Chapter One

he white light shimmered briefly around Sandray before disappearing altogether. She took a quick look around. Above, the coil that held the energy faded, leaving a black ring. Sandray lowered her aircar to the floor. She was inside a public transit station, disused by the look of it. The layout was identical to the one she’d left, from the huge cavern to the line of windows that ran along one wall. Behind the windows would be the control centre. That was where she had to go. Facing her were two large doors, now open. Outside, the blue sky was partly obscured by massive trees, just like the pictures in the historical records. Like a child who’d never seen anything so wonderful, she raced outside. She ran her hands over the rough bark that covered the trunk of the nearest tree. Looking upwards to the branches, they seemed to press against the outside walls, as if intent on toppling the station over. Sandray breathed in the sweet, unfamiliar scent. A tiny white blossom fell onto her nose. She pocketed it. 1
Gateway After one last look around, she raced back inside. To hell with it if she acted like a teenager. Nearing thirtyfive, she never felt more alive. I’m free at last. Sandray decided she’d never miss another hot stinking sunrise over the desert again. Time to contact her father. She grabbed her bag from the aircar, rummaged through and removed the comm, which was about the size of her palm. She flipped the lid open and the screen glowed white. “Dad. I’m here.” He appeared. White hair flowed past his shoulders. The eccentric professor looked like a religious man, especially in his white robe. The lines of his tanned face became more pronounced when he smiled. “You’ve made it! After we’ve talked, go to the control room and remove the crystal. We have to make sure no one can get here, ever.” “I know what I have to do. Don’t fret. Oh, and speaking of here, where am I?” “The country you are in is called Kagistan.” “I know that from the records. What town?” “Landon. It’s the only place on Kagistan where there’s a transit station.” One station, just like on Reiah. What a relief. Once she got the crystal no one would be able to follow them. “Where are you?” “A place called the Illumination, about five days’ aircar ride from where you are.” 2
Sarah Dickson She knew the name, but not where it was. “You have maps I can work with?” “I’ll download them to your comm now.” Her father, convicted of treason and sentenced to death for conspiracy against the Empire, had fled the fortress on Reiah. He’d reached the station hidden in a nearby cave before his pursuers had. From there, he managed to open a gateway and escaped to Kagistan. Sandray spent weeks convincing the cronies of the self-appointed Emperor that her father had fled in an aircar to the desert, and then died. Anything but direct their attention to the gateway, which they didn’t know how to open. She’d played the bimbo and it had worked. Her pursuers had given up and left a month later. She’d fled that very day. Beep! Sandray jumped. It was finished. “A couple more things, Sandray. One, you need a guide.” “What for? I have maps and an aircar.” “Hear me out, you impatient woman,” he said with a twinkle in his eye. “You must contact a man called Esterol.” “Who’s Esterol?” “He’s rash, impulsive and will aid you if there’s something in it for him. Make sure you stay here when he arrives. Look confused. Make him believe you created a gateway to get here.” “I did,” she protested. “I made the mistake of wandering off. He found me and sent me packing. Thought I was an idiot.” 3
Gateway “Dad, for the record, you look like a prophet.” “There’s a reason for that. Prophets are popular here, in particular at the Illumination. I made it because I pretended to be a true man of the faith. You don’t have the same advantage.” She knew where this was heading. “You want me to convince Esterol to be my guide. What if I can’t be bothered?” Men, while a nice distraction, weren’t high on her agenda right now, especially the something in it for me kind. Were there any other kind? If so, she’d never met them. “There’s a fringe group called the Pasters who don’t like visitors like you and me. I’ve encountered them, and trust me, they’re nasty.” Sandray had two lasers in her bag and an aircar that flew pretty fast if she pushed it. After spending her whole life in the equivalent of a war zone, Sandray was sure she’d be able to handle anything. “I’m not convinced why I need to wait for Esterol.” “He’s got something we need.” That was more like it. “What?” She knew that grin. He was going to win. “Esterol wants to open up trade between other worlds. Promise him you can. Besides, he knows his way around Kagistan due to his other…activities, and he has a weakness for pretty women. Charm him a bit. I know you did that with the professor to get the comm for me.” Charm. She bit her lip to stop herself from laughing. Her father didn’t know the half of it. The 4
Sarah Dickson professor liked to watch her play with her body. In exchange he’d given her two sophisticated comm units. Without them, she and her father wouldn’t have been able to communicate. That a woman could have a brain was a hard concept for some men. It had been easier to give a peep show. She had to admit she enjoyed it as well, but to have a man who wanted to share equally in bed would be so much more fun. “Meet Esterol at least.” She may as well give Esterol a chance. If it looked like he was going to be a problem, she’d risk the trip on her own. “Ok. I’ll wait.” He nodded. “He’ll be on his way.” “Gotta go,” Sandray said, and pocketed the comm in her bag. She crossed the tiled mosaic floor covered with random patterns of blue, grey and red. Such beautiful work. A pity she didn’t have time to study it in detail. Fading light fell onto the grass outside the entrance of the station. Assuming the layout to the other station was similar, the depression to activate the door should be somewhere along the nearby wall. She took a quick peek outside on the way. Lights from the township of Landon flickered in the distance. Sandray removed one of the lasers in her bag and set the beam on wide. Perfect for lighting, and harmless should she cast the beam over anyone living. Not so if she narrowed it. It had cut someone in two at close range once. 5
Gateway Hopefully Esterol was friendly and it wouldn’t come to that. She searched for a depression and found it. Click! A door slid open. Light from her laser fell onto uneven steps, broken in some places. Dust rose as she ascended. She looked out one of the windows. The number of trees continued to amaze her. Desert surrounded the fortress she’d fled from. The only trees she’d seen had borne fruit and were used to feed the population, who worked, lived and died there. She shuddered. It was a prison in more ways than one. Finally she reached the entrance to the control room. It was pitch black, dusty and felt like a tomb. A wide arc of light filled the room. The console was a mess of buckled metal. Some low-level firearm had been used on it, and looking at the thick dust, some time ago. She ran her finger over a broken edge. Dust crumbled and particles drifted into the air. Sandray placed the laser to one side. Running her fingers between two blocks of stone, she found a recess just beneath the window. She pressed. A grinding noise made her jump back. Sandray snatched her laser before it fell. In the middle of the stone, now split, a tray appeared. Several crystals the size of her longest finger stuck out of the top. Which one did she have to take? There it was. 6
Sarah Dickson She turned a crystal in the centre, and a soft pink glow filled her immediate area. A beam of light from outside the window made her pause. Someone had entered the station. Shit. He’d know she was here. That’s the point, isn’t it? She turned the crystal faster, until it eventually came free. The pink glow died. She quickly shoved it in her bag. Whoever it was had paused at her aircar. Soft light from the lantern bathed his body. His back was to her. He looked a tad taller than she was. So far, things were looking good. Would Esterol be the distraction she needed? Did she want a distraction? Sandray pushed her hip against the tray to close it, and decided against it. If she wanted to impress, how better could this look? Footsteps drew closer, until light filled the doorway. “Who are you?” a voice said with an accent she couldn’t define. His voice was low and had a husky edge to it. Sandray shone her beam onto him. He carried a lantern, which he raised. “Do you mind turning that off?” She would have if he weren’t so gorgeous. She lowered the beam to his chest. The soft light from his lantern was doing a damn fine job of his face as it was. His unruly light brown hair fell in soft waves she 7
Gateway wanted to run her hands through. His face reminded her of a fine work overlaid with hard edges. His blue eyes gazed with amusement as he appeared to assess her with equal curiosity. He looked about thirty, younger than she was. Things were looking better and better. She left it to her imagination what lay beneath the loose top and pants he wore. Not that loose, she mused. Muscles a runner would have. She didn’t like them too hard, except in one place, of course. Her beam drifted to his groin. She detected a twitch from that particular area, or was she imagining it? Her nipples hardened as she imagined herself riding him while he writhed beneath her. Moisture built up between her legs. She squirmed, just thinking about it. His blue eyes sparkled with what looked like lust and admiration. “You can turn it off now.” Sandray did, nearly dropping the laser in the process. His gaze drifted behind her. “How did you do that?” The console. Start acting smart, baby. Two strides later he was beside her. He smelled of musk and a hint of wine. His hand briefly touched her back, sending a jolt up her spine. She hadn’t anticipated such an electrifying contact from a complete stranger. Esterol’s hand lingered on the small of her back. It took all her effort not to just lean back, turn slightly 8
Sarah Dickson and taste those full lips. As if guessing her intent, he leaned towards her, so close she could almost brush his stubby cheek. He held the lantern over the console. “I didn’t know there was a backup unit.” She breathed him in again and this time got a whiff of that indefinable hormone that was going to send her into delicious trouble. Slowly, his words filtered through her lust-addled brain. What backup unit? Pretend you know what you are doing. “Well, there is,” she retorted. He removed his hand from her back. “So I see. I’m Esterol, who are you?” My guide and protector. Whew! Five days with him. Her knees weakened. Wait, hormones, you haven’t asked him yet. She had never been rendered senseless by a touch before. “Sandray.” His lingering gaze spoke of what he wanted from her. She hadn’t read him wrong at all. Her father was right about Esterol liking women. Wait until he offers to be your guide first. “Unusual name. Not from here, are you?” She squeezed her legs together. This was ridiculous. A cat in heat had more control than this. “Obviously.” Esterol slid his arms around her, pinning her to the console. He pressed against her back, his hardness right against her butt. He fingered one of the crystals, 9
Gateway twisting it one way then another. Her nipples hardened through her linen top as she imagined them being teased and suckled. “Do you want to show me?” “No,” she said between quickening breaths. He backed away. Sandray turned to face him. His finger strayed to her neckline, venturing lower until he touched her nipple. “Probably wise.” After a sharp intake of breath, she pressed her body into him. The indefinable maleness of him tantalized her nostrils. Sliding her hands under the hem of his top proved no barrier at all, until she touched solid muscle. What felt like an electrical current passed through her body. He tensed. That was a surprise. Not used to a woman taking the initiative. “Relax,” she whispered. She tilted her chin upward, and her lips met his. Her tongue parted his and slowly delved into the recesses of his moist mouth. She tasted wine as she probed deeper. Fire surged between her legs. The thrill of the first time returned. Nothing tasted as good as this. His erection seemed to grow. She parted her legs, giving him more access. He moaned softly, before abruptly released her. His cheeks were flushed and his breathing heavy. “Do you usually welcome men this way?” To get what she wanted, always, but she didn’t need to tell Esterol that. Men were so easy once sexual 10
Sarah Dickson favors were promised. One thing she’d learned was not to delay the seduction. He was going to be quite tasty fare after the stuffy professor she’d left behind. “Most men don’t seem to mind. Do you?” He shook his head. “No. Well. Yes.” Sense returned. Best get him away from the crystals. She grabbed her bag, hooked her arm under his and steered him out of the room. “Where to now?” Esterol picked up his torch from the floor. Clearing his throat, he said. “You need a place to stay. Come.”

sterol reeled from what was happening to him. He was used to taking the initiative with women, not the other way around. Sandray was fast, too fast, like him. It was like looking into a mirror. In a way it thrilled him. He imagined her in bed, wild and relentless all night long and possibly the next, if she proved interesting enough. His erection became impossibly hard at the thought of her riding him. His thoughts cleared when they reached the main entrance of the station. His cock regained some sense and settled down. A good sign. No woman had sent him into uncontrolled free-fall before. Even when he’d touched her nipple, a totally provocative thing to do with a stranger, a current had flowed between them. No, he corrected, more like a lightning strike. Think. His gaze fixed on her face. Her hair was dark brown and lustrous, not unusual for these parts. Her olive skin was, however. Exotic came to mind. He had to think how she got here. The cool air outside made it easier, as well as some space between them. The sensor had picked her up. One moment nothing, next, there she was. He was sure she’d come from beyond the gate, and intended to find out how she did it. 12
Sarah Dickson “I can’t leave my aircar here.” He spun around. Where was his mind? “No. Of course you can’t.” The sleek metal hull looked new, not like the aircars he possessed. They were two centuries old and made up of spare parts. “I’ll guide this, if you don’t mind.” Without the aircar she’d not get far. She took in a deep breath. “If I wanted to run away from you, I could have by now.” Was that a threat, or a warning for him to trust her? He wasn’t sure, yet. He would have to get to know her better—an odd concept for him, but necessary. He leaned over the aircar and powered it up. Quickly glancing at the console, some of the instrumentation appeared to be the same, but not all. He glanced at the speed her aircar could travel. Suppressing a low whistle, he wished it were his. Many of the trips he took were to remote areas to find artifacts. With this aircar, he could do the trip in half the time. Gripping the side, he guided it out of the station. Outside, he turned off his torch, plunging them into semi-gloom. Moonlight filtered through the trees. They passed under another copse of trees towards the town, but he had no plans of going there. The hut was secluded from prying eyes, the Pasters in particular. She looked skywards. “I’ve never seen such big trees before.” 13
Gateway He stopped mid-stride. “Are you serious?” “Yes. All I’ve seen is desert. The trees that do exist are inside the fortress and are small. Trees here exist for their beauty, not to serve a purpose. Like our whole-” She broke off. “It doesn’t matter anymore.” The sadness in her voice made him see her briefly in a different light. What had she escaped from? He wasn’t sure he wanted to know. They resumed walking. Sandray reminded him of the old man who’d come before. Esterol had found him wandering near the river, miles away. He’d looked hot, flustered and just a bit mad. He didn’t believe the man’s story, and after giving him some food, sent him on his way. In hindsight, he shouldn’t have been so hasty in getting rid of him. Perhaps his stories about being able to reopen the gateway were true. He steered the aircar into the forest. The hut would be the safest place to hide it. The night grew darker as the canopy thickened. They reached a clearing, and the moonlight returned. “Stay here.” He lowered the car at the back of the hut, turned off the power and covered it with a blanket. The way she stood in the moonlight looking so vulnerable, made him catch his breath. He imagined that if he’d fled from another world, he’d be a bit unsure too. “This is my home,” indicating the door. She turned on a torch and shone her beam over it. Her face seemed to brighten considerably. “Did this 14
Sarah Dickson come from the control room?” Any pent-up desire fled with that question. “My father removed it from the station decades ago, and had it fitted as a door. You’re the first person who has had any idea of what it means.” Her finger ran slowly over one of the lines, past a circle and down another. “This is just like the one back at—” She abruptly shut up. What did she know? Time to find out. “What does it mean?” She looked at him as if he were ignorant. “You knew about the backup unit in the control room, and don’t know the meaning of this? I think you’re lying to me.” He raised his hands in mock surrender. “I don’t know that much. Only that all the lines converge to here, to a place called the Illumination.” “Which is why we came here.” His heart froze then started again. Was it possible she could re-open the gateway, enabling all the stations to become operational again? The other word she used finally triggered a warning bell in his head. The old man who’d arrived a month earlier. The two of them must know each other. “You mentioned we. Who else is with you?” “My father. Have you seen him?” Oh, no. He really had messed up. He was her father.. Playing it down, he said, “I saw him, but he left. I don’t know where.” She smiled as if bemused. It surprised him. She 15
Gateway obviously knew where he was or she’d be frantic with worry. How the hell did she contact him? He glanced at her bag. Whatever she used must be in there and by the size of the bulge, looked like there would be other useful items as well. He decided to tread carefully. He would gain her confidence before he confided too much in her. “The gateway shut down two centuries ago.” She nodded slowly. “Do you have any idea why?” How much did she know? “No.” The lie didn’t sound convincing, even to him. “I can understand your reluctance in refusing to share information with me. Being guarded is good.” “You aren’t exactly being open either.” She seemed to consider that. “I’ll think we should discuss terms before we continue.” Esterol traded goods he salvaged from ruins, in exchange for weapons. It was dangerous traveling in some parts of Kagistan without weapons. Trading for information was new to him. “Like what?” She leaned against him, her nose almost touching his. He breathed in her womanly scent. “I need you to take me to the Illumination and I’m sure there are ways I can accommodate you.” His cock flicked back to life. Her move was not lost on him, not one bit. As much as he wanted to feel those full lips on his again, he’d not use sex as a means to trade. He preferred it to be freely given. With an effort, he gently pushed her away. “You seem more than capable of finding your father on 16
Sarah Dickson your own.” “I could, but he suggested I go with you.” Sending the old man away had been a mistake. “I shouldn’t have been so hasty in sending him on his way.” The look of surprise on her face meant she didn’t know. Damn. Her gaze went hard. “Why did you?” Time to dig his way out. “Men take on the name of an ancient deity in the belief that they can obtain aid to get to the Illumination. I mean, Calron. What sort of fool would take on a name like that?” She placed her hand over her mouth, and began to laugh. “Calron is his real name.” He wanted to tell her it wasn’t funny, but part of him warmed to her laughter. **** What an incredible coincidence. “It’s his real name, truly.” His eyes widened, then narrowed. “You’re serious.” She carefully placed her hand on his wrist, a gesture she used on recalcitrant men. With what she hoped was a pleading look, she said. “Did my father say anything to you before you sent him away?” She kept the longing gaze up until he began to waver. “Calron wanted to go to the source that controls 17
Gateway the gateway, which is at the Illumination. That’s not common knowledge, by the way, and I have no idea how he knew.” She sure did. The records from the station in Reiah, while scanty in some areas were useful in others. “Go on.” “Many people believe the Illumination is a place to find themselves. I was wrong in sending your father away.” “You were, but I’m sure he’ll forgive you.” He seemed taken aback. Not what she intended at all. Heck. Men were supposed to be easier than this. He ran his hand over his chin. “What if another person arrives through the gateway looking for you or your father?” She removed the crystal from her bag. “This will ensure they don’t.” He smiled. “You’re smarter than I thought.” Annoyed with that remark, she pocketed it again. She didn’t like the way he kept gazing at her bag. “Can I have a look at what you contacted your father with?” So that was what he was after. Goods to trade with. She’d not be above shooting him if he tried. “No.” “A fair answer.” Cupping her elbow, he drew her close. “Where to from here, Sandray?” She inclined her head in the direction of the door. “What about inviting me in?” “Of course. What am I doing?” He opened the door and turned a light on. Sandray looked around the large room. It was 18
Sarah Dickson simply furnished with a large wooden table, chairs, some ornaments and what looked like a basic kitchen. A ladder to her right ended at mezzanine level. Since there was no obvious sign of a bed elsewhere, it must be up there. Wandering over to the table, she ran her hand over the polished timber. Such a rare thing, wood. On Reiah, the very wealthy could buy it from remote areas that were still heavily forested. She pulled out a stool, dropped her bag behind her, and sat. From a nearby cupboard, Esterol removed an earthenware jug and two goblets. He placed them on the table. “I’ve not eaten for hours. What about you?” Sandray picked up a goblet and took a sip. Wow! Wine was rationed at the fortress and available only in small bottles. It looked like that wasn’t a problem here. She took a sip. It was rich, much richer that what she was used to. “Sandray?” Her stomach growled. She was hungry. “Please.” She drained half the goblet in one go. The wine went straight to her head. She was going to have to get some food inside before she touched another drop. Cupping her chin, she watched Esterol as he reached for some plates. Those pants fitted quite snugly over his butt. She imagined her hands cupping each cheek, before she slowly slid her fingers over his hips to his cock. Her fingers then ran playfully up and down his shaft as she continued to fantasize. 19
Gateway She shuddered all over as she thought about what she'd do next. He turned around, carrying a tray of what looked like berries. Placing the tray on the table, he said, “I want you, Sandray, but not as part of a deal.” Her nipples hardened, and she shivered in anticipation under his smoldering gaze. “Are you cold?” She nodded, pretending that she was. “We’ll fix that up soon enough.” Two strides later, he caught her around the waist and spun her around. His tongue delicately teased her bottom lip. She parted them, and he delved deep into her mouth, sending another shiver throughout her body. She was about to ensnare his tongue with hers when he released her. “Still cold?” It took all her effort not to spin out of control. “Er, no.” He hardly looked fazed at all. “What do you want, Sandray?” She stared at him, dumbfounded. Few ever asked what she wanted. “Sandray?” “To be reunited with my father, what else?” “If that’s all, did you think you’d have to seduce me to aid you? I’d rather you wanted me for yourself, not to get something from me.” Every man is after something, no matter how he words it. He cupped her chin. “I’ll take you to the 20
Sarah Dickson Illumination, regardless if you want me or not. There are other things you have that more that compensate for any lack of recreation.” No way was he serious about that. His smoldering gaze made it clear he wanted to fuck her now. So what was she waiting for? He returned to his seat. She drank deeply from the goblet. The wine was sweet, heady and rich. To her utter surprise she said, “Can I think about it?” Esterol nodded. He really was going to give her a choice. “Since you’re undecided, why not come out with me for a look around Landon.” Why had she remained undecided? Sandray wasn’t sure what part of her brain made that decision. The remainder of his words sunk in. It had been a long time ago since anyone had asked her out. “I’d like that.” He reached for her bag. “Best if I hide it.” She suddenly felt defenseless. Both her lasers were in it, plus the comm. “I’m not sure about that.” “I promise you, it will be safe here.” She hesitated. The expression in his blue eyes seemed to plead for trust. She nodded. For now, she’d have to do just that. The mischievous look returned. “Wait here. I’ll have to get you something else to wear. You’ll attract too much notice in those clothes.” Looking down at her crumpled top and pants, she 21
Gateway did need to change. The only thing was, did he plan to watch?

