I: DECEMBER
DEVYN Eden sighed in relief as the band finally played; watching with a contented smile as the newlywed Mr. and Mrs. Martin took to the dance floor. As the couple’s song, Can You Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John, played, Devyn began to relax. “Another disaster masterfully averted by the charismatic wedding planner, Devyn Eden,” Tabitha Webster, his best friend and associate, playfully whispered into his ear as she hooked her arm in his. “This one was too close,” he smiled, running a free hand through his long, wispy hair. One of the band members had called him that morning, telling Devyn he had injured his hand that very morning and could not play his guitar. It looked as if disaster was about to strike, but Devyn had called on his musician friend, Karl Hill, and was able to arrange an immediate replacement. Karl stepping in at the last minute not only saved the wedding band from having to cancel, but helped maintain Devyn’s reputation as a skilled wedding coordinator. The twenty-eight year old had faced similar adversities throughout his career but had always managed to stay one step ahead of the game, earning him popularity for planning

the weddings of some of the most elite clientele in Los Angeles. When the music changed, Devyn offered Tabitha a charming smile and escorted her to the dance floor. She grinned mischievously at him as they swayed to the music because she knew that Devyn’s true passion was in dancing. He and she were expert dancers, having given lessons to many a bride and groom who were not trained in the art. “Mr. Eden, is it your intention to show off?” Tabitha teased, gracefully twirling around her partner. “Maybe just a little.” Devyn’s hazel eyes sparkled as he pulled her close, moving in perfect rhythm with her. Tabitha looked up at him and laughed as he elegantly dipped her, then in one fluid motion lifted her to her feet as if she were floating on air. The way they moved on the dance floor often misled people into thinking they were a couple; however, Devyn’s tastes ran toward members of the same sex. He’d had his share of heartbreak, but he did not regret it; he gladly accepted the good and bad that resulted from each relationship. To Devyn, life was about experiencing things, taking risks, especially with love. How could he expect to find his Prince Charming if he hid his heart away? No, he had to be open and willing to take that chance; otherwise he could spend the rest of his life regretting it, and that was something Devyn could not bear. Although Devyn was teased for being a hopeless romantic, he did not mind. To him, love and romance went hand and hand.

AIDAN Byrne watched the various couples dance to the upbeat tempo. He had never learned the art and admired those who swayed to the rhythm on such nimble feet. He took a drink of champagne before continuing his observation and found his attention drawn to the wedding planner as he glided across the ballroom with his partner. The young woman was slim and petite, her blonde hair done up in a fashionable twist adorned with tiny red roses, matching the crimson cocktail length dress she wore. She kept smiling up at the young man who was dancing with her, and who could blame her? While the woman was stunning in her own right, her dance partner, Devyn, was incredibly beautiful. Aidan found himself attracted to the man who had organized his friend’s wedding ever since he first saw the coordinator at the church, though he doubted the raven beauty would even remember him. Aidan had missed out on the rehearsal dinner because he had to attend a very important meeting with some clients who flew in from New York, and the morning of the wedding, he had been running a little late. When he arrived at the church, Aidan had introduced himself as one of the ushers, and Devyn greeted him with a striking smile. They only managed to exchange a few quick words before Devyn was called away. Aidan watched as

Devyn kept busy, making sure that everything ran smoothly. Equipped with a Bluetooth headset nestled neatly behind his ear and a top of the line PDA, Devyn would flip his cell phone out at a moment’s notice to quickly solve whatever problem arose. Aidan had been impressed by Devyn’s obvious air of confidence, while everyone ran about him in various stages of panic. His eyes following the dancers, Aidan bit his lower lip, lost in thought. His last relationship ended badly, and it left him brokenhearted. Aidan yearned for a steady, healthy partnership that could lead to something more serious. He wanted to take a chance on someone and find his happily ever after. However, the men he found attractive did not seem interested in monogamy. Aidan had learned a hard lesson from his last partner, Tory. The high spirited twenty-three year old ended up cheating on Aidan repeatedly, the final straw coming when Aidan caught him with a mutual friend of theirs. Aidan had broken off the relationship at once. Still, attending events like this wedding reminded him of how lonely he truly felt. Even his younger sister, Chyna, had recently gotten engaged! Aidan glanced at Devyn again and for the umpteenth time contemplated using his sister’s upcoming nuptials as an excuse to speak to him, but Aidan’s shyness left him paralyzed. Devyn had approached Aidan a few times that evening, but Aidan always froze up, the words catching in

his throat. Each time, Aidan responded with a short answer before making a hasty retreat. Thinking back on it, Aidan felt like a complete fool. He had no trouble picking up men before, so why was Devyn such an issue? Aidan figured maybe the whole incident with Tory had left him a bit gun shy. Devyn must think him to be some kind of an asshole. If only the wedding coordinator knew how Aidan really felt. He wished he had the courage to speak to Devyn and ask him out on a date, to see where it could lead. Who knows, maybe they would hit it off and fall in love. That prospect appealed greatly to Aidan. He could picture himself writing lyrics inspired by his newfound muse, Devyn. Stop being such a foolish romantic! Aidan reprimanded himself. It just gets you into trouble. Aidan sighed and took another drink of his champagne, resting his chin on his hand. Oh well, the songwriter mused, maybe I can at least conjure up some angst-filled lyrics from this experience. “Why so glum, and at a wedding, no less?” Aidan heard his best friend, Simon Korvin, speak. “Just thinking about lyrics to a new song.” “Work, work, work. Is that all you ever think about?” Simon affectionately ruffed up Aidan’s auburn hair as he sat next to him. The unruly hair protested the contact, and a few

