food and a super‐sized caffeine fix helped. By the time she’d returned and pulled out onto the road again, he’d revived and now lay with head propped on palms and booted feet crossed at the ankles. While she drove to, of all places, a church. “Tell me again. Why are we going to this church?”
65
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “You’ll see soon enough.” She sighed and fisted the steering wheel. With a glance in the mirror, she pressed the gas and merged with highway traffic. “Can you not answer one single question without evading?” “That wasn’t evading.” “It wasn’t an answer, either.” He chuckled. She ground her teeth. Impossible man. “I should kick your vampire butt out on the curb.” “But you like my vampire butt.” She did, but she’d be damned before she’d agree with him. He was too cocky as it was. “Not if you don’t answer a single question I ask.” “Okay. Ask me anything, one question, and I promise to answer it.” “How’d you become a vampire?” “Except that one.” “You lying—” She pressed the brake and pulled the van to the shoulder of the highway. A horn blared. Turning off the engine and her hazard flashers on, she looked at him over her shoulder with a frustrated glare. “You said anything. You can’t change the rules to suit you just because you don’t like the question.” “How about I answer your earlier question?” he asked, propping himself up on elbows. “No.” She’d find out why they were headed to the church when they got there. She wanted to know more about the man, the vampire she let ride in the back of her van. It wasn’t fair that he knew so much about her, and she knew next to nothing about him. And if he couldn’t open up a little, he could get out and walk to the damn church. “Answer the question or hitch a ride with someone else.” After a moment’s hesitation, he said, “I was turned against my will during a battle between a woman I’d loved and the vampire who’d sired her.” She frowned. “I’m sorry.” He nodded. What more could he say? What was done was done.
66
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Her pity didn’t help. Her apology couldn’t change it, and it wasn’t her fault in the first place. “How? When?” He’d known more questions would come. It was inevitable. Humans were always too curious for their own good. He’d proven that himself centuries ago when he’d first approached the flamboyant opera singer with the contralto voice after a performance in Lully’s Cadmus and Hermione. “That’s more than one question.” She blushed. Her gaze dropped. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t pry.” She reached for the key to start the engine. He chose to answer anyway. “The when was 1691 in Paris. The how…” He took a deep breath. It had been a long time since he’d spoken with anyone about Julia. “…was with death’s kiss.” “1691?” Cheyenne left the keys in the ignition and crawled out of the driver’s seat to kneel on the edge of the mattress where he lay. “My God! The history you must’ve seen since then. So many people and places. I can’t even imagine what it must’ve been like for you.” He plopped back down, head in palms, and stared at the vehicle’s ceiling. “Yes, I’ve seen a lot.” Alone. The friends and loved ones he watched die, one by one, until there was no one left on earth who’d known him when he’d lived. People he’d kept tabs on from a distance—family who thought he’d died at age thirty‐ five, having vanished without a trace. Acquaintances that had turned against him when they realized he was…a monster. “You don’t sound very happy about it.” She put a hand on his leg, a soft caress of comfort that drew his gaze to hers. “Who was she? The woman you loved…” “Julia de Maupin, a popular opera singer for Le Grand Monarque.” “Le what?” “King Louis XIV. On stage, she was spectacular.” He could almost close his eyes and envision her again, dressed in sparkling extravagance… Almost hear her voice raised in song, so pure and sultry. “Radiant. Backstage she was reserved, shy. Mysterious. She was sought after by
67
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle many. But in private, she became my mistress, though I would’ve wed her had she agreed.” “Oh.” He reached with one hand to take hold of hers. “It was a long time ago.” Her gaze shot to his. “Oh, I know. I’m not— It’s not that—” He smiled at having flustered her and let her off the hook by continuing. “She declined my request as I’m sure she had many others before me. And for good reason, as it also happened that she was a vampiress.” “You didn’t know?” He shook his head. “What I didn’t know at first, aside from her penchant for blood, was that her dalliance with me was unknown to her sire. His discovery of me did not go well.” The events of that night, centuries ago, replayed in his mind as if it occurred only moments before. “Marsalis, no!” Julia said, fear evident in her unique aqua eyes. Kieran stared at his mistress, his lover—his beloved—as she threw herself at the feet of the monster who’d attacked them. Her voluminous skirts flared around her, the delicate lace and silk of her bodice torn in the scuffle to expose even more of her luscious form than usual. The pearls of the necklace he’d given her seconds earlier rolled about the floor amid the pools of blood from his open wounds across his chest, back, legs, and arms. The pain was excruciating, in his heart and his body. His own blood soaked his shredded clothes. He could hardly see anything. Still, he tried to crawl toward her, to shield her from the monster. His pulse grew unsteady, his breathing labored. So much blood… The whip in the monster’s hand slithered along the floor as he moved. Julia clung to the vampire’s leg, pleading with him for mercy, not for her, but for Kieran. “Please, I beg you. Do not kill him. Kieran doesn’t know.” “Doesn’t know?” He looked at Kieran. There was no mercy, only hatred in the monster’s eyes. “Don’t be fooled, Julia. He knows exactly what we are.” He displayed sharp fangs to punctuate a menacing grin. The whistle was Kieran’s one warning before the whip sliced a new stripe in his already battered flesh.
68
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Please! Marsalis, please stop. You’re killing him.” He dropped the whip and dragged her over to Kieran where he forced her face closer to him. Then he jerked Kieran’s head back with a fistful of hair, which caused Kieran to wail with fresh pain. “Bite him!” he ordered Julia. “I can’t.” She tried to pull away. “You do it, or I will. You’re a vampire. He’s food!” He shoved her closer. “Do it.” Her sharp teeth pierced Kieran’s neck, and he stiffened from the shock. She sucked gently, once or twice…thrice, before she pulled away with an anguished cry. Marsalis laughed. “You see? You are what you are, my pet. You cannot change that, so feast.” “I can’t. He’ll die.” “He’s as good as dead already.” He went back to retrieve his whip. She scrambled after him. “If you let him live, Marsalis, I’ll go with you. I’ll do anything.” “No…” Kieran’s voice was weak, but still he had to try. Even though Marsalis’ words haunted him. He’d said, “…what we are,” not what I am, and he’d proven his point. Kieran believed he was better off dead, but he didn’t want to see her enslave herself to that monster. He tried to reach her, to see her, but that became harder to do as his eyelids swelled from the beating he’d received. He clawed at the floor, his fingers finally touching and grabbing for her skirts. “Oh, you will go with me, Julia,” Marsalis said. “I made you what you are. You belong to me.” Kieran heard heavy footsteps leading away from him. The whistle of the whip made him rigid with dread. The crack of that whip one final time made him jerk. The pain was unbearable. What made it worse was the sound of Julia’s beautiful voice—a voice that should be singing, but was sobbing instead. “Your tears are useless,” Marsalis said. “Your lover dies. Hear it? Death’s rattle… Yes, he will soon breathe his last. Say your goodbyes, Julia. There is nothing left for you here.”
69
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Julia fell toward Kieran, rolling him over and trying to cradle his head in her lap. The movements caused him more pain, and he cried out—a sound more like that of a wounded animal than a man. Her tears spattered his bruised face and left his heart torn asunder. “Forgive me, mon cher,” she whispered before she bent to kiss him. The exchange of blood happened quick and unseen. She’d bitten her own tongue and filled her mouth with blood before pressing her lips to his, opening her mouth to his. The kiss was brief, but it was enough to finish what her sire had started, whether Kieran wanted it that way or not. His death as a human was certain. His life as a vampire had only just begun.