sterol climbed down from the ladder from the mezzanine above. He looked totally transformed, with his hair brushed and tied back. The blue pants he wore hugged his thighs without being too tight. The top was tighter than the one he’d worn before, but still loose enough for her to run her hands beneath. Probably hoping she would. “You look nice,” she said, and meant it. Besides, compliments were good for a man. Esterol frowned. Had she erred in judging how he may react, or he didn’t receive too many compliments? “Did I say something wrong?” “I didn’t expect it.” He handed a folded blue cloth to her. “You’ll attract less attention if you wear this.” She unraveled it, revealing a long-sleeved dress that came to her thighs. As anticipated, he wasn’t going to move. “You want to watch?” He gave her a smile that sent her pulse racing. “I’ll turn around if you want me to, but I’d rather watch.” Two can play that game. She turned around so her 23
Gateway back was to him, and removed her top. He wasn’t going to see too much too soon. Ignoring the sharp intake of breath behind her, she considered removing her pants. Going totally naked could be too much of a temptation for both of them. Instead, she slipped the dress on and let it fall to her knees. Turning around, she untied the drawstring of her pants. They fell to the ground. Liquid fire filled his eyes. “What’s this dress made of?” The question took the edge off his smoldering gaze. “Linen and wool. It suits you.” Did she detect a faint rush of pink on his cheeks as he said it? He grabbed a blanket from the table beside the front door and slung it over his arm. **** Street lamps illuminated the town. Landon reminded her of the stories that her great-grandmother told her. Where one could go outside, day or night, and not be stopped by a guard. Where food was eaten for pleasure as much as for sustenance. Where music and laughter was unrestrained. Wandering the streets, she began to appreciate what her great-grandmother had meant. People peered out of the windows of stone buildings to the street below. Some called to children who ran along the cobbled street, not to stray too far. A woman ran out of a nearby doorway to chase a 24
Sarah Dickson small girl, who squealed in delight as she was scooped up in her mother’s arms. Sandray paused beneath a street lamp to remove a stone from her sandal. After straightening, she became aware of Esterol looking intently at her. “What is it?” He seemed to be noticing her properly for the first time. “You have lovely amber eyes.” No man had ever said anything like that to her before. It was usually lies about love and how she drove them wild. “So do you.” He smiled warmly. He wasn’t so self-conscious this time. Esterol nodded to some of the villagers as they passed. Many of the men gave Sandray more than a passing glance. Esterol smiled broadly. He was showing her off. Typical of a man. A young woman gave Esterol a knowing smile. He’d probably bedded quite a lot of women. Careful too, or was he? She had no idea if he’d sired children in the hundreds or not. He’d not have that problem with her. Minor surgery had removed that danger. Besides, Reiah was a place she could never imagine bringing another life into. Another woman in the street glared at Sandray with open hostility. Sandray observed Esterol’s reaction. He averted his gaze from the woman and felt his grip on her hand tighten. 25
Gateway It seemed that woman had been a mistake. The crowd gradually thickened, and she heard flutes and drums in the distance. There must be a festival on. The buildings had changed too. These were older, made of stone as well as some black material she’d never seen before. The mismatched shapes indicated many modifications, resulting in what appeared to be a bizarre art form rather than a building. It certainly added character. They soon reached an open area. Sandray soaked in the cool evening air, a dramatic contrast to the furnace at home. The smells of the meats and cakes from nearby stalls became wonderfully intoxicating. Landon was definitely a place she could live in for awhile. Not so the fortress she’d fled. All of Reiah used to have trees and running water. War had ruined their Eden, reduced parts of it to fortresses surrounded by desert. All in the space of three generations. “Sandray?” “Sorry. Just reminiscing.” Like hell she was. She’d die rather than go back there. Esterol didn’t press. Part of her hoped he would. No. This was a fun night out; forget any heart on the sleeve stuff. Esterol guided her to the nearest stall. Sandray salivated over the pastries on the table before her. Esterol handed the woman a brass coin, then picked up and offered a pastry to Sandray. 26
Sarah Dickson “You’ll never experience anything better that this.” The woman behind the table chuckled. “Never you mind his words, lass, he’s a smooth rascal.” Esterol took the woman’s hand, raised it to his lips and kissed it. She snatched her hand from his, blushing. “Be off with you.” Sandray bit into the pastry. It was rich in blueberry flavor, and delicious. “Come on,” he said to Sandray. “I want to get a spot near the stage.” “What’s on?” “You’ll see.” They moved through the crowd towards the centre of what looked like a large park. Solar lanterns lit the perimeter of the stage. Sweat and excitement filled the air. Esterol draped the blanket on a patch of grass near the stage. “This is the beginning of our midsummer performances. I’m sure something will enrapture you.” What an enigma he was. First he wanted to bed her and then he was prepared to suffer if she refused. She was confident that would change, sooner rather than later. Laughter from behind made her look back the way they’d came. People leaned out of windows, shouting to those in the street below. Others stood on roofs. She hadn’t seen people in such numbers in her entire life. Concerts on Reiah were infrequent, and when they did occur, were held indoors and the atmosphere austere to say the least. 27
Gateway A man walked past with a tray of small flasks. Esterol handed him a silver coin, removed two from the tray and handed one to her. “Try this.” She took a swallow. It was sweet and rich, similar to what she’d drunk at the hut. “What is it?” “A rich red. Have some more.” She took another swallow and the feeling of utter relaxation returned. The lights dimmed. She felt the material on her dress being nudged up her thighs. His lips brushed her neck, sending a shiver along her body. She wondered how long his self-imposed celibacy would last. “I’m trying to help you decide. Shall I continue?” She knew where this would go, and trembled with excitement. “Yes,” she purred. “Lift your legs up until your knees touch your chin. Then I want you to hold your legs in place. Under no circumstance, move.” Thrilled at being the recipient for once, she did as ordered. A cool breeze touched her moist centre. Parting her knees just a little, she waited in anticipation. Warm fingers teased her nether lips in tiny up and down strokes, tantalizingly close to her clit which he steered clear of. Her breathing quickened. This was definitely an interesting change to the usual fare of lovers. 28
Sarah Dickson Silence fell as the first performer came onto the stage. He swung a torch into the air then another until several rotated like a burning wheel. The crowd clapped as the torches spun around in sync with the steady beat of a drum. She’d seen flame jugglers with five or more torches, but this man had more. Esterol began to tease her throbbing mound in tiny circles. Her body felt like it was going to burn. Liquid fire surged straight to her core. The torches became a blur. The clapping came faster and faster. Sandray wanted to lie back, let him take her, but he’d ordered her not to move. She squirmed as he thrust a finger into her dripping passage, moving in and out in a half-beat to the drum. The arc of light twisted like a snake as the juggler changed the direction of the torches. The crowd stood up, blocking their view, which Sandray was thankful for. A man shouted, then another. Feet thumped and hands clapped. Sandray writhed with the beat of the clapping, desperately wanting to lie on her back and let him fuck her senseless. Esterol was ruthless. She mewled like a cat, but no one was looking at her, too enraptured with the juggler. She released the grip on her leg, and tried to prize his wrist from her vagina, a big mistake. He thrust another finger in, repeating the half beat. His lips covered hers, stopping her from crying out loud. His other arm steadied her. Her body bucked while Esterol continued relentlessly. He wasn’t finished with her. His tongue in her 29
Gateway mouth thrust in rhythm to his fingers. She squirmed, feeling the moistness between her legs flow what seemed like a river. The crowd began to sit. Esterol thrust deeper, making her whimper, attracting the woman nearby. Sandray squirmed as he persisted, wanted to scream his name. She arched her body, and a deep shuddering orgasm blasted through her. It took everything in her will to stop shouting. He withdrew his fingers. The lights dimmed as another performer took the stage. Between ragged breaths, he whispered in her ear, “I want you, right now.” Heat surged from her nipples to her core. “Do you want me to suck you senseless, here?” He looked at her sharply. She snuggled against him, and began to cup his cock through the cloth. Boy, was he hard. A sharp gasp from Esterol made her pause. She gripped his cock, squeezing it. “Imagine my tongue doing this, sucking you hard.” He tensed. “Sandray. Please. I’ll—” The woman nearby stared in genuine disgust. Sandray licked her lower lip, and the woman abruptly looked away. Were there others? She spotted a couple in the middle of a passionate embrace, and a man who was grinning at them. An audience didn’t bother Sandray, but Esterol 30
Sarah Dickson appeared adamant. She gave the tip of his cock a quick flick with her finger. “Keep imagining it.” Esterol took in a deep breath. “I will.” Several other entertainers came and went, their shows growing more spectacular. Eventually, lights flooded the stage, making Sandray wince. Esterol’s hand fell down the nape of her neck to her shoulder. “Do you want to go? I’m dying for you.” “Still thinking what I’m going to do to you.” He nodded sharply. Sandray felt someone’s gaze on her. She looked around, and saw a tall young man leering at her. A memory threatened to resurface. Esterol gripped her arm. “Damn. They’ve seen us.” A middle-aged woman with short blond hair approached, followed by the man. The way he continued to leer at Sandray annoyed her. “Who are they?” “The Pasters. That woman, Kyra, is their leader. Don’t say a thing.” Sandra cursed. Not the kind of attention she needed at all. “Good evening Esterol,” Kyra said. Esterol slid his arm protectively around Sandray. “What do you want, Kyra?” The planes on her face were hard. Sandray suspected such hardness extended to her heart. “We intercepted a signal at the station earlier tonight. I know you keep an eye on things there. Did you see anyone leaving?” Kyra was referring to the comm. Sandray didn’t 31
Gateway think the signal could be traced, worrying her. “No idea,” Esterol said. Kyra’s cold gaze fixed on Sandray. Her emerald eyes seemed translucent in this light. “You don’t look like you’re from these parts.” “It’s a festival. Visitors come from all over,” Esterol said coldly. Kyra inclined her head in the direction of her companion. “Kalen will keep an eye on your progress.” “Or lack of it.” Kalen said, barely suppressing a sneer. Like hell you will, Sandray wanted to say, but kept her mouth shut. Kalen took a step closer. He stank of wine, and desperately needed a bath. Worse, he invoked nightmares she would rather have left buried. Her attacker had looked so much like Kalen. It took her effort not to throw up in front of him. She shuddered as the memory returned. Her attacker had straddled her, held a knife against her throat. Sandray had drawn her laser and fired, point blank. He had been cut clean in half. She fought down the bile in her throat. The aftermath had not been pretty. “I’ll meet you at the Illumination,” Kyra said. “If either of you last that long.” Kalen stepped back, as if on cue. The inference was not lost on Sandray. Kyra wanted her dead. Kyra and Kalen disappeared into the crowd. 32
Sarah Dickson “Don’t let him near me again,” she warned. Esterol’s grip on Sandray’s shoulder went hard, making her wince. “We’re going to have to be very careful from now on.”

Chapter Four
I
t was the way Kalen leered at her that annoyed Esterol the most. No man would touch her if he had anything to do with it. Sandray was too valuable to lose. As for her reaction to Kalen, that bothered him more. He had seen that look before, in the eyes of a woman who’d been attacked by a man. “What happened to him?” Her eyes narrowed. “Who?” “Your attacker.” She clenched her eyes shut then re-opened them. “I killed him,” she said harshly. He’d had a few scrapes with the Pasters, but had never killed anyone. Well, not at close range. It made a big difference, shooting an aircar that was too far away to see the occupant. It never became personal. To kill at point blank range, would. He hoped he’d never have to. Sandray leaned into his chest. Surprised at the gesture, he slid his arms around her. “We’ll leave later tonight.” Looking up at him, the mischievous look returned 34
Sarah Dickson to her eyes. Cupping his balls, she said, “So we have time to attend to unfinished business?” Moving her hand from his rock-hard cock, he said, “This way.” Soon, trees surrounded them. It became dark and very quiet. Closing in, he slid his arm around her waist and devoured her mouth with his tongue. An electrifying jolt of desire shot up through his body, making him gasp. He pressed her up against a nearby tree. “It’s your turn,” she whispered. He’d not forgotten. “Let’s go back to the hut.” She looked around. “This looks private enough to me.” Before he could protest, Sandray’s mouth sealed his. Her tongue wrapped around his, diving further into his mouth. Lights exploded behind closed eyes. His swollen member was driving him mad with need. He slipped his hands beneath her top, exploring the silkiness of her skin. Caressing her breasts, he worked in slow, teasing movements. Hands slid to his drawstring. “What are you thinking?” she murmured. He imagined her tongue over his cock. His knees weakened as he fantasized. “What you said before.” “Just keep imagining it.” A cool breeze brushed his thighs. His pants were around his ankles. She knelt in front of him and cupped his balls. He lifted a leg and kicked his pants free. Widening his legs, he leaned back against the tree. 35
Gateway “Close your eyes.” He did, and imagined they were back in the park. Esterol felt her mouth descend over the tip of his cock. Her tongue ran over the slit in quick movements, making him groan. Hands tightened and loosened over his shaft. Standing so still was agony. She eased his cock deeper into her mouth. In slow steady movements, she took him in fully, then released him. The moisture of her mouth and then the cool breeze between each thrust made his skin incredibly sensitive. Suddenly she shoved his cock deep into her mouth and sucked him hard, causing him to spill some of his seed into her. “Sandray, stop.” She gripped his buttocks, pushing him in deeper until her tongue licked the back of his shaft, making him shudder all over. He felt like a clumsy teenager again. He convulsed with his orgasm, coming into her mouth. Never had he been so out of control. She stood up and kissed his lips, tasting the bitter salt of his seed. “You didn’t give me a chance, so why should you be treated any different? Now you’ll be ready to go nice and slow.” Touché, he thought. “Back to the hut,” she ordered. “I want to fuck you properly, unless you want to leave?” “We have time,” he said huskily. Light streamed from the moonlight through the windows onto the surrounding walls. He climbed the ladder to the bed. Soon Sandray lay beside him, as 36
Sarah Dickson naked as he was. She idly ran her finger down his chest to his rigid shaft. Ignoring the searing heat of her touch, he got a good look at her. Her long legs were taut, as was the rest of her. He had five days of this ahead of him, before she met her father at the Illumination. Five days was going to be a record. Esterol planted little kisses onto her breasts, just missing the nipples. She parted her legs slightly, giving him a glimpse of her curls, as dark and lustrous as her hair. His breath caught in his throat and his stomach tightened. She was so beautiful. Kneeling in front of her, he hoisted her legs around his waist. He gasped at her moistness as he went in full. Moving in a slow rhythm, his breathing became more erratic as he reached deep inside her soft depths. His finger found her mound, and teased it in gentle curricular motions. Sandray shifted slowly from side to side as a cat would when it stretched in the morning. “Don’t stop.” “I don’t intend to.” He took her slowly, savoring her body. Her nipples were so taut. He reached with his free hand and kneaded one. “This is wonderful,” she murmured. He enjoyed seeing a woman like this during sex. “I need to build up my reserves so you’ll enjoy the ride.” She ran her tongue over her lips. “Maybe I was just 37
Gateway a bit too hard on you.” He began to withdraw. ‘I’ll have you begging yet.” She locked him with her legs, forcing him back in. “You don’t have to be so gentle.” As tempting as it was to dive in and take her, he refused. “I’m afraid I can’t do that. Would ruin my reputation.” Sandra burst our laughing, sending tremors throughout her body into his cock. “Ohhhh,” he groaned. It took all his effort not to go faster and bring release to this exquisite torture. Her fingers went to her nipples, teasing them. “There. Is that helping you?” She tightened her butt, squeezing his cock. He felt as if he was going to burst. “Oh, no, you don’t.” He’d not give her the satisfaction. She gave a smug smile. “Oh, yes, I will.” Esterol lowered his head and began to lick her areola in tiny circles around her nipple. She gasped. “Esterol. I have never... oh never mind.” “Been pleasured so well,” he finished. She smacked his butt, sending a jolt of sheer delight over his body. “Now it’s my turn. Lift yourself up a bit.” He watched Sandray’s fingers slide down his chest until they reached his shaft. She began to rotate her finger over her mound. The sight of her pleasuring herself made him almost lose himself. He never imagined what a turn-on that could be. “Esterol. What are you doing? Have you lost it?” 38
Sarah Dickson He thrust in again. “Hardly.” “I’m begging you to go a bit faster.” Begging. Hmm. “No.” She groaned. “I’m going to have to push you along.” “And exactly how do you plan to do that?” “Like this.” In one deft movement, he was on his back. She smiled after she positioned herself above him. Esterol could not believe how she did that with him still inside her. If this was her way of getting an orgasm out of him, she was going to succeed. She raised herself a little then plunged down hard. “Ah, that’s better.” Her breasts wiggled with each downward stroke. He felt the build growing inside her as her vagina tightened his cock. It took all his effort to stay in control. That all changed when her hand cupped his balls, gently squeezing them. Suddenly, he reached the peak of a long steady climb with no place to go, but down. Lowering herself fully over his cock again, she shuddered. He felt every ripple as if it were his own orgasm. “You’re so hard,” she said, gasping. “Faster,” he pleaded. She grinned down at him. “You want me to fuck you senseless, don’t you?” Who was begging now? “Yes,” he said between gritted teeth. 39
Gateway Instead, she rode him slowly and fully. Damn her. He asked for it by being slow with her. Another flood coursed her body like liquid fire, heating his cock with her moisture. “Writhe under me.” Sandray picked up more speed. Her passage tightened even more around his cock. He felt as if his very essence was about to be sucked out from him. “About time.” Pleasure marked her face and her lips parted as he imagined they would. “Esterol,” she cried. Wave after wave he came into her. He thought he was going to die. “Sandray,” he cried in a hoarse whisper. Never had he experienced anything like this. Sweat dripped from her body, and he suspected, his. The scent of musk and sex filled the room. His heart slowed to a place where he could speak again. He gazed into her dreamy amber eyes. "I have met my match.” "I can see that,” she said, and lifted herself off him. He chuckled and so did she. He felt so comfortable around her. With an effort, Esterol rose to his knees and looked out of the window to the darkness outside. As much as he wanted to stay right here and fuck her all night, they had to go. “We better have a shower and get ready to leave.” **** 40
Sarah Dickson
Sandray climbed down after him, pleased with the throbbing that persisted between her legs. She’d not had such good sex in a long long time, if ever. He turned the light on, jarring her at first, but as her vision adjusted Sandray looked around the room. Boy, did she miss a lot of this before. The floor appeared randomly constructed with large and small pieces of slate, fitted together in a haphazard fashion. Artifacts covered every available surface in sight. Not an organized man at all. Unless this was what he did for a living; traded in goods. Her father would love to see this. A cooker stood in the corner. The stovetop appeared to be made of a black material, nothing like she’d seen before. Esterol poured what looked like a pancake mix onto the black surface. It sizzled, filling the room with a scent similar to fresh bread. “Do we have time to eat?” she asked. “I’m hungry again after our … exertions.” Sandray felt the heat radiate from more than the stove. Not now, you horny woman, concentrate. Watch the man cooking. Without warning, Esterol steered her into to the shower, a small room at the far end. “I’m having enough distractions as it is,” and gently pushed her into the small cubicle. The shower looked like the one she had in her apartment, reminding her of the fortress. It isn’t. And you never have to go back. 41
Gateway He turned on a tap. Warm water cascaded over her body. Esterol fixed on her breasts. She sniffed the air. “I think I smell burning.” He bolted. With him out of the way, she could enjoy the shower. As tempting as it was to linger, she turned the tap off. After being careful of water usage all her life, it was going to be hard to break some habits. Sandray wrapped a towel around her body and returned to the room. Esterol had donned a sarong. He hummed as he flipped a pancake over. Watching him, crazy thoughts entered her mind. Thoughts like seeing him after she was reunited with her father. Cut the sentiment, you fool. He’s a diversion, nothing more. The scent of pancakes wafted towards her. Her stomach growled. He looked around. “That was fast.” He really was quite lovely. “Most of our water is covered or stored underground, and rationed.” He shook his head. “I couldn’t imagine that.” She returned to his side, breathing in his scent, savoring it. He inclined his head towards her. “Was it so bad there?” “If the only danger we face are the Pasters and the odd outlaw, it’s nothing compared to what I left.” He frowned. “I can’t imagine it. Sorry.” That he cared to even ask touched her deeply. He placed the pancakes onto two plates, and 42
Sarah Dickson brought them to the table. Esterol indicated a jar beside where she sat. "Honey. If want some. When had she last seen honey? She couldn't recall. Lifting the jar she poured a generous amount onto the pancake, then grabbed a knife and fork and began to eat. “You have no idea how good it feels being free. No one is watching you or checking your papers at checkpoints. No one—” She stabbed the food. “I’m finding this strange. I don’t mean you. I mean being here, free of—”. Esterol’s gaze became contemplative. “I’m sorry about treating your father the way I did. I’m glad he made it, even if you have attracted the Pasters to us. Can you tell me how you did it?” My this honey was fabulous. She swallowed another morsel before answering. “My comm is quite sophisticated.” She sensed a ripple of tension race across his shoulders. “What are you thinking?” she said suspiciously. “How much that comm you have is worth in the wrong hands? We better make sure that doesn’t happen.” A prickle of warning touched her neck. “Are you planning to steal it from me?” Esterol’s fork stopped mid-air. He nodded. “I did, actually, but—” He lowered his fork. “I suggest you become my companion on this journey. It will save any complications.” It wasn’t hard to guess what that entailed. “Actually, it’s not what you think” he said 43
Gateway seriously. “When a man offers to marry a woman and she agrees, she becomes his companion until the wedding date is set. It’s the safest option I can think of.” “We’ve obviously made this convincing, haven’t we?” “It’s no laughing matter. Pretend to be serious about this when we are in the company of others.” Since he was so serious about it, she dare not make light of the arrangement again. “I can do that.” An easy silence descended between them, giving her time to finish the pancake. Grabbing both plates, he rose. “We should get going. I need to pack some supplies. Can you grab any food from the cupboards?”

