Rekindling the Flame
Ambrielle Kirk
Chapter One Mia Johnson raised her arms over her head and arched her back. Her muscles were stiff from sitting behind her desk nearly all day. She rubbed at the ache in the back of her neck and stared at the computer screen. There should be more than twenty-four hours in a day. Maybe even twenty-eight. Then she’d be able to get a full eight hours of sleep instead of the average four she’d been getting for the past several months. And she could even put in some extra study hours toward her Doctorate degree. So much for wishful thinking… She scanned the contract on her laptop for the fiftieth time. Working ten hour days was hardly enough time to get her forever growing to-do list completed. That’s what she got for trying to do too much. Taking a demanding position as the contract manager at one of the biggest investment firms in the South while trying to finish law school to become a contract lawyer was probably the best and worst decision she’d made in her life. She just had to believe there was light at the end of this grueling, but rewarding, journey toward fulfilling her career path. She let out a breath of exasperation. Now, if she could only finish the amendments to this dang contract. The client had rejected it twice already. Little Miss Uppity failed to take adequate notes outlining the agreed terms at the meeting last week, costing the company time and money…and possibly a client. Miss Uppity was probably too busy sucking up to Jordan during the negotiations. If she stopped trying to be his personal strumpet instead of his personal paralegal then maybe she wouldn’t be so nitwitted. Mia groaned. It was past time for her to go home, and she still sat in the office cleaning up someone else’s mess. Who could blame the woman? The day Jordan Bell inherited the family real estate investment firm, he walked through the doors of the company and nothing had been the same since. He exuded confidence, and definitely had the brains to take over the operations. Not to mention, he attracted the high profile clients they’d never been able to obtain when his stepmother ran the place. 1

Mia scrunched her nose. That man had used his good looks and sex appeal to get what he wanted ever since she’d met him in graduate school. He hadn’t changed one bit. Too bad he was out of her league. It was so ironic how things had changed for Jordan practically overnight. Four years ago when his dad made partner at the firm now known as Bell and Chapman, LLC, Jordan changed. Then he became a distant reminder that she’d made too many silly mistakes through college and graduate school. Whatever friendship they’d had in the past was now long gone. Mia hit the print button, but this time she breathed a sigh of relief. The pinch of tension in her head from today’s efforts didn’t disappear. Pressing her fingers to her temples, she propped her elbows up on her desk and closed her eyes. “Sleeping on the job?” The familiar male voice startled her so badly she nearly pounced off her seat. Her gaze fell on Jordan who stood in her doorway with two coffee containers in his hands and a smug grin on his face. He looked sexier than the man on the cover of the GQ magazine the ladies passed around the office all day. A heated blush rushed over her face, but not from embarrassment. She peered at him from under her lashes. He wore the usual business casual, jeans and a dress shirt. The black shirt complemented his sleek jet-black hair. The waistband of the jeans wasn’t too tight or loose, and fit perfectly on the top of his hips. Mia nibbled the corner of her lip and looked away. “I was just finishing up.” She stacked the papers strewn over her desk. How did she let it get so messy? “Maybe you can use a hot latte to wake you up.” She could use more than a cup of joe. A nice warm bath, wine, and relaxation to unwind for the night would do the trick. Unfortunately, no such thing would await her when she arrived home. She had no one to go home to. No man to hump. No stress relief would be in sight. The only thing she could count on waiting on her was the laptop with her unfinished research paper on it.

“I wasn’t sleeping.” Mia didn’t look up as she grabbed her briefcase from under the desk. “Sure.” He set both cups on the edge of her desk and picked up the rolled up Wall Street Journal the mailroom lady brought this morning. “Our market share rose this morning. We’re now ranked number six among real estate investment firms.” “So I heard. Congratulations, Jordan. Your changes in the business plan seem to be working.” Jordan peered up from the cover page he’d just skimmed. “I couldn’t have done it alone. I have the most valuable employees to thank for that. Speaking of…” He set the newspaper down, lifted his arm, and looked at his wristwatch. “It’s late, Mia. Why are you still here?” Mia smiled sweetly. “Because I had work.” She reached across the desk and grabbed one of the lattes. “Thank you.” Lifting it to her lips, she studied him as she took a sip. His dark brown eyes never left her, roaming over her in that devilish way she’d always remembered. It made her warm and giddy inside like the woman she thought she’d left behind in college. Her toes curled inside her pumps when a sly grin spread across his face. “You’re very welcome.” He leaned forward and grabbed the other coffee. “Any weekend plans?” “More work.” He lifted an eyebrow. “For the firm? You shouldn’t work on weekends. Get rest so th—” “I know,” she interrupted. “Get some rest so that I’m more productive during the week. I meant working, as in studying.” “Mia, Mia,” he teased. “You work too hard. When do you have fun?” Mia swallowed, and for the moment, no words came to her. She racked her brain, but no answer or excuse came quickly enough. When did she have fun? Did sitting in front of the TV on Sundays watching Lifetime movie marathons and True Blood reruns count as fun? Her frequent impulse shopping sprees for shoes and handbags gave her a good rush when she needed it, at least. 3

“It’s time for me to go.” She rose from the desk, coffee in one hand, and briefcase in the other. He fell in step beside her. “I never got a straight answer from you about the trip.” She laughed, and increased her pace. “We’ve been at this for two weeks, Jordan. You know the answer.” “I need to hear it.” When they approached the elevators, he reached out and hit the button to go down. “What’s the big deal, huh? You’ve been acting like you don’t know me, like there’s nothing between us.” He propped a hand against the wall inside the elevator and leaned in to her. “There’s this one chance, and I need your help to seal this deal. There’s no one else—” Mia shook her head. “There is someone else. My assistant, Barbara, would love to assist you. I trust that she knows what she’s doing, and she’d be a fine replacement for me.” “I don’t want Barbara to assist me. I’ve already asked who I want.” She squinted, and drew her lips in a tight line. “I can’t come with you on that business trip, Jordan…and you know why.” Turning her back, she exited the elevators into the lower level parking lot. “Our relationship has nothing to do with this, Mia,” he called out behind her. Her pumps clicked against the asphalt until she stopped in front of her car. “There is no relationship, Jordan. What don’t you understand about that?” Swallowing the pain of her own words, she tossed her briefcase on the passenger seat and slid inside. She couldn’t help but glance at Jordan through the tinted windows. His eyebrows were drawn together, his face long, and his arms hung limply at his sides. It was the look he’d always donned when he didn’t get his way. And there weren’t too many times that Mr. Rich Guy didn’t get his way. Mia shifted gears and drove off.

Chapter Two “I can’t believe you haven’t had sex in almost a year!” Mia dropped her head in embarrassment and cupped her forehead in her palm. She wished she could vanish into thin air. Maybe the ground beneath them would suddenly split open, and she would jump right in and hide in hell. Anything to escape this humiliation. It seemed everyone sitting at the tables surrounding them got quiet after her big-mouthed best friend’s outburst. She groaned and lifted her head with eyes widened in disbelief. “Can you scream my business out any louder?” Shame crossed over Angel’s face, and she brought a hand up to her mouth. “Oops, sorry.” Her gaze shifted left and right, finally settling on the couple ogling them from across the aisle. “Hi!” She should have known better than to reveal so much about her love life. Knowing Angel, she would have figured it out. She hadn’t been on a real date in forever, and her friend constantly hounded her about double dating. The supermodel had a new guy friend to talk about every month. Her friend’s career afforded her the lifestyle that allowed her free reign to pick and choose over hundreds of bachelors. Mia traced the drip of water draining down the side of her glass. “Look, my sex life is not what I’m concerned about at the moment.” “Then what is it, Mia?” Angel leaned in closer, her lips pursed out. “I talked to you last week before I boarded my flight back to the States, and you said everything was fine. What’s changed?” She hadn’t seen Angel in nearly six months. Her agency had sent her to work with a fashion designer in Milan on an all-expense paid trip. “I wanted you to enjoy your trip without worrying about me. Your career has taken off so much,” Mia said. “Come on, girl. We’re best buddies. I worry when you keep things from me. What’s going on?” Mia traced the squared pattern on the table cloth. “I’m moving.”

