Ma-usk-ksi hieß er eigentlich, der kleine gelbhäutige Buschmann [Wort- und Sacherklärungen am Schluß des Heftes] auf Bur Krischansens Karakulfarm östlich von Rietfontein am Rande der großen Kalahari. Aber wer von den echten Afrikandern oder den Deutschen hätte ein Buschmannswort mit seinen seltsamen Schnalz-und Zischlauten richtig aussprechen können? Ma-usk-ksi wurde einfach "Mauki" gerufen, und auch die hochmütigen Hereros und die lustigen Hottentotten, die bei Bur Krischansen in Dienst standen, befahlen: Mauki, hierher! Mauki, dahin! Vor fünf Jahren war der Buschmann, damals fast noch ein Kind, aus dem Lande Kaukau von der großen Dürre vertrieben worden, als sogar die zählebigen Wüstenmelonen, die Tschambas, vertrockneten und abstarben. Den Marsch nach Süden überlebte nur er von der kleinen Horde. Die anderen alle ließen ihr Leben im großen Durst, noch ehe sie das Tal des Epukiro erreicht hatten. Pitter Krischansen fand den jungen Mauki fiebernd und phantasierend am Rande seines Stauteiches, der sich in der langen Trockenzeit in einen winzigen Schlammpfuhl verwandelt hatte. Zuerst wollte der lange Bur den Jungen mit dem Reitstock wegprügeln,doch dann kam ihm ein guter Einfall. Er packte das magere Kerlchen auf den Sattel des Reitochsen, brachte ihn zu dem Viehkral seiner Farm und befahl der Gesindeköchin, einer alten Hottentottin, die auf den frommen Namen Maria Magdala hörte: "Laß ihn die Kessel auskratzen und Kleiwasser saufen, wenn es die Schafe nicht mehr mögen. Ob du ihm Aschkuchen backen darfst? Bitte, von deinem Mehl, Maria Magdala, soviel du willst. Wenn er wieder auf den Beinen steht, soll er dem
alten Rietboy bei der neuen Karakulherde zur Hand gehen!" Und in seinem Farmhaus nahm der Bure ein schmales blaues Heft und schrieb mit krakligen Buchstaben darauf: "Anlage Numero l zu dem Arbeitsvertrag Numero 169, abgeschlossen zwischen dem Karakulzüchter Pitter Krischansen auf Farm Epukiro-Ost, Protektorat Betschuanaland, und dem Buschmann ." Den Namen ließ er noch offen. Auf der ersten Seite des Lohnbuches trug er ein: "Verpflegung, Unterkunft und ärztliche Hilfe, gewährt für 65 Tage, je Tag 5 Schilling, gleich 16 Pfund 5 Schilling nach dem Münzfuß der Südafrikanischen Union; gelieferte Bekleidung, und zwar ." Das wollte er sich noch überlegen, wieviel er dem halbverhungerten Jungen für eine alte Reithose, ein zerrissenes Kattunjäckchen und zwei zerschlissene Wolldecken in Anrechnung bringen werde. Jedenfalls sollte der Bursche zu hören bekommen, daß er mindestens 50 Pfund abzuarbeiten habe, ehe er wieder in die Welt hinauszigeunern dürfe. Die Ausbeutung der Eingeborenen war selbstverständlich in dem Protektorat Betschuanaland verboten. Ein weises Krongesetz hatte schriftliche Arbeitsverträge und genaue Führung der Lohnbücher festgelegt; Arbeitsinspektoren hatten das Recht, beides zu überprüfen. Bei Bur Pitter Krischansen hatte noch keiner etwas beanstanden können. - So war Mauki zu seiner Arbeitsstelle gekommen. Die Zucht von Karakulschafen in Südwestafrika ist das reine Glücksspiel. Hier fehlt die Erfahrung, die die Usbeken und die Karakalpaken in den mittelasiatischen Repu-
