The General’s Maiden
Chapter One As the youngest general in the kingdom of Æthica, Iairus had been honoured for his ruthlessness in battle. At 23 years of age, he was a prime specimen. His dark hair, panther-like gleaming eyes, and a frame that stood at over six foot ensured he was a man to be noticed. He was gifted with the kind of shoulder breadth that made women swoon and the blacksmith grumble over the size of the armour he had to beat out of bronze. He knew his reputation as a general was legion but in other corridors, stories of his prowess in bed were whispered by dreamy-eyed women. He had received untold wealth and titles for his victories but he had asked the emperor for the sylph-like beauty in front of him. Even his admirers shuddered at his exploits—their admiration tinged with fear. “Bring her in.” She was almost dragged in between two soldiers. Her face was like fine porcelain, her nose patrician. Her eyes were a beautiful green and her hair was a glorious red that reminded him of the angry glow of a dying flame. He saw that she bore her fear well and only her pride and arrogance shone through. 5

He smiled as he stood up. He knew with all the confidence of a hunter that he had his prey comfortably in his sights. “Alexia, you came.” “I was forced here, as you’re very much aware,” was the sibilant hiss from her cupid bow lips. He gestured for the soldiers to leave. She turned to look at them and he sensed a certain desperation. He approached her with measured strides. He saw her swallow and that delicate movement gently flirting along her white throat made desire zing along his veins. He had waited long for this. He had her in his grasp. She would grace his bed. “Look at me,” he spoke softly. She turned her eyes towards him. For the first time, he saw that a fine shimmer of tears graced their surface. “I’ve made you cry.” Her eyes blazed. “No, you arrogant whelp, it’s not you nor your puerile desires that make me weep.” He jerked. He felt a lick of temper touch his nerves. He had to visibly control himself. “You’re either foolish or very brave. Others have died for less and not painlessly.” “Do I need to bow in fear now before a barbarian?” Her words fell from lips that were so tight with rage he felt the urge to taunt her. He moved towards her but she stood her ground. He grasped her face in his calloused hand 6

but she turned away. With a finger he turned her face back towards him. “My spitting wild cat,” he mocked gently. “Dear Alexia, you’re mine. When I saw you at my victory celebrations dancing on Demos’ arm, I knew you’d be mine.” She jerked away. “Don’t even mention my brother. I don’t want his name on your foul lips.” He just smiled. She does not know me, he told himself. If she did, she’d have been very careful as a smile from the brave general Iairus was no cause for comfort. “There will be more than a name on your lips soon,” he countered. “You vulgar soldier. You’re sick desires don’t interest me. I just want to get back home.” His lips tightened briefly. “You know you’re my victory prize. I can keep you as long as I want—as my wife or my lover. You’re going nowhere.” “I’d rather die at the jaws of the mad panthers in the arena.” Impatient with her open defiance, he whispered, “Would you like to see young Demos battle the raving panthers? It can be easily arranged.” She paled. “Keep away from my brother. I’ll never forgive you and not rest until I have you lying dead at my feet if you dare to endanger him.” The sheer audacity of her declaration threw him. He laughed. 7

Stepping forward, she spat in his face. Her spittle landed on his cheek and one eye. Her rage was no excuse for her actions. He’d teach her a lesson. Who better than he to tutor her in other ways, too? He stopped laughing and grabbed her. “You witch. I’ll teach you to spit on me.” He dragged her towards a door while she fought him in complete panic. Her fear and desperation imbued her with strength he was not prepared for. She tore away from his hands. In a final gesture of contempt, she bent and picked up her sandal and threw it at him. She turned and ran to the doors through which the soldiers had brought her. Alexia raced out of the doors as if the very devil were after her. Well she may run—when he was finished with her, she would wish for the hounds of hell. One barked command from him and her progress was stopped. She was dragged back towards Iairus, and thrown into the room. He locked the door and took her by the hand. She tried to pull away but he would brook no refusal from her. He just swept her into his arms and carried her to the door. She wriggled and pounded on his chest. “Leave me alone, you brute. Wait until my father gets his hands on you.” He pushed open the door to his private quarters. She began to fight him in earnest now. A few more steps carried him into an inner sanctuary of sorts and he set her none too gently on her feet. 8
The General’s Maiden
She stilled in his arms like the prey who knew the end was very near. What she saw there froze her blood. Her heart pounded. She felt a rushing in her ears. She must be strong. She would not let this brute defeat her. She turned to him and Iairus smiled. She understood now why both enemies and friends feared him. The emperor too, it was said, secretly feared him and hence kept him close. “I thought you’d like company.” “I don’t care for your sense of humour,” she replied. “Come greet our guest. Let’s be hospitable.” She forced her leaden feet to move. Her little sister ran towards her. “Alexia, how happy I am to see you. Iairus said he would like me to stay. I’ve been playing here and see what I found.” Alexia could barely find her voice. “Leah, baby sister, it’s wonderful to have you here. I hope father and mother are not missing you.” “No, they said I should go with Iairus and do as he tells me. He wants me to stay with you for a while.” Alexia turned to him, her eyes filled with a desperate plea. Iairus looked at her. “Run along and play outside, Leah. We’ll join you in a moment.” They watched her leave and Iairus turned to Alexia. “She’s my guarantee that you will heed my wishes. She’s a bit old to be starting as a slave but I have no choice, do I?” 9
Katina Abram
Her heart nearly stopped. “She’s only fourteen,” she whispered. “Dear God, please don’t do this. She is but a child. She doesn’t deserve this. I beg you not to do this.” Iairus clapped his hands and from some secret entrance, a soldier walked in. “Bring my cousin here immediately.” “Yes, sir,” was the ready response. In a few moments he was back. The youth accompanying him was tall and handsome. He shared his cousin’s dark eyes. His face was marred by a thin scar that lifted a corner of the lip giving the impression that he was sporting an ironic smile. “Come Kharos, meet Alexia. Her sister Leah will be staying with us. She’s outside. Keep her amused while Alexia and I talk business.” Kharos greeted her with a smile and a questioning look and left in search of Leah. Alexia stood in shock. As they reached the door, Kharos looked over his shoulder and smiled. He looked very much like Iairus then. When the door closed behind them, Alexis flew at Iairus. She scratched him and shouted abuse at him. Iairus calmly took her hands and cruelly tightened his hands around them until she winced. “He won’t know my plans of making her a slave. He will just see her as a family friend.” Alexia began weeping. “Have mercy, Iairus. I can’t bear it if she is to become a slave.” “Now, that lies entirely in your hands then, doesn’t it?” was the heartless answer. “Please, I can’t. I simply can’t.” 10
The General’s Maiden
“What are you afraid of? I only want your exquisite body; one would think that I was taking your soul.” “You might as well be,” she said. Iairus looked at her quizzically. “Well then, what shall we do now? Let’s see. Yes, come with me. I’ll show you our rooms.” Alexia wanted to kick him. Her heart felt anguished. She hoped her parents would be safe. As for Demos, it would be best if she got word to him to leave the city. How was she going to do that? By all the Gods, how was she going to manage? What about her life? Would Iairus drag into bed right now? Would Leah be safe? “I can hear your brain working overtime. Relax. You cannot ever escape me. Give me what I want and I’ll make sure your family is all right.” “My family means everything to me.” “Your parents are safe. My guards only have orders to expel them from their home on my orders. As for Demos, it can always be arranged to have him fighting the panthers. You know what to do to keep things good for your family. “You heartless excuse for a human being. How dare you? Who gave you the right to take over my life?” “I gave myself the right. I’m a celebrated general and if this country cannot give me what I want, then it is sad indeed.” “Now the emperor is acting as a procurer, I see.” Iairus turned on her with frightening speed. 11
Katina Abram
“Let’s see if we can find something for your mouth to do, so you can’t aggravate me.” He caught her face in his hands and bent his head. “Don’t bite me. My patience is almost at an end, I’m warning you.” Alexia watched his head descend and his lips brushed against hers gently. The tip of his tongue flicked against hers and she pushed him away. He ignored her and, holding both her hands in one of his, he used the other to tilt her head for his convenience. His lips marauded hers, sharp bites interspersed with hot licks, until she couldn’t feel anymore. Alexia couldn’t breathe in her panic. He’d completely sealed their lips and didn’t allow her to move. Her panicked gaze met his. She saw it was his intention to bend her to his will. She began struggling but he wouldn’t release her. Instead, his fingers held her jaw firmly and the kiss went on. She felt faint but he wouldn’t let up. The strange sensations coursing through her body left her breathless. When she moaned, he lifted his head, breaking the kiss. Alexia breathed in greedily and without warning he sealed their lips again. This time, his one hand cupped her breast and the other her bottom as he brought her flush against him. She fought madly but he didn’t relent in his desire to teach her a lesson. His gentle foray against her breast and slight rubbing of her nipple filled her with strange sensations. She felt as if she were melting and in 12