“I thought you wanted to share a condo with me. Now you don’t?” Angel flipped her hair off her shoulders with a freshly manicured hand. “What’s up with that?” She knew Angel would pretend to take in her news nonchalantly. It wasn’t very often that the woman shared her true feelings with anyone. They’d been living together for over two years. Of course, the five feet eleven inch beauty barely stayed there. She spent her life virtually on the road. It was convenient for the both of them to go half on the condo rental at the time they agreed. “It’s not that. I’m moving closer to home.” She took a sip of her coke as Angel stared at her with a bit of shock on her face. “Dad’s retiring from the law firm, and his colleagues have offered me the position.” “Really?” Angel smiled. “That’s awesome, but what about finishing your Doctorate and your job at Bell and Chapman?” Mia shrugged. “When Walters hired me, the job started out as work study as his temporary assistant. He knew that I’d resign eventually.” “How long have you known about all this?” “Just last week.” When Dad had called her to break the news of his early retirement, she was happy for him. He’d worked for twenty-five years at that firm. “We’d been talking about me working there for about a year, but I didn’t plan to do so this soon.” Angel frowned. “So, you’ve made up your mind then?” Mia took a deep breath. “Pretty much.” “You’ll still be my homegirl, right?” Angel gave a cheeky smile. “Don’t make me come after you, because you know I will.” “Of course, Angel.” Something about her worry-free friend always lifted her spirits. No matter what the circumstances were. “Have you found a place yet?” She shook her head. “No. I plan on looking as soon as I can before my parents start to drive me crazy.” Angel laughed. “This could be a good change for you.” She leaned in a little closer. “Maybe you should hook up with one of your old high school boyfriends.” 6

Mia picked up her fork, and made a stabbing motion at Angel. “Very funny. I’m done with men.” “What? You into women now then?” Her friend’s eyes widened. “Never that. I just want to concentrate on me now.” “Well, if you ever need some options, I’ve got a little bla—” “No.” Angel giggled. As they continued eating their dinner, Mia agreed that this move could be a good change for her. Anything to get her out of the slummy mood she’d been in lately.

Chapter Three Mia pulled her car into the assigned spot in the condo’s parking garage. Thank goodness the woman who parked next to her wasn’t there at the moment. Usually, the huge SUV would be parked close to the white line, making it difficult for Mia to exit her car without denting the door. Mia’s ass wasn’t that big. Well, at least that’s what she thought, but she preferred a bit of elbow room once in a while. The parking situation was one of the things that Mia wouldn’t miss when she moved back to her hometown. She exited the cool interior of her car into the hot musty garage. The one hour visit she’d planned at the gym had turned into three hours, occupying much of the entire morning. She’d needed the cardio to relieve the stress of being buried knee deep in law research and contracts. Now it was time to unwind, order Chinese food, and curl up in front of her DVR. Mia grabbed her duffle bag from the trunk, swung it over her shoulder, and headed for the elevators. The security guard manning the parking garage gave her a smirk when she passed by. She couldn’t believe that Angel had actually suggested that she and that guy would make a good couple when they moved here. For one, he was a bit too young for her taste, and she found darker hair on men sexier. Only Angel would get a kick out of having sex with the security guard to add to her ever growing list of conquests. Her aggressive sexual nature reminded Mia of someone else she knew…and tried to avoid. Jordan. Why couldn’t she get him out of her head? The things that happened to her body when he looked at her the way he did was just too much. That’s what she got for encouraging a relationship based on sex. He probably knew her body better than he knew her. It was a shame. And it was exactly why they weren’t together anymore. She just had to face it. As long as she worked within his company, there was no avoiding him. Moving would definitely take care of that. Then they’d be hundreds of miles apart and she wouldn’t have to worry about running into him again. Ever. Mia stepped off the elevator just as her duffle bag seemed like it weighed a ton. From down the hall, she could make out the figure of a very tall man 8

leaning on the wall just outside her door. His head was down and he was on the phone. The repairman was scheduled to come out next week, not today. Who was this guy? She decreased her pace and peered down the hall through the slits of her eyes. The brown-skinned guy didn’t look like the repair guy. There were no tools on his belt. His clothes were business casual, and there was not a company name badge in sight. Her eyes dropped to glance at the hand hanging down at his side. She gasped and stopped in the middle of the hallway. The ring on his right hand with her college alma mater was all the proof she needed to confirm this man’s identity. Mia lifted her eyes at the same time he looked up, his gaze falling on her. This couldn’t be. There was no way. It was Alan Griffin. Her ex-fiancé. There was no time now to turn back and run the other way. He’d already cracked a smile, as if he was overjoyed to see her. Why today? Why now? What did he want? Breaking eye contact, Mia continued down the hall toward him. It’d been almost a year since she’d talked to him. Last August, she’d made a decision that had almost cost her the respect of her family. She canceled their wedding date and a six month long engagement. “Hi, Mia.” “Alan.” She swallowed the lump in her throat and gave him a once-over. Not much had changed since she’d last seen him. He was still taller than allget-out, handsome with coffee-colored skin that tanned nicely in the summer. The six-foot-three ex-basketball player had always been slim in build with just the right amount of muscles. “Why are you here?” “To see how you’re doing.” Mia detected a stretch of the truth. Something told her that he stood at her door step for something more than to see how she was doing. He was probably only trying to be nosy. More than likely, he already knew how she was doing. During their six month long engagement, he’d become the best of

friends with her older brother, Terrence. They were still extremely close, and Terrence had a big mouth. “I’m doing great.” She pulled a set of keys out of her pants pocket, and fumbled to unlock her door. Alan slipped his cell phone into the case clipped to the waist band of his jeans. “I came to visit a frat brother of mine. He had his bachelor party just last night and I flew up to come.” She threw her bags in the closet in her foyer, and with shaky hands, put her keys on the hook by the door. He still stood outside when she looked up, his eyes sweeping back and forth, observing the surroundings behind her. “You can come in.” She stepped aside. “You still live with Angel?” Nobody but her dingbat brother could have told Alan that she and Angel had moved in together. “Yes, we still live together.” Alan’s face relaxed, and he stepped over the foyer. “Nice.” His gaze traveled back and forth over her things. “I can see why you prefer the big city as opposed to back home.” “I don’t necessarily prefer it. I’m finishing up with school, and I have a career here.” Mia walked into her kitchen where she’d left her laptop sitting this morning, and powered it on. “You still working at that place?” “What place?” She knew exactly what he was referring to, but that place had a name. He shrugged. “You know. Bell and Chapman.” “Of course.” Speaking of, she needed to check email to make sure the contract for the Lockwood expansion had been delivered on time yesterday. She turned her attention to her laptop and opened her email program. “When was the last time you came home?” You mean you don’t already know? She almost let the flippant question slip from her mouth, but decided against it. “Two months ago. My mother’s fiftieth birthday dinner and celebration.” “Hhmm, really?” He turned his attention from the magnets on her refrigerator to peer at her. “I didn’t know about it.” 10

“Didn’t Terrence tell you?” This time, she didn’t hold the sarcastic remark back. “Oh, I forgot. He was working overseas that month, and didn’t have time to run his mouth.” Alan grinned. “Still got that smart-assed mouth, don’t you?” She smiled for the first time since she’d seen Alan waiting at her door. “And you know this.” The UPS email confirmed that the documents had been delivered on time. She’d give it a day or two before she called Mr. Smith’s secretary to double check. Walters wanted to have the contract executed and reviewed by Jordan before he left on his business trip to California. “Too bad you have to leave all this behind.” He stood by the glass double doors leading out to a small patio. She rolled her eyes. “How much do you already know?” “Enough.” When he turned around, he had a serious expression on his face. “It’s gotta be lonely up here with you in school and working all the time.” Mia nodded. “I work a lot, but the benefits are rewarding. I’m only a few semester hours and one final exam away from earning the degree I deserve.” “Congratulations. Take time to celebrate.” He took a seat across the table from her. “One of the guys told me about a nice restaurant while I was at the party. Forty-nine. All the politicians and everybody who is anybody eat there when they’re in the city. Would you like to be my date?” “I’ve eaten there before,” she said, deliberately avoiding the question. “Are you free tonight, or tomorrow?” Was he asking her out on a date? After all they’d been through? After what she’d done to him, and how he’d tried to sabotage any chance of her having any kind of relationship with anyone else? “I’m very busy for the next few days.” His eyes were hopeful, like they always were when he really wanted something. It was the same expression on his face as when he’d asked for her hand in marriage. “You tell me then. I’m returning home, and I’d really like to take you out.”

