Ich bin skeptisch gegen alte SprÜche, aber das Sprichwort von dem gutkehrenden neuen Besen paßte auf Fred KrÜger, den JÜngsten unserer K-Abteilung, voll und ganz. Als er vor einem knappen halben Jahr von der Fachschule fÜr Kriminalistik in unser Kollektiv kam, ging er sofort mit jenem Feuereifer an die Lösung der ihm Übertragenen Aufgaben, der SchÜlern zueigen ist, denen danach dÜrstet, endlich das gelernte Theoretische in der Praxis beweisen zu können. Ich fand das durchaus natÜrlich, zumal es mir vor fÜnf Jahren ähnlich ergangen war. Ich mag KrÜger an und fÜr sich gut leiden. Die untersetzte, dickliche Gestalt, die großen blauen Augen in seinem runden, rotwangigen Gesicht, dazu das feuerrote Haar und die winzigen Sommersprossen Über seiner Stupsnase lassen ihn kindlich und harmlos erscheinen, doch das täuscht. In dem halben Jahr, seit er bei uns ist, hat er bereits mehrfach bewiesen, daß er das Zeug zu einem fähigen Kriminalisten besitzt. Mit besagtem Feuereifer ging er auch an die Klärung der Ermittlungssache "Scherben-August", von der in dieser Erzählung die Rede sein soll. "Scherben-August" - diesen Spitznamen hatte der Unbekannte wegen seiner recht eigenartigen Einbruchsmethode von uns erhalten - machte schon seit einiger Zeit die Geschäfte unserer Stadt unsicher, und wir tappten noch immer im dunkeln. Sechs Einbruchdiebstähle, die mit Sicherheit allesamt auf sein Konto gingen, keine Hinweise Über den Verbleib der gestohlenen Waren, keine auswertbaren Spuren an den
Tatorten, nichts. Eine zertrÜmmerte Fensterscheibe und einen leeren Fleck in der Auslage, das war stets das einzige, was uns "Scherben-August" an der Stätte seines nächtlichen Wirkens hinterließ. In jener Nacht, als er zu seinem "siebenten Streich" ausholte, hatte ich Dienst. Es mag wohl kurz nach Mitternacht gewesen sein, als Hauptwachtmeister Fischer einen kleinen hageren Mann in mein Dienstzimmer fÜhrte, an dessen schwankendem Gang man unschwer erkennen konnte, daß er sich in den letzten Stunden in einer Gaststätte aufgehalten hatte.
Fischer Übergab mir den Personalausweis seines Begleiters und meinte: "Etwas fÜr Sie, Genosse Oberleutnant." Das ältere Männchen, das einen feuchtglänzenden grauen Regenmantel trug, stÜtzte sich schnaufend auf die Platte meines Schreibtisches und starrte mich mit trunke-
nen Augen an. "Herr Kommissar, ich habe da etwas entdeckt ." "Es handelt sich wohl um einen Einbruch", bemerkte Fischer und verließ das Zimmer. Nachdem ich einen Blick in den Ausweis geworfen hatte, deutete ich auf den Besucherstuhl vor meinem Tisch. "Nehmen Sie bitte Platz, Herr Buschmann." Mein GegenÜber schien jedoch zu jener Sorte von Menschen zu zählen, die einem erst den halben Lebenslauf erzählen mÜssen, ehe sie zum Kern der Dinge kommen. "Also, daß ich getrunken habe, Herr Kommissar, das sehen Sie ja. Aber so voll bin ich nu ooch wieder nich, daß ich das Loch in der Scheibe nich gesehen hätte", begann er geheimnisvoll, und er legte dann eine Pause ein, wie um die Wichtigkeit seiner Worte zu unterstreichen. "Wo?" fragte ich und bemerkte, daß der Alte in den Taschen seines Regenmantels herumfingerte. "Zigarette?" fragte ich und hielt ihm meine Packung hin. "Danke", sagte er, als ich ihm Feuer gegeben hatte, nahm einen langen Zug und besah sich den Glimmstengel, so, als begutachte er die Qualität einer raren ausländischen Marke. Mit seiner Aussage nahm er sich jedoch Zeit. "Also, wissen Sie, Herr Kommissar, so wie ich heute bin, war ich nicht immer. Aber wenn man so 'ne liebe gute Frau verloren hat, wie meine Trude war, so 'n gutes und liebes Weib, Herr Kommissar, 'ne Seele von 'nem Menschen, 'ne herzensgute Seele ." "Ja, ja, Herr Buschmann, das glaube ich Ihnen, das ist schon ein Grund zum Trinken, solch ein schmerzlicher Verlust", unterbrach ich ihn. "Aber Sie mÜssen mir nun schnell sagen, wo Sie das Loch in der Scheibe entdeckt haben!"
"Aber das will ich ja die ganze Zeit schon!" fiel mir der Alte beleidigt ins Wort. "Also, wenn ich nicht Trudes Todestag begossen hätte, dann wäre ich nicht in die ,Alte Post' gegangen, und wenn ich nicht in die ,Alte Post' gegangen war, dann ." "Sie waren also in der ,Alten Post'", half ich nach, "und wann haben Sie die Gaststätte wieder verlassen?" "Also, wissen Sie, Herr Kommissar, ich komme doch so Viertel nach zwölf aus der ,Alten Post', und ich hatte ja man auch ganz schön den Kanal voll, ja, und weil die Straßenbahn sowieso vorbei war und die nächste doch erst 'ne Stunde später kommt, denk ich, mußt du eben loofen. Ja, ich mache mich nu auf die Socken, und weil ich draußen in SÜd wohne, da gehe ich doch die Wilhelm-Pieck-Straße lang. Wissen Sie, Herr Kommissar, auf der rechten Seite, wo die vielen Schaufenster sind. Und was soll ich Ihnen sagen, Herr Kommissar, als ich an das große Radio-HO komme, wissen Sie, der große Laden mit die vier Fenster, also, ich denke, mich laust der Affe: Die zweite Scheibe, die ist völlig hin! Na, denk ich, da stimmt doch etwas nicht, ja, und da bin ich gleich ." Während ich die Bereitschaft und einen Genossen vom Kommissariat Kriminaltechnik verständigte, fixierte ich das Männchen, das sich sichtlich gekränkt fÜhlte, weil ich seinen Redefluß unterbrochen hatte. "Vielen Dank fÜr Ihren Hinweis", sagte ich deshalb. "Sie kommen jetzt am besten mit zum Tatort. Unser Dienstwagen kann Sie dann anschließend nach Hause bringen."
Es goß noch immer in Strömen, als wir zum Tatort fuhren. Ich saß vorn neben dem Fahrer und blickte verdrießlich durch die vordere Sichtscheibe, auf der der Scheiben-
wischer schnell hin- und herpendelte. Mir kam in den Sinn, daß es eigentlich immer geregnet hatte, wenn "Scherben-August" am Werke war. Kein Zufall, vermutete ich. Der Bursche kalkulierte sicherlich, daß wir ihm bei diesem Wetter weder mit SpÜrhunden beikommen konnten noch irgendwelche Spuren vor den Läden vorfanden. Ich war ziemlich sicher, daß dieser Einbruch erneut auf sein Konto ging. "Haben Sie vorhin keinen Menschen auf der Straße in der Nähe des Ladens gesehen?" wandte ich mich an den alten Buschmann, der sich hinter mir bequem in das Polster zurÜckgelehnt hatte. "Keine Menschenseele!" beteuerte das Männchen. Eine Flut von Licht erhellte plötzlich das Wageninnere. Wir bogen in die von modernen Peitschenlampen hell erleuchtete Wilhelm-Pieck-Straße ein. Nach einer Minute stoppte der Wagen. Vor der zertrÜmmerten Schaufensterscheibe empfing uns ein Streifenposten. "Ich habe die Bescherung eben erst entdeckt", berichtete er. "Wann sind Sie das letztemal hier vorbeigekommen?" fragte ich und schlug den Kragen meines Mantels hoch. "Vor einer reichlichen Stunde", erwiderte der Hauptwachtmeister. Mir fiel ein, daß ich Herrn Buschmann versprochen hatte, daß er in unserem Dienstwagen nach Hause gebracht werden wÜrde. Ich gab dem Fahrer die Adresse und verabschiedete mich von dem alten Mann. "Na, dann wollen wir mal wieder", sagte ich aufmunternd zu Leutnant Richter, der als Kriminaltechniker schon oft vergeblich nach verwertbaren Spuren von "ScherbenAugust" gesucht hatte.