strands escaped from the neatly combed ponytail, trickling gently onto Aidan’s face. “It gives me purpose.” “Bah, forget that stuff for tonight. We’re here to have fun!” “Why are you so happy? You just got divorced. You should be sad and despondent.” Aidan winked at his friend. He had never really cared for Tiffany, Simon’s ex-wife, but at the time, Simon looked happy so who was Aidan to argue about where Cupid’s arrow landed? “Are you serious? And end up like one of your songs?” Simon feigned horror. “Aidan, you need to find something to write about that isn’t so melodramatic. The last song I heard of yours made me want to hang myself.” He pulled on his tie to emphasize the point, pretending to choke himself. Aidan burst out laughing at Simon’s response. He could not recall the last time Simon had looked so cheerful. Aidan had expected Simon might be experiencing some sort of melancholy after his wife of eight years decided to leave him. The divorce had been a bitter one, especially on Tiffany’s end, mainly because she held onto a deep resentment toward Simon. When Simon had appeared at his doorstep late one night with a pitiful expression on his face, a suitcase in one hand and a cat carrier in the other, Aidan had immediately offered his friend a place to stay. They had stayed up half the night drinking coffee while Simon confessed to Aidan that he

had cheated on Tiffany, and when she found out, she had gone ballistic. “Do you regret having the affair? Maybe you can still—” “No, there is no chance of reconciliation,” Simon answered with a melancholy look. “I don’t think I’ve ever really loved her, and I’m certain she doesn’t love me. All we do is fight. I shouldn’t have married her. I realized too late what a terrible mistake I made. I didn’t want to be alone, so I ended up getting married because that’s what you’re supposed to do… it’s what my parents expected from me.” Simon’s current opinion of Tiffany made it seem that conversation never took place. Aidan could only guess that Tiffany’s callousness had managed to push Simon’s remorse away. An almost impossible feat for someone like Simon; the man had a big heart. Simon, a pro football player, made time to volunteer at an animal shelter and soup kitchen once a week to help the two different kinds of homeless. He gave money to help clean the environment, hosted charity events, and donated to the children’s hospital. The man needed to be canonized and made a saint, in Aidan’s eyes. Simon spoke, interrupting Aidan’s thoughts. “I have lots to celebrate. The signed papers have been logged in the courthouse, making my divorce official. I’m a free man.” He picked up Aidan’s flute of champagne, his green eyes sparkling with amusement. “Which is why I am smiling,” he said as he took a generous sip from the goblet. “You’re terrible,” Aidan replied, chuckling.

“That’s what the ex thought too.” Simon’s smile turned roguish. “Seriously, you should go and ask someone to dance. Or are you still moping after your ex? I forget the name. What was it again?” Aidan averted his eyes. “Tory,” he answered quietly. While Tory could very well be a woman’s name, the fact in this instance was that it belonged to a man. Aidan had never told Simon the truth behind Tory’s identity. In their sixteen years of friendship, Aidan had never had the courage to tell his high school buddy that he was attracted to men. Simon didn’t like passing judgment on people, but still Aidan felt an innate fear of losing his friend if the truth came out. Aidan was relieved that when Simon came to live with him, his involvement with Tory had already ended. “Well, let’s not spoil the evening talking about that slut who broke your heart.” Simon pulled Aidan to his feet. “Come on, let’s go ask someone to dance.” Aidan shook his head. “No, you go ahead without me. You know I can’t dance.” “No one here is going to care! I’ve told you there’s no such thing as dance police, you’re safe.” Simon tugged at Aidan’s arm. “I’m not too sure about that. Those two over there make me feel self-conscious.” “Who?”

“Devyn and that blonde girl, I don’t remember her name….” Aidan murmured the last part. “Devyn, huh?” A playful smile curved Simon’s lips. “You remember Devyn’s name but not the blonde’s?” Simon teased Aidan, poking him lightly in the ribs. He hoped Aidan would have caught on to the clues Simon threw at him, for example his purposefully not using any gender specific pronouns when they discussed finding dance partners; or the fact that Simon did not use the word “she” when he mentioned Tory. Simon had found out about Aidan’s alternative lifestyle completely by accident. When Aidan had broken up with Tory, he had fallen into a quiet depression, immersing himself in work. Simon tried everything to try and cheer the man up, but nothing seemed to work. So Simon took it upon himself to pay Tory a visit. He managed to sneak a peek at Aidan’s address book on his PDA one day and memorized the address. To Simon’s surprise, Tory turned out to be a guy! Shock had prevented him from reacting to the situation at first, but that initial shock wore off quickly, and Simon entered the conversation defensively. The twink threw attitude at him, and when he took to insulting Aidan, the gloves came off. Simon chewed the little bastard out, and by the time he’d finished, Tory was in tears. Aidan’s cheeks turned slightly red. “I… I remember his name because Devyn is the wedding coordinator.”

Seeing how uncomfortable Aidan was, Simon decided to change the subject. “I don’t want you to spend the entire evening brooding, thinking up song lyrics for the suicidal.” Aidan chuckled at Simon’s remark. “You know what a bore I am. I wouldn’t know how to strike up a good conversation without it sounding like a cheesy pick up line. Getting girls was always your specialty, not mine.” Simon put his arm around his friend. “For a songwriter who sits around all day composing ‘love’ songs, you certainly are shy,” he teased. “You should use some of that creativity to impress someone special.” “Well, it’s not difficult to carry on a love affair with a pen.” Simon leaned in closer, the flute accidently spilling a bit of its contents over Aidan’s rented tuxedo. “That attitude is not going to get you laid.” “I don’t need to get laid,” Aidan responded, using a napkin to wipe off his tuxedo. “My friend, if everyone got a little nookie every once in a while, the world would be a much better place,” Simon replied matter-of-factly. “Isn’t that what got you into trouble in the first place?” Aidan teased back. “See how that works? Because of it, I’m now in a happier place.” Simon’s grin turned mischievous.