Chapter Ten Cheyenne had scooted closer to him while he recounted his last moments on earth as a human. She drew him back from his musings with a tender caress of her hand on his cheek. “I’m so sorry.” Her eyes held a wealth of sympathy, concern, and understanding. “I’m sure she only did what she thought was best. I mean, she gave you a chance to live on, maybe not as a human, but centuries later you’re still around…to help people.” He hadn’t meant to reveal so much, but now that he had, it seemed right. He’d been betrayed by a vampire, turned into the monster he’d once feared, and somehow found a way to live on to continue the fight. She’d suffered horrific tragedies at the hands of a rogue vampire and survived to fight on, too. Then, realization dawned. He no longer saw fear or disgust in her eyes when she looked at him. He saw compassion for another lost soul— not a monster, but a man. Staring into her eyes made him feel…human. He lifted his own hand to cup her cheek and draw her closer. He let his gaze explore her face and settle on her lips, slightly parted, before he pulled her to him. Their lips touched, soft at first, then with more pressure as he swept his tongue inside. Her fingers slid from his cheek to cradle his nape, a silent display of her own determination to keep the kiss going. He fell back on the mattress and rolled her beneath him without ever pulling his lips from hers. She moaned into his mouth. He gave a
71
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle deep‐throated growl in reply and dueled with her tongue while his hands blindly fumbled with her clothes…and those damn sheaths strapped to her body. He broke from the kiss only long enough to accuse, “You wear too damn many clothes.” “So domph,” was all she could get out since he kissed her again. When he finally released her lips to plant kisses along her jaw, she said, “So do you.” She yanked at his clothes. Cars whizzed by outside. Large trucks rumbled past. A siren sounded in the distance, and a soft tick‐tock of the hazard flashers continued to provide a steady rhythmic sound inside. The sun beamed down but in the shadowy confines of the van, none of it mattered to him. They separated as if by silent agreement. He stripped off his shirt and tossed it over his helmet on the floor next to his jacket. After another second or two, he had his fly open, and his pants and underwear shoved down. She removed her boots, pants, and panties, leaving her shirt unbuttoned but still on. Over her shoulders hung the straps to the underarm sheath with the blade snapped in place. The rest lay in a pile with their discarded clothes. Kneeling before him—her creamy thighs parted and the thinnest strip of flesh visible between the opened panels of her shirt—she was the sexiest, most erotic vision he’d ever laid eyes on. Sweet seduction with a hint of danger. She reached for the buckle of the shoulder straps, but he stopped her by fisting her lapels and tugging her toward him. Her gaze widened with surprise. “Leave it on.” Her kiss‐swollen lips parted, but no words came out. Instead, she nodded. Again they dropped to the mattress. He rolled her beneath him and picked up with the kiss where they’d left off. With his hips and thighs, he nudged her legs apart and settled his body between them. While her hands roamed his bare back, he grabbed and kneaded her breasts, slipped
72
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle his hand beneath her shirt and pulled the cups of her bra out of his way. She bent her legs and bucked her hips against his cock. He grunted at her obvious demand, shifted, and slid into her moist, hot pussy. “Better?” he asked, his lips next to her ear, his nose nuzzling her hair. “God, yes.” He chuckled and pumped his hips, driving his cock deeper into her warm depths. She clung to him, her heels digging into his thighs. Her hands, splayed over his back and shoulders, slid down to grab his ass. Her nails bit into his flesh, which made him groan, and he ground his body harder against hers. He claimed her mouth once more, kissed her with renewed vigor until they were both breathless. Rearing up, he took a deep, much‐needed breath and gazed at her face, watched her eyelids droop, her eyes darken with desire. She raised her hand to brush her fingers across his chest and stared back at him with unveiled arousal. Her tongue darted out to lick her lips. He gritted his teeth. His heart beat erratically. His cock throbbed inside her body. Insistent. Needy. He reached beneath her knees, draped her legs over each arm, and forced them up as he fell forward to take his weight once more on his hands. The new angle enabled deeper penetration, and he took full advantage with a single hard stroke in her pussy. Her mouth opened and her eyes closed in response to the sudden thrust of his cock into her womb. She clawed at his shoulders for purchase. The rapid pulse at the base of her neck called to his darker nature, drew his gaze down. His fangs lengthened to razor‐sharp points, but he kept his lips closed. “Pull your shirt open,” he ordered, his tone more harsh and urgent than he intended. But she didn’t seem to mind. She yanked the two sides in opposite directions to expose her breasts, lifted by the bunched‐up bra he’d pulled down earlier. Her nipples were hard little nubs, and her chest rose with each frantic breath she took.
73
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He bucked his hips, driving his cock into her body and watching her breasts jiggle with each impact. He bent down, kissed her, and was surprised when she poked her tongue into his mouth. He jerked back from the kiss and dipped his head to nuzzle her jaw and neck. He didn’t want her to feel his fangs. Not yet. Not that way. She pressed her head against the mattress, arching her neck and back. The move thrust her chest toward him, provided unrestricted access to her slender, delicate neck. The urge to drink from her grew into an impossible need. Compelled by his hunger, his lust to be one with the woman beneath him, he licked a path downward until he could suck one taut nipple into his mouth. Her fingers found purchase in his hair as she held him to her and let him suckle at her breast. He circled the tip with his tongue, his pumps of his cock shallow but steady. Then he drove hard into her, once to the hilt, and sank his teeth into her breast. Her blood bathed his tongue. His cock erupted inside her womb. The orgasm was so intense it shook every muscle in his body. She screamed and fisted his hair, but she didn’t try to push him away. Instead, she held him closer, so he sucked with greater force and drank her heady elixir. Her cunt milked him. Her thighs trembled along his sides, and her back arched her breast against his mouth. Although the vampire inside him raged for him to take all she offered, the man he was knew he couldn’t drink much. He’d already bitten her twice before within a short period of time. She wasn’t a vampire. She couldn’t survive too many repeated feedings if he gorged himself on her blood, so he licked the fresh wounds closed and kissed her hardened nipple. Her hands fell from his head when he moved to reposition his arms. Her legs, no longer held up by his arms, collapsed to either side of his body. His cock, albeit softer, remained embedded inside her slick cunt until he pushed up to sit back on his knees.
74
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He eyed the woman sprawled out before him and grinned. “Feel better?” he asked with a teasing tone. “Mmm,” was her only answer. He popped her on one thigh, which jolted her upright. She blinked at him and frowned. “What’d you do that for?” He shrugged. “You seem to respond well to spankings.” “You could’ve just said get up.” He leaned over and gave her a peck on the lips. “And miss an opportunity to see that frown turn into a smile? I think not.” He kissed her again, once on the lips then on the tip of her nose. She gave him a crooked, tight smile until he blew her another kiss. She rolled her eyes and grinned. “You’re impossible.” He bit back the chuckle and cleaned up, not an easy task in the tighter confines of the van. She chose to dig through her suitcase and don a fresh change of pants and tennis shoes instead of the boots. She kept the same shirt and the one knife in its sheath, but left the others piled on the floor next to the mattress. “I meant to ask earlier, before we got distracted—” “Is that what happened?” She swatted him on the arm. “I’m being serious here. You called her sire Marsalis?” “Yes.” All humor left him. “I’ve heard that name. Earlier, at the cemetery, one of the vampires said it.” Kieran knew. He’d heard the vampire, too, just before he struck the first fatal blow. It was why he was taking Cheyenne to the church, or having her take him to be more accurate. Father Hardwin and the Order needed to know that Marsalis was in the area. “Yes, I know,” was all Kieran would say. After silence stretched to an awkward length, she squeezed his hand, moved back to the driver’s seat, and started the van. A short time later, they arrived at the church. Father Hardwin seemed somewhat surprised by the sight of
75
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Cheyenne, or maybe it was the fact that she was with Kieran and he was still alive, in an undead sort of way. “Surprised to see me again, Father?” “Not at all. Not at all. Come in, please.” He motioned them into his office and quickly moved stacks of books out of a couple of chairs to provide seating. “Are you hungry? Can I get you some refreshments?” “No, thank you,” she answered. “I stopped and picked up some food on the way here.” “I’m not hungry,” Kieran said with a teasing smile. “Okay.” The priest took his seat opposite them. “To what do I owe this visit?” “Marsalis,” Kieran answered without preamble, earning a subdued, wary look from the priest. “He’s back and is after Cheyenne. We need to alert the others to be on the lookout for any increase in rogue activity.” “I see. I can do that and, of course, find a suitable safe place for her to stay until—” “Forgive me, Father, for the interruption,” Cheyenne butted in, “but I’m perfectly capable of seeing to my own safety. And I already have a place to stay.” At that bit of news, the priest turned narrowed eyes onto Kieran, making him want to squirm in his chair. He hadn’t arranged for her to sleep, uh, stay with him once they got back to New Orleans, although that seemed to be the priest’s suspicions. It wasn’t that bad of an idea, come to think of it. He had better security measures there than most federal buildings in the country. And, well, he had already slept with her, sort of; they didn’t actually sleep, though. He turned from the priest and glanced at Cheyenne. “You do?” “Yes. I can stay with my sister‐in‐law.” “That’s not a good idea,” Kieran said before Father Hardwin could. Cheyenne got defensive. “Why not? Because you didn’t think of it?” “No, because it’s not safe. By going there you could endanger another human. Is that what you want?”
76
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Cheyenne scoffed. “They won’t find me there. There’s nothing to connect me to her.” “Except your deceased brother.” She frowned at the reminder. “Be that as it may, it’s unlikely they even know who I am or my brother. They got lucky in Baton Rouge. That’s all. So, I’m not staying here or in some convent just to appease your misguided, Don Quixote complex.” “Don—” “I’m a grown woman. I’ve taken care of myself for years since my husband died. I see no reason to change that now just because you think some psycho vamp named Marsalis is after me. The only reason they found me in Baton Rouge was because I fell for their trap at the cemetery. They’ve no way of finding me at Val’s.” The priest’s face turned from him to her to him again as if watching a ping pong match with avid curiosity. “Mrs. Logan,” Father Hardwin began. “Please, call me Cheyenne.” He smiled. “Cheyenne, then. Kieran is correct in his desire to exercise caution. Marsalis is a very dangerous vampire, and he’s resourceful. The Order has been trying to locate him for centuries. One moment he appears; the next he vanishes into legend.” He turned to Kieran. “Shall I call in reinforcements?” Kieran nodded. “I think we’ll need it. Whatever he’s up to, he’s not working alone this time. He sent three vamps after Cheyenne already. And he knows we’re on to him now, since one got away.” “Okay.” “Is Tristan still in the area?” A fellow vampire who was even older than Kieran, Tristan was a real badass and not someone Kieran would invite over for dinner, but he was a damn good person to have on your side in a fight with unfair odds. And Marsalis never played fair. “I believe so. I’ll check with his scout.” Scouts were what Father Hardwin was to Kieran, a vampire’s human contact in the Order. “What’s this Order thing you mentioned? Is that who you work for?” Cheyenne asked, her gaze on the priest.