She felt sorry for him, and a remorseful sensation washed over her. “I’ll think about it. Tuesday, maybe.” Alan’s eyes brightened. “Great. I’d really like to catch up on things, Mia. It’s been a long time.” Mia bit her lips, and contemplated why he chose now to reconnect with her after almost a year. Either way, leading him on was one thing that she definitely didn’t want to do. “Let’s get one thing straight.” She locked gazes with him, hoping that he took what she had to say seriously. “I’ll go with you to the restaurant…as friends. Terrence tells me that you ask about me all the time. Who, what, when, where, why…and if I’m dating again. I’m not interested in dating or relationships right now. My priority is my work.” Alan took a noticeable deep breath. “Sure. I get that.” He glanced down at his wrist watch. “Well, I better go. I’m glad I stopped by.” Mia led him to the door. The awkwardness was a sure indication of how far they’d grown apart. Had they ever known each other that well anyway? It’d been her father who’d introduced her to Alan, then boasted about how much the man had going for himself. He came from a wealthy family, and was known throughout their hometown as upstanding. Alan was the perfect son-in-law to both her parents. He’d earned their trust and respect way before she became romantically involved with him. What they didn’t know about Alan was how controlling he could be. They had no idea that she’d threatened to leave him way before she ended the engagement. The choice was to lose her or get help with his anger management issues. There were times when he’d lashed out at her for small things—forgetting to add fabric softener to his load of clothes or the time she dyed her hair black. Many times, he’d raised his hands to hit her, but always caught himself before he carried it out. The signs of a physical and emotional abuser were there, and she’d demanded that he get help immediately. Over the course of anger management intervention, he’d improved significantly. Their relationship never quite took off after that, though, and Mia realized that she’d stayed with Alan so long to please her parents. She 12

genuinely cared about him, but as a good friend. Several times, she’d tried to tell Alan how she felt, but he didn’t take her seriously. Then she met Jordan…and thought she could have her cake and eat it too. “See you Tuesday.” Mia shook her head, ridding herself of those distant memories. “Yeah. See you then.” After closing the door behind her, she pressed her back to the wall. Squeezing her eyes shut, she took a deep breath. Damn Jordan. Her emotions resembled a roller coaster ride whenever she thought about him. Young, carefree, and still known for his bad boy ways, Jordan wasn’t good for her. Not unless she wanted another broken heart.

Chapter Four Mondays were always hectic for Mia. It was even busier as all the executives of the company geared up for the big conference in California. She’d sustained on power bars and coffee the whole day. Mia grabbed her cell phone and glanced at the calls she’d ignored since this morning. No one important, except for her dad, had called her. She’d talk to him when she got home. No doubt it had something to do with the moving details. For now, she would enjoy this moment of quiet free time. There was a knock on her door, and she looked up just as Barbara walked into her office. There goes the free time. “Just seeing if there was anything else you needed from me before I called it quits,” her assistant said. “No, Barbara.” She shook her head. “All the contracts have been finalized and sent off.” Thank goodness for that. It meant that tomorrow wouldn’t be as hectic. She could only hope. “I can’t believe you’ve put in your separation notice. Everyone’s in shock that you’re leaving the firm.” Barbara crossed her arms over her chest. “What will Walters do without you?” “He’ll have you. I’ve already recommended you for the position. Now all you have to do is apply.” Mia grinned. “You do plan on applying, don’t you?” Barbara bit her bottom lip, and then her gaze dropped to the ground. “We’ll see. There are already several people more qualified than me who are applying.” “Never mind them.” Mia winked. “You deserve this position.” “My chances are slim.” Her assistant breathed a deep sigh of relief. “I did decide on taking the next two days off before the conference. My son and daughter-in-law came down with the baby this weekend so I didn’t get much cleaning or packing done.” “Fine by me.” Mia shrugged. “You work too hard anyway.” “I’ll see you when I get back from the conference.” Barbara smiled. “With updates, of course.” 14

“I’ll need those updates.” Mia nodded. She was so glad when Barbara had agreed to go in her place. She was super busy with moving arrangements, and she couldn't afford the distraction from her plans. “Thanks for going in my place, and please call me with any questions.” “Will do.” Barbara turned around just as she neared the door and almost ran smack dab into Jordan on the way out. She let out a shocked yelp. “Jordan, I’m surprised to see you’re still here.” Jordan glanced from Barbara to Mia, then back again. “I’m on the way out the door actually. My flight leaves in the morning.” “Awesome, boss. See you in Cali.” Barbara excused herself and exited the office. Jordan cleared his throat. “May I have a word with you?” He came inside and closed the door without her reply. “Yes, please do come in.” Mia tried to keep her tone stoic, but the sarcasm still prevailed. Her body temperature rose a few digits as he neared her desk. It was late. Almost near dinner time, so hardly anyone was still in the building. He’d removed his tie and left a couple buttons loosened on his shirt. That’s the way he preferred to dress anyway, casual. She never took him for the dressy type. When they’d been really close, his normal attire consisted on polo shirts and jeans. Always jeans. “When were you going to tell me?” Jordan’s forehead creased, just like it always did when he worried about something. “I didn’t know that I had to answer to you. My boss’s name is Robert Walters.” She picked up her coffee and took a sip. The brew was cold and stale. She refrained from spewing it back into the mug. “Mia, let’s not go back and forth like children. Why did you resign? Is it something I did, something I said?” “No, Jordan.” She exhaled and the tension faded in her back and shoulders. He sat down in the chair directly in front of her desk. “What is it, Mia? Less hours, more pay, benefits? Tell me, I’ll fix it.”

Was he serious? Did he really want her to stay? She searched his eyes for any hint of bullshit. He was known for it. There was none there this time. “You knew that when I took this job, even while your stepmother was running it, I didn’t plan to stay indefinitely. This is not the career path I wanted.” “Yeah, I know.” He ran his fingers through his hair, and sat farther back in his chair. “But, why are you moving back home?” “I’ve accepted a position at the firm my dad works at.” He swallowed noticeably, the faint outline of his Adam’s apple extending forward. “Okay, I get it. We overworked you here, now you need a more stress-free position with fewer hours. Is that it?” “It’s my dream job.” This time, she sat back in her chair, crossing her legs. “Moving would reduce the stress associated with living and working in two different cities. It’s the best thing...for me.” Why was she explaining herself to him? Why did he care? The room remained deathly quiet for several moments. He’d averted his gaze to something on the floor. She didn’t know what else to say to him. He couldn’t keep her as a slave in his company forever. Why had she even stayed all this time? Between her savings and the money her father sent to her so she wouldn’t have to work and attend school, she could have left Bell and Chapman a long time ago. Work kept her mind off other stressful situations. When she was studying and buried under contracts, she didn’t have time to worry about the past or the future. “I still love you.” The declaration was so faint that her ears pricked up. Did he just say… “What?” Love had never been a part of what they used to have. Never spoken or hinted on. What did he mean, he still loved her? Had he ever? Lust and passionate sex, yes. Love, no. His eyes met hers. “I love you. I always have, and I can’t bear the thought of not seeing you again.”

Her heart seemed to gallop in her chest, and her blood rushed through her veins in a panic. He couldn’t love her. “Jordan…” She shook her head and tried to swallow the lump in her throat. Her efforts were futile, and she couldn’t speak. Jordan rose and came around the desk. He sat on the corner of it. This time, it was her eyes that dropped to the intricate pattern on the floor. “Look at me, Mia.” He paused for a moment, giving her a chance to make eye contact. “Do you think I’m making this up?” “I don’t know,” she whispered. “I’m not.” He shook his head. “It’s been months since we’ve had a real conversation. How long are you going to avoid me?” “I’m trying to avoid stress, Jordan, that’s all.” “Are you saying that I stress you out?” He stared at her with a blank expression frozen across his face. “No, not just you.” She pressed the palm of her hand to her forehead, and then stood. “Look. Being with you was too much for me. You came with too much baggage.” A spark of knowledge replaced the bland expression on his face, indicating he knew exactly what she spoke of. “I couldn’t help that, Mia. How many times did I tell you that no other female mattered to me?” Mia turned her back, faced the floor to ceiling windows, and glanced out at the dusky sky and the orange hue of the sunset on the horizon. Jordan had been well known on and off the campus. Before her, he could’ve made playboy of the year. Had she known he’d dated just about every sorority member on campus, she would have left him alone. Every sorority member may have been an exaggeration, but he’d left a lasting impression on a few. There was a time when they couldn’t even go on a date without a woman coming up to hit on him. “One too many.” A cool breeze from the air vent above her brushed her bare shoulders. She crossed both arms over her chest and rubbed the chill bumps on her arms.