“You’re incorrigible. I will have you know that I happen to be very satisfied with my current sex life.” It was a lie, of course, and he was sure Simon would see through it. Aidan’s last partner had been Tory, and that sordid affair ended months ago. He didn’t miss his ex-lover; the breakup had inspired him to write some of his best lyrics. However, he didn’t want to reveal the most intimate details of his life to Simon in the middle of a crowded wedding reception. Simon snorted. “Bullshit.” He took the napkin from Aidan and carefully dabbed the area stained with pink champagne. Aidan shot him a bewildered look. “What makes you think I’m not having sex?” “I live with you, remember? Besides, you would be smiling if you were getting some sweet loving, but instead you’re up here brooding.” Simon winked. “Stop saying that word.” “Which one?” Simon asked innocently. “You know which one, the ‘brooding’ one. I’m not ‘brooding’.” “Okay, I’ll use moping, is that better?” Aidan sighed at his friend’s inane logic and excused himself from the table. “The stain’s not coming out. I’m going

to the bathroom to see if I can clean this off, otherwise I’ll lose my deposit, and I can’t afford that right now.” “You should let me pay you rent for staying over at your place.” “No,” Aidan answered firmly. “Then let me help you with something, anything.” “I’m fine,” Aidan replied. No, you’re not, Simon thought to himself. Aidan was having a bit of financial trouble since his last contract gave him the run-around, and now the company was two months overdue on paying Aidan. Simon had offered to loan him money, but Aidan refused. Simon had taken it upon himself to help out his friend. He put a call out to his lawyer, hoping to “motivate” the people who owed Aidan money into making payments. Simon watched as Aidan disappeared into the crowd before turning his attention to Devyn. Smiling, Simon picked up a white rose off the table and made his way toward the dancer who had captivated Aiden’s interest, a determined look in his emerald eyes. Simon wanted Aidan to leave this wedding reception with at least one phone number and if he had to play matchmaker to do it, so be it.

THE music had finished, and Devyn led Tabitha back to the table. “Holy shit! That’s Simon Korvin over there!” she gestured with a nod of her head. Devyn turned to where she was indicating. At the far end of the ballroom stood a tall blond man with short cropped hair, his body a mass of rippling muscles deftly hidden behind the expensive tailor made suit he wore. “He’s cute, but not my type, unfortunately; I find all those muscles a bit much.” Devyn made a face. “He’d crush me beneath that behemoth of a body, and that wouldn’t be fun at all. I liked the looks of that one usher, but I can’t seem to remember his name. So many new ones were thrown at me this morning, it was near impossible to keep track of them all. I tried to approach him a few times, but whenever I go near him he just scampers off like a frightened mouse. I hope it’s not my breath?” Devyn checked it. “Nope, it’s minty fresh.” “Maybe that cat-like grin of yours intimidates him.” “Nonsense, my smile is friendly and welcoming. I’ve worked on it, see?” Devyn shot her a killer smile and then glanced over at Simon again. “Anyway, thanks for the recommendation, but Mr. Crushing Muscles is not for me.” Tabitha giggled, “Do you even know who Simon Korvin is? He’s the quarterback for the Los Angeles Redwoods. He’s not gay, I’ve done my homework. I’ve read that he just got divorced from his wife, that he enjoys surfing and working

out. He loves Chinese food, and his favorite color is red.” She grinned, looking at her crimson dress. “Tabby, are you stalking this guy?” Devyn joked, intrigued by Tabitha’s quick rundown. “No, silly, why do you think I watch football? Not only are the Los Angeles Redwoods having an incredible first season, but Simon Korvin makes it all worthwhile.” “And here I thought you were just into watching a bunch of sweaty men pile on top of one another. You’re such a perv, Tabby.” She playfully slapped Devyn’s shoulder. “Would you stop that?” She paused, grabbing Devyn’s arm. “Oh God! He’s headed this way! How do I look?” Devyn raised an eyebrow, amused by Tabitha’s reaction. She usually did not resort to such measures when meeting a celebrity. She ironed out the imaginary wrinkles in her dress and put on her best smile as he strode up to them. “Hello,” Simon flashed a smile worthy of Casanova. “I’m Simon Korvin.” Devyn half expected the words “Bond, James Bond” to escape out of Simon’s mouth. “Tabitha Webster,” she answered first, extending her hand in greeting. “Beautiful name for a lovely lady,” Simon winked, kissing the back of her hand.

Devyn smirked. Simon certainly was a character. “I’m Devyn Eden, the wedding coordinator.” He shook hands with the football player. “I know; I came over to speak to you about a business arrangement. You see, my friend Aidan’s sister is getting married soon, and the poor dear is quite frantic trying to organize everything herself.” Simon knew that Chyna had only gotten engaged a few days ago, but Devyn didn’t know that, so he hoped to play up just how desperately Devyn’s help was needed. “I would love to coordinate her wedding.” Devyn took out his PDA and began pushing buttons. “When is the lady getting married?” Devyn asked, hoping to get a better assessment of how soon he needed to get started. “Six months from now,” “Six months!” Devyn’s eyes widened. “That doesn’t give us much time to plan.” “Exactly, which is the reason why I want to hire you right away.” Devyn made some notes on his PDA. “What’s the bride’s name? Do you know the exact date for the wedding?” “Bride’s name is Chyna Byrne, both names are spelled with a Y. She and her fiancé, Kristopher Mercer, that’s Kris with a K… set the date for June twentieth.” “Byrne? Why is that name familiar?” Devyn looked over at Tabitha.
16

“Not sure,” she answered ruefully. “I know I’ve heard it before, I just can’t seem to place it. I’m sure it will come to me.” He focused his attention on the PDA and smiled. “It looks like I’m free for June twentieth. Let’s meet this Monday at my office, say eleven a.m.? I’ll need a contact number.” “Eleven is perfect. I’m staying with my friend, so I’ll have to give you his number.” Simon could not help grinning as he gave Aidan’s number; his plan was working out better than expected. “I’d like to meet with the bride and groom as well,” Devyn mentioned while handing Simon his business card. “I’ll be sure to bring them. Oh, there is one more thing. I noticed how well you and your girlfriend danced. My friend Aidan has two left feet and simply refuses to dance in public. I want him to be able to dance at his sister’s wedding. Is there any way he could get some lessons?” “Both Devyn and I give lessons. We have a studio in back of Mrs. Eden’s bridal shop,” Tabitha interjected. “And just so you know, Devyn isn’t my boyfriend, we’re just good friends.” “Oh, I’m sorry…. The way you two moved on the dance floor, I naturally just assumed….” Simon pretended to be surprised. “People think that all the time,” Tabitha waved her hand, as if dismissing the idea.

