Chapter One It had been a month since she’d lost Jonah, but it still felt like yesterday. When the pack had attacked him, she’d been heartbroken, knowing that it wouldn’t end well. No one could go up against Hunter and win, except for his brother Logan. Jonah hadn’t stood a chance. And now, she found herself back in the Fairy kingdom, courtesy of Prince Rhys. Granted, he’d been following Jonah’s orders by taking her away from the fight, and getting her away from the other werewolves, but she still felt like she’d abandoned him by coming here. At least Rhys had allowed her to bring Jonah to Faeryland and bury him on the palace grounds. Alex took Rhys’s hand in hers and laced their fingers together. “Thank you for being so patient with me this past month. Jonah made me promise not to mourn him, but I think I needed to, at least a little.” “If you need more time…”
She shook her head. “No, it’s time for me to move on. It’s what he would want.” “There are some things we need to discuss. I’ve held off, but maybe now is the right time.” “To talk about what?” “I know you spent time in Faeryland before, but there’s still a lot you don’t understand about our culture and laws. There’s one in particular we need to discuss.” “Rhys…” “Let’s go sit in the rose garden. I have a feeling you’ll need to be seated for this talk.” Alex followed him in curiosity. After they’d sat on a stone chair, she leaned forward and rested her arms on the small table. Rhys stretched out his long legs and folded his arms over his chest. She calmly watched him, waiting for him to start talking. When silence still reigned moments later, she sighed. “Whatever it is, just tell me, Rhys.”
“It isn’t that simple. I guess I should start with your guards.” “Yes. Why do I have guards when I didn’t need any before?” “For one, I don’t trust the wolf pack. If they find a way in to Faeryland like before, they could try to abduct you.” “Okay, first of all, I don’t think two wolves can make a pack. And honestly, Hunter only saw me once. Why would he try to find me? Let’s not forget how much time has passed there already.” “Alex, he killed your husband. I think it’s safe to say that he wants you as his mate. He doesn’t know that time moves differently here. It’s possible he’s still searching for you.” “Just use the scrying mirror to see.” He nodded. “Fine. I’ll do that.” “And the other reason?”
“I don’t trust Kieran. He wasn’t happy that you got away, despite his act at the end of your stay. My brother can be ruthless when he wants to be. All faeries can, myself included.” “He said he was still interested, but I can’t see him doing anything underhanded.” He lifted a brow. “Really? He’s used magic on you before, abducted you, but you don’t think he’d play unfairly?” “That was different.” “You’re right. It’s worse this time.” “How is it worse?” Rhys rubbed the back of his neck. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but last time you were already pregnant when you came here, and by a werewolf at that. This time, you’ll be pregnant with the heir to Fairyland. Kieran isn’t married, which means he’ll try to steal you from me.” A chill settled over Alex. “In other words, he would want your wife no matter who she was, just to have the heir to the kingdom.”
“Probably, but my wife isn’t just anyone. I think he really did care about you, Alex. It’s going to make him more driven in his goal to obtain you as his bride.” She looked out over the garden, her thoughts jumbled. “So it’s a race to see who can bed me and impregnate me. Is that it? I’m a prize cow?” Rhys stood and pulled her into his arms. “Alex, that is not what our marriage is about. Father gave his permission for me to marry you while you were in the human world, and I may have tricked you and for that I’m sorry, but I genuinely wanted you as my wife. The moment I saw you, I knew you were meant to be mine.” “For how long? Until you get tired of me and decide to take a mistress?” He caressed her cheek. “I’ll never take another woman to my bed as long as there is breath in your lungs. I swear it to you.”
“Rhys, you can’t know what you’ll do in a hundred years. For that matter, I’m just human. I may be dead in less time than that, and old and ugly long before I die.” He grinned. “You’ll age the way I age, and you’ll live for hundreds of years my princess. And yes, I can make such a vow, because I’ve never seen a woman who could equal you in beauty and spirit.” “Rhys, I…” He silenced her with a kiss. *** Starting her life as Rhys’s wife wasn’t a hardship, but she felt guilty. He’d made it a point to touch her in some small way throughout the day, and she’d enjoyed it. Alex tried to reason with herself. She was doing what Jonah had asked; he would want her to be happy. And yet, with every touch, the pleasure it brought her made her feel as if she were doing something wrong. Then there was the matter of their discussion that morning. He’d said he cared about her, but he didn’t even know her, not
really. So how could she believe he was with her for reasons other than creating an heir to their kingdom? She still didn’t see what was so special about her. Why couldn’t the princes just marry a faery and leave her out of it? Maybe she could just go home. It had been over two years in her world. There was no way Hunter was looking for her. If things were going to happen in a similar order to before, Hunter would still be single. But that didn’t mean he’d want her after all this time. There was only one way to find out. Well, technically, there were two ways. She could find a scrying mirror and peek into the lives of the werewolves and her friends or she could step through the portal to check on them. If she got into trouble at home, she knew Rhys would come find her. Of course, she’d have to lose her guards first. The mirror was definitely easier, but she didn’t know who Rhys had borrowed one from. She could always travel to the other
palace and use Maya’s, but she didn’t think Rhys would like that either. So who was worse? Hunter or Kieran? She wanted to feel comfortable with her life. She hadn’t had that in so long Alex wasn’t sure she’d recognize it. She’d gotten close when she was with Jonah, but it hadn’t lasted long enough. If she could have a normal life again, she’d pay anything. To go back to being ignorant of werewolves and faeries sounded wonderful, even if it meant losing her memories of Jonah. At first, she’d thought it was cool, but now that they’d wrecked her life she wanted to send them back into her books and imagination. She wanted to live in a world where such creatures didn’t exist in real life. Making her decision, she slipped out of the palace and quickly walked through the city. She glanced behind her several times and didn’t notice anyone following her, but that didn’t mean her guards weren’t there. Entering the forest, she made her way to the other palace. Along the way, she spied the magical tree Kieran
had taken her to, and unable to help herself, she stepped inside the opening.
Chapter Two Alex stood in front of the portal and wondered if it worked the same way the other one did. She pressed her hand against the cool surface, closed her eyes and concentrated. A moment later, the portal began to glow. She stepped back and waited to see what would happen. Michael came through the portal with a bemused expression. “Alex, what are you doing here?” “I needed to see you.” “Why? Is everything okay?” “You haven’t been watching?” He shook his head. “At first, I tried to give you some privacy, but lately something has been blocking me. I’ve tried to see you, but it’s like I hit a wall or something.” “Jonah’s dead, and somehow, I ended up married to Rhys.” He looked stunned. “I’m sorry, Alex. I had no idea.”
She wrapped her arms around him and rested her head on his chest. “My life has been one catastrophe after another, starting with the night you died. Even going back didn’t change anything. Hunter still wanted me, enough that he killed Jonah for marrying me. And now I’ve discovered that I’ve been married to Rhys since before Jonah died. How screwed up is that?” Michael hugged her tightly. Folding his wings around her, he tipped her chin up, and slowly leaned down to kiss her. His mouth pressed against hers, and she melted into him. His tongue slipped between her lips, and his arms pulled her closer. Feeling his body against hers, tasting him, made her want him more than ever. Being in Michael’s arms was like coming home. When he pulled back, he cupped her cheek. “I know I shouldn’t have done that, but I couldn’t resist.” “I wanted you to kiss me.” She gave him a shy smile. “I wanted you to do more than that.”
He groaned. “You can’t say things like that. It’s hard enough remembering that I shouldn’t kiss you, that I shouldn’t want you like this.” She breathed him in and kissed his chest. “Do you have any idea how many times I’ve wished we could go back to the night of your accident? I’ve thought of the things I would do differently, anything that might save you.” “You have to let it go, Alex.” “I can’t. Don’t you understand? My life is upside down and inside out because I’m supposed to be with you. Things didn’t get crazy until I decided it was time to move on. My life was fine as long as my heart belonged to you and only you.” “What are you saying, Alex?” “If I can’t have you back, then I wish I’d never started dating again. Being alone was better than going through my fiasco with Hunter and Logan, or losing Jonah and being caught in a battle between the faery princes.” His brow furrowed. “Battle?”
“It seems that Kieran wants to steal me from Rhys. When I get pregnant, I’ll be carrying the heir to Faeryland. Rhys insists that isn’t why he wants to be married to me, but he doesn’t know me well enough for it to be for any other reason.” Michael’s arms tightened around her. “I don’t like this.” He narrowed his eyes. “Have you slept with Rhys?” “No. And stop looking at me like that.” “Sorry.” He gave her a sheepish smile. “Old habits and all that. Do you think you can continue to hold him off?” “I don’t know.” “I’m going to do everything in my power to help you. Try to hold both of them at bay until I can come up with something.” He pulled his wings more firmly around her. “Come here as often as possible and call me to you.” She smiled. “I’ll be here every day if I can manage it.” He looked down at her tenderly. “I’ve missed you, Alex, so very much.”
“I’ve missed you, too. I love you, Michael. It’s always been you. No matter how long I live, you’ll always be the other half of me.” He kissed her. “And you’ll always be the other half of me. I’ll love you for all of eternity, Alex.” Tears gathered in her eyes. Being here with Michael made her feel complete. She only felt at peace when she was in his arms. And knowing that he loved her as much as she loved him, that he still felt that connection, made her heart soar. She only wished their love for one another was enough to bring them together again. If she couldn’t have him in her life all the time, she would be content seeing him when she could. It was more than she’d had before coming to Faeryland. “You should go,” he said. “I imagine they’re looking for you.” “I had intended to go to the other palace and see Maya. She has a scrying mirror I wanted to use.” “To what purpose?”
“Rhys thinks Hunter is still searching for me. I wanted to find out.” “I’ll see if I can do a little snooping for you. When you call me again, I should know something. Until then, try to stay safe. It’s hard for me to watch over you while you’re here.” “Because of the faery magic?” He shrugged. “I’m not sure what it is, but I guess that’s possible.” “Maybe it’s part of Rhys’s protection. He’s assigned guards to me. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out he’d put a protection spell on me, too.” “If that’s true, he can probably locate you anytime he wants.” She sighed. “Then I should go. I don’t want anyone to know I’ve been here. It would make it harder to come and see you later.” Michael kissed her once more. “Then go. I promise I’ll see you soon.”
