THE ESSENCE OF BENEFIT AND }OY:
A METHOD FOR THE SAVING OF LIVES
by
Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye
SIDDHI PUBLICATIONS Vancouver, Canada 2000
NAMO GURU DHEVA D~ YE
The most beneficial of all composite roots of virtue is the protection and ransoming of the lives of sentient beings. A variety of that is saving the lives of livestock, which frees those animals from present danger to their lives. Through the blessing of their being offered to the three jewels, and of their hearing names and dharanis, they will be ultimately freed from inferior births. Through the power of that, and as the result concordant with the cause, the practitioners themselves will undoubtedly receive benefits, such as an increased lifespan. If this is done in a ritual context it is more poweiful. Therefore, I will explain it here as found in the applications of the dharmakaya guru from Tukdrup Barchey Kunsel. With silk or cotton, adorn the ears and so forth of those whose lives will be saved. 3
In the buddha, dharma and supreme assembly I take refuge until awakening. Through the merit of my practice of generosity and the rest May buddhahood be accomplished for the benefit of beings.
(repeat 3 times) With that, take refuge and generate bodhicitta. Then, sprinkle pure water on the animals. Cleanse with:

From the unconceptualized emptiness of all things The animals possessing Flesh, blood, warmth, breath and mind Are in essence the actual five primordial mothers, In appearance the aggregates of the five families, Possessing their individual appearances, Emanating innumerable· desirables. In the sky in front is a palace With complete ornamentation. Inside it, on a four-petaled variegated lotus, Precious thrones upheld by elephants, lions, steeds, Peacocks and shang-shangs, On lotus, sun, and moon seats, Are the bhagavats, the five families ofAmitayu, White, blue, yellow, red, and green in color, With one face and two hands, Holding vases of immortality in the mudra of meditation. 5
They are embraced by their light, the supreme mothers, the five dhatishvaris, Holding their respective emblems and life vases, And are adorned by silk and jewelry. They are all seated in the vajra and lotus postures In an expanse of oscillating rays of light. Surrounding them, on an eightpetaled lotus, Are the offering goddess of grace and the others. In the four gates are the four vajra messengers. Amongst them are the three roots and deities of life. Blazing with the splendor of blessing, All are marked at their three places by OM, Al:r and HOM, Which radiate rays of light, Inviting the wisdom deities. Protectors of all beings without exception, 6
Conquerors of the irresistible forces of Mara, Knowers of all things just as they are, Bhagavats, with your retinues, please come to this place. VAJARASAMATAI:I JAI:I HO¥ BAM Ho:a A TI Pu Ho:a PRATi'ccHA Hoi:I

If I respectfully offer The animals possessing Flesh, blood, warmth, breath and mind, In essence the actual five primordial mothers, 7
In appearance the aggregates of the five families, Possessing their individual appearances, Emanating innumerable desirables, To the deities of the five-fold mandala of life, Accept them with great pleasure. Please protect them from the present danger of death And ultimately from all the suffering Of samsara and inferior states. Light radiated from my heart exhorts the front visualization. Rays of light emanated from them Absorb the vitality of existence and tranquillity, Especially the essences of the five elements, All of which dissolves into myself and those to be benefited. The impaired five elements are restored. We gain the five families' mastery of lifespan.
Reciting that, think it is so. Then: OM vAJRA ARGHAM PADYAM PuSPE DHOPE ALoKE GRANDE NAIVEDYA SABDA

Offer with that. The praise: In nature the five wisdoms,
Bhagavats, the five families of Amitayu, United with the mothers, the pure five elements, I praise the five families, the lords of life. Bhagavats, deities of life, Restore the damaged life and merit Of myself and the innumerable sentient beings. Bestow the siddhi of the five families' mastery of lifespan. Praise and supplicate with that. Then:
The mandala of intmortality present in the sky in front, both residence and inhabitants, melts into light, in nature great bliss, and dissolves into myself and those to be benefited. Our 10
impaired five elements are restored. We gain all the five families' siddhis of life and wisdom. Reciting that, generate certainty. This is an especially fine method for restoring impaired vitality of the five elements all at once. Excerpted from the text by Jamgon Perna Garwang Lodro Thaye.