Mia smelled the familiar cologne before Jordan even touched her. Warmth enveloped her as he snaked his arms around her waist. After moments of hesitation from her, he pressed his chest closer into her back. “I missed this.” His breath fanned the delicate skin behind her ear. The chill bumps on her skin seemed to melt away instantly. She took a deep breath and drew in his woodsy scent. It had been so long since she’d felt safe and secure like this. When he pressed his chin into the top of her head, she closed her eyes, reminiscing on the times when she and Jordan would cuddle for hours in bed after a long night of sex. “So do I.” Mia interlocked fingers with his just as his hand came to rest on her hips. She blushed when his groin pressed into her ass. Heat rose up her spine and neck. This time, her body didn’t shiver from the cold, but it vibrated from the sexual tension coursing through it. “I’ve never felt this way with anyone but you.” “Don’t say things you don’t mean.” It was easy for men to confuse lust with love, just as it was too easy for her body to respond to something she most certainly needed…and wanted. “I wish you’d let me show you how much I care, and how much I want you back in my life.” She turned around while still in his arms and tilted her chin to study him. “You’re just saying that because I’m leaving.” “No.” “We’ve not been involved with each other for almost a year, and you pick now to tell me that.” Jordan swept her hair back from her face, and off her shoulders. “You’ve never threatened to leave.” “Well, let’s face it, Jordan. I’m leaving in two weeks. It’s too late now.” “It’s not too late, Mia.” He slid his fingers around the back of her neck, and bent his head slightly to brush his lips with hers. “Never too late.” Her legs felt like they were going to give out from under her. “Wh—” “Sssh.” He tilted her chin even more so that their lips were touching, and they were almost eye to eye. “Why do you deny what you so obviously want?” 18

“What I want and what I need are two different things.” “Are they now?” His voice was teasing, as if he detected a stretch of the truth. “Yes…” The words barely left her mouth as Jordan took her lips in a kiss. Her legs were now putty beneath her, and her blood felt like molten lava in her veins. The kiss seemed to go on forever, an eternity. The only reminder that any time had passed was the sound of the second hand ticking away on the grandfather clock hanging on the wall. She was the first to break away. “We didn’t just do that.” “We did.” He nodded, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. Mia glanced around him at the door. It was still closed, but anyone could have walked in on them. What had she been thinking? She reached under her desk and grabbed her briefcase. “I’ve gotta go. I’ve got an online seminar to attend in under an hour.” “Listen, Mia.” He took her arm gently. “I never meant for our relationship to end like it did.” “I know.” During their time together, he’d always expressed just how he felt. Ironically, the majority of their time was spent in bed. “Then why did it have to end?” She swallowed. “Because according to your best friend, I’m no good for you.” “Mia.” A confused expression marked his face, and an eyebrow lifted in question. “I’ve gotta go.” She turned around and hurried out of the office.

Chapter Five Alan answered her call on the very first ring. She remained silent on the other end, and then finally cleared her throat after his third hello. “It’s me, Alan. Mia.” She rushed into the bathroom, cell phone to ear, and grabbed a sack of toiletries from the linen closet. “Mia, hey.” He seemed overly excited. “I just left lunch with an old friend of mine. We were just talking about you. You remember Scotty?” Mia bit the inside corner of her lip. “You were?” She threw her makeup bag on the bed next to the suitcase. “I told him we were going out tonight. He and his fiancée might stop by the restaurant too. To catch up on old times.” “About that…” She scratched the back of her head. “I’ve been called out of town…on an emergency business trip.” Barbara had called her just as she’d walked into her office that morning to tell her that she couldn’t go to the conference because her mother had fallen ill. It was only respectful to show sympathy. Instead of running around the office like a crazy person trying to find someone to replace Barbara at the conference, she buckled down and decided to go at the last minute. “Okay…?” “I can’t go tonight, Alan. I’m catching the next flight to California.” “Come on, Mia.” He didn’t even try to hide the disappointment in his voice. “I thought we had an agreement.” “Yes, but something came up. We’re talking about my job here. I can’t just throw in the towel on this one.” “You’ve resigned. Why should you give a shit?” He practically yelled into the phone. “I’m working up until next week. I have a job to finish.” She didn’t need this stress just before taking a flight on an unplanned trip. The interruption in her schedule was already enough hassle. “Are you serious?” “Yes, I’m serious. We can go to the restaurant when I get back. There has to be a contract manager there to represent the company.” What was she 20

doing explaining herself to him? Did he think he could just walk back into her life and control her? “Bullshit!” This time, he did yell. “You’re going to him, aren’t you?” Mia gripped the phone tighter in her hand. “Excuse me?” “Jordan Bell. You’re still in love with him, aren’t you?” She bit her bottom lip so hard, she almost drew blood. “You haven’t changed one bit, have you?” “Neither have you.” A horn honked loudly in the background. “Don’t you know how to drive, you fucking idiot!” Another car horn. “When will you realize he’s not into you? All he wants is what’s between your legs.” “You jerk!” She cringed from the hurt of Alan’s words. Her blood pressure shot through the roof. “Gosh, I’m so—” “I have business to take care of, Alan. Good-bye.” She didn’t need his apologies. After disconnecting the call, she threw the Smartphone into her handbag. Mia paced her bedroom like a lunatic. She dug her fingernails into her palms in an attempt to prevent her hands from shaking. Her neck and face were on fire from anger. Everything had gone wrong today. She’d had to cancel meetings to take an emergency flight. She’d had to postpone the appointment with the moving company this evening. If she didn’t leave soon, she’d miss her flight. Her cab waited on her downstairs racking up the toll. Now she’d just had the misfortune to deal with a complete and utter bastard over the phone. She huffed, paused, and took several deep breaths. She couldn’t let Alan succeed in destroying the rest of her evening. If he wanted to act like a spoiled adolescent, then he could do so by himself. She was done with immature men. **** As Mia entered the hotel, bellhop behind her with luggage, she spotted Jordan sitting in the reception area. He tossed his coffee cup in the trash 21

receptacle, and walked toward her. A feeling of relief washed over her, but she couldn’t tell if it was because she was finally here or because of seeing a familiar face. Due to the connecting flight from RDU to LAX, it was now close to midnight. “Mia.” Jordan took her briefcase. “They told me you were flying out. I tried to catch you by cell, but my secretary said you’d already left. Then I got voicemail from there on out.” “I forgot to charge my cell before leaving home.” And her laptop, and Kindle e-reader for that matter. She sighed. “And Barbara couldn’t make it.” “Yes, I heard.” He frowned and then turned to the bellhop. “Thanks.” He shuffled through his wallet and handed the guy a fresh twenty dollar bill. “Thanks, Jordan.” Mia didn’t have the energy to argue with him. She was just too tired. Sleeping on airplanes had never been comfortable for her, even in first class. A nice soft bed with plump pillows called her name, and she needed the rest. “You look exhausted.” He pulled the cart with her bag to the receptionist desk. “Let’s get you checked in.” “Gee, thanks. I look that bad?” She managed a grin. “You’d look beautiful covered in mud.” He smiled. “I can tell you’re tired, though.” She hadn’t remembered smiling like this all day. Jordan knew how to bring out the best in her at the worst possible times, even under dismal circumstances. “I have a suite reserved for you.” He took the key card from the receptionist behind the desk, and they headed toward the elevators. “The onsite restaurant is closed. There are a few good places in the area. I can have something delivered.” “No, Jordan.” She shook her head. “I just want to call it a night. Thanks for waiting up for me.” Jordan held the elevator door for her and she stepped inside. He dragged the cart in with them. “I should thank you for coming. I’m afraid to let you go either way. There will never be another contract manager quite as dedicated as you are.” 22

“Yes, there will be.” She laughed. “You spoil your employees. That’s why they’re so hard-working and loyal.” They stopped in front of her door and she took the key card to unlock it. “I didn’t think I’d be saying this, but it’s good to finally be here.” She walked inside the spacious suite, yawning. “I’m glad you’re here, too.” Jordan placed the last of her suitcases inside. “About the other evening…” He straightened up and wiped his palms against his slacks. “I meant every word of what I said.” “I’m sure you did.” It still didn’t erase the phone conversation she’d heard him having with his best friend saying she was no good for him. Or how he allowed his family to degrade their friendship. “I’m gonna let you get your rest.” He must have sensed her fast turning mood. “Tomorrow morning there’s a breakfast for the attendees in one of the conference rooms. Can’t remember which. I hope to see you there.” “I’ll be there.” When Jordan was gone, she glanced around the big, empty extravagant suite. It welcomed her with the same lonely, solitary reality as her own bedroom. She kicked off her shoes and fell back onto the bed. Nothing mattered now except getting her rest. It was going to be a long week.