Richter zeigte ein mißmutiges Gesicht. Er deutete auf seine Aktentasche, an der das Wasser nur so herablief. "Ich schätze, daß ich das Ding kaum zu öffnen brauche." Es war denn auch genau wie bei den vorherigen EinbrÜchen dieser Art: Eventuelle Spuren vor der Fassade waren vom Regen längst weggespÜlt. Blieb nur noch die Auslage. Dort fanden wir denn auch zwischen Glassplittern und Rundfunkgeräten das Corpus delicti: einen halben Ziegelstein, alt und rissig. Richter barg ihn sorgsam und schlug ein Tuch darum. NatÜrlich entdeckten wir auch wieder einen leeren Fleck in der Dekoration, dort, wo vor einer guten Stunde noch ein großer Radio-Super oder ein Fernsehgerät gestanden hatte. Unweit des Tatortes befand sich eine Fernsprechzelle. Von dort aus rief ich die Verwaltung des HO-Kreisbetriebes an. Ich hatte GlÜck. Vom Nachtdienst erfuhr ich die Adresse des Objektleiters. Ich beauftragte Richter, mit unserem inzwischen zurÜckgekehrten Dienstwagen zur Wohnung des Verkaufsstellenleiters zu fahren und den Mann auf dem schnellsten Wege herzubringen. Unterdessen wollte ich mich in der Nähe des Tatortes etwas umsehen. Dabei versuchte ich, mich in die Lage des Gesetzesverletzers hineinzuversetzen. Ich konnte mir einfach nicht denken, daß dieser so ungezwungen daherkam, seinen Ziegel in das Schaufenster schleuderte und sich dann in aller GemÜtsruhe das Beste aus der Auslage auswählte. Zum Kuckuck, ringsherum waren hohe drei- und viergeschossige Wohnbauten! Mir war es wieder einmal schleierhaft, daß das Scherbengeklirr von niemandem gehört wurde!
Irgendwo hier in der Nähe hatte er gewiß gestanden, auf den gÜnstigsten Augenblick gewartet, sich eine Zigarette angezÜndet . Übrigens, neunzig Prozent aller männlichen Gesetzesverletzer sind - nach einer internationalen Statistik - Raucher. Es sollte mich wundern, wenn ausgerechnet unser Unbekannter zu den restlichen zehn Prozent zählen sollte. Verbissen in diesen Gedanken, begann ich alle Tornischen in der Umgebung nach Tabakresten abzusuchen. Doch schon nach kurzer Zeit gab ich es auf. DrÜben auf der anderen Straßenseite stoppte unser Wartburg. Hinter Richter stieg ein kleiner korpulenter Herr mit einem breitkrempigen Hut aus dem Wagen. Ich ging Über die Straße, stellte mich ihm vor und bat um Entschuldigung fÜr die Störung seiner Nachtruhe, "öffnen Sie bitte, Herr Schörner, damit wir ein Verzeichnis der entwendeten Gegenstände anfertigen können!" Der Verkaufsstellenleiter nickte und schob sich aufschnaufend den Hut ins Genick. "Du meine GÜte, wie ist denn so etwas möglich?" meinte er kopfschÜttelnd und schaute mit offenem Mund die zertrÜmmerte Scheibe an. Im Laden selbst - das bestätigte uns Herr Schörner war alles unversehrt. Aus der Dekoration des erbrochenen Schaufensters war ein Tisch-Fernsehgerät Marke "Start" verschwunden. "Diesmal also ein Fernseher", bemerkte Richter auf der RÜckfahrt zum Kreisamt. ",Scherben-August', wie seid ihr bloß auf den Namen gekommen? Das ist doch kein August, sondern ein ganz ausgekochter und gewiefter Bursche!" "Den Namen hat ihm der Alte verpaßt", erwiderte ich. "Na, der wird morgen Augen machen!"

Der Alte - Verzeihung, ich meine den Leiter unserer Abteilung, Hauptmann Volkmer - machte tatsächlich Augen, als ich ihm am Morgen von unseren nächtlichen Ermittlungen berichtete. "Holen Sie mal KrÜger, Genosse Valeska", äußerte er nach einer Weile nachdenklichen Schweigens. "Ich glaube, es ist am besten, wenn wir uns alle gemeinsam einmal die ganze leidige Angelegenheit durch den Kopf gehen lassen." Fred KrÜger war gerade in unserem gemeinsamen Dienstzimmer eingetroffen. Er zeigte sich mehr verärgert als Überrascht, als ich ihm von dem nächtlichen Geschehen erzählte. "In einer solchen Regennacht, ich hätte mir das eigentlich denken können. Na, hoffentlich wäscht mir der Alte nicht den Kopf." Aber unser Vorgesetzter ist nicht der Mann, der von seinen Mitarbeitern einen sechsten Sinn erwartet. "Eines erscheint mir seltsam", sagte er und trat zu der mit bunten Fähnchen bespickten Stadtkarte, die die eine Wand seines Arbeitszimmers fast völlig ausfÜllte. "Alle EinbrÜche des ,Scherben-August' wurden bisher in regnerischen Nächten verÜbt. Das Ungewöhnliche aber ist, daß der Mann nicht in den Randgebieten sein Unwesen treibt, sondern, wie in der vergangenen Nacht, mitten im Zentrum, in einer Geschäftsstraße der Innenstadt!" Volkmer blieb vor der Karte stehen, beide Hände in den Taschen seiner Jacke vergraben. Ich konnte mir gut denken, daß er nicht gerade die allerbeste Laune hatte.
Ich sah zu KrÜger hinÜber. Auch er wÜrde sich jetzt gewiß nicht wohl fÜhlen in seiner Haut. Hatte er etwas Übersehen, war er nachlässig gewesen in seiner Arbeit? Ich wußte, daß er die Straftaten-Vergleichskartei ÜberprÜft hatte, daß er nach dem Verbleib der gestohlenen Waren sehr intensiv geforscht hatte . Ihn traf gewiß keine Schuld, daß diese Ermittlungssache noch immer unaufgeklärt war. "Mir scheint, als hätte ,Scherben-August' da eine ganz perfekte Masche gefunden", bemerkte Richter, den wir wegen seines schmalen Studentengesichtes, der respektablen Hornbrille und seiner blonden, wallenden Haarmähne auch den "Professor" nennen. Volkmer drehte sich langsam zu ihm herum. "Sie wissen doch, Genosse Richter, es gibt kein perfektes Verbrechen", entgegnete er lächelnd und streifte den "Professor" mit einem Blick. "Wenn ein Gesetzesverletzer mit einer neuen, ausgeklÜgelten Methode kommt, dann ist es unsere Pflicht, diese Methode zu analysieren. Über kurz oder lang werden wir ihm dann schon auf die Schliche kommen ." "Über kurz oder lang . der berÜhmte Krug, der so lange zu Wasser geht, bis er bricht", warf der "Professor", der gern das letzte Wort behielt, ironisch dazwischen. Volkmer Überhörte anscheinend diesen Einwurf und wandte sich wieder der Karte zu. "Fassen wir also zusammen: Der Täter arbeitete bisher stets in regnerischen Nächten, fÜr seine EinbrÜche benutzt er einen Ziegelstein als Tatwerkzeug, mit dem er Schaufensterscheiben einwirft, um dann relativ wertvolle Dinge aus den Dekorationsauslagen zu entwenden. In die erbrochenen Läden ist er bisher nicht eingestiegen. Was unsere Ermittlungen erschwert, ist, daß wir bisher weder eine Personenbeschreibung des
Täters haben noch irgendwelche verwertbaren Spuren an den Tatorten sichern konnten. Weiterhin haben wir auch nicht den geringsten Hinweis aus der Bevölkerung erhalten, daß einer der gestohlenen Gegenstände zum Verkauf angeboten wurde. Soweit also die Tatsachen." Volkmer hielt inne und sah einen nach dem anderen an. "So, jetzt kommen wir zu den Vermutungen. Zunächst einmal weist dieses alles darauf hin, daß es sich wahrscheinlich um einen Einzelgänger handelt. Daß die Sachfahndung bisher ohne Erfolg blieb, läßt den Schluß zu, daß der Täter die gestohlenen Waren selbst benutzt oder sie in einer anderen Stadt zum Verkauf anbietet." "Er benutzt sie wohl selbst", meldete sich KrÜger zu Wort, "darauf weist die Vielseitigkeit der gestohlenen Gegenstände hin. Wenn ,Scherben-August' auf einen möglichst hohen Verkaufserlös aus wäre, dann wÜrde er sich auf eine leicht absetzbare und trotzdem wertvolle Ware spezialisieren." "Richtig, Genosse KrÜger." Volkmer lächelte wohlwollend. "Sie haben Übrigens die Ermittlungen jetzt seit einem Vierteljahr in Ihren Händen. Sind Sie in dieser Hinsicht noch zu weiteren Schlußfolgerungen gekommen?" KrÜger schwieg. Sein sonst schon rötliches Gesicht färbte sich noch um einen Schein dunkler. "Haben Sie einmal den Versuch unternommen, sich in die Psyche des Täters zu versetzen?" bohrte Volkmer weiter. "NatÜrlich. Daß er zum Beispiel nie einen Laden betritt und sich stets mit etwas aus der Auslage begnÜgt, das zeugt von seiner Vorsicht. Vielleicht ist es ein Vorbestrafter, der jetzt auf ganz sichergehen will", gab KrÜger leise zur Antwort.