sheer panic, she fought his hold. “I hate you, you animal,” she said when he released her mouth from his assault. “Hate me all you want, but I will have you— you’re mine and mine you’ll stay.” Alexia brushed away the tears on her face. “I don’t want you to ‘have me’ as you so queerly put it. I’m not an object but a person.” “You’re the object of my desire.” “I’ll only bed the man I wed.” “Alexia, do you really believe that this is going to happen? Don’t you understand that once you are my mistress, you and your family will lack for nothing? Your brother can enter the army and rise in its ranks and make general one day.” “I don’t think that my family wants me to earn them a good life on my back.” He whispered, “It doesn’t only have to be on your back. There are many variations.” She reddened in rage and embarrassment. “Can’t you get it through your battle worn head that we are happy as we are? My brother is a scholar not a warrior. As for my sister, she would do better at home with a tutor. How can you even think of her slaving away for a family after the genteel life she has been used to?” “With a snap of my fingers, I can take all that your family has. Your sister can be tutored by Kharos. So stop this. Get used to the fact that after the party tonight, you’ll be mine and your family will be fine. Defy me, and Leah may well start a 13

new career overnight and you a new life as my mistress.” Alexis said quietly. “I can’t let you touch me. I mustn’t. It would kill me if you took me to bed.” Iairus looked at with an eyebrow raised. “I have yet to have a woman die in my bed. Le petit mort—now many have experienced that.” She looked at him blankly. He kept forgetting that she was innocent. The women he bedded regularly were experienced enough to cope with his desires. He rewarded them with pleasure but only after making sure his desires were met. If that meant that some women had to be carried out of his bed in exhaustion or unable to walk, she didn’t have to know that. “Alexia, let’s not make a drama out of this. I’m being incredibly patient. I’ll let you go home. After the celebrations, you can say your farewells to your family and return here. Don’t try anything foolish. You’ll live to regret it.” Alexia was silent. She felt the trap closing over her. She cursed her beauty had brought this on her head. Her parents had known when the soldiers had come for her. The desperation in their eyes had been painful to see. She made up her mind to escape and thinking quickly, she spoke. “Iairus, I would like to come to you a week after the celebrations. My parents are celebrating the harvest. I’d like to be there with them and meet my kinsman. I’ll also be able to spend time with my family and settle the accounts for the 14

labourers. Leah can meet her friends and tell them about being tutored.” Her words had him watching her closely. “Remember, Alexia. No one has made a fool of me and lived to speak of it.” “I understand your message as clearly as the gong that strikes in the arena.” **** Soon she was sitting in the chariot with Leah. Her pretty sister was excited about being in the ‘Panther’s Lair’ as people referred to Iairus’ fine mansion. Leah mentioned Kharos often but Alexia barely heard her as she felt only dread. They arrived home and were greeted by Demos and their parents. Her father studied her closely. “How are you?” “I am fine, father. How happy I am to see you!” Her mother’s arms around her gave her comfort but her mind was racing to escape Iairus and ensure her family’s safety. Once Leah went to catch up with the neighbours, Alexia and her family hurried to their courtyard. They could speak without fear of being overheard. Alexia told them the bitter tale. When she finished, she was shocked to see tears in her brave father’s eyes. “Alexia, there is no hope. We have to be very careful.” “Father,” remonstrated Demos. “I can kill the general. He is but a man.”

Before her father could begin his diatribe about Demos being a scholar and would it not have been better if he had trained to be a soldier, Alexia interrupted him. “Demos, I love you my young brother. For a young man of seventeen to assassinate Iairus is only a dream. It would endanger all of us and get you into the panther arena. Listen to me. Take father and mother to our uncle. He’s a good day’s journey from us. “No one knows that he is mother’s brother and will not look for you all there. You must leave the night of the celebrations. No one will miss you for a few days. Everyone will think that you are in our plantations nearby for the tallying of the harvest. You can make good your escape. “I shall leave with Leah a day after so as not to arouse any suspicion. When we meet in uncle’s house, he will make sure that we are all safe. After all, he has a whole wing of a house built underground for when people come from the sky. “We can into hiding there as long as want. Soon, we’ll be forgotten and then we can start our lives elsewhere.” Her father smiled tiredly. “It is good to have a strange brother-in-law. See, he is coming in useful.” Her mother’s smile was tremulous. “I am afraid we have no choice.” Demos looked unhappy. “How can you and Leah make it on your own without a chaperon? 16
The General’s Maiden
“We can—we have to. I will take our small chariot and you know I drive well. When Iairus sees Leah and me together, neither he nor anyone else will suspect that you have all left. This is our best gamble.” Reluctantly, the family agreed. They also decided not to tell Leah the truth and knew she wouldn’t guess anything. She would travel happily with her sister. Fortunately, her family was totally unaware of Alexia’s mixed feelings for Iairus.

Chapter Two The party was in full swing. The dancers were fluid as their well-trained bodies swung in rhythm to the drums that beat out an incessant beat. Alexia’s heart beat kept time and her face was pale beneath her make up. Leah was with her friends with strict instructions to meet her in the garden when the moon rose over the olive tree in the inner courtyard. She was happy in her innocence and Alexia would keep it that way. A falcon’s sharp short cry sounded in the distance and the predatory call raised the hair along the back of Alexia’s neck. Even as she stood there watching the dancers, a hand snaked around her waist. She turned to see Iairus, resplendent in his official garb. He smiled at her and Alexis felt her heartbeat quicken and together with a rage like she had never felt before. She didn’t deign to smile back. “No smile for me?” he queried. “I only give my smiles for free. They can’t be ordered.” “You’d be surprised as to how much can be ordered.” She looked at him. “I’m trying to enjoy myself.” 18
The General’s Maiden
He bowed ironically. “Please continue. I’ll go see how Leah is doing. I sent Kharos after her. He is enamoured.” Alexia relaxed. Leah could not leak any information. She dismissed him with a “Be my guest,” and turned away. She missed his dark reaction to this less than cordial dismissal and disappeared into the crowds. Her heart was not in the dancing as she swung from one partner to another. How would this night turn out? Would Iairus keep his word and not taunt her with his advances? Would she able to resist his charms? She was quite dizzy with worry when strong arms whirled her out of the dance right out to the outer courtyard. She looked up into the piercing eyes of the only person she did not want to see. “I must tell you that you look ravishing.” “Good to know, though I wish you wouldn’t use the word ravishing.” He laughed. “I won’t, but you can’t blame me. I understand what the poets mean when they write of lips as luscious as peaches. I want to taste them.” Without warning he bent and kissed her hard. She felt the warmth of his lips and breath. Her body responded to him like the morning glory opened itself to the caress of the dawn. He was obviously very experienced if his kiss alone could make her this mindless. Something snapped in her head when she thought of how this experience had been gained. 19

Countless eager hearts had been broken by his thoughtless cruelty to his lovers. Tales of young girls wanting to throw themselves under his chariot in despair filled households. Women secluded from the exploits of their men shared in happy gossip the details of Iairus’ countless exploits. He kept away from men and didn’t play Ganymede either. She bit down mercilessly on his bottom lip. This should teach him to go kissing vulnerable maidens and breaking hearts with his callousness. “I hope your poets spoke of crimson drops like red rose petals as well,” she taunted. His whole demeanour changed. “You brat,” he snarled. Before she guessed his intentions, he wrapped his mantle around her and she was spirited away. Her muffled cries were ignored. He held her tightly against his strong chest. He climbed a lot of stairs and her heart sank. This must be the way to his private chambers. He dropped her on a divan. She looked up to see his wrathful countenance. “Shall we see how brave you are now, my vixen? He dragged her to her feet. With one pull of his hand, her cloak lay in tatters. Her hair was ruthlessly pulled down. When he placed his hands on the neckline of her gown, she went mad. She screamed and screeched; fear in every note that sounded from her throat. He silenced her by placing his hand over her mouth, silencing her desperate protests. She 20

couldn’t move—daren’t move. There was silence in the tension-fraught room that witnessed this drama. She saw him smile in obvious triumph and her shuddering breath kept time with her racing heart. He placed his hands on the top of her gown and she could see the devil in his gaze. “Do you know what I’m going to do?” She shook her head in mute despair while a thousand thoughts chased around frantically. She cursed herself for her temper. She felt a pressure in her chest as he tightened his hold on the neckline. He lifted her off her feet and threw her down on the divan. She bounced and in the same breath pleaded. “No Iairus, you promised to give me time.” He ignored her pleas. He lowered himself onto her body and she felt his weight inexorably push her into the mattress. The cushions gave her arms no leeway to push him off. He didn’t move. His eyes mesmerized hers and holding her gaze, he took both her wrists in his one hand and secured it well above her head. With the other hand, he began undoing her gown. Only three ties stood in his way. He flicked them open and pushed his hand in, his fingers brushing against her heaving breasts. “If you could look at yourself now; you look like a tiny fawn caught in a hunter’s net. Or are you the dove in the falcon’s claws?” As he spoke, his fingers rubbed her nipples. He dipped his head and licked the innocent pink nipples. 21