Chapter Five
S
andray opened several doors, retrieving what looked familiar from the shelves. There wasn’t much there. Typical of a bachelor’s larder. She found bread and nuts. Not in sufficient quantities to last five days, so she figured they’d be eating at towns on the way. When done, she wrapped the items in a muslin bag. She carried it, and her own bag to the rear of the hut. After she placed the bags in her aircar, she spotted weapons protruding from his. “What type are they?” Esterol seemed surprised at the question. “I know a lot about weapons. Give me a look.” He removed the rifle from his aircar. “This is long range, about two miles.” Was he serious? Old aircars, buildings and...this. Had they ceased to develop anything since the gateway closed? What did these people do? Think the gateway was going to reopen again and everything would be all right? The revelation shook her. “Your civilization hasn’t changed for two centuries.” “How can we? We don’t have anything to make an 45
Gateway aircar from scratch, or weapons for that matter. And when we have tried, the Pasters have sabotaged it. Being reconnected via the gateway is the only way we’ll ever be able to return to what we were.” “And the Pasters will do whatever it takes to prevent it?” He nodded. “No wonder you want to protect me.” He kissed her on the nose. “I messed up with your father. I don’t intend to make that mistake again.” At least he was honest about why he wanted to aid her. “Are you finished with that rifle?” “Not yet.” She looked through the crosshairs, and aimed the rifle into the darkness. For an antique, it felt quite light considering its bulk. “I’d like to try this sometime.” He grabbed it from her and returned it to the aircar. “I’m sure you’ll get your chance.” She removed the bag from her shoulder and placed it in her car. After powering up the aircar, she climbed in. His hand slid over hers. “Does your green button still link aircars?” She nodded. “Good. When we reach the plains, press it, and you’ll link to my car. You can rest then. Maybe you should.” Esterol returned to his car, and they were off. She pressed a blue button to create a shield, and a tinted 46
Sarah Dickson force field surrounded her. Stillness replaced a cool breeze. She decided to leave it up. The forests were extensive and Sandray had to concentrate to avoid crashing into any trees. The light grew brighter as the forests thinned. In the open plain, she could switch to automatic. After another half-hour, she did just that. After checking with a few turns that her car was following Esterol’s, she leaned back against the seat and drifted into sleep. A sudden jerk brought her to full alert. It was just on dawn. They’d slowed near a heavily forested area. Sandray returned to manual and followed Esterol through the trees at an unhurried pace. She looked twice to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. Ahead, she saw a shimmering blue lake, partly blocked by trees. Water, and so much of it. Esterol lowered the car to the ground near a copse of trees. Sandray lowered hers beside his. He jumped from his aircar. Unsure what he was going to do, she watched him remove his clothes at the shore of the lake and wade in. When had she last taken a swim? When had she seen such a body of water? Never. Sandray watched, mesmerized, as he swam from one side of the lake to the other. Old records had mentioned such a pastime. To be immersed in water for pleasure was beyond her experience. Sandray sat on the shore, watching Esterol swim towards her. 47
Gateway He stood waist deep in water. “Come in. It’s wonderful.” The thought of going into so much water caught her off guard. “I don’t know.” “Why not?” “I’ve never been immersed in a large body of water before. Only shallow baths that reach up to my waist.” His face showed utter disbelief. “You’re—. No. I don’t think you are.” She rose. “You enjoy it. I’ll wait by the aircars.” “Take your clothes off and come in. I’ll make sure you won’t drown.” She hesitated. It did look inviting. Esterol strode towards her. Having a naked man beside her was going to be a very bad distraction. He gripped the hem of her dress and lifted it up. She raised her arms, and he removed it completely. Taking her hand, he led her into the lake. She flinched when the cold water caressed her ankles. “We’ll go up to your waist, then we’ll stop.” The muddy bottom felt squishy under her feet as they walked further in. Esterol kept a steady grip on her to stop her from falling. Once she got used to the slippery mud, the cold water became her focus. It crept up her legs to between her thighs. “Argh,” she muttered. The sudden chill dampened any desire that may have lingered. “Just a bit further.” “How far?” 48
Sarah Dickson Barely hiding a grin, he said. “Until your breasts are covered. If not, there’s a risk I’ll suck them senseless.” A surge of heat raced straight to her core, sending away any chill that lingered. No way was she going to have sex in water. “I’d rather not.” Another gasp left her lips as the water reached her nipples. Esterol would have to do a lot of serious suckling to bring them back from the numb zone. Sliding his arms around her waist, he turned her away from him. Such a full, uninterrupted view of so much water made her head spin. “Drink some.” She cupped her hand and took a sip. Such exquisite sweetness. Gentle hands ran up from her waist to her breasts. His hands felt like fire. “You are cold,” he said teasing her nipples. She squired against him, and felt his erection press hard up against her butt. Feeling a bit warmer, but not warm enough, she said, “I need to be warmed up a lot more.” He yawned. The action so surprised her, she spun around to face him. He did look tired. Very tired. “You’re better off sleeping.” “You’re right,” he said, resignation in his voice. “We’ll take this up another time. Do you want me to walk you back?” The sensation of having so much water surrounding her didn’t bother her at all now. “I’ll go.” Esterol swam to where his clothes were. She tried 49
Gateway not to look, but couldn’t help it as he lay naked on top of his clothes. After wading back to the shore, Sandray grabbed her dress and walked over to him. His eyes were closed. Did he feign sleep? His breathing had steadied, and that part of his body showed no reaction to her presence. The night’s drive had caught up with him after all. Sandray returned to the aircar. Save the sounds of a few birds that were unfamiliar to her, it seemed eerily quiet. She removed a piece of flat bread from the bag and bit into it. A bit stale, but delicious compared to what she ate back home. Prepared food was the order of the day at the fortress. Fruit was rationed to once a week and wine was virtually nonexistent. Sex was about the only thing that had been any fun. Sandray planned to make up for lost time. Her stomach settled, she draped a mat under a tree and sat. This place looked idyllic enough but she placed a laser beside her, just in case. Looking around, she began to appreciate the world she’d escaped to. If the Pasters were the greatest danger on Kagistan, and her father failed to re-open the gateway, she could live here easily. She dearly wanted to call him, let him know she was on her way, but that meant the Pasters would be able to track them. She yawned. It was very peaceful here. She closed her eyes. Just a minute or two should be all right. Crack. 50
Sarah Dickson Sandray grabbed her laser, lowered it when Esterol appeared from the shadows. Still naked, he removed some bread and water from the aircar. She kept her eyes riveted to his chest, not daring to stray lower. “Are we staying long?” He slipped on his pants then sat beside her. “Until dusk. You should eat and get some sleep.” She didn’t feel tired at all. “I slept most of the way, and I’ve already eaten. If you need me to keep watch, I’ll do it.” Between mouthfuls, he said, “It’s pretty safe here. Tonight will be a different situation. It’s not so open and I’d rather you were awake.” He draped a blanket beside her, flopped onto it and fell asleep. Sandray’s gaze drifted over his upper body. The planes of his chest definitely needed further exploration. She leaned over, removed a lock of blond hair from his forehead and briefly kissed him. He needed sleep and so did she. She lay down beside Esterol and closed her eyes. A quick nap wouldn’t hurt. Plop. What was that? Sandray wiped her cheek. Plop. She opened her eyes and another droplet fell onto her nose. She wiped it away. Incredible. “Are you going to stand in it or not?” Esterol sounded bemused. Esterol was hammering the last peg into the corner of a makeshift tent over the aircars. 51
Gateway She stood up, letting the droplets fall over her skin. “Is this rain going to stay?” Esterol grabbed her blanket and dress from the ground and returned to the makeshift tent. “At least till nightfall. I suggest you get dressed. You’ll catch a chill.” “Not yet.” Sandray tilted her head upwards, closed her eyes and shivered in delight as the cooling rain cascaded over her body. A tongue flicked over her nipple, making her open her eyes with a start. “Droplets of water falling on your breasts with your arms stretched behind you. Sandray, do you have any idea what you are doing me?” She could, but it hadn’t been her intention. “You have no idea what a sight this is,” she said. “All I have seen are storms and no rain. Do you know people go mad with the hoping and it never comes?” “If you stay here, you’ll freeze. Come on.” From inside the dry tent, she looked out. The rain came down heavier, making it almost impossible to see the trees. She shivered as the air became colder. Esterol slipped a cloak over her shoulders and held her close, warming her. He smelt very very nice. **** When had he last held a woman? She felt good, too good. What was happening to him? He put it down to making sure she was protected. Another useless lie. 52
Sarah Dickson He needed her much more than she needed him. He lifted part of her dark hair and teased it between his fingers. Exposing her neck, he leaned down and kissed her silky skin. “Mmm. That feels nice.” He could get used to having Sandray around. He never felt as comfortable around any woman as he did around her, in or out of bed. Was it possible that he may last the five days with her? It was a challenge that enticed him. A rumble filled the sky. Esterol saw a flash of lightning. “Look, isn’t it wonderful,” Sandray said. What sort of place had she fled that made where he lived seem so extraordinary? He knew so little about her. “Tell me about your home, Sandray.” A light shudder raced down her spine. “All of Reiah was once like this. When the invaders came two centuries ago, our ancestors believed them to be saviors who came from a mysterious gateway. That changed when our ancestors were forced into slavery. War broke out, causing terrible damage to our world. “After the climate shifted about a century ago, parts of Reiah became desert. The Empire built fortresses in these areas, as desert regions are impossible to escape from. When I was born, I didn’t know any different. When my great-grandmother spoke of the gateway, I noticed my father became very interested. It seemed the Empire no longer believed it existed. My father and I spent years 53
Gateway working through historical records, until we found what we believed to be the location of the gateway station. Unfortunately we were betrayed.” She looked away from him as if recalling a particularly painful memory. “My mother became a lover of one of the Emperor’s administrators. They were men who looked in from time to time to make sure we weren’t misbehaving. My father was forced to lead a team dedicated into re-opening the gateway, and I made sure I assisted him. When we needed tools to aid in our own private research, I slept with the relevant men to get what we needed. It became a means to an end.” He had no idea she used sex for survival. “You’ll not have to resort to that with me.” Sandray inclined her head, bemused. “But you have, in a way.” He winced at her words. The truth was the truth. He’d used her, as other men had to get what he wanted. “Esterol. I like the way you pleasure me. You give back what you take. Most of the other men didn’t care how I felt.” He still didn’t feel any better. She stroked the hard planes on his chest. “It doesn’t really matter. Let’s enjoy the time we have left.” He shook his head. It did matter. He handed the blue dress to her. “Get dressed.” Sandray took it reluctantly. “Can I ask you a question?” 54
Sarah Dickson “Sure.” “You were quite evasive with me when we first met. I’d like to think we’ve progressed beyond that.” He nodded, waiting for her to tell him what she really wanted. “Can you tell be more about the mind that controls the gateway?”

sterol’s shocked expression meant that he knew. “How do you know about that?” Obviously it wasn’t general knowledge. “My father considered it to be a computer of some kind, which somehow failed.” He frowned. “A computer handles complex tasks,” she said, hoping to clarify what she meant. Understanding dawned on his face. “It wasn’t a machine.” “What? What else could it be? Surely not a human.” He nodded. “A thousand years ago, a man arrived on my ancestor’s world, Tyra. He was tall, black and human in most ways, except he had no hair. What made him unique was his mental ability. He could read peoples’ thoughts from great distances and by this ability he first encountered our world. He explained how a gateway existed across many star systems and offered us to join them. My ancestors, of course, couldn’t refuse. The construction of a new gateway station on Tyra was going to open incredible 56
Sarah Dickson opportunities. “Usually a Mind was selected from the elite, preferably a person who knew how to work the gateway, either in construction or repair. A genius was the usual choice but they can prove to be temperamental. “A man was found and his mind was copied into what I don’t know specifically, only that it took all ones’ dreams, fears, intuition, everything.” Sandray shuddered at the prospect. "Including their worst secrets.” He smiled. "They considered that. The volunteer was carefully selected.” "How long does a Mind last?” "Two to three centuries. The strong still go mad in the end.” "Are you saying the gateway is controlled by a copy of a human mind?” He nodded. "The last Mind died two centuries ago, which is why the gateway shut down. My ancestors, who were visiting Kagistan, became stranded. The gateway station at Landon hadn’t been activated until a month ago, when your father arrived.” "Did you tell him any of this?” "I told him everything, believe it or not. I didn’t want to risk his life if he was truly the one who could re-open the gateway. He certainly fitted the profile of a temperamental genius.” Temperamental. Her father certainly was that. "Do you think Calron’s agenda is to become the Mind?” 57
Gateway “He didn’t know the Mind was human. I’m not sure what father will do.” “He’ll do it,” Esterol said with certainty. “Your father seemed quite determined to see the gateway reopened. What concerns me is, does he have a deeper agenda?” Esterol really didn’t know her father. If he’d made the effort to do so he wouldn’t be asking these questions. “He’s not the kind to want control. If he could aid in re-opening the gateway, it would be to escape as far as possible from Reiah. That’s his agenda, even if he has to become the Mind to do so.” He didn’t seem convinced. “No one is that selfless.” Before she could answer in her father’s defense, a low beeping sound made her jump. Was it her comm? No. It was off. “What’s that?” Esterol looked at the dashboard of the aircar. “It’s the mid-range sensor.” He glared at her. "Did you use your comm?” "I swear. It’s not even on.” “It must be the Pasters,” he muttered. “If Kyra was going to meet us at the Illumination, why would they bother giving us chase? Why not simply wait for us there?” “She really doesn’t plan on us surviving that far.” Sandray hadn’t taken Kyra literally. What a fool she was. It then occurred to her the risk Esterol took in accompanying her. “I had no idea you would be putting yourself in danger.” The irresistible, devilish grin returned. “Not 58
Sarah Dickson entirely selfish, am I?” Disarmed by his smile, she said, “You’ll retract the statement about using me.” “Retracted.” She removed her comm from the bag. “The rain should shield our exact position. I’m going to find out where they are.” “Can you show me what you’re going to do?” She moved so he could see the screen. “You have an operational satellite, or I’d not have been able to communicate with my father. It means the Pasters have the technology to access it as well.” “So much for an anti-technology group,” he muttered. Sandray turned the comm on and pressed a key. On the screen, land appeared to be running under a set of cross-hairs. It stopped. The forest they were in appeared as a black smudge on the screen, surrounded by brown, which he assumed to be the plains. “This is where we are, at the centre.” “Zoom in,” he said. Three silver objects began to move toward them. So much for being able to use the rain as cover. "We should leave,” Esterol said. "Turn it off.” They packed quickly. Driving an aircar in the rain was a completely new experience for her. With the shield up to stop her getting wet, the battering of raindrops on the screen made seeing ahead difficult. She resorted to the inbuilt tracker. 59
Gateway Nearing dusk, the rain eased. They reached a large building made of stone. It appeared badly damaged. Most of the walls had been blasted away, leaving many of the rooms exposed. “What was this place?” “It was once an overnight stopover. We should be able to use it as cover until dawn.” She looked skyward. The sun had set and the clouds had gone. The fresh smell of damp desert sand filled her nostrils. She breathed in deeply, savoring the moment. Esterol looked at her oddly. “Nothing,” she said. The moon began its ascent above the horizon. Sandray wondered if it wise to stay here for the night. “These are perfect conditions for night travel. Surely the Pasters would look for us here.” “Kalen doesn’t like traveling by night,” he said with a smirk. What had Esterol done to him? Obviously it hadn’t been pleasant. “What did you do?” “I scared the hell out of him one night.” “Tell me what happened,” she said, intrigued. “Let’s find a place to hide first.” The floor was partly covered in mosaic tiles, their images long faded. She would have preferred another level up to gain a vantage point, but climbing broken steps would be too slow if they had to get away in a hurry. Too risky to light a fire, they huddled together on a mat. With a blanket wrapped around each of them, she listened as he began. 60
Sarah Dickson “Kalen was much younger then, and new to the Pasters. His initiation into the fold was to follow me on one of my trips to see what I was up to. I decided to have some fun with him, so let him steal one of my weapons. I still recall him grinning as he sped off in his aircar. I followed him until he decided to stop and pitch camp. After he’d settled in for the night, I shot his aircar in the open plains, causing it to catch fire.” The smile broadened on his lips. “I sat down behind a large tree and observed how he would survive the remainder of the night. For good measure I simulated the sounds of some of the wild cats.” She tried to suppress her laughter. “How long ago was this?” “Five years. He was about fifteen, as I recall.” She swatted him lightly. “That’s cruel.” “A real cat appeared near dawn and Kalen screamed his head off. I was tempted to leave him, but I couldn’t. I would be instrumental in his death. It became too personal for me, so I waited. Fortunately the cat left.” “And if the cat had decided to attack Kalen. What would you have done?” His smile fled. “I’m not a cold blooded killer. I would have saved him.” Sandray was not so compassionate. If Kalen proved to be any risk at all to her, he’d be history. The chill of the night descended. “You got anything more on offer than this blanket?” He went to the aircar and returned with another. 61
Gateway His hand brushed her nipple as he handed the blanket to her. “Hmm.” “An accident. I swear it.” Her grin widened. “Are you sure?” “Snuggling yes, sex no. I mean it,” he said with little conviction in his voice. “I’m cold and need warming up.” He put his arm around her shoulder. No way was that going to be enough. Teasing her fingers under the drawstring of his pants, she quickly gripped his flaccid shaft. It stirred in her hand. Surely he’d not change his mind now. He lay on his back to give her greater access. Just as she thought. “You seem interested to me,” she said. Heat seared through her body as he brushed his hand against her breast. “You cold?” he said teasingly. “I’m going to warm us both up,” she murmured, squeezing his semi-erect cock to emphasize. “I’m getting warmer by the moment,” he said. “You lie there, and let me make you burn for me,” and felt his cock harden in her hand. He placed his hands behind his head and looked up at her, grinning. Moisture trickled between her legs. She’d wanted him to fuck her since he suckled her nipples in the rain. She could come in an instant if she weren’t careful. It was going to be hard to prolong it. She led his hand to the drawstring of her pants. He 62
Sarah Dickson slid fingers over her curls until he touched her mound, and began to stroke it. Shuddering at his touch, she said. “See?” He feigned surprise. “You are dying for me, aren’t you?” Suddenly he released her. “Show me how you seduce a man.” No man ever had ever asked her that before. “I—” His eyes gleamed. “Demonstrate in detail.” Her nipples went rock hard and another surge of moisture flooded between her legs. Esterol’s breathing became more rapid. He really was getting turned on. “Take your top off,” Sandray ordered. He sat up, gripped the cloth and pulled it over his head. Tossing it to one side, he gave his head a shake. His wavy blond hair cascaded over his broad shoulders. Muscles rippled across his chest. She wanted to lick each layer of that wonderful six-pack. “Your top.” “Uh-uh. You wanted to know how I work, right.” He closed his mouth. Sandray eased the hem of her top over her nipples. The cloth brushed them, causing her to throb with need. He gasped when she flung the garment to one side. She ran her fingers through her hair, sticking out her chest as she did so. Esterol’s gaze stayed riveted to her breasts. She cupped each breast, not too big, either and well-formed. Men just loved to watch her tease her nipples. Sandray teased one, causing a flood between 63
Gateway her legs. Licking her lips, she wetted a finger and proceeded to tease the other. Esterol gasped. The effect of his reaction was electric. Her nipples ached as she teased each in turn. “Will I go on?” He nodded. “Whatever happened next, you don’t move, or I’ll stop.” He licked his lips, barely suppressing a smile. “And men really do as you order?” “Absolutely.” Sandray stood, stepping to one side. Slowly she undid the drawstring, letting her pants fall just past her hips. Pausing briefly, she loosened it further. His gaze followed the waistband of her pants as they fell to her ankles. Looking at his generous erection through his pants, she lifted one leg out of hers and placed her foot beside his thigh. She widened her legs then knelt on top of him, with one knee on either side of his hips. The material of his pants brushed her thighs. “I’d best address that.” She untied his drawstring and tugged at his pants. He raised his hips to aid her. She slid his pants off and cast them to one side. “You still cold?” “I’m burning.” She placed the tip of his cock on her nether lips. “Watch me come for you.” Instead of lowering herself onto him, she moved back so his cock stood erect before her. 64
Sarah Dickson She widened her legs making him gasp as she exposed her cunt to him. Her fingers strayed to her clit. With slow up and down moments she slid over her mound, dipping occasionally into her passage. The contractions in her vagina sent shivers of delight over her body. Esterol gripped her thighs with his hands. His face was set in a grimace. Such restraint appeared to be unbearable for him. “This is extremely uncomfortable for me, but I’m sure as hell enjoying it. Keep going.” She continued with her thrusting fingers, in and out, again and again. The build came slowly. Her nipples ached and her body cried with the need to have him inside her. She was so close. Sandray had to stop or come over her hand. “Shit, Sandray, you’re torturing me.” Ah but to see his face in such desperation was worth the delicious agony she was feeling. “And you love it, right?” “Yes,” he said in a hoarse whisper. She lowered herself onto his engorged cock, feeling the walls of her vagina widen to accommodate him. She moved up and down slowly, enjoying the contractions as they grew stronger and stronger. “Faster,” he pleaded. Again she thrust in and out, desperately holding back the orgasm that threatened to overwhelm her. “Come for me, please.” “On your back.” She climbed off him and lay on the mat. She 65
Gateway widened her legs and invited his throbbing member into her. Esterol wasted no time with foreplay, he thrust in hard. She cried out on the first thrust and again on the second. Never had this felt so good. She just wanted him to keep going and going. Again and again he took her, hard and fast. “That’s it. Make me burn. Ohhhh. My.” Her hips thrust into his as she came again. “I can’t believe how hot you are,” Esterol said. Her skin was on fire. “You make me hot. Now make me burn.” She exploded on the next thrust. Esterol went rigid and a low groan escaped his lips. Slowly the hardness of his cock ebbed as he poured into her. He fell on top of her, panting. Ignoring his weight on her, she held him tight. No man ever made her feel as totally sated as Esterol did. She kissed his sweaty shoulder. A pity this would become a dim memory in a few days. Slowly he eased out of her. His dreamy gaze locked onto hers. “I could get used to this.” “So could I.” An uneasy silence passed between them. She hadn’t meant to admit how she felt, nor did it seemed, had he. He returned to his side of the mat, turning his back to her. Sandray lay on her back, looking up at the stars. So far away there were, remote and distant. She may as well be up with them. It was foolish to believe there was anything else between them. This was 66
Sarah Dickson recreational sex for a few days, nothing more. With that thought firmly placed in her head, she managed to fall into a dreamless sleep. **** Esterol awoke to the words that continued to echo in his head. What had he said used to this for? This was a convenient arrangement that would soon be over. He climbed out of the bed and went over to the aircar. The clouds had fled, leaving a thin mist to shroud a clear sky. “The tracker hasn’t detected the Pasters yet.” “Why give them the advantage? We should just go,” she said irritably. Esterol ignored her tone. Maybe it was for the best, this tension. It would make it easier to part when the time came. She packed her bag. Grabbing the blankets she folded them and placed one in each aircar. Picking up the comm, she said, “I’ll go onto long range to see where the Pasters are.” Esterol glanced at the screen. The ruin appeared as a black triangle in the middle. Three cars appeared near the edge. “How far away are they?” Sandray manipulated a switch, making the cars appear smaller. “About thirty miles.” A smile came to his lips. “It’s Kalen, all right. How fast are they traveling?” “The speed of their cars is about a hundred.” She 67
Gateway looked up, frowning. “How fast is yours?” “About eighty.” “Mine is about double. Damn. Why didn’t you tell me? I could have tried to fix it.” Was she serious? “You really can fix one?” “I know a lot of things, if you bothered to take the time to find out.” “Hey. Why are you so mad?” Stupid question. The tension eased across her shoulders. “Sorry. I should have asked you about the speed earlier on.” “It’s too late now. We should focus on what we’re up against. Are there any more Pasters further afield?” He was pretty sure Kyra would have sent all available resources to kill them. “Let’s see where they are,” Sandray said. He watched as the image on Sandray’s comm zoomed out. Four more aircars headed in from the left. “They’re about two hours away.” After zooming in again, Esterol noticed the three were closing in fast. “We better get moving.” Sandray placed the comm in her aircar. “What sort of weapons do they have?” “Sonic weapons, mostly.” “The Pasters use a satellite to fire their weapon? Are you serious?” He didn’t know the Pasters’ use of technology was so sophisticated. Until Sandray arrived, he didn’t even know an operational satellite existed. He began to wonder what the Pasters’ true agenda was. “You didn’t know, did you?” Sandray said, surprised. 68
Sarah Dickson He shook his head in disbelief. “Are you sure they use satellites?” “How else can a sonic weapon work? Don’t worry. I can match whatever frequency is being used then jam the signal.” Esterol had no idea what she was talking about. “It will blow up their aircar,” she said impatiently. That he did understand. “Do it then. Blow the lot up.” “Before I do, I should give you these in case I miss one of them.” He watched her remove what looked like two small torches from her bag. Holding one up, she pointed to a lever on the side of the silver cylinder. “You push it forward for narrow beam, which has a range of about fifty yards. Push it back to get the widest setting and you have a torch, so be careful.” This was what she’d used on him when they’d met. “You could have killed me,” he said, annoyed. She eyed him levelly. “I obviously didn’t. Now take it.” Esterol placed his thumb on the lever and pushed it forward, then back. Heck. He wouldn’t want to get it wrong in a hurry. “We don’t have much time,” she said. “Give me a rifle.” He went back to his car and removed the weapon from his bag. Sandray took it from him and aimed. “What does it use?” Esterol removed a clip containing ten bullets, each 69
Gateway the size of his finger. Sandray loaded the rifle. “My only agenda is to see my father again, and no-one is going to get in our way.”

