EDITOR’S
NOTE
A Word (or 500) About this Month’s Products At last, a small break. For anyone who has sent us a product submittal for our “Top Products of 2010” feature, that’s not how it works. We don’t choose which products were the top ones from a given year. Never have. Never will. The reality is, our readers choose all of our top products. Whether it’s our Readers’ Choice Awards or our end-ofthe-year wrap up about what was a Top Product of this year, the most we had to do with ranking any of the products was counting tallies.
Readers’ Choice Awards
For three years, ED+C and Sustainable Facility have run this contest where manufacturers submit their product (whether it just came out a week ago or 10 years ago) for a specific category, and our readership tells us which one they like the best. And letting the readers decide leads to some interesting choices. That’s why our co-winner in the Daylighting category this year is a flooring product. We can’t make stuff like that up. Read about that product and more on pages 10. If you’re still looking for more detail about how a flooring product can contribute to daylighting, read “A Higher Standard” from the June 2010 Sustainable Flooring special section (http://bit.ly/gA09Yx).
Throughout the year, our print issues run a New+Notable section. Every one of our Top Products of 2010 can be found in this section of last year’s magazines. The “voting process” consists of readers requesting more information about an interesting product or service. All that people need to do to “vote” for a certain product is look at the Reader Service Number located beneath each product, circle that number in the handy-dandy Reader Action Card that your magazine probably flipped to when you first picked it up, and drop the card in a mailbox. Voila! A “vote” has been cast! Think that’s a very un-environmentally friendly way for an environmental magazine to behave? Fine. A digital version of our issues are created every month. Readers can find a link to our Webcard, which functions just the same as our Reader Action Card, on the digital pages of the New+Notable section. Problem solved. Okay, you might be saying to yourself, “Don’t you choose which products get put in that New+Notable section?”Yes, we do. But we do our best to bring you the latest in environmental products that will, hopefully, benefit you while not being a detriment to the planet. Believe me, it takes a lot of time and effort to sort through the myriad products we get each and every day. So, enjoy the following pages that sum up the products that caught your interest from the past year. Others of us are going to kick our feet up for bit and enjoy this all-too-brief month off.
Top Products of 2010 Probably the most misconstrued editorial topic on our editorial calendar (which you can find on www.EDCmag. com), is our Top Products of a given year. As I mentioned above, we’re frequently given submissions suggesting a certain product’s inclusion in the feature. Again, that’s not how it works.
Cheers,

Glass-Ceramic: Steps to Achieving C2C Certification
PYRAN PLATINUM GLASS-CERAMIC SHOWN IN PRODUCTION. COURTESY OF SCHOTT.
Sustainability and life-cycle analysis (LCA) are becoming increasingly important as consumers and industry leaders want the facts to back-up environmental claims. SCHOTT, a German specialty glass manufacturer, continuously looks for ways to meet customer demands for environmentally friendly products and manufacturing processes. This year, the company achieved Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certification at the Silver level for PYRAN Platinum, SCHOTT’s fire-rated glass-ceramic. The application process for C2C certification was extensive, taking about 14 months to complete. SCHOTT started with a corporate goal to protect the environment and conserve natural resources. The company achieved this goal by removing the heavy metals normally used as refining agents in the glass-ceramic melts. For example, SCHOTT now produces architectural product PYRAN Platinum fire-rated glass ceramic exclusively by a microfloat process and is able to achieve high-quality, low bubble-count glass without the traditional refining additives antimony and arsenic. The next challenge was to inform SCHOTT’s architectural customers how they can add value to building projects using this environmentally friendly fire-rated glazing product. SCHOTT also wanted to benchmark its manufacturing process against other environmentally conscious companies in the industry.
C2C Program SCHOTT chose to work with McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry’s (MBDC) C2C program (www. mbdc.com) because of the close ties with the LEED building rating system. C2C is a rigorous eco-label
14
ed+c
J A N UA RY 1 1
that evaluates all aspects of product manufacturing, including raw material toxicity to both human and environmental health, recyclability, energy and water conservation, and corporate social responsibility. The program also includes an in-depth site audit of the manufacturing facility. Products can be C2C certified at four levels: Basic, Silver, Gold or Platinum. C2C-certified products can help a building qualify for Innovation in Design points in any LEED rating system and are included in the Environmentally Preferred Purchasing Program for government buildings.