77
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He gave her a gentle, fatherly smile. “I work for a much higher power than the Order. So, no, but I do work with them. The Order is a…brotherhood of sorts. A group of humans who accept vampires as an important part of life’s balance—” He held up a hand when it appeared she meant to object. “And we assist vampire’s like Kieran here in pursuing the Horde, vampires who have gone feral.” She glanced at Kieran, who said, “I told you we’re not all bad.” “That’s debatable,” she muttered, but there was no real anger or offense behind her tone. Her remark amused him. “You didn’t seem to object earlier—” “Kieran…” The warning came from her through gritted teeth. He chuckled and kept silent. Father Hardwin, ever the diplomat, reserved any remarks and chose instead to give Kieran a look that spoke volumes. He needed to revisit the confessional soon. “I believe it was a feral vampire who killed your husband and child,” the priest said, turning back to Cheyenne. “I knew your husband and am sorry for your loss. But I must tell you that no vampire in his right frame of mind would risk exposure to break into a home and feed off an infant. Feral vampires, however, are known for the ultimate loss of inhibitions.” Her expression evolved as he spoke, changing from stunned to sorrowful to resolved. “When humans are first turned,” Kieran explained, “the hunger for blood is great.” She shuddered. “I don’t think I could ever do that. Drink blood from another human’s neck.” Kieran studied her and refused to dwell on how much her obvious revulsion hurt him. “I mean to suck someone dry like that.” She made a face and shook her head. So it was the taking of life she objected to? “Not all vampires feed off humans,” Kieran said, watching her reaction. “Some feed only from their sires. It adds a certain dynamic to the relationship.”
78
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Her gaze collided with his until Father Hardwin cleared his throat and spoke up. “The main thing to remember,” he said, “is that vampires don’t need to drink much to survive, just enough to sate their thirst. Newly turned vampires are more susceptible to the lust to gorge.” Kieran said, “That’s why it’s important for their sires to be there to train them to survive and adapt, without taking human lives. If a vampire tastes death, drinks until the victim’s heart stops, it causes something similar to a narcotic high—instant and very addictive.” Her gaze returned to him. “Have you ever…?” “I know some who did.” He’d had the unenviable duty of tracking down one of his best friends, if one could consider best friends possible among vampires. “But, to answer your question… No, I haven’t.” Her sigh of relief was small, almost imperceptible, but he noticed it. She said, “This Marsalis character doesn’t sound like he’s insane or feral—whatever you call it. You all speak of him as if he were a shrewd adversary.” “He is,” Kieran answered. “Marsalis is the type of vampire who sires such rogues for the Horde.” The priest added, “The Horde is what we call the often unorganized population of vampires gone rogue, but not all are feral. Some are highly intelligent vampires who use feral fledglings like pawns to accomplish their own personal goals.” “I see.” She caressed the handle of her Ka‐Bar. “Marsalis doesn’t train newly turned vamps in the dangers of taking lives, so they unwittingly become feral, and by then it’s too late to save them.” The priest added, “And their turning jeopardizes the safety of humans and other vampires alike, which is why the Order exists, and why we sent Kieran to make contact with you and your partner.” “About that,” Kieran said, “the male slayer in the videos was Cheyenne’s brother.” “Was?” “Mark was murdered,” she said. “By a vampire.” Her backbone
79
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle stiffened, and she straightened in the chair. “Oh. I’m terribly sorry.” The priest patted one of her hands, which was fisted on her thigh. “All the more reason for you to remain somewhere safe and to remove that video—” “I’m staying at my sister‐in‐law’s. What video?” “The one we used to identify you.” Her brow furrowed. She turned her gaze toward Kieran. “The last one you posted,” he told her. “You drop the camera, and your profile is visible for a brief instant.” “It was all a blur, I thought….” Her words drifted off as she realized the impact of the information. Then, she shot up from her chair. “I need to get to Val’s, get my computer set up, and—” “Cheyenne,” Kieran began, but she wasn’t listening. “I’ve got to tell her, to warn her.” She started to make her way to the door until his hand on her wrist prevented it. “What?” “That’s not a good idea.” “Look, I don’t have time to argue with you. If they can identify me, then they can identify my family. They’re all I have left. You can call in the FBI, the State Police, or Superman for all I care, but I am not running to hide in the home of some total stranger and leave them alone and unprotected.” “I was going to suggest you stay at my place. We can have Val picked up—” “And her kids. I have two nephews.” Kieran hesitated a second. Children were a curious complication. They tended to explore and get into places where they didn’t belong, but he could see they were important to Cheyenne. He’d think of something. “And her sons,” he agreed. “I’m sure Father Hardwin could arrange to have someone from the Order take them to a safe house.” “I can see to it personally,” the priest offered. She wavered, her teeth gently biting her bottom lip. “If you’re sure?” Kieran slid his hand down to interlace his fingers with hers. “Positive.”
80
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle She gave him a small smile. He understood her concern, but all would be well as soon as they found and disposed of Marsalis. “Let’s go then,” he said. “Father, you’ll call us when…?” “Absolutely.” She tugged her hand free. “First, is there a restroom nearby?” She glanced at them with a shy, I’m‐sorry‐but‐I‐can’t‐piss‐on‐trees expression. “Yes, of course. Turn down the hall to the right. The door is the third one on your left just past the water fountain.” “Thanks. I’ll be right back.” While Kieran waited for her to complete a run to the ladies’ room, he sat back down and faced the wrath of a priest. “What are your intensions toward that child?” Father Hardwin asked. The wrinkles marring his forehead were even more pronounced when accompanied by the frown he now wore. “You make me sound like a pedophile, Father. Cheyenne is a grown woman, quite capable of making decisions on her own.” “Yes, and you are still too old for her.” Kieran laughed. “I’m not ready for retirement just yet.” “Kieran, I know you. You have a lust for…well, if not life, certainly experiencing life’s sexual excesses. I do not want to see that woman hurt. She’s been through quite enough already.” Kieran’s expression sobered. He had no intention of hurting Cheyenne. “I’ll take care of her.” The priest leaned against his desk and folded his hands. “I know you will protect her. It’s her heart I’m more concerned about. ‘Faith, hope, and love… The greatest of these is love.’” “I know, Fa—” The faint, familiar cranking of an engine outside stopped his words. He bolted from the chair and ran outside, with the priest in his wake, just in time to see Cheyenne’s van turn right and disappear out of sight. “Damn it to hell! God save me from stubborn women!” He paused, glanced at the priest, and said, “Sorry, Father.” “You’re forgiven. Just go after her.” Kieran looked around and cursed again, only this time in his mind.

Chapter Eleven Anessa caught the faint scent of the human the moment she got out of the car at the cemetery. She was glad it hadn’t dissipated entirely during the day while they waited for the sun to start its decline toward the horizon. It hadn’t set yet, but none of them wanted to risk running into the slayer and her vampire protector while weakened by the midday sun. The strongest scent came from an area near a tomb belonging to the Beauregard family. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath of air. “So, where is she?” asked one of her more impatient companions. Anessa slapped him across the face, causing the vampire to snarl. At least she hadn’t been foolish and scratched him. Drawing his blood would further dilute the human’s scent and make her task that much more difficult. “Shut up, Craig. I have to regain the connection. That takes time.” “Not that much time,” he grumbled under his breath, but he also took a precautionary step back until he stood closer to the other two and well out of her reach. “Stand there and try to not look so damn suspicious.” None of them looked like mourners who were there to grieve a lost loved one. She stepped closer to the doorway of the tomb and tried again. Such blood links weren’t constant, regardless of the amount of blood obtained. A vampire would go insane if that were the case, considering how many humans provided such sustenance over the course of a vamp’s undead lifetime. For the vamp to locate a blood source, 83
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle concentration was a must. He or she had to actively seek out the link and reconnect, like turning on radar for a few sweeps to pinpoint a target or the path it had once taken. The connection to the slayer was very weak, but it was enough to get Anessa’s feet moving in the direction of the road. With a hand out, she walked while scenting the air. The invisible trail reached a dead end at the curb where a fresh oil stain indicated a vehicle had been parked within the past several hours. “Well?” This question came from Dagger. That wasn’t his real name; no one knew his given name. Everyone called him Dagger because of his fetish for sharp objects. Slapping him wouldn’t be as satisfying for her, or as safe. “She’s not here,” she answered. “We can see that,” the final companion, named Rico, chimed in. Anessa scowled at him. “So where is she?” Dagger asked. “Look,” she said. “I’m doing the best I can. This is where she was last seen, so this is where we start.” Emboldened by the other two at his back, Craig took a step closer to her. “Did you really get a taste of her, or were you just lying to save your scrawny neck?” “I tasted her blood! Okay?” Dagger said, “Then you should be able to track her, identify her location anywhere within a hundred mile radius. What’s the problem?” “The problem is I only got a few drops. The other vampire had killed Gregory and Neal. I didn’t have a lot of time before I would have suffered the same fate.” Rico scoffed at the news. “So now you’ve sentenced us all to die. Do you realize that? If we fail to find her, Marsalis will slay us. Repeatedly.” That thought sent a shudder through her system. She’d seen before the cruel fate of a vamp who’d crossed Marsalis and how the poor creature was whipped until its heart stopped only to be force‐fed vampire blood and revived for more torture.
