Plate XL Chain body armour from Pergamum and other items (see pp. 313-16) A relief from the temple of Athena Nicephorus at Pergamum. To the left are two crossed ' Galatian' shields, and in front of them a convex round shield, smaller than the traditional hoplon. Such a shield appears in the sarcophagus of Alexander from Sidon, and seems to be an interim model that was used in Greece. In the lower lefthand corner is a piece of fur, or hairy leather, whose use is not clear. At bottom right is a kind of sleeveless ' shirt' or corselet made of metal mesh, used as body armour. Such shirts appear twice more in the Pergamum reliefs (see Bohn 1885: pis. 41, 44). Presumably a leather shirt was worn under the mail. Both literary sources and archaeological finds indicate that chain mail was used by the Galatians. In the upper right-hand corner is a bull's head with its tongue hanging out. The open mouth and the form of the ears suggest that it is a carnyx, a Galatian wind instrument used to raise a din on the battlefield to frighten the enemy. On archaeological evidence from Britain on the Galatian carnyx see Allen 1958: 44-6; Powell 1958: 266. Berlin (East), Staatliche Museen, Antikensammlung. 583
Plate XII. Elephant and cub, tower and archers, in the bowl from Capena (see pp. 16-17, 317-23, 335) A painted bowl found at Capena in Campania in south-west Italy, now at the Villa Giulia Museum in Rome. The elephant is probably Indian, given its height, raised head, curved back and sloping hindquarters. The trailing cub shows it to be female. On its neck is the mahout, wielding a stick with a hook on the end to spur and guide the animal. On the elephant's back is a red carpet and tower, tied to its body with three straps. Two soldiers with bows are seen in the tower. The side of the tower has a roundish object, evidently a shield, attached to it. The Indian origin of the elephant and the place where the bowl was found make it possible to set the scene in one of the Italian campaigns of King Pyrrhus of Epirus (280-275 B.C.). The scene is generally considered to represent a well-known story, derived from Roman annalists, that at the battle of Beneventum the pain of a wounded elephant cub led its mother to stampede among Pyrrhus' warriors and thus affect the course of battle. The later manufacture of the bowl accounts for the errors in some secondary details of the elephant's anatomy: the Indian cow elephant has small tusks or none at all; protruding curved tusks are more characteristic of the African bush elephant which was never employed in battle; the end of the trunk features two ' fingers' typical of the African elephants of both bush and forest. Plate XIII. War elephants (see pp. 16-17, 317-23, 334-5) a. Silver phalera from the Leningrad Hermitage Purportedly found in southern Russia, the phalera was acquired by the Hermitage in the early eighteenth century. It is of uncertain provenance, and was originally used as an ornament for a war elephant or horse. The dragon on the rug, the south Russian provenance, and especially the hat of the first soldier resembling that of King Eucratides of Bactria (toward the middle of the second century B.C.), lead to the conclusion that the elephant pictured served the Greeks in Bactria in the Hellenistic period. Bibliography: Kondakov and Tolstoi 1891: 427; Rostovtzeff 1940: 1. 433; Scullard 1974: 244. The portrait of Eucratides appears in Head 1932: pi. 41, no. 32; Tarn 1951: 563, where there are additional Bactrian hats as well. The elephant is Indian, as shown by the curved back, the steeply sloping hindquarters, the triangular ear, flat forehead, and shape of the trunk end. The mahout, wearing a kind of Indian fez, is seated on the elephant's neck holding a stick with a hook in the middle to spur the animal which has a relatively thin rug, with an oriental dragon design, on its back. The sides of the tower are reinforced with thin metal, and its back had an opening for the soldiers, who climbed up to it on a rope ladder. The two soldiers in it are equipped with lances. Given the proportions, they seem to be sitting on stools inside the tower. Leningrad, Hermitage. Photo: Hermitage. 585
Plate XIII (Cont.) b. A terracotta from Myrina A painted terracotta found at Myrina in western Asia Minor with other finds of the third century B.C., now in the Louvre. The curved back, steep slope of the hindquarters and triangular ear are typical of the Indian elephant. On its back is a heavy red carpet which provided some protection, and a kind of square tower, likewise red, on which two blue shields are fixed for both decoration and reinforcement. The tower walls have crenellations, but it is not manned. The mahout seated on the elephant's neck is wearing a conical Macedonian helmet. The elephant has a large bell hanging around its neck. Its trunk is curled around an infantry soldier, and its tusks are goring him. The soldier has an oval shield and a sword. It is generally agreed that the terracotta commemorates the 'elephant victory' of Antiochus I against the Galatians in western Asia Minor after the First Syrian War. Bibliography: S. Reinach 1885: 485-9; id. 1888: 318-23; von Bienkowski 1928: i42ff.; Rostovtzeff 1940: 1.432; Bar-Kochva 1973a: 1-5; Scullard 1974: 122-3, and 273 n. 65. Paris, Musee du Louvre. Photo: Chuzeville.