Steps to Certification The first challenge faced as an applicant was the requirement to disclose, under the protection of a non-disclosure agreement, to MBDC the chemical composition of SCHOTT’s product down to 100 parts per million, along with the specifications from all of the company’s raw material suppliers. SCHOTT was also required to provide detailed process flow diagrams of its manufacturing process. This detailed proprietary information had never been disclosed to an outside company and was a radical change from SCHOTT’s normal business practice. It was thanks to the determined focus of top management at SCHOTT’s manufacturing site, who believed in what a C2C certification would mean for the product, to divulge these details. The second step in the application process was to collect detailed energy and water usage at SCHOTT’s manufacturing site. PYRAN Platinum glass-ceramic is manufactured at SCHOTT Technical Glass Solutions, GmbH (SCHOTT
TGS) in Jena, Germany, where local regulations and culture have been focused on conservation of natural resources for many years. This part of the process was the most positive and satisfying because it gave SCHOTT a forum to tout the positive steps already taken in terms of energy and water conservation as well as develop new ideas that would result in new programs to implement for continuous improvement. Friedemann Toepfer, quality manager at SCHOTT TGS, said, “Although we have been focused on improving the ecological impact of our production processes, in working with the C2C Program we learned to consider the totality of the environmental impact of our product, from beginning to end of the product life cycle.” SCHOTT takes pride in the fact that it purchases 20 percent of its electricity demand from renewable sources and generates onsite solar electricity, which is put back into the grid. However, the company still has a way to go to offset the natural gas and electricity consumed in manufacturing. Obviously, glass melting and processing are very energy intensive. MBDC recommended several reputable U.S. suppliers of renewable energy credits from whom SCHOTT could consider purchasing in the future. Water conservation has been a major focus at SCHOTT’s manufacturing site. To underscore this focus, Schott provided a water balance and flow diagram to MBDC showing all water usage and wastewater streams. SCHOTT already uses greywater for 90 percent of the total water need at its manufacturing site. Freshwater is used only for drinking water and sensitive manufacturing
process steps. All process water is in continuous loops, and only evaporative losses are replaced. Wastewater is routed to the local wastewater treatment plant, which produces biogas. These are examples of the types of water conservation MBDC is looking for in its evaluation for C2C certification. The final area of concentration of the C2C program is corporate social responsibility, including labor practices and ethics, and service to the local community. Additional consideration is given to social responsibility programs that have been accredited by a third party and to programs in place at the manufacturing sites of raw material suppliers.
Introducing
THE NEW
Results SCHOTT’s overall experience with the C2C certification process was very positive and informative. The certification is reviewed on a yearly basis, which gives applicants the opportunity to strive for higher levels of certification to acknowledge continuous improvement toward the goals of sustainability and conservation of resources. Thanks to SCHOTT’s involvement with C2C, the company implemented a recycling program for its glass-ceramic that was previously thought to be technically unfeasible in the U.S. SCHOTT is now considering applying for C2C certification for environmentally friendly products in other markets. The feedback from SCHOTT’s customers has been very positive. Most are familiar with C2C and appreciate the added value the certification provides. DURO-LAST ROOFING
What We Mean When We Say ‘Green’ In some circles, “green roof” means “vegetative roof.” But in fact, the term “green roof” really refers to a roofing system that’s sustainable. That is, it provides the longterm environmental benefits that building owners and managers are seeking for their high-performance commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. This is what we mean when we say “green”: A green roof is cool. It has high reflectivity and emissivity values that reduce the amount of heat transferred into a building. This translates into reduced energy costs (in virtually all climates) and increased comfort level and productivity for building occupants.