“Very well, I’ll bring Aidan in on Monday as well to discuss those dance lessons. Which reminds me,” Simon offered the white rose to Tabitha, “is there any way I could convince you to give me a complimentary lesson right now?” “I’d love to,” she flirted back. Simon passed Aidan on his way to the dance floor and winked at him. When Aidan noticed the blonde on his arm, his face paled. It was Devyn’s dance partner! What the hell was Simon up to? Aidan turned to walk away and didn’t notice Devyn heading his way, slamming into the wedding planner and almost knocking him off his feet. “I’m so sorry,” Aidan stammered. “It’s okay, it’s my fault. I didn’t watch where I was going.” Devyn presented Aidan with a friendly smile. Aidan, unsure of what to say next, averted his eyes, pretending to be preoccupied in getting the champagne stain out. “I could help you with that, if you’d like,” Devyn offered. “Umm, okay,” Aidan answered shyly, following after Devyn who led him to the bar and ordered a small club soda. “This will help get rid of the stain,” Devyn explained as he took a clean napkin from behind the bar and dipped the corner of it into the drink. Devyn gathered the jacket into his free hand and gently patted the spotted area. “You’re a member of the wedding party, but I don’t recall seeing you at the rehearsal dinner.”

“I had to cancel attending because I had to meet with some clients who came in from New York.” “Oh? What do you do for a living?” Devyn asked, blowing a few wispy strands of hair out of his eyes. “Nothing special. I’m just a songwriter,” Aidan shrugged matter-of-factly. “So who do you sell your songs to? Bands? Producers? Studios?” Devyn asked, hoping that the familiar topic would help break Aidan of his shyness. “Any and all of them; mostly studios buy them for upcoming singers.” Talking about the familiar topic gave Aidan a little confidence. “And you? How long have you been planning weddings?” Devyn looked up at him, a soft smile on his lips. He hadn’t mentioned his occupation; that meant the usher remembered who he was! If only Devyn could get the man to reveal his name. He didn’t dare ask, for that could be taken as not having interest in him, and Devyn was quite interested. “About seven years. I work from my mother’s bridal shop, Eden’s Paradise.” Aidan licked his lips; he was a little nervous asking his next question. “Your girlfriend, the blonde, she must like it that you work in a bridal shop, huh? That way when you plan your own wedding, you’re one step ahead of the game.” Devyn grinned at the usher’s attempt to find out if Devyn was attached. “Tabitha is my friend and associate. We

own a small dance studio in the back of the bridal shop where we give dance lessons.” “You know, my sister, Chyna… she just got engaged, maybe you could—” Before Aidan could finish, Devyn’s cell phone rang. He excused himself and walked a few steps away, frowning, before putting the call on hold. “I’m sorry, I have to go take care of an emergency and I’m not sure when I will be freed up again.” He handed Aidan his card, jotting some numbers on the back. “That’s my personal cell number—call me tomorrow, Aidan. I look forward to continuing our conversation.” He winked, rather pleased with himself that he’d figured out who his mystery man was: Simon Korvin’s friend Aidan Byrne. I knew the name Byrne sounded familiar! Unless there happened to be another Aidan with a sister named Chyna who’d just gotten engaged, and Devyn doubted there could be such a coincidence. Content that he would be meeting with Aidan on Monday, Devyn marched off toward the lobby of the hotel where the general manager was waiting for him. Devyn was unsure of what the future would have in store for him and Aidan, but he couldn’t wait to find out.

followed after Aidan who stormed into his bedroom. “I thought Chyna would like the gift. When I talked to her about it, she seemed happy.” He shrugged nonchalantly, his white and orange tabby, Wilson, trailing behind them, intrigued by the commotion. “That’s not why you went to talk to Devyn, admit it,” Aidan replied, exasperated, flopping on his back onto the bed. He took one of his pillows and placed it over his head, hoping that would drown out Simon. “Well, I did ask Devyn about possible dance lessons for you.” Aidan’s head shot up. “You didn’t.” “Where’s the harm in that? You’re always saying you don’t know how to dance, and I thought, maybe you would want to have at least one dance with your sister at her wedding. My god, what was I thinking? How terrible of me,” Simon countered with sarcasm. “Why are you doing this to me?” Aidan protested.
21

“Doing what? What possible reason would I have for wanting to talk to a wedding coordinator other than about Chyna?” Simon raised an eyebrow, half expecting Aidan to confess. Aidan pressed his lips together and sat up straight. “You’re right. I shouldn’t be angry, I’m sorry,” he mumbled, reaching down for the cat and pulling it onto the bed. It curled up on his lap, purring loudly as Aidan stroked its fur. Simon rolled his eyes and sighed. When was Aidan going to trust him and just tell him the truth? What did Simon have to do to prove his loyalty and friendship? He decided it was time to lay the cards on the table. “Look, I’m tired of pretending I don’t know anymore, so I’m going to be honest and come out with it.” Aidan raised an eyebrow. “What are you talking about?” he asked, suspicious of Simon’s behavior. “You like Devyn, right?” Simon answered amiably. “I mean, that’s cool with me. So you like guys, big deal.” Simon shrugged again, reaching over to pet his cat that lay across Aidan’s lap. “I just want you to know that it doesn’t bother me. Your being gay doesn’t change the fact that you’re still my best friend.” He sat next to Aidan on the bed. “I’ve talked with Chyna about it because I figured you’d at least tell her. She told me that you’re secretive about it because your parents don’t know. No worries, I have no intention of mentioning it to them. Your secret is safe with me. Though Chyna and I think they would be okay with it if they knew. Your parents are pretty liberal, you really should tell them.