bliken der großen Sowjetunion durch die jahrelange Aufzucht der genügsamen, aber doch so empfindlichen Fettschwanzschafe besitzen. Den Buren und den Deutschen, die Karakulschafherden hielten, kam es nur auf den Gewinn von möglichst viel Persianer- und Breitschwanzfellen an. Am meisten versessen waren sie auf die feingelockten Häute der Eintagslämmer mit dem zarten Haargekräusel, aus denen nach mancherlei Bearbeitung die kostbaren Persianer entstanden. Am höchsten bewertete der Rauchwarenhandel die Felle von vorzeitig geborenen Karakullämmern. Natürlich war es verboten, durch Schläge oder Fußtritte das Muttertier zu einer Frühgeburt zu zwingen. Aber wozu gab es das Mutterkorngift? Eine Spritze voll davon in die Adern des geduldigen Tieres gejagt, und schon vierundzwanzig Stunden später konnten die allerzartesten Fellchen auf die Trockenbretter gespannt werden. Freilich, häufig ging dann das Muttertier am Milchfieber oder an einer Infektion zugrunde. Da hatte natürlich der Hirte der Karakulherde schuld, der sich zuwenig um das leidende, so wertvolle Schaf gekümmert hatte. Die Usbeken lassen dem Muttertier mindestens ein Lamm, wenn sie Persianer gewinnen. Die Karakulzüchter am Rande der großen Kalahari aber sahen in der Aufzucht nur eine Kraftverschwendung. Sie zwangen die Schafe zum zweimaligen Lammen im Jahr. Auch dafür hatte die Wissenschaft ihnen die Mittel in die Hand gegeben; und wenn trotzdem der Erfolg ausblieb, dann trugen offensichtlich nur diese schwarz oder gelbhäutigen Nichtsnutze, die Hereros, Hottentotten oder Buschmänner, die Schuld daran, weil sie ihren Verpflichtungen aus dem paragraphenreichen Arbeitsvertrag nicht nachgekommen waren.
Bei offenkundiger Widersetzlichkeit oder anhaltender Faulheit war der Baas, der Herr der Farm, berechtigt, seine Kontraktarbeiter durch gelinde körperliche Züchtigung zur Erfüllung ihrer Vertragsverpflichtungen anzuhalten. Bur Pitter Krischansen war kein grausamer Herr. Er hütete sich, seine Knechte und Mägde bis zur Arbeitsunfähigkeit zu prügeln. Aber seinen Schambock ließ er rasch einmal auf dem Rücken seiner Helfer tanzen. Mauki konnte bald ein Lied davon singen. Als er Fieber und Abzehrung überwunden hatte und wieder sicher auf seinen mageren Beinen stehen konnte, hatte er der alten Hottentottenköchin Maria Magdala mit vielen Schnalzlauten und seltsamen Gesten seinen Dank gesagt und ihr versprochen, die Haut einer Puffotter voll Goldkörner aus der großen Wüste zu holen. Ja, am Lutyahau, tief drinnen im ewigen Trockenland, wo nur die zähesten Buschmänner streiften, gab es die gelben Körner, und er, Mauki, kannte die Schluchten am Ngam-NgamGebirge, in denen das seltsame Metall zu finden war, aus dem man nicht einmal einen Pfriem zum Lederdurchbohren hämmern konnte. Was die Hottentottin nicht verstand, das malte er mit einem Rötelbrocken auf flache Felsplatten, von denen es in dem vertrockneten Gras der Hochfläche genügend gab. Und die alte Maria Magdala lachte, als hätte man ihr die neueste Klatschgeschichte aus Rietfontein erzählt. Sie nahm das alles nicht als bare Münze. Buschmänner haben eine lebhafte Phantasie. Aber als sie am anderen Morgen unter der ausgedienten Wagenplache hervorkroch, die sie vor dem bitterkalten Nachtfrost schützte, war Mauki nicht mehr da. Er war wieder aufgebrochen zur großen Wanderung durch das Land Kaukau und die Kalahari.