"Gut", sagte Volkmer, "und haben Sie vielleicht auch schon einmal darÜber nachgedacht, wieso das Scherbengeklirr selbst in den dichtesten Wohngebieten niemals gehört worden ist?" KrÜger zuckte mit den Achseln und schwieg erneut. "Ich bin gespannt, ob Sie uns dieses Rätsel erklären können, Genosse Hauptmann!" warf ich ein. Statt einer Antwort begann sich Volkmer seine Pfeife zu stopfen. Ebenso gemächlich zÜndete er sich den Feinschnitt an und winkte uns, an die Karte zu treten. An ihr waren die Stätten von "Scherben-Augusts" nächtlichem Wirken mit violetten Nadelfähnchen markiert worden. "Genossen, fällt Ihnen nichts auf?" fragte Volkmer, einen nach dem anderen von uns anblickend. Was war schon Auffälliges an den Markierungen? Die Tatorte lagen Über die ganze Stadt verstreut. "Einen bestimmten Bezirk bevorzugt der Täter nicht", wollte ich bemerken, doch Volkmer ließ mich den Satz nicht aussprechen. "Durch unsere Stadt fÜhren zwei Fernverkehrsstraßen, die F 184 und die F 185", sagte er und wies mit dem MundstÜck seiner Pfeife auf die Karte. "So, und jetzt betrachten Sie sich einmal ein violettes Fähnchen nach dem anderen!" Tatsächlich, der Chef hatte recht! Alle bisher von "Scherben-August" erbrochenen Läden lagen an den beiden Straßen! "Ein Zeichen also, daß der Täter einen Wagen besitzt!" folgerte Richter sofort. "Das ist zwar möglich, aber nicht das, worauf ich hinaus will", erwiderte Volkmer. "Ich bin vielmehr der Ansicht,
daß der Täter das Motorengeräusch der vorbeibrausenden Lkws fÜr seine EinbrÜche ausnutzt!" Wir sahen uns verblÜfft an. "Soll das möglich sein", meinte KrÜger zögernd. "Das Klirren einer zerberstenden Schaufensterscheibe sollte von dem Motorengeräusch Übertönt werden?" Volkmer wandte sich uns zu. "Der Lärm eines Motors vermag noch ganz andere Geräusche zu Übertönen als eine zerspringende Fensterscheibe", sagte er. "Keine hundert Meter von hier befand sich einst der Gestapokeller. Als die Nazis dreiunddreißig ihre Hetzjagd gegen Kommunisten, Sozialdemokraten und Juden begannen, stand dort auf dem Hof ein Motorrad. Ein schweres fÜnfhunderter D-Rad, das Tag und Nacht lief ." Volkmer schwieg und musterte uns mit zusammengezogenen Brauen. "Könnt ihr euch denken, warum?" Im Zimmer entstand ein betretenes Schweigen. FÜr einen Augenblick wurde uns die Vergangenheit unseres Abteilungsleiters gegenwärtig, eine Vergangenheit voller Kampf und Entsagung, die Volkmer in ein Konzentrationslager gefÜhrt hatte. "Genosse KrÜger, Sie wissen also, worauf Sie achten sollten", durchbrach Volkmer die beklemmende Stille. Dann wandte er sich mir zu und ergänzte: "Genosse Oberleutnant, es ist wohl am besten, wenn Sie unserem jungen Freund bei der Klärung dieses Falles mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stehen!" KrÜger und ich, wir beide versprachen, uns die größte MÜhe zu geben, und verabschiedeten uns.

Wir ÜberprÜften zunächst noch einmal die StraftatenVergleichskartei. KrÜgers Standpunkt, daß es sich bei "Scherben-August" um einen alten Routinier handeln könnte, war nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Andererseits konnte die Übertriebene Vorsicht ebensogut auf einen Anfänger deuten. LadeneinbrÜche hatten wir in unserer Stadt in den letzten Jahren kaum noch zu verzeichnen gehabt. Erschwerend fÜr uns war, daß bisher keiner der ÜberfÜhrten Täter "Scherben-Augusts" fast simpel anmutende Methodik angewendet hatte. Trotzdem entschlossen wir uns, drei ehemalige Gesetzesverletzer eingehend zu beleuchten, die in den vergangenen Jahren durch eine Reihe von EinbrÜchen von sich reden gemacht hatten und bereits wieder vom Strafvollzug entlassen worden waren. Zwei dieser Fälle hatte ich damals selbst bearbeitet. Deshalb entschloß ich mich auch, bei ihnen nach dem Rechten zu sehen. Als erstes studierte ich noch einmal die Ermittlungsakten, um mir meine "alten Bekannten" wieder gut in Erinnerung zu bringen. Da war Erich Stickdorn, jetzt vierundfÜnfzig Jahre alt, Gelegenheitsarbeiter. Er hatte bereits meinem Vorgänger reichlich Beschäftigung verschafft. Ich konnte ihm damals achtzehn Einsteigediebstähle in Gaststätten und Geschäften nachweisen. Zumeist öffnete er kurz vor Ladenschluß Toilettenfenster, um dann in der Nacht wieder zurÜckzukehren . Vier Jahre Gefängnis waren die Quittung dafÜr; seit einem halben Jahr war er wieder auf freiem Fuß. Hatten Stickdorns damalige EinbrÜche etwas Gemein-
sames mit dem Vorgehen von "Scherben-August"? Kaum - bis auf zwei Dinge: Seit einem halben Jahr trieb "Scherben-August" sein Unwesen, ja, und Stickdorns alte Einsteigemasche war ebenso einfach gewesen. Der zweite, Wolfgang Neitzke, mit vierundzwanzig Lenzen ein relativ junger Bursche, hatte sich durch das Aufbrechen von Imbißhallen den Namen "Kioskknacker" erworben. Es gelang mir seinerzeit verhältnismäßig schnell, Neitzke auf frischer Tat zu stellen. Schon beim Lesen seiner Ermittlungskarte erschien es mir unsinnig, daß er mit "Scherben-August" identisch sein könnte. Ich erledigte die ÜberprÜfung seines Leumunds dann auch sofort. Von der Kaderleitung eines kleinen Betriebes erfuhr ich, daß Wolfgang Neitzke seit seiner Haftentlassung pÜnktlich und gewissenhaft seiner Arbeit nachgehe, außerdem seit kurzem verheiratet und vor wenigen Tagen Vater eines kleinen Jungen geworden sei. Trotz der Fehlanzeige freute ich mich, als ich Neitzkes Ermittlungsakte wieder einordnen konnte. Ich sah den bleichen jungen Menschen wieder vor mir, wie er stokkend und mit niedergeschlagenen Augen Straftat fÜr Straftat zugab. Er hatte mir seinerzeit schon leid getan, und ich hatte bei der Überweisung seiner Akte an die Staatsanwaltschaft auf seine reuige und geständige Haltung hingewiesen. Ich freute mich, daß er jetzt offensichtlich auf dem richtigen Weg war. Da erschien es schon angebrachter, mich mit meinem alten Bekannten Erich Stickdorn näher zu befassen. In der Zentralen Meldestelle erfuhr ich, daß Erich Stickdorn jetzt im SÜden unserer Stadt in der Wohnung einer vor einigen Monaten geschiedenen Frau zur Untermiete wohnte. Diese Angaben waren natÜrlich fÜr meine Zwecke
zu kärglich, und so suchte ich den zuständigen ABV auf, um noch einiges mehr Über das jetzige Leben Erich Stickdorns zu erfahren. Ein Abschnittsbevollmächtigter der Deutschen Volkspolizei lebt mitten unter den Menschen seines Wirkungsbereiches. Viele dieser Menschen kennt er persönlich, steht mit ihnen sozusagen auf du und du. Außerdem unterstÜtzt ihn eine Gruppe von ehrenamtlichen Helfern bei seiner verantwortungsvollen Tätigkeit. Der ABV erfährt und weiß darum auch viel von den kleinen, oft unscheinbaren Geschehnissen in seinem Wohnbezirk, von denen der Fremde erst nach vielen Umfragen oder Überhaupt keine Kenntnis erlangen wÜrde. So ist der Abschnittsbevollmächtigte in vielen Fällen der wichtigste Helfer des Kriminalisten. Von Leutnant Gerecke, dem Abschnittsbevollmächtigten von Stickdorns Wohnbezirk, bekam ich auch weitere Angaben, die in mir allerdings Zweifel aufkommen ließen, ob mein alter Bekannter mit "Scherben-August" identisch sein könnte: Nach Gereckes Erkundigungen schien auch Erich Stickdorn ein neues Leben begonnen zu haben. Nach seiner Haftentlassung vor einem halben Jahr hatte er im VEB Kohlenhandel als Entlader zu arbeiten begonnen. Die Betriebsleitung könne nichts Nachteiliges Über ihn berichten. Ich fragte, wie er sich im Wohnbezirk verhalte. Gerecke lächelte. "Auch ich habe keinen Grund zur Klage, Genosse Oberleutnant. Genaueres weiß ich nicht, nur das eine Über neunundneunzig Ecken: Mit seiner Zimmerwirtin soll er wohl ein Verhältnis haben. GenÜgt Ihnen das?" NatÜrlich genÜgte mir das nicht.
So stieg ich denn in einem älteren, hohen Mietshaus den halbdunklen Treppenflur empor und verhielt im zweiten Stock vor einer rotbraun lackierten TÜr. Auf einem weißen Emailleschild stand in großen schwarzen Buchstaben: JOHANNA MENZEL Darunter, mit vier Reißzwecken befestigt, gab ein Zettel mit säuberlich gemalten Blockbuchstaben mir den Rat: ERICH STICKDORN, 2 X klingeln. Eine zierliche Frau öffnete. Ich schätzte sie gegen Ende der Dreißig. Das dunkle Kleid kontrastierte angenehm mit ihrem hellen Teint. Ihr Blick verriet Mißtrauen und - oder täuschte ich mich? Angst. "Ja?" "Ist Herr Stickdorn zu Hause?" fragte ich.