84
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle She stared at the trio, all three angry faces, and held up both hands. “Look. I got enough to know that she’s not here. I mean, she’s not in this city. We just have to use our heads and think. Where would she go? She’s not from Baton Rouge, but she couldn’t have gotten too far. If I can get within twenty‐five, maybe even fifty miles of her, I should be able to pinpoint her location.” “That’s if we head in the right direction from here.” Dagger pulled out one of his blades and thumbed the edge. “New Orleans,” she said, making an educated guess. It was a large city, wasn’t that far away, and it was where she’d go to get lost. Besides, she recalled Gregory mentioning his suspicions that the online slayer was from there, and he’d been good enough to find her before to set up last night’s ambush. “There’ve been other vampire slayings there—some as recent as last month. It makes sense that she would go there next. Return to someplace more familiar.” Dagger sheathed his knife. “Let’s go then. I want out of this fucking sunlight.” * * * * * Cheyenne barged in the moment Val opened the door. “Whoa, Anne. Are you all right? What’s wrong?” The apron around Val’s waist and a smudge of flour on her cheek told Cheyenne she’d caught her sister‐in‐law in the middle of making dinner. “No. I mean, yes, I’m fine, but, no, things aren’t all right. Listen, Val. I screwed up.” She dropped to the floor in the living room and started pulling her laptop out of its bag along with the necessary power cord. “I didn’t realize it, but I did, and now I have to fix it. It’s a long story, but…” “Mom? Oh, hi, Aunt Cheyenne,” said the oldest of her nephews from the doorway to the kitchen. Damn, they were growing up so fast. How old was he now? Twelve, no, thirteen. A teenager already. And his little brother was…eight, or would be in another month. Val turned toward the doorway and motioned her son back into the other room. “Honey, go check the pie in the oven. Pull it out if it’s ready
85
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle and stir the macaroni, will you? Your aunt and I have some things to discuss, but I’ll be in there in just a minute.” His expression turned curious, but he shrugged. “Okay.” When he disappeared, Val faced her once more. “All right. Slow down. Start over. What do you mean fix it? Fix what?” “The blog. I accidentally uploaded a video that could be used to identify me, which means I’ve put you and the boys in danger. I’m so sorry. Is the wireless router up?” While she spoke she powered up her laptop. Val knelt beside her and put a hand over one of hers. “Stop.” “I can’t. I have to get that video off the site before someone recognizes me. I mean someone already has, at least a couple someones, but maybe—” “Anne, please. Calm down and start at the beginning. What does a video online have to do with me and my sons?” Cheyenne scooted around to face Val who joined her on the floor, sitting cross legged. Taking a deep breath, she launched into the story of what she’d learned, what had happened to her over the past twenty‐four hours—minus the part about having sex with Kieran. “And you believe this vampire?” Val seemed skeptical, and really, who could blame her? She hadn’t met Kieran. She’d never met any vampire, so she only knew what Cheyenne and Mark had told her. “I know this sounds crazy, but you all thought the same when I swore that vamps existed in the first place. Remember?” “Do you believe him?” “Yes, I do.” “Then why did you leave him at the church?” “I…” She hadn’t taken much time to think about that when it happened. Her only focus had been to get here to warn Valerie and the boys. No, that wasn’t true. It had been one goal, but not the only one. The other had been to put some space between her and Kieran. When her heart skipped a beat at the idea of staying at his place, she knew she had to slow things down. Stop, get away, and think things through. He was several centuries older than her and a vampire to boot.
86
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Even if he was one of the good guys, how could she be so damn excited at the idea of staying at his place? It was bad enough she’d screwed him in a cemetery; she shouldn’t want to sleep with him in a coffin! “Anne?” “He wanted to send some stranger from the Order to explain things to you, take you someplace safe. I wanted to do that, to see for myself that you were okay, and I didn’t feel like wasting time arguing about it.” She opened a browser and navigated to her blog to log in. “While I get this video pulled, why don’t you get the kids packed up, and I can take you to the airport. I’ll buy you all tickets to visit your parents in Florida.” Val laughed. “Anne, I can’t just up and leave. I have a job to think about. The kids are in school. Joey’s not even here; I let him spend the night with a friend. Besides, my parents wouldn’t appreciate me just showing up on their doorstep.” Joey, her youngest nephew, should be safe at his friend’s house. If she didn’t know his location, then no one from the Horde could figure it out either. But staying here in her brother’s house was out of the question. “Then I’ll put you and Jacob up in a hotel tonight and pick up Joey in the morning. You can stay there—someplace safe—at least until I can be sure the danger has passed. Okay?” “I don’t know…” She grabbed Val’s hand. “I need to do this. Mark would expect me to do whatever I could to make sure that you and the boys are safe.” “Okay, but only if you come with us.” “I will. I’ll take you there myself.” “No, I mean you come with us and you stay. No more solo, suicidal, vigilante hunts.” Cheyenne frowned. “But how am I to find out—” “I’m sure you can contact that priest, Father What’s‐his‐name, you mentioned. He can let Kieran know where you are and notify you of when the danger has passed.” “All right, but hurry.” Val got up and called to Jacob. Cheyenne went back to work on the
87
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Web site. A while later, as the sun set, Cheyenne grew nervous about the idea of traveling to the hotel so close to nightfall. It might be better if they hunkered down for the night and sought out a hotel in the bright light of day. “Ready to go,” Val said as she set the last bag down at the bottom of the stairs. Cheyenne went to retrieve her laptop case when the doorbell rang. She spun around and said, “Wait,” but it was too late. Val turned the knob…and screamed.

Chapter Twelve Kieran parked his motorcycle behind Cheyenne’s van in the driveway of the two‐story house in one of the city’s better suburban neighborhoods. Then he removed his brand new helmet, which he’d been forced to purchase to avoid potential delays from traffic cops. Tristan pulled to the curb in his ABT Audi R8, a sports car worth six figures that stuck out in this neighborhood like a sober person on Bourbon Street in the middle of Mardi Gras, even at dusk with only the street lamps to spotlight the area. Kieran didn’t wait for the man to get out and approach him. He got off the bike and headed for the door. He had a lot to discuss with his wayward charge, not to mention another spanking to deliver for the inconvenience of leaving him stranded at the church. It had taken too many wasted minutes for him to retrieve his bike—time that would’ve been better spent debriefing the other vamps on Marsalis. Tristan caught up with him before he reached the front porch and pressed a button on the wireless headset to his cell phone, which he wore on his left ear. It was the only thing the man wore that wasn’t made of black leather or silk. “The others are on their way,” he said. “About five minutes out.” “Have you ever heard of keeping a low profile?” Kieran asked. “Why the fuck would I want to do that?” “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because you’re a vampire?” He slapped Kieran on the shoulder. “I finished hiding in the
89
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle shadows in the sixteenth century.” Tristan leaped onto the porch, which was illuminated by a single wall sconce and light through the front windows. He froze the same moment Kieran noticed the door slightly ajar. Both men closed their eyes and took deep breaths. Kieran was the first to speak. “She’s not here, but she hasn’t been gone long. The connection is strong.” Shit! “I smell vampires,” Tristan said. He was right. Kieran picked up the scent of at least one he recognized and two, maybe three, more that were unfamiliar. Worse, he smelled the fear that the humans in the house had experienced when the safety of their home was breached. Tristan pushed the door open farther. No blood, thank God. Luggage lay scattered just inside the door. A lamp had been knocked off a table. The pictures on the wall above it hung askew. But there was no sight of blood stains or the scent of fresh, spilled blood. “What now?” Tristan asked. Kieran stepped back outside and murmured, “Cheyenne.” He opened his senses, reaching out for her unique signal. The scent of her blood, the beat of her heart. The link that bound her to him forever because he’d once, no three times, tasted her life force. It had been strong enough to lead him here. It must remain strong now. He had to find her…and soon. Her life depended on it. His eyelids popped open, and he pointed. “That way.” “You track,” Tristan said. “I’ll drive.” Without hesitation, they raced to his car. * * * * * Cheyenne was going to puke. The terror was so palpable, but she had to hold it together, stay strong for Val and Jacob and somehow ensure their survival. There was no way she could shelter her nephew now from
90
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle the existence of vampires, not since a quartet of the fiends swarmed into Val’s home. It has been a miracle that they hadn’t killed them right then, but they weren’t there for blood. They’d come for her; that had been obvious. And like before, the female vamp stepped in to remind the others that Marsalis wanted her brought to him alive. Why? She had no idea. That protection, however, hadn’t extended to her family, at least not until she vowed to die rather than go with them if they harmed Val or Jacob. She was still surprised she’d convinced them to keep her sister‐in‐ law and nephew alive, although she feared it would prove to be a brief reprieve. Fortunately, one of the vamps whom the others called Rico decided it might make for a boon if they brought Marsalis even more than what he wanted. They’d let their leader decide the humans’ fates. So, now she walked disarmed behind her sister‐in‐law, who hugged her son close to her side as the vampires escorted them up to what appeared to be an abandoned plantation home overcome by the brutal passage of time in the bayou. Flickering lights from inside offered the only evidence that life still existed inside the old mansion. Undead life. The sun had set, which made the trek that much more frightening. The soggy ground squished beneath each footstep. Rustling sounds of unseen animals caused her to flinch more than once. The boards creaked as they made their way up to the expansive, albeit dilapidated, porch. Val and Jacob hesitated even after a vamp opened the front door. The vampiress shoved her sister‐in‐law. “Get moving.” Cheyenne entered, quickly catching up with Val who clung to her son even more now. Though she whispered words of encouragement, she pressed his face toward her body to shield him from the sight of half a dozen vampires lounging around the space. They didn’t look like your Hollywood gang of gothic vamps all dressed in black, but rather a colorful mix of actors prepped for performances in various plays, some historical, some modern. Only their exposed fangs and hungry stares identified them as undead members of the Horde.