Baas Krischansen lief rot an, als er erfuhr, daß Mauki verschwunden war. Für so gesund hatte er den gelbhäutigen Jungen noch gar nicht gehalten; sonst hätte er ihn längst in seine neuen Arbeitspflichten eingewiesen. Nein, nicht den Reitochsen ließ er satteln, heute mußte der Graubock, das Reitpferd, heran. Zwei Jagdhereros führten hochbeinige Setters an langen Lederriemen, ließen sie an den zerlumpten Decken, der Schlafstätte des Flüchtlings, Spur nehmen, und dann begann die Jagd auf Mauki. Der Buschmann war gelassen dahingeschlendert. Als die Mittagssonne auf die grellgelben versteinerten Tonhänge des östlichen Epukirotales strahlte, sahen die Verfolger einen schwarzen Punkt durch das Tal kriechen. "Da ist der Lumpenhund!" keuchte Baas Krischansen und wischte sich mit dem Schweißtuch die perlenden Tropfen von der Stirn. "Los, Okahula, die Hunde! Aber nehmt nicht die Beißkörbe ab. Mauki ist mir zu wertvoll. Mit zerbissener Kehle . Wie soll ich da zu meinen 50 Pfund Sterling Gold kommen?" Sie beobachteten, wie die hetzenden Tiere zu grauen Strichen wurden: zwölf graue Striche, die sich um den fetten schwarzen Punkt in der Mitte zu einem seltsamen Ornament ordneten. Gemächlich ritt Baas Krischansen den Hang hinab, lachend eilten die beiden Jagdhereros voraus. So fanden sie Mauki, ängstlich auf seinen Fersen hokkend und bei jedem spielerischen Ansprung der Hetzhunde in den feinkörnigen Sand rollend. Obgleich er einen harten Dornbaumknüppel in der Hand hielt, wagte er es nicht, ihn gegen die übermütigen Herrenhunde zu erheben. Verlegen lächelnd ließ er sich immer wieder überrennen, ertrug die schmerzhaften Kratzer der Hundepfoten und sagte nur immer wieder beruhigend "Tsek . tsek .
tschalli!" zu den aufgeregten Tieren. Mehr Worte seiner Sprache fand er auch nicht, als Baas Krischansen den harten, aber geschmeidigen Schambock auf seinem Buckel tanzen ließ, wobei ihm der dicke großmächtige Bur seine Sünden vorhielt: "Kontraktbruch, Lauselümmel! Zehn Jahre Kettenhaft wegen offenkundigen Diebstahls!" Und der Schambock riß aus dem Hosenboden des zerlumpten Kleidungsstückes ein neues Dreieck. "Ich werde dich lehren, Gottes und der Obrigkeit Gesetze zu halten, Mistkerl! Los, marsch, zurück zur Farm . oder ich lasse den Setters die Beißkörbe abnehmen!" Mauki verstand damals von der Sprache der weißen Herren noch wenig; doch er schlug den Weg ein, den der Schambock wies, fistelte: "Tsek . tsek . tschalli!" und wankte in der flirrenden Glut des Nachmittags das Epukirotal wieder aufwärts, bis er, zu Tode erschöpft, neben Maria Magdalas rußigen Kochkesseln zusammenbrach. Am andern Tage erfuhr Mauki, daß es für ihn so lange kein freies Streifen durch das geliebte Land Kaukau und die große Kalahari geben könne, bis die Schulden an Baas Pitter Krischansen auf Farm Epukiro-Ost bezahlt sein würden. Rietboy, der alte Ovambo, wurde gerufen, und an seinen zitternden Arm schmiedete man die Schelle, die ihn durch eine Stahlkette mit dem linken Bein des jungen Buschmannes verband, so lange, bis er alle Kunstgriffe des erfahrenen farbigen Schafzüchters gelernt hatte. Länger als ein Jahr waren sie zusammengefesselt, als Rietboy seine entzündeten und müden Augen schloß. Zwei Tage lang schleppte Mauki den verwesenden Leichnam des Alten auf seinem schmalen Rücken, bis er vor dem Farmhaus von den Ketten und dem Toten befreit wurde. Seitdem erfuhr er jedes halbe Jahr, wieviel Tage und Wo-