A green roof is lightweight. It requires less fuel to transport to the jobsite than other roofing systems. In many cases, it can be installed over an existing roof without an expensive and land-filling tear-off. A green roof is solar-ready. It can accommodate the wide variety of rooftop photovoltaic equipment that’s available today. A green roof membrane is also an important part of a vegetative roof installation. Regardless of what you’re installing on top of it, a green roof is part of a complete sustainable rooftop system. A green roof uses environmentallyfriendly processes. Manufacturing a green roof requires less energy than other roofing materials, plus minimizes scrap. The scrap that
is produced is recycled back into production. Installation creates little material waste, and the roof is recyclable at the end of its useful life on the rooftop. A green roof is one that can help facilities obtain credits toward the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED and LEED-EB certification. The LEED program and a similar program called Green Globes are well-established and aid specifiers, building owners and facility managers in selecting high-performance building components, including roofing systems. Manufacturers of green roofing systems also are recognized by the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Roof Products Program and the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC).
The white Duro-Last Cool Zone roofing system is the best green roof choice for your facility.
Green, as in environmental friendliness: closed-loop manufacturing, membrane recyclability and longterm performance.
Green, as in the money you’ll save with the Cool Zone system – from reducing energy bills to preserving building components.
Green, as in the best membrane to install under a rooftop garden system.

Franklin International, the maker of renowned Titebond wood glues and construction adhesives and sealants, answers that question with a full line of products with such low VOC content that they easily meet both the strictest VOC regulations – and the contractor’s toughest demands for performance on the job site. Franklin’s line of Titebond GREENchoice adhesives and sealants stand out for their environmental friendliness, superior performance characteristics and application breadth. First, because they are so low in VOCs, they do not just meet – but easily surpass – strict state codes for VOC content in both consumer and commercial construction products. In addition, they exceed both the Leadership in Energy Environmental Design (LEED) standards and the National Green Building Standard, co-written by the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC). Green building standards aside, the low-VOC formulation of GREENchoice products enables the specifier and contractor to breathe easy in the knowledge that they are not exposing inhabitants of their building project to contaminants that can cause short- and long-term adverse health problems. Depending upon length of exposure, VOCs can cause simple discomfort, such as eye, nose and throat irritation, or more serious problems, such as memory loss. Some organic compounds also are known carcinogens. Specifiers and contractors also can rest assured that they can turn to GREENchoice for the right adhesive or sealant for virtually any bonding application on the residential or commercial job site. The GREENchoice program includes 16 low-VOC adhesives and sealants, developed to bond
specific materials or for use as general-purpose products. The core GREENchoice line offers seven solvent-free construction adhesives and sealants and one eco-friendly polyurethane adhesive. These products include such versatile formulas as adhesives for heavyduty construction or project and repair, as well as application-specific formulas for bonding such materials as drywall or acoustical tiles. The GREENchoice program also offers specialty adhesives for bonding FRP (fiber reinforced panels) as well as three wood flooring adhesives and an innovative sound and moisture system for concrete subfloors. An advanced sealant for siding, windows, doors and vents and a new metal roof sealant also have earned the highly regarded
GREENchoice designation for environmental friendliness. Franklin International has stood on the forefront of adhesive development for 75 years. In addition, the company pioneered the industry’s first solvent-free adhesive more than two decades ago. The company’s unparalleled experience in adhesives and its deep commitment to both superior product performance and the environment are evident in the entire GREENchoice line. WALLTITE US and ENERSHIELD Air Barrier Materials Increase Whole-Wall Performance
It’s not enough for an air barrier product to function on its own, because in the real world, air barriers interact with different wall components. It is only when air barrier materials are tested as a part of complete wall assemblies that results can be treated as gospel. The Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) has such a test. The ASTM E 2357 Air Leakage of Air Barrier Assemblies assessment determines whether the entire system is effective as a whole and what materials are compatible with others within the system, including types of caulking, sealing and other components. Although few have passed the rigorous test, both the WALLTITE US spray-applied polyurethane foam (SPF) insulating air barrier and the ENERSHILD air/water-resistant barrier passed with flying colors. In fact, when measuring the air leakage of a wall mock-up, both BASF materials helped their assemblies substantially exceed required air leakage control performance levels allowed by ABAA. The testing validates use of ENERSHIELD and WALLTITE as single-material air barrier assemblies for all wall claddings. Window openings, wall penetrations, sheathing joints and the field of the wall can work together to provide seamless building protection.