She shuddered in reluctant arousal. “Let go of me, I don’t want this!” “When in the panther’s lair, it is the panther that gets what he wants.” “They say the panther was forged in Hades, they must be right. You have to be his very spawn.” His response was to tug at her nipples with his teeth, nipping sharply. She resisted the unfamiliar feeling that this brought to her very core of her and closed her eyes. If she knew men, she would have known that his body was screaming for her. He lifted her gown. His hands went unerringly through her underclothes to what he was seeking. His fingers played with her pubis and she shuddered with fear at this intrusion. She was twenty-one and had heard giggling kitchen girls. She had even explored the mysteries of her body once. Her voice hoarse, she rasped, “You promised me more time. I heard you’re a man of honour.” “I’ve no honour or mercy for she-devils.” He wet his finger in his mouth and pushing her underclothes aside, he touched her pubis. Slowly, he pushed the delicate hair away and found his target. He rubbed the little hood. “How does that feel?” She couldn’t speak. Fear mingled with pleasure like she’d never experienced made her captive to silence. The stirring of her body was confusing. He smiled. “Let’s try that again, shall we?” He repeated his action and then ran his index finger insistently on the hood. She winced in 22

shame. He now flicked the little bud. Her cheeks felt flushed. He watched her and she read a heartless triumph there. She shook her head wordlessly, begging with her eyes. His index finger was now making forays into her passage. She was only a little moist but he persisted. When she flinched, quickly he withdrew. “I don’t want to hurt you. Tell me, Alexia.” She watched him as he rubbed her lower lip. “Doesn’t one good deed deserve another?” She didn’t understand. “Isn’t it only right that I should draw first blood, too?” The question shook her out of her helpless state and she tried to throw him off. She was no match for him and he laughed. She arched her body but to no avail. “Prepare yourself—the time has come.” In the next second, Alexia felt a needle prick of pain as he nipped the top of her right breast. He licked her nipple, gently blowing on it till she felt goose pimples along her jaw and arm. Her struggle with her handsome captor in the chamber became a battle of wills. She tried to deny the excitement that her body was only too willing to betray. She bit her lip so hard to stop responding to Iairus that she barely noticed that he had stopped. “You’re lip is bleeding,” He licked the tiny spot of blood. “Now, we have partaken of each other. I 23

own you through this first blood exchange. Let’s find Leah and Kharos.” Shaken, Alexia let him pull her to her feet. He silently helped her get her clothes in order. “Please Iairus, leave Leah alone.” “Oh, I intend to but if things don’t go my way, Kharos will have to be told that he has to place her as a slave. Don’t worry. He’ll find a good home for her.” “No, no, please forgive me. I’ll never give you cause to lose your temper with me.” “I’m not sure I trust this lute playing a different tune. Convince me.” Alexia licked her swollen lips. “I can only give you my word that this won’t happen again.” She went on her toes and forced herself to place her hands around him and put her face to his chest. When she felt that his heart beat steadily and in no way pounded like hers, she wanted to kill him. She quickly erased her feelings from her face and looked at him. Cold eyes studied her until she was reminded of the panther that had once escaped the arena and had cornered a little child, its tail wagging menacingly and its eyes fixed unwaveringly—the eyes of an indiscriminate killer. He pulled her close. “Last warning,” was all he said. **** They went downstairs. Alexia’s hair was covered with his cloak and they met Leah and

Kharos. Leah was all flushed with the catch game they had been playing with the other young people. She hugged her sister and over her shoulder looked into Kharos’ eyes. The intensity and sympathy with which he seemed to be looking at her made her eyes fill up. She stepped back and surreptitiously wiped her eyes. “Are you crying, Alexia?” Leah’s voice sounded worried. “Yes, she is. I proposed to your sister and she has accepted,” Iairus announced. Leah jumped up and down with excitement. “I am so happy for you. Our parents will be delighted.” Alexia stood still stunned by his abrupt announcement. She turned towards him, but he wouldn’t look her way. “I’m sure they will be. Come, little sister. I may call you that, I hope?” Yes, Iairus. Aren’t you happy for them Kharos?” “I am, little one, I am.” “Let’s go home. The chariot is waiting.” “Where are your parents? Why are they not here tonight?” The words stopped Alexia in her tracks. She quickly mumbled her practiced answer. Iairus extended his hand and when she placed her hand in his, he bent and kissed it. Only she felt the sudden sharp nip and she didn’t dare flinch. His tongue licked the spot sending sensuous shivers through her. They said their goodbyes and as they went home, Alexia implored the Gods for mercy. 25

She was furious and desperate. His wife. He couldn’t mean that. It was just a way to get her to surrender to him. Did she really think that she would succumb to such tales? He was darkly handsome, no Adonis though. She fancied that had Mars walked the earth now, he would look like Iairus with his dark, dangerous and menacing eyes and a lithe body that Atlas himself would have envied. He overpowered her senses. She couldn’t give herself to a man who didn’t love her. He spoke of marriage but a man who had forced her to come to him couldn’t possibly have marriage in mind. She was angry with herself for finding him attractive. Now she would have to do something to solve this desperate situation. She railed at the Gods for the mess and made firm plans. **** “Iairus, is there something you should be telling me?” “No, Kharos. I want you to tutor her. I need her here to make Alexia feel relaxed. Just remember Leah is a young, innocent girl and you have to be careful as her tutor. She is impressionable and I don’t want nor need complications.” Kharos laughed. “I’ve never run after children. So, it’s not that you’re warning me about.” “No, of course not” was the laconic response. “She is safe with me. You’re betrothal was rather sudden. Have you the emperor’s permission?”
26

“She has been given to be my mistress or my wife. I thought that since she is high born, it’s best that I settle for marriage. I need a son to inherit my riches.” “You’re lucky. Leah says her sister is bright, caring, and a generous person.” “I’m sure she is.” “She’s beautiful, too. Leah shows the same promise.” “Don’t get too attached. Some day, you may have to crush her.” With this cryptic remark, he strode away till the darkened courtyard reclaimed this son of the night. **** The chariot came to a halt. Leah jumped out and waited for Alexia. “That was such a nice party. I am so happy for you. I can’t believe that you’re to marry Iairus. It will mean I can see more of Kharos.” “Be careful, Leah. You’re too young to be thinking about him. Moreover, he’s going to tutor you so you don’t fall behind in your studies. I guess Iairus actually understands that women too need an education.” “Tutor me! How boring. I though I could have some unexpected holiday. Don’t worry. I won’t make a fool of myself over Kharos. It’s not my fault that he’s good looking!” Alexia sighed. She had no energy for her sister’s silliness. She shuddered at the thought of being betrothed to Iairus. How could she fight her attraction for him? Was she losing her head? In all 27
Katina Abram
honesty, she couldn’t deny her attraction to him. He was so divinely good looking. For the sake of her sanity, she should resist him. She was glad of the plans she had made. When they entered the house, she could see that her parents and brother had left and she felt great relief. She wouldn’t bring disgrace to her family by becoming a mistress. “Oh, Leah, I’ve been meaning to tell you. Our parents and Demos have gone to get the harvest settled. They’d like us to join them. We can go tomorrow.” She hoped to give as little cause as possible for Leah to unwittingly give away any secrets. “How are we going?” “I am going to drive us in our chariot” “Are any of the servants coming with us or have you persuaded father that we can do this on our own?” “Leah, I didn’t persuade father. He doesn’t know that I was going to give the servants time to visit their families and celebrate harvest. But now, that I am betrothed to Iairus, I can’t do headstrong things like before openly. Please don’t make any mention of our plans. I wouldn’t want Iairus’ reputation to suffer for my foolishness.” “Cross my heart,” said Leah with an impish smile. That night Alexia slept little. The hooting of the owl and the restless cries of the captive panthers broke the stillness of the night air. Her 28

dreams were filled with confused images till they ended in a nightmare. She felt Iairus’ body penetrating hers as she struggled and the pain, along with a passion she had never before experienced, had her screaming. She woke herself and found she was sweating and shaking. She looked at the early dawn streaking the sky with its relentless design. She knew that the tired labourers would answer the strident call of the cock as it too seemed disinclined to allow any more precious minutes of slumber.