A
small explosion hit a nearby wall, leaving an echo in its wake. Sandray had underestimated the distance their rifles could shoot from. Reopening the comm, she checked the position of the closest aircar, about five miles away. She searched for any trace of a signal from the rifle, found it, and matched the frequency. She pressed the send key. A rumble in the distance followed. Two to go. Sandray scrambled to her feet. Another explosion rocked the building. Bits of stone flew past her. Sandray caught the signal, matched the frequency and pressed send again. Nothing happened. Shit. They must have jammed the signal. What technology did these guys have? Definitely in a similar league to what she was familiar with. These guys weren’t a simple anti-technology group. Their agenda had to run far far deeper. As tempting as it was to remain at the ruined building, a direct hit by a sonic rifle could shatter what remained of the aging structure. Getting out looked like a good idea. Sandray climbed into the 71
Gateway aircar and followed Esterol, already one step ahead of her, to the nearest copse of trees. She caught the glint of two remaining aircars as they appeared near the building. Esterol took aim. “I’ll take the left one.” Sandray grabbed the rifle and aimed. The crosshairs brought the right aircar so close it appeared to be almost on top of her. She fired. The aircar jerked to one side, before it righted itself. Shit, they were quick. “We’ll fire on the one aircar together, and hope we hit it,” Esterol said. He counted. “Three, two, one. Now.” The aircar, this time, flipped over. She heard the wrenching of metal, followed by an explosion. A ball of flame rolled skywards. One to go, but it was approaching way too fast. “I’m going behind another tree,” Esterol said. “Stay here and wait for my signal.” It never came. A flash of light blinded her. She heard a whoosh, then a surge of heat as it rammed into her chest. She fell out of the aircar. Sudden pain tore throughout her right side. She tried to move and the pain flared again. She looked down and saw a dark pool of blood form between her breasts and waist. Sandray touched wet flesh through her burned top, and winced at the acrid smell emanating from her body. I’ve been burned real bad this time. 72
Sarah Dickson Suppressing the need to gag she tried to move. Pain seared through her. She was dead unless Esterol found her. She listened, but, nothing. Where are you, Esterol? A shadow loomed over her. She looked up. Kalen. Where the hell is my laser? “Not so tough now, are you?” Kalen fell to his knees beside her. He stank as bad as ever. “Kyra thinks you’re a problem to us. One I plan to eliminate.” “What are you going to do?” she said in a not-sosteady voice. He unsheathed a knife. She wanted to retch as the incident in the street returned; a nightmare she had tried to forget. Kalen lifted the cloth around her wound, making her wince. “It looks nasty.” His gaze lowered to below her waist. “What I care about looks pretty good.” She tried to control the rising nausea. You can get out of this, you’ve done so before. He sat on her thighs, making it impossible for her to kick him. If she were fit and unhurt, she may have had a chance. She gritted her teeth, and with an effort, thrust her body upwards and to one side. He swung over and fell to the ground. She lifted her knees up and tried to sit. Warmth flooded her side. I’m going to bleed to death. It would be preferable to being raped by this asshole. Kalen scrambled to his feet. He knelt on her knees, 73
Gateway pinning her. It hurt, a lot. He began to cut away her pants. “I’ll have to be more careful.” Slowly he cut the material, strip by strip, from her lower body. “You have to look at it from my point of view. You killed most of my men. Damn impressive. A pity your partner’s dead.” Her only sliver of hope died. Kalen undid the drawstring of her pants. When done, he lifted the cloth free. She was totally naked down below. No. “You said something?” She shook her head. “Women tell me about Esterol. He likes sex a lot. Want it to be a two way thing, don’t we?” She spat, narrowly missing his face. “Never with you.” “That’s a shame. I’ll still enjoy it.” She tried to move again, but Kalen leaned forward and held the knife to her throat. “You look comfy to me. You just rest nice and easy. I may fix the wound later if you’re good.” He unhitched his pants, and they fell to his knees. She refused to look below his waist. “Open your legs up.” She refused. “I’ll cut you.” “I’d rather be dead than be taken by you,” she growled. He seemed offended. He rose and let his pants fall to the ground. His erection was puny, as was he. Part 74
Sarah Dickson of her watched in fascination, as if the observer. He put the knife aside. “I’ll risk it,” he said, grinning. “Go on, try to fight me.” She struggled as Kalen hoisted her legs around his waist. Her hand scrambled to find the knife, anything. Dizziness threatened to over take her. Hopefully she’d pass out first. Hopefully, she’d die. A shadow came from behind him. She squeezed her eyes shut then re-opened them to make sure he wasn’t an aberration. Thank the gods. Esterol. “Your dick is as puny as you are,” she said to Kalen. A hand grabbed Kalen’s hair, followed by a fist to his face. Esterol dragged the now limp body from her, dropping Kalen as if discarding clothes. Esterol kicked him in the stomach for good measure. A low moan escaped his lips. “Good. He’s alive. I have a few questions to ask him.” She drew her legs together. “Why did you wait?” He sat beside her, relief in his eyes. “I didn’t. I ended up with my aircar nearly on top of me and it took time to slide out of the way. Mind you, your comment about his appendage was impressive, and accurate.” She raised her right hand to touch the wound on his head. Her side reacted as if it were scoured by a branding iron. Blood flowed from her lip where she bit it. He cradled her hand. “It’s not all my blood.” As he 75
Gateway removed her hand, his gaze fell to her wound. “Wait here.” He returned with a swath of bandages. He cut away the fabric around the wound. She winced as he did so. “It looks like a deep burn.” He let out a long audible breath. “Nothing you’ll die from soon.” Esterol lifted her left arm and began to cut away the remainder of her top. It seemed to take forever. The movement of the sun told her otherwise. After he placed bandages over her wound he said, “Sit up. I’ll need to tie this together.” After he tied a strap around her chest, he helped her stand. Everything went into a spin. Gripping her under the arms, he aided her to the aircar. With an effort, she climbed in. Esterol grabbed a blanket from behind her and draped it over her shoulders. “It will have to do until we’re out of here,” he said gently. She gripped it tight around her. It would do for now. Her gaze returned to Kalen who was beginning to stir. “What do you plan to do with him?” “Just you wait and see.” Esterol shoved Kalen to the nearest tree. Grabbing a rope from his aircar he tied Kalen to the trunk. When done, he sat beside Kalen whose eyes darted between the two of them. Esterol caressed the quivering man’s cheek like some concerned lover. “You truly expect me to believe you weren’t going to kill her? I mean, what is your interest in Sandray? 76
Sarah Dickson Is it only to stop the reopening the gateway, or is there more?” “The gateway, asshole,” Kalen said. “Not good enough,” Esterol said softly. He stood up, stepped back and using Sandray’s laser, fired near Kalen’s cheek, narrowly missing him. Splinters of wood cut his face, causing small areas to bleed. Kalen yelped. Sandray gave a smile of satisfaction. Let the bastard see what it like being on the receiving end. He cupped Kalen’s chin and twisted his head towards Sandray. “Maybe you want to tell her the truth. If you do, I may let you go.” He sputtered. “You must die. Those are my orders.” “Its not a hard question, really. I want to know why you want her dead,” Esterol said. Kalen’s head tilted against the tree, his forehead dripping with sweat. “It started when we followed that old man, Calron. He really believed he could reopen the gateway. His behavior seemed too erratic to Kyra so she let him go. Only after we intercepted a signal near the station did we realize we’d made a mistake.” He glared at Sandray. “Calron was cunning, but we had time to hunt you down. It’s at least three days to the Illumination from here and our aircars are faster than yours.” Esterol glanced at his aircar. “Not anymore. I’m taking yours.” 77
Gateway “Hers is too slow. We’ll catch up,” Kalen said smugly. Sandray didn’t let him think otherwise. Esterol wasn’t finished. “You planned to kill her, rather than consider what the opportunities may be?” “We don’t want the gateway re-opened. That’s all I’m going to tell you.” “You Pasters are a piss-poor minority and always have been. You are also a fool. It’s an insult for me to kill you.” Kalen looked up with a sneer. “Kalen,” she whispered, “If I wasn’t so wounded I’d kill you now.” He smirked at her. She leaned over to her bag to get her laser. And nearly passed out. So much for that idea. “Did you think she’d get you out of this? Sandray’s no weakling. In fact, she took two of your aircars out.” “Yeah and four more are coming. They should be here real soon. You should stick around.” Esterol rose. “We don’t plan on staying.” “I want to get closer.” She had an urge to hurt him as he did her. “Uh-uh,” Esterol said. “You can see fine from there. Besides, you aren’t well enough.” He was right, but all the same she was going to give it a go. All she needed was a laser. “I’ll finish him here right now.” Kalen and Esterol both looked at her, surprised. “Give me a laser,” she demanded. 78
Sarah Dickson Esterol handed his to her. “Its one thing to kill anonymous faces in self defense. To take the life of another in cold blood is another thing entirely.” Kalen’s sneer grew. “Unless you want to fuck me first?” She opened the laser and fired. Only her pain messed up the aim. A branch just above his head crackled and fell beside him. Kalen’s body jerked. Fear crossed his face. “Now you know what it feels like, don’t you?” Sandray said with deadly calm. Esterol’s trembling hand covered hers. “If you do this, I could not endure being near you.” “If I weren’t wounded, he’d be dead,” she said harshly. His gaze furious, Esterol grabbed a knife from the ground, took aim and flung it, hard. It landed with a thwack a yard above Kalen’s head. “We’ll see you later.” “He’ll come after me again,” Sandray said, lowering her laser. “I know but I can’t watch another being shot in cold blood.” He started the aircars and they moved out. “I promise we will meet again,” Kalen yelled. It didn’t stop her from the absolute conviction that if she were alone with Kalen, she would not hesitate in killing him. Not even Esterol would stop her next time. She shuddered at the certainly of her conviction. Pain overtook her senses and the scene around her began to fade. Darkness came, and she welcomed it. 79
Gateway
**** When she opened her eyes again, it was nearly dark. Looking around, the landscape had totally changed. They were following a river with a forest on one side and desert on the other. She was glad she didn’t have to concentrate, even simply looking around brought the pain back with a vengeance. The memory of what Kalen had nearly done returned to her. She leaned over the side of the aircar and threw up. Her heaving stomach aggravated the pain. After wiping her mouth, she saw light in the distance. He’s not here now, she reassured herself. Her aircar began to slow down in sync with Esterol’s. Ahead, she saw a hotel near the fringe of a township. Esterol passed the entrance and they went around the back. He moved her aircar next to his, and then lowered them together. She forced her legs to move as Esterol helped her from the aircar. “It’s not too far now,” he said softly. Each step was the equivalent to being punched in the chest. She felt warmth on her chest. “I need a physician,” she murmured. “I know,” Esterol said as the door slammed behind them. She looked down a dimly lit corroder. At the other end, a tall fair-haired man leaned against the bench. Concern filled his face. “What happened to the both 80
Sarah Dickson of you, Esterol?” Esterol smiled wanly. “Sandray, this is Lotin. She needs a physician.” He nodded sharply. “Pasters?” “Three.” “She took out two, but got hit by crossfire.” He gave Sandray an appreciative gaze. “I’m impressed.” Sandray grunted. She wasn’t in the mood for praise. Lotin handed Esterol a key. “Go up. I’ll send the physician to your room.” The climb up the stairs was agonizingly slow. The room blurred and the bed came as a blessed relief.

sterol sat on the end of the bed, watching Sandray. A feeling alien to him tore at his heart. He didn’t want to let her out of his sight and he knew it wasn’t just to get her to the Illumination alive, either. This ran deeper. Thoughts filled his head, the dangerous kind that hinted at commitment. Did he want a companion by his side? He tried to imagine if she’d died today. He didn’t know what he would have done if she had. He placed his hand on her forehead. Her skin wasn’t hot and her breathing remained steady, the only indicator she wasn’t suffering from a fever, yet. She’s safe and will soon be well. He rose and went to the bathroom. His head throbbed. Hopefully his wound didn’t look as bad as it felt. Looking in the mirror, he desperately needed a wash. His hair was caked with blood and dirt, as were his clothes. Whatever he could wash away, he’d do it now. After removing his clothes, he turned on the shower, letting the water fall onto the tiled floor. Blood and dirt mixed with water poured down a 82
Sarah Dickson nearby drain. After the initial sting had passed, he let the water cascade over his head. He scrubbed his hair, accidentally brushing the gash. He cursed. Rather than make things worse, he turned off the water, grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his waist. Looking in the mirror, the gash looked nowhere as bad as he feared, even though it had begun to bleed again. He heard a knock on the door. That was quick. He opened it. A dark skinned woman, about twice his age, eyed him up and down covetously. “I suppose you aren’t the patient?” Her perfumed scent wafted over him. Esterol would have normally leant forward, cupped her chin and kissed her. She was beautiful in an exotic way, like Sandray. Esterol placed his hand against his head. “It’s a minor gash. I’ll live.” The physician teased his hair apart to get a better look. “It’s not too bad.” Her finger strayed to his cheek. “I have a gel I can put on later.” Esterol stood to one side and let her in. “My companion is wounded.” She retracted her hand. “So Lotin said.” She twisted her generous lower lip. “Remove the blanket.” Esterol drew it from Sandray’s upper torso. The physician sat on the bed and removed the bandages one by one. Sandray cried out on the first, 83
Gateway settling into a whimper by the end. Esterol swallowed at the sight of a large red welt, coagulated with dirt. “It’s pretty deep and messy,” the physician concluded. Esterol was used to seeing many wounds. The one on Sandray made him burn with anger. A knot tightened and took hold. He’d kill every last one of the Pasters for this. Why didn’t you start with Kalen, a tiny voice in his head said. Too late now. “She was shot with a high level sonic rifle,” the physician said. “She’s lucky it grazed her side.” “A graze? Are you kidding?” “I’ve seen worse, and people have lived. I can treat her here.” The physician removed a large jar of what looked like a blue gel. After removing the lid, she poured the liquid over the wound. “Aaaaah,” Sandray said softly. “That feels like heaven.” “This gel will draw out any dirt and stop infection. When it dries, leave it for a day before you remove it. If the wound still looks messy, apply another layer.” She handed the jar to Esterol. “Don’t do anything too strenuous in the meantime.” “I plan to sleep,” Sandray murmured. “Your turn,” the physician said to Esterol. The cooling gel soothed the pain in his scalp to a dull ache. What incredible stuff. 84
Sarah Dickson Her hands took a little longer than what was really necessary. When done, she said, “You should leave this on until tomorrow night, preferably the next day. Your wound should be healed by then.” The physician removed a flask of clear liquid. “If you can get me a glass, I’ll pour some of this in it so she can get some sleep.” Esterol cradled Sandray in his arms to help her swallow the liquid. When done, he placed the glass on a bedside table. Sandray leaned back and he covered her with a blanket. “What do you want in payment?” She licked her lip. “I suppose you aren’t for the taking?” “Er, sorry. Sandray’s my companion.” She raised an eyebrow. “You mean literally?” Her gaze roved over his bare chest, then back to his face. “Pity. Where will you be married?” “Illumination,” he said, vaguely contemplating the possibility. “Didn’t think you were the type to get married.” He wasn’t, yet he couldn’t imagine Sandray not being in his life. The physician placed her hand over his. “Lotin told me both of you killed several Pasters. That’s payment enough for me.” At the door she said, “The gel will be waterproof by morning. She could do with a wash.” He removed his towel and snuggled beside Sandray in the bed. She felt so right, curved into his 85
Gateway body. Marriage, he wondered with a smile. The physician had a lot of nerve. He stroked Sandray’s matted hair. Was it such a stupid idea? They were good together, in bed and out of it. He’d think about it seriously another time. Right now, he needed sleep. **** Light drifted across his face, waking him. He yawned. Another night’s sleep and hopefully they’d be able to continue. He leaned over and checked Sandray. She looked much better. Color had returned to her face. Teasing the blanket down, he checked the bandage. The gel felt rubbery between his fingers. He snuggled closer, careful not to press against the bandage. He cupped one breast, tweaking a nipple. What am I doing? She needs rest. Her hand slowly cupped his. “Not now,” she murmured. He chuckled. “Maybe later.” “Hmm,” she said, before falling asleep again. He dressed in traveling clothes and went downstairs. Lotin opened a door opposite. “Breakfast?” Esterol’s stomach protested at being neglected. He was starving. “Yes.” Lotin left the room, returning a moment later. “My mother’s arranging it now.” The walls of the simply furnished room were decorated with pictures. One in particular reminded 86
Sarah Dickson him of Sandray’s homeworld. Dappled in a deep red hue, the sand seemed to be carved by the very wind itself. Some of the more remote areas of Kagistan were desert and also the best place to find artifacts. He always felt a haunting beauty when he traveled there. Sandray never mentioned such beauty in the world she’d fled from. A shout from outside drew him back to reality. Looking through the curtained window, he saw a street vendor pass, pulling a cart full of cloth. Lotin sat opposite. “How is Sandray? That’s her name, right?” Esterol nodded. “She’s much better. Thanks for finding a physician so quickly.” “She lives here as a permanent guest.” Esterol didn’t want to go into the details of their arrangement. Lotin usually provided women he slept with free board at the hotel. At least it explained why she was so quick in arriving. “What happened, exactly?” Esterol didn’t want to endanger his friend’s life. “Best if you don’t know too much.” The door opened. A plump, dark-haired woman entered, carrying a tray of bacon, eggs and coffee. She gave him a brief smile. “Your companion is doing better?” “My mother,” Lotin said. “Esterol. And thank you, yes, she is.” She patted Lotin’s shoulder. “I’ll leave you both to 87
Gateway it.” The smell made his mouth water. After devouring a mouthful he said. “We were followed from Landon. Sandray is...well, different, and the Pasters think she’s a danger to the status quo.” “You mean the gateway?” Esterol nodded. “She could aid us.” Lotin whistled low. “Best if I don’t know anymore.” “The Pasters made good their threat, and attacked us. We took all of them out save Kalen. I let him go.” “Why?” Lotin said, looking at Esterol as if he were mad. “I couldn’t kill him,” he said softly. Lotin shook his head. “That will cost you one day. There will be other Pasters who will find and hunt her down, and you since you’re associated with her.” “Four more, to be precise.” That he knew of, at least. “Since they don’t know you’re here, you should be safe until you both leave. Unless you go out of course. I suggest you don’t.” Lotin sipped more coffee. “As for Sandray. That’s interesting. You’ve never gone out of your way to risk your skin for another. Is she more than a casual encounter?” Trust Lotin to get curious. Occasionally he picked up some of the women he abandoned. “She’s off limits,” Esterol said. His eyes widened in surprise. “Don’t tell me you’ve succumbed to becoming a one woman man.” Esterol looked at the food then back to Lotin, who 88
Sarah Dickson was smiling. “What sort of question is that?” “It’s an interesting change.” Was he so obvious he wanted to protect her? And what if he was? What was the point of denying it? Hell, he even contemplated marriage last night. Just tired, that was all. Esterol tapped his fingers. “Can we stay here until Sandray’s fit enough to leave?” “Sure. Where are you heading to?” Lotin said. “The Illumination.” He shook his head in amazement. “It’s full of religious nutters.” “Many people go there for festival,” Esterol corrected. “Her father lives there.” He glanced upwards. “And you’re just taking her there? That’s definitely unlike you.” “It’s to do with the gateway.” His eyes were sharp and assessing. “Are you saying she can reopen it?” Esterol nodded. “Or her father.” “Whew. I’d even risk my life to get her there alive. You need any weapons?” Esterol shook his head. “We have everything we need. Oh. There is one more thing.” “Name it.” “Can you buy a dress and some traveling clothes for Sandray? She’s about the same size as your physician.” “That’s easy. I’ll get it done today and have them delivered to your room.” Esterol removed a gold coin. “This should cover 89
Gateway it.” Lotin took it. “I’d best go and see how she is,” Esterol said, rising from the chair. Lotin nodded thoughtfully. “I hope she succeeds.” A smile formed on his lips. “It would be an incredible slap in the face for the Pasters. I’d like to be there to see it.” “Thanks, Lotin, but it would be safer if you stayed here.” He rose. “The Pasters don’t scare me. Now, I better get my day in order.” He extended his hand to Esterol, who took it. “If we don’t meet again before you leave, good luck.” **** Sandray awoke to an empty bed. She looked around, unsure where she was for a moment. A hotel room, quite roomy as well. The entire incident threatened to return and haunt her. If only he had let me kill Kalen. She tried to sit up, and winced. The door opened. Esterol’s smile was a very welcome sight indeed. Everything felt right again. “How long was I out for?” He sat beside the bed and brushed back her matted hair. “Just the night. The physician suggested I wash you, or do you want some food first?” Sandray breathed in, recalling the stink from Kalen, and his closeness. She felt so dirty. “I need to 90
Sarah Dickson wash.” Esterol helped her sit. The sheet fell from her body. Save for the gel, she was naked. “I don’t look too enticing now, do I?” He grinned. “You do to me.” A tiny rivulet of anticipation raced through her. She was looking forward to being pampered. In the bathroom, she glanced in mirror. A filthy face with matted hair looked back at her. She looked worse that she felt. It was then she noticed the pain had receded. Sandray touched the gel. What amazing stuff. “How long does it take to work?” “One more application should set you right.” That fast. Esterol removed his clothes and turned the water on. She stepped under the shower and closed her eyes. She didn’t want a droplet of that disgusting memory to linger. Gentle hands rubbed her hair. She leaned into Esterol, enjoying the luxury of being pampered. Slowly he moved in a circle, his hands working in gentle caresses over her body. She savored the tingling sensation of each touch. His erection pressed hard up against her butt. Eyes still closed, she extended one arm back and with her finger, stroked his shaft. “Not now,” he said teasingly, swatting her hand away. She wiped the water from her eyes, and opened them. Steam filled the room. 91
Gateway His hands slid around her waist, and traveled up to her breasts. Fingers gently tweaked her nipples, sending pure delight throughout her body. She pressed into him, not quite sure how they were going to continue this with her injury. Her mind raced with possibilities. He pulled her back under the shower, forcing her to close her eyes again. “I’m not done,” he said huskily. He sponged her legs, starting with the outer thigh and working down to her foot. His touch made her shiver with wanting. He did the other leg. “Not much left to go except for one place. Open your legs, just a little.” She widened them; glad the flooring wasn’t slippery. He made little kisses down her back until he reached the curve of her butt. She tilted her head back, feeling the water cascade over her face. Suddenly he released her. “Keep your eyes closed.” She sensed movement, then a tongue as he teased her nipple. She squirmed as the tip of erection rubbed her mound. He released her, leaving her desperate. “Esterol. Back, here. Now.” “Uh-uh. You’ll have to wait and see.” His tongue traveled to her other nipple, and his fingers slid between her legs. “Hmm,” she said. “I’d like more than this.” His tongue lapped up the water between her breasts then returned to each nipple in turn. She arched back, careful not to twist too much. The water suddenly stopped running. She opened 92
Sarah Dickson her eyes. It was so steamy in here she could hardly see him. Two fingers slid into her moist passage. He added in a third and began to thrust in earnest. Sandray tilted her hips towards his hand so he could go deeper. His mouth descended on her nipple, sucking hard, then gentle. A flame of heat shot straight to her core. She sagged into his body. “Oh. That feels so good.” He went in and out slowly, sucking her nipples in rhythm with his thrusting fingers. Wave of delicious wave built into a tide that grew higher and higher. The build increased until she was about to explode. He thrust one last time. She convulsed. A sharp stab of pain from her wound dampened her orgasm. She gave a protesting groan as he removed his fingers. “I’m hurting you.” “I want more.” “As you command.” He thrust his fingers back in and out. Another delicious wave coursed over her body, dampening the pain. She gripped his hand, stopping him from continuing. “I want more, but not like this.” He pressed his cock between her thighs. “Let’s get you dry first.” She wanted to writhe beneath him, wet skin against skin, but the gel was not going to make that feasible. She tucked the fantasy away for now. He wiped her quickly with a towel, rubbing her hair last. Fingers strayed to her pubic hair. A finger 93
Gateway teased a little deeper. “You’re dripping.” “No foreplay. Just fuck me.” His eyes were on fire. “I’ll take you from behind if you can manage it.” She’d make sure she could. Sandray turned to her good side on the bed and Esterol climbed in behind her. “Stay there and I’ll do all the work,” he said huskily. He molded himself into her body, giving a low groan as he went in full. He gripped her waist and went in even deeper. She moaned. Her whole body was on fire and he the rain. She buried herself in him, taking everything he gave. Never had she wanted any man as much as Esterol. He moved out then thrust back in, slow and steady. She gasped. This was more like it. He whispered in her ear. “If you want me to continue this way…” “Yes.” He continued in even strokes. “Are you sure?” “I am not a fragile vase. Be a little harder with me.” He kneaded her nipples, increasing the pace. “Whatever you desire.” She broke into laughter. He pushed her forward, gripped her waist and pushed in deep. A sudden shock of pleasure tore through her. She arched her back, ignoring the pain. “Please... don’t.” “Stop,” he said hoarsely. She groaned. “Yes.” 94
Sarah Dickson “I can go some time like this,” he said, his voice low. She felt the first wave in the distance, a soft ripple. “Let it go,” he said. She did. It was exquisite. A feeling of some place she had not reached before touched her. A fire burned within, not the intensity of a quick need to be satiated, but a lingering flame that increased until it consumed her whole body. He kissed her back. His breath became more rapid, as did hers. She could feel her climax starting to curl agonizingly up her spine. It was exquisite agony and she luxuriated in it. She writhed. A steady grip on her thighs stilled her. She wanted to shout, but pushed a fist against her mouth instead. He nipped her shoulder, and groaned. She arched and froze. Orgasm slammed hard in violent ecstasy. She shouted into the pillow. Esterol thrust harder and faster, grinding into her. She squeezed him. He arched then cried out. She felt his seed flood into her body, causing her to shudder again. Aftershock ran over her body, coupled with tiny pulses as he continued to ebb into her. She craned her neck to face him. “Thank you,” she whispered. He gave her small kisses from between her shoulder blades, stopping at her lips. “Anytime.”