Alex watched as he backed away and disappeared into the portal. She left the tree, making sure no one saw her, and hurried through the forest toward Rhys’s palace. If she were lucky, no one would realize she’d been gone. *** When she stepped inside the palace, Rhys grabbed her arm and hauled her into a private chamber, closing the door behind them. His eyes were blazing with fury and she felt truly afraid. Having never seen him angry before, she didn’t know what to expect. Her arm hurt where he gripped it, and she worried it would leave a mark. “Where have you been?” he demanded. “The guards have searched everywhere for you.” “Obviously not or they would have found me. I went for a walk.” “To see Kieran?” “Of course not,” she said, wrinkling her nose.
He didn’t look like he believed her, but his hand slowly relaxed and he released her. She rubbed the spot he’d been holding and winced. Now that she was free, she took a step away from him. “If you weren’t seeing Kieran, where did you?” “I just wandered around for a while. I needed to be alone to sort things out in my head.” He studied her a moment. “Are you changing your mind about this morning? Do you need more time to mourn Jonah?” “It isn’t that exactly. It’s just… I want to take things slowly. We don’t really know each other. I’d like us to be friends before we become anything more. I think that’s why my relationship with Jonah worked out so well.” “So you aren’t ready to act like my wife,” he stated flatly. “Not yet. I’m sorry, Rhys.” He shook his head. “If we don’t consummate our marriage and begin sharing a bed, Kieran will keep trying to take you from me.”
“You don’t understand, Rhys. I’m not a prize to be won or fought over. I’ll end up with whomever I choose. Kieran can’t ‘take’ me from you because you don’t really have me. We may be married by faery standards, but it’s in name only. You didn’t ask me to marry you, we don’t love each other, we barely even know each other…” “Is that really how you feel?” he asked. She nodded. “We need time to get to know one another.” “And what if I don’t agree? What if I tell you we’re going to start having a real marriage?” “Are you really going to force me? Because that would only make me hate you.” Rhys stepped closer. “Once I touch you, do you honestly think I’d have to force you?” She stiffened her spine. Did he really think that’s all it would take? That just one touch would be enough to make her fall into bed with him? It obviously hadn’t worked today so why would it work any other day? All right, so it might have worked if she
hadn’t seen Michael. But kissing him again after so long had been too wonderful for words. After that, no one could compare. Well, perhaps Jonah, but he was gone. “I won’t pretend indifference, but just a touch isn’t enough to make me fall into your arms. I want more than that, Rhys. Can’t you understand that? I want my next relationship to be based on something more than sex.” Rhys backed her against the wall. “Would that really be so terrible? To have that sort of relationship?” He reached up and caressed her cheek. “I’d be faithful to you. Isn’t that enough? I know it’s more than my brother would give you.” “Rhys, it means a lot to me, it really does. I know that fidelity for a faery is unusual. But I want more. I want friendship, and I want love. I had both with Michael and with Jonah.” She placed her hand on his chest. “Please try to understand. It really means a lot to me.” “I have a busy schedule, Alex. I don’t have time for all of that.” He sighed. “No one knows, but Father hasn’t run the
kingdom in a while. He’s still strong enough to do it, he just doesn’t want to. So for the past fifty years, I’ve had to shoulder the responsibilities of a king without the title. “So if I seem rushed, or push you too hard to make a decision, it isn’t because I’m being insensitive. Well, not intentionally anyway. I would give you all that you ask for and more, if I could.” “I’m sorry, Rhys. I didn’t realize… but that doesn’t change things. You can still spare enough time to have breakfast with me, the occasional dinner, take a walk through the gardens. Besides, it will be good for you to take a break every now and then.” “Did you make Kieran go through this?” he asked. “Things were different with Kieran. But I think if I hadn’t rushed into things, if I’d taken things slowly and made him work at a relationship, then maybe it would have made a difference. If we’d known each other better, he might have trusted me more.” He smirked. “From what I saw, he had a right to be concerned.”
“Nothing happened between me and Jonah until I gave Kieran’s ring back to him. Which I did after discovering him with Fleur, I might add.” “So you wouldn’t have cheated on him if you’d still been married to him? If Kieran hadn’t screwed up, you and Jonah would have remained just friends?” She nodded. “I don’t think so. I think it was only a matter of time before something happened between you two. So maybe instead of me telling you I’ll be faithful, I should be asking if you’ll remain faithful to me.” “Rhys…” “And keep in mind, we’re already married.” Did that mean he knew where she’d been today? Did he know about her kiss with Michael? It made her wonder about the type of protective magic he’d used. If he knew where she went, then that could be a problem. But, surely, if he knew that, he
wouldn’t have asked about Kieran. Maybe she was worrying for nothing. “So I guess that means you’re being faithful to me now? And that you have been since our kiss in the café?” she asked. He cleared his throat and looked away. “Maybe not before you got here…” “And are those faeries still here?” “Of course! If I banished every faery I’d been intimate with, half my kingdom would be gone.” Alex suddenly felt sick. Rhys honestly expected her to be his wife, knowing that the women he’d slept with were still around, that she’d constantly run into them. Maybe Kieran was the better brother after all. He’d at least been faithful to her before they were married. She had no idea what happened with Fleur, but something told her they could have worked it out if they hadn’t been so busy hurting each other. After all, he hadn’t slept with her, or so he’d said. “Alex?” He forced her to look at him. “What’s wrong?”
“This isn’t going to work, Rhys. I can’t live like this. I won’t live like this.” “So that’s it then? Kieran wins?” “I already told you. I’m not a prize for anyone to win.” Rhys pushed away from her. “Then go. Go do whatever you want. I’ll see you at breakfast.” Alex watched him walk out and stared after him in surprise. After the fit he’d thrown, he was letting her run free tonight? Was it a trick? Either way, there was only one person she wanted to see. Well, after she made a stop along the way. She left the palace and wound her way through the gardens. When she stopped in front of the large monument, her hands caressed the name Jonah Emerson. “Oh, Jonah. Things are such a mess. I can’t tell you how much I wish you were here. With you by my side, I can face anything. Since you’ve been gone, everything has fallen apart. I’ve fallen apart. I know I made some promises to you, but I just can’t
keep them. And I think if you knew everything, you wouldn’t ask me to.” She picked a few roses and laid them at the foot of his grave. “There’s something else, something I want more than anything, but I know it’s wrong. I know I should walk away, but I don’t know if I can. It makes me feel alive, whole. More importantly, it makes me feel loved. I only wish I could speak to you to find out if I have your approval.” She grinned. “You probably think I’m crazy. And I know I’m only asking for more heartache, but it feels like the right thing to do. Right for me, that is. It’s going to cause any number of problems, but what else is new right?” Alex stared at the monument a moment. She felt so conflicted. If Jonah were still here, she wouldn’t get to spend time with Michael. And while she truly did love Michael more than anything, she’d been happy with Jonah. She knew if Jonah were still here, she could be happy with him. He’d been her entire world the short time they’d been together.
“I miss you. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished we could go back to that night. I would have told you to get in the car and drive. It wouldn’t have mattered where we ended up as long as we were together. Or we could have gone straight to the portal. Even if we only stayed a week or two, I think it would have been enough time to make a difference in our return. I think Hunter would have left us alone.” She trailed her fingers over the marble. “I love you, Jonah. I hope you know that. No matter what my future may hold, know that you were loved. I guess that’s the most important thing for me to say.” She smiled sadly. “I spent the first week hoping our one day together had resulted in a child, but it didn’t. I know I should have told you before now, but I couldn’t bring myself to say the words out loud.” She took a step back, moving toward the path. “I need to go, but I promise I’ll come back.” Alex hurried down the path and through the gate, leaving the palace grounds. She stopped inside a few shops in case someone was following her, but once she was sure her guards
weren’t around, she left the city and headed into the forest. She glanced over her shoulder once or twice, just to be safe, and then she hastened to the special tree. If Rhys wasn’t going to pay attention to her whereabouts tonight, she might as well see Michael again. She entered the tree and stood in front of the mirror. Taking a deep breath, she placed her hand on the cool glassy surface and closed her eyes. The mirror hummed under her touched and she opened her eyes and stepped back. A bright light filled the tree and then Michael appeared. “Alex, why are you back so soon?” he asked with a frown. “I had a horrible fight with Rhys. He pretty much said he didn’t want to see me tonight.” She blushed. “I think he’s otherwise occupied this evening.” Michael’s eyes narrowed. “You mean he’s cheating on you?” “As far as I’m concerned, Rhys and I aren’t really married.”
The butterfly on her face tingled and then burned. She gasped and touched the area. What did it mean? Did he know what she’d just said? Was it his magic at work? “Your tattoo just vanished,” Michael said in surprise. “What’s going on, Alex?” Her eyes widened. So that’s what had happened. “I think I just divorced Rhys.” Her angel grinned. “Well, that’s the smartest thing you’ve done lately. Aside from marrying Jonah, that is.” “He’ll want to know how I did it. You have to have a witness in order to divorce a faery.” Michael pulled her into his arms and kissed her. “Try not to worry about it. I promise to protect you.” The mirror’s glassy surface returned to normal, looking like an everyday mirror once more. They both looked at it in confusion. When Michael pushed on it, nothing happened. “Michael, what’s going on?”
He shrugged. “I believe I just assigned myself as your protector. It seems the gateway is locked.” She looked up at him in surprise. “Is that even possible? I mean, you’re an angel! Don’t you need to be in heaven or something?” “I’m a low-ranking angel, and apparently expendable. It seems as if I’m yours for as long as you need me.” She cupped his cheek. “Michael, I’ve always needed you. So if that’s the case, you just signed on for a lifelong mission.” Michael kissed her again, something that was becoming a habit. “I can think of worse fates.” “The question is what to do now. Rhys is going to be furious with me when I return. I don’t see him allowing you to stay in the palace.” “Then we go to Kieran. At least when we face Rhys, we’ll both have a roof over our heads.” She nodded. “We’d better start walking. It’s going to be dark soon.”
Michael grinned and lifted her into his arms. Stepping out into the forest, he winked at her. “No point walking when you can fly.” He launched them into the air and Alex squealed, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. She watched the ground rapidly fly by and felt absolutely amazed. Who knew she’d be traveling by Air Angel today? She’d flown with Kieran once, but it paled in comparison. They landed on the palace grounds, startling the guards. Alex smiled at them as she and Michael walked into the palace. They received more than a few curious glances during their search for Kieran. Finally, they found him on one of the verandas. “Alexandra!” Kieran smiled. “And Michael? I have to say I’m curious about your visit.” He eyed Alex critically, his gaze focusing on the place by her eyes were Rhys’s mark had been. “I’m most especially curious as to how you’ve become unattached since last we met.”
