Schutztruppe for East Africa 6. Schutztruppe for Cameroon and Togo 7. Grade and Rank distinctions 8. Grade and Rank distinctions for non commissioned officers Notes on the Schutztruppe: The German Schutztruppen were raised in 1889 and the units served as such until the outbreak of the war in 1914. There were many variations on the uniforms worn as a concession for the climate served in. The traditional “Sand Gray” uniform was supplemented with a yellow kahki uniform and white drill uniform. The unique slouch hat was often replaced with the field cap (mütze) or white covered cork helmet. The total unit was very small and when orginally organized consisted of: Officers Medical Officers (Aerzte) Paymasters(Zahlmeister) Veterinary Surgeons ( Rossarzt) Paymaster Candidates (Zahlmeister Aspirant) Artificers (Feurwerker) Armourers (Buchenmeister) Master Sergeants (Feldwebel) Sergeants Unterofficers (Unteroffiziere) Lance Corporals (Gefreiter) Rank and File The main strength of the force was the contingent of native troops that far outnumbered their European counterparts. The uniform descriptions that follow are for European troops only. The native contingents wore a much simpler uniform. Each of the colonies had a distinctive facing color. Cornflower blue for Southwest Africa, White for East Africa and bright Poppy Red for the Cameroons and Togoland. Buttons and lace were of silver for officers and white metal and worsted for the men. Rank distinctions were as for the German infantry. The Slouch Hat was the most distinctive feature of the uniform. It was 15 cm. high made from grey felt. The 12 cm brim was turned up on the right side and fastened with a large German cockade. The hat band was of silk for officers and wool braid for enlisted men. The band was 3.5 cm wide. The brim was bound with the same material, wool or silk depending on rank. The braid was in the facing color of the colony or branch of service.
The Schutztruppen in South West Africa around 1900 consisted of: 1 Staff Officer/ Commander 1 Staff Officer/ Second in command 4 Captains (Hauptleute) 4 1st Lieutenants 18 2nd Lieutenants 5 Medical Officers 1 Veterinarian 6 Deputy Paymasters 142 NCO’s 568 Other Ranks The Schutztruppen for German East Africa made up the largest force although the bulk of the strength came from native troops. Out of a peak strength of 2,215 officers and men only 165 ment were German troops. 2 11 17 15 60 1 15 26 1 13 1 3