andray woke up what seemed a moment later. The light outside told her otherwise. It was nearing dusk. Esterol was still asleep, his back exposed to her and his hair draped over the pillow. Picking up a strand, she teased it between her fingers. He was fast becoming a fixture in her life. One she didn’t want to let go. Removing his hair from her fingers, her thoughts turned to her father. What had happened since he contacted her? To hell with the Pasters, she had to find out. Turning on the comm, she saw a message less than a day old. Her hopes soared. It meant he was still ok. She exhaled fast. Before she had a chance to change her mind, or get an earful from Esterol, she slipped out of the bed. Donning a robe, she went to the other room. Her father’s face on the screen made her stomach tighten. He looked haggard. “Sandray. I’ve been worried sick about you. Where are you?” 96
Sarah Dickson I’m in some town about two days ride from the Illumination. He frowned. “Something’s happened to you. Tell me.” It was almost impossible to hide anything from him. “We were followed by the Pasters and I was shot at, but I’m ok now.” His face went pale. “I underestimated the danger to you. Maybe I should have made you more aware. Maybe I should have waited in Landon for you.” She heard footsteps. “Too late now,” Esterol said from behind her. Surprise, then annoyance, crossed her father’s face. “Who the... Oh. Esterol.” No way had he been forgiven for sending her father on his way. “I’d like to know before I’m shot as well, what you are really up to,” Esterol demanded. “I’m planning to re-open the gateway so I can be as far away from Reiah as possible.” His face brightened. “In fact, we’re almost ready to go ahead.” Esterol seemed stunned by the admission. “You really believe you can?” Sandray knew her father would find a way. He persevered until he got it to work. “I’d be a lot happier if you were here, Sandray, just in case anything goes wrong,” her father said. “Like what,” she said, worried. “If you are being traced, it would be better if I explain after you’ve arrived.” “Can you aid us at all?” Esterol asked. 97
Gateway He turned his head to what Sandray suspected was another person just out of view. After a nod or two he said to Sandray. “The monks here don’t like violence, so you’re on your own. The good news is no weapons are allowed once you’ve arrived at the city.” “I best go. Take care,” Sandray said. “And you too.” The screen went blank. Esterol placed his hand over hers. “I’m sorry I didn’t believe him.” “You reserved your judgment and gave him food.” “I abandoned him.” “You didn’t abandon me.” “No I didn’t, did I. In fact you’re going to have a lot of difficulty trying to get rid of me.” She stroked his cheek. “I don’t want to let you go.” Smiling, Esterol wandered over to the window. He opened it. Music started, indicating the beginning of the evening festivities. “It’s a risk going out with the Pasters about, but if we’re armed, we should be safe enough. Are you game?” Her wound didn’t hurt too much. “I’d like that, as long as you don’t make me dance.” He kissed her on the tip of her nose. “I promise.” She searched her bag for her laser. Damn. The one she had was back where—. She didn’t want to even think his name. “I found yours under the seat of your aircar,” he said, and handed it to her. She’d not be unprepared again. “Can you put this on my thigh?” He slipped the laser holster up her thigh, the laser 98
Sarah Dickson facing inwards. His hands lingered a little too long. Esterol looked up with a delightfully wicked grin. She playfully swatted his hand. “Later.” Esterol steered her from the room, his hand protectively around her shoulder. “I don’t plan to let you out of my sight.” His warmth felt good as she leaned into him. He smelt so clean, and familiar. She was definitely getting used to having him around. The streets were packed with people, dressed from the simplest tunic to brightly colored layered clothing. She breathed in a cocktail of perfumes as women passed them, making her heady. A group of men and women danced past, throwing white-petaled flowers over the crowd. Sandray grabbed one and smelt it. It appeared similar to the one she’d collected at the station. “What is it?” “It’s from the most popular tree in Kagistan, a ruya.” Sandray removed one from her hair, and let it flutter to the ground. The music became louder. What sounded like flutes, drums and a harp gave an oddly pleasant mix. She tracked the source to a small group. A young, dark skinned man smiled at her. Esterol drew her close, shaking his head. The man shrugged. Sandray liked the way he made sure she was off limits. They barely missed a group of dancers, spinning and gyrating to a man who was beating a drum. 99
Gateway “This way,” Esterol said, and they dove around a couple embracing. Her stomach growled at the aroma of beef sticks sizzling on a black plate at a nearby stall. “You must be starving?” Esterol said. That was an understatement. She grabbed the stick, teased a piece of meat off, and chewed it slowly. She licked her lips before removing another. “Keep doing that and I’ll find a wall somewhere and—” Sandray placed her palm on his chest. “You’ll just have to be good,” and proceeded to remove another piece in a slow and seductive manner. Several laser lights shot overhead. She spun around to get an overall look, freeing herself from Esterol as she did so. And promptly lost him. A hand touched her shoulder, causing her to jump. She was about to smile, except it wasn’t Esterol. A sharp prick touched her side. Shit. He had a knife. She fought down the need to throw up. Calm down, you can survive this, just as you did last time. You have a weapon now. Wait until you can use it. Kalen sipped a cup of steaming liquid. “Look grateful or you’re dead.” She kicked the side of his knee, and ran. Only when the pain returned with a vengeance did she curse herself for not taking the hot brew and tossing it in his face. Kalen caught her in the heavy crowd within a few 100
Sarah Dickson steps. “Esterol really is an overconfident and arrogant fool. I mean, look at you, in pain and barely able to move faster than a drunkard.” Sandray thought about grabbing her laser, but Kalen would be faster. She’d have to wait until he was very close to her. She shuddered at the thought as to how close. Her heart fluttered and it took all her effort to steady her breathing. Kalen slid an arm around her waist. He stank of sweat. “I remember where we were last time. This time we’ll finish it, and then I am going to kill you. Maybe I’ll do it at the same time.” Not if I get you first. A short man with cropped blond hair appeared from the crowd, sidling to her right. He grinned, but not as enthusiastically as Kalen. He might not like what Kalen was about to do, but would it be enough to stop him watching Kalen kill her? She didn’t want to bet on it. The crowd began to thin. Kalen slid his hand down her outer thigh, fortunately the one without the holster. Patience. Sandray had one chance to get the laser before he frisked her other thigh. Once he knew she carried a weapon, she’d be dead. She slid her hand between her legs, tying to fake her eagerness. It was almost impossible. “You want to watch, do you?” “No, bitch. I do, I don’t watch,” and shoved her 101
Gateway into a narrow dimly lit street. Just a little more. He shoved her against the wall. Under the cover of darkness, she grabbed the laser and cupped it in her hand. She’d take him here or die trying. Kalen grabbed her nipple and tweaked it hard, making her wince. “Oh, yes. We don’t care too much about that, do we? Open your legs.” Now. She fired the laser at point blank range. Everything went slow. He looked down, surprised at the sudden welling of blood over his abdomen. He stumbled backwards, before falling to the ground. A loud thud brought her to her senses. Time sped up again. The short man backed away. She aimed at his chest, her hand clenched over the trigger. He raised his hands in surrender, his eyes full of fear. She wavered. He ran. “Sandray,” someone yelled. Esterol. Sandray leaned against the wall and threw up. Gentle hands gripped her shoulders. Heart pounding so hard, riding on endorphins, she looked up. The look in terror in Esterol’s eyes stilled her breath. He embraced her, not caring about the blood that grew cold and tacky against her body. “I nearly lost you again,” he whispered. She ran on overdrive. “He’s dead now, isn’t he?” 102
Sarah Dickson “Yes. I wished... Oh, Sandray. I was a fool to let him go.” He held her gently while tears streamed down her face. The aftershock kicked in like a blow to the stomach. With shaking hands, she leaned on him for support. Wiping her cheeks she looked up at him. “Let’s get out of here.” He drew her tight to him, and she avoided gazing at Kalen’s body. Only when they’d returned to the busy street, did she feel any sense of normality returned. A few passersby gave furtive glances before they moved quickly on. Sandray averted their gaze, focusing only on the ground. Eventually they reached the steps to the hotel. The foyer, thankfully, deserted. Back in their room, she heard running water. “Get under,” Esterol said. Clothes and all, Sandray stood under the shower. The water was a purification of a taint she had endured since sighting Kalen for the first time. An ugliness gone from her life for good. A sense of relief took over as subtle as the water that flowed over her head. Esterol removed her dress and dropped it to the floor. Rivulets of blood flowed from it as a red stream into the drain. He ran his hands through her hair in gentle circular movements. He cupped her face, kissed her cheeks, her chin and finally her lips. A surge like a dam broke through, a barrier she 103
Gateway didn’t know existed. His pale lashes closed and reopened, fixing intently on whatever part of her face he kissed next. Fingers worked down her front, removing the remaining blood from her body. The water felt good, as did his gentle hands. She looked down occasionally until the reddening water had gone. There was so much blood. He kissed her neck while stroking her back. “Love me, please.” He shook his head. “Don’t ask me to.” In gentle circular movements, she stroked his taut torso. His hand caught hers. “No.” She leaned into him. “Please.” He turned the water off, turned around and cradled her in his arms. She had never been so scared in her life. Esterol released her, patted her body in equal slowness with the towel, taking care near where the gel bandage was. When done, he said, “You don’t look too bad now.” **** Esterol looked down at Sandray on the bed. Love me, please. Had he heard her right? “Say it again.” “What?” “What you said before in the bathroom.” She blushed. “I said love me.” The way she asked was totally different as well. Not the domineering woman who wanted a quick 104
Sarah Dickson fuck but to be loved. It shook him. He climbed into the bed beside her, and stroked her cheek. He’d been worried sick when she’d been nearly raped by Kalen. When she’d disappeared, he panicked. With no idea where she had gone, he ran from street to street like a madman. It was only by chance he saw them. He was becoming aware of how much she meant to him, and also how useless he had been at protecting her. As if she knew what he was thinking, she said, “It’s not your fault. Kalen took the opportunity offered. If it wasn’t the street, it would have been elsewhere.” She trembled. “He’s dead now.” Her face was so beautiful he wanted to kiss her all over. “Stay with me.” “I plan to,” she said softly. “If you want me.” “I do, right now in fact.” He kissed her gently on the neck. He wanted to make love to her, desperately. “And if there are any more Pasters, I promise not to hesitate again,” he said between kisses. She rolled onto her back, sending a surge of desire to his groin. His fingers strayed over her neck then down to her nipple, pausing at the gel. He removed his hand quickly. “I have to change this dressing.” She arched her breasts towards him. “Then hurry up.” Carefully, he peeled off the gel. She winced as he worked. Her hand cupped his, aiding him in removing the last of it. He placed the gel on a nearby table. Her wound, now a pale skin color, looked 105
Gateway almost healed. She craned her head up to see. “Can I get a closer look?” “You’ll need a mirror.” “So find me one,” she said, huskily. The gleam in her eye made him groan. Why did she have to look at him look at him like that? “No.” And knew he didn’t mean it. He grabbed the jar, determined not to succumb. She stayed his hand. “No point in wasting it if it’s nearly healed, is there?” She had a point. He ran his hand through his hair and his fingers snagged gel. He prized it loose. “Can I have a look at the graze on your head?” He leaned over, not thinking for a moment what she was plotting. Her arms slid around his. Careful not to touch her chest, he lay beside her. She kissed him, tenderly, not with the hunger he expected. It was a relief. He didn’t want another exhaustive bout of sex, regardless of what his cock was thinking. Her hand strayed to his growing erection. “Sandray. I—” “Sssh,” she said. His lips found hers and his fingers strayed to her clit. The moistness was incredible. She was burning. “Just lie there, I’ll do it.” She let go of his cock. He teased her mound and she gave little whimpers. She parted her legs for him. “It won’t take 106
Sarah Dickson long, I promise.” That he could believe. She shuddered at the slightest touch. With one thumb on her mound, he thrust a finger into her passage. It was like touching liquid fire. His cock hardened fast, making him gasp. “Esterol,” she whispered. “Please.” He leaned on his elbows, eased her legs further apart and slid in. Fire burned up his cock and radiated into his body. He pulled out, knowing one more thrust and he’d be over the edge. He leaned over, kissed her hungry lips and thrust in again. She cried out his name again and again, tightening her legs around him as she shuddered beneath him. She gripped his cock so hard, he convulsed. He felt as if were about to explode. From one glorious moment to the next, his very essence poured into her. He devoured the bliss that followed. Sandray’s closed eyes and steady breathing indicated she had fallen asleep. A faint trace of a smile remained on her lips. He rolled off her. Maybe it was love that drove him to such intensity. The word thundered in his head. Was it possible he was falling in love? Heck, he’d considered marriage only last night. Maybe he was. If so, there wasn’t a lot he could do about it.