“It’s a long story. I actually haven’t seen Rhys since renouncing our marriage.” Kieran looked surprised. “So we can expect my brother soon?” “He won’t notice I’m missing until breakfast. He’s too busy being an ass tonight to spare me a thought.” Kieran winced. “Sorry about that. And Michael is here because… you needed an angel on your shoulder?” Alex rolled her eyes at his poor attempt at humor. “I’m here as Alex’s protector,” Michael said. Kieran’s eyes widened. “She pulled you out of the mirror?” Michael nodded. “We were talking, and I said I would protect her. After that, I couldn’t get back through. I’m not sure what happened, but it seems I’m here to stay for the moment.” “You won’t be getting back through,” Kieran said. “You just tied yourself to her for eternity, which is a really long time around here.” “Can we stay here?” Alex asked.
“Of course. As a princess of Faeryland, you don’t even have to ask. Would the green room suit?” She remembered the one he mentioned. It overlooked the rose garden and was one of the larger chambers. Other than the blue room, the one she’d shared with Jonah, it was her favorite. “The green room will be perfect,” she answered. Kieran smiled. “Then follow me.” Michael wrapped an arm around her waist and led her along the hallways, following in Kieran’s wake. The faery prince walked in silence. Alex thought it odd, given his usual proclivity for talking, but left him alone. She figured he wanted to talk, he would. They stopped outside of the green room. “Here you go, Alexandra. I’ll have your things delivered to your room.” “My things?” she asked. “I kept all of your things in case you ever returned.” He grinned. “Even though you left with Jonah, I guess I hoped you would come back to me. Forever is a long time to hold a grudge,
after all. I know I made some mistakes, but I still think we would be good together.” “I did return,” she said softly. “Hollow and broken.” “Yes, but it wasn’t like…” Kieran looked at Michael. “I’ve never seen someone mourn a person like she did for you. I wondered if she would ever get over your death.” “I didn’t,” she said. “There’s a difference in trying to live your life again and getting over the death of someone you love.” Michael’s arm tightened around her. “Well, it seems to have turned out all right since you get to see him again,” Kieran said, not looking entirely pleased by the situation. “Michael, if you’ll come with me, I’ll put you in the room next door.” Michael shook his head. “I’m not leaving her side.” “I wasn’t asking you. You can’t sleep in Alexandra’s room.” “And I wasn’t asking for your opinion. I’ve sworn to protect her, and I can’t do that with a wall separating us.”
Michael’s insistence to remain by her side surprised Alex, but in a good way. She also knew if they shared a room, she wouldn’t be able to keep her hands to herself. Seeing as how Michael was an angel, that probably wasn’t a good idea. Tempting, but that didn’t make it right. She was certain heaven had rules about angels fraternizing with humans, especially humans under their protection. “Maybe Kieran’s right, Michael. Maybe we shouldn’t sleep in the same room.” She bit her lip. She wanted to stay with him, wanted it badly, but she knew it was a bad idea. Michael tipped her chin up. “What is it, Alex? I know you’re holding something back.” “It’s just… you’re an angel. It doesn’t seem right that we share a room.” He grinned. “Alex, it’s going to be fine. I promise I’m not going to get in trouble for keeping watch over you.” “Then if you’re sure, I don’t have a problem sharing a room with you.”
Kieran glared at them. “I’m so glad you settled that between yourselves. Unfortunately, your opinion doesn’t count. You will stay in two different rooms.” “No, we won’t,” Alex argued. “Alexandra, you still have a decision to make. Me or Rhys. Until then, I don’t think you need to sleep with a man in your room. Whether you’re a princess or not, there are still rules to follow.” “Jonah stayed with me,” she pointed out. Kieran raised a brow. “Do I need to point out what’s wrong with that example?” She blushed. “Look, just because I’m in the room with her doesn’t mean I’ll be in her bed,” Michael said. “Angel boy, I’m not willing to take the chance. She married her last protector. I’m sure you can see my concern.”
Michael released Alex and took a step toward Kieran. When they were standing eye to eye, he flexed his wings. A golden glow surrounded him and warmth filled the air. “I’m staying with Alex.” Kieran eyed him up and down. “Am I supposed to be impressed?” Michael crowded the faery prince, pushing him up against the wall. “I wasn’t trying to impress you. But I’m not one of your subjects, and I won’t bow to your will. My one and only concern is Alex, and I’ll do anything necessary to protect her.” “Jonah did the same thing. She sleeps alone.” Alex sighed. “She is going back to the other palace. If I wanted to deal with this nonsense, I’d stay with Rhys. I came here because I thought you’d be sympathetic, Kieran.” “I’m sorry, Alexandra,” he said. “But surely you understand.” “I don’t think you understand. I don’t have to pick anyone. Not you, not your brother. I don’t even have to stay here in
Faeryland. I’m only here right now because an angel is a little hard to hide in my world. Plus, my friends might freak out if Michael suddenly shows up again. “I’m not here to marry you, if that’s what you’re thinking. I’m here for shelter and nothing more. And if you can’t provide that, then tell me now, and I’ll leave. But if Michael says that he’s going to stay by my side, then that’s what he’ll do.” Kieran looked down at her. “If that’s what you want, how you feel, then so be it. I’ll allow him to stay with you, but not in your bed.” “Kieran, you have no say over who sleeps in my bed,” she told him. He tensed. “Are you telling me that you plan to share your bed with him?” Alex looked at Michael before returning her gaze to Kieran. “I don’t plan to, but I won’t make any promises either. I knew Michael long before I knew you existed, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted. But I’m trying to be good and not tempt him.”
Michael laughed and looked away from them, mumbling something under his breath. “Very well, Alexandra. I’ll have dinner laid out on the lower veranda in an hour in case you’re hungry,” Kieran told her, finally giving up the battle. “I’m sure I’ll see you in the morning.” “You aren’t going to eat with us?” Kieran shook his head. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea. Besides, I have a few things to take care of. Maya will probably join you. I’ll make certain she knows you’re here.” “Thank you for letting us stay,” she told him. “As if anyone lets you do anything, Alexandra. I ask one thing of you and you fight me on it, even threaten to leave. But, you’re welcome. I’m glad you’re here.” Alex opened the bedroom door and stepped inside with Michael close behind her. The room was every bit as beautiful as she remembered. The large bed, covered in a lace canopy, dominated one wall. Another wall was covered in a mural of a flower garden, complete with butterflies. An armoire stood open
across the room, ready for her things. The doors to the balcony were open, and a breeze blew into the room. She glanced over her shoulder at Michael and wondered if he needed clothes. All three times she’d seen him, he’d been in jeans with a loose white shirt. It was a good look for him, but now that he was cut off from heaven, she wondered if he’d need a wardrobe. She didn’t know if his clothes were an angel perk or part of his heavenly magic. Michael closed the door and came to stand beside her. “Something the matter?” “Just wondering if I should request clothes for you.” He grinned. “Are you saying you don’t like what I’m wearing?” “No, it’s just… you didn’t exactly pack a bag.” “Angels typically don’t need one.” “Yeah, well, they typically aren’t locked out of heaven either, but you are. And it’s all my fault.”
Michael tugged on a lock of her hair. “It isn’t your fault, it’s no one’s fault. And for the record, I love that I get to spend time with you.” “I’ve missed you, Michael, and I’ve wanted nothing more than to have you in my life again, but you don’t belong here. As much as it pains me to say it, you belong in heaven with the other angels. I took you away from that.” “Right now, I belong with the woman I promised to protect, the woman I love… and that would be you. Stop beating yourself up, Alex. Just enjoy the time we have together.” She leaned against him. “I would if I didn’t think it was so wrong.” “I love you, Alex. Spending time with you could never be wrong.” “You don’t understand. I want to do more than spend time with you. Having you here is like having my dreams come true. It’s like getting a second chance, except I know it can’t last long. Sooner or later, you’ll return to heaven and I’ll still be here.”
“Alex…” She held up a hand. “Nothing you say will change the way things are, or how I feel. Having you here is both wonderful and scary all at once. I’m terrified of how I’ll feel once you’re gone again.” Michael wrapped his arms around her. “Alex, you know I’d never do anything to hurt you. I’m here to watch over you, to protect you. Do you really think I’d be here if it was a bad thing? All things happen for a reason. I’m here for a reason.” Looking up at him, she fought back tears. She couldn’t argue with his logic, but she wished she knew why heaven had locked him out. She wasn’t worth protecting to that degree. It was only two faeries after her, not Ghengis Khan. So why was Michael here? Why would heaven torment her this way? If she had to choose between losing Michael again or being married to one of the princes, she’d take marriage. Losing him once had been unbearable. She wasn’t sure she’d survive losing him again.
“Stop worrying about it,” he told her. “Let’s go get something to eat. You can visit with Maya. I know you’ve missed her.” “Do you even eat?” He laughed. “When I’m not in heaven I do. I guess in some respects, being out of heaven is like being part mortal.” “Then I guess we should eat. I remember what your appetite is like.” She fought the urge to reach for him as she walked out of the room. It would be all too easy to fall back into familiar patterns with him, and she knew that would be dangerous. He was the same Michael that had been hers, and yet he wasn’t. But oh how she wished he was! When they reached the lower veranda, Maya was already there. She smiled warmly when she saw them. Alex immediately hugged her, having missed her horribly since the last time they’d been together. “It’s good to see you, Alex.”