Chapter Three Iairus stretched in the courtyard. The morning dew on the leaves of the olive trees glistened not unlike Alexia’s tears. Thoughts of her always brought a smile to his face. He had backed her into a corner and she hadn’t been able to protest. Now the little termagant would be his wife. His to keep, his to do with what he wished and he wished plenty. The little dove would tremble and coo in his arms—and suffer a little. Passion inevitably meant pain for her—he wouldn’t have it any other way. He was man enough to feel his blood throbbing in his veins as he thought of the many ways she would be his. She had agreed. Was it too readily? Instincts honed to a ruthless brilliance on countless battlefields came into play. Yes, she had given in far too easily. Something was going on. He shouted to his charioteer and even before he could complete the thought of Alexia’s treachery, his legendary temper made his fine nostrils flare with a terrible rage. If she had tricked him, she’d beg for his mercy and he’d show her none. Clouds of mud followed the chariot wheels as Iairus drove in a reckless madness. His charioteer wisely said nothing. Iairus was sure he would have cut the man to ribbons with his sword if he made 30

any noise. The horses raced, raring at the bit, but he mastered them as he would master Alexia. She would know what it was to play the general. He recalled the face of the man who had once betrayed him. Iairus had made his life a living hell. Death had come as a relief for his victim. His wife and daughters had served him well in bed, before he had handed them to his men. He would do nothing less if Alexia had played him false. He stopped at her house. He rushed into the courtyard. The house seemed strangely empty. He pounded on the door and it was flung open by a dazed Leah. He struggled to hide his rage. “Where are the servants?” Leah seemed frightened by his harsh visage, so he forced a smile. “I will get Alexia.” Alexia came running down to the courtyard. “What has happened, Iairus? Are you well? Iairus calmed down. “It’s nothing, Alexia. I just felt that I wanted to see my betrothed.” “I’m flattered.” “You should be. At this time I’m usually putting my men through their paces. Anyway, where is everyone else?” “Iairus, please don’t be angry. When my parents left for the harvest, I gave the servants time off to go to their families. I know I shouldn’t have, but I wanted them to be happy.” “Why is that my dove?” 31

“When you told me that I was going to be your wife, I felt peace. I was no more going to be your mistress. I couldn’t believe my fortune.” “It’s all right, my love. When will you return from the harvest?” “I’ll be back within three or four days.” “I’m just impatient. I’ll send my charioteer with you. Your parents will never forgive me if I send you and Leah alone.” So saying he took leave of her with a lingering kiss. As her desire rose and she whimpered, and he stroked her back soothingly. He walked towards his chariot as Alexia watched helplessly. She couldn’t be attracted to him. He would crush her spirit. He hadn’t a place in his heart for love. She sighed as she went indoors. **** Later that morning, Alexia told Leah of her plans. She was only too delighted to join in the activities with her youthful trusting nature. They drugged the wine they gave the charioteer and soon he was snoring away. Quickly, they left the city. They had been travelling for nearly a day. They were dressed in concealing clothes which covered them from head to toe. They only stopped to relieve themselves and ate their food on the move. Alexia lived in fear of Iairus’ reprisal. Leah, unencumbered by such fears, took delight in her sister’s company and enjoyed their adventure readily.

When they stumbled into their uncle’s house, they looked like poor urchins than daughters of a prosperous landowner. Her parents were relieved and her mother’s tears fell copiously. “Our dear daughters; how clever you are.” She hugged and kissed them while their father and Demos waited their turn. When the glad reunion was over, Leah turned to Alexia. “Don’t you want to give them the good news? Alexia told them the news of her betrothal. They were surprised and confused. Demos said, “This changes things does it not father?” Her father nodded. “It does so. Alexia, you have to return to your betrothed right away. You cannot do this to the most famous general in the emperor’s army. This will have serious consequences.” “What is going on?” Leah demanded. Her mother answered. “Leah, your sister thought that Iairus wanted to have her as his mistress and she came away here to escape his attentions.” Leah laughed. “That’s silly. He was very clear when he said that he had proposed. Anyone can see that he loves her.” There was a silence. “Get ready, Alexia. I’ll take you. Let’s leave before uncle comes and wonders what on earth is going on. The less he knows the better.” “Good idea, Demos.” Her father sounded pleased with his son. This was the only time he had 33

ever said anything positive to her brother and Alexia knew what she had to do. She would somehow escape Iairus’ clutches later. She would find a way to keep her heart from being broken. “Yes, let’s go back.” “I am coming, too. I want to be with you. Why should you have all the fun? Anyway, with Kharos helping me with my lessons, it’s not really as if I’m going to lose anything by coming back with you, am I?” Leah asked. Despite Alexia’s protests, her parents gave her permission. “Please tell Iairus we intend to stay here. We’ll spend time with your uncle and take the rest we have planned for a long time.” Alexia didn’t have the heart to say that she’d rather die than be attached to Iairus just because he wanted her. She loathed war and she loathed the cruelty of it. She would not marry a decorated general whose hands were stained with blood just because he was ruled by lust. She would settle for nothing less than Cupid’s golden arrow. She would ignore the sometimes mixed feelings that he incited in her. It couldn’t be attraction. He was just another handsome man. By all the gods, other handsome men had smiled at her and flirted with her. She had been able to ignore them easily. She enjoyed the independence her father encouraged and wished to be no man’s chattel. She’d explain to Iairus that a union between them wouldn’t work. If he didn’t listen, then she’d 34

have no choice but to give herself to her childhood friend in the emperor’s court. He was sweet and gentle and wouldn’t hurt her. Iairus wouldn’t want a woman without her honour for his wife. **** “Wake up. The Gods curse you. What happened here?” Iairus’ rage-filled voice broke through the mists of wine-induced stupor. The charioteer looked at him with bleary eyes. When he had given Iairus the sorry tale, he was sent away to rest. Iairus’ fiery eyes would have given Hera pause. Even the Fates winced as they saw the drama of Alexia’s life unfold. Much would she learn and the refining fire of pain would mould her. Alexia had played him and he would play her. He felt such a rage as he hadn’t experienced before He would teach her what it was to be the property of a man and his captive. She would pleasure him even if it killed her. She would learn the meaning of humiliation and pain. Iairus left for his palace. He cold bloodedly had his bedchamber and quarters set up to carry out his plans to tame the treacherous cat. No one could escape this stronghold and neither could any sound escape. She could leave the bedchamber and walk the passage outside but otherwise she was a prisoner. He would make sure that Leah was kept in his house. He would demand a virgin sacrifice of the eldest sister. He wouldn’t be willing to compromise. Kharos would have to be told the real 35

reason for Leah’s presence. Alexia would learn her lesson well—no one crossed the general and smiled afterwards. No one had escaped unscathed. **** Blissfully unaware of her fate, Alexia made the journey back. It was hard to pretend that she was happy and her brother and sister’s happiness only made her feel guilty. Bone weary and disheartened, she spent the journey worrying over how to convince Iairus to let her go. Finally, they reached home. They retired to their beds completely worn out. Alexia stretched her aching body. She was so tired. She heard movement in the ante-chamber. She woke and was surprised to see her bath ready. She disrobed herself and lowered her aching body into the bath. The rose petals in the water calmed her nerves and hot water soothed her aching muscles. She took a sip of the wine placed so conveniently. She must thank Leah for her kindness. Soon, she felt Morpheus beckoning and gave in, hazily aware that sleeping in the bath wasn’t a good idea. In the dark of night, Alexia did not wake when Demos was hauled away from his bed. She didn’t even stir when Leah was carried away by Kharos who had convinced her all was well. He told her that a surprise was being planned for Alexia. She did not know that the falcon had swooped to catch the dove unawares. She did not know when angry, cruel hands lifted her roughly out of 36

the bath. She did not know when she was dressed and carried to a chariot. She didn’t feel the chariot’s movements or when it came to a halt. She didn’t know that the panther in her dreams would stalk her living nightmares.