More about the WALLTITE insulating air barrier Used in industrial, commercial and institutional buildings, the WALLTITE system is a closed-cell SPF that creates an insulating air barrier. It eliminates uncontrolled air leakage by providing seamless, monolithic construction, complete system continuity, superior effective insulation R-value and virtual air impermeability. WALLTITE technology is unique in the way that it allows design professionals and building owners to specify a material that is engineered to meet and exceed required performance criteria for every code and climate. These factors combine to increase building energy efficiency and significantly reduce operating cost, while improving occupant comfort, health and safety. The WALLTITE spray-applied system also provides the design flexibility to address highperformance building envelope challenges in all types of buildings, including those with unusual shapes and contours. For more information, visit www.walltite.com
More about ENERSHIELD air/waterresistant barriers
is a one-component, fluid-applied vapor impermeable air/water-resistive barrier. This resilient waterproof coating may be roller-, brush- or spray-applied directly to approved wall substrates. Formulated with premium elastomeric polymers, ENERSHIELD barriers are made to balance strength, resilience, abrasion resistance, water-resistance and controlled water vapor permeability. These characteristics are combined to create a high-performance material with a low film thickness. For more information, visit www.enershield.basf.com
What they went through The ASTM E 2357 test is performed on an 8-by-8-foot wall mock-up that includes typical wall penetrations. The air barrier assembly is applied to the wall, which is then mounted in a sealed test chamber that can apply and measure both positive and negative air-pressure differentials across the wall structure. The assembly undergoes a “conditioning” process where the assembly is subjected to both positive and negative loads to confirm that the various materials will actually work together for an airtight seal.

CLIMATEMASTER
D.C. Condo Goes Green on a Tight Schedule The “Alta at Thomas Circle” – located just a few blocks from the White House – is recognized as the first certified LEED condo/mixed-use development in the District of Columbia. The Alta includes 126 residential units plus two retail spaces on the first floor – all packed into 13 stories and a five-level below-grade parking garage. What sets the Alta development apart from other higher-end condos around the downtown Washington area are its green characteristics. Everything from insulation, to paints, to the water-source heat pump, closed-loop heating-and-cooling system were carefully selected to qualify the building for certification under the UGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. According to Al Hedin, senior vice president of development at residential developer PN Hoffman Inc. in Washington, D.C., the original specifications included equipment that used R-22 refrigerant. During the construction phase, the developer decided to switch to water-source units that use EarthPure HFC 410A. ClimateMaster’s new R-410A Tranquility system was selected. Duncan & Shapiro, Rockville, Md., was the mechanical contractor selected to install the Alta comfort systems. Today, the company provides single-source HVAC and plumbing systems design-build capability for both new and retrofit construction projects. “The construction team ultimately came to the decision that if the somewhat higher cost would be feasible, and if delivery of the equipment could happen within the set schedule, we’d move forward with it,” according to DMR Associates sales engineer Mike Benson. “Physically, we didn’t have to change anything in the job to accommodate the R-410A equipment; the R-22 and HFC-410A cabinets are the same dimension, and with the same water flows,” Benson added. All of the Alta’s residential units have one or two water-to-water heat pumps. The closed loop includes a boiler and cooling tower installed on the roof. Hedin says vertical-stack heat pump units were used in an effort to conserve floor space. “The residential units are relatively tight, and we had about six square feet of floor area in each residential unit
26

that we would need to house the heat pump,” Hedin says. Many of the smaller systems we used are in closet spaces, or even built into the kitchen island.” “On the heat pump unit itself – in most of these condos – all of the ductwork comes off the top and then elbows out both ways. The exposed, spiral ductwork feeds into that ‘loft’ feel and look,” added Hedin.