"Nein. Kann ich etwas ausrichten?" Ich zeigte Frau Menzel meinen Ausweis, und nun sah ich, daß ich mich nicht getäuscht hatte. Sie erschrak und stammelte: "Aber wieso .? Hat Erich etwa wieder .?" Es gelang mir sehr schnell, die Frau zu beruhigen. Ich erklärte ihr wahrheitsgetreu, daß ich in einer Ermittlungssache lediglich einige RoutineÜberprÜfungen vornehmen mÜsse, daß gegen Herrn Stickdorn nicht das geringste vorliege ." "Aber kommen Sie doch rein, Herr .?" "Valeska, Oberleutnant Valeska", stellte ich mich vor. Die Wohnung zeugte von der Ordentlichkeit der Hausfrau. Die KÜchentÜr, an der wir vorbeischritten, war geöffnet. Ich erfaßte mit kurzem Blick den glänzenden Fußboden, die bunten Gardinen, das geblÜmte Tuch und die Vase mit Sommerblumen auf dem Tisch. Auch das Zimmer, das ich kurz darauf betrat, war blitzsauber. Frau Menzel bot mir einen Sessel an. "Hier ist Erichs Zimmer. Wenn Sie vielleicht etwas warten wollen. Eigentlich mÜßte er in einer halben Stunde hier sein." "An und fÜr sich wÜrden mir einige AuskÜnfte genÜgen, Frau Menzel", sagte ich und nahm Platz.
Eine Viertelstunde später befand ich mich schon wieder auf dem Wege ins Kreisamt. Sieh an, dieser Stickdorn, sinnierte ich, während ich auf dem Perron eines Straßenbahnwagens in das Zentrum zurÜckfuhr. Ich hatte mich wohl doch in ihm getäuscht. Sein Charakter und sein ansehnliches Vorstrafenregister hatten eigentlich befÜrchten lassen, daß er es nicht allzulange in der Freiheit aushalten wÜrde. Man hatte sich in den Nachkriegsjahren wahrlich viel
MÜhe gegeben, ihn in ein geordnetes Leben zurÜckzufÜhren. Leider damals vergebens. Ich mußte an den Untersuchungsgefangenen Erich Stickdorn denken, an den großen, grobschlächtigen Mann, der jähzornig, leicht reizbar und dabei so aalglatt meine damalige Ermittlungsarbeit ganz schön erschwert hatte. Nach bewährtem Rezept pflegte er stets nur das einzugestehen, was hundertprozentig bewiesen war. Eitel und rot wie ein Truthahn war er vor Empörung stets von seinem Sitz hochgeschnellt, wenn man auch nur den leisesten Verdacht eines weiteren Vergehens andeutete. Nein, diesen Herrn Stickdorn hatte ich keineswegs in guter Erinnerung. Nun war also eine kleine, unscheinbare Frau in sein Leben getreten, eine Frau, die selbst erst eine herbe Enttäuschung mit einem Mann hinter sich hatte. Den Namen Erich Stickdorn konnte ich also streichen, nach all dem, was ich gesehen und gehört hatte. Und doch, ein leiser Zweifel blieb! Erich Stickdorn, jetzt ein braver, solider Mensch auf dem Rosenpfad ins EheglÜck? Es paßte nicht zu dem Bild, das ich mir von diesem Manne gemacht hatte. Wenig ergiebig war auch, was mir Fred KrÜger Über seine Nachforschungen berichtete: Der dritte, den wir aus der Straftaten-Vergleichskartei herausgefischt hatten, konnte ebenfalls nicht das Geringste mit "Scherben-Augusts" nächtlichen EinbrÜchen zu tun haben. Werner Desch, einstmals ein versierter Ladeneinbrecher, arbeitete seit seiner Haftentlassung auf einer Großbaustelle an der Oder. Die AuskÜnfte Über ihn ließen zwar nicht erkennen, ob er aus der Vergangenheit gelernt hatte; fÜr unsere Ermittlungen jedoch war wesentlich, daß Desch
sich in der vergangenen Nacht, zur Tatzeit also, in Schwedt aufgehalten hatte. Wir waren genau dort wieder angelangt, wo wir am Vormittag nach unserer Arbeitsbesprechung mit Volkmer begonnen hatten. "So ein Reinfall!" meinte ich gähnend, denn mein Körper meldete nun doch sein Recht auf Schlaf. "Warten wir auf die nächste Regennacht", versuchte KrÜger meine Enttäuschung zu zerstreuen. "Sicher wird sie ,Scherben-August' erneut zu nutzen versuchen. Ich habe mir da etwas Nettes fÜr ihn einfallen lassen." 4
Die Wetterpropheten hatten recht behalten. Tiefhängende dunkle Wolken bedeckten den nächtlichen Himmel, und unaufhörlich klatschte der Regen auf das Mosaikpflaster der BÜrgersteige. Ich stand in einem Hauseingang in der Straße der Deutsch-Sowjetischen Freundschaft. TagsÜber herrschte hier reges Leben, aber jetzt erschien hier alles wie ausgestorben. Es war Mitternacht, zehn Minuten vor Mitternacht. Ich steckte den Kopf aus meiner Nische, versuchte etwas von Richter, unserem "Professor", zu entdecken, der in einer Toreinfahrt am anderen Ende der gut beleuchteten Geschäftsstraße lauerte. DrÜben auf der anderen Seite löschte gerade die Gaststätte "Zur Alten Post" ihre Lichtreklame, und ab und zu kamen aus der noch spärlich beleuchteten PendeltÜr einige Leute, die sich mehr oder minder schwankend auf den Heimweg machten.
Viertel nach zwölf. Wir hatten also noch Zeit. Die meisten EinbrÜche von "Scherben-August" waren zwischen ein und zwei Uhr morgens verÜbt worden. Ich richtete mein Augenmerk wieder auf die Gaststätte, in deren TÜr jetzt erneut ein später Zecher auftauchte. Auf einmal stutzte ich. Die kleine, hagere und leicht vornÜbergebeugte Figur, der graue, fÜr seinen zierlichen Träger etwas zu groß geratene Wettermantel, die dunkle SchirmmÜtze mit dem schmalen, spitzmäusigen Gesicht darunter - das alles kam mir sehr bekannt vor.
Die Gestalt machte sich an dem letzten an der Gaststättenfassade lehnenden Fahrrad zu schaffen und kam kurz darauf mit seinem Vehikel in ziemlichem Schlingerschritt Über den Fahrdamm. Und nun erkannte ich auch, wer da auf mich zu torkelte! Es war der alte Buschmann, der mir einige Nächte zuvor in meinem Dienstzimmer gegenÜbergesessen hatte.