Chapter Four Iairus walked the grounds of his summer residence. It was called the Palace of the Pomegranates. Many a pomegranate had been cut open here to reveal its bleeding centre to taunt, seduce and overcome women. How many women had enjoyed or suffered his embrace—it was a question of whether he was making love or making hate. He recalled his conversation with Kharos. Kharos had been very reluctant to place Leah as a slave. He had only agreed when Iairus threatened to give her to his soldiers. He had been told to send her away only after Iairus had consummated his union with Alexia. Iairus knew that Leah was a gentle maiden and not fit to be a slave at all but he didn’t care. His soul, consumed by his thirst for revenge, had little inclination towards compassion. Iairus told his soldiers to prepare Demos for the panther arena. He knew the scholarly young man wouldn’t survive long. He couldn’t show mercy. If the Gods were merciful, Demos may survive. Alexia would have the honour of sitting beside him and dropping the silk square to start the contest. Her spirit would be broken and tamed. She would sell her soul to the devil to escape the punishments he planned for her. To escape them, 38

she would gladly sacrifice even Leah. Such was the pain he planned for treacherous, conniving Alexia. He walked towards his house. In the midday sun, it shimmered beautifully. He tossed his head back and breathed in the dry heat. He clenched his teeth as his rage and anger at Alexia’s betrayal kept growing. He fed it and when he opened his bedchamber, he was ready to commit murder. He saw the maid outside her chambers look at him and her hands were shaking. Her lips moved;, surely she was praying for Alexia. He walked into the chamber. She was stirring. He watched as she opened her eyes and tried to get her bearings. She stretched and he felt his desire rise. She turned and saw him and froze. Her eyes were pleading as she lifted her hands towards him. “What am I doing here?” “You don’t know?” Something in his eyes and tone must have alerted her that all was not well. “What has happened? You look unhappy, Iairus.” “You dare to say I look unhappy?” He strode across the room and pulled her up. When she tried to cover herself, he pushed the bedclothes away. Naked and shaking, she stood before him. He looked at her coolly, and raised his hand. She moved back in terror. “Afraid I am going to hit you? You don’t have to worry. I have ways of hurting you that involve no hitting. I was just getting something from the bed canopy.” He brought down a cat o’nine tails and 39

ran it against her cheeks. She stared at him wideeyed. Her trembling lips and sad face pushed the boundaries of his temper. “You are a cunning vixen. Thought you’d make a fool of me? I’d have made you my wife but now you’ll be my mistress and by all the gods in Olympus, you’ll learn the difference.” He swung the whip and wrapped it around her waist dragging her towards him. She winced, trying to resist. The whip tightened naked flesh, while he relentlessly applied pressure. He saw that angry welts were beginning to appear. Abruptly, he let her go before he drew any blood. He thrust her down on the bed. Before, she could react, he lay down beside her. “Listen to my story. I have two amusements planned for you. First, there is this young scholar.” He heard her breath catch. “He will face the panthers tomorrow. We will be the chief guests. Here is the silk handkerchief you will flutter.” She paled when she recognized the material. “It’s from Leah’s gown. What did you do with her? Why are you doing this to us? I was coming back to you.” “Don’t lie to me.” “I’m not. Iairus, please listen to me”. “You can beg all you want. I shall not heed it, neither will Kharos.” “What do you mean?” The words came out in a whisper. “I’ve asked him to find a household for Leah. She will serve as a slave.” 40
The General’s Maiden
Alexia looked at him. “You can’t be such a monster. I’m willing to marry you. Let my family go. My parents will be devastated. What have they ever done to you?” “I don’t want to marry you. What I want is an untried mistress who I’ll mould in my bed as takes my fancy. Prepare yourself. Once Demos finishes his appearance in the arena, I will take you and Kharos will take Leah to a household on the other side of town. He will choose a good family, so there’s no fear of cruelty.” She lay frozen and didn’t even feel his rude caresses or the way his fingers ran across her lips, while one hand squeezed her breast. He threw one leg over her and all hell broke lose. She reared up and bit him hard on his thigh. He pushed one hand into her hair and pulled cruelly. She was forced to let go. He caught her hands in both his and forced her hands behind her head and put pressure on her elbows till her body formed an arc on the bed. He caught her under her knees and held her down while glaring at her. He forced her body to arch even more as he placed a cushion under the small of her back. “Now, let’s see. What can I do with you?” Alexia moaned in distress. “I think we need to help you.” He spread her thighs and she flinched. He stopped with one eyebrow raised. “Feeling more pain on your shoulder? You are supposed to. You’re back should be killing you, as well. After all, you are in the presence of the 41

general who knows how to break the enemy. Many have begged for death before I finished them.” He bent his head to her thighs, and licked a path up until with no warning, his teeth made light contact with her skin. Her shriek of shock made him laugh. “You bit me, you wild cat. I’m just returning the favour.” He let her go and she breathed deeply as she found a comfortable position. He lay down beside her, his hand cupping a breast and he dropped off to sleep. **** She made no sound. She needed to relieve herself but she didn’t dare wake Iairus, who might well continue with his seduction. Sweat began to bead her face and soon it was running down her face. She winced at the discomfort. He woke up. She could see how alert he was immediately. “I need to relieve myself,” she croaked. Without a word, he hauled her up ignoring her groan of agony. He walked her over to the corner. She fought down her humiliation and fear and used the chamber pot. She looked at him, feeling humiliatingly helpless. Her mute plea must have been etched on her face. He turned abruptly and to her relief walked away. She took time to wash herself and her stomach began growling. She ignored her body’s demands and went back to the bed. He lay looking up at the canopy. “I want to see Leah.” 42
The General’s Maiden
He shook his head. “I’ll not disturb Kharos when he is preparing Leah.” She looked at him. She knew her with eyes were filled with rage. “I just need to see her.” “What’ll I get in return?” “I won’t kill you.” He laughed. “I see you still have your spirit but it won’t last long. In about five hours, the sun will go down. Your sister, like you, has but less than a day to bid farewell to her world.” “Bring her here. She’ll tell you what really happened.” He shook his head. “I don’t make the same mistake twice.” “I need to see her. In fact, I demand to see her.” He walked towards her angrily.“You demand? I say you take orders and do as you are told—in and out of bed.” “You don’t understand, Iairus. You’re making a big mistake. “The only mistake I made was to trust your treacherous self. Nothing will convince me to ever believe you again. You’re here to suffer and satisfy me. Lie down now and sleep—you need your rest and I need no more temptation.” She quickly lay down and when Iairus moved toward her, she flinched and couldn’t prevent her lips from quivering pitifully. 43

“I want to see Leah. I beg you, please. Let me at least tell her myself. She will be so frightened. She is but a child.” “She is no child. Your father has certainly spoiled you. Young women your age have already had children.” “Please Iairus, she is so young. She trusts Kharos and likes him—how will she cope?” “She will cope the way you will—by obeying when commanded and hoping that compliance will save her any problems.” “I’ll do anything to prevent her suffering. You refuse to believe me when I say I was returning to you. Could you not just punish me and spare Demos and Leah?” He smiled cruelly. “Where’s the fun in that?” She couldn’t help the hot tears that ran down her face and fell on his hands. He moved away abruptly. “Go to sleep. If you keep talking, I won’t wait to claim you.” So saying, he left the chamber. Alexia waited with bated breath. After a while, when she realised that he had truly left, she moved slowly to the door. She tried it and thanked the gods that it was open. Carefully and slowly she pushed it open. She moved quickly down the passage to Kharos’ quarters. When she stood outside his chamber, she listened, she could hear nothing. She knocked carefully. Soon the door opened. Kharos stood there looking solemn. He motioned Alexia into the chamber. She went in and her eyes immediately 44

fell on the lump in his bed. She looked at him pleadingly and questioningly. “It is Leah,” he said. Alexia fell to her knees by the bed weeping uncontrollably. A hand touched her shoulder, and she looked up. Kharos held a finger to his lips and put out his hand which Alexia took. He led her away to the side. “I haven’t yet found a family. I give you my word she will be safe when I do. I have good friends who will look after Leah.” Alexia was pale with fear and rage. “Why is she in your room?” Kharos flushed. “She was so scared when I told her that I had no other way of helping her. I told her she could stay here until it was time to leave.” Alexia moaned in anguish. “My poor baby sister.” “Please stop this. I’m doing what I can for someone whom I do care about. Do you know how hard this is? I’m breaking her trust in me in a terrible way. She doesn’t even know anything about what slaves are expected to do. That’s why...” The loud noise with which the door was flung them stopped them in uneasy silence. Before either of them could react, Iairus walked in. He moved towards Alexia with such a ferocious expression on his face that she began backing off and was stopped by the edge of the bed. Her knees give way and she sat on the bed with a thud. 45