Each unit incorporates risers or vertical piping. The heat pump units come complete with risers, and they can then be stacked vertically on top of each other from one story to the next. “They’re also pre-piped. So, it’s like putting blocks together vertically,” added Benson. “One set of pipes fits inside the other set of pipes, and then you go to the next floor, do the next unit and so on.” Advertorial

Emerging Sustainable and Recycling Leadership in ICF Manufacturing You have heard about the benefits of building with insulated concrete form (ICF) walls for years. ICFs are proven, energy-efficient products that have been well documented to significantly reduce heating and cooling loads in buildings. These products are typically foam stay-in-place concrete forms specified for projects designed to provide high-performance building envelope walls. Airlite Plastics Co. in Omaha, Neb., a familyowned company established in 1946, manufactures ICFs as part of a diverse line of products offered to their customers. Approximately 1.6 billion units of plastic and foam are produced annually. This is accomplished with 675 employees - working around the clock - within 650,000 square feet of building space. Airlite produces plastics containers and insulated packaging products for the food, medical, pharmaceutical, animal health, agricultural, mail order and Sporting Goods markets, as well as ICFs for the construction industry. Go to the grocery store and pick up some ice cream, a tub of margarine or foam cooler. Those containers are likely to come from a division of Airlite Plastics Co. Fifteen years ago, Airlite began manufacturing ICFs products for its first customer. Since then, Airlite has provided their engineering design services and manufacturing expertise to several ICF sales/marketing companies. Five years ago, after seeing the growth of the green building market, Airlite decided to design, develop and build its own ICF wall system. Early in 2006, Airlite introduced the Fox Blocks ICF Wall System brand as the latest generation of insulated concrete form available from the manufacture to the market. All totaled as one of the industry leading ICF manufactures in North America, Airlite has manufactured more than 33 million square feet of ICF wall surface for the construction industry. The backbone of most ICF products is the plastic web connector. It is the inner strength of the product. A good way to gauge the structural strength of an ICF form is to find the ratio (by weight) of plastic (webs) to foam (panels). At Airlite, there are a large number of machine presses molding plastic products to specific tolerances. Anything that does not meet the product specifications is set aside and designated as usable plastic waste (scrap) to be recycled. None of this plastic scrap leaves the
30
ed+c
J A N UA RY 1 1
plant, so there is zero plastic landfill contribution. These out-of-spec products are transferred under the same roof to the recycling area. While at recycling, the plastic scrap is mechanically ground into flakes, palletized and then put through a proprietary process to be remanufactured. This first-generation recycled plastic is then transferred to the production machine presses, under the same roof, to mold Fox Blocks ICF plastic webs and corner brackets. These fresh molded webs and corner brackets are then delivered to the EPS Division plant, onsite, for placement into the foam molds that produce finished Fox Blocks Insulated Concrete Forms. This internal recycling process dramatically lowers the overall ICF manufacturing carbon footprint because there are minimal transportation costs; everything is performed onsite. Airlite is using their in-house plastic waste stream process to source material to manufacture ICF products. The benefits of the Airlite recycling and molding process are multiple. The plastic resin is a main component that drives the costs of ICF products. The industry balances plastic content versus competitive costs in the market. Airlite is delivering one of the highest ratios of recycled plastic weight to foam content in the industry at lower costs. A single source of
recycled first-generation plastic and the molding of the fresh recycled plastic webs used in the manufacturing of foam ICF forms equals less cost for more consistent product strength, a key benefit to the onsite contractor! Tony Penna of Penna Concrete and Masonry, a long time installer of ICFs said, “Fox Blocks are at least 25 percent stronger than any form I have installed, and I have tried most of them.” Most importantly, Airlite has found a unique delivery method of manufacturing ICF forms with the lowest carbon footprint possible to ensure Fox Blocks, as a sustainable building product, treads as lightly as possible on energy resources while offering a high-performance building envelope advantage year after year. Fox Blocks ICF Wall Systems is manufactured in Omaha, Neb. (Corporate Center), Orlando, Fla., Northbridge, Mass., Post Falls, Idaho, Jerome, Idaho, Colorado Springs, Colo., New Brighton, Pa. and McFarland, Calif. KINGSPAN
Sustainable Designs Begin with EnvelopeFirst Motivated by energy challenges and greenbuilding mandates, building professionals share a newfound enthusiasm for wall and roof performance. They recognize that a wellplanned building envelope leads to greater energy efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint. Kingspan Insulated Panels North America is a global leader in the design and manufacture of insulated metal panels for roof and wall applications that supports this EnvelopeFirst approach to building design and construction. Focusing on enclosure performance, including durability, air tightness and moisture and thermal control, Kingspan insulated metal panels (IMPs) provide an aesthetically appealing and highly sustainable solution to architectural, commercial/industrial and cold storage markets in the United States and Canada as well as export destinations. Through energy modeling, Kingspan has been able to demonstrate that EnvelopeFirst is a critical first step to a high-performance net-zero energy building, followed by energy conservation measures that include daylighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, lighting and controls. Among the most important envelope criteria are: building shape and orientation; service life and durability of materials; quality assurance in the construction phase; energy efficiency during building operations; and resistance to air and moisture intrusion. Kingspan IMPs contribute positively in all of these categories thanks to a continuous rigid insulation core that provides high R-values and unsurpassed airtightness. With R-values ranging from R-4 to R-27, the thick insulation core, which is protected by a durable metal shell, protects the building for its entire service life. Continuous insulation leaves no gaps, seams or thermal bridges in the enclosure, and accounts for the IMP’s core’s high thermal efficiency. In addition, the insulation is rigid, preventing the efficiency loss caused by compression. And because the insulation is located on the outside of the building structure, it prevents the transfer of heat and cold through the framing.