Plate XIV. War elephants (see pp. 16-17, 317—23) a. Terracotta from Pompei Now in the Naples Museum, this terracotta obviously depicts an African forest elephant, as shown by the small size of the animal, its round ear, concave back, gently sloping hindquarters, and the two ' fingers' at the end of the trunk. The mahout is an African black. The tower designed for a single soldier is fixed onto the elephant with three chains. A shield is attached to a tower wall, on which courses of large bricks are drawn. Taking into account the place where the terracotta was found, and the type of elephant, the statuette may commemorate Hannibal's campaign in Italy. Bibliography: Scullard 1974: 244, and pi. 10. Cf. the tower for a single soldier on an African elephant in von Bienkowski 1928: fig. 222. Naples, Museo Nazionale. Photo: Foglia. 587
Plate XIV (Cont.) b. Amulet of elephant and soldiers in an attack Etching on an amulet in the Cabinet de France; see Daremberg and Saglio, s.v 'Elephas', p. 540, fig. 2624; Scullard 1974: 245. The elephant has the small stature and slightly concave back characteristic of th African type. It thus probably originates in Ptolemaic or Punic territory, or is perhap connected with one of the first-century B.C. European or African wars in which th Romans used elephants. The elephant's trunk is wrapped round a soldier holdini an elongated shield, and the scene has certain similarities with that depicted on th Myrina terracotta (PL XIII b). The elephant has a mahout on its neck and ; platform with low railing on its back. Two broad straps from the corners of th platform wind round the animal's belly. The two soldiers are in the throes c attacking, their right arms raised to hurl stones or spears.
c. Coin from Campania A small silver coin, of unknown mintage, with no legend. The presumption is tha it originated in Campania in south-western Italy, at the end of the third centur B.C., and that it was issued by one of the Italian cities that rebelled against Roirn after Hannibal's victory at Cannae. Most features point to an African origin of th< forest type for the elephant (the head lower than the back, the two 'fingers' at th< end of the trunk, and the large, round ear). The heads of three soldiers are visibL above the tower. On the coin and the complicated problems involved, see F Imhoof-Blumer, Monnaies grecques (Paris 1883) 4596°.; H. H. Scullard, 'Hannibal' elephants', Numismatic Chronicle 5 10 (1949) 158-68; H. H. Scullard and W. Gowers 'Hannibal's elephants again', Numismatic Chronicle 610 (1950) 271-80; Scullard 1974: 170-3, and the bibliography there in p. 277 n. i n .
d. 'Armoured' elephant (see p. 334) A bronze elephant head with silver eyeballs, found in Etruria in north-westerr Italy, now in the M. Julien Greau collection. Reproductions appear in Daremberg and Saglio, s.v. 'Elephas', p. 540, fig. 2625; Scullard 1974: 239. The round ear anc sloping forehead show it to be an African forest elephant. On the face, above th< trunk (missing in the sculpture), is an armour mask with openings for the eyes. The neck, too, is covered in chain armour. 588