“Iairus, please listen…” He grabbed her by her upper arm and when she resisted, his hand snaked around her neck and he bent his face to hers. “You come with me now. Otherwise, you’ll curse the Gods that our paths crossed.” While she looked at him her face pale and her lips trembling, his control broke. He dragged her to the door and turned back to Kharos. Alexia began struggling. “Ignore her. This wildcat needs her lessons.” Kharos did not respond. He gestured towards the bed. “I’ve told Leah. I asked Alexia here so that she could comfort her sister.” Iairus looked at Alexia. “I need to make you mine soon. I won’t wait anymore, little dove. The falcon is truly in the mood to hunt his prey.” As he moved away, he turned and said, “I’ll send the guard in to transport Leah to the household you’ve chosen.” Alexia froze in his arms. “That won’t be necessary, Iairus. I’m afraid I haven’t made the final choice but I will do it. I don’t want Leah to hate me more than she does now.” “That’s the way, is it? Well, be quick about it. Alexia flushed. She looked at Kharos and her eyes said her thanks for his kindness. Her fate was going to be another matter. 46
The General’s Maiden
Chapter Five Iairus pushed Alexia into his bedchamber and towards the bed. He felt her fear and it fed his lust. He could sense her grief for her sister and he didn’t want to feel for her. Kharos could be trusted. Of course, he was a charmer and would convince Leah one way or another to accept her fate. He had certainly inherited his charm from his father. Iairus’ mouth twisted when he thought of his uncle. His abundant charm and popularity had finally finished him off. Cuckolded husbands had notoriously good aim. He removed his clothes and Alexia watched him with eyes that were huge and wet with tears. She was shaking and began to speak. He saw her swallow several times and then he barked, “What is it?” “I want you to believe me when I say I was coming back to you. I want you to release my brother. Demos has never found favour with my father until now. He did so because he felt that as your betrothed, my place was with you. He convinced me to return to you. Please spare him. I’ll be what you want.” “You’re certainly singing a different tune. You’ll be what I want. Now, that is an offer I can’t refuse. Strip off your clothes right now.” 47
Katina Abram
She slowly did as she was bid. Kneeling on the bed, she didn’t look that much older than Leah. When she awkwardly finished taking her clothes off, he walked towards her. He saw her freeze and she looked like a dove his pet falcon brought down just before he twisted its neck. She was truly in his power and it felt good. Before he could stop himself, he said, “Your brother will be released but you and Leah will stay here as long as I command. Any nonsense from you and Leah will be handed to over as a slave.” He saw her shudder. “Do you have any questions?” She shook her head. “Turn around with your back to me.” She did so, tight-lipped. The mattress dipped as he knelt beside her on the bed. He reached for something and she froze. He placed the item around her ankle. She turned to look at what it was. It was a delicate, beautiful gold slave anklet. She turned red and looked away. He forced her head around and rubbed her lips roughly with his thumb. “My slave,” he whispered. He pushed her further down on the bed and lay on top of her, resting most of his weight on one hand. He ran his fingers through her hair. She was breathing rapidly and her muscles tensed under his weight. He blew gently against the nape of her neck and saw the goose pimples that came up. He suckled on her ear, and she moaned in denial. 48
The General’s Maiden
He laughed as his tongue mercilessly swiped the shell of her ear. She protested and he raised her torso to get his fingers on her luscious breasts. He found a nipple and played with it gently but firmly. She yelped and he laughed. She struggled to make him let her turn but he wasn’t finished. He licked her nipple but suddenly she bit his arm hard and wouldn’t let go. He swore and tried to free his arm but she bit tightly into his flesh. His eyes watered with the pain. He used his free hand to feel between her legs and with devastating aim, inserted his finger surely into her and she let go. She fought him crazily then. He needed both his hands to subdue her. With some difficulty he turned her on her back and placed his body closely on her and began to push her into the bed. She wasn’t able to breathe for his weight. Her eyes grew wide as his body on hers had her struggling to breathe. He knew what would come next. Even strong men couldn’t hold out with this kind of treatment as the ribs could crack and pierce the lung. He was careful not to cause more than pressure—he just wanted to frighten her. He got off when he sensed that she wouldn’t offer any further resistance. He got up and washed his arm where she had bitten it. The vixen had drawn blood. Wiping his hands, he came back to her. He caught her hands in one of his and jerked her arms up. Dragging her along, he opened an antechamber and pushed her in. “Since you behave like an 49

animal, I’ll treat you like one.” He went out and shut the door. The room was bare and had but a mattress on the floor. **** Alexia wept bitterly. She wanted her parents. She wanted to laugh with Leah and Demos. She wanted to drive the chariot. She wanted to eat. It was more than twelve hours since she had eaten or drunk anything. In the traumatic hours that had passed, she hadn’t really noticed her hunger. Now the sense of fear and desolation sharpened the edge of hunger and thirst. No matter how much she was attracted to Iairus her situation was weighing heavily on her. She began to pace and worry. Would Demos have gone now? Would Leah be awake? Would Kharos be able to help her understand that Alexia’s foolishness had cost Leah her happiness? When had her life come to this sorry state? She sat down wearily. It was hard for her to be what Iairus wanted. Could he not see how terrified she was of sharing her body with a man who had promised her pain? Even if the pain, portions of it, caused the stirring of passion? The hours passed slowly. The small opening high in the corner told her she must be have been here for quite a while. Her lips were dry and she felt dizzy. When she stood up, she felt a sharp pain in her lower body. She struggled to stand but her body wouldn’t let her. She collapsed face down on the floor. 50
The General’s Maiden
**** Iairus watched the fight impassively. The man had no chance against the maddened panther but he wouldn’t surrender. In a final frenzy, the panther finished him and with an angry flick of the tail sauntered off from the arena. Its keeper watched it warily until it entered its cage. He stood up and stretched. Demos had been freed and Iairus was not sorry. He still had a trump in Leah. He drove home in his chariot. He asked for dinner to be sent to his bedchamber and went over to Kharos’ chambers. On being asked to come in, he walked in and was surprised to see Kharos on his own. Iairus turned to Kharos, “Where is Leah?” “She’s gone to the dovecote to feed the doves.” “Have you told her?” Kharos shook his head. “I am waiting for the messenger from the Theonides’ household.” Iairus smiled. “Have you eaten?” “Yes, Leah and I had a meal several hours ago. She was very hungry, as they hadn’t eaten since she was brought here. When she gets back, we are going out into the courtyard. “Where’s Alexia? I’m sure she must be starving too.” “She’s in the chambers. I don’t think she’d be starving. I ordered that she be sent meals. I’ll join her now. Keep Leah away with some story or another. I don’t want the sisters to meet till I’ve accomplished what I need to.” 51

Iairus left him and walked into his the bed chamber. Where was Alexia? He suddenly remembered that he had locked the antechamber. Alexia must be furious. He smiled. She must be hungry too as the maid wouldn’t have known she was in the antechamber. Cursing his stupidity, Iairus opened the door. When he walked in and looked around, he saw her lying still on the floor. Concerned, he dropped on his knees and gently turned her towards him. She was unconscious. He carried her to his chamber and placed her on the bed. He called for the maids and soon they were there with water and food. When they left, he tried to wake her up. He placed his lips close to hers and saw how dry her lips were. He wet a cloth and placed it on her lips and realized that she was burning up. He called for the apothecary who ministered to her until she began stirring. She looked pale and despite the apothecary assuring him that she was just tired and needed water and food, he felt worried. He kept forcing water down her throat and soon her restless, fast breaths were slowing down. She slowly came to and asked for Leah. When she looked around and saw where she was, her lips began trembling. Iairus ignored her apprehension and asked her to sit up. He gave her some disgusting concoction the apothecary had asked the maids to make of flour and milk and told her to eat it. “Where is Leah?” 52
The General’s Maiden
Iairus looked at her for a long time. “Leah and Kharos are in the courtyard playing some silly game or another.” “I want to see her.” “Well, you can’t. You’re tired and I don’t want her upset.” Leah’s lips tightened. “Well, too bad if she is going to be upset. I’m going to see her now.” “Calm down. I said they’ve gone out. When they get back, if you’ve satisfied me, then you can see her. Leah looked at him. “You can’t possibly expect me to be able to please you now. I am tired as you yourself just said. I can’t do anything.” Iairus was irritated. “You don’t have to do much. I’ll do all the work. So what if you are tired? You aren’t my betrothed and mistresses don’t deserve compassion. I am hungry for you. You’d better serve me now. If it was possible, Alexia grew even paler. “Please don’t taunt me. I don’t feel like myself at all.” I have arranged a bath for you. When the maids leave, you’ll be ready for me.” **** He left the chamber and soon the maids came in. They brought the bath tub and proceeded to bathe her thoroughly. When they told her that they were going to pluck her hair down there, Alexia protested. Much as they tried to explain that their master would have their heads, Alexia refused. They finally left her in peace. 53

