Prologue The summer solstice had finally arrived on the heels of a rainy spring, and the ceremony had already begun. The Elementals’ time had come to share their powers with the next generation they would be creating tonight. They gathered together beside a long-abandoned, dilapidated cabin high up in the majestic Rocky Mountains of Alberta. This ceremony happened every thirty years in the evening of the summer solstice. The renewal of love vows between mates started the proceedings, followed by giving thanks to Mother Nature and the powers she had bestowed upon the women from birth. The clear night surged with energy, and lightning burst through the sky. Mother Nature seemed pleased. The time for the final chapter of the ritual had arrived. The four women lay with their backs to the earth while their men knelt between their thighs and dragged a fingertip into the muddy ground. Then one by one, the men traced the corresponding element onto their partner’s stomach, above their fertile womb. The high priestess, from their coven, turned north and strode across the circle to the first couple. May you bless everyone you touch.” She stood up, turned east, and walked to the second couple. She laid her right hand on her stomach over the symbol and said, “I mark you with the powers of the air. May you show love to everyone around you.” She stood up and turned south. Repeating the process again, she said, “I mark you with the powers of fire. May you show care to every living creature.” Turning west to the final couple, she repeated, one last time, the necessary steps and joyfully affirmed, “I mark you with the power of water. May you give hope to the hopeless.” The high priestess stepped back to the middle of the circle. Picking up the clay bowl, she held it over her head and prayed to Mother Nature, “We humbly and lovingly ask for you to bless these unions with girls who will carry on your powers for good.” The earth rumbled beneath their bodies, the wind picked up and blew around their circle, the rain came down in soft droplets, and a lightning bolt burst from the sky straight into the clay bowl. They’d escaped the clutches of these evil madmen on several occasions and decided instead of running from them, they’d sit tight and wait for the hunters to come. They always came. Their parents were both werewolves and had trained the boys from childhood how to protect themselves and each other from the various threats in the world. Sadly, their parents had been captured and killed by the hunters not long after the twins had left home. They remained closer than ever, vowing to look after each other for life. Levi felt the wind pick up behind him, stirring up old rotting vegetation and dead pine needles strewn about the front lawn. He stepped aside into complete calm as the wind picked up behind Skye. He realized how much control she had over the air. Skye’s arms flew forward, pointing straight at the door. It flew open, the wind rushing through the door as a cyclone, throwing furniture and tables around the room and shattering them all to pieces as they bounced off the walls. Levi stood behind Skye, amazed at her powers and ashamed he doubted her abilities. In all the chaos, he managed to spot Simon crouched in a corner outside of the turmoil going on in the living room. Their gazes met, and a knowing grin crossed Simon’s face. He lifted and pointed his gun at Levi, only to have it whipped out of his hand, joining the turbulent air swirling close to him. He stood up and ran, heading for the back entrance. The door burst open and crashed against the wall across the room. Black burn marks marred the door.