chen er noch zu arbeiten hätte, um der großen Schuld bei Baas Krischansen ledig zu werden. Daß er niemals frei wurde, verdankte er seiner Geschicklichkeit in der Betreuung der Karakulherde und den Buchführungskünsten des dicken Buren. 20 Muttertiere und 5 Böcke hatte Rietboy betreut. Nun waren es 110 geworden; doch der Baas dachte gar nicht daran, dem fleißigen Buschmann einen Gehilfen zu geben. Ab und zu wurde ihm als Prämie ein Kuhhorn voll Schnupftabak geschenkt, wenn er mehr Persianerfelle ablieferte, als sich der Farmer ausgerechnet hatte. Weit häufiger aber tanzte der Schambock auf seinem Rücken, falls eines der wertvollen Muttertiere bei der wissenschaftlich bewährten Praktik der Frühgeburt einging. Maria Magdala - sie hätte schlohweißes Haar gehabt, wenn man ihr die Zeit gegönnt hätte, sich zwischen den rauchenden Herdfeuern ihren Kopf zu waschen - heilte mit Kräutersuden und Lehmpflastern die Wunden und tröstete Mauki, der inzwischen zu einem Mann herangewachsen war: klein, mit weit ausladender Sitzpartie, sonst hager, Muskeln und Knochen überzogen von einer braunkörnigen Gelbhaut, dünne Bartzotteln um Mund und Kinn, dichtes strupplockiges Haar, nach allen vier Winden über der niedrigen Stirn abstehend, x-beinig auf den hornigen Fußsohlen dahineilend, wenn der Baas rief oder ein Muttertier mit jammernden Klagelauten die Geburtsstunde ankündete. "Als wenn der liebe Gott erst probiert hätte, wie er den Menschen formen soll!" meinte Baas Krischansen einmal in einer seiner nachdenklichen Stunden, nachdem er seine alte Familienbibel zugeschlagen hatte - neben dem Karakulkatalog und seinen Zuchtbüchern die einzige Lektüre,
die auf Farm Epukiro-Ost zu finden war, wenn man von einigen illustrierten Monatsheften absah. Die waren vom letzten Besuch seiner drei Söhne liegengeblieben, die in Pretoria und Kapstadt, der jüngste sogar in Oxford, weiß der Teufel was studierten: Erdgeschichte, Viechdoktor und einer gar Rechtsverdreher, damit er entweder als Kronrichter oder, noch besser, als gewandter Advokat in Mafeking oder Livingstone seine Pfunde verdienen konnte. Man schrieb das große Jahr 1945. Der zweite Weltkrieg war für die Afrikander mitgewonnen worden, obwohl man gegen die Nürnberger Rassengesetze eigentlich nichts einzuwenden hatte. In Südafrika standen alle Farbigen, mochten sie Inder, Basutos, Kaffern, Buschmänner, Hottentotten, Matabele, Griquas oder Zulus sein, unter Ausnahmerecht . Und die Johannisburger Juden sollte man in denselben Topf werfen, verlangten viele, die ebenso gesinnt waren wie der Baas von der Farm Epukiro-Ost. Die Coloureds durften gegen einen Weißen nicht als Zeugen auftreten, es sei denn bei einem Kapitalverbrechen. Ob es eins war, das mußte aber erst der oberste Kronrichter entscheiden. Viele tausend Fälle lagen vor, und man würde wohl das Jahr 2000 schreiben, ehe sie aufgearbeitet waren. Bodenbesitz gab es für die Bunthäute nur in gewissen Reservationen. Wer nicht auf seiner eigenen Scholle saß, hatte dem Distriktkommissar vierteljährlich die Erfüllung der auf seiner Person ruhenden Arbeitspflichten nachzuweisen. Es waren weise Gesetze, über die sich Baas Krischansen nur freuen konnte. Wenn die Hitze unerträglich wurde, wenn das letzte Grashälmchen zwischen den Schieferplatten und den Tonschollen des Epukirotales zu welken begann, die Hirten die Wüstenmelonen mit ihren Axtstöcken aufschlugen,
um den hungernden Karakuls saftige Nahrung zu bieten, lud der Baas - Aubaas, großer Herr, nannten ihn die Schmeichler - Mauki und seine Helfer zur Abrechnung auf die Farm, natürlich immer einen nach dem andern; denn in dieser schweren Zeit bedurften die Herden ganz besonderer Obhut. Dann saß der fette Farmer im Schaukelstuhl unter einer künstlich ergrünten Dornakazie, die mit bunten Lichtern und schillernden Spiegelkugeln geschmückt war, zur rechten Hand den eisgekühlten Sodasiphon, zur linken die duftende Whiskyflasche, mischte sich seine Portion in einem hohen Stengelglas und schnaufte: "Weihnacht, Mauki! Fröhliche Weihnacht . Ach, du hast ja keine Ahnung, was Weihnacht ist. Christkind in der Krippe . Zu Bethlehem im Stall, Mauki, und die Engel sangen. Tatsache, Dämlack! Kannst du dir natürlich nicht vorstellen!" Und dann grölte er einen alten Südwestersong. "Tja, Mauki! Also Abrechnung! Ordnung muß sein! Du hast bekommen ." Und er las aus dem schmalen blauen Heft, dessen Umschlag immer mehr zerfledderte, vor: "Verpflegung nach Staffel primo des Kontrakts für 395 Tage und Nächte c 3 Schilling Wert, dazu Bekleidung, Unterkunft nach Staffel sekundo, ferner als Vorschuß und Abschlag, endlich zur Regulierung deiner vielfältigen Besuche . steht alles hier verzeichnet, Mauki . macht also insgesamt: 156 Pfund 15 Schilling 10 Pence . wovon abgehen: Lohn, Prämien, Geschenke 106 Pfund 10 Schilling . verbleiben zu meinen Gunsten 50 Pfund von den andern Lappalien wollen wir nicht reden -, die wir dem Verrechnungskonto zuschreiben . So ." Womit Mauki bei Baas Pitter Krischansen in einem Debet von insgesamt 250 Pfund Sterling verblieb, worüber er
Quittung leisten mußte durch Abdruck beider Daumen auf dem Kontoblatt! "Hier ist das Stempelkissen . Sooo, langsam von rechts nach links rollen . Schöner klarer Fingerabdruck! Mauki, wenn du nicht so ein braver Kerl wärst, ich hätte dich längst in die Kalahari gejagt, wo sie am trockensten ist. 250 Pfund! Junge, Junge, so viel Schulden, wie 40 beste Persianerfellchen wert sind! Na, dann schenk dir mal einen ein!" Und er wies in die Zimmerecke, wo ein verbeulter Blechbecher neben einer bauchigen Flasche stand. Während der Buschmann den fuseligen Sprit durch die trockene Kehle rinnen ließ, grölte der Baas: "O Tannebaum, o Tannebaum, wie grün sind deine Blätter! . Los, raus, Mauki, du stinkst . Du grünst nicht bloß zur Sommerzeit . nein, auch im Winter ." Und da mußte er, der Aubaas, fürchterlich lachen, weil in dem verdammten Land am Rande der großen Kalahari alles verkehrt war: Im Sommer war es Winter und im Winter Hochsommer; Schnee fiel nicht, wenn auch in den bitterkalten Nächten das Wasser in der Waschschüssel bis auf den Grund gefror. Und Tannenbäume? Du lieber Tod von Leyden, auf den Weihnachtskarten waren sie gemalt, die ihm seine piekfeinen Jungen samt ihren spillrigen Marjellen zum hohen Fest geschickt hatten. Aber guten Schnaps und kaltes Sodawasser hatte man auf Farm Epukiro-Ost und ein ansehnliches Konto auf der Southern-Africa-Bank Capetown, Filiale Rietfontein. Die Jungens in Pretoria, in der Stadt am Tafelberg und im fernen nebligen Oxford werden schmunzeln über die Schecks, die "der Alte" übersandt hat. Maria Magdala fragte Mauki, der etwas wacklig auf den
Beinen stand: "Und was hat dir der Baas zum Christfest geschenkt?" "Schnaps!" schnalzte der Buschmann. "Drei Becher voll . und schönes Lied Ma-usk-ksi vorgesungen!" Dann aber wurde er ernst und hockte ganz betrübt bei dem großen Hirsekessel nieder. "Schulden aber wieder größer geworden. 5 mal 5 beide Hände Pfund!" "Neue 50 Pfund zu den alten dazu?" ereiferte sich die Köchin. "Mauki, und du hast deine Daumen druntergedrückt?" Der nickte betrübt, während er sich auf den Fersen rechts und links wiegte. Maria Magdala schalt laut: "Mauki, du dummer Buschmann. Der Baas hätte dir 50 blanke Goldstücke auf die Hand zahlen müssen, so fleißig warst du und so glücklich war deine Hand in der Aufzucht. Der Baas ist ein Betrüger. Warte nur, wenn der Mister Inspektor nach Epukiro geritten kommt, dem will ich sagen: Sieh Maukis Lohnbuch durch . Und ich werde dabeistehen und sagen: ,Nicht geliefert, Sir! No, nicht empfangen!' Und du wirst mit dem Kopf nicken, so . und so ." Er mußte es üben, obwohl beide wußten, daß ein solcher Tag der Abrechnung nie kommen würde. Auch Maria Magdala war, wie alle Farmhelfer, ihr Leben lang nie aus den Schulden beim Herrn von Epu-kiro-Ost herausgekommen. Zornig warf die Alte noch ein großes Stück Hammeltalg in die brodelnde Hirse und schöpfte dann Mauki den ganzen Tin voll, den viereckigen Blechbehälter, der einstmals drei Gallonen Benzin enthalten hatte. Im Lohnbuch stand darüber: "Erhalten neues Eßgeschirr, verzinnt . 