Er hatte mich anscheinend nicht bemerkt, denn nur einige Schritte von mir entfernt machte er etwas komisch wirkende Anstalten, sein Fahrrad zu besteigen. "Na, Herr Buschmann, gehen Sie lieber zu Fuß, das ist sicherer!" riet ich laut aus meiner Ecke. Der Alte, der eben in einem artistisch anmutenden BravourstÜck den Sattel erklommen hatte, stoppte verdattert. Ich trat aus meiner Nische hervor und auf Buschmann zu. "Na, noch kleine Nachfeier vom letztenmal?" scherzte ich. Buschmann stierte mich an. "Ach, Herr Kommissar, das ist aber 'ne Überraschung!" lallte er, als er endlich mitbekommen hatte, wer da vor ihm stand. "Das finde ich auch", erwiderte ich und gab Buschmann noch einmal den wohlgemeinten Rat, abzusteigen und den Heimweg zu Fuß zurÜckzulegen. "Eigentlich mÜßte ich Sie wohl mit unserem Wagen nach Hause bringen lassen", setzte ich mit Nachdruck hinzu. "Diesmal aber auf Ihre Kosten!" Davon wollte der Alte aber partout nichts wissen. "So schlimm ist es doch gar nicht", beteuerte er und versuchte auch gleich zu beweisen, daß er sich noch ziemlich gerade auf den Beinen halten konnte. Ich ließ ihn laufen, sah ihm nach, bis er um die nächste Ecke verschwand, und kehrte wieder zu meiner Beobachtungsnische zurÜck. Mir kam der Gedanke, daß Buschmann eventuell etwas mit den EinbrÜchen zu tun haben könnte. Aber diese nächtliche Begegnung war sicherlich nur ein Zufall. Die Minuten dehnten sich eintönig, ohne daß etwas Besonderes geschah. DrÜben auf der anderen Straßenseite sicherte der Wirt seine Gaststätte ab und hastete dann eilig
durch den noch immer heftigen Regen davon. Hin und wieder tauchte ein Pkw oder ein Lastzug auf und rauschte vorÜber. Vom Rathaus schlug es ein Uhr. Eine Viertelstunde verging in völliger Stille; dann näherte sich eine schwankende Gestalt vom Marktplatz her und riet einem Heideröslein in Straßenlautstärke, daß es sich in acht nehmen solle. Ein schwerer Horch brauste heran und verschluckte das Gegröl. Unser gecharterter Wagen! Ich sah das rundliche Gesicht KrÜgers am Kabinenfenster. Er gab mir kopfschÜttelnd zu verstehen, daß sich noch nichts Bedeutsames ereignet hätte. Als der Horch vorÜber war, konnte ich einige Minuten zuschauen, wie schwer es manchmal sein kann, ein SchlÜsselloch in der Dunkelheit zu finden. Mein später Sänger kam ganz schön in Rage, und ich war erstaunt, zu welchen leidenschaftlichen Äußerungen ein Mensch fähig ist, wenn er seine HaustÜr nicht aufbekommt. Endlich aber hatte er es geschafft, und es wurde wieder ruhig. Es mochte so gegen zwei Uhr geworden sein, als sich der von uns beim VEB Kraftverkehr gecharterte Horch erneut näherte. Er verlangsamte seine Fahrt und hielt. Der Schlag öffnete sich, und KrÜger steckte seinen Kopf hervor. "Was ist los?" fragte ich, an den Wagen herantretend. "Willst du schon aufstecken, Fred?" "Ich glaube nicht, daß es noch Zweck hat", antwortete KrÜger. "Ziemlich lauer Verkehr heute nacht. Versuchen wir es ein anderes Mal." Der Ansicht war ich auch. Richter war ebenfalls schon von KrÜger von seinem Warteposten erlöst worden. "Wir können ja noch einmal die Stadt durchqueren", schlug er vor. "Auf eine Viertelstunde kommt es nun auch nicht
mehr an!" "Danach bringen wir aber den Wagen zurÜck und machen, daß wir in die Falle kommen." Der Ärger Über die bisher ergebnislose Aktion schwang in KrÜgers Stimme. Wir fuhren los. KrÜger, die Hände am Steuer, streifte mit den Augen den RÜckspiegel, Richter blickte durch das hintere Kabinenfenster, während ich die rechte Straßenseite beobachtete. Naßglänzender Asphalt, Neonreklame, erleuchtete Schaufenster, auf der langen Fahrt nur ein einziger Passant, der es eilig hatte, durch den unablässig herniedergehenden Regen nach Hause zu kommen. Ich glaube, daß es gerade diese menschenleeren nächtlichen Straßen waren, die "Scherben-August" zu seinem frechen Tun ermunterten. Doch wo blieb er heute? War er in dieser fÜr ihn so gÜnstigen Nacht nicht unterwegs - oder stimmte Volkmers Hypothese nicht? Sosehr wir unsere Augen und Ohren auch anstrengten, hinter unserem durch die schlafende Stadt donnernden Wagen blieb alles ruhig. "Pech", meinte ich resignierend, als wir die Stadt fast durchfahren hatten und uns der Ausfallstraße nach Norden näherten, "da hinten kommen noch ein paar Lädehen, und dann wird es zappendÜster ." "Halt!" Ich zuckte von KrÜgers jähem Ausruf zusammen. Ehe ich Überhaupt begriff, was eigentlich los war, wurde ich von dem Druck des scharf gebremsten Wagens nach vorn gegen das Armaturenbrett geschleudert. "Los, raus!" schrie KrÜger. Bevor ich mich hochrappeln konnte, war er schon draußen. Als ich aus der Fahrerkabine sprang, hatte KrÜger
bereits zwanzig Schritte Vorsprung. Richter folgte mir. Ich lief, erfaßte erst jetzt die flÜchtende Gestalt etwa fÜnfzig Meter vor uns auf der anderen Straßenseite . Erst einige Stunden später erfuhr ich von KrÜger, daß auch er nicht das Klirren der Schaufensterscheibe gehört hatte, die der Unbekannte unweit von unserem Lkw einwarf. Ihm fiel nur auf, wie hinter einer Litfaßsäule ein Mann hervortrat und, nicht einmal hastig, davonging. Bruchteile einer Sekunde später jedoch entdeckte KrÜger die geborstene Scheibe eines Industriewarenladens, und auch nur deshalb, weil diese erleuchtet war! Wie erwähnt, dies berichtete mir KrÜger einige Stunden später im Amt. Als wir den Wagen verlassen hatten, blieb uns keine Zeit zu langen Gesprächen. Die Straße war äußerst gÜnstig fÜr den FlÜchtigen. Es war eine breite Geschäftsstraße der zerbombten Altstadt, in der hier und da noch abgeräumte TrÜmmerflächen zwischen den Häusern klafften. Da, jetzt verschwand der Unbekannte in solch einer LÜcke! Keuchend langten wir bei KrÜger an, der seine Waffe aus dem Schulterhalfter gezogen hatte und in seiner Rechten hielt. Er beauftragte Richter, die Funkstreife zu alarmieren, während ich in der nächsten HäuserlÜcke verschwinden sollte, um dort aufs Geratewohl die Verfolgung aufzunehmen. KrÜger selbst wollte dem Unbekannten auf direktem Wege nach. Ich lief weiter, bog hinter einem einstöckigen ParfÜmerieladen in ein abgeräumtes GrundstÜck ein, das im Laufe der Zeit von dichtem, mannshohem Gesträuch Überwuchert war. Ich mußte die Taschenlampe zu Hilfe nehmen. Hinter dem GestrÜpp kletterte ich Über eine Mauer, stand
plötzlich in einem Garten und verharrte, nach Luft japsend . Stille. Nur das Rauschen des Regens. Wo blieb KrÜger! Irgend etwas mußte doch zu hören sein! Da - ein Rascheln. Schemenhaft erkannte ich in der Finsternis die Gestalt eines Menschen. KrÜger? Nein, der war ja klein und untersetzt, dieser aber hochgewachsen, massig! Etwas unÜberlegt, einer jähen Regung folgend, hob ich die Waffe . Der Unbekannte hielt genau auf mich zu, kam langsam näher . Bis auf dreißig Schritt ließ ich ihn herankommen, dann: "Halt! Deutsche Volkspolizei! Bleiben Sie stehen!" Alles andere geschah blitzschnell. Der Unbekannte warf sich zu Boden; ich reagierte ebenso. Ich war wÜtend auf mich selbst. Hätte ich ihn doch näher herankommen lassen! Sicher hätte er dann diese Sperenzien nicht gewagt! Nun mußte ich mir, mit einem nicht sonderlich wohlen GefÜhl in der Magengegend, die Augen anstrengen, um den Kerl vor mir zu entdecken! Dazu diese Dunkelheit, der Regen, das Gesträuch! Ein leises Geräusch jedoch verriet mir, daß sich mein Widersacher von mir fortbewegte. "Los, kommen Sie hoch!" forderte ich ihn auf, und als dies nichts nÜtzte, wiederholte ich es noch einmal, einen Akzent schärfer: "Nun kommen Sie schon! Jede Flucht ist aussichtslos! Das GrundstÜck ist umstellt!" Der Bursche durchschaute wohl meinen Bluff. Er dachte nicht daran, meinen Rat zu befolgen. Es raschelte weiter. Rechts von mir sah ich die Konturen eines Gartenhauses aus dem GestrÜpp ragen. Wo nur KrÜger so lange blieb!
War er vielleicht sogar in die entgegengesetzte Richtung .? Ich schoß in die Luft. Eine kleine Warnung fÜr mein GegenÜber, hauptsächlich aber zur Orientierung fÜr KrÜger. "Halt! Stehenbleiben!" hörte ich es auf einmal vom Gartenhaus her rufen. Das war KrÜgers Stimme. Ich schnellte hoch, blieb irgendwo, wahrscheinlich an einer Himbeerranke, mit meinem Mantel hängen, riß mich los, hastete weiter, auf einen starkstämmigen Baum zu, prallte gegen etwas Weiches, riß instinktiv die Arme nach oben und griff fest zu. "Mensch, Valeska, bist du verrÜckt!" Ich ließ los. Es war KrÜger. "Los, auf die andere Seite der Laube! Der Bursche steckt drin!" flÜsterte er erregt. In gebÜckter Haltung lief ich um das Gartenhaus herum. Dort bemerkte ich ein Fenster, dessen Läden geschlossen waren. "Machen Sie keinen Unsinn, Mann! Los, kommen Sie raus!" hörte ich KrÜger von der anderen Seite rufen. Vorsichtig trat ich an das Fenster heran, im Moment noch unschlÜssig, wie ich mich weiter verhalten sollte. Plötzlich erhielt ich einen so heftigen Schlag gegen den Kopf, daß ich zurÜcktaumelte. Eine dunkle Wand schien auf mich zuzukommen . Ein, zwei Sekunden später erst merkte ich, daß mir der eine FlÜgel des Fensterladens gegen die Stirn geprallt war. Trotz meiner Benommenheit und der vor Schmerz tränenden Augen bemerkte ich, daß sich der Unbekannte keine zehn Meter von mir entfernt durch das Gesträuch arbeitete.
"Halt! Stehenbleiben!" schrie ich. Im gleichen Augenblick steckte der Fremde auf. Er blieb stehen, beide Arme nach oben gestreckt. Neben mir tauchte KrÜger auf. "Keine Bewegung, mein Herr, sonst knallt's!" keuchte er ziemlich bissig. Das Weitere vollzog sich ohne jeden Zwischenfall. Während KrÜger von hinten sicherte, trat ich an den Unbekannten heran, zog seine Arme nach vorn. Die Handschellen klickten. Der Mann atmete noch immer schwer, als ich ihn abtastete. Eine Waffe trug er nicht bei sich. In der Innentasche des Jacketts fand ich die Papiere. Der Schein von KrÜgers Handstrahler beleuchtete ein dickliches, älteres Gesicht das ich gut kannte! "Das ist aber eine Überraschung!" stieß ich verblÜfft hervor. "Ich hatte nicht gedacht, daß wir uns so schnell einmal wiedersehen, Herr Stickdorn!" 5
Bei Vernehmungen von Gesetzesverletzern habe ich schon die wunderlichsten Erfahrungen sammeln können. Ich entsinne mich eines Falles, wo wir einen Achtzehnjährigen bei einem Fahrraddiebstahl auf frischer Tat ertappten. Gleich nach seiner Festnahme fÜhrten wir eine Durchsuchung seines Elternhauses durch, weil schon seit längerer Zeit ein Fahrradmarder in unserer Stadt sein Unwesen trieb. Diese Durchsuchung verlief ergebnislos, und nicht das geringste Indiz wies darauf hin, daß es sich bei dem festgenommenen Burschen um den gesuchten Fahrradmarder handeln konnte.