91
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Cheyenne moved in to try to put herself between her family and the danger, but an angry, knife‐wielding vampire grabbed her arm and yanked her toward a set of French doors. He was the same damn vamp who’d stolen the only blade she’d been wearing when they barged into Val’s home. Two other vamps from the original quartet shoved open the French doors to a room filled with at least twenty more vampires. A couple were naked and chained like rabid animals to the wall. Cheyenne got her first glimpse of the legendary Marsalis. He sat at the opposite end of the vast room, which was illuminated by two grand chandeliers of candles and a wall of large windows that let in fractured moonlight. He was well‐groomed in very elegant but outdated clothing. A coiled whip hung at his hip in odd contrast to the delicate lace that peeked at her from his cuffed sleeves. His face was clean‐shaved, smooth, and emotionless. His dark hair hung past broad shoulders and was pulled back into a ponytail tied off with a thin black ribbon. At first glance, he looked to be no older than his early twenties, but she knew better. His eyes told a different story. They were deep set, cold, and calculating. The vampiric knife‐lover all but dragged her before him and forced her to the floor when he dropped to one knee. Damn, his grip hurt. “The human slayer, Sire,” he announced. “As promised,” the vampiress added from behind her. “So I see. Well done, Dagger.” When Marsalis’ gaze moved from Cheyenne and Dagger toward her family, a blizzard of dread blew through her nervous system. “What else do we have here, Anessa?” he asked in heavily accented English. Before the vampiress could answer, Cheyenne snatched an unguarded knife from a holder at her captor’s side. With a swipe of the blade and surprise on her side, she sliced a gaping wound in the vampire called Dagger, gained her release, and took a defensive stance. “Let them go,” Cheyenne said. “They’re not part of this.” Marsalis never even flinched. He held up a hand, which probably saved her life, since those around them held off their attack.
92
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle She knew she was way outnumbered, but at least she was armed and could go down fighting. She might get lucky and kill a few. Her gaze fixed on Marsalis. If they all had to die, she’d do what she could to at least take him to hell with her. “You do not fear death as most humans do,” he said in a tone so calm, she wondered whether his heart even beat inside that damn chest of his. “What’s to fear? You’re dead,” she said. “You seem to be doing all right.” He laughed, which seemed to surprise the vampires around them. She caught more than a couple exchanging stunned glances. Cheyenne wanted to look at Val and Jacob, check on them to see if they were okay. Their soft whimpers were her only clue to their location. But she didn’t dare turn her gaze from the ancient vampire. Marsalis took a step to one side, and she adjusted her stance to keep him in view. “I like you,” he said, taking another step, and another. “You’re witty.” She turned as he circled her and kept her blade at the ready. “So glad to have amused you.” On her periphery, she spotted Val and Jacob standing together a few feet away and surrounded by three vampires. Marsalis flashed a full‐fanged grin, but the show of good humor did little to soften the predatory threat in his eyes. “Oh, you have. I can see now why Kieran rescued you. He’s always had a soft spot in that heart of his for fair‐haired beauties, such as yourself. Although yours is a shade darker than hers if I recall. It has been a few years since I last saw her.” “Julia’s alive?” she asked before she could stop herself. He raised an eyebrow and stopped to face her. “So, he told you about her, did he?” When she refused to answer, he continued. “Interesting. You must be more important to him than I thought. Oh, and, no, she’s not. Death was the price she paid for turning Kieran into one of us without permission.” Sadness weighed on her heart with the knowledge that, like her, Kieran had lost someone so dear. But she couldn’t dwell on the past, not if she wanted to have any hope for a future. She’d yet to locate a way out, a
93
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle way to save her family, but she kept talking to gain more time. “I’m not important to him. I only just met him yesterday.” His eyes narrowed. “Is that so? Tell me, do you sing, perhaps?” She had to convince him somehow. He would not use her to get to Kieran. She wouldn’t allow it, so she kept a straight face and conjured up a vision of how angry she’d been with Kieran at first. “No.” “Pity.” He continued to circle her, his gaze toward the floor, one hand raised to tap a finger on his chin. His display of mild curiosity and distracted thought did not convince her that now was a good time to attack. The man…the monster wasn’t an idiot, and neither was she. “Could you explain to me how it is you came to meet Kieran without either of you killing one another?” He glanced at her and stopped. “You are a vampire slayer after all, and he’s a vamp.” “He contacted me before sunset. I didn’t know he was a vampire at first.” Keep talking. Search for a chink in the armor, a way out… “I see.” She frowned on purpose. “He told me some stupid story about a group of humans and vamps with way too much time on their hands. Called it the Order or something like that. Said they were the good guys, as if I’d just accept his word for that. He thought he could convince me that not all vamps were bad by saving my ass in the cemetery.” “And did he?” “Oh, he saved me from your cronies…” She sneered. “But, like you said, he’s a vampire, too, and one of your kind killed my husband. My daughter. You’re all monsters in my book.” “I see.” Marsalis’ smile turned ominous. “If you aren’t a part of the Order, you’re of little use to me other than as a carrot for Kieran. I’d thought you’d be more difficult to break, had looked forward to a little sadistic entertainment for my guests.” Those same undead guests chuckled at his comment. Chains clanked and rattled when the two affixed to the wall jumped with apparent excitement. “But you’ve told me all I need to know.”