The continuous, structural integrity of Kingspan IMPs guarantees consistent lifetime thermal performance – and associated reductions in energy use, operational costs and carbon footprint. In fact, testing and field results show IMPs – including Kingspan Benchmark’s Designwall line – contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability in a number of ways, most notably: Q Energy efficiency. IMPs have a core of continuous, rigid insulation for industry leading R- and U-values with superior airtightness performance. Q Recycled and recyclable. The exterior skins contain a substantial amount of recycled content, and the panels themselves are recyclable at end of life. Q Faster construction times. IMPs are simple to detail and attach, reducing schedules and installation errors.
Q Life-cycle costing benefits. IMPs last as long as the service life of a typical commercial building. The durable panels also reduce operation costs for energy and maintenance and offer multiple end-of-life reuse options. Q Building certification and green targets. IMPs potentially contribute to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification programs and the path to net-zero energy targets. It all starts with the EnvelopeFirst. Buildings must be designed for optimized performance, beginning with the envelope, in order to achieve LEED energy goals and the net-zero energy targets identified by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) commercial building initiative. IMPs, like those from Kingspan Insulated Panels North America, help ensure envelope performance that meets these high standards.

INSULATED METAL PANELS
Offer Proven Performance with Unlimited Design Options
Long-Term Performance Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs) have proven to be sturdy, timesaving building elements in roof and wall applications for more than 30 years. The growing interest in improving building performance has brought IMPs to the forefront as a solid solution to the best use of resources in designing and operating buildings.
Thermal Efficiency IMPs were one of the first exterior wall systems to place insulation outside of the support system while maintaining or improving thermal performance. IMPs are installed outside the metal stud cavity or other structural support mechanism to minimize thermal bridging while efficiently incorporating a water, air and vapor barrier. The single-unit wall assembly also eliminates the need for other materials and construction trade coordination. Many IMP products are produced via a highly efficient continuous bonding technology. In this process, foam injected between two metal sheets undergoes a chemical reaction causing it to rise and bond to the metal skins, filling the interior cavity. IMPs can also be manufactured by a laminating process in which pre-cured

foam board is adhered to preformed metal panels and placed under pressure in a platen press or pinch-roll operation. With all types of IMPs the factory controlled, uniform foam thickness provides consistent insulation performance and eliminates interior cavities throughout the panel. The finished product is a complete insulated panel with R-values that range between R-14 and R-48, depending on the core thickness and mean core temperature. Normally, insulation placed within a building’s stud cavity can be as little as 33 percent effective. In contrast, IMPs can provide up to 95 percent thermal efficiency. This high level of performance in the field is verified by the IMP’s compliance with ASTM C-1363-05 dealing with thermal performance and ASTM C 518 related to steady-state thermal transmission properties (www.astm.org). IMPs also protect the building’s interior and exterior and reduce airflow in and out of the building envelope, which helps improve HVAC performance. This may contribute to points for Optimized Energy Performance if the building is aiming for certification in the USGBC’s voluntary LEED guidelines. IMPs also save resources
by reducing or eliminating field cutting and material waste.