Nach der Durchsuchung des Hauses hatte ich die Vernehmung des jungen Mannes vorzunehmen, der nach wie vor bestritt, außer diesem einen Rad noch weitere gestohlen zu haben. Ehrlich gesagt, ich glaubte ihm ohne weiteres, so bleich und reuig, wie er da vor meinem Schreibtisch hockte. FÜr ihn sprach außerdem die Tatsache, daß er bisher unbescholten war und wir im Hause seiner Eltern nichts Verdächtiges hatten finden können. Ich wollte also das Protokoll so schnell wie möglich abschließen und danach den jungen Mann wieder auf freien Fuß setzen lassen. Doch es kam anders, ganz anders . Als ich beim Niederschreiben der Personalien mich nach dem Geburtsdatum und dem Beruf seines Vaters erkundigte, erwähnte ich beiläufig und keineswegs mit irgendwelchen Nebenabsichten, wie leid mir der alte Mann bei unserem Besuch getan hätte. Der Vater des Burschen, ein Schneidermeister, der noch nie mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt geraten war, hatte wie ein Kind zu weinen begonnen, als wir ihm die traurige Mitteilung machen mußten, daß sein einziger Sohn in der Stadt ein Fahrrad entwendet habe. Kaum hatte ich dem Burschen diese fÜr mich tatsächlich ergreifende Szene geschildert, da wurde dieser plötzlich von einem heftigen Weinkrampf geschÜttelt. "Er hat nichts damit zu tun!" schrie er mehrere Male hysterisch, um dann hemmungslos vor sich hinzuschluchzen. Als er sich dann wieder beruhigt hatte, gestand er das ganze Ausmaß seiner Taten: zweiundachtzig Fahrraddiebstähle, die er im Auftrag eines älteren Komplizen, der sich meisterhaft auf das Umfrisieren von Rädern verstand, begangen hatte.
Diese Geschichte liegt schon lange zurÜck, etwa viereinhalb bis fÜnf Jahre. Ich war damals mit dem noch frischen Abschlußdiplom der Fachschule fÜr Kriminaltechnik als Unterleutnant in unsere Abteilung gekommen, hatte einen Ballast theoretischen Wissens im Gehirn, doch in der Praxis war ich noch etwas grÜn hinter den Ohren. Ich habe mir diesen Fall besonders gut gemerkt, weil ich seitdem begann, meine Vernehmungen anders als vorher durchzufÜhren. Ich versuchte von meinen bisherigen Routinefragen loszukommen, den Weg zum Herzen des Gesetzesverletzers zu finden, ihm als verständnisvoller, hilfsbereiter Mitmensch gegenÜberzutreten. Ich bemÜhte mich, den guten Kern meiner GegenÜber anzusprechen, suchte ihre guten Saiten zum Klingen zu bringen, erkundigte mich nach ihren Leidenschaften, Hobbys und geheimen WÜnschen, versuchte aber vor allen Dingen immer Klarheit darÜber zu erlangen, warum sie Überhaupt auf die Straße des Verbrechens gelangt waren und was ich tun könnte, um sie von dort zurÜckzuholen. Ich muß gestehen, daß dies nicht immer leicht fÜr mich war, daß es RÜckschläge und herbe Enttäuschungen gab. In den meisten Fällen aber gelang es mir, eine BrÜcke des Vertrauens zwischen den Gestrauchelten und mir zu bauen. So, und damit wären wir wieder beim Fall "ScherbenAugust", bei Erich Stickdorn! Er gehörte zu diesen Ausnahmen, er zählte nach wie vor zu jenen, die sich erst nach einem hundertprozentigen Beweis zu einem Geständnis bewegen ließen. Eigentlich lag der Sachverhalt klar, auch ohne Stickdorns Geständnis. Allein, daß wir ihn während der Tat erwischt hatten und er sich seiner Festnahme durch die
Flucht hatte entziehen wollen, machte ihn im höchsten Maße verdächtig. Außerdem hatten wir wiederum einen Ziegelbrocken in der Auslage des Industriewarenladens gefunden. Alles sprach also fÜr die Täterschaft Erich Stickdorns! Konnte ich ahnen, daß in unserer scheinbaren Beweiskette doch das bekannte i-TÜpfelchen fehlte? Was ich allerdings ahnte, nein, schon auf unserer RÜckfahrt ins Kreisamt mit Bestimmtheit wußte, war, daß uns ein harter Kampf bevorstand, daß wir an diesem Morgen nicht mehr zum Schlafen kommen sollten. So war es denn auch. Obwohl alles gegen ihn sprach, gab sich Stickdorn nicht geschlagen. Massig und schwer, das bleiche fÜllige Gesicht anklagend gegen uns erhoben, hockte er auf seinem Stuhl und leugnete, leugnete, leugnete . Wir mÜhten uns vier Stunden mit ihm. Vergeblich. Stickdorn hatte fÜr jede unserer Fragen eine Antwort. Wo er um diese ungewöhnliche Zeit hergekommen sei .? Nun, er hätte bis Mitternacht in einer Kneipe am Nordrand der Stadt unweit des Tatortes gesessen. Ja, das könnten wir ruhig nachprÜfen! - Und von Mitternacht bis zwei Uhr .? Ihm wäre schlecht gewesen, und er hätte sich auf einer Bank verschnauft und sei dann eingeschlafen. - Bei diesem Platzregen auf einer Bank .? Ein kurzes, nachdenkliches Zögern, dann: Die bewußte Bank befinde sich in einer Wartehalle der Straßenbahn keine fÜnf Minuten von dem erbrochenen Laden. Die GrÜnde fÜr seine Flucht? Ja, auch er hätte das Klirren der Scheibe gehört, sich erschrocken umgedreht und einen Schatten in einer HäuserlÜcke verschwinden sehen. Erst als er das Stoppen des Wagens vernahm, sei er losgerannt. - Warum? Ob wir uns das nicht selber denken
könnten?! Er mit seinen vielen Vorstrafen in dieser verfänglichen Situation! Wenn die Sache nicht so ernst gewesen wäre, man hätte immerfort lachen können Über das Schauspiel, das uns Stickdorn bot. Dazu mimte Richter den Unbeteiligten; KrÜger aber - der Stickdorn noch nicht kannte - gab sich redliche MÜhe, ihn auf taktvolle Weise zu einem Geständnis zu bewegen. Er drang in ihn, zählte ruhig und beherrscht immer wieder die Fakten auf, die eindeutig fÜr seine Schuld sprachen. Flocht ich einmal eine Frage ein, so vermied es Stickdorn, mir in die Augen zu sehen. Er wußte wohl nur zu gut, was ich von seinem Geschwätz hielt. In KrÜger aber erblickte er scheinbar das geeignete Medium fÜr seine LÜgentiraden. Mehrmals beteuerte er, daß er seiner Arbeit nachgehe, daß er aus der Vergangenheit gelernt habe und daß man ihn doch endlich in Ruhe lassen solle. Langsam ging mir die Komödie auf die Nerven. Kein Wunder, die durchwachte Nacht . "Mann, nun spielen Sie hier bloß nicht den geläuterten schweren Jungen!" fuhr ich ihn an. Stickdorns fÜlliges Gesicht wurde kantig. Er schob das Kinn vor, seine grauen Augen blitzten vor Zorn. "Ich weiß, daß Sie mir jetzt gern etwas anhängen möchten, weil Sie damals so viel Scherereien mit mir hatten! Aber diesmal sind Sie auf dem verkehrten Dampfer, jawoll! Ich habe mit der Sache nichts zu tun, wie oft soll ich das noch sagen; es ist weiter nichts als ein unglÜcklicher Zufall! Ich bin wegen guter FÜhrung vorzeitig entlassen worden, habe meine gute Arbeit, und nun kommen Sie, weil Sie zu unfähig sind, den richtigen ."