“And you, Maya! I wanted to come see you before now, but I didn’t think Rhys would like it.” Maya grinned. “I heard that wasn’t an issue anymore. It seems you have a knack for divorcing my brothers.” “Only when they deserve it.” Michael cleared his throat. “Not to disagree with the two of you, but I think the issue is that Alex was married to the faery princes to begin with. Her life would have been better if Kieran had left her alone.” “Yes, because she was doing so well with the werewolves,” Maya said. Alex bit her lip. “You know, I’ve thought about this before. It was Kieran’s visit that caused the argument between me and Hunter, and consequently the change in our relationship. Then, knowing my parents were returning and that Kieran would come anyway, Logan distanced himself. So, it’s possible that I would have been fine with one of them.” Alex moved toward the table
and picked up a plate of strawberries. “Of course, none of it would have mattered if the one person who has my heart hadn’t died.” Michael shook his head. “I couldn’t control my death. It was just my time to go.” “No,” Alex said adamantly. “It wasn’t!” Maya looked guilty. “Actually, it wasn’t entirely your time,” she admitted softly. “Kieran was furious when he found out, and he did his best to save you, but it was already too late.” “What do you know?” Michael demanded. “If it wasn’t an accident, why was I killed?” “Because Alex loved you too much. Mother needed to make sure that Kieran would be able to claim her without any trouble. She knew the two of you would fight to stay together.” “Are you saying the queen arranged Michael’s accident?” Alex asked. “That he’s dead because of her?” “Yes. But Kieran tried to make it right. He knew how devastated you would be and flew as fast as he could, but he was
too late. Michael was already gone by the time he got there,” Maya said. Michael looked stunned. “All this time I thought I’d died because I was supposed to, and now you’re telling me I was killed. I could have been with Alex this past year!” Maya gave him a sly look. “So be with her now. She’s not married. I doubt she even wants anything to do with my brothers.” “Guys, I’m right here,” Alex said. “Stop planning my life. We see how well that’s worked so far.” She piled various fruits and veggies onto a plate. “I think I’m going to take this upstairs. I’m not up for company right now.” Michael grabbed a plate and began filling it as she walked away.
Chapter Three Upstairs, Alex walked out onto the balcony in her bedroom. She sat at the small table and chairs and ate her dinner. Her mind was spinning after Maya’s revelation. Never would she have imagined the faery queen capable of something so terrible. Michael leaned against the door frame. “Do you know why she chose that night?” “I don’t want to talk about it, Michael. It’s too horrible to contemplate.” “I had something important to discuss with you,” he continued. “It’s why I wanted to see you, why I asked you to take a drive with me.” “What are you talking about?” He walked out onto the balcony and looked down at her. “I was going to ask you to marry me.” Alex’s heart nearly stopped. “What?” “You heard me.”
“Michael, I…” Tears gathered in her eyes. “I would have said yes. Nothing would have made me happier. Being your wife would have… would have been…” She was openly crying and Michael pulled her into his arms. She would never tire of feeling his arms around her. Leaning into him, she let him comfort her. “Please don’t cry, Alex. I didn’t mean to upset you. I just wanted you to know how much I loved you, still love you.” “I know. It just made me realize how much they took from us. We could have been so happy together.” “I had hoped you could feel that way without me. I didn’t want you to mourn me the way you did, to be so miserable. Just because I wasn’t there didn’t mean you couldn’t be happy. There were plenty of nice guys who would have dated you if you’d given them half a chance.” “I didn’t want them. I wanted you.” He released her. “I’m sorry, Alex, but you can’t have me.”
“Then what am I supposed to do? Choose between Kieran and Rhys? Go back to my world and be with Hunter? Be alone?” “Why does it have to be any of those options? Why not find a nice guy at the college, or even a nice faery? You seem to be under the assumption that you have to be with one of those guys. You can do so much better.” “I think I’d rather be alone. At least I won’t be disappointed or have to worry about losing someone I love.” Michael sighed. “Obviously you want to be miserable, and there’s nothing I can do about it.” He got up and walked out of the room, leaving her to her thoughts. Alex knew he meant well, but knowing she’d been cheated out of a life she’d desperately wanted had hit her hard. Would things have been different if Michael had lived? Would their love have been enough to end the faery agreement? She had too many questions and not enough answers. A knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts. “Come in,” she called.
A male faery who appeared to be around her age opened the door. Brown hair flowed over his shoulders and he gazed at her with bright blue eyes. He smiled warmly and bowed to her. “Your Highness, please pardon the intrusion.” He straightened. “My name is Rhane. I couldn’t help but feel your distress. Is there something I may do for you?” “I appreciate that, Rhane, but I don’t think anyone can help me right now.” “Surely there’s something I can do for you, princess.” “Only if you can turn back time and right all of the wrongs in my life.” “Perhaps there haven’t been wrongs, but merely a winding road to this point in your life.” He smiled. “I know things have been difficult for you, but you have people who love you, who care what happens to you. That’s something to be happy about, yes?” “I know you’re right. I’m just wallowing in self-pity.” Rhane frowned. “Why?”
“Maya gave me some bad news today. I’m having a hard time adjusting to it.” He took a step closer and stopped. “There is only one thing Princess Maya knows that could upset you so much. And if she told you the truth about what happened to your Michael, then I’m very sorry.” Alex’s mouth dropped open. “Who are you? How do you know about Michael?” “I was one of the queen’s warriors for hundreds of years, until the day I refused to do her bidding – the day I lost my wings.” She moved closer to him. “You lost your wings? How horrible!” “The queen asked me to assassinate someone, but I couldn’t. No, I wouldn’t.” His eyes met hers. “I knew it would destroy the young girl I’d watched for so long; the one who was destined to be my future princess.” “She asked you to kill Michael and took your wings when you refused?” Alex asked in horror. “I’m sorry for what she put
you through, but I’m glad you told her no. Although, I guess it didn’t matter in the end since she had him killed anyway.” “I should have stayed nearby to keep an eye on him. Maybe if I had, his life would have been spared.” She touched his arm gently. “It isn’t your fault. Please don’t blame yourself, Rhane.” “But I do. If I hadn’t…” He flushed. “If I hadn’t been so taken with you, I would have been thinking more clearly.” Alex wasn’t sure what to say. He was obviously embarrassed by his infatuation of her, but she found it flattering. Not sure what else to do, she took another step closer to him and looked up into his eyes. “Would you… would you want to walk in the garden with me?” she asked. He’d given up so much for her, it seemed only right that she try to make friends with him. Rhane smiled. “I’d love to.” He placed her hand on the crook of his arm and led her out of the room. ***
“You said you’d been one of the queen’s warriors for hundreds of years. What do you do now?” He shrugged. “Four hundred years old and you’d think I’d have some idea of what to do with myself, but being a warrior is almost all I know.” “Almost?” He flushed. “I carve. It’s really just a hobby. The prince has assured me I may always keep my suite of rooms here at the palace. But should I decide to purchase a home in the village, I would need a way to support myself.” “If you live in the palace, why haven’t I seen you before now?” “You didn’t need me before now. While your Michael is here as your protector, I get the feeling that’s causing problems for you. It seemed like you needed a friend.” She leaned against him briefly. “I did. I’m glad you stopped by my room.”
“I hope my question doesn’t offend you, princess, but why are you sharing a room with the angel?” “Michael said he would be able to protect me better if he stayed in the same room.” Rhane grinned. “In some ways, you’re still rather innocent. He could protect you from next door or outside of your room just as easily. I think he merely wanted an excuse to be with you.” She froze. “Really?” “It’s what I would do.” “Maybe I should insist that he take the room next to mine. He’s still pushing me into a relationship with someone. I think at this point anyone would do. Anyone but him anyway. I guess he figures he’s going back to heaven soon so there’s no point, and I know that wishing for anything more from him would just be opening myself up to heartbreak.” “You don’t want a relationship with anyone else?” he asked.
“I just have a hard time believing in love right now. I’ve always loved Michael, but being open enough with someone else to fall in love right now seems scary. I’m not sure I’m ready, and I refuse to marry for anything other than friendship and love. I tried to explain that to Rhys, but I’m not sure he really understands.” “I would think Prince Kieran would be more understanding than Prince Rhys. I’ve watched both of them grow up, and I’ve seen how they both react to you. Kieran may not always be as mature as he should be, but I think he would be the better choice. Prince Rhys would end up breaking your heart.” He grinned. “Well, perhaps they both would. They honestly don’t mean any harm though. Kieran wouldn’t have flirted with Fleur before if he’d known it would hurt you. And Rhys… I believe he would be faithful to you, for as long as he’s able.” “Maybe, but I’d have to see his past lovers every day. I can’t live like that and he can’t understand why not. As for Kieran, I think he would become bored with me over the years. I don’t think either of them are meant for me.”
“What about your werewolves? Your husband may have died, but the alpha would still take you. Hunter, isn’t it?” She shook her head. “I don’t want Hunter or Logan.” “Do you know what, or rather who you do want?” “I can’t have the one person I want more than anything. Honestly, my life has been so caught up with werewolves and your princes that I haven’t had time to think about being with anyone else. I obviously can’t return to my world because of the wolves, so I’d have to make my home here. I don’t see Rhys or Kieran letting me marry someone else. I’m afraid my options are rather limited.” He winked at her. “Unless you showed interest in someone older, and therefore more powerful than them.” “Just what are you suggesting, Rhane?” “Nothing,” he said, looking away. “I was merely pointing out an avenue you probably hadn’t thought of before now.” She walked over to a stone bench and sat down, and waited to see if he would follow. He might be four hundred, but he looked
twenty-one. And she’d be lying if she said she didn’t find him attractive. Michael’s words echoed in her mind. Did he really want her to find someone? Or did he want her as much as she wanted him? Not that it mattered. How did you have a relationship with an angel? What she needed to do was put Michael out of her mind, at least as an option for a future husband and lover. Rhane came and sat beside her and she smiled up at him. His blue eyes sparkled like the crystal springs in Faeryland, and she lost herself in his gaze for a moment. She wondered what he was thinking, but was too afraid to ask, and she didn’t know him well enough to guess. But she had a suspicion that he was thinking about her. “I think your angel is wondering if you need to be rescued,” he said as he looked up at the balcony above them. “He’s been watching you for a few minutes now.” Alex fought the urge to look up. “I don’t need to be rescued.”
His gaze returned to hers. “You don’t wish for me to leave? It would give you more time with your angel.” “No, I don’t want you to leave.” If Michael wanted her to move on, then that’s what she would do. He’d suggested that she forget about Kieran and Rhys and she knew he was right. What better way to do that than to spend time with Rhane? He seemed nice and she found that she wanted to know more about him. “I would ask what you think of Faeryland,” he said, “but I guess you haven’t had the best of times here.” “It hasn’t been all bad.” “I know you’re close to Maya, but you haven’t really had a chance to explore my world, to make friends. How can you be happy here if your husband and his family are the only people you know?” “I guess you’re right, but I always felt like an outsider. I got to know a few of the merchants while I was married to Kieran, but I clung to Jonah like a lifeline. I guess that’s why things ended so badly with Kieran.”