And you needn’t fear any of us abandoning you, we’re behind you one hundred percent. So if you like this Devyn, he seems a decent guy, go ahead and take a chance. None of us are judging you, least of all, me.” Aidan’s jaw dropped in shock. He could not believe what he was hearing. Simon knew? “When? How?” was all Aidan could manage to stutter. “Since your break up with Tory. I paid the little bastard a visit.” Simon proceeded to tell Aidan all about his encounter. By the end of the tale, Simon had Aidan laughing. “I would have paid real money to have seen Tory’s face,” Aidan chuckled. “Yeah, it was priceless. I called him a worthless twink, don’t think he appreciated that.” “Where did you learn the word ‘twink’?” “The Internet is a powerful tool, my friend. I wanted to be prepared so when you told me your secret, I could understand the lingo.” Aidan fell back on the bed and laughed heartily. “Sometimes you’re just too much.” “It’s all part of my irresistible charm.” “Yeah, that must be it,” Aidan teased back.

“Well, as enthralling as the topic of moi is, we should be getting back to Devyn. Which reminds me, I saw the two of you standing over by the bar yesterday. So what happened? I’ve been dying to know.” “Nothing romantic, Casanova, he helped me take the champagne stain out of the tuxedo.” “So he didn’t give you his number?” Aidan blushed slightly. “Umm, yeah he did… he asked me to call him today. I had considered it, but now that I know you hired him for Chyna’s wedding, I don’t think I should. I mean, he’d probably think that tacky of me.” “Don’t be ridiculous! Call the boy!” Simon handed Aidan the cordless phone. “Invite him to coffee or something. Oh, and don’t forget to ask him about the dance lessons,” Simon teased, wiggling his eyebrows and moving his hips in a circular motion. “Simon!” “What? Like you haven’t thought about that? What did I tell you the other day about the world being a better place if only people got more nookie?” Aidan picked up a pillow and threw it at his best friend, torn between horror and amusement.

TAKING a deep breath, Aidan dialed the cell number that was scribbled on the back of Devyn’s business card. Devyn answered the phone by the third ring, his voice warm and friendly. They spent hours on the phone laughing and talking about various topics. With the exception of Aidan’s love of football, they were delighted to find they had so much in common. Both men enjoyed surfing, reading, cooking, art, and of course, music. Aidan discovered that Devyn was an only child, that both of his parents supported his life style, although his father had recently passed away, and that Tabby—as he called her—and he had been friends since second grade when she transferred in from Phoenix, Arizona. They wrapped up the conversation about two a.m. feeling quite content. “I’m glad you called, Aidan. I really enjoyed talking with you.” “Me too.” Aidan smiled. “I’ll see you tomorrow. I have to sign up for those dance lessons.” “I’ll make sure to have my dance card free.” “By the way, would it be improper of me to ask my dance instructor out for some coffee once he gets off work tomorrow? There’s this great café in Venice Beach that you have got to try.” Devyn grinned, “I think that can be arranged. I can pick you up, if you like? Around seven then?”

“Great.” Aidan gave Devyn his home address and directions and promised he would be ready by the appointed time. They hung up each dreaming of the other with hopes in their hearts of a potential romance.
THE next morning, Devyn spent the early hours of his day setting up for his meeting with Simon Korvin. Devyn had an impressive spread set out for his guests: a silver coffee pot with matching silverware, fine china cups, an assortment of teas and coffee, and a vast array of breakfast breads. Devyn added the finishing touch, a crystal vase filled with white roses. He cocked his head, dissatisfied with how they looked, and moved the vase to another position, rearranging the flowers. “The flowers look fine,” Tabitha commented. “Umm, they need something….” Devyn kept staring at them. “Never mind that, how did your conversation with Aidan go last night? I gather you were on the phone late because you didn’t call me back. Details! I want details!” Devyn’s lips curved into a cunning smile. “We’re going on a date after I get off work.” “Oh my God!! Why didn’t you tell me? Where is he taking you? Somewhere romantic?” Tabitha asked in a flurry of giggles as she threw her arms around Devyn.

You may not think it romantic at first, but it’s by the ocean so I’m thinking if it’s not too cold, we can stroll along the boardwalk, visit the shops, talk… then I plan on stealing a kiss or two from him,” he smiled devilishly. “Just a kiss?” Tabitha teased. “A kiss will do… for now.” There was a twinkle in Devyn’s eye when he said it. The front door chimed, announcing that visitors had arrived. Devyn went to the front of the store to greet Simon Korvin and his guests and escorted them to the small office located in the west wing of the bridal shop. Devyn observed the happy couple, already formulating ideas as to what details would best complement their personalities. Kristopher Mercer, the groom, was a taller than average twenty-four year old, towering over most of the men, including Simon. Kris had wild brown hair that fell in loose locks around his collar. His hazel eyes seemed to smile, especially whenever he looked over at his fiancé, Chyna. The bride to be was slim, Devyn guessed a size three; her thick blonde hair was neatly pinned back with a barrette, and she wore a modest amount of makeup, just enough to give her a little bit of color. Her eyes were the same color gray as Aidan’s, and they shared a similar smile. Devyn winked at Aidan as they took their seats in Devyn’s office. The older man blushed slightly, and Devyn smiled at him before turning his attention to Chyna and Kris. “Do you know where you would like your ceremony to

take place? Do you have a particular theme you would like?” Devyn asked, taking out his portfolio and getting down to business. “We discussed it last night and agreed on a beach wedding, with the reception at a nearby hotel,” Chyna answered excitedly. “That’s not a problem. I would suggest Malibu because they have more space available than our beaches here in Los Angeles. I would first like to make you aware of all the fees involved in hosting an event on the beach, and second, I would like to sketch out a contingency plan with the two of you, in case the weather decides to spoil your special day.” Devyn pulled out a couple of brochures and started explaining the various options they could have with an outdoor wedding. They spent a few hours discussing which beach site in Malibu best fit their needs and what hotels to look at, narrowing it down to three. Devyn gave them samples of photographers and videographers to help them chose which one they would want, went through an array of flower arrangements, showed brochures of the different tuxedo rentals, and what bridal shops Chyna might want to consider. If she chose Eden’s Paradise for her dress, she would receive a discount; however, Devyn did not pressure the bride in regards where she should purchase her gown. Devyn stressed that it was Chyna’s special day, and that he was there to help them organize the wedding of their dreams, not his.