"Seien Sie still!" herrschte ich ihn an und trat auf ihn zu. "Glauben Sie bloß nicht, daß wir uns Ihre Unverschämtheiten noch länger anhören!" Ich drehte mich um, fingerte nach meiner Zigarettenpakkung und bemerkte ärgerlich, wie meine Hand beim AnzÜnden des Stäbchens zitterte. Richter lächelte spöttisch. KrÜger warf mir einen mißbilligenden Blick zu. "Drohungen, ja, das kenne ich, damit sind Sie ganz groß, wenn Sie nicht mehr weiterkönnen!" dröhnte es hinter mir. "Schweigen Sie, schweigen Sie endlich!" schrie ich unbeherrscht - auf einmal stand Volkmer in der TÜr. Er sagte nichts, aber seine Augen tadelten mein Verhalten. Volkmer bat KrÜger in sein Arbeitszimmer, wahrscheinlich, um sich von ihm Über unsere nächtlichen Ermittlungen berichten zu lassen. Ich hielt es fÜr zwecklos, weiter in Stickdorn zu dringen, stellte mich ans Fenster und blickte mit mÜrrischem Gesicht in den neuen Tag. Als Volkmer mit KrÜger zurÜckkehrte, sprang Stickdorn sofort auf, um seine Beschwerden an den Mann zu bringen. Volkmer stoppte den Wortschwall mit einer resoluten Handbewegung, betrachtete sich das auf dem Schreibtisch liegende Corpus delicti und fragte dann Richter, wo der Mantel des Festgenommenen sei. Der völlig durchnäßte Gabardinemantel Stickdorns befand sich auf einem Haken im Flur, wo er abtropfen sollte. "Der Stein dort ist völlig trocken", wandte sich Volkmer an Richter, "irgendwie muß ihn ja der Täter vor dem Regen geschÜtzt bei sich getragen haben. Hatte er eine Aktentasche?" Richter schÜttelte den Kopf.
"Haben Sie die Manteltasche nach Mörtelstaub oder Druckstellen abgesucht?" Wir blickten uns betroffen an. Tatsächlich, vier volle Stunden vernahmen wir jetzt Stickdorn, aber auf das Nächstliegende war noch keiner von uns gekommen! Vielleicht, weil uns dies bei der FÜlle von Indizien gar nicht mehr notwendig erschien. "Wird sofort besorgt, Genosse Hauptmann", versicherte Richter und eilte aus dem Zimmer. "Nun wird sich ja meine Unschuld endlich herausstellen", ließ sich Stickdorn mit selbstsicherer Stimme vernehmen. "Herr Stickdorn, daß wir Sie bis zur endgÜltigen Klärung des Tatbestandes hierbehalten mÜssen, werden Sie verstehen", sagte Volkmer in höflichem Tone. Als Stickdorn von KrÜger hinausgefÜhrt wurde, warf er mir einen schadenfrohen, triumphierenden Blick zu. "Ich glaube, es wird Zeit, daß Sie Ihren Jahresurlaub antreten!" meinte Volkmer, nachdem die TÜr hinter den beiden ins Schloß gefallen war. "Schreikrämpfe, das bin ich von Ihnen gar nicht gewöhnt!" "Da soll man nicht aus der Haut fahren", versuchte ich mich zu entschuldigen, "vier Stunden hat dieser Kerl so das Blaue vom Himmel heruntergelogen, daß man sich wirklich nicht Über dieses Wetter zu wundern braucht!" "Durch Schreien kommen Sie der Wahrheit auch nicht näher! Na, nun gehen Sie erst einmal nach Hause und schlafen sich richtig aus. Morgen werden wir weitersehen." "Nein", widersprach ich, "erst gehe ich noch rÜber zu Richter. Ich bin gespannt, ob er etwas gefunden hat." "Warten Sie", sagte Volkmer. "Das interessiert mich auch. Ich komme mit."

Um es vorwegzunehmen: Richter hatte nicht das kleinste Mörtelstäubchen in den Taschen oder am Innenfutter von Stickdorns Mantel finden können. KrÜger und ich, wir beide zogen säuerliche Gesichter. "Ich halte es fÜr sehr wahrscheinlich, daß er den Stein in einer Aktentasche bei sich trug und die Tasche während seiner Flucht irgendwo in die BÜsche geworfen hat", mutmaßte Volkmer. "Auch die unvermeidlichen Handschuhe werden sicherlich dort draußen in den Sträuchern hängen", ergänzte Richter. Das freche, herausfordernde Auftreten Stickdorns hatte mich wieder munter gemacht. Ich schlug vor, sofort die Umgebung des Gartenhauses abzusuchen, an dem wir Stickdorn gestellt hatten. KrÜger kam mit, während Richter, der die kommende Nacht Dienst hatte, sich nach Hause begab. Voller Optimismus fuhren wir los, zurÜck kehrten wir mit hängenden Köpfen. Wir hatten zwei Stunden lang den Schauplatz des nächtlichen Intermezzos abgesucht, waren dem Fluchtweg Stickdorns gefolgt, hatten die Gartenlaube ebenfalls einer eingehenden Musterung unterzogen gefunden hatten wir nichts. Es war Mittag geworden. Weil sich nun bei uns doch die Strapaze der durchwachten Nacht bemerkbar machte, beschlossen KrÜger und ich, uns etwas aufs Ohr zu legen. KrÜger wollte jedoch vorher noch bei Frau Menzel vorsprechen, um sie von der Inhaftierung ihres Untermieters zu informieren. "Bei dieser Gelegenheit werde ich mich
dort gleich mal ein bißchen umsehen!" Ich wÜnschte ihm viel GlÜck, und wir verabschiedeten uns. Meine Stimmung war genauso grau und mies wie der verregnete Tag. Hatten wir etwas verkehrt gemacht? fragte ich mich immer und immer wieder. War Stickdorn vielleicht doch zufällig des Weges gekommen und hatte durch einen Angstreflex die Flucht ergriffen?
Aber das war doch nicht möglich! Wir hatten alles noch einmal genau in Augenschein genommen: den Industriewarenladen, die Litfaßsäule, hinter der Stickdorn hervorgetreten war, die Stelle, an der unser Wagen gehalten hatte. Die Straße war nicht allzu breit. Gewiß, theoretisch war es durchaus denkbar, daß der Täter in einer Tornische auf der anderen Seite der Straße gestanden und von dort geworfen . Doch diese Zweifel saßen nicht tief. Zu Hause ange-
langt, fiel ich sofort in einen festen, bleiernen Schlaf. Als mich das schrille Geklingel des Telefons weckte, war es zwei Uhr morgens. Draußen trommelte noch immer heftiger Regen gegen die Scheiben. Volkmer war es, der anrief. Was er sagte, ließ mich hellwach werden: Der achte Einbruch von "ScherbenAugust"! In einem Textilgeschäft im SÜden der Stadt, das an der F 185 lag! Zunächst glaubte ich an einen dummen Scherz. Aber es war unverkennbar Volkmers Baßstimme, und seine Worte nahmen mir dann auch jeden Zweifel: Richter habe am Tatort einen gleichen Ziegelbrocken vorgefunden, wie ihn "Scherben-August" bisher verwendet hatte. Auch alle anderen Merkmale wiesen auf dessen Methode hin, bis auf die eine: Aus der zertrÜmmerten Auslage sei diesmal nichts gestohlen worden. Da hatten wir die Bescherung! Ratlos und von dieser Nachricht schockiert, zog ich mich an. Sollten wir uns, sollte ich mich vor allem so getäuscht haben? Alles sprach doch eindeutig fÜr Stickdorns Schuld. Er war der einzige Mensch, den wir in der vergangenen Nacht in der Nähe des Tatortes angetroffen hatten! Hatte er bei seiner Dreistigkeit wirklich vor uns Fersengeld gegeben, nur aus Furcht, in einen falschen Verdacht zu geraten? Zumal er angeblich sogar einen Schatten in der HäuserlÜcke hinter dem Industriewarenladen hatte verschwinden sehen! Nonsens, ein "Schatten", der große Unbekannte, der letzte Strohhalm aller hartnäckigen Leugner. Während ich mit meinem Motorrad durch die regnerische Nacht dem Zentrum entgegenbrauste, hatte ich meine Skrupel, daß Stickdorn eventuell doch unschuldig sein
könnte, längst Überwunden. Gestern morgen, als wir Stickdorn vernahmen, hatte ich nach irgendeinem Merkmal gesucht, das ihn von dem Menschen unterschied, der mir vor vier Jahren gegenÜbergesessen hatte. Schon der winzigste Unterschied in Stickdorns Wesen hätte bei mir Bedenken an seiner Täterschaft aufkommen lassen. Aber es gab keinen Unterschied und deshalb glaubte ich fest an seine Schuld, zumal ja auch die Umstände seiner Festnahme Beweis genug dafÜr waren! Was zählte dagegen sein "Teilalibi" bis Mitternacht, die nicht vorhandenen Mörtelstäubchen in seiner Manteltasche . Sicher waren Volkmer, Richter und KrÜger der gleichen Meinung! Nun, ich sollte mich grÜndlich irren! Als ich das Arbeitszimmer unseres Abteilungsleiters betrat, erwog man gerade die Freilassung Erich Stickdorns. Richter berichtete mir von seinen nächtlichen Ermittlungen. Ich besah mir den dunkelroten, rissigen Ziegelbrocken, der haargenau zu unserer nun schon ansehnlichen Steinsammlung paßte. "Was sagst du nun?" fragte der "Professor". Ich sagte gar nichts und zÜndete mir eine Zigarette an. "Nach der neuen Lage können wir auf keinen Fall Stickdorn länger in Haft behalten", konstatierte Volkmer. "Das vernÜnftigste wäre es wohl, ihn auf freien Fuß zu setzen und unauffällig zu Überwachen." "Ich bin nach wie vor von Stickdorns Schuld Überzeugt", meldete sich KrÜger zu Wort. "Gestern habe ich mit Frau Menzel nur ein kurzes Gespräch fÜhren können. Ich nehme zwar an, daß sie von Stickdorns EinbrÜchen wirklich nichts wußte. Trotzdem, ich werde das GefÜhl nicht los,
daß sie uns etwas verschweigt. Deshalb möchte ich mich dort noch einmal umsehen." "Einverstanden, Genosse KrÜger", entschied Volkmer nach kurzem Überlegen; dann wandte er sich an mich: "Genosse Valeska, Sie könnten ja mit Stickdorn noch einmal sprechen. Lassen Sie sich aber diesmal nicht von Ihren Vorurteilen leiten! Verstehen Sie mich?" "Selbstverständlich, Genosse Hauptmann", erwiderte ich. Ich bin kein Freund psychologischer Tricks und liebe es auch nicht, mit Suggestivfragen zu arbeiten. Ich erwähnte es schon: Das verständnisvolle Gespräch von Mensch zu Mensch, das Suchen nach den Wurzeln, nach der Ursache eines Verbrechens oder Vergehens, erscheint mir als das primär Wichtige unserer Arbeit. Als ich Erich Stickdorn in den späten Vormittagsstunden aus der Arrestzelle holen ließ, war ich von vornherein gewillt, diese guten Grundsätze trotz meiner Befangenheit auch bei ihm anzuwenden. Lediglich einen kleinen Täuschungsversuch hatte ich mit Richter abgesprochen, denn ich hielt es fÜr durchaus möglich, daß in der verflossenen Nacht ein Komplize Erich Stickdorns den Einbruch fingiert hatte, um uns von dessen Unschuld zu Überzeugen. Bevor ich jedoch mit der Vernehmung beginnen konnte, bemerkte Stickdorn, daß er erst einmal eine "Lulle" benötige, andernfalls wÜrde er schweigen wie ein Grab. Ich gab ihm eine Zigarette und Feuer. "Eigentlich ist es gar nicht notwendig, daß Sie sprechen, Herr Stickdorn", sagte ich und nahm hinter meinem Schreibtisch Platz. Ich blätterte in der Akte und hob den Kopf. "Wir brauchten lediglich noch Ihre Unterschrift ."