94
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Did I? And what if I lied?” His smile vanished. He released his whip, the tail slithering to the floor. A rumble of excitement swept over the vampires. A bolt of fear struck her in the gut. The two ravenous creatures bound to the wall leaped and yanked at their chains. She tightened her grip on the only weapon she had. Marsalis said, “We shall see. And you best hope that you lied about Kieran and how much you mean to him, because if he doesn’t show up tonight, you’ll be dead by sunrise.” The strike was so quick she had no time to react. The whip’s end wrapped around her wrist, and a jerk sent her sliding across the floor and the blade sailing from her grasp. Val screamed. Jacob shouted. The windows shattered. Cheyenne ducked her head and shut her eyes against the rainfall of fractured glass. A war erupted around her. Chaos ensued. Before she could climb to her knees or even raise her head to see what was going on, the whip cracked again but, although she braced herself to receive the blow, the burning sting of its bite never came. She hollered for Val, but got no answer, or couldn’t hear one over the cacophony of conflict. Then she saw Kieran, not two feet from her, the tail of the whip wrapped around his forearm. A thin line of blood trickled from his arm. He’d come between her and that whip, she realized, but she had no time to dwell on it. Scampering for cover amid the debris and ash clouds, she searched for Val, for Jacob, for a weapon of her own. A hand closed over her shoulder, and she spun to slug the threat. The stranger caught her fist and said, “Whoa, I’m one of the good guys. Hold—” He shoved her behind him with one hand and swung a sword with the other to decapitate a vamp who attacked. The vamp disintegrated into a fiery ball of cinders and ashes. “Name’s Tristan. Kieran’s a little busy at the moment. I’m here to get you and your family out.” “Save them. I’m not leaving.” She darted toward the wall where
95
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle she spotted her lost knife. “Fuck,” her new companion cursed before swinging at another attacker. “Get back here!” She dropped to her knees, the shards of glass making tiny cuts in her palms and knees as she scrambled to grab the knife. “Val! Jacob!” She had to find them. Armed again, she climbed to her feet and searched the room. When her gaze returned to where Kieran had been, she found him engaged in the most dangerous of standoffs with an opponent who didn’t fight fair. * * * * * Kieran ignored the individual battles that began the moment he and the others from the Order crashed through the windows. He’d no way of knowing how many vampires were inside, whether he’d brought a team large enough to succeed. All he knew or cared about was that Marsalis was inside and he had Cheyenne. He paid no attention to the minor wound in his arm and kept his eyes focused on the bastard who’d dared to take her. As a human, he’d been unable to save Julia from Marsalis’ clutches, but he’d be damned if he’d permit Cheyenne to feel the sting of Marsalis’ lash. Or suffer the same fate as Julia. Marsalis snarled and yanked on the whip, but Kieran would not release the other end. A rogue vampire stumbled backwards toward him. Kieran kicked out. His boot caught the vamp in the ass and sent him flailing into the grip of one from the Order. Kieran never took his eyes off Marsalis. “It’s over,” he told him. “Your time has come.” Marsalis gave a slow shake of his head. “You always were a dreamer, Kieran. Julia told me all about your plans, how you proposed, and vowed to take care of her.” His mouth curled with a show of disgust. “How you expected the two of you would grow old and die together.” Separated by the length of the whip, each man refusing to give up

You did.” “She disobeyed me! I couldn’t allow her to live. Her lust for you cost her her life.” “What life? An eternity spent as a vampire enslaved to you?” Marsalis moved a few more steps to his left. “I created her!” “No. You destroyed her. You took her life, made her into a vampire, and then killed her when you discovered you could no longer control her—no longer expect her adoration.” Kieran wound another segment of the whip around his fist. “I won’t allow you to do the same to Cheyenne.” “You won’t be here to stop me.” Marsalis’ grin was pure evil. “Dagger, now!” “No!” Cheyenne’s shout came from behind him. He whirled in time to see her stop, a knife drop from her lax hand, and her eyes go wide. “No…” “Kieran…” Her legs gave way. “I—” A cough made blood spill from her lips. She collapsed, the blade meant for him still lodged in her back.

Chapter Thirteen Marsalis attacked, but Kieran went into a rage. Before the coven leader could take advantage of the distraction, Kieran turned, dropped, and avoided the fatal blow. Marsalis spun for a counter strike only to collide with Kieran’s fist. A direct and brutal hit to the chest. Flesh tore. Bones crunched. And Kieran squeezed the pulsating heart. A shocked look crossed Marsalis’ face. “Die, you son of a bitch.” With a furious yank, he ripped the bastard’s heart out. Marsalis screamed and clawed at the gaping wound. His heart and body succumbed to the orange, fiery glow, and he crumbled into gray ashes. The only evidence left of his existence remained the whip on the floor. The war that had once raged throughout the room ceased in that instance with the last stragglers of the coven sent fleeing or to their deaths. Kieran couldn’t care less, although he did scan the room for the asshole who threw the knife only to find Tristan wiping off his sword. He looked up and gave him a curt nod. Kieran collapsed next to Cheyenne and, gritting his teeth, pulled the blade from her back. He then moved to turn her over, but was stopped by two humans, a female and a youth. “Anne! Oh my, God. No!” The bloodied woman who dropped to 98
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle the floor beside them must be the sister‐in‐law. The boy, her son, stood a few feet behind her, staring and crying. His tears joined the blood smears on his face and clothes. Wounded but alive. Val was crying, too, and Kieran’s heart ached. They didn’t acknowledge him at all, which made him feel as if he were an unwanted outsider intruding on the family’s private, tragic moment. He couldn’t leave, though. He wouldn’t leave her side, not until… When Val rolled her over, Cheyenne groaned. Kieran’s gaze shot to her face. Then he listened, actually concentrated, and heard the faint tap of her heart. “Anne? You’re alive!” Val cradled her head in her lap. “Someone. Please, call 911!” The pain of his failure overwhelmed Kieran. The humans couldn’t hear what he could—the internal bleeding, the struggle of the heart to keep going, the slow, erratic beat. “What?” Val asked, bending forward to listen. Then, she looked up and straight at him. “Are you Kieran?” “Yes.” “She wants to speak with you.” He scooted forward, met her teary gaze, and heard the death rattle in her labored breaths. Very gently, he took her from Val and lifted her onto his lap, trying to cause her as little discomfort or pain as possible. He cradled her head and clutched one of her hands in his. “I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice weak. Fuck! He wanted to rage at the heavens for letting this happen. The knife was meant for him, not her! “No. No. Don’t,” he said. “You… Damn it! I failed you. You didn’t do anything wrong.” “K‐kiss me,” she whispered. He blinked. She couldn’t mean— He shook his head but heard her words again. “Kiss me…before…I die.” She knew, he realized. It was only a matter of time. Not long.
99
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He stared into her eyes, and the words he’d been too afraid to say burst from his mouth. “I love you.” Her lips lifted in a small smile. She opened her mouth. “I—” She coughed and clamped her eyes shut against the obvious pain. A tear fell from one of his eyes as he bent to bestow her dying request. He pressed a tender kiss to her bloodied lips. Her heartbeat skipped, slowed. He heard it, and his heart broke. She opened her lips to him, and he swept his tongue inside only to taste her blood, which had filled her mouth. More tears welled in his eyes. Then she bit him. He flinched and jerked back. She’d drawn blood. His blood. He tasted it and stared at her. Her bold gaze met his. No indecision whatsoever. And he knew what he had to do, what she wanted him to do. Before it was too late, he pulled her body closer to his, let his fangs lengthen and bit his tongue, allowing the blood to fill his mouth. Then he kissed her again. He swiped his tongue past her lips to duel with hers as she sucked on his tongue and drank his blood. With each pull of her mouth, each drop of his blood that she drank, her heartbeat thudded until her pulse matched his—strong and steady. Her arms came up to wrap around him, cling to him, even as he held her tight in a lover’s embrace. He kept the kiss going to give her as much of his life force as he could allow. A loud clearing of a throat and a big hand falling on his shoulder yanked Kieran from the feeding. He lifted his head to see Tristan beside them with Marsalis’ whip coiled in his fist. Kieran looked back at Cheyenne. Her eyes were closed. Her lips slightly parted. “Is she…?” Val asked, apparently unable to complete the question. Kieran didn’t know whether she asked if Cheyenne was dead or a vampire. Either way the answer was a yes. He didn’t answer, though. Instead, he looked at Tristan. “Get ‘em out of here. Now.”