ust on dawn, they reached the base of the mountain, shrouded in a light mist. They managed to cut the time using Kalen’s aircar, but it still took half a day and most of the following night. She’d led part of the way, but by nightfall Esterol had insisted on taking over for the remainder. Stopping only when absolutely necessary had taken its toll on him. He looked exhausted. Safety was almost within their grasp. The Pasters were nowhere to be seen, making her suspect they were planning on an ambush either on the road up to, or inside the city of the Illumination. The fact that weapons weren’t allowed in the city meant nothing to her. Smuggling arms was easy, even past sophisticated equipment meant to detect it. The road itself was a surprise, barely a track cut into a steep cliff face. It meant aircars couldn’t travel beyond single file. It also meant the Pasters would be hard pressed to ambush them here. That gave her some comfort. She turned on her comm to check. There were no other vehicles. She turned it off again. 108
Sarah Dickson As they ascended the forest thickened, casting the track in shadows. Sandray rarely encountered mist, except on winter mornings and never with trees. With trees, the whole effect felt eerie. The light didn’t seem to grow any stronger, which meant the mist was thick. With no feeling of any change in light, time seemed to drag on by. “Not long now,” he reassured her. Her burn also itched again. Maybe she had been too impulsive in not using the remainder of the gel. She’d dare not tell Esterol. It would mean a delay, one she wasn’t prepared to risk. Soon the trees thinned and the track appeared to head straight into the cliff. They stopped at a black wall, similar to the material of Esterol’s stovetop. “This is a depot for cars,” he said. Part of the wall moved, revealing an entrance. They hovered into a softly lit tunnel that seemed to extend as far as they eye could see. “We go to the end,” Esterol said. “Welcome to the Illumination,” a male voice said. “May your visit to our midsummer festival be enlightening. A few things we do ask of you are: no weapons, no violence and no stealing. For those who stray from these three requirements, you will find a speedy departure minus your aircar and any goods. Should you wish for further information, use the festival option of your information pad at any of the major hotels.” Silence returned to the tunnel. It was a recording. 109
Gateway At the end of the tunnel, another door slid open, revealing a long room full of aircars. “Please park your vehicles in the next available space. Any weapons must remain with the vehicle. Our security will ensure they remain safe until your return,” the voice said. No way was she going in unarmed. “Where’s the security scanner?” “At the exit. You’ll see it soon enough.” Sandray slung her bag over her shoulder. Ahead, a door remained closed as they approached. Bracing herself for whatever screening existed, she waited. Only when the door opened and they exited via stairs into the mist again, did she relax. Rubbing her arms she said. “It’s certainly cooler here. Wait.” She removed the comm from her bag. “Ten thousand feet. No wonder I’m cold.” “Turn it off,” Esterol said. “There are cameras around.” She did so. They followed a path, the only thing she could see. Ahead, the filtered light brightened. “We get some morning mist across the desert, but nothing like this. There’s a wonderful eeriness about this place,” Sandray said. “That’s how I felt when I saw the Illumination for the first time. I never tire of it.” The mist briefly cleared. Sandray looked above. Spires from black-walled buildings seemed to go on forever. 110
Sarah Dickson “It’s amazing,” she said. “Everywhere else, these buildings were cut apart for material. Here, you see the original city of Kagistan and what other cities must have looked like, once.” Although impressed with the grandeur, she preferred the simpler style of Landon. This, while magnificent, held a certain air of pretentiousness. The mist closed in again. They stopped at a gate within a wall. It opened, and a frail looking man in a black hooded robe walked towards them. “He’s a monk,” Esterol whispered. She caught a glimpse of his eyes under the hood. They were black orbs. His face was lined and he looked about a hundred, if not more. His hands briefly touched Sandray’s. She felt a tingling sensation run up her arms and concentrate on her burn. The monk released her, and the sensation went away. “You’re healing well, but need assistance to be completely whole.” How did he know? The monk ushered them in and the gate closed behind them. “My name is Talos. I have been expecting you. Follow me.” Esterol took her hand and they followed. Smaller buildings appeared out of the light mist, their colors standing out against the taller black buildings that appeared further in the distance. Their structure was boxlike and all the windows looked the same. The only thing that gave away any sense of 111
Gateway individuality was the division of color from one building to another. Sandray glanced at the number of people who passed them on the narrow streets. Various skin colors, clothing and even the way they behaved in public. Some observed their surroundings in open wonder while others appeared to be in a hurry. Such diversity didn’t exist in Reiah. This was indeed an incredible place. “Don’t stare so openly. “Esterol warned. Sandray kept her gaze forward. “I’ve never seen so much diversity. It’s hard not to be amazed.” Talos paused. His dark eyes rotated like orbs she wanted to swim in. “Your father is looking forward to seeing you. He’s succeeded in aiding us.” She tried to keep her excitement down. “The Mind,” she whispered. The monk nodded. “We have waited far too long for this day. Your father is indeed going to aid us in becoming the new Mind.” “He’s really going through with it?” Esterol said, intrigued. “How?” Sandray asked, recalling the word danger from the last conversation she had with her father. Talos stared so long at Sandray it made her uncomfortable. “I will heal you completely, and then you may visit your father. He can explain to you what will occur.” “What do you plan to do with her?” Esterol asked, concerned. “I promise she will not be harmed. You can 112
Sarah Dickson accompany me if you wish.” “Try to stop me,” Esterol said. **** They meandered through streets until the number of people they passed fell to a trickle. Esterol had no idea where they were going. He’d never ventured to this part of the city on previous visits, and no wonder. The buildings were tall, even dilapidated looking. Shutters covered windows and the doors were painted in colors long faded. Talos paused at the front of a windowless building with a faded blue door. Initially Esterol thought he was having a rest. The monk tapped the door once with his staff. It opened with a hiss. The building looked deserted, yet it didn’t smell of disuse. The green mosaic floors and high ceilings reminded Esterol of an ancient hospital. Perhaps it was, since Talos had commented on her wound. At the end of a corridor, another door hissed open. Inside, the room was bare save for a small tank of blue gel, and a nearby table covered with a sheet. Sandray dipped her finger in the gel. “It looks similar to what the physician used.” “It’s the same,” Talos said. “Now, Sandray, will you remove any clothing near the burn?” She removed her top, leaving her breasts exposed. Esterol had to remember Talos was a monk, and old. Hardly competition. 113
Gateway Sandray climbed onto the table. The skin had reddened considerably since the last time he’d looked at it. Why had she hidden it from him? “Why didn’t you tell me it was getting worse?” She lay down. “I didn’t want to bother you. It’s fine, truly.” There wasn’t a lot he could do about it now, but watch. Talos applied the gel onto her wound with a large syringe. Where it touched her skin, the gel hardened into a transparent covering. Sandray wiggled. “It tickles.” The monk placed his hand over hers. “Don’t touch it.” Esterol thoughts wandered. He wanted to do more than touch her breasts. Sandray’s nipples hardened before his eyes. “Esterol. Don’t make this harder than it is.” Bad choice of words, but he didn’t dare reply. “Why is my father suitable for this transfer?” Sandray asked Talos. Talos’s eyes seemed to go distant. “We have searched for two centuries to find a genius to take on this task. Your father has the most incredible mind.” “Such flattery would have certainly appeased his ego,” Sandray said. Esterol was still digesting what Talos had said. “Did you say two centuries?” “Yes. I am that old.” “How?” Esterol asked, intrigued. “The energy of the Mind keeps us alive. You’ll 114
Sarah Dickson experience it soon enough.” “Is the transfer a danger to him?” Sandray asked. “There is a risk, yes, which is why he insisted you arrive first.” Sandray propped herself on her elbows. Esterol wished she hadn’t. He leaned against the table to hide his growing arousal. “How much of a risk is there?” Sandray asked. “Calron needs to be willing when the transfer takes place. If he changes his mind partway through, he’ll lose it completely.” He placed his hand on Sandray’s bare shoulder forcing her to lie down again. “I’ll be there for him,” she said. “Where will this transfer take place?” Esterol said. Talos looked at Sandray. “As soon as you are well.” She frowned. “If father succeeds, will the gateway just re-open?” Talos gave a long pause before answering. “As simple as that, yes.” “I would like to visit some of these worlds. Is that possible?” Esterol asked. “If the transfer is successful, you can visit whatever world you desire.” Was he serious? “Just like that?” “Yes.” That meant someone could come through and bring others with him and attempt to take over Kagistan. He didn’t like it, not at all. “No controls as to who comes or goes?” 115
Gateway “We can hardly control millions.” No way should anything be opened until that particular problem was settled. “I think it’s healed. What do you think, Esterol?” Esterol glanced at her breasts, and wished he hadn’t. A bit of the gel remained on her breast. Talos grabbed a cloth to wipe it off. Esterol snatched it from him. “I’ll do that.” He wiped the excess gel from her breast, painfully aware of the growing bulge in his pants. When he was done, Sandray climbed off the table. “I’m ready for anything.” So am I, preferably in a bed somewhere. The monk tidied up the table while Sandray slipped on her top. “Let’s go to a hotel. Now,” Esterol murmured in her ear. “You need to sleep,” she reminded him. “I will, afterwards.” Talos waited at the entrance. Outside, it was getting dark and the mist had lifted. A young monk waited outside. “He will guide you to the Matichus hotel, where your father will be.” Talos gave them a brief nod and left. The crowds began to thicken. Nearby, restaurants were filling up with people. The scent of culinary delights wafted through the air. “See the building ahead of you? That is your hotel.” Esterol had visited the Matichus before, but he’d never stayed, preferring cheaper accommodation. If 116
Sarah Dickson the monks or his father were picking up the tab, who was he to knock the chance back. He craned his neck upwards. He could see people through the windows looking out to a view of the city lights. The monk turned around and faded into the darkness. The double glass doors hissed open. Just inside the foyer was her father. Shit. He looks pissed off with me. “Dad,” Sandray cried. Calron hugged Sandray. “Thank the gods you made it.” “You look much better,” she said. Esterol had to agree. His white hair was now tied back. His green robe looked new, certainly not the bedraggled clothes he’d worn when he’d arrived at Landon. Calron’s gaze went hard. “At least you made sure one of my family members arrived safely.” “I didn’t know, did I?” Esterol protested. “You don’t think beyond your own selfish agenda. You came here to see if you could trade on other worlds, right?” It had been his initial agenda, but Sandray was beginning to change all that. He wanted to spend more time with her, starting with a bed. “Yes I do, well, did.” Calron looked at him, surprised. He slid his arm around Sandray’s shoulders. “Things have changed.” 117
Gateway Calron grimaced. Damn man didn’t believe him. Sandray leaned into Esterol. “It’s true, Dad. We’re planning to see a lot of each other.” “Does that mean you won’t be coming with me?” Esterol didn’t like his annoyed tone. “In the short term, I’m afraid not.” “We’ll see,” Calron said softly. Esterol doubted it would be the last on the matter. Sandray looked around. “What a hotel!” Esterol had been in the foyer before, but it was a long time ago. Still, it was impressive. They stood in the centre of a large atrium. Glass elevators transported people to and from the upper levels in the hotel. Between the elevators were platforms to view the atrium from different aspects. Calron escorted them to the reception desk. “When you’re refreshed, meet me at the restaurant. It’s at the top level. Say an hour?” “An hour sounds good,” Esterol said as civilly as possible. Calron was not going to make things easy for him. A woman with long red hair smiled from behind the circular reception desk. “Welcome to Matichus,” she said. “One room?” Esterol nodded. “Level ten is one below the restaurant. You’ll find the view most spectacular.” She handed each a white card. “These are used to open the doors of your room. Is there anything else?” Esterol had only one thing on his mind. “No.” Inside the elevator, Esterol pinned her against the 118
Sarah Dickson railing. He slid his hands up her top. Boy, did her skin feel good. He reached the curve of her breasts. And paused. The walls on the elevator were made of glass. He looked out to the atrium. Several elevators were full of people and some were staring at him. He abruptly removed his hands. Sandray laughed. “There would have been one heck of an audience if you had kept that up.” He felt warmth on his face. “I can wait.” “Don’t be embarrassed,” she said. “I like the way you desire me so much.” The door opened at their level. An older woman wearing a flowing pink robe gave Esterol a slight smile before entering. They used a card to open the door to their room. Esterol closed it behind him and turned a light on. Aware people could see in he turned it off again, casting them into semi-gloom. Sandray nuzzled his neck. “This is such a new experience for me.” “What do you mean?” He felt hands slide down from his shoulders to his waist. “I’ve never been outside that awful fortress. Like a prison in many ways. Oh, Esterol, I’m so glad we’re here and I’ve found Dad again. He looked mad at you, though.” “He’s safe, and I did bring you here. Can we let it go for now?” She answered by untying the drawstring of his 119
Gateway pants. They fell to the floor. He stepped out of them. He slipped off his top, and fully naked, turned to face her. She looked to below his waist. Licking her lips, she said, “You do want me, don’t you?” His cock was throbbing. “That’s an understatement.” Removing her top, she said, “I have an idea. Wait here.” Her breasts bobbed as she dragged a table over to the window. Esterol eyes widened at what she planned to do. She leaned over it and propped herself on her elbows. “How about this?” His cock throbbed. “Only one problem. Your pants are still on.” She gave him a sly grin. “Take then off.” He gripped the pants and pulled them down. As she stepped out of them, she wiggled her butt. “Like the view?” He cupped her cheeks. “I like what I see, and, feel.” One hand strayed to her clit, just stopping short of her mound. Boy, was she wet. Esterol dipped into her slick centre and moistened his fingers. When done, he teased each of her nipples with her juices. She pushed her butt onto the tip of his cock. “That feels good, now rub me up.” Gripping her waist he pressed his cock between her thighs. The slickness of her juices on his shaft 120
Sarah Dickson made him squirm with a burning need that had to be sated. He pressed the tip of his cock against her moist centre and slid in full. “Oh,” he moaned. Staying immobile, he teased her mound up and down. Holding still was killing him but rather than fuck her senseless, he wanted her to come first. “What are you doing?” “Come for me, and then I’ll show you what I have for you.” “Esterol,” she said between tiny gasps. “This is maddening.” He withdrew, making her groan in frustration. “Be patient, my love,” he murmured. “We have an hour, why rush it.” Did he just say, my love? She craned her neck to face him, her face an expression of pure adoration. “Did I hear you right?” “Yes,” he said, stunned. “I’ve never said love to anyone before.” He withdrew and she turned around and hugged him. His lips found hers. To pleasure her senseless was what he wanted to do. He massaged her clit back and forward until his hand was dripping. “Esterol. I want you inside me.” “Lie with your back on the table,” he said between ragged breaths. She leaned back onto the hard surface. He spread her legs wide and dove into her clit with his tongue. 121
Gateway “Hey.” He pressed her thighs further apart, giving him free reign to lick and nibble on her throbbing clit. He felt the violent jolt as the first orgasm exploded through her. How wonderful she tasted. Esterol dove deeper with his tongue, loving the way her body responded to him. He sucked her mound hard. Her body arched and convulsed. Another cry escaped her. “Are you going to do this all night?” she said between gasps. “Uh huh,” he said, sending the vibration right up into her core. Her body froze before another shudder tore through her. “Stop,” she pleaded. He looked up. “Plead harder.” “I’m coming at your touch..” Returning to what he was doing, he plunged his tongue in deep. The taste of her was sending his cock so hard it began to hurt. He lifted his head to face her. “Will you scream when I come inside?” “Anything, just end this.” It was enough. He hoisted her legs around his waist. Her throbbing cunt was waiting for him just to dive in and fuck her senseless. As he slid inside her, his eyes rolled upwards. “Oh, my, that feels good.” Pulling her partly off the table, he cupped her buttocks and went in full. 122
Sarah Dickson Sandray cried out as he felt a deep orgasm flooding through her. “I can feel more inside you, wanting to be released.” Desperation filled her eyes. “I’m spent. I really am.” His hips moved back and forth in quick succession. He felt beads of sweat form over his torso. “Just one more time. Go on. I know it’s there.” Sandray’s face began to twist in that exquisite expression of pure bliss. Her hands gripped the edge of the table. The muscles in her passage tightened. This was going to be the mother of all orgasms. Esterol paused, shuddering as he came. Stars filled his vision. His member was throbbing so badly with spending his seed into her, he was sure it was going to wither up and die. She whimpered beneath him. “I don’t have the energy to do this again.” Exhaustion threatened to overwhelm him. “I may have to extend that condition until tomorrow.” She climbed off the table, her legs wobbly. “Thank you.” “For what?” “For coming into my life.” She kissed him. “My love. Did you mean that?” He nodded. “Absolutely.” “Love. It’s a scary place to be but I’m prepared to risk it with you.” His heart felt as it was going to burst. “You feel the same.” 123
Gateway “I love you too. I’ve never said that to anyone before either.” He yawned. “I may have to renege on dinner.” “Sleep is a better option for you. Don’t worry. I’ll calm father down.” He was so tired, deliciously so, so much so he almost forgot to tell her. “Sandray. There’ll be something on the bed for you when you get out of the shower.”

he wondered what it was. She’d find out soon enough. The shower was pleasure enough as the running water blissfully cascaded over her body. Not like Esterol, who was heaven. He amazed her with his tenderness, and his unabashed desire for her. He’d offered her love and a place to call home. Her father would have to come to terms with her not going. Her decision meant he would soon be leaving her forever, and it saddened her. The lure to explore other worlds would prove to be too strong to resist. She would miss him terribly. Reluctantly she turned the tap off. After drying herself, she returned to the room. An emerald dress lay beside Esterol, who was leaning on his elbow. He definitely looked shattered. “Try it on.” She picked it up, wandered over to a mirror and placed it against her body. It was full length. Esterol must have acquired it at some stage, but when? She slipped it over her head, letting it fall to her ankles. The sleeves came to her wrists. She found a thin cord 125
Gateway to tighten at the waist. The material felt light, yet warm. She checked the neckline. It exposed the top of her breasts. It looked quite good on her. “Where did you get this?” “After that incident with Kalen, I asked Lotin to find some clothes for you.” “It’s lovely.” “I’d probably get a smaller size next time.” “It’s perfect as it is,” she said. Esterol lay back, yawning. “Don’t be late.” **** Sandray waited patiently for the elevator doors to open. Her father would no doubt give her an earful about Esterol as well. The door opened straight into a softly lit restaurant. Conversation was quiet, even though the tables were full. Most were eating. Those who did speak barely rose above a whisper. A pale skinned woman wearing a short black shirt and sleeveless top approached. “Do you have a reservation?” “Calron.” The waitress escorted her to a private room. She drew aside a curtain and Sandray entered. On two sides were windows, with a view that took Sandray’s breath away. A few city lights from smaller buildings, shadowed by the spires she had seen earlier. Beyond was nothing but the pale glow from the moon through the thin mist. 126
Sarah Dickson She eased herself into a rich velvet chair with a high back. Running her hand over the table, she said, “Such a beautiful piece of wood.” “Isn’t it decadent? What is precious in one world is so abundant in another. I still have trouble coming to terms with the differences between our worlds,” her father said. He grabbed the carafe of wine and filled two glasses. “What did Esterol tell you about me?” Direct as always. “He wasn’t sure about you, so he let you go. He regretted it later, if you must know.” “He had his reasons I suppose. The information I managed to collect from the station made no mention of Pasters or of their technological ability. Not as reliable as I hoped.” “The Pasters probably censored it so people like us would be caught.” “That’s what I concluded too.” He sipped more wine. “I know my grudge is unreasonable. I’d rather tell you than him, that’s all.” She held the glass. “He’s a good man, Dad.” He placed his glass down. “I know. And you’re free here too.” She nodded. Freedom, she could understand. Her father fixed his gaze onto her. “Hungry?” “Yes.” “I ordered some food already.” Her father rose and pressed a button next to the closed curtain. A waitress pushed a trolley into the room, setting it beside the table. Sandray look at what was on offer, a 127
Gateway combination of foods that were familiar and unfamiliar. One looked and smelt like curried fish and another plate had noodles. That looked good for a start. Serving up her plate, she asked. “What are you planning Dad? Talos said you were going to transfer your mind but it was dangerous. What exactly is involved?” “Tomorrow I go into a cave and the transfer is done.” Her chest tightened. It was all happening so fast. “If all goes well, it will take a while for everything to become operational again. I’ll be here a few months at least, doing research on each world connected to the gateway.” Relief flooded through her. She’d not lose him so soon after all. Placing her hand over his, she said, “I’m glad you’re staying.” “I thought you’d be pleased. Mind you, once the research period is over, I’ll be visiting each world in turn. I’ll come back here between visits to see if you’ve changed your mind.” “I might, as may Esterol. The idea of trade I’m sure will return to him once we’ve settled a bit.” He smiled warmly. “So you’re not lost to me.” “Ask me in a year’s time,” she said, not entirely sure why that particular time frame had entered her head. Her father grinned. “You’re on.” With enthusiasm, he scooped up vegetables and placed some onto a plate. “Come on, eat. The variety 128
Sarah Dickson of food is unbelievable.” His enthusiasm never ceased to amaze her. She placed more fish and noodles on her plate. The smell was making her mouth water. Between one morsel and the next she asked, “What you have done since you’ve arrived?” “I’ve spent most of my time with Talos, working out if my mind is compatible. Once we discovered it was, I did some preliminary research of worlds I might like to visit. And…” He raised his fork. “You’ll like this bit. If I don’t find a nice quiet world to live in, the monks are happy to have me stay here.” He dug into more food. “Mmm. This meat is heavenly. Try some.” Sandray was quite happy with what she had. “Go on. Tell me more.” His expression went grim. “There are other things to consider, such as security. If anyone took control of the gateway on Kagistan, they could control traffic to and from every world.” A more personal danger loomed. “If Reiah decides to invade Kagistan, we will be hunted down.” Her father nodded. “You can bet on it.” Her stomach threatened to flip. “How do we make sure no one ever does?” “The crystal you took at the station in Landon stops the gateway being re-activated here, right?” She knew where this was going. “It means no one will ever be able to come or leave Kagistan.” “Unreasonable for two reasons. Firstly, the Pasters will never let us be if we leave things as they are. 129
Gateway Secondly, is it fair we stop people on Kagistan ever returning to their ancestral homes just because we don’t want to be followed from Reiah.” She caught her breath. Heart racing, she said, “We have to go back and get the crystal from Reiah.” He nodded. “Not we. I.” She’d return to whom later. There were other logistical problems with the idea. “How do you plan to do that? If you go back, there’s no way of being able to leave again.” He bit into another mouthful of food. “There is actually, if the transfer is a success.” She paused in twirling the noodles on her plate with a fork. “There’s another gateway on Reiah?” He shook his head. “No. We make one.” “That’s impossible. No one can create a miniature gateway.” “The Mind can create a short window which will enable me to return.” “Only if the transfer is a success.” He nodded gravely. “If I fail, it will not matter. You’ll be safe here.” She placed her fork down, her appetite gone. “I wanted to tell you this now, in case things don’t go well tomorrow.” Sandray swallowed, trying to suppress a sob. He may be dead tomorrow. He retrieved a slice of meat from another plate. “I assume you still have the crystal?” How did he manage to stay so calm? “It’s in my room.” 130
Sarah Dickson “Good. Don’t lose it.” “When do I meet you?” “Talos will arrange a guide for you. Make sure you’re in the foyer at ten.” He really was going to go through with it. As if reading her mind, he said, “Would you do anything different?” Had she been in his place? No. “I’d risk anything to keep my freedom.” “I knew you’d understand. I’m not sure Esterol would. In fact it would be best to keep him out of this.” “I don’t think I can.” His eyes narrowed. “Is it serious?” “I’m afraid so.” He gazed at her tenderly. “You better tell him everything and bring him along as well.” Sandray pushed the plate away. “I may go, if that’s okay.” He didn’t move. “It’s a lot to take in. Get a good night’s rest. It’s a big day tomorrow.”