“You can’t take the blame. He’s responsible for his own actions. If he’d paid more attention to you, then he wouldn’t have acted like a jealous ass. I owe the royal family my fealty, but it doesn’t mean I agree with everything they do. Kieran’s biggest mistake was letting you go.” She blushed. “It’s not as if I’m perfect. I’m sure someone like Fleur would have been better for him. He only married me because of the agreement.” “I don’t know much about it, except that the queen wanted you to marry Kieran at any cost. But I don’t know what it actually says. Supposedly you have to live here and marry one of the princes, but I’ve heard your angel reset the clock. If the terms of the agreement have been met, then I’d say you’re free to do as you please.” “But they’re saying once more that I have to pick between Rhys and Kieran.” He waved a hand. “Faery politics. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. The queen may command you to
marry, but since you’ve now been married to both of her sons, our laws prohibit her from forcing you into wedding either of them again.” Alex’s eyes widened. “Really? Why didn’t someone tell me that before now?” “I’m sure they were under orders not to, or they just didn’t know you were unaware of it. Your protector would have told you if he’d know about it.” Her hands fidgeted in her lap. “I’m a little worried about tomorrow. You see, Rhys kind of doesn’t know we aren’t married anymore. We had a fight and without realizing what I was doing, I divorced him after I’d left the palace. I can only imagine how furious he’ll be when he wakes in the morning.” Rhane frowned. “Alex, he would know immediately if you divorced him.” “I think he might have been occupied at the time.” “It doesn’t matter. He could have been in the midst of war and he would have known.”
“So… he just doesn’t care? I don’t have to worry about a surprise visit in the morning?” He reached over and took her hand. “I think he cares more than you realize. I’m sure he’ll turn up when you least expect it.” “Enough about me and my problems. Since you’re sitting here with me, I’m assuming that means you aren’t married.” He grinned. “No, I’ve never married. Never even got close for that matter.” “Why not?” “I guess no one caught my attention. Plus, I was kept busy as the queen’s warrior. And I think most of the women who showed an interest wanted Rhane the warrior and not Rhane the man.” “Aren’t they one and the same?” she asked. “I suppose they are, but no one’s ever wanted both. I haven’t exactly been looking hard for a wife either. It isn’t that I want to be alone forever, but I want the right woman by my side.
Someone who will love me for who I am, and someone I can love for all of eternity.” “I’m sure she’s out there.” He smiled down at her. “I am, too.” *** Alex closed her bedroom door and turned to face Michael. “I’m surprised you didn’t join us in the garden.” “The guards told me who he is, and I knew you were in good hands. They didn’t seem to know why he didn’t have wings though. I found that a little odd since he must have done something terrible to have his wings removed.” “The queen took them from him when he refused to do a job she’d assigned him. Rhane knew it would hurt someone if he followed through, the one person would lose their life and another their heart, so he wouldn’t act on her orders.” “As a warrior, I’m sure he’d taken lives before. It shouldn’t have been an unusual assignment for him,” Michael pointed out.
“It was different this time,” she said softly. “It wasn’t about war; it was all in order to smooth the way for Kieran.” “You aren’t making any sense, Alex.” “You, Michael. Rhane refused to kill you when the queen ordered it. He knew it was wrong and that it would hurt me.” She took his hand. “She took his wings from him as punishment. Can you imagine? It would be like someone removing our arms. But he went through that for us, to spare us the pain of losing each other.” Michael shook his head. “No, Alex. He went through that for you.” He grinned. “But I appreciate the effort, even if it didn’t work, and she had me killed anyway.” “He seems really nice.” “The guards spoke highly of him. He doesn’t act as a warrior anymore, but he still has their respect, wingless or not. Before he lost his wings, he was the queen’s right hand man. So he lost more that day than you can imagine.” “He said Kieran guaranteed him a place in the palace as long as he wanted.”
Michael squeezed her hand. “Do you think he’ll honor that vow if he sees the two of you spending time together?” “Kieran may lie, but I don’t think he’d break his word.” “Let’s hope you’re right, or your new friend will be without a home and will have a powerful enemy.” “You think Rhane will want to spend time with me again?” she asked. “The guards seemed surprised he hadn’t spoken to you before now. It seems he’s been fascinated by you for a while now.” “Really?” Her eyes lit up. “You think he’ll want to spend time with me?” He wasn’t Michael, but there was something about Rhane that called to her. The thought of spending more time with him filled her with pleasure. It was surprising since she’d just met him, but he seemed different from the other faeries she’d met. For that matter, he was different from her past husbands and boyfriends, but in a good way. She had a feeling that he was just what she needed.
“I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t,” Michael answered. “You’re easy to love, Alex.” “Who said anything about love?” Michael grinned. “Maybe it’s too soon for that word, but I think you could love each other. He treated you respectfully and didn’t do more than hold your hand, and trust me, he wanted to do more. Can you say the same of the others?” “So what happens now?” “I continue to watch over you until I’m not needed, and you take your time getting to know Rhane.” “I wish things were different, that you and I could be together. But if that isn’t possible, then I guess I should be open to being with someone else, and Rhane seems like a good guy. For now, I think I just want to work at being friends with him, but maybe that could grow into something more. I could definitely do worse.” Michael gave her a hug. “I’m sorry we can’t have a future together. You know I would love nothing more, but I’ll settle for
knowing you’re happy and with a guy who will treat you right and love you the way you deserve to be loved.” Starting tomorrow she would spend time with Rhane and get to know him better. It was the least she could do for both herself and Michael. He was right. She deserved to be happy and to find a nice guy. And something told her that she’d already found him.
Chapter Four The bedroom door burst open, slamming into the wall. Alex sat up in bed abruptly and rubbed her eyes. Rhys stalked toward the bed, looking furious. She cast a glance around the room and found Michael sitting in a chair across the room, his gaze following Rhys. She was glad she hadn’t asked him to stay in another room because she definitely didn’t want to be alone with her ex-husband right then. “One argument and you terminate our marriage?” Rhys demanded. “After everything I’ve done for you? I waited while you mourned Jonah. I even let you bury him on the palace grounds! And now you’ve run to Kieran?” “I didn’t run to Kieran. I just didn’t think you’d let us stay with you.” His eyes narrowed. “Us?”
Alex looked at Michael and Rhys followed her gaze. Michael stood and walked toward them, stopping beside the bed. He looked down at her before glancing at Rhys. “She didn’t think you’d allow me in the palace,” he told the prince. “How did you even get here? And why are you in her room?” Rhys asked in an icy voice. “How I got here doesn’t matter, and I’m here to protect Alex. I can’t watch over her if I’m in another room.” “Are you sure that’s the reason you’re in here?” Rhys asked. “I was sleeping in a chair, wasn’t I? Besides, I’m an angel. Eventually I’ll have to return to heaven. A relationship between us wouldn’t be possible, no matter how much I might wish it were otherwise. And sleeping with her would be inadvisable.” “See that it stays that way,” Rhys warned. “Stop it, Rhys,” Alex said as she got out of bed. “You have no say over who stays in my room, or in my bed for that matter.”
“I’m your husband!” “Not anymore,” she reminded him. “Or did you forget the reason for your visit?” “I know you were upset with me, but it wasn’t a good enough reason to end our marriage. Are you really going to give up after one fight? I thought you were stronger than that.” “It wasn’t just our argument. It became obvious to me that we were just too different. How could you expect me to live in a city with all of your ex-lovers? A few would be okay, but I’m pretty sure we’re talking about way more than that. Not to mention that you cheated on me after we were married. I wouldn’t doubt that’s what you ran off to do after our fight.” Rhys shrugged. “I never claimed to be a saint. I offered fidelity, but you didn’t offer a real marriage in return.” A rumpled Rhane stepped into the room. “Everything all right, princess?” “Everything is fine,” she assured him. “Rhys just stopped by to discuss our marriage.”
He came to stand beside her and faced the prince. “Your Highness, perhaps the middle of the night isn’t the best time to talk to Princess Alexandra. I’m sure this discussion would be best in the light of day.” “Mind your own business, Rhane. This is between me and my wife,” Rhys said. “Ex-wife,” Alex reminded him again. “And don’t talk to Rhane like that. He’s only trying to help.” Rhane glanced down at her in amusement and Rhys looked angrier than ever. She looked at Michael for support, but he merely shook his head. It was obvious he was going to let her handle it on her own, unless she needed him to jump in and save her. “Rhys, I think you should leave. I don’t have anything to say to you right now. And Rhane was right… the middle of the night isn’t the time for a visit, especially not this visit.” “If anyone in this room has a right to be here, it’s me,” Rhys argued. “If you don’t want to talk tonight that’s fine, but we
will talk in the morning. We can work things out, Alex. You know we can. This is all just a misunderstanding.” “No, Rhys, I don’t know that. I’m not sure I can trust you. How do I know you won’t cheat on me again the next time we argue?” Rhane tensed beside her. “He cheated on you?” “It’s okay, Rhane. It was when we were first married, and I didn’t even realize I was his wife, and then again tonight after we argued. It doesn’t matter.” Rhane placed a hand on her lower back. “Of course it matters. He hurt you. If it didn’t bother you, then you wouldn’t have ended your marriage.” Rhys looked surprised. “You divorced me because I slept with someone else tonight?” “That’s only a small part of it.” She sighed. “Okay, so that was a big part of it. Knowing that you weren’t going to send any of your ex-lovers away was another big part. Kieran cast his aside, knowing that it would hurt me to see them day after day, and yet
you flat out refused and told me it would never happen. How was that supposed to make me feel?” “I’m sorry, Alex. I didn’t think about it hurting you. It wasn’t my intention to make you feel that way,” Rhys said, reaching for her. She moved closer to Rhane until she was pressed against his side. “It doesn’t excuse what you did. Besides all of that, you were pushing me into a relationship I wasn’t ready for. I told you I wanted more time, wanted to get to know one another before making our marriage real, but you pushed me to sleep with you. Having an heir to the throne was more important to you than I was.” Rhane’s hand tightened at her waist and she knew her words had upset him. She wanted to look up at him and try to reassure him, but she didn’t dare. She knew it would only infuriate Rhys even more. It appeared that some of the anger had left her exhusband, but she still didn’t trust him. After having felt his temper first hand, she wasn’t going to give him an opportunity to strike
out at her. He hadn’t hit her before, but he’d been so furious and had gripped her so tightly that it wouldn’t have surprised her if he had. “I can see we aren’t going to get anywhere with this discussion tonight.” Rhys backed toward the door. “I’ll see you in the morning at breakfast.” After he left, Alex sagged in relief. She really hadn’t been up to a fight with Rhys tonight. Not that she wanted to have one in the morning either, but at least she’d be more rested and better prepared. She hoped. She glared at Michael. “What was that about? Aren’t you supposed to protect me?” “If he’d tried to harm you, I would have stepped in. I thought you were holding your own. Didn’t it feel good to tell him how you felt, to let him know what he’d put you through?” “All I did was argue with him.” “Was all of that true?” Rhane asked. “Did he try to force you into his bed before you were ready?”