Statt einer Antwort grinste Stickdorn. Ich beschäftigte mich wieder mit dem Bogen. "Den Passus, daß Ihr Komplize . Ja, dafÜr hätten wir noch Platz, das könnten wir noch einfÜgen!" "Ein Komplize!" Stickdorn lachte laut auf, und seine Stimme dröhnte mir mit nahezu ärgerlicher Selbstsicherheit in den Ohren. "Interessant. Da haben Sie sich ja was ganz Originelles ausgedacht! Jetzt habe ich also schon einen Komplizen, was? Etwas anderes fiel Ihnen wohl nicht ein? Damit wollen Sie mich jetzt also auf den Leim fÜhren!" Ich sah zum Fenster, sah in Richters unbeteiligtes Gesicht, das mir doch zu raten schien, die Dinge nicht auf die Spitze zu treiben. "Was wollen Sie eigentlich noch?" trommelte Stickdorn, der meine Unsicherheit mit feinem Instinkt erfaßt hatte, zum Angriff. "Ich habe alles gesagt, was ich weiß! Ich sitze jetzt bei Ihnen Über vierundzwanzig Stunden! Was haben Sie die ganze Zeit eigentlich gemacht? Haben Sie sich bei dem Wirt der ,Försterklause' erkundigt, ob ich bis Mitternacht dort war? Haben Sie mein Zimmer durchsucht, meine Wirtin befragt? Mein Gott, wenn ich wirklich der Mann wäre, den Sie suchen, dann mÜßte ich doch das Zeug irgendwo gelassen haben! Aber nichts, nichts haben Sie finden können, weil es nichts zu finden gibt!" Stickdorns Gesicht hatte sich vor Erregung gerötet, er schleuderte mir die Worte entgegen: "Ich verlange mein Recht! Wenn ich nicht sofort dem Haftrichter vorgefÜhrt werde, dann ." Er stockte, denn KrÜger betrat das Zimmer, murmelte einen Gruß und stellte sich neben Richter. KrÜgers Anwesenheit sollte mich nicht hindern, auf dem
einmal begonnenen Weg fortzufahren. "Sparen Sie sich Ihre Worte auf, bis wir Sie mit Ihrem Komplizen konfrontieren werden!" wies ich ihn scharf zurecht. Diese AnkÜndigung war das Äußerste, was ich wagen durfte. Ich bewegte mich sowieso schon am Rand meiner Vorschriften.
Die erhoffte Wirkung blieb jedoch aus. Meine Worte schienen Stickdorn eher zu belustigen. "Daß Ihnen noch immer nichts Besseres einfällt, Herr Oberleutnant! Einen Komplizen, ich? Das ist ja lachhaft!" "Vielleicht eine Komplizin, Herr Stickdorn?" fragte es auf einmal trocken vom Fenster her. Stickdorn, der sich eben auf seinem Stuhl bequem und selbstbewußt gegen die Lehne rekeln wollte, hielt jäh inne. Er blieb aufrecht sitzen, sein kantig gewordenes Gesicht ruckte herum, er stierte auf KrÜger mit plötzlich unsicher lauernden Augen. "Was soll das nun wieder?"
Es war nicht schwer, die Veränderung zu spÜren, die in ihm vorgegangen war. Hatte KrÜger mit einer Vermutung ins Schwarze getroffen, oder hatte er einen Beweis fÜr seine wie eine Feststellung klingende Frage? KrÜger trat vom Fenster weg in die Mitte des Zimmers. Einen Meter vor Stickdorn blieb er stehen. Mit seinem rotwangigen, sommersprossigen Kindergesicht blickte er auf ihn hinab, dann begann er leise, mit vorwurfsvollem Ton: "FÜr Sie wäre es wohl am besten, die Maske des beleidigten, unschuldig Verdächtigten abzustreifen, Herr Stickdorn. Sie steht Ihnen nicht mehr. Ich war heute morgen in dem kleinen Sommerhäuschen am MÜhlauer See ." Schon bei diesen Worten bemerkte ich, wie Stickdorns Widerstand erlosch, wie sein massiger Körper in sich zusammensackte. Das bleiche, teigige Gesicht wirkte auf einmal grau und verfallen, die Augen, eben noch flammend vor anklagendem Vorwurf, blickten mÜde ins Leere. "Ehrlich gesagt, Herr Stickdorn", fuhr KrÜger fort, "auch ich wÜnsche mir schon seit langem so ein Häuschen mit allem Komfort an einem klaren, von Wald umgebenen See. Doch um einen solchen Wunsch Wahrheit werden zu lassen, muß man arbeiten. Sie hatten in den letzten Jahren doch wahrlich genÜgend Zeit, Über Ihr bisheriges verfehltes Leben nachzudenken! Sind Sie dabei noch immer nicht zu der Erkenntnis gelangt, daß es auf die Dauer nicht lohnt, sich durch Diebstahl zu bereichern, selbst wenn man eine todsichere Masche gefunden zu haben glaubt? Frau Menzel, mit der ich heute morgen ." "Johanna hat mit diesen Dingen nichts zu tun!" KrÜger lächelte ungerÜhrt und spöttisch. "Übrigens, es
war verhältnismäßig leicht, das mit Ihrem gemeinsamen Sommerhäuschen am MÜhlauer See in Erfahrung zu bringen. Daß Sie eine Parzelle, ein LaubengrundstÜck oder etwas Ähnliches besitzen, wußte ich bereits gestern. Wenn man zur warmen Jahreszeit jedes Wochenende außerhalb seiner Wohnung verbringt, läßt sich das vor den Nachbarn nicht verheimlichen. Heute morgen aber, als ich Frau Menzel in den Kleinbahnzug nach MÜhlau steigen sah, begann ich zu ahnen, wo die von Ihnen gestohlenen Sachen geblieben waren! Ja, und meine Ahnung trog nicht, das gesamte Diebesgut fand sich an, vom Fernseher bis zum umfrisierten Außenborder ." "Johanna hat mit all dem nichts zu tun!" versteifte sich Stickdorn. "Sie hat fest daran geglaubt, daß ich das Zeug billig erworben hätte!" "Das ist unglaubwÜrdig", bemerkte KrÜger mit zusammengezogenen Brauen. "Sie wollen Johanna schÜtzen, Ihre einzige große Liebe heraushalten, genau, wie Sie vor vier Jahren meinen Kollegen" - KrÜger warf mir einen vieldeutigen Blick zu - "an der Nase herumgefÜhrt, ihm das Märchen vom unbekannten Flittchen vorgegaukelt haben, mit dem Sie das erbeutete Geld verpraßt hätten. Und dabei war es doch Johanna DÜrkens, damals hieß sie noch DÜrkens, die sich von Ihrem gestohlenen Geld eine Wohnung einrichtete ." "Hören Sie auf! Das ist nicht wahr!" " . die in der gleichen Zeit, in der Sie in einem Haftarbeitslager Ihre Strafe verbÜßten, sich einen neuen Liebsten zulegte, ihn sogar heiratete. Und trotzdem haben Sie dichtgehalten, und als Sie aus der Haft entlassen wurden, zogen Sie sofort zu ihr. Anständig und großzÜgig von
Ihnen, ihr die Episode mit dem bereits wieder geschiedenen Mann nicht unter die Nase zu reiben, um ihrer schönen Augen und extravaganten WÜnsche wegen erneut Risiken einzugehen!