Chyna and Kris seemed very satisfied with Devyn’s professionalism and loved how he catered to their needs. They ended the meeting with Chyna making the next appointment later in the week, so that Devyn could go accompany her and her bridesmaids on visiting the selected bridal shops. Aidan signed up for dance classes that would take place twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday. When Chyna found out that her brother was taking dance classes just so he could dance with her at the wedding, she squeezed him tightly. She knew her brother had issues with dancing, so his effort to take lessons meant a lot to her. When they left the bridal shop Chyna grabbed hold of Aidan’s arm, wearing a Cheshire cat grin. “Don’t think I didn’t notice the flirtation between you and Devyn. Care to fill your sister in on what’s going on?” Aidan blushed slightly. “I met him at the wedding I attended last Saturday. We talked a bit, Devyn gave me his number, and we talked last night. Not really much to tell.” “They talked till two a.m.,” Simon chimed in. “And they have a date tonight.” “You have a date? Aidan, that’s awesome! Devyn seems a much nicer guy than that dweeb Tory.” “It’s just a date, people. It’s not like I’m walking down the aisle.” Aidan laughed at his sister’s enthusiasm.
29

“Okay, okay, so it’s ‘just a date’ but that’s how Kris and I started. And now look at us, we’re getting married.” “I can’t legally marry Devyn, at least not in the United States.” Aidan slapped his forehead. “See, now you’ve got me doing it.” “You could have a commitment ceremony. I was reading about those on the web,” Simon added. “Or a hand-fasting,” Kris jumped into the conversation. “No, no, no. He’ll have to have a proper wedding in Canada,” Chyna remarked, winking at her older brother. Rolling his eyes at the merciless teasing, Aidan shook his head and smiled. “Can I just go on my date first and see how that works out before I start thinking nuptials, handfasting, or commitment ceremonies?” Chyna giggled, “It’s your own fault, mister. You’re always telling me how you want a serious relationship and that you want to be ‘married’, even if it’s not society’s traditional way.” “Okay, I’ll admit that’s true. But first, I need to date the man. I can’t just jump from one date to ‘will you be mine forever’… that’s just creepy. Like bad vampire romance creepy.” Chyna playfully slapped Aidan on his shoulder. “No making fun of my books. I happen to think it’s quite romantic that this ancient being is so enamored with one

woman that he spends the ages searching for his one true love.” She gave a happy sigh. “It must be a chick thing,” Simon commented. “No man would do that.” “She calls it romantic, I call it stalking,” Aidan teased her. Chyna rolled her eyes. “Men,” she muttered, stepping ahead of the trio. Kris looked at Aidan in surprise. “How is it that I didn’t say anything and yet I’m in trouble now?” Simon chuckled. “Welcome to married life.”
DEVYN arrived at Aidan’s home in Anaheim at seven sharp. He checked himself in the rear view mirror, fixing a few errant dark locks. Satisfied that he looked his best, he stepped out of the car and headed toward the house. He admired the curbside appeal of the large home. The landscape had a multitude of brightly colored flowers and green foliage in the yard curving along the path leading up to the front door. Devyn rented a modest apartment above the bridal shop from his mother. He could have bought a house, but then he could not have afforded the car, and he needed the car more.

From the looks of things, Aidan was not hurting for money. There were two cars parked in the driveway. Devyn assumed that the green hybrid Jeep was probably Simon’s so that meant the black BMW convertible was Aidan’s. Devyn wondered if Aidan’s career as a songwriter helped him purchase these material things or did he come from money? Anaheim was not necessarily Newport Beach or Marina del Rey as far as ritzy neighborhoods go, but Aidan’s home was impressive nonetheless. Devyn took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell, taking note of the big front porch with its set of white wicker chairs and matching table. There were a few scattered books on top, suggesting that Aidan and Simon frequented the area. Simon answered the door, waving him in. “Hey there, Devyn, come on in. Aidan is in the back, he received a very important phone call just before you arrived. It shouldn’t take him long.” It seemed that Simon’s tactic with the lawyer worked. The company that owed Aidan money had called, and they were eager to reach an agreement. Devyn followed Simon toward the front room, making note of the white and orange tabby that eyed him with curiosity from its perch on the sofa. “Is that Aidan’s?” Devyn asked, making his way over to pet the cat. “Nope, Wilson belongs to me. Adopted him from an animal shelter, he’s a friendly fellow, but likes to remind me that he’s in charge.” Devyn laughed, “Yes, they usually do.”
32

Aidan walked in wearing form fitting jeans and a dark blue shirt that brought out the specks of blue in his gray eyes. Devyn found the effect stunning. Aidan walked over to him and petted the cat. “I see you’ve met Wilson.” “Yes, he and I are getting acquainted,” Devyn answered, unable to tear away from ogling Aidan. “Careful, or Wilson will expect you to cater to his every need. Trust me, he can be quite demanding.” Aidan smiled shyly, noticing Devyn’s stare. Simon picked up his kitty and cradled it in his arms. “Wilson’s not that bad, he’s just used to a certain style of living, that’s all.” He placed a kiss on top of the cat’s head, and it purred contentedly. Aidan grinned. “If your fans could see how the big macho quarterback acted around Wilson, they’d revoke your man card.” “Hell.” Simon smirked. “If they knew my best friend is queer, they’d question my manhood. Let them say what they want about me. It’s not going to change who I am, nor am I going to conform just because I’m going against what society expects me to do. It’s my life. To me, being a man is not about how much ass you can kick or get, it’s about respecting all forms of life. It’s not about judging, it’s about acceptance and tolerance.” “Wow, so much for the big dumb jock stereotype,” Aidan teased. “When did you get all philosophical? Didn’t you tell
33

me that the world would be a better place if people got more—what did you call it—nookie?” “Well, of course I still believe that.” Simon’s grin widened. Aidan turned to Devyn and laughed, “My friend, the hedonist philosopher.” He jabbed his thumb in Simon’s direction. Simon smiled and decided to change the subject. His curiosity got the best of him. He was anxious to learn how Aidan’s conversation on the phone went: had the company come to an agreement or would Simon have to call his lawyers again? “The phone call—did everything turn out okay?” Simon asked Aidan as discreetly as he could. “Yeah, we’re meeting tomorrow morning, and things should be settled after that,” Aidan said. Devyn raised an eyebrow, curious as to what the two friends were referring to, but thought it too impolite to ask directly. “Should I be jealous?” he asked, hoping he didn’t have to compete with some ex-lover for Aidan’s attention. “What?” Aidan question at first.

