What My Repairman Said
T
here are two opposing theories in my house: 1) As the editor of appliance DESIGN magazine, when the washing machine, the refrigerator and living room light switch all break the same week, I am fully qualified to fix everything on my own, preferably using the tried and true method of taking it apart and putting it together again. Or 2) We should call the repairman. Because in my house it is more about the theorist than the theory, I had the somewhat ignoble but enlightening opportunity to hang about and make chitchat while an appliance repairman fixed what turned out to be a dead lid switch, faulty terminator (I was sure it was the compressor /exhales), and 800 watts of light running through a 600-rated (and quite toasty) dimmer switch. Here’s a guy who maybe’s not so great at using the belt on his blue jeans, but who has seen every two-belt in the business. He’s been inside more washers and dryers and freezers and white goods than I’ve seen pictures of. Needless to say, the repairman had some strong opinions on modern appliance designs. First of all, he’s not such a big fan of our
(and our government’s) efforts toward energy efficiency. The repairman related a number of stories of appliances that reduce energy consumption by reducing key components and functionality. One notorious example (who shall remain nameless) in his opinion was a line of washing machines that used the house’s own hot water to generate heat. This isn’t anything radical, but has become a repetitive and quite nasty surprise to new appliance owners who use a regulator to keep their water under 110ºF (for energy efficiency and child safety), or whose house puts the washer too far from the pipe, i.e. the dreaded “three minutes until the water heats up” scenario. Much of my repairman’s advice centered around relating the honest benefits and pitfalls of appliances to end users. He noted that while the designers know what their products can do and where they’re best used, once it gets to the salesman at a retail outlet they’re more concerned with making the sale than putting the right appliance in the hands of the right customer. Perhaps this is a lesson we can apply to how we build consumer products: rather than trying to fight old battles, think about a certain niche and design to their needs, and then make sure everyone from marketing to the floor manager at Sears knows exactly what it does and who it’s for.