“Yes. It’s the main reason I went to Michael the first time.” She shrugged. “I don’t handle pressure very well. All I could think about was escaping and I knew I needed someone to talk to. I remembered Kieran bringing Michael through a portal and before I knew it, that’s where I was. Even though it hadn’t been my original destination. “The second time I saw Michael was after my argument with Rhys. I didn’t know what to do, and I hoped that Michael would have the answers. Mostly I just wanted someone to hold me and tell me everything would be all right. That’s when I divorced Rhys, entirely by accident I might add, and Michael ended up being my protector, locked out of heaven for the time being.” Rhane squeezed her waist again. “I think it’s a good thing that you did end the marriage. It’s obvious he wasn’t going to treat you with respect. He may have given you everything you wanted, but once he learned he could push you around, he probably wouldn’t have stopped.”
“It doesn’t matter. Regardless of what he says in the morning, I’m not going back to him.” She frowned. “I just don’t understand why he and Kieran are trying so hard to win me. It’s not like I’m particularly special. I’m just a human who ended up caught in the midst of an agreement.” “Would you like for me to find out?” Rhane offered. “I may not be a warrior anymore, but I still have some connections around the palace.” Michael snorted. “That’s one way of putting it. You’re revered around here. The guards think you walk on water.” Rhane’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Yes, well…” “Any help you can provide would be appreciated,” Alex told him. “There has to be something more going on than just that stupid agreement with my parents. I’ll feel better once I know what it is, and I’ll be better equipped to handle Kieran and Rhys.” “Consider it done, princess.” She smiled. “Why don’t you call me Alex?”
“The name doesn’t do you justice, princess, and I’ve heard you don’t like to be called Alexandra. So I shall call you princess.” “You may call me Alexandra if you like,” she said softly. “Or Alexandra Meara,” Michael said with a grin. “Thanks, Michael,” she muttered. “You know I hate my middle name.” “I think it’s beautiful,” Rhane said. “Your parents should have made that your first name. It suits you.” “Thank you.” Her cheeks burned with embarrassment. “Now, if the two of you don’t mind, I think I’d like to get some sleep before I have to face off with Rhys again in the morning.” Rhane released her and gave her a short bow. “As you wish, princess.” He grinned. “I’ll find you tomorrow, Alexandra, after I’ve done some research on your problem. Try to avoid Prince Rhys until then if you can.” “I’ll do my best.” “Goodnight then.” He smiled at her one last time before closing the bedroom door.
Once he was gone, she crawled back into bed. She watched Michael walk over to the chair in the corner and frowned. There was no way he was comfortable, not considering his size, or his wings. “Michael, you can’t sleep in the chair.” “Well, I can’t sleep in the bed either. Both princes would pluck my wings if they found me sleeping beside you. I wouldn’t put it past Rhane to get in line to kick my ass. No, the chair is definitely safer.” “Then sleep on top of the covers, but get out of the chair. If you’re stiff and sore tomorrow, you won’t be able to protect me.” She patted the bed. “Come on. We’ve shared a bed before.” “Yeah. That’s what I’m afraid of. I’m probably in enough trouble for kissing you. If we did anything else, I might earn a one way ticket to a much warmer climate.” She sighed. “I promise to behave.”
He shook his head. “I can’t make the same promise. We can figure something out for tomorrow, but tonight I’m staying in the chair.” “Fine.” Michael settled in the chair and Alex closed her eyes. *** The next morning, Alex sat out on one of the verandas with her face lifted toward the sun. So far, she’d managed to avoid everyone but Michael and Maya. Not a single prince in sight. “Good morning, princess.” She opened her eyes and smiled at Rhane. “I thought you were going to call me Alexandra.” “I tried, but after much thinking I’ve decided I can’t call you the same name that either prince calls you.” She shook her head. “Most of the kingdom calls me Princess Alexandra, and Michael and Maya both call me Alex.”
“I know.” He grinned. “It seems juvenile, and it probably is, but I don’t wish to be anything like Rhys or Kieran, and that includes calling you by the same name they use.” She took his hand. “Then call me Meara.” “But you hate that name.” “You don’t.” She blushed. “Besides, I kind of like the way it sounds when you say it.” “As you wish… Meara.” “Would you like to join me?” she asked. “Actually, I was going to ask you to take a walk with me. I have some news for you, news that you probably don’t want to hear this close to the palace,” he said. “Already?” Rhane nodded. “Then let’s go.” Alex stood and walked with him down the steps and into the garden. Once they were away from the palace and any prying ears, Rhane began telling her everything he’d learned.
“The queen’s advisor is a friend of mine. He knew everything about the agreement, and more importantly, he knew everything about you. There’s a reason the princes are fighting over you. Before our current king and queen, there was King Finn. He was much loved by the people, but he was also restless. He visited your world many times, and it was during one of these visits that he fell in love with a human. “She refused to come to Faeryland even though it’s said she loved him very much. So, our king named the current king as his successor and moved to your world. I believe he meant to return to Fearyland, but he stayed with his human family until the day he died. Being in your world, he aged as a human would age. “He had several children and many grandchildren, but over the years his line died out as each grandchild had fewer children, as did their children, and so on. So now there are only two that remain. Your father and you.” Alex looked stunned. “I’m part faery?”
“A very small part, but yes. More importantly, you’re the rightful heir to the throne. Whomever you marry will become the king once you’re carrying the next heir. That’s why Prince Rhys has been so pushy, and Prince Kieran has been trying to win you over again. I’m guessing the queen has told them that they aren’t truly princes of Faeryland and cannot inherit the throne as long as you live.” “I can’t be the heir to the throne! I don’t know anything about being a queen. What if I screw up?” Rhane tucked a wayward strand of hair behind her ear. “You’ll be a wonderful queen. All you have to do is find your king. I’d be happy to make some suggestions if you’d like.” “Are you putting yourself on the list?” she asked with a grin. He flushed. “No, I’m not. You’ll need someone better than me; someone who hasn’t been disgraced and lost their wings.”
“Is it possible to get your wings back?” she wondered. If the queen’s magic took his wings away, couldn’t a queen’s magic give them back? “I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter. I’m not good enough for you, Meara. With or without wings, the fact remains that I disobeyed the queen and was punished, publicly.” Butterflies erupted in her stomach when he said her name. No one had ever called her Mera before, but it felt right that Rhane did. Now if she could just convince the silly man that he was more than good enough for her. If anything, he was better than her. He’d proven that he was kind and followed through on his promises. Obviously he was humble, a well respected warrior, wellmannered, and quiet. She couldn’t think of anyone better to consider as her future king. While she hardly knew him, she felt that she could trust him explicitly. “I’m not interested in having men paraded before me. What’s wrong with leaving things as they are? Surely the princes will give up eventually when they realize I’m not going to give in.”
“I wouldn’t count on it. The queen will continue to push them. If she has to lose her throne, she wants to make sure one of her sons is the king.” “How do I get myself into these messes?” She sighed. “So it’s get married or have the princes drive me crazy. What happened to ‘happily ever after?’” He grinned. “You may be in Faeryland, but fairy tales don’t exist even here. The best you can hope for is an honest man you can grow to love over the years. We can even find someone who will promise to be faithful to you.” “Is it so wrong of me to want love before marriage?” Rhane laced their fingers together. “No, it isn’t. It just isn’t practical at the moment. But there is one way to make you feel better. Princess Maya has a new mirror, one that shows the future.” “You mean I could see how my future husband is?” “Exactly. Maybe then you’d feel more comfortable pursuing your future spouse. Would that put you at ease?” Alex nodded. “Yes, I think it would.”
“Then let’s go find Princess Maya.” *** “Are you sure this is what you want to do?” Maya asked. “You didn’t like what you saw last time you used one of my mirrors.” “I’m sure. It’s better to know and prepare myself than go stumbling along.” “But what if it shows you married to one of my brothers? I know you don’t want to be with either of them.” Alex shrugged. “If that’s what my future holds, then so be it. I’ll just have to adjust to it.” Maya reluctantly handed her the mirror. “Just think about what you want and the mirror will show it to you. And for the record, I still say this is a bad idea.” Alex took the mirror and concentrated, thinking about her future husband. After a moment, the mirror began to glow. She looked into its glassy surface, and her eyes widened in surprise. Her gaze met Rhane’s across the room before settling on the mirror
once more. What she saw didn’t distress her, but she had no idea how to make it come true. Her future husband was adamant they couldn’t have a future together, so how was she to convince him otherwise? The light dimmed and the image vanished. She handed the mirror back to Maya and forced a smile. “Thanks for letting me use it.” “So… was it one of my brothers?” Maya asked. “No, but it’s someone who won’t marry me. Maybe the mirror was wrong.” Maya shook her head. “It’s never wrong. If it showed you married to someone, then you’ll marry them.” She smiled. “Everything will work out.” Alex nodded and walked to the door. “I hope you’re right.” Out in the hall, Rhane gave her an encouraging smile. “Don’t worry. If it showed you married to Michael, we’ll make it happen.”
Startled, she looked up at him. “I never said who I saw in the mirror.” “You didn’t have to. Your reaction said it all.”