Alexia ate more of the food and drank a bit of pomegranate juice. Suddenly, Iairus walked in. He shut the door behind him and locked it. Alexia knew in her heart that the time had come. Her heart beat fast and she promised herself that she would let him have his way. She didn’t want to suffer more pain than was rumoured to haunt virgins. Iairus walked up to her and pulled her into his arms. He kissed her roughly on her lips. He could feel the thudding of her heart. He felt his heartbeat racing knowing that he was soon going to conquer her. He removed her robe, and carried her to bed. She lay there pale and passive. He almost wished that he could see some fight in her. “I’m going to take you quickly the first time, it is best. It will hurt but soon you will get used to it.” Alexia did not answer. Her eyes almost filled her whole face. His dove lay within his grasp and he felt triumphant. He lowered himself by her side and kissed her down one side and moved to one pale nipple. He had seen pomegranates that had fallen too soon from the tree have this pale pinkness. He suckled on her nipple and felt her body arch, unsure whether it was in protest or arousal. He gently released her nipple and sucked on her lips gently. He tasted her tears and stopped. He watched her from beneath his eyelashes and she looked terrified. Fear brought out the hunter in him and he began to knead her breast while one 54

hand travelled lower down. When he felt the hair he stopped. “I told them to clean you.” “I wouldn’t let them.” He laughed. “Of course not. I’m glad that you still have your spirit. Open your legs.” She did so reluctantly and he bent his head and began to lick her. All her passivity flew and she pushed him off cursing. He laughed as she tried to escape him and his smile set her teeth on edge. “Your brother is in the palace libraries. He is still within distance of the arena and I could always rescind my orders.” She froze. “Finish it off. I want to go home,” she wailed. “You my dove are going nowhere till I’m ready to let you go.” He turned his attention back to her body. He kissed her passionately and sucked her nipples till he could feel her tension turn to compliance. It didn’t matter to him that she was overwhelmed. He feasted on her like a starved man and then finally, he could take no more. He threw off his robe and felt her draw a shaky breath. He was so big that she shuddered. She was the daughter of a wealthy landowner and here she was like a whore in a general’s arms. She tried not to panic as she felt his thighs glide between hers and push hers apart. She was stretched uncomfortably. He placed his hands on the side of her hips and angled her pelvis towards him. Now he was fully 55

erect and his penis was nothing like that she had seen on statues in a courtyard. He would win any competition hands down. Exhausted, she tried to push him away. Her sheer resignation made him stop. There was no joy in this. He couldn’t force her. He moved away and pulled the bedclothes over them. When he drew her into his arms, he felt her resistance. “I’ll give you time. No doubt I’ve lost my head to be giving you respite.” Alexia finally drifted off in his arms. The combination of nerves and fatigue proved to be a powerful sleeping draught.

Chapter Six Alexia stirred. She felt strong arms push her flat on her back. She saw Iairus bend over her. He bit her nipple hard. She reacted by arching her body into his and she felt him enter her deep and tear her hymen. The white hot flash of agony that reverberated through her body made her scream till her ears were deafened. She felt herself being shaken. “Wake up, Alexia. You’ll have your sister and Kharos in with this noise.” She woke up wide-eyed and pale. Tears were streaming down her face. She saw Iairus’ face above her own. “That must have been some nightmare. Did Hades decide to haunt your dreams?” She shook her head. “What is it then? Spiders? Virgin fears?” She flushed and he threw back his head laughing. “Come, let’s go out into the courtyard. You can watch me with my pride and joy—my falcon.” A very relieved Alexia followed him out. The dusk had brought the cicadas into chorus and doves were cooing noisily as they settled for the night to come. The courtyard was filled with the enticing perfume of the Night Queen. Its sweet, musky smell teased their nostrils. Iairus’ servant brought 57

the falcon. Hooded, the bird’s alert movements surprised Alexia. “Would you like to hold him?” “Oh, yes.” So saying Alexia reached for the bird. The bird was transferred to her wrist and she watched it in amazement. “He’s so beautiful.” “Beautiful, powerful and deadly,” whispered Iairus. He removed the hood and the eyes that looked at Alexia made her catch her breath. “What is it?” She shook her head. “It’s his eyes.” “They help him spot his prey.” Gently taking the bird from her wrist, he sent it off into the darkening sky. The pink flush of dusk coloured the sky. Against it, the falcon was silhouetted in all its predatory splendour. The shards of golden rays of the setting sun reflected off its wings as it hurtled towards a straggler. Iairus whistled sharply and the falcon swooped tumbling down with its prey. Alexia winced as she saw the dove in its grasp. “It’s a young one. It’s paying the price for foolishly lagging behind.” “Please let it go, Iairus. Its parents will be waiting for it.” He turned towards her. For speechless seconds he studied her and she felt like the trembling dove in his hands. He let the dove escape. It flew away into the dusk and Alexia could breathe easy. When she could see it no more, she sighed. 58

As the fingers of the night spread towards them in the courtyard, Iairus gently pulled Alexia towards him and urged her into the house. “My dove,” he whispered and hugged her lightly to his side. Alexia’s heart beat fast. She didn’t want to continue where they had left off. She looked at him with mute entreaty when they walked into his chamber. “Would you like to spend some time with Leah? I have some work to do. I’ll see you in the morning. If you want to have Leah in here with you, just let Kharos know.” He walked away leaving a completely perplexed Alexis. Where had this compassion in Iairus come from? She wasted no time and went to Kharos’ chambers. When he opened the door, his eyes asked the question he couldn’t utter. Alexia blushed and shook her head. Wordlessly, he urged her in and Leah sat on the floor playing some game and stuffing herself with figs dripping with honey. When she saw Alexia, she rushed up to her and threw her arms around her big sister. “Oh, I’m so happy to see you. I behaved very badly when Kharos said that I’ve got to go back home. He had to calm me down.” Hugging her back fiercely, Alexia said, “It is just a sign that you’re spoiled. It is kind of Kharos to take such good care of you.” She turned to Kharos, unable to hide her relief that he hadn’t told Leah the truth. “Thank you.” 59

“No need to thank me. You look tired, Alexia. Why don’t you lie down?” She nodded wearily and lay down. Before she could even get her mind around the recent tumultuous hours, she slipped into a deep sleep. She did not even stir when Leah crept into the bed beside her. The sisters soon slept secure in Morpheus’ kingdom. **** Kharos sat patiently waited for the sisters to wake up. He knew that he would have to confess to Iairus and wasn’t in any hurry to leave his bed chamber. Even as he sat ruminating, firm footsteps outside his door told him that the moment had arrived. The door opened and Iairus walked in. He motioned to Kharos to remain seated and went over to the bed. He smiled wryly at the sight of the sisters fast asleep, with Leah holding tightly onto Alexia. When he turned, his eyes were unfathomable. “I’ll meet you later. Ask for the chariot to be ready. We have somewhere we have to go.” Kharos merely nodded.

Chapter Seven When morning knocked on her eyelids, Alexia stretched and quickly sat up. She was still in Kharos’ chamber and Leah was holding her tightly. She soothed her sister’s forehead and smiled. Suddenly, she felt prickles down her spine. Something made her look behind her. A smiling Iairus sat there. She flushed. “We were both tired,” she mumbled. “Why were you tired?” he teased. Alexia couldn’t understand this change of mood in him. “Where were you?” “Keeping away from temptation.” “You’re impossible!” “Ah, but considerate. Are you ready now? “For what?” Alexia’s heart pounded. She wanted so desperately to be his without misunderstanding. “To go out. I’ve something which will make you happy. You’ll be relieved to know that Kharos and I’ve been having a long chat. I’ve learned quite a few details, my dove.” Alexia froze. She was in no mood for a cat and mouse game. “What did you find out?” “Several things. I know that Leah is going nowhere.” Shock kept her silent. 61