Chapter Six Sounds of silverware hitting fine china and wine bottles tapping the rims of glasses filled the grand ballroom. Chatter, laughter, and light classical music rang through the space. Business men and women from all aspects of the real estate industry wound down for the evening to the extravagant six course meal served courtesy of the conference sponsors. Mia took one last sip of her wine just as the waitress came to clear the table where she’d sat. With Jordan’s back turned, and while he said good-bye to the CEO of a local bank, she took the opportunity to excuse herself. She was so ready to call it a night. Today was only the first day of the seminar, and she was ready for it to be over soon. She smiled at and greeted a few people on her way out of the room, and then headed for the elevators. “Are you running from me?” Jordan startled her from behind. “No. Of course not.” She stepped on the elevator and Jordan followed. “You were completely zoned out during dinner. What were you thinking about?” Mia shrugged. “Just some really aggravating stuff that happened before my flight.” She couldn’t believe how Alan had overreacted to the news that she needed to cancel their outing to take a business trip. His control and anger issues were still a problem. “Can I make it any better?” “I think I’ve taken care of it.” She’d decided this morning while lying in bed that she’d definitely have to make it clear to Alan that she was done with him or avoid him at all costs. With him living less than thirty miles from her parents’ house, it would be a difficult. But one thing she wasn’t going to let him do was make her life miserable. “I hope so.” He held the elevator door open. “Your floor. Do you mind if I walk you to your room?” She smiled in acceptance. “You gave an excellent speech on investment securities.” Changing the subject from her state of angst to another topic

seemed like the best thing to do. “I think you sold quite a few of the brokers here.” Jordan grinned. “Ah, it was nothing.” “No, really. You may have sparked the curiosity of another investor with that speech.” “I was worried about that state of the firm. Wasn’t sure I had the experience to actually run the company. Unlike you, I was kind of thrown into this business. You had a choice.” She stopped in front of her door, and fumbled in her clutch for her key card. “Right. I’d always wanted to work at a law firm.” “Congratulations, by the way.” “I can’t believe that in a few weeks, I’ll be in charge of part of the operation there.” He leaned against her doorframe. “You seem very excited about it. Have you celebrated yet?” “Celebrate before I even start the job?” She wrinkled her nose. “Yeah.” He shrugged. “Why not? You deserve it.” “I’ll celebrate when I get my first paycheck.” Mia laughed. “You can help me.” It was too late to take back that statement. When around Jordan, he made her feel at ease. When they’d been in a relationship, she’d come to rely on that feeling. “I’ll remember you said that.” He smiled. “I’ll let you go.” Jordan stepped back, turned around, and started back down the hall. She opened her mouth to call him back, but thought against it. Instead, she said, “Good night.” He turned only long enough to return the greeting. **** Mia threw on her robe over her nightgown when she heard a knock. Using the peephole, she saw a maid with uniform on at the door. She hadn’t called for room service tonight. Why was the maid at her door?

Leaving the eyebolt on, she cracked it open just enough to exchange words. “Yes?” “I have a delivery for you.” She shook her head. “I didn’t order anything.” “It says room eight zero two. Ms. Johnson, yes?” Still confused, Mia opened the door and watched the lady wheel a cart inside her room. The floral fragrance from the white petals sprinkled around the arrangement of chocolates and champagne rose to her nose. She inhaled the sweet smell. “Enjoy.” The maid left the room, closing the door beside her. Mia already had a hunch about who was responsible for the surprise. On their very first date, Jordan had shown up at her doorstep with a single white rose. He’d explained to her later on that night the meaning of the color of the flower. The white rose signified a new beginning. She plucked the card from the silver tray and opened it. “Enjoy the champagne and chocolates to celebrate your achievements. Congratulations. Jordan.” She felt herself grinning from ear to ear. When was the last time someone had surprised her with sweets, and her favorite bottle of champagne? She couldn’t really remember. After peeling the foil wrapper from one of the chocolates, she savored it like a kid in a candy store. The creamy filling melted in her mouth, and she pressed her lips together in delight. Too bad she was supposed to be on a diet. Grabbing the champagne bottle and opener, she plopped down on the plush queen-size bed. She paused just before popping the cork. Leaning over to the nightstand, she picked up the receiver on the phone and dialed Jordan’s room number. The phone rang several times before the prerecorded hotel answering service came on. Mia replaced the receiver on its hook. Who really answered hotel phones anyway? She got up and dug through her suitcase for something other than a flimsy nightgown.

“I can’t believe I’m actually doing this,” she mumbled to herself as she pulled on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. She shoved the champagne bottle in her handbag, took one last look in the mirror, and headed out of the door. It took her less than five minutes to take the elevator down to Jordan’s floor. Halfway to his door, her hands started shaking and her feet seemed to wobble in her pumps. Surely she acted on pure impulse, because had she thought this through, she would have been huddled under the covers and sipping on her champagne alone. She swallowed her hesitation and rapped on the door. There was still time to turn back around. She’d knocked so lightly there was no way he could have heard it if he was inside. Once more, she knocked, louder this time. As soon as she thought about leaving, she heard the locks rattle from inside. On the other side, Jordan stood naked from the waist up. His chiseled chest was slightly wet, and the towel wrapped around his waist barely covered the patch of hair trailing down his abdomen. She bit her bottom lip as her eyes trailed up his tanned torso. There was a toothbrush in one hand, and he held the door handle in the other hand. When she met his gaze, he grinned at her. A hint of foam from the toothpaste smudged the corner of his mouth and his chin. Mia laughed. “You’ve got toothpaste all over your face.” He chuckled. “Come in.” The scent of cologne engulfed her as she walked into his room. There was still a faint mist of after shower as steam flowed from the bathroom into the room. The water was still running in the shower stall. “Seems I caught you at a bad time.” Her gaze swept over his chest again, and the scorpion tattoo on his upper right arm. They’d both been in Miami Beach on spring break when they’d acted on sheer impulse and got tattoos together. She’d chosen her own zodiac symbol, the crab, and had it designed on the outside of her leg just above her right ankle. “No you didn’t.” He took her bag and placed it on a coffee table, and then motioned toward to the two-seater couch with his free hand. “Have a seat. The bed is comfy, though, and there’s a flat screen TV in front of it.” 27

He walked over to the night stand and handed her the remote. “I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.” After Jordan retreated to the bathroom, she took the remote and sat at the foot of his bed. The TV was already tuned to an HBO channel. An action movie she couldn’t remember the name of but swore she’d already seen played on the screen. By the time Jordan made it out of the bathroom, she was already engrossed in the movie. She kicked her heels off, curled her legs up under her, and barely noticed he’d been finished. “Oh, yeah, Hitman. One of my favorites.” He plopped down on the bed next to her. Laying out on the bed, he propped his elbow up and rested his chin on one palm. She snapped her fingers. “That’s the name of it. It’s getting really good. Plus Mr. Forty-seven is really hot.” “Oh, yeah.” He turned on his side, and grinned up at her. “Hotter than me?” Mia smiled at him coyly, scooted off the bed, and pulled the champagne bottle from her hand bag. “I didn’t want to celebrate alone.” He nodded. “Celebrating by yourself isn’t fun at all.” “Thanks, by the way.” Laying out next to him, she handed him the bottle and bottle opener. She dropped her forehead in her hand. “Shoot, I forgot the glasses on the cart.” “No problem.” He screwed the opener on the wooden cork. “We can celebrate just like old times.” The sound of a pop and sizzle filled the room, and some foam flowed down the neck of the bottle over his hand. He offered her the bottle. “Do you mean drink from the bottle?” She scrunched up her nose. “Either that or I can call housekeeping and wait while they bring glasses. Come on, don’t you remember how we used to have fun?” Oh, yes, she remembered. But, they were younger back then. Not much younger, but certainly she was a changed woman from a few years ago. She couldn’t even remember the last time she went to a good party and had an

all-nighter. The days of her adolescent carefree youth were over. Of course, that didn’t mean she couldn’t have a little fun once in a while. Mia tipped the rim against her lips and took a sip. She swallowed the chilled smooth champagne, and then handed the bottle to him. He took a long sip, and she watched the Adam’s apple bob in his throat as he swallowed. “Excellent.” She rolled over on her back. “This moving and new position thing feels like the biggest decision in my life ever.” Sliding her arms under her head, she took a deep breath. “I just hope it’s the right one, and that I’m happy in the long run.” “If I can remember, it’s the job you’ve always wanted. You’re making the decision to accept what you want.” “It just came so quickly. I wish I had more time. I mean, I wanted to finish my studies and all.” “You’re nearly finished. You only have a few months left, so don’t underestimate yourself.” She turned her head to peer into his deep brown eyes. “I’ll be closer to the most aggravating family in the world, that’s for sure.” He laughed. “No one’s family is more aggravating than mine. I think all my relatives have an inside agenda to murder each other, cold-blooded murder.” With all the money, businesses, and investments attached to the Bell family name, Jordan’s family was always arguing over this and that. They especially tried to gain control of anything that would increase their net worth. The one time Jordan had invited her over to a Christmas dinner, she couldn’t believe the amount of hatred and jealousy in the room. It was all about money and fame to them. Who had the most of it, whose child had just graduated with honors, who’d just bought a home near the Hamptons… “I’ve revolted enough against my parents. I realized this past year that they only want what’s best for me, not to control or run my life.” Jordan’s eyes roamed away from her face. “Right. They want what’s best for you.” “I hope everything goes as planned on moving day.” 29