5 Schilling 5 Pence." Voll Benzin kostete der Kanister in Rietfontein nur 4 Schilling. Als das Jahr 1946 begann, erlebte Pitter Krischansen
eine unangenehme Überraschung. Eines Tages trieb an der Farm Epukiro-Ost ein Rehobother Bastard eine kleine Herde Karakulschafe vorüber. Er sah fast wie ein Weißer aus; doch die hängende Unterlippe und das Kraushaar verrieten seine Abstammung von Farbigen. Der Bur hatte das sofort bemerkt, als der hochaufgeschossene, hagere Mann bei ihm eintrat, sich sehr manierlich nach dem Brauch der Afrikander vorstellte und bat, man möge ihm gestatten, seine Herde und seine Ochsen aus dem Stauteich des Farmers zu tränken. Ja, er sei ein Rehobother mütterlicherseits. Sein Vater aber sei unverfälschten Blutes gewesen, ein Deutscher, und er trage auch seinen Namen Philipp Eekendeel. Die kleine Farm bei Rehoboth habe der jüngere Bruder übernommen. Er aber wolle mit seiner zahlreichen Familie das Glück hier am Rande der Kalahari versuchen. Als Kriegsteilnehmer - er habe bei Sollum und Benghasi, später auf Sizilien und in Italien gegen die Faschisten gefochten - sei ihm ein Landlos am Lutyahau zugeteilt worden, und dorthin seien sie mit Karakuls und Ochsen unterwegs, um die Weiden in Besitz zu nehmen. Krischansen ließ sich die Vermessungskarte zeigen und zog die Stirn kraus. Bisher hatte er sich als Herr aller Höhen und Täler gefühlt, die ost- und südwärts der Farm Epukiro-Ost lagen. Wenn genug Regen fiel, dann fanden seine großen Fettschwanzherden auch im Tal des Lutyahau reiche Weide. Zumessen hatte er sich diese Gebiete niemals lassen können, weil er schon die für eine Einzelfarm vorgesehenen 10000 Acres besaß. Er kratzte nachdenklich seinen wochenalten Stoppelbart und sagte teilnahmsvoll: "Junger Mann, Ihr rennt da glattweg ins Verderben. Alle fünf Jahre, wenn es gut geht, führt der Lutyahau sechs Tage lang etwas Wasser. Nein, da kann man keinen Sperr-
damm bauen. Völlig zwecklos. Grundwasser gibt es in dem hölldurchglühten Trockental auch nicht . Und dann die Löwen der Kalahari! Eure Karakuls werden ihnen zum Abendbrot höchst willkommen sein. Wie konnte Euch die Landkommission des Betschuana-Protektorats so unbrauchbaren Boden als Siedlungsland zuweisen? Wenn Ihr auf den Rat eines erfahrenen Trockenfarmers hören wollt, dann kehrt sofort um. Droben im Lande Kaukau ist noch manche Strecke frei." "Aber zu teuer für mich!" erwiderte der Rehobother lächelnd. "Die Löwen machen mir nicht bange. Ich habe verdammt gut schießen gelernt im großen Orlog. Mit dem Betschuana-Freiwilligen-Regiment bin ich ausgezogen, habe mir die vollen Bürgerrechte durch zwei schwere Verwundungen ehrlich verdient, lasse mich jetzt zur Versorgung abfinden mit dem Fetzen Land da . Kenne es so ziemlich. Vor etwa zehn Jahren habe ich auf Gold geschürft da drüben, natürlich keins gefunden, aber gemerkt, daß mit Karakulzucht allerlei am Lutyahau zu machen wäre. So, und deshalb bin ich jetzt da mit Frau und fünf Söhnen, mit zwei Vettern und ihren Weibern!" "Also, an meinem Glückwunsch soll es nicht liegen!" polterte Pitter Krischansen. "Und einen guten Nachbar sollt Ihr auch an mir haben, wenn Ihr einen Rat braucht oder ich Euch mal in schwerer Zeit unter einladen, doch ich weiß, Zeit ist für einen jungen Siedler Geld. Also, gute Reise!"