100
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Wait. No!” Val argued, but Tristan and a few others forced the sister‐in‐law and nephew from the room. Kieran knew Tristan would ensure they made it home safely. But… “Stay with them,” he shouted. At least until…later. Kieran watched the last warriors of the Order leave. Some would stand guard out of sight in case members of the coven chose to return. They all knew he was in no condition to fight at the moment, much less move. Not with Cheyenne still in his lap. She stirred, groaned. He watched her face. Her eyes remained closed. Her lips turned down into a frown, and her brow furrowed. So it began. The turning. He embraced her as the first spasms wracked her body. He held on and whispered, “I love you,” while she bucked and moaned and screamed from the excruciating pain of…death’s kiss. * * * * * When she and Kieran arrived at Val’s house early in the morning, the scene was not what she expected. Val’s curses could be heard even before the front door opened and the moment it did, it revealed a very handsome, tall, and frustrated vampire who was at his wits end. “Having problems, Tristan?” Kieran asked. “Fuck you.” Tristan’s response made both of them laugh. “You owe me big time for this, Kieran.” Cheyenne walked into the living room to find Val tied to a chair. Jacob sat nearby on a couch, warily eyeing Tristan, but when he saw her, he jumped up, ran to her, and clamped his arms around her in a hug that made her realize he was stronger than his youth led her to believe. She hugged him close and slowly made her way across the room to Val’s aid. “What is with you men and your penchant for tying up women?” She peeled her nephew off and began loosening the binds around Val’s wrists. Kieran gave her a wink but didn’t say a thing. Tristan answered somewhat defensively, “I caught her and the boy

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle trying to sneak out to go find you. Twice! Aside from harming them, this was the only way to make them stay put.” “He threatened to bite my mom!” Jacob shouted. “He didn’t mean it,” Cheyenne said. She turned to Tristan, who did look rather dangerous in all black with that confiscated whip coiled at his hip. “Did you?” He rolled his eyes. “I only said it to keep the boy here.” He looked from Kieran to Cheyenne. “What? It worked, didn’t it? I let them clean up, change clothes, and I also bandaged their wounds, so I’m not a heartless fiend. They’re alive, they’re safe, and now they’re all yours!” He headed toward the door, but Kieran stopped him. “Thank you, my friend.” Tristan’s gaze fell to Kieran’s outstretched hand then lifted once more. They shook hands. “Any time.” The moment Cheyenne finished letting Val go, Jacob gave his mother a hug. Cheyenne stepped back and felt the comfort of Kieran’s arm drape over her shoulders. Val eyed them with a storm of emotions and a hint of wariness evident on her face. She held her son tight until he began to squirm. “Are you…?” Worried at how Val would react, Cheyenne nodded. “I am.” Would she kick her out? Refuse to have any more contact with her? Val’s gaze shifted to Kieran. “You better have meant what you said to her last night, because I swear, if you break her heart, I’ll find some way to put a stake through yours.” “I’ll take good care of her,” he said. His fingers squeezed her shoulder. “You have my word.” Tears welled. Cheyenne smiled and ran to hug her sister‐in‐law. When she pulled back, Val asked, “What now?” at the same time Cheyenne said, “Are you both okay?” The women chuckled, and Val turned into a gracious host by motioning toward the sofa. “Please, have a seat so we can talk.” Kieran first moved to the windows to close the drapes, earning an

Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle understanding nod from Val. Then he took a seat next to Cheyenne and put one arm around her, holding her to his side and one of her hands in his lap. Cheyenne looked at Jacob. He hadn’t stopped staring at Kieran since Tristan left and he squirmed out of his mother’s embrace. “Jacob, are you all right? Is there anything you want to talk about—what happened last night maybe?” She worried that the teen would be scarred for life after all of the terrifying things he’d witnessed and lived through. He continued to look at Kieran. “Before he died, Dad told me about vampires, how he had to go out at night to make it safe for me, Mom, and Joey. He told me that murder is wrong, like what happened to my uncle and cousin, but that it’s okay to fight when you’re protecting your family.” Cheyenne nodded. “Your dad was right. He was a very good, very brave man.” He didn’t look away from Kieran. “Are you going to protect us now?” Kieran’s hand tightened on hers, and she knew the question packed an emotional punch. No other welcome of him into their family could’ve been clearer, more right than that question. Her eyes burned, and she blinked several times to hold back the tears. “Just until I’m big and strong enough to do it?” the boy added. “I’d be honored,” Kieran said. “Good.” Jacob smiled. So did Cheyenne. “Cause I want you to teach me how to fight like you do!” He threw a punch with his fist. “Jacob!” Val said. “There are more important things for you to learn like math and history and English…and‐and‐and science.” “Oh, Mom…” Kieran chuckled. “No. You’re mother’s right. To be a good fighter, you first have to be smart up here.” He released her hand and tapped his temple. “The rest you can learn in time…” He paused, but added in response to Val’s frown, “When you’re old enough to handle it, that is.” “I’ve decided we’re not going to discuss what happened with Joey,” Val said.
103
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Joey’s just a little kid,” Jacob added with all the maturity of a thirteen‐year‐old. “He don’t need to know such things, ‘cause he still believes in the tooth fairy and monsters under the bed.” “Be that as it may, I’d prefer both my boys have as normal a childhood as possible from here on out, especially after what happened last night.” She looked at her son. “And this knowledge of vampires is not to go beyond this house, young man. No begging them to come for show and tell.” Jacob frowned but nodded. “I am sorry,” Kieran said, “that you both had to suffer through that last night.” “Oh, it was terrifying, but over, thank God. We’ll survive…” Cheyenne struggled to listen as Val explained what had happened to her and Jacob last night, how they’d both been bitten but rescued when their attackers were killed. Kieran assured them that no ill‐effects would occur from having been bitten. No, they wouldn’t become vampires or zombies, or any other monster Jacob could envision in his creative mind. The thirst, which had been a dull but insistent ache, gnawed at Cheyenne the longer she remained around her family—her human family. Although the idea of drinking blood from anyone’s neck still gave her the creeps, she already knew the urge would soon become too strong to deny. Kieran had warned her that it was intense for those newly turned. Except for the blood he’d given her at turning and the few swallows he’d provided upon waking from her ordeal, she hadn’t fed. When she caught herself staring at her sister‐in‐law’s neck, she turned a worried gaze toward Kieran and grabbed his hand. His reaction was immediate. He stood, made their excuses, and promised to return later that evening. “You don’t mind if I leave my bike here, do you? We’ll be taking Cheyenne’s van for now.” “No, not at all.” “It’s a cool bike!” Jacob added, giving up on his attempt at maturity. “Will you take me riding on it sometime?”
104
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Sure, just not today, okay?” Kieran guided Cheyenne toward the front door. She vaguely noticed that the luggage was put away and the place had been cleaned up already, but she didn’t remark on it. Instead, she stepped out onto the porch and shied away from Val’s attempt to hug her goodbye. Val frowned but then gave her a tight smile and quick nod. She looked at Kieran. “Take care of her.” “I will.” A car door slammed, and Joey darted across the driveway. “Hey, Mom! Hi, Aunt Cheyenne. Who are you?” The car pulled away, the driver giving them a friendly wave. “Joey, this is a friend of your aunt’s, but they were just leaving.” “Aww, but I just got here.” The scent of fresh human blood and the sound of young heartbeats were too much for Cheyenne. As Joey hugged his aunt, she twisted and clung to Kieran.

Chapter Fourteen Val pulled Joey away with an apologetic look. Kieran lifted Cheyenne into his arms, turning her face toward his shoulder. “We really have to go. She’s not feeling too well, but we’ll see you tonight.” They quickly made their way into the van, and Kieran ordered her into the back while he took her keys and got in the driver’s seat. “Get under the covers,” he said as he cranked the engine then pulled out of the driveway. “But first, dig my sunglasses out of my jacket.” She tossed them to him and dove under the sheet. He put them on, thankful for the dark tint’s added protection. “I told you this might happen,” he said, earning a grunt from the lump under the covers. He’d fed just before sunup—thanks to the vamp from the Order who’d made a stop along the way as he drove them to Val’s house. Kieran figured a little replenishment would do him good after giving so much to Cheyenne. She should’ve fed then, too, but at the time, she was still too weak and queasy from the turning. He’d known the hunger would intensify, though, especially if she didn’t sleep, and it did. “You should’ve let me take you to my place first.” The first twenty four hours after a turning was the most potent time for a vampire, and he’d wanted her to go through it in a safe environment. The thirst for blood would become great, but so would her other senses once they began
106
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle to heighten to vampiric levels. Judging by Cheyenne’s current condition, the final phase of her transition had begun. “I had to make sure they were okay. Besides, I’m not…” Her words drifted off into a mumbled sound he couldn’t understand. He risked a ticket by speeding once he turned out of the neighborhood and onto a straight stretch of highway. “What was that?” “I’m not ready to go to your place.” That surprised him. “Why?” When she didn’t respond, he repeated the question. “Look, I just don’t think I can sleep in a coffin. Okay? ” A coffin? She would experience a lot of new things as a vampire, but sleeping in a coffin wasn’t one of them. “I know I’m a vampire, and it’s expected of me. I know I’m supposed to bite people’s necks.” She didn’t sound too thrilled by the idea. “Don’t be mad, please. It’s not like I don’t have time to learn. It’s just that I’ve been human for a lot longer than I’ve been a vampire. This is all new to me.” He tossed a glance over his shoulder, realized she was serious, and decided to tease her a bit. “I’m not mad. I understand, but you should know coffins are so comfortable with all that padding and soft materials. You don’t have to sleep in a used one. You might like that new‐coffin smell.” He took a deep breath and sighed loudly. She whimpered. He grinned but didn’t look back. “And when the lid’s down, it’s so quiet and peaceful.” “I’m claustrophobic!” He bit his lip to keep from laughing. He shouldn’t tease her so, but she was so damn adorable when riled up over something, he couldn’t resist. When he thought he could keep his humor out of his voice, he said, “A claustrophobic vampire. That is a problem, but don’t worry, my dear. You’re not alone. When it’s time to sleep, we’ll get through the day together.” She moaned and wiggled around on the mattress under the covers.