sterol stretched like a cat before he opened his eyes. Soft light filtered through the bedroom window. He extended his arm to be met by warm and very womanly flesh. He’d not heard her return. He slid his arm around her waist and nuzzled her neck. Breathing in her scent, Sandray smelt of a spicy flower. Probably the soap she used. She snuggled into him. He ran a finger slowly down the curve of her spine, over her waist until he reached the folds of her labia. He imagined bringing her to climax as she awoke. Sandray turned onto her back and her hand clamped over his. “No.” He rested his hand on her stomach. “What’s wrong?” “Normally I’d be more than willing, but it’s—” The mischievous glint wasn’t there at all. She really wanted him to leave her alone, which meant something happened last night with her father. “What happened?” She curled her lower lip. “Dad's going through with the transfer today and wants us to be with him.” 132
Sarah Dickson Us. He doubted Calron wanted him there. “I insisted you be present,” she said. There was more to this, and she seemed reluctant to continue. He sat, touching her shoulder. She was trembling. “He may die.” Esterol could see how much she cared for her father. His own parents didn’t approve of his wanderings and things had been frosty ever since. They wanted him to settle down, have children. He’d never considered the possibility. Until now. Sandray climbed out of bed and began to dress. The mists were thick, making any guess as to the time of day, difficult. He checked the clock on the table beside him. It was nearing nine-thirty. “What time are we leaving?” “Ten.” He climbed out of bed as well. “Where are we meeting your father?” “A monk will be waiting downstairs.” She rummaged through her bag beside the bed and removed a laser. “Take this, just in case.” He took it. “And you?” “I’ll take my bag.” **** Talos waited in the foyer. His dark eyes barely hid his excitement. “Your father is being prepared.” The quiet streets, exaggerated by the mist, 133
Gateway disorientated Esterol and he quickly lost where they were going. Only when the monk paused at the building with the faded blue door, did Esterol recognise where they were. The same place Sandray had her wound attended to. Esterol passed the door to the room where Sandray was healed. Ahead, looked like a dead end. Talos raised his staff and a wall slid open to reveal a large elevator. The air suddenly became charged with a pink haze. Sandray rubbed her chest, smiling awkwardly. Esterol sensed the shift in the energy as well. His nipples were also tingling. “What is that energy?” Esterol asked, acutely aware of his cock stirring. “This is what powers the Mind.” “The energy of the Mind,” Esterol said. Seems to make one as horny as hell. “You mentioned it keeps you younger. What will it do to us?” Sandray asked. “It can affect different people in different ways. Each time this happens to me, I become at least twenty years younger.” “So that’s how you’ve lived for two centuries,” Esterol said, amazed. Talos smiled warmly. “Occasionally we power up the crystals to extend our lives, yes.” “We won’t grow younger?” Sandray asked, worried. “It seems to affect aging bodies more. Your father may come out of this younger. You will not.” 134
Sarah Dickson “Does he know?” “Calron’s looking forward to it.” That was going to be weird, seeing Calron, as a younger man, Esterol thought. Sandray chuckled nervously. Esterol could guess why. Her father would have to survive the transformation first. The elevator slowed, and the energy faded, much to Esterol’s relief. The door opened into a cavern, deep under the mountain. The black floor reflected subdued light from the ceiling. Consoles lined the walls. Several monks were huddled around one in particular. “What are they doing, exactly?” she asked. “They look after the house of the Mind.” Esterol had no idea what that entailed, and wasn’t sure he wanted to ask. All he saw was a technology that could fall into the wrong hands. “How secure is this place? I mean, what stops people simply coming in and taking over.” Talos leaned against his staff. “No one but the monks have access to the elevator, or to the Mind.” He touched Esterol’s hands. A gentle current of energy shot up his arms. “This is what’s needed to access this level. We are born with this energy inside us, and when we die, it fades.” “Born with it. Amazing,” Sandray said. Talos spun around as if getting his bearings. “Enough. Let me show you.” He led them to the centre of the cave, where a gold circular base rested. On top was a crystalline structure 135
Gateway that looked like a miniature pulsating pink garden. “The Mind is powered by the energy deep within the planet. You can’t see the actual workings. It’s underneath the gold casement.” Talos brushed his hand over a series of crystals in turn. The walls of the cave lit up with an incandescent pink glow. A set of gridlines formed in mid-air above them. To see the imagery on the door of his hut was one thing. To see the layout for real was entirely different. The stuff of legends would soon become reality. A sense of anticipation filled him. Maybe he should consider trade possibilities at a later stage. There would certainly be enough worlds to choose from. Talos raised his hand is a sweeping gesture. “What you see are pathways between worlds, their origin and destination. The Mind does not need to see this. It’s for the engineers to make sure everything is in order.” “I’m going to be part of that,” a voice said. Esterol spun around. Calron was dressed in a black robe. “Are we ready?” Talos nodded. “Lie here.” “One thing,” Sandray said. They all looked at her. “After a copy of your mind is taken, how do you know it worked?” “You will, believe me,” the monk assured him. “Say this works. What happens to the Mind when it becomes too old?” Sandray said. Talos shook his head. “Sadly, a catastrophic 136
Sarah Dickson accident occurs after two to three centuries. There’s not a lot we can do about it except monitor, then minimize the damage.” “Like what?” Sandray said, worried. “I’ll give you an example of what happened last time,” Talos said. “Two groups of passengers arrived at the same time at the station in Landon. Some of the bodies ended up inside others. We immediately shut down the gateway, stranding people in worlds such as Kagistan.” Esterol looked at Talos in disbelief. “You shut down the whole gateway over one incident?” “Not one but several mistakes occurred. From our records, the Mind made fifty before we shut it down. Thousands of lives were lost as a result.” “The price of leaving people homeless must not take precedence over the greater danger,” Calron said. He had a point, Esterol thought. Sandray bit her lip. “Take care.” Calron hugged her. “It must be done.” Releasing her, he continued. “Besides, I think my mind is a perfect candidate.” Esterol barely suppressed a smile. Modesty was not lost on this man. Talos cleared his throat. “I should mention three men and one woman arrived this morning. They weren’t here to join the festival or the sights.” He’d forgotten about them. “Pasters.” “I know the term. A collective of foolish youths who like to keep the order as it was. They were easy 137
Gateway to detect. Both weapons and vehicles have been detained. That doesn’t mean they’re not dangerous, so I suggest we don’t delay a moment longer.” Esterol recalled the lasers in Sandray’s bag. They were far deadlier than a torch. He had to assume the Pasters smuggled in some kind of weapons in as well. “Let’s get cracking,” Calron said. Talos pointed to the crystals. “Lie here.” **** Sandray looked at the bed of crystals. It didn’t look too comfortable. Pieces of crystal appeared to jut out everywhere. “How?” her father asked. “You’ll see.” Her father eased his body onto the crystals, which contoured to his body. Energy surged through her, nearly causing her to shudder in pleasure. Talk about a sex aid. “Sandray, this, um, energy is affecting me quite badly,” Esterol whispered in her ear. Moisture trickled down her legs. He wasn’t kidding. Poor Esterol wouldn’t be able to hide his arousal so easily. “If you become too hard, nuzzle against me,” she whispered in his ear. Esterol groaned. The light became a pink haze. Hands gripped her shoulders and a hard cock jutted into her butt. “If we were on our own I’d be inside you now.” 138
Sarah Dickson Why did he have to say that? Just the thought of fucking him was setting her on fire. She tried to focus on what was happening to her father who slowly disappeared inside the growing pink haze. Soon, she couldn’t see him at all. The crystals began to flicker. Her chest tightened. “Is there anything wrong?” A worried frown replaced the monk’s serene face. “He’s resisting.” “What can I do?” He indicated the floor. “Kneel here, and take his hand.” She slid her fingers into her father’s hand. It felt clammy. “Now what?” “Once you close your eyes and let you mind go, you’ll see a light. Don’t go too close, or your mind will be transferred as well.” Sandray closed her eyes and braced herself. Suddenly she was in a whirlwind of stars and galaxies. It was like being extremely drunk and having one’s head spinning out of control. Unlike the queasiness that usually followed, she felt incredibly alert. She saw a centre of white light begin to form and felt drawn to it. “No,” a voice warned. It sounded like her father. She tried to open her mouth when she realized she wasn’t here in body. She imagined the words. “What’s wrong?” His voice sounded strained. “Can’t you see it?” She only saw a wonderful light, drawing closer. 139
Gateway Colors began to form around the edges. “Leave me alone,” her father cried. The pain in his voice sounded awful. “What do you see?” “Her.” She had no idea who would disturb him so much. Unless… “Show me, Dad.” What felt like a veil draped over her head. The image changed to one all too familiar. Mother. Her mother was smiling, a smile Sandray once loved and trusted. Not any longer. “Traitor,” she said harshly. Her mother’s smile broadened to a grin of triumph, reminding her of the day her father was arrested and taken away. Since then she’d ceased to care about her mother at all. Not so her father. He appeared truly disturbed by her presence. Her father’s grip tightened. No way was she going to be defeated by her mother. “It’s a memory, not her. She no longer has any hold on us. Let her go.” “She hurt me more than you can imagine.” Sandray had been too young to really understand. “I can’t imagine what it was like but I do know this. If you don’t let her go, she’ll win. Are you going to give her the satisfaction?” His resolve began to strengthen. “You’re right. She’s nothing to me.” 140
Sarah Dickson It sounded hollow but at least he wasn’t fighting the vision anymore. “Do you want her to stop all those worlds from reopening?” She sensed his resolve strengthen with passing second. “She will not gain victory over me,” her father said. “Imagine her breaking into a thousand pieces and none of them can harm you.” She felt the struggle within him as he tried to visualize. “I’ll help you.” Imagining her mother shattered was harder than she expected. Her head began to ache, but she persisted. The presence of her father grew stronger as he too, imagined what she did. White light appeared between cracks in her face. It was working. Pain lanced Sandray’s eyes. “Help me.” “I’m here,” her father said. “Don’t stop now.” They were going to make it. Colors began to radiate from the centre of white light, obscuring her mother’s face. Soon it shattered into millions of colorful fragments. It was spectacular. Good riddance. She caught a glimpse of the Mind, and felt such a sense of oneness she didn’t want to return. “Go,” her father ordered. She didn’t want to. Another presence dragged her back. Talos. 141
Gateway The wonderful colors faced. She opened her eyes, aware she was on her back. The room seemed so ordinary by comparison to what she’d just experienced. She looked up to Esterol whose face was as white as a sheet. Talos brushed her forehead, and her headache disappeared. She barely noticed the gesture. Her gaze was fixed on Esterol. He helped her stand. “You passed out for half an hour.” “It felt like only moments.” “You’re back now,” Esterol said, hugging her. “Look,” Talos said. Her gaze followed his. What had happened to her father? They weren’t kidding about him becoming younger. He sat up in the bed of crystals, rubbing his arms. His hair was no longer grey. The lines of his face had faded. He looked rugged, handsome, in fact. “I feel terrific, thanks to you,” her father said. He frowned. “What’s wrong?” She heard a sharp intake of breath beside her. “They weren’t kidding about him becoming younger, were they?” Esterol said. Esterol strode to her father and hoisted him out from the bed of crystals. “Calron, you’re in for a shock.” If she had an older brother, it would be the spitting image of her father. Calron looked about forty-five. “Wow,” she said. 142
Sarah Dickson “The way you’re looking at me indicates you like what you see.” “You look great, Dad. Don’t you think, Esterol?” “How the heck would I know? He looks okay, I guess.” “Is there a mirror here?” Calron asked. Talos shook his head. “No. But if you wish to wait for the final diagnostic to be completed, we can determine if the transfer was a success. Then you can return to your hotel room and gaze into a mirror there.” They were here for the transfer, not a major beauty program, Sandray reminded herself. “Look up,” Talos said. Lines throbbed with life, an indicator of another connection forming. It looked like a spectacular laser show. The light in the cave grew brighter. The monks were looking upwards, their faces rapt. The centre flared into life. “It is done,” Talos said. Aware her mouth was open, Sandray closed it again. Never has she seen such a spectacle, all the more important as it meant the gateway had been reactivated. Her father gripped her hands. “Thank you for enabling to get rid of her for once and for all.” Sandray simply stared at him. His appearance was going to take some time to get used to. “Now what?” Esterol asked softly. Talos ushered them to the elevator. “Each world will be scanned to determine what changes have 143
Gateway occurred in the last two centuries. It will take several weeks if not months. I suggest you all use some of that time to enjoy the sights of the Illumination.” In effect, they were being thrown out.

sterol followed the young monk back to their hotel. He had not lost any of his horniness. Even when Sandray had lain unconscious, his ardor refused to dampen. Whatever energy existed in the cave, he was glad to be away from it. Not that its absence helped him now. Only one thing could, and Sandray seemed preoccupied. Who could blame her? If it were his father’s life he’d just saved, he’d feel the same. The walk back was agony. The only way he could keep any semblance of respectability was to keep Sandray very close to him. Who knew what she was thinking being prodded with his cock all the way back. Only after he’d shut the door of their hotel room did he release her. Sandray walked to the window, her back to him. “Do you have any idea of what the implications are going to be?” He willed his cock to settle, but it wasn’t listening. “Yes,” he said knowing it sounded curt, but an in depth discussion about the gateway was the last thing 145
Gateway on his mind. She spun around. “You were prepared for this eventuality. Think of those who aren’t. What will they think about the re-opening? Will they be able to handle what it means?” All good questions he would dearly like to discuss if his cock wasn’t so damn hard. “Sorry to be so blunt about it. I really need a good fuck.” She laughed. “You really were suffering on the way back, weren’t you? Do you want me to ease the tension?” He wanted to toss her on the bed and fuck her senseless, when he saw the bowl of red berries on the table. He had an idea. “Over here,” he said, indicating the sofa. “I want to feed you.” She placed her hands on her hips. “Oh, no.” He picked up a berry, placed it between his lips and with his tongue, swallowed it. “Can I persuade you to join me?” Licking her lips, she wandered over. “How do you plan to feed me?” He placed a pillow on one end of the sofa. “Strip and lie down.” With a wicked grin, she removed her dress and lay down. She raised her legs at an angle, just hiding her cunt. It took all his willpower not to dive between those soft folds. He grabbed two berries and placed them near her 146
Sarah Dickson nipples. Bending over, he lapped up both pieces, carefully avoiding the hard peaks each time. “Go on, feed me.” Leaning over, he grabbed another berry, and popped it into her mouth. He teased her nether lips with his cock. She was wet already. He groaned. Maybe this wasn’t a good idea. Raising an eyebrow, she said, “This form of foreplay not working for you?” Leaning forward, he grabbed another berry, and in doing so slipped at least an inch inside her. His cock was so sensitive that any movement at all was going to send him straight into orgasm. Sandray snatched the berry from him. “You look very distressed. Why don’t you come inside and I’ll relieve it for you?” He went in a bit deeper, clenching his teeth as her vagina contracted. She licked her lips. “I’ve got a good grip on you now. Just come. It’s okay.” Esterol didn’t want to use her like that. He lifted himself off her, unable to endure another contraction on his cock. “What are you doing?” she protested. “I can’t use you like this.” She widened her legs for him. “Get in here, now!” He moved backwards until he was near her knees. Widening her legs, his lips descended onto her nether lips. Hearing a satisfied groan, he began to suck her juices. The taste of her was sending him wild. She writhed beneath him. He dipped his tongue inside, 147
Gateway feeling the contractions of her vagina. Ignoring the tugging of her hands on his hair, he dived deeper. Only when she’d come would he give in to her. Between gasps, she said. “Imagine you inside me, right up to the hilt. I’m clenching you hard and you’re prolonging it.” His cock throbbed, unbearably. What was she doing to him? She continued. “You’re so hard it’s hurting. You know what to do about that.” He’d show her a thing or two about lasting the distance. He removed his tongue from her clit and his mouth descended on hers. He thrust two fingers up her passage. His tongue thrust with the beat of his fingers. She pressed her hips against his fingers, forcing them deeper inside. She groaned as he thrust harder and faster. The ache intensified in his cock as he endured the waiting. It would be worth it. He kissed her deeply and gently. Her passage contracted around his fingers. He heard her moan, felt her hands knead his buttocks. A searing wave of heat shot throughout her body onto his fingers. Esterol raised his head from her, unable to suppress the wicked grin he knew was on his face. Removing his hand, he poised the tip of his cock at the entry of her nether lips. She moaned. “Esterol, If you continue... oh, my.” She froze, convulsed, driving her straight into another orgasm. 148
Sarah Dickson “Plead,” he said, delighting in how he made her body mad for him. “Inside me, now!” His lips sealed hers and he entered her, hard. Her contractions gripped him like a vice. The build over his body was intense. She scratched his back, sending a brief shudder of desire through him. She lifted her legs higher. Her abandonment sent him to a level of desire he didn’t know existed. Sandray pushed against him and his cock touched the tip of her shuddering womb. He stopped. “No. Don’t—” Just a little longer. “Beg.” “Please.” Esterol groaned. This was killing him. “This is where you belong.” “And this is where I plan to stay. Now make me scream.” He went in full again, hard and fast. He couldn’t have stopped even if he wanted to. His body arched. The intensity was unbearable. I’m going to die, exploding into her. She bucked beneath him. “Esterol,” she screamed. He shuddered as another wave tore through his body. His head began to swim. Groaning one last time, he fell on top of her. His cock was so sensitive. Any movement at all sent another jolt through his body. 149
Gateway “That was what I needed,” he said. Sandray caressed his back. “I’m exhausted.” He leaned on his elbow. Sweat shimmered over her torso. She ran her hand along his arm to his throat. He leaned over and kissed her on the lips. She looked thoroughly sated. “Are you well sated now?” she asked demurely. “Yes.” She yawned. “That’s good, because I’m utterly exhausted.” He wanted to ask her about marriage, but hesitated. She did look like she was about to fall asleep. She stroked his chin. “Carry me to bed.” He climbed off the sofa and lifted her in his arms. “I’ve never met anyone like you, and doubt I will again.” Sandray chuckled. “Are you planning to keep me for a while?” To hell with it! His heart thudded. “Yes. Forever. I’m doomed, aren’t I?” Sandray cupped his chin. “As doomed as I am. You are beautiful, smart, and considerate when one gets to know you….” That’s true,” he interrupted. “One more thing.” She yawned. “What’s that?” Later, he reminded himself, when she’s awake. “Go to bed and I’ll help you sleep.” “No sex?” “I promise.” She lay on her stomach. 150
Sarah Dickson Gentle hands worked on tensed muscles. Her body eased into a blissful relaxed state. Esterol watched her steady breathing. Satisfied she was asleep, he closed the bedroom door. He leaned against it. He did love her, more than he believed possible. He moved away from the door. Unable to sleep, he sought out a way to sate his restlessness. He scouted the room, and found the information pad. He pressed Info. The wall opposite came to life. A pale skinned woman like the redhead in the foyer said, “To make your stay more enjoyable, please select one of the following options. History, Architecture, Artifacts, Food, Sex, Travel...” Esterol thought of sex, and decided he’d had enough of that particular recreation. He waited until Artifacts came back again then pressed the button. “Some of the original artifacts can be found in the Illumination museum. Entry times are nine a.m. to five p.m. For the location of all artifacts select Plan.” That sounded interesting. Esterol selected Plan. A crosshair appeared north of the hotel. He wrote the grid coordinates down and switched the unit off. Since it was early afternoon, checking out the location looked like a good way to pass the time. He picked up the comm, and decided to wait until he was away from the hotel before he turned it on. If the Pasters were about, they wouldn’t know where they were staying. Esterol stood outside the main doors of the hotel. 151
Gateway The mist had lifted, revealing a clear blue sky. Plenty of people were about, having had lunch most likely at one of the nearby cafes. The smell of waffles and other pastries filled the air, making his mouth water. He reached a quieter street and turned on the comm. He copied what Sandray did at the ruined stone building and ended up with an image of part of the city on the screen. He entered the coordinates written on the piece of paper and the crosshairs moved to the upper corner of the screen. He turned left into a wider street, then past a row of abandoned shops. Straight ahead, he saw a large building painted in deep blue enamel. Save the color, it looked like the front of the museum in question. Four pillars soared above, converging to a single point somewhere out of sight. The door slid open, presumably controlled by some detector overhead. Inside, the main entry area was devoid of dust, although it felt as if no one had been here in a long time. The air didn't hold any mustiness nor was there anything else in the room, save the tiny patterned stone walls and lead-lit windows that ran along the walls just above head-height. Light filtered through, creating movement of color onto the stone floor. He touched a door at one end. It stayed closed. It occurred to him the museum may no longer be open to the public. He was about to leave when he gazed at the comm. Did it open doors? Only one way to find out. He checked the buttons. One had a symbol that 152
Sarah Dickson looked a door on it. Was it that simple? He pressed it, aiming the comm towards the door. A red light flickered several times on the screen, and the door slid open. He grinned. Entering the dimly lit corridor, he heard the door hiss behind him. Hopefully it would let him out again. Pausing at the first door, he pressed the button again. The door opened. The room was empty. He tried three more before he got lucky. The room was full of clutter, sprawled over two large tables. On closer inspection it looked like jewelry. He rummaged through them. Some were rings made of gold. Other items were designed to wear through the hair. A few rings with gemstones could be of value, but he left them. Jewelry, he had to admit was not an item he bothered with. His buyers were more interested in parts for aircars and weapons. He was about to leave when a small box with gemstones caught his eye. Opening it, he discovered a ring, a simple red-gold band. He thought of Sandray. It would make the perfect wedding gift. He removed the ring from the box and pocketed it. After brushing the dust off his hands, he left.

hump thump. As she stirred, the knock on the door became louder. Who could it be? Not Esterol. He had an access card. Sandray slipped on a robe and went to the door. Careful to check who it was, she peered through the eyepiece. Dad. Doesn’t he look handsome. She opened the door. Hugging him, she said, “How do you feel?” “Initially I felt like I’d separated from myself. It’s passed, thank goodness.” She closed the door behind them. “You look terrific.” He smiled briefly. “I’ve been accosted so many times, it’s embarrassing. I’m sure I’ll appreciate the changes eventually.” “We should go out and cheer up you up,” she said. “I hoped you would say that. Maybe some female company will give me some respite,” he said, beaming. 154
Sarah Dickson Obviously the attention is not bothering him that much. “Give me a moment to get changed.” Back in her room, she slipped on the green dress Esterol gave her. After making sure her laser was in place, she slipped a shawl over her shoulders and left the room. Her father eyes were full of admiration. “The colour suits you. Is the shawl a gift from Esterol?” She nodded. “He has good taste.” He looked around. “Speaking of which, where is he?” “He went out. I don’t know where.” “I guess I’m going to have to get used to him being around,” he said with a hint of sadness. She swallowed. “There’s something I need to discuss with you.” Softness filled his eyes. “He’s touched your heart.” “He loves me. For him, that’s a big admission.” Her father smiled warmly. “I’m glad you found a man worthy of you.” Did she detect a hint of longing? “You’ve never found another woman since mother.” “I close celibacy after she left me,” he said bitterly. “It’s better than being betrayed again.” “Not all women are the same. You should allow another into your heart.” “Never assume anything when it comes to love. It’s a fickle road, and you never know what you’re going to get.” His bitterness wasn’t going to dampen the love she felt for Esterol. “It’s a risk I’m willing to take.” 155
Gateway “I suppose I really am travelling on my own.” She nodded. “I’m afraid so, for now at least. Esterol and I want to spent time together on Kagistan.” He appeared thoughtful. “Which brings me back to Reiah.” She’d not forgotten his intent of going alone. No way would she let him. “You said we had one chance at this. We must go together in case something goes wrong.” His eyes went hard. “No. And that’s my last word on the matter.” She let it go, for now. “When do you plan to go?” “You have the crystal you took from the station at Landon with you?” She nodded. “I’ll be going after you’ve reinstalled.” She wasn’t sure how it was relevant to his plans. “Why does that matter?” “I’ll need to leave from there.” A pang of sadness filled her heart for those who would be stranded on Reiah. Not all the people who lived there were bad. As if he knew what she was thinking, he said, “Don’t let guilt enter into this. There are too many on Reiah who are prepared to take over another world.” He was right, but it didn’t make her feel any better. “You got your laser.” She nodded.” “The Pasters are most likely lurking about.” “Will you recognise any of them?” “Two. Kyra, and a short man with a broken nose.” 156
Sarah Dickson Kalen’s companion. Forcing the bile to stay down her throat, she said, “I know him and Kyra. What about the other two?” “No idea.” Which meant it could be anyone out there. **** Outside the front of the hotel, Sandray spotted Esterol coming their way. “What have you been up to,” she asked, noticing the comm in his hand. “Just checking out the museum.” A museum meant artefacts. “Did you take anything?” she said half-jokingly. He widened his arms. “You can frisk me and check if you like.” He looked like he was telling the truth. “I believe you.” Esterol lowered his arms. “What are your plans now, Calron?” “Talos will soon be announcing we have succeeded. It’s going to become quite interesting around here.” Sandray didn’t know that. “Isn’t it premature?” “To thwart the Pasters, definitely not,” her father said. “I agree with Calron,” Esterol said. “The Pasters will give up the chase and the sooner the better.” Her father nodded. “That’s what I’m hoping.” Sandray wasn’t so sure. They could still kill out of 157
Gateway vengeance. Steering Sandray to her left, he pointed. “Look over there.” Talos stood on a raised platform, staff in hand. “I have an announcement to make.” Sandray followed Esterol and her father towards the hushed crowd. Talos continued, “Once we were united. Soon we will be again. Soon our isolation will end.” He paused and cleared his throat. “The gateway has been reopened.” “What nonsense is this?” someone yelled. “The Pasters will no longer have any reason to terrorise us,” another yelled. “They are a group of fools,” said another. Several in the crowd sniggered. “Who would like to return home?” Talos said. Silence. Sandray suspected the realization of the gateway being open was going to take some getting used to. “Who would not?” Talos said. “I know no other world,” one said. Many murmured in agreement. “Who is undecided?” Many muttered in the group. “Whatever your decision, should you be stopped from making your choice?” “No,” several shouted at once. “You lie,” a woman said. Sandray froze. It was Kyra, the Paster leader. “What do we do?” she asked Esterol. 158
Sarah Dickson Sandray saw a glint of light as Esterol removed a laser. “I see one of them. Time to lessen the odds.” Sandray followed his gaze. She didn’t recognize any familiar faces. As unobtrusively as possible, she removed her laser. All four of them would be here, watching them. Suddenly she felt vulnerable. Her father whispered to her, “I see the guy who shot me, on your left.” She saw him. The short man who’d fled after she killed Kalen. Sweat glistened down her father’s forehead. “I have a score to settle with him.” “I’ll deal with him,” she said. “Just keep close but not too close.” No way could she risk her father getting hurt. The short man was so intent on listening to Talos he didn’t even notice her approach. She shoved the tip of her laser into his side, making him jump. “This thing cuts a body in half.” He trembled. “I’m not who you think I am.” Yeah, right. “You would have watched me die.” He craned his head to see her. “You shot Kalen,” he said, horrified. “That’s me. I have a question for you. Would you have let me die?” He swallowed. “One dare not cross Kyra.” Just as she thought. To save his own skin, he’d watch her die, all right. “You’re a coward,” she said coolly. “No,” he croaked. 159
Gateway “Then tell her to back off.” “I can’t. She’ll kill me.” Disgusted, she wanted to shove him away from her, but he may prove useful as a shield once the crowd dispersed. Kyra looked her way, smiling. That didn’t bode well at all. “What are the Pastors really up to?” she asked him. “If the gateway’s open she’s already defeated. Why don’t you let me go and—” “There’s more to this than stopping the gateway. Tell me what it is and I may let you live.” The sound of clapping drew her attention back to the crowd. Talos raised his staff. Glancing in her direction, he smiled. He looked pleased with the way things had gone. He nodded once before he stepped down and disappeared into the crowd. The crowd began to drift apart, increasing her chances of getting shot again. Smelling the scent of fear on him, she drew the young man close to her. A man separated from the crowd and ran down a side street. Soon he was lost to the shadows of the afternoon sun. He must be the remaining Paster. Sandray moved backwards until she felt solid wall behind her. Forcing the man to remain in front of her, she looked around for Kyra. The Paster leader approached as if on a casual stroll. “Come any closer and he’s dead,” Sandray 160
Sarah Dickson warned. The man began to tremble. Kyra raised her hands. “I don’t have any weapons.” Close up, she got a good look at her adversary. Her pale blond hair was tied back and her emerald eyes seen to see right through her. Kyra could be quite beautiful if her face wasn’t so hard looking. “Kalen was doing as ordered,” Kyra said. She spotted her father approaching. Kyra glanced in his direction before her gaze returned to Sandray. She doesn’t recognize him. That could work in their favor. He touched her shoulder. “Hello,” her father said. “Remember me?” Kyra’s eyes widened in appreciation. “What happened to you?” So much for the element of surprise. “Nothing to concern yourself with,” he said. Kyra said to Sandray, “Let him go. This is between you and me.” No way was she going to fall for that line, not with Esterol still missing and the other Paster at large. Probably lurking in a side street right now, waiting for his chance. Her father sidled beside Sandray. He gave a sideways glance. He too, looked worried about how thinly populated the square was becoming. “You like others doing your dirty work, don’t you Kyra,” he said sarcastically. “All to no avail,” she said with mock sincerity. 161
Gateway Her father shrugged. “Leave us alone then. Go home and accept you’ve lost.” She shook her head. “You fool. Who knows what sort of people will arrive on Kagistan and the technology they will bring.” “You don’t seem to be afraid to use it at your convenience,” Sandray said. “Or is it because you want technological supremacy,” her father said. Kyra pursed her lip. Seemed her father hit the mark. You’ve made things very difficult for us,” Kyra said. “I suggest you take great care of your personal safety in the future.” This wasn’t going well at all. “Kyra. Why don’t you and your boys piss off?” “You are brave with a hostage in front of you. What do you plan to do with him?” “Let him go once you’re out of my sight.” “He’s of no consequence.” The young man surged forward, grabbing the material of Kyra’s dress. “You bitch.” Sandray slipped to one side. Her father backed away. Let the two of them fight this one out. A groan followed. A darkening stain filled the young man’s abdomen. She stabbed him. Sandray couldn’t believe how cold blooded Kyra could be. Her father raised his laser at the same time Sandray did. Kyra tossed her knife to the ground. “I’m unarmed 162
Sarah Dickson now.” “Go,” Sandray hissed. She ran towards the darkened street, the same one she’d seen the man disappear into. Her father looked at her, wide-eyed. “We’re too exposed.” He wasn’t kidding. Both ran towards the entrance of the hotel. Esterol reappeared from another street. He raised his hand partway in greeting. Kyra reappeared from the darkened street. “Nooooo,” Sandray cried. A red beam of light tore through the air in Esterol’s direction, striking him in the shoulder. He slowly fell to the ground. Sandray fired into the shadows. A shape jerked for an instant then fell to the ground. Was it Kyra or the man who’d fled earlier? “I’ll go and check,” her father said. Her heart caught in her throat as she knelt beside Esterol. Redness swelled around his shoulder. The laser fell from her hand, clattered onto the cobbled street. “No,” she whispered. A hand touched her shoulder, making her jump. It was Talos. “I waited nearby to see what would happen. I had no idea the Pasters would possess weapons. If I had, we would have intervened sooner.” She barely heard him. Esterol moaned. She leaned over. “It’s all right, my love.” He smiled wanly. “I got the other Paster.” 163
Gateway She forced a smile. “That’s good. You didn’t look too carefully coming back, did you?” His chest moved as he laughed. Wincing, he stopped. “Not a good idea.” “I’ve arranged a stretcher,” Talos said. Kneeling beside her, Talos placed his hand over Esterol’s wound. “It’s not as bad as it looks. Yours was worse, Sandray.” “Hear that,” she said jokingly. Esterol snorted. She was grateful. It could have been a lot worse. She had no idea what she would have done if he’d died. Esterol gripped her hand. He smiled briefly before passing out. Her father returned to her side. “It was one of the other Pasters. Not Kyra.” She cursed. “It doesn’t matter.” Her father knelt beside her. “How is he?” “He’ll be all right,” Talos assured him. Sandray held Esterol’s hand until the monks arrived with a stretcher. She helped lift Esterol onto it. “Come with us,” one of the monks said. Let them try to stop me. “I’m coming too,” her father said. It seemed to take an eternity to reach the healing room. The monks placed Esterol gently onto the metal table. A young monk cut away his top with a knife, leaving him naked from the waist up. 164
Sarah Dickson Esterol opened his eyes, turned his head. “You get her?” he whispered. She gripped her hand in his. “No, my love.” “Damn,” he said through gritted teeth. She imagined the wound must hurt like hell. It looked bad enough. The welt was deep red and blistering. At least he’s not going to die. “Esterol needs to have the gel applied and left to heal,” Talos said. “I suggest we take him to the recovery room below. The energies will speed up his healing.” Esterol’s eyes widened with worry. “I don’t think you are well enough to be aroused,” she whispered in his ear. He laughed, and then groaned. “Sorry,” she said. The young monk placed the gel in a large syringe. “Can I apply it to him?” Sandray said. Talos nodded. Esterol sighed as she applied the soothing gel over the wound. His eyes closed. As she finished, he fell back into oblivion. “Excellent,” Talos said. “The more sleep he gets the better.” The energy sizzled over her as Esterol was wheeled into the elevator. Sandray wasn’t anywhere as affected as last time. The recovery room was small and comfortable, as was the bed. Sandray dragged a chair to Esterol’s side. She would have to leave for Landon soon, and 165
Gateway there was no way she could tell him of her plans to go to Reiah. “Sandray,” her father said. “We best get going.” “Can you tell me what you’re planning?” He sat at the edge of the bed. “I’ve managed to connect to my Mind. Don’t ask how, I’m not sure the monks have figured it.” He removed a sliver of pink crystal from his ear. “I can communicate with the Mind via this.” It looked needle sharp to her. “Doesn’t it hurt?” “Not at all. I hear the Mind as clear as I hear you.” He slipped it back in. “I can alter the comm to bring me back to Landon after I’ve removed the crystal from the station in Reiah.” “How?” “I’ll explain later.” ”Ok but I’m coming with you to Landon.” “But no further.” She’d see about that. “I’d feel better if we left a comm with Esterol so he can communicate with me,” she said Her father removed his comm from his pocket and placed it beside Esterol. “I haven’t made the modifications yet so leave mine with him.” He rose. “We have to go to your hotel room.” She kissed Esterol’s lips. “I promise I’ll return as soon as possible.”