“Oh! No, no, no. That was just a business call. I’m not dating anyone. Well, I mean, I’m dating you… that is, we’re going on a date, but I’m not ‘dating’ anyone else.” Aidan frowned, feeling a bit flustered. He doubted that made any sense. Devyn walked over to Aidan and smiled, feeling relieved. He wasn’t usually the jealous type, but Devyn thought it important to make it clear what his intentions were. “I like you too. I’m not seeing anyone right now, but I’d like it to be you.” “Me too,” Aidan returned the smile. It seemed no matter how nervous he got around Devyn, the wedding planner knew exactly what to say to make Aidan feel better. “You two lovebirds should get a move on it or the place will get so crowded you won’t be able to find a seat.” Simon grinned. “He’s right.” Aidan grabbed his winter jacket and held the door open for Devyn. “Shall we?” “How gentlemanly,” Devyn commented with a smile. “Never had anyone hold open a door for me before. I may have to keep you.” Simon leaned against the door frame like a proud parent watching his teenager go on their first date. He took Wilson’s paw and had the cat wave good-bye to Devyn and Aidan. “Have fun,” he called out to them as they drove off. Once he stepped back inside, he picked up his cell phone and dialed Tabitha’s number.

THE café was moderately crowded by the time Aidan and Devyn arrived. “Find us a seat, and I’ll get the drinks. What would you like?” Aidan asked. “A large chai tea.” Devyn took out some money but Aidan looked insulted so he quickly put it away without argument. “This is a date, remember?” “I thought I was going to pay,” Devyn answered, smiling. “I asked you out, I pay.” “So, by your logic, if I ask you out next time, then I can pay?” Devyn’s smile widened. “We can discuss that later.” Devyn laughed softly. “I’ll go find us a seat.” “Wait, I forgot to ask if you were hungry. They have great sandwiches here.” “Are you getting something?” “Yeah, I like their ham and swiss.” Devyn scanned the menu. “Turkey club, no mayo.” “As you wish,” Aidan smiled shyly at him and got in line.

Devyn found Aidan’s old-fashioned manners endearing. His last couple of boyfriends fell short on the chivalry scale. A romantic at heart, Aidan’s gallant conduct was certainly leaving a favorable impression with him. He found a table for two by the window, looking out at the beach. The area was lit up with Christmas lights that sparkled against the darkened sky. There were a couple of holiday shoppers about, carrying their brightly colored packages as they held hands with their partner or spouse. Devyn hoped to someday have something similar. He looked over to where Aidan stood in line. Maybe one day, he could. For the most part, Devyn had the worst of luck when it came to men; some were too jealous, others took him for granted, and then there were the unsettling stalker types. But all those experiences helped him to better define what to look for in a relationship. Sometimes you had to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince. Devyn placed his coat on one of the empty chairs and turned to grab some napkins, sugar packets, and spoons off the condiment table. Aidan appeared with their drinks and sandwiches, carefully placing Devyn’s order in front of him. “I do have hands you know,” Devyn joked. “Sorry, I—” “Don’t worry, I like it. You’re making me feel special.” Devyn reached out and lightly touched Aidan’s hand. “You are special.” Aidan looked him in the eye, his cheeks flushed to a bright red.

Devyn had worked in the wedding business for a couple of years now and heard all types of vows and oaths, but this had to be the most romantic thing anyone had ever said to him. Devyn’s ex-boyfriends had told him that they loved him, adored him, some even claimed to have worshiped him, but those words had been whispered hastily in the aftermath of sex. Aidan’s words held a sincerity that Devyn had not experienced, and it made his heart melt. He could really fall hard for the shy songwriter. The couple started to talk again about hobbies and sports they followed. Aidan was a big Redwoods fan and Devyn had never watched a football game in his life, so Aidan proceeded to explain the game to him and offered to take Devyn on a date to Simon’s next home game. At the mention of a second date Devyn’s smile widened. He had never had an interest in the sport before, but he was willing to give it a chance and see how he liked it. After all, were relationships not about compromise? Besides, Devyn had a safety net. Aidan mentioned that if Devyn hated it, he would not force Devyn to go again. Devyn squeezed Aidan’s hand reassuringly. “It sounds like it could be fun. I’ll give it a try.” Aidan’s eyes lit up like a child’s on Christmas Day. They spent the rest of the time enjoying each other’s company, occasionally holding hands, lacing their fingers together as they took a short stroll along the boardwalk. The weather was chilly, but not uncomfortable, serving as a good excuse for Aidan to put his arm around Devyn and pull him

close when they stopped to watch the moonlight reflect off the waves. Aidan cupped Devyn’s chin, his thumb caressing Devyn’s bottom lip. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to kiss my dance instructor,” he whispered. “I’m not your instructor, yet.” Devyn leaned up and pressed his lips against Aidan’s. The songwriter allowed himself to get lost in the sweet surrender of their first kiss.