Chapter Five “Why does Rhane think I’m going to be your husband?” Michael asked. “Maya let me use one of her mirrors. I was able to look into the future and see who my husband will be.” “And it said it would be me?” he asked skeptically. “No. Rhane just assumed it was you. I mentioned that my future husband wouldn’t marry me, and he jumped to conclusions. He never asked who I saw in the mirror, and I don’t think I should tell him. At least, not yet.” “Who wouldn’t marry you?” “Rhane.” “You have to be joking,” Michael said. “The man is in love with you.” “You really think so?” “I know so. Getting him to marry you shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Actually… he thinks he isn’t good enough to marry me, and I don’t know how to convince him otherwise.” Michael grinned. “That’s easy enough. Seduce him.” “Michael!” “I know you’ve never had to do that before, but I’m sure you can manage. It figures that the guy you’re supposed to be with is the one who isn’t trying to get in your pants.” “What am I going to do?” “Well, first, you’re going to take a shower and get dressed. You avoided Rhys yesterday so I’m sure he’ll turn up today. After that, you’re going to get some breakfast. And somewhere along the way, you’re going to find Rhane.” “It sounds like you have it all figured out,” she said. He grinned. “Go take your shower. I’m going to go get something to eat.” Alex nodded and laid her clothes out on the bed. After Michael was gone, she went into the bathroom and undressed. She
started the shower, stepped under the spray, and promptly screamed. Rhane burst the door and froze in shock. He quickly turned around. “I’m sorry, Meara! I didn’t mean…” “You can turn around now,” she said as she wrapped a towel around herself. Rhane turned to face her. “I heard you scream.” “Someone tampered with my shower. When I turned it on, the water came out scalding hot. It was the perfect temperature yesterday.” He walked over to the shower and stuck his hand under the spray. Wincing, he turned it off. He knelt on the floor and ran his hand along the base. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Trying to trace the magic that was used. It’s very faint. Someone was trying to cover their tracks.” “Can you fix it?”
He grinned. “Of course I can.” Running his hands around the shower, he murmured words in faery. Rainbow sparkles filled the air and he stood. “That’s it?” she asked. Rhane nodded. “Why is your magic different from everyone else’s? Maya, Kieran, Rhys… their hands glow when they perform magic. But with you, sparkles fill the air.” “My magic is stronger than theirs, stronger than anyone’s actually.” She shivered from a chill in the air and moved closer to him. “Thank you for coming to rescue me.” “Perhaps you should dress before we have this discussion, or any discussion for that matter.” “Rhane…” She took his hand and pressed her body against his. “What are you doing?”
“I don’t know, but it feels right.” She licked her lips. “Are you going to make me beg?” “Meara, please don’t do this. You have no idea what you’re asking of me.” “Do you not want to kiss me?” “I want it more than you could ever know, but it doesn’t make it right. What would Michael think? You need to think about your future king.” “Right now I can’t think about anyone but you. Please, Rhane.” He lowered his head and captured her mouth with his. Pleasure rippled through her and she leaned into him. His lips softly brushed against hers as his arm wrapped around her waist. Alex released her towel and wound her arm around his neck. He lifted his head and stared down at her. “I don’t think we should take this any further,” he said. She caressed his cheek. “I want you.”
“If we do this, you wouldn’t be able to guarantee your heir was your husband’s.” “Rhane, let me worry about it. Right now I just want to feel your body against mine,” she said. “Is that so wrong?” With a groan, he kissed her again, pulling her tight against his body. She ran her hands up the back of his shirt and pressed them against his warm skin. She could feel the slight ridges where his wings had been and her heart ached for him. Alex broke the kiss and removed his shirt. Even without his wings, he was still beautiful to look upon. Her hands caressed the hard contours of his chest, reveling in the feel of his skin against hers. Rhane removed his pants, and she licked her lips. With her eyes on his, she fell to her knees and took him in her mouth. Feeling the steely length of him gliding along her tongue made her moan. She sucked him, taking him all the way into her mouth until he slid down the back of her throat. Her hand curled around his balls, gently massaging them as she stroked his cock with her lips and tongue.
He groaned and grabbed a fistful of her hair. “Meara, if you don’t stop, I’m going to come in your mouth.” She stopped long enough to grin up at him. “Would that really be so horrible?” “You’re going to be the death of me, princess. While you paint a pretty picture, I’d much rather be inside of you. Preferably on the bed.” She rose and wrapped her arms around him. “Then let’s go to the bedroom.” He lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed. “Are you sure about this? Once we take this step, there’s no going back. We could at least wait long enough for me to get you a tonic to keep you from getting pregnant. They may not always work, but it’s better than nothing.” “I don’t want to wait.” Rhane lay down with her and rolled onto his back. Cradling her face between his palms, he kissed her. Alex couldn’t remember the last time someone had been so gentle with her. Werewolves
had a tendency to be wild and out of control, not lasting very long. Kieran had been passionate, but not particularly gentle. “Make love to me, Rhane,” she whispered against his lips. “Just as soon as I know we won’t be interrupted.” He held out his hand, sending magic toward the door. “All of that for a lock?” she joked. He grinned. “I didn’t just lock it, princess. I put up a magic barrier. Absolutely no one can enter this room unless one of us tells them to enter.” She kissed him. “Perfect.” Rhane sat up and pushed her down onto her back. He cupped her breasts and caressed her nipples. She gripped the sheets and arched her back. His touch felt so wonderful she would have sworn he was using magic. Her skin hummed and she wanted to purr. His hands skimmed down her stomach to her hips, and one slipped between her legs to caress her pussy. “You’re already wet.”
“Please, Rhane. Please stop teasing me. I want you so much.” He chuckled. “Not yet, princess.” He slid two fingers inside of her, and she whimpered, wanting more. She wanted to feel his cock inside of her. As his fingers thrust in and out of her, he leaned forward and took her nipple in his mouth. She gasped in pleasure and writhed beneath him. “You don’t get my cock until you come,” he said softly, his breath caressing her sensitive skin. “Please, Rhane.” “I want to watch you come.” His fingers slid into her with slow easy strokes. Her orgasm was building, but it wasn’t enough. Something was missing. As if reading her mind, his other hand cupped her ass, his fingers dipped between the cheeks. He stroked her anus with a finger and her hips jerked upward in surprise. No one had ever touched her there
before, but she found that she liked it. When he stroked her again, she sighed in pleasure. Using the juices from her pussy, he slowly eased his finger inside of her. As both hands pleasured her, she felt herself tip over the edge. Riding the tidal wave of her orgasm, she begged him for more. His fingers continued to thrust into her, triggering another orgasm. Afterward, she lay trembling before him. She tugged on him until his body covered hers. She buried her hands in his hair and kissed him. Already their time together had been wonderful, and it was just beginning. He eased his cock into her, filling her completely. She wrapped her legs around his waist so she could take in all of him. He laced his fingers with hers and began thrusting into her with long slow strokes, pulling all the way out and sliding all the way back in, over and over again.
“I’ve never felt anything as incredible as being with you,” he said right before he kissed her. As his tongue tangled with hers, she came apart beneath him. Rhane continued to plunge into her into she came again. This time he let go, allowing himself to find his release. As their breath mingled, she felt a tingling sensation down her neck and across her shoulder. He pulled back and stared down at her with a look of horror. “I’m sorry, Meara. I never meant to…” “Meant to what? What’s wrong, Rhane?” He rolled away from her. “Rhane?” She placed a hand on his arm. “I’ve done something horribly wrong, princess. But it can be fixed. We can call your angel in here and fix it right now.” “Fix what? Rhane, you aren’t making any sense. Are you… do you regret what we did?” He cupped her cheek. “I could never regret being with you, but I was careless.” He sighed. “Go look in the mirror, princess.”
Alex got up and walked over to the floor length mirror in the corner. What she saw made her gasp. There was a beautiful tattoo of flowers and butterflies winding down her neck and across her shoulder. He’d shared his magic with her. Rhane had made her his. She returned to his side and ran her fingers through his hair. “Why would you think I’d want to undo this?” “Princess Maya’s mirror showed you and Michael together.” She shook her head. “The mirror showed me with someone who wouldn’t marry me. I never said it was Michael.” She laced her fingers with his. “What the mirror showed me has already happened.” “But… my mark on you means we’re married.” “Exactly,” she said with a grin. “The man I saw in the mirror was you, Rhane. That’s why I wasn’t worried when you said we shouldn’t be together because of my future husband.” “You lied to me?” he asked quietly.
She looked surprised. “No. I just… I knew how you felt about marrying me. I thought if we spent enough time together I could ease you into it.” Rhane stood and walked into the bathroom. He pulled on his clothes and turned to face her. He looked hurt and angry, and Alex had no idea how to fix it. She hadn’t meant for things to turn out this way. She’d only followed Michael’s advice and seduced her future king. So why wasn’t it turning out the way it should? “I don’t even know what to say, princess. How could you do this?” “I… I didn’t mean to do anything. I didn’t know you would share your magic with me. I had no idea how things would turn out. I just knew that one day we would be married.” “I don’t know that I can believe you.” Without another word, he walked away. She stared after him, willing him to come back. In the short time she’d known him, she’d come to care for Rhane. Knowing that he thought she was a liar cut deep. He’d never trust her again.
Gathering the blankets around herself, she curled up in the bed and cried. The one thing she wanted she couldn’t do. No matter how much he might come to hate her, she couldn’t dissolve their marriage. If nothing else came of it, she was going to make sure he got his wings back. It was the least she could do. She just wasn’t sure how to do it yet. She felt a warm hand on her shoulder and looked up. Michael sat down and gathered her in his arms. She couldn’t seem to stop her tears and clung to him as she sobbed. “He marked you as his own, so why are you crying?” he asked. “He did it by mistake, and now he’s angry with me. He wants me to end it.” “Do you want to? Despite what the mirror says, do you want him in your life?” “Yes. Yes, I do,” she answered brokenly. “I care about him, Michael. I was excited when the mirror showed Rhane standing by my side. And now I’ve made a mess of things.”
He smoothed her hair back from her face and dried her tears. “Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to. He’ll eventually come around. After all, who could possibly resist you?” “My husband.” He kissed the top of her head. “Come on. I’ll fill the tub for you. You can soak for a little bit, then you need to get dressed and eat something.” “Michael, I…” “You’re going downstairs even if I have to throw you over my shoulder.” She sighed, knowing he would follow through. “I don’t want anyone to see my mark. They’ll expect Rhane to share a bed with me, and when he doesn’t… I don’t think I could handle the pitying looks and comments.” “Wear your hair down. And remember that I’ll be by your side. I promise I won’t leave you.” “All right. But can I come up after breakfaster? Or do you plan to hold me hostage downstairs?”
He grinned. “We’ll see.”
Chapter Six A month passed and things were still strained between Alex and Rhane. He avoided her as much as possible, and she spent a lot of her nights crying. Michael stayed by her, never straying from her side. She would have been lost without him. By some miracle, they’d managed to keep her marriage a secret. The downside was the rumor about her and Michael that was sweeping the palace. As they strolled through the garden, he put his arm around her waist. It was a hotter day than usual and she was feeling lightheaded. Alex lost her footing and sagged against him. “Alex, are you okay?” “I’m fine,” she said softly. But when she took her next step, she sank to her knees. Michael lifted her into his arms. “You’re far from okay, honey. Let’s get you to Maya. If there’s something wrong, she can heal you.”