andray felt terrible leaving Esterol behind, but it was for the best. If she didn’t make it back, at least he would be safe. Who was she kidding? What if she failed? Adjusting her bag, she looked up at her father. They couldn’t afford to fail, which was why she was going to Reiah with him. Talos was ready. “Both of you, stand on the crystal bed.” Sandray worried they may break the crystals, but they moved as if by a will of their own to accommodate them. The pink haze enveloped them. Next moment they were back at the station in Landon. Her father stepped out of the haze after it died. “Give me the crystal. I’ll be back in a moment.” After handing it to him, she waited as he returned the crystal to the control room above. At least the gateway would remain operational here, in case they never returned from Reiah. Memories of her first arrival, returned. So much had changed since then. Hadn’t it been only a week? 167
Gateway It seemed forever had passed. She heard footsteps over the mosaic floor. Her father made adjustments on his comm. “How exactly is this going to work?” “I don’t have time to explain in detail, but the Mind altered this comm so when I take the crystal in Reiah, I can insert it in here,” indicating a small recess. “The comm will work like a miniature gateway. It’s important I’m under that ring in Reiah within five minutes of arriving there, or the comm won’t work.” Sandray looked to the black ring above. Outside the area of the ring, they couldn’t transport. “And if you’re not?” “The comm will destroy the crystal.” Sandray visualized the plan of the station in Reiah. The time to reach the console room and back took no more than two minutes. “Can’t you make it less?” “We can’t mess this up.” “The gateway station on Reiah will be watched,” Sandray reminded him. “If they are inside the station when I arrive, I’m dead anyway. Either way, I can’t leave the station operational.” “I’m coming with you, just in case something does happen.” “No.” “If you mess up, I’m in trouble anyway. We only have one shot at this.” He seemed to consider her logic. Slowly, he nodded. “You’re right. We can’t afford to fail.” 168
Sarah Dickson “Good. Can the Mind determine if anyone is at the station right now?” “According to the scan, not when we left the Illumination.” “What about the crystal in your head. Aren’t you in contact with... yourself?” He chuckled. “Of course, but I can only detect any movement in the station at Reiah, not outside.” “Great. Let’s get this over with.” He pressed a button on the comm, and the pink haze shimmered. The searing heat of the desert seemed to suck out the very moisture from her body. Argh. Had she acclimatized to Landon already? The station appeared empty. Outside it looked about late afternoon. “Come on,” he said. They ran up the steps the control centre. The heat became unbearable. How had she ever lived in a place like this? She kept a lookout from the console room while her father worked. He removed a crystal from the main unit and changed two others. She knew it reversed some sequence. “I have to do the same to the backup unit.” Sandray heard the unit slide out of the wall. Shadows cast across the station floor below. She’d suspected they’d not get out of this so easily. Even after they came into view, their faces remained in shadow. Who were they? “There are two of them and one’s got a rifle.” “I’m done,” her father said. “What did you say?” 169
Gateway Sandray removed the laser. “Two men. One is armed.” He gripped her arm. “Wait.” She did, second after agonizing second. Voices became clearer. She glanced out of the window again. The men were nowhere to be seen, which meant they were coming up here. If there was any damage to the console, they’d be stuck here. This revelation came to her father as well. “We surrender.” Was he mad? “No way.” “Listen. We get back down to the station, make sure we are under the ring and presto, in three minutes we are out of here.” “And if they come with us.” She smiled at the idea. “If they end up on Landon, there would be no reinforcements.” “Exactly.” Her father shoved the comm in the back of his pants before raising his hands. They reached the stairwell as the first man came into view. He was broad shouldered, and from the harsh lines on his face, not someone to mess with. His top was black, as were his pants. A blue earring hung from his right ear, his trademark as a bounty hunter. This wasn’t looking good at all. The rifle he pointed at them was state of the art. “Ok. Down here, right now.” Thank goodness the console would be safe. They soon reached the station proper. She checked her watch. Two and a half minutes to 170
Sarah Dickson go. Oddly, it felt too long. She hissed at the sight of the second man; her ex boss. What had she seen in him? A half head shorter than her, and a tad overweight. He was also ten years older and looked it. Boy, had she really been that desperate? His grin widened. “Sandray. Who’s this with you?” They didn’t recognize him. “Professor Roak.” She began to lie. “We came back to avenge my father’s death.” “Him? Doesn’t look like a warrior to me,” the bounty hunter said. “I’m a friend of her father. He was a good man,” her father said. “A stupid reason to come back,” Roak said. “Surely if you found another world, you’d prefer to stay there. Besides, how would we chase you?” All good questions. Sandray had no idea how she’d lie her way out of this one. The bounty hunter smiled. “Roak worried when you disappeared, until we found another aircar missing. Figured there was no way two of you went missing in the desert.” He inclined his head toward Sandray, his smile shifting to one that sent a cold shiver up her spine. “Roak sought out my services. He’s pissed off with how you used him. Took a chance you may return.” She’d die before returning to the fortress. Her laser, shoved into a pocket, would not remain there once they were frisked. Not daring to look at her watch, she wondered how much longer they had. 171
Gateway She backed towards the centre of the coil. “Stop,” the bounty hunter demanded. She didn’t. Roak took a step towards her. She took another, maintaining the distance between them. Two more and she’d be in range. The bounty hunter raised his rifle. “I said stop, both of you.” “What will happen to us?” Sandray said. “You’ll not be hurt. You appear to know something about the gateway, unless your companion brought you here,” Roak said. Liar. Bounty hunters are used to sell good to the highest bidder. “It’s to do with sequences,” her father said. Interest sparked in Roak’s eyes. “Go on.” “Do we have to listen to this?” the bounty hunter said. Roak raised his hand. “Two minutes is all I ask.” More than enough time, she hoped. What a genius you are, Dad. “Two minutes, no more. I want us out of here.” “What was the world you went to like?” Roak asked, genuinely interested. If he thought this was going to be two pals having a chat, he was mistaken. He’d betrayed her. “It was pretty barren. We found a renegade group who made our lives difficult.” Roak nodded curtly. “And this man? He’s your lover?” She had to suppress her laughter. “A friend.” 172
Sarah Dickson “One and a half minutes.” Gosh. That went fast. Her father spoke. “The algorithm is very complex.” He pressed his pockets. “Um. Do you have a notepad?” Roak shook his head. “Move aside and I’ll use the floor.” Her father and she moved closer to the centre, just inside range. One more step would ensure they’d not be dissected when they returned. “Tell your friend I’m going to do a drawing on the floor.” “I can hear from here,” the bounty hunter said. “One minute.” Dust rose as her father drew lines on the floor. When done, he said. “The gateway is not much—” “Time’s up,” the bounty hunter said. She gave her father a stricken glance. He dropped the comm. She was about to curse him, when she noticed what direction it slid in. Right under the coil. Roak knelt and picked it up. “What is this?” his eyes widened. “One of my comm units. What are you doing with it?” “I modified it,” Sandray said, moving to reach his side. The hunter strode over. A ripple of energy started from above. Sandray shoved Roak away and he fell backwards, sprawling onto the ground. Pink light enveloped them and the two men 173
Gateway disappeared from view.

ain lanced throughout his shoulder. The room blurred, then cleared as Esterol re-opened his eyes. “Sandray?” he croaked. A face appeared above him. Talos rubbed his hands together. A smile crossed his cracked lips. “About time.” “Where’s Sandray?” he asked more clearly. “Not here, but don’t worry. She’ll return soon.” He raised his arm to grip the edge of the bunk to climb out. The pain returned with a vengeance. Then he remembered being shot, and Sandray beside him. “She’s not in danger?” “Of course not. Lie down.” Esterol winced as the monk removed the gel bandage from his shoulder. “Your wound is looking much better,” Talos said. “We should apply the gel once more.” With what he knew of the gel’s healing properties, it must have been as bad as Sandray’s. “How long have I been under?” “Just the night. Your wound’s nearly healed.” Talos applied more gel. “This will make sure it 175
Gateway heals properly.” It flowed over his shoulder to partway down his arm. The relief was immediate. He flexed his shoulder, the pain barely noticeable. “Where exactly is Sandray?” “She’s in Landon.” “What’s she doing there?” Talos handed the comm to Esterol. “Here’s a message from her.” He played it. “Esterol. I’m back in Landon and have no way of reaching you. My father and I had to sort out a little problem. We’ll be back soon so don’t try to find us. Get well for me.” He didn’t like it at all. “What little problem?” “She’s back on Reiah.” What the? He sat up, ignoring the dull ache in his shoulder. “What the hell for?” Talos appeared flustered. “They had some business to attend to. A crystal had to be removed to prevent the gateway from being opened from Reiah.” He recalled the one Sandray took from the station in Landon. Without it, the station couldn’t be operated. If she took the one from Reiah, how was she going to return? “How does she plan to get back?” “It’s a one-off and is complicated to explain.” He didn’t need to know more. A one-off meant if she failed there’d be no way of returning. “She’s already returned to Landon, so don’t 176
Sarah Dickson worry.” “Why didn’t you tell me that in the first place?” he said annoyed. Talos shrugged. “She’s safe now and waiting for you at the station.” He desperately wanted to see her and try to convince her not to take any more risks without consulting him first. “When can I return to Landon?” Talos prodded the gel with his fingers. “It’s dried sufficiently for you to leave now, as long as you don’t do anything strenuous.” With the aid of the monk, he slipped on a clean shirt. The monk opened the small door. “Do you know where your ancestors came from originally?” His father made sure he never forgot. It had always been a name, until now. “Tyra.” Talos’s dark eyes gleamed. “Have a look at this before we send you off to Landon.” Back inside the large cavern, lights from what seemed to be from hundreds of glowing crystals filled the cave. At a nearby console Talos placed his hands over a pair of crystals. “Tyra has advanced dramatically. They have space travel. I believe their fastest ship would take three of your years to reach Kagistan.” Esterol had no idea how the monk interpreted the pulsating crystals, but it was good to hear his ancestors had not destroyed themselves. “The gateway station is operational on Tyra. You can go there after you’ve reached Landon if you 177
Gateway want.” Once, he would have done just that. He was more cautious now Sandray was in his life. All he wanted to do now was find her and make sure she was safe. “Not…yet. Maybe later.” The monk nodded. “My suggestion is, don’t rush it. Learn more about Tyra first. Once we’ve repaired the backup unit at the station in Landon, I can send you all the information you need.” He nodded. “Take me home.” “Stand here,” Talos said, indicating the crystals. They adjusted to accommodate his feet. Pink haze clouded his vision. The cave disappeared. Energy tingled over his body. A moment later, the station of Landon appeared. Sandray rose from a nearby chair. “Why did you leave me,” he demanded. She flinched under his gaze. Suddenly he never wanted her to be afraid on him, ever. “Tell me,” he said gently. He listened as she told him. When done, she said, “I didn’t have time to wait for you to recover. Besides, we knew what to do. You would have been in the way.” He snorted. She was probably right. The distance between them disappeared as he embraced her. He breathed in the familiar scent of her body, easing the tension from his. Sandray released him. “That offer of having me and father for a while. Is that still standing?” He cupped her buttocks, pressing her towards him. 178
Sarah Dickson “Of course it does.” “Oh, that feels good.” Esterol’s cock grew rock hard in an instant. “What about here?” “I don’t think so,” she said, grinning. “Well, maybe just a little foreplay.” The pink light in the station shimmered. He spun around as two aircars reappeared. “At least we don’t have to go back to the Illumination to get them.” He felt fingers teasing his bare chest. “Do you want to,” Sandray said, indicating the control room above. “No one’s there.” His lips descended on hers, cupping her buttocks in his hands. Gently releasing her he said, “Where we first met?” “Uh huh.” “It’s too dusty. I’d sneeze. Perhaps after it’s been cleaned up.” “And filled with traffic controllers. It’ll be too late then.” She ran her finger over the erection beneath his pants. “Remember how you asked me questions about the console?” How could he forget? **** Her nipples hardened and moisture seemed to pour from between her legs as she remembered. She felt his breath on her cheek. “I recall you get very horny after you’ve had a scary experience.” “I’ve been back for hours and all I’ve thought 179
Gateway about is you doing this to me,” she said. “You mentioned foreplay?” Lips descended on hers, and his tongue savored her mouth in a teasing leisurely dance. Her tongue met his, caught it in her snare before releasing it again. Releasing her, he said. “If you ever leave without me again, I will refuse to pleasure you.” And teased her mound through her dress as if to reinforce his words. She lifted her dress. “Give me a taste of what I could miss if I misbehave.” Two fingers rested at the entrance of her passage. Deep inside, a spark gave way to a flame. “You promise?” How could he do this to her? “Yessssss.” Slowly he slid two fingers into her passage. She leaned into him. He went deeper, teasing that sensitive place inside. “Say it!” A shudder tore through her. “I promise.” He withdrew his hand. “Good. I don’t think I’d be able to restrain myself much longer.” She tried not to laugh but couldn’t help it. He was in a lot of discomfort if the bulge in his pants was any indication. Lowering her dress, she said, “Let’s use the aircars to get back to the hut. It’ll be quicker.” “Wait. I have something for you.” He removed the ring from his pocket. “It’s a gift a man gives to a woman he intends to marry.” Did she hear him right? “Marriage?” “We may only last a month, but I think you’re worth the risk.” 180
Sarah Dickson He handed the ring to her. She turned it over in her hands. It was very plain. She slipped it on her ring finger but it was too big. She tried her middle finger instead, a good fit. “I’ll accept your offer gladly.” He climbed into one of the aircars. “Good. Let’s go and consummate it.” Not the most eloquent proposal she had. Airborne, they drifted outside. She sidled her car beside his. “You really are an interesting man, Esterol. I have heard many marriage proposals and yours has to be the most original.” His cheeks went pink. “I’m not good at this sort of thing.” “It’s a lovely gift. All you have to do is get my father’s blessing.” Horror crossed his face. “Are you serious?” “He approves of you now.” “Speaking of which, where is he?” There had been many things she and her father had discussed after they returned to Landon. “He went back to the Illumination. There’s much to do before people can be allowed to travel between worlds again.” “You mean in case there’s a hostile world like Reiah.” “Yes.” “If you even dare even contemplate returning to another world to retrieve a crystal, heed my warning.” She gave a mock shudder. “I’d dare not upset you 181
Gateway again.” Her gaze went hard. “I mean it. No traveling without me.” Reiah had been too close a call. She nearly didn’t make it back. “I don’t plan to. I want to discover this world, your world.” “And you will; now you’re my companion. How long do we have before we have to act responsibly?” “My father believes we’d be good ambassadors for Kagistan. Once the Mind has screened a world and deemed it non-hostile, he wants us to visit it and open up relations.” Diplomacy was not his strength. “I’m no negotiator.” “My father is, and oddly enough good at it. Now he’s looking younger, he’s found a renewed vigor.” “There are a lot of worlds out there. He’ll not be able to do them all.” “I would like to aid him, eventually.” “I can hardly stop you doing such an important task,” he said reluctantly. “No you can’t. Besides, I can handle myself.” That, he had no doubt. “Who else can you can trust on Kagistan?” He ran his finger over his chin, his gaze thoughtful. “Lotin for a start.” The man who’d given her shelter after Kalen had attacked her. A pity their only conversation had been through a haze of pain. She’d take Esterol’s word on him. “Who else?” 182
Sarah Dickson “There are others.” His mood seemed to lighten. “Between us, we should be able to look after Kagistan’s interests.” There was more, such as who’d look after the gateway station in Landon. A whole new security force would be needed. And other things best left for another time. “I’m not blind by the responsibility we face. How much time we have,” Esterol said. People had waited for two hundred years for this day. They could wait a bit longer. “My father suggests a year, maybe longer.” “It will take that long for people to become really used to the idea.” It seemed Esterol was not was fooled by the enormity of the task. Being the sole gateway station on Kagistan, Landon would become the hub for a whole new tourist trade. It was going to take some time getting used to. He grinned. “A year, eh? That’s going to be another record for me.” “Being with the same woman?” He nodded. “Before you become too puffed up with pride, it will be a first for me, too.” “Looks like this is going to be a challenge all round?” The cheek of the man. “It’s going to be an interesting ride,” she said, not fooled at all as to what awaited them. His eyes were smoldering. "I want to have a very 183
Gateway boring life with you, preferably in my bed.” She pretended to look horrified. “A year in bed?” He ran his finger over her breast, sending her nipple hard. “A week for a start, then we’ll go from there.”