“You really are moving, aren’t you?” “Yes, Jordan.” She sighed. “I really am.” She took the bottle from him and took a long sip. “I don’t think I want you to leave.” There was actually a hint of sadness in his voice. “I’ll always have ties to that city. Plus, Angel doesn’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon. I’ll always visit.” He frowned. “A visit here and there may be enough for Angel, but it’s not enough for me.” She swallowed. “Why are you talking like that, Jordan? We haven’t been together-together in months.” “You were always here, at the office, or somewhere where I could see you. I can’t stand the fact that you’ll be hundreds of miles away.” “Come on, Jordan. When I’m gone, you’ll forget about me like an old wound.” “No, Mia.” He shook his head. “You mean more to me than you’ll ever know. Why you push me so far away is a mystery to me.” “You know why.” She glared at him through the slits of her eyes. “Your friends and family tried to ruin our relationship from the beginning. They don’t want you with me. Period.” “It’s none of their business.” “Well, they were all up in our business. They knew more about me than I wanted them to know. Apparently, I wasn’t good enough for you. Even your best friend thought so.” He grabbed her hand and squeezed gently. “It doesn’t matter what they think.” She tried not to blink, worrying that the swell of tears would flow down her face. “Why was it that you let them ruin us and what we had? They’d say stuff behind our backs at those stupid little parties you took me to and you’d say nothing.” “I didn’t know it affected you.” “How could you not know?” She dropped her gaze to stare at the down comforter. 30

“I’m sorry.” He pressed his lips together. “I can’t believe we’re not together because of outside influence. Don’t you think it hurt me too, the way you dumped me?” Shaking her head, she gulped the lump in her throat. “It was best for both of us to call it quits.” “You waited weeks to tell me that you’d gotten engaged to the man that your parents had chosen for you.” “I didn’t think you would care. The sex was all that mattered in the beginning, and in the end, to you.” “You’re wrong, Mia. Sex was not all that mattered to me.” “Then why was it that I ended up in your bed several times after I told you we couldn’t do it anymore? I cheated on my fiancé and ended our engagement for you, Jordan.” “I couldn’t resist you, you know th—” “Apparently, you couldn’t resist me and the blonde you fucked at your best friend’s house party either.” Jordan’s eyebrows furrowed together. “You didn’t think I knew about her, did you?” She shoved the champagne bottle at him. “Is this why you cut me off?” “What do you think? I’m not your little strumpet, and I play second fiddle to no one.” She rolled to the edge of the bed and sprang to her feet. He was behind her in seconds, and caught both of her arms in his before she could grab her hand bag. “Mia!” She jerked against his hold. “Mia, stop and listen.” “I shouldn’t have come. This is all too much for me.” “It had been weeks and weeks, and you didn’t call me.” He embraced her in his arms, still holding her hands hostage to his chest. “So, you went on with your life?” He didn’t answer. Only the sounds of their exasperated breathing coupled with the noise from the TV. “It goes to show…” She tried to shrug out of his arms again. “When I’m gone next week, you’ll move on with your life.” 31

“The only life I wanted was with you,” he whispered, nuzzling against her neck. “Back then, you didn’t care. You’ve just only realized this when it’s too damn late.” “It’s not too late.” He dropped her arms, and they hung at her sides. “You hurt me, too, Mia. The flowers and gift that I sent to you were returned to my doorstep. When I got home, they were on my freaking doorstep. I thought you’d shut me out then.” “What flowers?” “I sent you roses. The big vase of yellow flowers and the seashell we found when we vacationed on Miami Beach together.” “Those were from you?” She remembered the moment like yesterday. It’d been days after she’d broken off the engagement with Alan. Her mother had answered the door, and brought back the flowers and box and set them on the table as she ate breakfast. “Looks like Alan sent you a present. You should rethink your decision,” her mother had said. After she’d confessed that she was in love with another man, Alan had called her every degrading name in the book. Had even hunted her down while she was out with her friends shopping, and called her a slut in front of all of them and everyone in The Gap that day. She was mortified. She ran down the flower delivery truck with the flowers and little box, and ordered that he return to sender. “I didn’t know.” Mia followed Jordan to the other side of the room. “I didn’t even open it. I thought they were from Alan.” “I’ll never be like Alan. I didn’t grow up with my birth mother, and I don’t know how to cook like him or plan romantic outings like he did.” His fists were balled at his sides, and she placed her palm on the small of his back. “Stop it. You don’t compare to Alan.” “Exactly.” “That’s not what I meant.” She moved to stand in front of him. “It was always you that I wanted, not Alan.”

She thought she saw a slight smirk on his face before he lifted her chin and kissed her. Their lips molded together and she brought her arms up to wrap around his back. She just couldn’t get enough of him as their tongues entwined in a frenzied dance. When they pulled apart to catch their breath, the tingling feeling lingered on her lips. “No matter what you say, Mia, I’ve always been in love with you.” He slid his hands down her waist and kneaded her hips. “You love the sex.” She stepped in closer to him. “More than the sex, but the sex is out of this world.” His palms moved to massage her ass. “Isn’t that what you want…and need? Mia’s body shivered in acceptance. “Yes.” “Then let me make love to you. Let me show you exactly why we belong in each other’s arms always. He lifted her into his arms and carried her over to the bed, where he laid her in the center of it. Jordan started with her feet, taking them in his hands and massaging them with his palms and fingers. He traced the outline of her tattoo, and then kissed her on both ankles. Reaching up, he unbuttoned her jeans. She lifted her hips just enough to help him slide them off her legs. When he touched his fingertips to her thighs, she gasped. She moaned when his fingers were replaced with his lips. Hot breaths trailed all over her skin. Her body vibrated with need and want. He came to rest his lips between the apex of her thighs. His warm breath passed right through her panties. Tracing the lace outline of them, he looked at her with determination and lust. He moved up closer on the bed, causing her to spread her legs for him. Her clit pulsed when he rubbed it through the fabric. She licked her suddenly dry lips, and then bit into the inside of her cheek to prevent from moaning out loud. His wet tongue came to dip inside her belly button, and he drew in a deep, ragged breath. “You smell delicious.” Jordan lifted her shirt, and she assisted him in pulling that over her head. He knelt above her, and studied her for what seemed like forever. Her body

craved everything he could give her. And she knew without a doubt that he could give her body what it needed. Her belly quivered under his roving fingers. This time when, he traced the lace outlining her bra, she reached behind her and unhooked it. He grinned and pulled the material away from her, revealing her breasts to his inspection. Her nipples puckered tightly under his gaze. Heat enveloped her as he dipped his head to tease a nipple with the tip of his tongue. Her clit ached in agony. He took wet slurps, toying with both nipples until they and the little bumps on the areolas were hardened. Her whole body was on fire, and she didn’t realize that his fingers had found their way into her panties. He dragged a finger across her wet slit, as he suckled feverishly on both breasts. “Oh, my gosh.” Her words rushed out of her mouth. Tension built inside of her to add to all the pent up orgasms that she’d denied herself for months. Jordan teased her with his fingers, only lightly touching her clit. He drew attention away from her breast to kiss the delicate skin just above her collar bone, where he drew in another deep breath. The cold tip of his tongue touched the sensitive skin behind her ears. “You still wear the same perfume.” All the while, the erection behind his flannel pants brushed against her. It was a nice hint of what was in store, but she needed to feel the real thing. She pushed her hands down into the waistband of the pants and he groaned. She wrapped her fingers around the girth of him. His breath hitched sharply. She played with the head of his dick, using his fingers, teasing him just the way he had teased her. Precome escaped the slit, and she used it to moisten the head. Licking her lips, she closed her eyes and remembered how soft he felt against her tongue and how he filled up her pussy and mouth each time he used to fuck her. “Take them off,” she ordered. “My feisty woman.” He grinned as he obliged her request. “I like that.” His dick sprang free of the pants as he pulled them down and kicked them to the floor. His erection was big and thick enough to please her to a very nice orgasm. Just like she remembered. And she desperately needed that 34

