VSI Summary • VSI allows an external controller to control the switch i.e., to establish connections through the switch fabric • VSI “insulates” switch software running mission-critical traffic (FR/ATM PVCs) from new applications that may require frequent software upgrades (upgrade controller software thus adding new features without upgrading sw sw) • VSI allows multiple controllers: MPLS controllers, PNNI, AutoRoute, to control a switch • Controllers are optimized for the service to be delivered • VSI manages resource allocation so that controllers are completely independent and each service receives the QoS required • VSI allows independent overlay networks on a common ATM infrastructure 1201 1035_05F9_c2