They entered the palace and Michael swiftly carried Alex up to the second floor. Most afternoons Maya could be found reading in her sitting room, or on her balcony. When they entered her suite, she rose from her chair. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “She nearly fainted in the garden,” Michael told her. Maya’s brow furrowed in concern and she motioned toward the sofa. “Put her down there.” Michael laid her down, but held her hand and knelt at her side. Alex could tell he was worried and wanted to soothe his fears. “I’m sure it was just the heat,” she said softly. “I’ll be fine.” “I’ll feel better after Maya checks you out.” She nodded and let the faery to her magic. But when Maya gave her a shocked look, she began to worry. What could possibly be wrong with her? Maya looked from Alex to Michael and back again. “My brothers are going to be furious.”
“Why?” Alex asked. “Because you’re pregnant. I know how you feel about Michael, but how could you? After Jonah they won’t be so forgiving.” Michael grinned. “They aren’t allowed to be angry.” He helped Alex sit up and swept her hair back, making Maya gasp. “The baby isn’t mine. It belongs to their future king.” Maya reverently touched the mark. “It’s so elaborate. I’ve never seen it’s equal. Only a truly powerful faery could leave that type of mark.” “She’s married to Rhane, but he’s being difficult. He’s barely spoken to her since they were together.” “If I tell him about the baby, he’ll think I tried to trap him,” Alex said. “What am I supposed to do? Set him free like he wanted?” “Is that what he asked you to do?” Maya asked in surprise. “Why would he do that?”
“He was the one I saw in your mirror that day, and I didn’t tell him. He said I’d lied by being with him and not saying anything.” “You’ve been under too much stress lately,” Maya said. “I’d thought you were just spending time with Michael because of how close you are, but now I see that he’s been protecting you.” “Is fainting normal?” Michael asked. “I mean, should we be worried?” “She needs to stop worrying about Rhane, and she needs to eat regular meals. If she doesn’t start taking care of herself, she’ll end up in bed for a reason other than depression.” Michael nodded. “I’ll take care of her.” “Well, ‘her’ is sitting right here and would like to lie down until lunch,” Alex said. “I think I’ve had enough sunshine and socializing this morning.” He lifted her into his arms. “Then I’ll take you to your room.”
She twined her arms around his neck and snuggled against him. Michael made her feel safe and loved – two things she desperately needed. If it weren’t for him, she would have completely fallen apart by now. He’d held her at night while she cried and stayed by her side during the day. She couldn’t have asked for a better friend. She still loved him, but it had changed into a different type of love. Michael carried her to her room and closed the door. Laying her down on the bed, he caressed her cheek. “Are you tired?” he asked. “No. I just needed the quiet of my room. I’m sure everyone saw you carry me out of the garden. The whole palace will know within the hour. I don’t feel like being stared at right now.” He climbed onto the bed behind her and pulled her back against his chest. Picking up the book on the bedside table, he opened it and began to read to her. His arm around her made her feel safe and the deep resonance of his voice helped her relax.
As he read to her, she curled up against him, wrapping her arms around his waist. Being with Michael was familiar and comforting. It reminded her of their years together and she wished things could be as simple as they’d been back then. Their biggest worry had been getting caught in her bedroom by her parents. Now she worried about everything. Michael put the book down and hugged her. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing. I was just thinking.” “About?” “Us. I was remembering our time together when you were alive. I miss that, miss belonging to something special. Is it so wrong of me to want that again?” “Of course not. That’s the whole reason I sent Jonah to you.” Michael kissed her cheek. “I’m sorry things didn’t work out. I shouldn’t have sent you back. If I had left the two of you alone, maybe you’d still be together.”
“Rhys said he could see the future. He said Jonah would have died in a few years. I would have lost him either way.” “I wish there was something I could do, Alex. First you lost me and then Jonah… you’ve had so much heartache, and I can’t seem to stop it. I would give anything to make sure you get a happy ending, even if it meant giving up my wings.” “No, Michael. I wouldn’t let you do that. Just knowing you’re here is enough.” He held her and ran his fingers through her hair. “I would do anything for you, Alex. I respect the fact that you’re married, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love you.” Rhane stepped into the room. “Well, isn’t this touching? No wonder I didn’t feel her distress, even though I was told by several guards she had to be carried into the palace and to her room.” Michael narrowed his eyes. “So every night that she’s cried herself to sleep, you’ve felt it and done nothing?”
“She needed to say the words to dissolve our marriage. If I had come to her, it would have given her hope. Feeling her pain nearly killed me, but I knew I had to stay away. I wanted to come to her, more than once.” Michael settled Alex on the bed and faced Rhane. “She hasn’t said the words in a month, and she certainly isn’t going to say them now.” Alex’s eyes widened. “Michael, no! You can’t!” “He has a right to know. You know what it means, Alex. It isn’t something you can keep from him, nor from the kingdom.” “What’s he talking about, princess?” Rhane asked. “Rhane, I…” She felt the blood drain from her face. How could she tell him? He didn’t want her, why would he want a baby? He stepped closer and knelt on the bed. “Meara? Is something wrong?” “Rhane, I… I don’t want you to hate me more than you already do.”
He looked surprised. “Hate you? Is that what you think? I could never hate you.” “But you were so angry, and you demanded that I dissolve the marriage. You’ve hardly spoken to me since then. What was I supposed to think?” “I was trying to force you to say the words.” “I can’t say them. Not only do I not want to, but… Rhane, we’re…” “Just tell him, Alex,” Michael said. She took a breath to steady her nerves. “Do you remember our morning together and why you didn’t want to be with me?” Rhane frowned. “What does that have to do with anything?” “I’m pregnant.” She tucked her hair behind her ear with a shaky hand. “You’re not only stuck being my husband, but you’re going to be a father, too. I only found out about it today.” Rhane gently took her in his arms. “Why didn’t you come and tell me?”
“I was scared. If you didn’t want me, there was no reason for you to want this baby. I didn’t think I could handle rejection again.” “Meara, I’m sorry I hurt you. I thought I was doing what was best for both of us. You need someone strong by your side. I wanted you to pick a king who would be worthy of you.” “Rhane, you are worthy of me. Do you have any idea how strong you are? The queen didn’t just take your wings, you let her do it. You’re the most powerful faery in the kingdom. She couldn’t have done it otherwise. “I realized something the other day. It will take an incredible amount of magic to bring back your wings, something I’ve wanted to do for you. And the only person with that much power is you. You’ve allowed yourself to be punished all these years for doing something right. I won’t let you punish yourself anymore.” “What are you saying, Meara?”
“I’m saying that as a princess of Faeryland, the future queen, and your wife, I command you to regenerate your wings.” She caressed his cheek. “For me. Please.” Sparkles surrounded them and she watched in amazement as his wings began to form. When the sparkles faded, Rhane’s wings were fully intact. Every color of the rainbow shone brightly in the iridescent wings. They were so beautiful they took her breath away. Reverently, she reached out and touched one. “I take it you like them,” he said with a grin. “They’re wonderful. Michael, don’t you think…” She looked around the room. “He left about ten minutes ago.” “I never noticed.” Rhane caressed her cheek. “I’ll take that as a compliment.” “Are you angry about the baby?” “Of course not. It wasn’t something I’d planned, but I’m not upset about it. If you truly want me by your side, I’ll stop
fighting you on it. If you want us to have a real marriage, then that’s what we’ll do.” “You’ll stay here, with me, at night?” “In this room, no. We’re going to find you something better.” He pulled her hair away from her neck. “And you’re going to stop hiding this. I don’t think you were fooling too many of the guards anyway. They saw me come in here that day, and they know how long I stayed. Besides, parts of the mark could be seen now and then.” “Maya was surprised when she saw it today. Michael had to point it out to her.” “I’m sure the whole royal family will be shocked. They aren’t as observant as my men. I personally trained every guard in the palace. They don’t miss much.” “So the guards knew we were married this whole time?” He nodded. “Then they know you didn’t want me afterward.”
“No, Meara. They know I was foolish and ended up punishing us both. If you’re worried about their opinion of you, don’t be. I think everyone in the palace knows of my feelings for you.” She looked at him in surprise. “Don’t look so shocked. I was in love with you before you came to Faeryland and married Prince Kieran. When I saw how much he hurt you… let’s just say it’s a good thing your world protected you. What I had planned for the prince was far from pleasant and probably would have earned me a stay in the dungeons.” “You love me?” she asked softly. “How could I not? You’re the most beautiful, caring, wonderful woman I know. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather spend my life with.” Tears gathered in her eyes. “Rhane… I never thought I’d hear you say that. Why couldn’t you have been the one to bring me here? I think we could have been happy together.”
“And now?” “Now… I love you. Rhane, I love you so much it hurts. When I found out I was pregnant, I was torn between being happy that we were having a baby together and hurting because I didn’t think you wanted us. But knowing you love me is the most wonderful gift in the world.” “I can think of one more gift, my beautiful wife. Something befitting a future queen of Faeryland.” As rainbow sparkles enveloped her she felt her back begin to tingle and burn. The pain was slight, but she bit her lip to keep from crying out. She had no idea what was happening, but she trusted him. When the magic sparkles disappeared and the pain subsided, she looked at him expectantly. He pointed to the mirror. “Go look.” She stood and walked over to the mirror. When she saw her reflection, her eyes went wide and she gasped. Protruding from her back was the most glorious sight. Lavender and blue faery wings. “How?” she asked.
“I can’t very well walk around with wings if my wife doesn’t have any. Besides, who’s ever heard of a wingless faery queen?” He walked over and kissed her cheek. “Do you like them?” “They’re beautiful, Rhane.” “Not as beautiful as my wife.” He wrapped his arms around her. “I’m sorry it took me so long, Meara. I should have been by your side since that morning. I shouldn’t have left you the way I did. Instead of telling you how much I loved you, I ran. I promise to never run again. For as long as you’ll have me, I’ll remain by your side. My life is only worth living if I get to live it with you.” A tear slipped down her cheek. “I will love you until the day I die, Rhane. I want you by my side for now and always.” “Then it’s a good thing forever lasts a long time here.” She smiled and kissed him, wrapping her arms around him tightly. She finally had everything she wanted in life. It had been a long, bumpy road, but she’d finally made it.