orgasm. He took off her panties in a hurry, and then pushed his shoulders against the backs of her knees. His eyes feasted on her pussy just before his tongue dipped between the folds to taste. Mia clenched her teeth and held back a cry of pleasure. Her body arched upward off the bed when he sucked her clit into his mouth, rolling it around with his tongue. He flicked her clit gently, inducing a maddening urge to explode like an inferno. He slid his tongue into her, and she grabbed at the sheets on the bed. He ravaged her with his mouth, and breathless moans escaped her. She rode the wave of ecstasy as he ate her pussy like it was a delightful dessert. He paid equal attention to her aching bud of desire, grabbing her ass and burying his lips between the folds of her sex. She dug her toes into the sheets as her desire and tension rose, and her orgasm rushed through her. Her body shook, her legs trembled against his shoulders, and her thighs tightened against his ears. He let go of her clit only when her panting slowed. Jordan lifted his head and chuckled deeply. “I love when you do that.” He was fully erect and distended from the patch of brown hair covering his groin. She lifted herself up on her elbow and met his lips. As they kissed, she tasted herself. Once again, she wrapped her fingers around his dick, gently pumping him. He hardened even more against her palm. “I can’t wait any longer.” He tore open the foil wrapper and handed her the condom. She rolled it down the length of him until her hands came to brush against his balls. She made eye contact with him and gripped his sac into her palm. They tightened against her touch. “Fuck, Mia. Now, please.” He switched position so that his back was on the bed, and he brought her over his body to straddle him. His erection stood straight up, ready for her as he always was. She lifted her hips and positioned herself over him. Her canal stretched to accommodate the girth of him. His hands encompassed her hips, and she slid down further, burying his dick to the hilt. She started to move up and down on top of him, slowly at first. Just the way he liked it. 35

“Oh, yes…” He groaned. Her pussy milked him, clenching and unclenching on its own accord. His irises seemed to swirl with pleasure. He grabbed her hips and tilted her slightly forward, pumping into her. Before long, he’d increased the speed and force. He drove up into her, and she met his thrusts. With each thrust, his rod brushed her clit and she anticipated a release all over again. Release was waiting there, on the edge, like words unspoken on the tip of a tongue. It was only a matter of time before she burst with pleasure. He groaned between clenched teeth. As always, he seemed to hold back his release. His forehead creased in concentration. The very sight of him in pleasure sent her over the edge, and her orgasm barreled through her. His release was not far behind. He gripped her ass tighter and lifted his hips off the bed. He called out her name as he came, and his body vibrated beneath her. When they were both complete, they rested side by side in each other’s arms. Too breathless to speak, she closed her eyes and pressed her ears closer to his chest to listen to his rapid heartbeat.

Chapter Seven Mia dropped the last of her suitcases inside her condo. It had only been a few days ago that she wanted the trip to end, but she’d give anything now to relive the last several days over again. She had to face reality. It was time to get back to work, and she had packing to do. “I’d love to stay with you tonight.” Jordan took her hand in his and squeezed it. Mia leaned against the doorframe of her condo. “We both have to work tomorrow, Jordan. And your cab is waiting downstairs.” “I had a fabulous time in California.” Jordan smiled. “Thanks for coming after all.” Just thinking about the nights they’d shared in each other’s hotel rooms brought a rush of warmth through her body. It was a wonder how they got up each morning to attend the workshops and meetings on the agenda. She’d all but abandoned her morning exercise routine. Heck, her legs and entire body were sore enough from all the fucking they’d done the past three nights. It was the best three nights she’d had in a long time. “See you tomorrow, Jordan.” “Wait.” He grabbed her arm just as she backed into her home. “I wanted to ask you…where will you be living when you move back home?” “Why that question now?” She chuckled. “Everything was so sudden that I haven’t even found a place yet. So, I’m staying in my parents’ basement until I can buy a place.” He nodded. “Yeah, good idea.” Before she made another move to withdraw into her condo, he lifted her chin so that their lips met, and he gave her a long, lingering kiss. “Hopefully, there will be more of this before you leave.” “Hopefully,” she teased. “And even after you leave…?” He lifted an eyebrow. “Too much of a good thing could be bad.” “We’ll see,” he whispered. She stepped back into her condo and closed the door. 37

**** As she pulled into her parents’ driveway, there were already a few unfamiliar cars there. When she parked her car, her dad rushed out to greet her. He helped her out of the car, and then gave her a big bear hug. “Sweetie.” “Gosh, Dad. You act like you haven’t seen me in years.” “It’s been two months. That’s long enough without seeing my little girl.” He stood back and looked at her. “Have you been eating?” She huffed. “Dad, please.” She moved toward her trunk, where he helped her with her luggage. “So, are you ready to start fresh and early Monday morning?” She took a sideways glance at him, and saw that he was smirking. “Very funny, Dad. I’m not scheduled to start until another week. I bet they have a pile of work waiting for me when I start.” “You’ll inherit a few of my clients, but I told them what you said about starting fresh with your own set of clients.” “Right.” She nodded. “Thanks.” “We’ve got guests.” Her dad took a suitcase from her and they started toward the house. “Some will be staying for the party.” “What party?” “We’re having a welcome home dinner for you tonight.” She wasn’t sure if she was up to celebrating with a crowd tonight, but there was no doubt that her parents were proud of her. “Cool.” “I talked to Terrence last week, but he won’t be able to make it back home for another month.” Mia shrugged. “I figured as much. I’m glad he’s happy, though. I remember when he didn’t know what kind of career he wanted for himself.” “Oh, yeah. I also invited Alan, too. He stopped by to visit the other day.” “Dad.” She stopped on the walkway to scowl at him. “How could you invite my ex to my welcome home dinner party?” 38

He frowned. “I thought you’d want that. You need a familiar face to reacquaint you with this town, don’t you?” “No, I don’t,” she said bluntly. “Alan told me about the date you and he had planned, and that you had to leave for a business trip at the last minute. I figured this would give you guys another chance to reconnect.” Her eyes widened in disbelief. Ugh! She could strangle Alan. When would he get the hint and leave her alone? “Let’s get this straight, Dad. Alan and I don’t mix. I don’t know what I saw in him from the beginning.” “Come on. Why would you say something like that?” “And it wasn’t a date. He asked me to go to a restaurant with him, and I felt sorry for him and said yes. Now you and he have got this whole thing all twisted.” Mia continued up the walkway. “I can’t believe this.” “I know you’re angry with him, but everything will be okay. You’ll see. No worries.” What her dad didn’t know was that there was no hope for her and Alan ever again. Their relationship had been one that her parents had encouraged. She’d never been content with him. She and Jordan’s frequent conquests during that time was not the reason she’d fallen out of love with Alan, because she’d never ever been in love with Alan. Loved him, yes, but not the type of unconditional love that existed in a relationship. It was Jordan’s love that made her realize what a real relationship could be, but Jordan wasn’t serious. He’d let too many people dictate what was good and what wasn’t good for him. His family cared about money, and if someone wasn’t born with it, then he or she was worth nothing in their minds. Ever since those steamy nights in Cali, she and Jordan hadn’t even kissed each other. He’d tried, but she wasn’t willing to put herself through further separation anxiety by becoming attached to something she couldn’t have forever. And because of this, she’d left the city a day early without saying goodbye to Jordan as she’d originally promised.

Chapter Eight Her mom’s Devil’s Food cake was the best, and she was on her third piece of it. The upside to coming back home was being a hop, skip, and jump away from a home-cooked meal when she wanted it. Her thighs would thank her for it. Of course, the downside was that she’d have to increase her duration on the elliptical. “Are you all settled in at the new company?” her aunt Gloria asked as they all sat in the family room eating dessert. “I don’t start for another week, and no, I’m not settled yet.” “We’re so proud of you and your dad. When Michael broke the news to us that he was retiring, we were in shock. He’s been so dedicated to that job.” Everyone had known her dad to be a hard worker. Ironically, the perfectionist in him had also passed down to her. Her phone buzzed on her hip, and she excused herself. Anything to be able to take a break from being the center of attention. She arrived home before nine this morning, and hadn’t had the privilege of a break or nap yet with all the visitors. On her way to the kitchen to grab a glass of water, she read through the text message on the screen. Meet me at 1152 Riverview Valley. I’ll wait until you get here. Jordan. “What the heck?” She flipped through her contacts and found his cell number. The phone rang numerous times before he answered. “Jordan? Is that you?” “Yes.” “What’s going on?” She moved from the kitchen into the library where it was quieter. “Do as the text says and you’ll find out.” “Jordan, wh—” He’d hung up on her. What was he doing in town? She returned to the kitchen where her mother was talking to her aunt in the kitchen. “Mom, something came up and I have to run out. I’ll be back.” “Where to?” 40