III: MAY
DEVYN and Aidan spent the next few months getting to know one another. They attended Redwoods games and cheered on Simon—after attending a few of these football games, Devyn had grown to like the sport—and even hosted a Super Bowl party. Their relationship grew steadily, both of them finding excitement in discovering one another emotionally and physically. By the fourth month of their partnership, Devyn was spending the night regularly. Aidan loved waking up to see Devyn wrapped in his arms, nestled against him as he slept. Aidan called Devyn his muse because the music he composed reflected the love Aidan felt in his heart for Devyn. Aidan’s popularity spread, and while he did not become an overnight sensation, his lyrics and music were highly sought out by the big name studios. Aidan was recently contracted to do the soundtrack of a major motion picture. Devyn and he had spent the entire night in solitude, celebrating. Aidan traced his fingers along the curve of Devyn’s naked skin. He had always hoped for love, but never thought it possible, but Devyn changed all of that. He was the single

most important thing in Aidan’s life… and he had yet to tell his parents about Devyn. They lived in Florida, so it was not difficult for Aidan to keep his relationships hidden. But as the month for Chyna’s wedding drew closer, Aidan knew that he had to tell his parents about Devyn. Aidan never told them about his alternative lifestyle for fear of rejection, and with his past boyfriends, it had never seemed important enough to mention. Devyn was different. Their relationship had grown serious, and while they had not talked about commitment ceremonies or moving in together, it was something that was going to happen in their foreseeable future. “You okay?” he heard Devyn’s sleepy voice. “Yeah, just thinking how lucky I am.” Devyn kissed the side of Aidan’s neck. “Me too.” “My parents are due to visit soon. I want to tell them about us.” “Are you sure? I mean, we can pretend to be good friends until you’re ready to talk to them about it.” Devyn sat up, looking a bit alarmed. “I know that I’m the risk taker, and I tease you about being so cautious, but I didn’t mean to pressure you.” Aidan pulled him back into his arms. “You’re not. This is my decision, and you’re an important part of my life. They

need to be aware of who I really am and what you mean to me.” Devyn nodded, a look of concern etched on his face. “Don’t worry, no matter what my parents say or what their reaction to us is, it won’t stop me from loving you and wanting to be with you.” Devyn leaned in to kiss Aidan, and the two ended up making love once more.
THE day the Byrnes arrived was met with some anxiety by everyone. Chyna and Kris had gone to the airport to pick them up while the others gathered at Aidan’s. Devyn paced; he couldn’t remember the last time he felt so nervous. His concern was more with Aidan’s parents accepting Aidan’s way of life than what they would think about him. Devyn knew that Aidan would be devastated if his parents rejected him. He looked over at Aidan and bit down on his lower lip. Aidan walked over to his lover and kissed the back of Devyn’s hand, assuring him that it was going to be okay. “I should be the one pacing and biting my nails. Just relax, babe. It’ll work out one way or another,” he told Devyn with an air of confidence. A few months ago, Aidan doubted he could have felt so sure, but Devyn’s influence had a positive effect on Aidan. Usually it was Devyn giving him the “don’t worry” speech. It felt good to be able to return the favor.
42

He pulled Devyn close to him. “I don’t like seeing you this upset. You want to talk about it? ” “I’m just worried for you, that’s all.” “You’re worried that if things go bad, I’ll blame you?” “Well, no, not exactly… but now that you mention it….” Aidan kissed Devyn on the forehead. “I’m not going to blame you, I promise.” “Trust me, kid, there’s nothing to worry about. I’ve know the Byrnes for sixteen years, and I’ve never seen them act prejudiced toward anyone or anything. I’m sure they are going to welcome you into the family. That’s when the real trouble starts. You’ll be asked to attend holiday parties and don’t even think about saying no. Mrs. Byrne won’t have it,” Simon said with a smile. They heard the front door open and Chyna, who carried a spare key to her brother’s home, walked in followed by Kris who was temporarily buried behind a pile of suitcases. Devyn and Aidan immediately went over and helped Kris carry the luggage to the spare bedroom. The Byrnes arrived in a bustle of hugs and handshakes. They congratulated Simon on his beautiful girlfriend, Tabitha. They handed out gifts for all who were gathered, including Devyn. “For me?” he asked, surprised. “Of course,” Mrs. Byrne smiled at him, a twinkle in her gray eyes. “Go ahead, open it.”
43
Take a Chance on Me ♥ Sasha Skye
Devyn opened the package. Inside was a beautiful silver frame in the shape of a tree. On one side, the name Byrne was engraved on top. At the tip of each branch were leafshaped borders that held small photos of Mr. and Mrs. Byrne and Chyna. One the other side of the frame, the name Eden was engraved and was adorned with the pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Eden. On the bottom the branches crossed, and they held the pictures of Aidan and Devyn. There was a note attached that read, “Welcome to our family.” Devyn couldn’t help it; tears filled his eyes. He looked at Mrs. Byrne, speechless. She held out her arms to him, and he hugged her tightly. Aidan went over and hugged them both. “You knew about this?” Devyn asked him, wiping his tears away. “Guilty as charged. I called them one day when you were at work. It surprised me how well they took the news, and said they wanted to do something special for you. They asked me for your mom’s number so they could get the pictures.” “We had our suspicions about Aidan for a while. We figured that when he was ready, he would tell us himself. And when he did, he told us all about you and how important you are to him. We wanted to let you know that you’re an important member of this family as well.” Mrs. Byrne smiled warmly at Devyn. All Devyn could do in response was hug her.

IV: JUNE
THE day of Chyna’s wedding the temperature reached a blistering ninety-eight degrees Fahrenheit, not including the humidity. There was a cool wind that occasionally blew off the sea, helping to relieve some of the heat. But it was Devyn who helped save the guests from heat exposure. He supplied an ample tent to help block out the rays of the sun and had ice cold bottled water available. Chyna looked stunning in her sleeveless gown. A crown of pink roses helped make up the base of her veil, which blew softly in the ocean breeze. Kristopher caught his breath when he saw her. Throughout the ceremony, they looked at each other with complete adoration, the love clearly showing on their faces. When it was done, Kris happily kissed his bride, and the guests toasted the newlyweds with cider, tossing pink rose petals and birdseed into the air. Aidan grabbed Devyn and kissed him passionately as rose petals fluttered around them like pink butterflies. Aidan doubted another magical moment like this would present itself, so he seized the opportunity. “Would you care to help me plan another wedding, Devyn? This one might be more of a challenge as it involves two men. What do you say?” The

state they lived in may not accept same sex marriages, but that was not going to keep Aidan from “proposing.” Aidan would be content with a handfasting or commitment ceremony as long as he and Devyn were together. “I do,” Devyn answered with a dazzling smile, pulling his lover closer. “I most definitely do.”