Multi-Powered Unit IMPs typically consist of an insulated core, exterior and interior metal skins, double tongueand-groove joinery, and concealed clips and fasteners. They are ideal for the entirety of an exterior wall or roof system; they can also be used in conjunction with other panels for multi-component solutions. Regardless of climate conditions, IMPs offer the long-term durability and low maintenance provided by metal. The high-performance coatings applied to the metal skins maintain the aesthetic values for decades by protecting the panels from exposure to sunlight, wind and harsh weather. Architects and building owners are turning to IMPs for proven thermal performance. But they also appreciate the benefits of reduced installation time compared to multi-component assemblies, and a wide range of color, style and size options to fit all types of designs. MORTAR NET
Mortar Net USA: Drainage Systems that Cut Time and Labor SPECIFIER ALERT – Mortar Net with Insect Barrier Include Mortar Net with Insect Barrier in your specifications. Simply insert “with Insect Barrier” into Mortar Net specs. New Mortar Net with Insect Barrier lets water out without letting insects in. Insects that enter through weep-holes and nest in the wall cavities can cause serious problems. While our popular Weep Vents guard weep holes against blockage by many types of insects or debris, new Mortar Net with Insect Barrier adds another layer of defense—inside the wall cavity! Otherwise, it’s the same Mortar Net product you’ve used for years. It gives you the same dependable moisture control, same mortar capturing “dovetail” design, the same quick and easy installation, and the same LEED-friendly content in the main materials. Now, however, one side is covered with a special fabric that still lets water out and lets air in, but also creates a barrier against insect infestations.
TotalFlash: Total Protection that Installs in a Flash In a timed contest at the World of Concrete Expo, a lone brickmason (who had never used this product before) was able to install TotalFlash in one-third the time of a twomason team installing conventional flashing details. This computes to a potential saving of 67 percent in time and labor costs! (See the video of this “TotalFlash Challenge,” on our website.) The TotalFlash secret: Every modern moisture-control method has been ingeniously pre-assembled onto handy, 5 1/2-foot panels of 40-mil flexible flashing. Masons no longer waste time hand-cutting large flashing rolls, and since it’s an “all-in-one” flashing system, there’s no waiting on the jobsite for various parts deliveries (even screws are in each carton). Can be installed at very high speed, even by one worker. To maximize time savings, preformed corner boots and stainless steel corners are also available. Architects get the consistent coverage they specified. Owners and builders enjoy swift completion and superior wall longevity. Masons are freed to lay brick rather than cut flashing. And tenants can breathe easier, knowing they have excellent protection against mold growth or moisture damage.

The Center for Green Schools at USGBC At the U.S. Green Building Council, our members, supporters and staff have all committed to a vision: green schools for everyone within this generation. Last fall, we took an important step in making this vision a reality by launching the Center for Green Schools at USGBC. By their very nature, schools demonstrate our hopes for the future. What better way to demonstrate our commitment to an economically, environmentally and socially prosperous future than by building those values into the places where we education tomorrow’s leaders? To ensure we achieve this vision, the Center for Green Schools is expanding efforts to drive change in how schools and campuses are designed, constructed and operated to enhance student learning experiences. LEED-certified buildings are often praised for the positive impact they have on tenant health and operating costs, but those benefits are typically associated with commercial and office buildings. The center brings attention to the countless school buildings and campuses that can benefit from the same advantages of other LEED-certified buildings. The center is helping to engage educators in creating sustainable learning environments for their students and apply solid research to inform leadership – from school boards to college presidents – about the benefits of healthy, high-performing schools. There are also new resources and advocacy tools being developed to support the USGBC Students program and a nationwide network of more than 1,000 dedicated Green School Committee volunteers from USGBC’s chapter network who are leading local and regional campaigns to promote healthy green school buildings. The center works with state and local governments to draft smart, practical policies, and we provide trainings and helpful resources to those who need it most – K-12 schools serving lower-income families, under-resourced institutions and community colleges. During the 2011-2012 school year, the center will launch one of its most important initiatives, the Green Schools Fellows program, which will give USGBC the opportunity to hire and train individuals to be embedded as Sustainability Officers within