107
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “I’m so thirsty.” His good humor fled. “I know, chére. Hang in there. It’s not much farther.” He navigated the traffic as fast as possible and briefly considered stopping by the morgue since it was closer. An IV of her own blood type would curb her hunger, but he scratched the idea when he checked the time and realized that his contact there had gotten off the graveyard shift already. Besides, his fledging needed to overcome her hang‐ups and learn to feed properly—fang to flesh. No vampire could survive on recycled blood from a bag forever. He knew she wasn’t looking forward to her first real feeding, was squeamish at the idea of approaching strangers to bite them on the neck, which is why he’d been toying with an alternative possibility. It would just require he drink enough for both of them. A short time later, he pulled up to the gate of his home, rolled down the window, and pressed the security code on the pad. The wrought iron gate slid open. He didn’t waste time parking in the three‐car garage, in the spot usually reserved for his bike, but instead pulled to a stop in the circular drive, shadowed by his massive two‐story home. When he cut the engine, Cheyenne peeked from under the sheet. “Are we there?” “Yes. Come on.” He helped her from the van and watched her eyes widen at the sight of his home. “Where are we?” “Home sweet home.” With a firm grip on her hand, he walked her to the front door. It opened just as he topped the last step and removed his shades. “Welcome home, Mister Duboix,” his butler said with a formal bow. “Mister…?” Cheyenne stared at him. “Duboix is my surname.” Kieran grinned and handed the sunglasses to his butler. “Reginald, this is Cheyenne Logan, the love of my life.” He chuckled when his butler showed a flash of surprise before suppressing it, his mild‐mannered expression restored. It was rare that he
108
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle was ever able to fluster the man. “A pleasure to meet you, ma’am.” Kieran headed for the stairs with Cheyenne in tow, but swept her into his arms before he ascended. “No disturbances, Reginald. We’ve had a long night and need the rest.” “As you wish, sir,” he heard Reginald say before the butler closed the door. Cheyenne nuzzled his neck and licked him. He groaned and took the stairs two at a time. “Not yet,” he warned. “I didn’t know you had a butler,” she murmured against his skin. “There are a lot of things you’ve yet to learn about me, my dear. A lot I don’t know about you, but we have an eternity to discover them.” “Mmm. He’s human,” she said. Her voice took on a more sultry tone. “Yes, he is, and he knows what I am. I hired him through the Order, so his neck is off limits.” “I don’t want his neck.” Her nose rubbed him just under his ear. “Good.” He gritted his teeth, and his fangs came out. He walked into the master bedroom, an elaborate room filled with furniture he never used. He headed to a large gilded mirror, stopped, and set Cheyenne on her feet. She gave him a disappointed moan until she looked around. “Wow! This room is gorgeous.” She started toward the bed, but he grabbed her hand and ran the fingers of his other hand along the edge of the mirror’s frame until he felt what he searched for. He paused to let the hidden scanner read his fingerprints, listened for the beep only vampires and dogs could hear, and then said, “Un jour est perdu si on nʹa pas aimait.” “What’s that mean?” she asked, but before he could answer, the mirror‐fronted panel opened. “It’s the code to get in here,” he said. “Okay…” She followed him through the passageway. “Yes, I get that, but what is it in English?” He stopped and looked at her. “A day is lost if one has not loved.” “Oh.”
109
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle He swept his arm out to direct her attention to his lair. “My coffin, chére.” It was a windowless room a bit larger than the master suite they’d come through. The walls were made of mahogany panels over a solid skeleton of steel and concrete. The floor was covered by plush carpeting. Soundproof and secured with the best that his wealth could buy, it was a far cry from the damp and dirty tombs he’d once called home several centuries before. “A bed,” she said, staring at the king‐sized, four‐poster in the center of the space. Her eyes narrowed as she turned to face him. “You tricked me!” He chuckled. “No, everything I said was the truth.” He backed toward the bathroom with its modern, glass‐and‐tile shower stall. “Coffins are cushiony and quiet when the lids are closed.” “You didn’t tell me I wouldn’t have to sleep in one.” She stalked him around the bed and into the bathroom. “I never said you had to sleep in one, if you’ll recall.” He didn’t bother telling her now that only those gone rogue or those who hadn’t yet amassed a bank account big enough to pay for elaborate security measures chose such cheaper alternatives. She eyed him, but there was no anger in her narrowed gaze. He hopped from one foot to another while removing his boots and socks. “You could’ve told me sooner. Do you have any idea how worried and uncomfortable I’ve been at the idea of having to…to do such a thing?” She followed him into the stall without removing a single stitch of clothes or her tennis shoes. “And I’m still thirsty,” she said, backing him against the tile. Her lips parted, her new fangs visible. “I can take care of that for you,” he said in a husky whisper. He hit the button to release the warm spray like a light rain from the ceiling. “Ah!” She closed her eyes, raised her face, and let the water soak her body. Her clothes stuck to her curves, which left little to his imagination. His cock grew impossibly hard inside his drenched denims.
110
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle Her wet lashes fluttered, and her gaze found his. “I’m aroused, too.” He smiled and lifted her healed, unmarred hands to his lips for a gentlemanly kiss. “I can take care of that for you, as well.” He stripped her clothes and shoes from her, which left him no need of his imagination at all. “You did promise to take care of me,” she murmured. “I did. I will.” He straightened after piling her clothing in a corner of the shower stall. She placed her palm over his heart. “I can hear your heartbeat.” She could feel it, too, no doubt, since he thought his heart would leap out of his chest. He held his breath. Despite the barrier of his wet shirt, her touch singed him, electrified his desire. “Colors are more brilliant. Scents…” She looked him in the eye and took a deep breath. “You smell delicious.” “Thanks,” he said, his fingers fumbling with his button‐fly jeans. When she tugged his shirt from the waistband, he yanked it up and over his head, letting it go splat on the floor of the shower. “I can feel each drop of water strike my skin. Everything is so…” With eyes closed, she ran her hands over her face and through her hair. The move lifted her slick breasts. Beads of water, like a cascade of diamonds, slid over them and dripped from the tips. “So exquisite.” Fuck! He was going to die before he could get his cock out of his pants. He yanked them open and shoved them and his underwear as far as mid thigh when she stopped him by dropping to her knees. Her left hand fisted his cock while her other one pushed his pants down enough that he could at least extricate one leg from the soggy mass. She licked the head of his dick. His legs almost gave out on him. He groaned and leaned against the wall. New vamps weren’t the only ones who could be overwhelmed by their heightened senses. She didn’t suck him but instead pressed kisses on both sides from tip to hilt and then licked a vein that ran along the underside of his cock. Kieran couldn’t breathe. He braced himself, stabbed his fingers into her wet hair, and bracketed her head.
111
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle “Cheyenne…” His throat constricted. His heart rate revved, his fangs bared. Her right hand splayed over his thigh. Her left hand closed around his cock once more, but she didn’t move it. She didn’t have to. The moment she sank her teeth into his inner thigh, he came. “Oh, fuck!” The orgasm wouldn’t cease. Every pull of her hot mouth on his flesh shoved him beyond endurance. She sucked harder for more of his blood. Intense shockwaves rocked his body, wreaked havoc on his system. He needed them to stop. He wanted them to last. He pressed her face against him, her mouth tighter against his leg, and bucked his hips. She pumped his cock, forcing more semen to spurt over her shoulder, onto her back only to be washed away by the shower’s spray. Spent, he shut off the water and tugged on her hair. She kept sucking. Pumping. He gritted his teeth and pulled harder until she finally released him, her tongue making one last sweep across the puncture wounds. She let go of his cock, sat back on her heels, and looked up at him. A sated smile on her lips. He struggled to catch his breath enough to speak. “If that’s where you intend to bite your freshies, you’ll be feeding from me and me alone.” Her smile widened to a full‐fanged grin. Then she licked her lips and said, “I wouldn’t have it any other way, my love.” He blinked. His heart skipped. “What’d you call me?” With lithe grace, she climbed to her feet, up onto tiptoes, and draped her arms around his neck. Her happy gaze held his. “I wanted to say it before, in the van when I watched you sleep, in the bayou when you held me in your lap with tears in your eyes, and when you became my sire.” She ran her fingers into his wet hair and gave him a peck on the lips. “I love you, Kieran. You’re an arrogant, impossible, sadistic vampire, my love, and I adore every addictive, seductive inch of you.” He popped her playfully on the ass, which made her jolt. “You could’ve told me sooner,” he said, using the same words
112
Seduction’s Bite by Madison Layle she’d used only moments earlier. “I think I chose the perfect time.” With a growl, he kicked free of his pants, grabbed her butt, and lifted her against him so she could wrap her legs around his waist. He nipped her bottom lip and fondled her ass while he carried her, wet and naked, into the other room where he paused by the bed. “Seductive, huh?” Her lips twitched. She nodded. “And did I mention cocky?” He fell across the bed, his body over hers, and slid his cock into her. “No, I don’t believe you mentioned that.” Her eyelids drifted closed. “My mistake,” she said on a sigh. He chuckled and kissed her lips, her jaw…the pulse point at the base of her neck. He scraped his fangs over her skin but didn’t bite down. “A frustrating tease,” she murmured, lifting her chin to give him better access. “And I love you, too, just the way you are…my sexy, little, stubborn, masochistic vamp.” Her gorgeous green eyes popped open. She pushed at his chest. “Stubborn?” “Uh huh.” He took her by the wrists and forced her arms up over her head. Then he brushed his lips across hers for a brief kiss and ground his hips against her, nudging his cock in deeper. When he pulled back, he smiled at the unveiled passion that darkened her gaze. “Don’t forget I said sexy, too, and…I’ll love you forever.” She grinned and agreed. “Forever.” The End