“An old friend.” She grabbed her keys off the hook on the wall. “You know that Alan and his parents were staying over for drinks, right?” her mom called after her. No, she didn’t know. Everyone was making plans for her and Alan. Plans that she had no intention of following through on. “Well, I won’t be able to make it. Sorry.” She left before her mom could argue with her. The GPS registered the address as soon as she backed out of the garage. According to it, she would get there in forty-five minutes. Shit! What did Jordan want, and why did she care? Forty-five minutes seemed like an eternity and a day. By the time she made it to the side of the town where the address was located, it was pouring down rain outside. The ritzy-looking subdivision she turned in to confused her all the more, but she kept on driving. She strained her eyes, trying to see the mailbox numbers through the storm. Good thing there was still a couple hours left of daylight. She would have been shit out of luck. Finally, she came to a cul-de-sac. It was the last home in the subdivision. There was a stone wall surrounding the property, but the gate was open. She checked her text message again, confirming that this was the place. She drove through the gate and up a circular driveway. In the middle was a tall, stone structure amid tall shrubs. Jordan’s white Maserati was sitting out front. Mia stopped the car and got out. Didn’t even bother to grab her umbrella from the back seat. His mysterious text had her on edge. By the time she reached the door, her black cocktail dress was soaking wet. What if Jordan didn’t answer? Maybe that wasn’t his car in the driveway. Maybe this wasn’t the right house. She rang the doorbell with shaky fingers. Jordan answered the door, and he blinked several times at her. No doubt taking in her disheveled appearance. “You’re soaking wet, Mia.” He pulled her inside. The house was empty, yet striking in interior detail. The walls were bare. No furniture, no art work. Nothing. It was as if no one lived there. “Jordan, what is this?” 41

“Do you like it?” “It’s beautiful.” She glanced up at the circular staircase leading to the second floor. Her eyes danced over the room, taking in the intricate design on the ceiling, and the crafty crown moulding in the room they stood in. “What are you doing here?” “I drove up this morning.” “So did I.” “I know.” He grabbed her hand. “I have something to show you.” Mia followed him through the house. Her eyes widened with surprise as she took in the splendid details of the home. Her heels clicked against the hardwood floors as he guided her. Finally, they came to what was the kitchen. Her mouth immediately opened in surprise. The kitchen was just as magnificent as the home itself. A cook’s kitchen. One that she could spend hours cooking in. “You once told me that you wanted a chef’s kitchen.” “Jordan, answer me.” She swallowed. “What is this?” He shrugged. “A home.” “Stop playing with me. Why did you bring me here?” She broke free of his grip and ran her hands across the marble countertops. “I wanted to surprise you.” She turned around to glare at him, and smiled. “Well, damn it, I’m surprised.” “Good.” He cleared his throat. “So, umm…how was your drive?” “Jordan, cut the bullshit talk. What are you doing here?” “Okay, okay. Let’s sit down and I’ll tell you.” “Where?” She lifted her palms upward in question and giggled. “On the floor?” He nervously scratched the back of his head. “I didn’t think about that.” Jordan took her by the waist and lifted her up on the island in the center of the kitchen. He kissed her softly and she didn’t protest. In fact, kissing him made her realize how much she missed it. “I want to be with you, Mia.”

“Okay, but did you have to go through all this?” She waved her hand over the kitchen. “Yes.” He nodded. “It’s rather difficult to get your attention.” “I don’t think a long distance relationship would work.” “There won’t be a long distance relationship. We’ll always be together.” He stuffed his hand in his pants pocket and pulled out a seashell. “I told you. I’ve already made up my mind. I’m not going back.” “You don’t have to go back.” He dropped the seashell into her palm. “Then how will we be together always?” She turned the shell over in her palm. It was the seashell they’d found on the beach. “I’m sorry. I should have opened the box and read the card. I didn’t know.” “No time for apologies now.” He touched her chin and glanced into her eyes. “If you lift a seashell to your ear, you can hear the ocean.” He lifted the seashell to her ear. She closed her eyes and listed to the whooshing sound inside. When the sound ceased, she opened her eyes to find Jordan staring at her intently. “This seashell is special. It has always been.” He shook the shell, and something inside made a clanking noise. “For inside, is my promise of love.” He placed it in her palm again. Her heartbeat increased, and it was almost as loud as the sound of the ocean had been. “Jordan…” “Tides come and go…” He continued, “But my heart will always remain with you.” Mia turned the seashell over, and a ring dropped out in the palm of her hand. She gasped. Its luster sparkled even under the dull light. The diamond was nearly as big as the ring itself. “I want to bring joy in your life every day. Mia, will you be my wife?” Her heart filled with warmth, and she searched his face for any hint of bullshit. Oddly enough, she didn’t find any. He was serious. Her lips broke out into a smile before she could stop it. “Yes,” she whispered. His eyes brightened, and she repeated her acceptance. “Yes, Jordan. I’ll be your wife.”

As he slipped the ring on her finger, he took her lips in a deep kiss. “Oh, Mia, do you know how long I’ve waited to hear you say those words?” “Since this morning?” He laughed deeply. “No.” He shook his head and took a card out of his pocket. “This was what you returned to me almost a year ago. The card with the poem about the seashell…and the ring.” “Jordan…” She’d returned the card with the marriage proposal on it. How could she have done that? She felt ashamed for being so careless. “I’m sorry.” “No time for apologies, remember?” He wiped at the tears on her face. “All we should think about now is the future.” She nodded. Of course. A future with the man she’d always wanted. “Our future starts here. Right here in our house.” “Really? Our house?” “I may be partner at my firm, but I can work from anywhere I want.” He winked. “The selling agent is waiting for my decision. If you like it, I’ll buy it.” “Are you kidding?” She squealed. “I love it!” “I thought you would.” She’d finally accepted that Jordan was the only man for her. No one else knew her the way he did. It was time to forget about what others said. Jordan was her man, and she’d get to claim him on their wedding day. Their wedding day. She could now happily plan a wedding. A marriage that she wanted with all her heart. “One more thing, Jordan.” “Anything.” “Take me upstairs. To our room.” Jordan grinned. “I thought you’d never ask.” He swooped her up, carried her up the long spiral staircase, and down the hall into a room. “I’ve had a long, stressful day, and you know what I’d love right now?” She arched her eyebrow at him. “Just say the words.”

She walked farther into the room, unzipped her cocktail dress, and let the wet garment fall to the floor. Slowly, she walked toward the window seat and turned around to face him. Jordan followed her without a word, coming to stand directly in front of her. He kissed her shoulder, eased the bra strap down, and then moved to the other shoulder to do the same. She reached behind her to unhook it and let it fall to the floor. Sliding her fingers around his neck, she brought her lips to his for a kiss. She fumbled with the buttons on his shirt, pressing kisses into his chest as she went. He helped her undo his belt and to open his fly. Taking a seat on the window bench, she pulled him closer. She kneaded his erection through his boxers before dipping her hand inside to pull him out. “Mia, what are you doing?” “Sssh, just enjoy.” She took his dick into her mouth, just the head at first. Her mouth widened to take his width. He groaned and hardened against her tongue. Pulling him out, she traced the sensitive slit with her tongue to taste the precum. Sliding her tongue up and down his shaft, she glanced up at his face. He watched the show from above, face clenched in pleasure. She traced the underside of his dick with her tongue, then took him into her mouth again. Grabbing his thighs, she encouraged him to pump inside of her. He moved slowly, going in deeper, and hitting the back of her throat and palate. His legs began to shake as his orgasm drew near. Suddenly, he pulled out of her mouth. He pulled her up from her sitting position. “Bend over.” Mia smiled, and did as he instructed. She pressed her ass into his stiff erection. A hot rush of cream flooded her pussy as he traced the outline of her panties near the apex of her thighs. Hot breath fanned against her backside, followed by a wet sweep of his tongue. She hissed as he kneaded her ass. He pulled her panties aside, exposing her, and dipped several fingers into her. “You’re so wet and ready.” “Fuck me now, Jordan.” Her pussy ached to be pleased.

Jordan slid into her, holding her panties by the strap. She bit into her lips as he filled her up. He began pumping inside of her, burying himself deep within her pussy. She moaned uncontrollably, and her cries echoed throughout the empty room. His balls slapped against her pussy and clit. Heat flooded her entire body and her legs turned to jelly when her orgasm slammed through her. Jordan pounded her even harder. Intense, driving strokes that prolonged the orgasm. Her panties tore as he rode her, and he tossed them aside. This time, he gripped her hips, pulling her ass back into his groin. His release came forcefully, and his hot seed shot up inside her. He cried out in pleasure, slowing his tempo as semen pulsed from him into her. With their appetites sated, he sat on the bench and dragged her onto his lap. He smiled, and his eyes seemed to brighten. “You make me the happiest man on earth.” It all made sense now. She felt secure in his arms because in his arms was where she’d always belonged.