school districts across the country for a term of at least three years. “We see an opportunity to educate a new generation of leaders we call sustainability natives, who are capable of driving global market transformation toward green schools,” said Rachel Gutter, director of the Center for Green Schools. “Our job is to equip the people who make the case, the people who make the decisions and the people who get things done by elevating and accelerating important conversations with district and campus stakeholders and providing the tools and resources to help
make transformation possible.” The Center for Green Schools’ programs are supported in part through financial contributions, including the center’s first Founding Sponsor, United Technologies Corporation (UTC), whose contribution is leading to hundreds of schools across the nation becoming green and more energy efficient and will help build hundreds of LEED-registered green school projects in the next few years. WESTERN RED CEDAR LUMBER ASSOCIATION
Choose Materials that Captivate while They Sustain By Katherine Chia Architects and clients expect a lot out of materials. They desire a rich palette of durable options to create innovative designs that express attractive, lasting building structures and surfaces. A growing number of end-users desire designs that combine beauty and durability with sustainability as a top priority in residential and commercial projects. They want the end result to be beautifully sustainable. A quiet family retreat along a lake in Ovid, N.Y., is a great example of a project that combines materials long on beauty and green considerations. The Western Red Cedar cladding on a series of buildings that stretch through a forested glen leading to the head of a waterfall blends perfectly the area’s natural beauty while being mindful of environmental impacts. Wood also offers possibilities beyond conventional cladding. It can provide a structural purpose, a refined level of interior finish or a compelling material detail that enhances the overall design concept. Deep hues and grains inherent in wood introduce an organic authenticity of scale and texture that is unique to the rich warmth of a truly natural material. Environmental impact considerations continue to play a significant role in material selection. Striking a balance between aesthetic considerations and minimizing the environmental footprint brings a lasting, eco-friendly design to life whether an elegant restroom designed to fit seamlessly into a picturesque park setting or a doubleskin façade that protects a building from direct solar radiation while still allowing light to pass through. Real, naturally sustainable materials captivate, engage and perform like few other products. When manufactured with resource-efficient processes, they introduce visually compelling, eco-friendly beauty. A post-and-beam multipurpose educational facility targeting LEED gold combines sustainable design and well-crafted materials choices. The building at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, houses a student union, Elders lounges, study areas, classrooms and ceremonial spaces. High occupancy buildings can have

toxicity and long-term indoor environmental impacts that also need to be considered when selecting materials. Evaluating materials can be complex and challenging. Following a few important criteria for selecting authentic, truly sustainable materials will produce attractive projects that incorporate compelling design, durability and sustainability. Q Natural, renewable: Truly authentic materials are harvested from sustainably managed sources and have third-party verification of their environmental attributes. Q Manufacturing efficiency: Resourceefficient processes are important. They reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases, minimize waste and impact on global warming, and are carbon neutral. Q Local sources: Local and regional material sources save energy and resources and minimize environmental cost. Q Repurpose: Creatively reusing materi-
als prevents premature product disposal, introduces unique design elements and expends resources. Q Minimize packaging: All-natural materials that do not require packaging are the greenest. Recycled or recyclable packaging also minimizes environmental footprint. Q Durability: Materials that last offer the best performance. Less maintenance and replacement need increases useable lifetime, stretches budgets and reduces environmental impacts. Marrying sustainability with design is accomplished through an engaged process. Enduring, captivating projects are designed and built from materials choices that consider aesthetics, durability and environmental impacts. KATHERINE CHIA IS A PRINCIPAL AT DESAI/CHIA ARCHITECTURE. community, establishing a sustainable financial infrastructure for the institution. The result is a new, nine-story, 175,000-squarefoot building on Third Avenue that facilitates teaching and learning with greater comfort due to its energy-efficient and environmentally friendly design. The structure houses space for academic laboratories, studios, classrooms, science, research and public spaces. As the engineer of record, Syska Hennessy provided MEP, sustainable, fire protection, audio visual, IT, security and cogenera-