“I know that you are a dedicated and dutiful daughter. I heard that your father’s charioteer has great faith in your driving abilities. Your sister thinks that Aurora spreads her cloak over the dawning sky just for you. Your father tells me that your accounts have kept him wealthy these years. Do you want me to continue?” She stared at him open-mouthed. “He didn’t tell me of your fly-catching abilities though.” She shut her mouth with an audible snap and he roared with laughter. “Come here, my dove. Let me hold you.” Alexia breathed deeply as she got out of bed. As they were leaving, Kharos entered. “We’re just going out to my chamber to get ready. Wake Leah and get ready.” Yes,Iairus. We shall meet you in the courtyard later. He smiled at Alexia and they went to his chamber. Alexia turned to Iairus with a look of wonder in her eyes. He said nothing as he plundered her soft lips with the marauding grace of a conqueror. “I’ve a surprise for you. We’re getting married. Your parents are here. I now know that you were indeed returning to me.” She flung her arms around him. He gently disengaged her arms and pushed her ahead of him into the chamber. The sight that greeted her eyes would remain in her memory for a lifetime. Her 62

parents and Demos were waiting for them. After exchanging many hugs, kisses and tears, she turned to Iairus. “Thank you.” “Thank your father. Had it not been for his decision to return and seek me out with the truth, I’d have indeed made a horrible mistake.” They exchanged vows as was customary before the altar of Venus. The garland of flowers filled her senses as after the festivities they retired to their chamber. “Leah is so happy that Kharos is willing to tutor her. She thinks that she has feelings for him.” “Kharos would enjoy that. He’s not a fool. I’m sure in time he knows he won’t be able to resist the woman Leah will become. As her tutor, he will be able to keep competition away.” “No, he’s not. Well, we’ll see how that works out.” “I don’t intend talking my wedding night away. The falcon can only wait so long.” She blushed and trembled in his embrace. He placed his chin on her head. “You’re frightened.” “Yes,” she whispered. “What are you frightened of?” “Feeling this happiness. One moment I was in deep despair and in danger of being ravished. In the next moment, I’m a wife anticipating my wedding night.” “You certainly deserve to be happy. I’m afraid the ravishing is going to happen. I saw you talking 63

to your mother and both of you were flushed. I hope you learned something!” She hit his chest with her small fist. He laughed delightedly. Then his face turned serious. “I’ve never loved anyone. You’ll have to give me time. Now love making, I can guarantee, is an area that I excel in.” When she flushed, he drew her into his arms. “I need you to trust me. You’re going to be mine. I’ll do everything to make this a wonderful introduction to becoming a wife.” “I trust you,” she whispered shyly. “Even if it hurts?” “Even then.” He hugged her and slowly divested her of her garments. “My beautiful bride”. He wooed her gently. She opened her arms to him and he gently placed one of his thighs between hers. She heard him say, “Brace yourself.” In the next moment, she felt him sliding in. He stopped. “Try not to resist. I need you and you’ll be mine, but there doesn’t have to be unnecessary discomfort. Unless you want it…” Her whole body was straining away from him with nowhere to go. He raised her even more. “My dove, you’re rather small. I hadn’t expected you to be so tight. I’m afraid this means I’ll get more pleasure than I hoped for and you, more pain.” His words gave no comfort. He pushed now with slightly more force and his penis entered her making her flesh burn and she twisted in anguish. 64

“Please, stop. I don’t want this.” He stopped immediately and kissed her lightly. “I suggest that we try again tomorrow.” She shook her head vehemently, “No, I want it over and done with.” He laughed. “That’s enough for any man’s ego to take a blow.” He withdrew from her and reached under the pillow and brought out some cream. He rubbed it on his finger and on her vagina and inside, too. “Okay, let’s try again.” She begged him. “Please don’t stop. I’m scared, but don’t stop.” “It’s natural to be scared. Don’t worry. I have to hurt you now but I promise you only pleasure later.” Even as he spoke, he began sliding slowly and surely into her passage. She felt every single point of contact and the pain he promised had her in its coils. Tears rolled down her cheeks. He stopped and looked deeply into her eyes. “Don’t weep, my dove. I’m being as gentle as I can and patient.” “I know,” she whispered her breath catching in her anxiety. He kissed her hard and thrust his tongue into her mouth. “Suck my tongue,” he ordered and she helplessly did so. His tongue mastered hers and sucked on hers, while his fingers flicked a nipple. He moved over her and again lifted her up into the 65

cradle of his thighs. She stiffened as felt him deeper inside. He withdrew. “It’s okay. Rest now. We’ll try again later.” He refused to continue despite her renewed attempts to convince him. “I think I shouldn’t have let your mother speak to you before the wedding night,” he said wryly. She reddened and confessed, “I’ve a very low pain threshold. Even Leah teases me about that.” He laughed at that and began tickling her. Even as they rolled around in abandon, he captured her mouth to stop any sounds from her. He pushed into her relentlessly, easily subduing her young body with his great strength, not wanting to prolong her fear and pain. He lifted her legs higher and she tried not to fight him, her body shuddering at the depth he continued to carve inside her. Tears mingled with sweat and trickled into his mouth. He gently licked them up and in his eyes she read his question. “Don’t stop.” “I am going to thrust three more times. I don’t think you can take any more.” He followed these words with a deep thrust. She felt torn in two, her hymen now sacrificed to her love. He thrust again at a different angle. She winced, and felt her passage rasp against his intrusion.

“You are already dry. I am going to stop now. I don’t want to tear you. I need you to share pleasure with me, my dove.” He withdrew and she felt the sharp pinch as he left her body. He moved away from her and returned with a warm cloth. He gently soothed her while he cleaned and praised her. He smiled victoriously and her heart jumped in response. He left the bed and washed himself. He carried her to the bath that had been set up in the antechamber and bathed her. She couldn’t say a word. He carried her back to the bed and placed her on it after stripping the top layer off. “Go to sleep,” he said as he lay beside her and drew her into his arms. He lifted one of her legs gently over his. When she winced, he stroked her thigh gently. Soon she felt her eyes drooping. Tiny shudders vibrated through her body. She slept. He knew what it had cost her to take his big manhood into her young, lithe body. Even now he could feel the vibrations her body made as she slept beside him. He couldn’t understand his patience with her. If this was love, he was certainly entering an unfamiliar arena. He caressed her as she slept. His dove. The hawk had certainly brought down his prey. Only, it seemed the dove had tamed the hawk. He woke up after a few hours and his body signaled his need for her. She was still sleeping. He covered himself with cream and rolled over carefully on top of her. He slipped in even before she could wake up. He set a gentle rhythm and 67

soon her body responded. He felt waves of pleasure and he licked her lips until she awoke. “I am inside you, claiming you,” he whispered. She watched him and he soon felt her muscles clutching him. He rode her harder now, his gasps of pleasure filling the bedchamber. He withdrew and turned her face-down. When she looked at him, he smiled reassuringly. He placed one hand on her hip and with the other braced himself on the bed. He inserted himself into her and felt how deep he was going. Soon, the pleasure caught up with him and she was pushed into the bed, while he thrust into her in a frenzy of passion. Her body responded, getting wet, and she moaned in pleasure. His libido quickened as he continued to stroke into her and he felt her shudder beneath him helplessly. He felt her muscles milking him and he pulled out of her and turned her to face him. He entered her again and her tightness was bliss. He looked into her eyes full of pleasure and wonder. He gloried in his mastery over her. He took her, thrusting until she lay fully open to him. “My little dove,” he said. He fell on her as their combined orgasm streamed through him as he filled her with his life-giving fluid. She lay still. “Thank you,” he said. “I really enjoyed claiming you.” She didn’t answer but her face reddened and her mouth quivered. He rubbed his finger over her lips. They were soft to the touch. 68

He licked her lower lip and slowly inserted his tongue into her mouth and tentatively her tongue licked his. His whole body shuddered in reaction and he quickly withdrew from her. She needed to recover from his passionate love making. “Shall we eat?” “I’m hungry, but I’d like to see my parents and Leah first.” He sighed. “Have a wash and then go see them. I guess you need your family and I need to learn to accept that.” Alexia’s stillness attracted his attention. “What is it?” She shook her head. “Nothing,” she said and got off the bed wincing as her sensitive body reminded her of what it had been experiencing. “Tell me.” “I love you. I hope I don’t have to wait long to hear you say that with all your heart.” “I’m well on my way, my dove.” She hugged him and they left the chamber together. A little later he heard Alexia’s voice. “No Leah, I’m not giving any details. No, don’t ask mother just yet. No, I won’t tell you. Wait for the time when you’re married and your husband will teach you.” Women’s talk. Iairus shook his head as he walked towards Demos and his father-in-law. Kharos joined them, as they began discussing the finer points of horseflesh. Iairus decided that he would ask the 69

emperor to give Demos a place in the palace archives. The young man would be a dedicated and happy scholar there. Iairus excused himself as he spotted Alexia looking out into the courtyard. He reached her in a few steps and slid his arm around her waist. They walked out into the courtyard. “Happy, my dove?” “Very much so.” The rosy hue of dusk settled like a barmy blanket over the rapidly approaching night sky. Somewhere in the distance, the cry of a hunting falcon sounded sharply through the air. Iairus sighed. He hugged her close. He needed to hunt no more. His dove was in his safekeeping. She had captured and tamed her falcon.