In den folgenden Tagen und Wochen ritt Baas Pitter so manches Mal auf die Grenzhöhen zwischen Epukiro- und Lutyahautal und spähte durch sein scharfes Fernglas nach den neuen Nachbarsleuten aus. Es war ärgerlich. Der
Januar hatte Regen gebracht, und jetzt im Februar gab es nicht nur Trockengewitter, nein, der Himmel öffnete seine Schleusen, und durch jedes elende Trockental plätscherten geschwätzige Bäche. Das Gras grünte zum zweitenmal, und die kahlen Dornsträucher schmückten sich aufs neue mit Blättern und Blüten. Die Jagdhereros wurden ausgeschickt. Sie berichteten, wie fleißig die Rehobother an ihren Staudämmen arbeiteten, wie tüchtig die Bastarde der Jagd waren. Bestimmt hatten die neuen Siedler Trockenfleisch das ganze Jahr hindurch; denn Wildebeeste, Hartebeeste und Springböcke gab es genug bis weit in die Kalahari hinein. Und von Sandgemsen wimmelte es nur so, so daß auch die streifenden Buschmannshorden mit ihren primitiven Jagdwaffen und -methoden runde Bäuche von der reichlichen Fleischnahrung bekamen. In den letzten Februartagen kam der neue Farmer Philipp Eekendeel auf einem Reitochsen herüber zu Pitter Krischansen, berichtete von den Fortschritten seines Hausbaus, zeigte sich sehr zufrieden mit seinem Besitz, bat aber dann den Nachbar, ihm einen oder zwei Sack Salzlecksteine zu überlassen. "Unvorsichtigerweise haben wir unseren Vorrat auf dem Wagen ohne Plache liegenlassen. Nun hat sie der Regen geleckt, und die Karakuls werden unlustig von dem Salzmangel. Wenn ich in Rietfontein meine Wildfelle und die ersten Persianer verkauft habe, gebe ich Euch die Lecksteine in natura zurück, oder . ich bezahle sie sofort zum gerechten Preis." Baas Pitter bedauerte außerordentlich. Er brauche seinen Karakuls kein Salz anzubieten, weil es hier auf seinem Farmgebiet genügend natürliche Salzleckstellen gebe. "Übrigens", fuhr er nachdenklich fort, "im Lutyahautal
stehen doch auch salzführende Schichten an. Natürlich, kennt Ihr das Felseneck, das auf den Karten Buschmannsgrab heißt? Gleich hier über das dritte Trockental hinab . da unten, die braunen Tonplatten, die enthalten genug Salz für tausend Karakuls auf hundert Jahre. Was, Eure Fettschwänze sind an Naturlecken nicht gewöhnt? Daß ich nicht lache! Was meine vertragen, wird Euren ebenso bekommen. Immer sparsam wirtschaften, junger Freund, nur so kommt man zu etwas!" Als der Rehobother wieder davongeritten war, rief der Baas Mauki, der zur Farm gekommen war, um Lecksteine für seine Herde zu holen. "Wer ist bei den Karakuls? Der alte Kikudu? Na, kann mal zwei Tage deine Arbeit machen. Die nächsten Schafe lammen ja erst in der kommenden Woche. Bring mir den Schleppochsen zum alten Farmschuppen hinüber. Laß dir von dem alten Gesteck, der Maria, zehn Aschkuchen geben. Genug Kost für zwei Tage. Heute mußt du noch auf den Marsch gehen, hinüber zu Buschmannsgrab am Lutyahau. Weißt du, wo es ist? Gut. Das übrige hörst du drüben am Schuppen." Pitter Krischansen fluchte bereits lauthals, da brachte Mauki endlich den Schleppochsen, den er auf der Weide eingefangen hatte. "Rasch, das Traggestell auf den Buckel geschnallt . da, das alte genügt. Und dann die beiden Säcke drauf festgezurrt. Drüber die Schutzdecke, damit man nichts von der Fracht sieht." Der Buschmann betrachtete nachdenklich die beiden Ballen. Quer über das Segeltuch liefen drei breite grellgelbe Streifen. Was in den dicken schwarzen Buchstaben da stand, konnte er nicht lesen; doch was ein Totenkopf mit gekreuzten Schenkelknochen bedeutete, das wußte auch Mauki. Und jetzt erinnerte er sich: Vor drei oder vier
Jahren waren gewichtige Aubaase auf der Farm erschienen, als aus der Kalahari flügellose Heuschrecken in ungeheueren Mengen herangerückt waren, um jedes Grashälmchen bis hinab in den Wurzelstock abzufressen. Damals schleppten Lastwagen solche gelbgestreiften Säcke heran, und dann waren Flugzeuge da, die das Vorfeld der Farm mit dem feinen Mehl aus den Säcken überstäubten. Es starben nicht nur die Heuschrecken; die Vögel, die dort nisteten, die Steinböcke und die Hartebeeste, sogar die Schlangen und die flinken Eidechsen krepierten an dem höllischen Gift - und ein ganzes Jahr lang durfte in diese Zone des Todes keine Herde getrieben werden. Ja, der Baas hatte sich manchen Sack von dem Teufelszeug in den alten Schuppen werfen lassen, nachdem der Vernichtungsfeldzug abgeschlossen war. Krischansen nahm immer, wenn es nichts kostete, und dieses Kalkarsen hatte man ihm gern überlassen, weil der Rücktransport mehr gekostet hätte, als das Zeug wert war. Und den mörderischen Staub sollte er dem alten Schleppochsen aufpacken? "Mach zu!" kommandierte der Baas. "Die Sonne sinkt bald, und wenn es dunkel geworden ist, mußt du dich auf die Reise machen. Du sprichst zu keinem von deinem Auftrag, sonst lernst du meinen Schambock kennen wie noch nie. Die ganze Nacht wanderst du, und wenn noch der Tau an den Halmen hängt, streust du das Mehl auf die Weide am Fuße von Buschmannsgrab. Ja, im Flußtal selber, wo die hellbraunen Tonplatten liegen. Warum? Dummer Kerl, dort haben sich Heuschrecken gezeigt, und der neue Farmbaas hat mich gebeten, etwas gegen das Gezücht zu tun. Nein, du wirst ihm nichts sagen. Es soll eine Überraschung für ihn sein. Den Schleppochsen
nimmst du nicht hinunter ins Tal. Die Säcke kannst du schon allein hinabbuckeln . und die leeren werden mir wieder zurückgebracht. Begriffen? Und . daß du keine Spuren hinterläßt!" Mauki hatte zu der wortreichen Erklärung seines Herrn nicht ein einziges Mal genickt. Forschend versuchte er ihm in die Augen zu schauen. Doch der Baas wandte sich um und rief über die Schulter zurück: "Los, mach zu! Hinter dem Schuppen gewartet, bis es finster ist, und dann auf den Pad! Klappt alles gut, sollst du ein Horn Schnupftabak als Sonderlohn haben." Der Buschmann fand den Weg zu der Grabhöhle in dem blassen Mondlicht wie am Tage. Aber er benutzte den Stachelstock nicht, den Schleppochsen anzutreiben. Er ließ ihn schlendern, wie er wollte. Mauki hatte zu denken . Mein Baas sagt: Streu da aus! Rehobothmann weiß nichts. Treibt Herde dorthin . gute Karakul, schöne Karakul. Fressen Gras, lecken Gift . dumme Tiere, ganz versessen auf alles, was salzig schmeckt. Stirbt Muttertier und Widder, stirbt Lamm um Lamm . arme dumme Karakul . armer Rehobothmann mit seinen Kindern. Baas meint Heuschrecken . pah, wenig Heuschrecken immer. Nie Mordgift genommen . warum heute? Hätte er doch mit der klugen Maria Magdala vor der Abreise sprechen können! Frierend zog er seinen Kopf zwischen die hohen Schultern. Nein, es war nicht der Nachtfrost des kahlen Hochlandes, er fror aus dem Innern heraus, aus dem Herzen. Die Buschmänner sagen: "Frost aus kaltem Magen!" Immer sah er nur das verschlagene Gesicht seines Herrn und hörte dessen heisere Stimme: "Daß du keine Spuren hinterläßt!" Und plötzlich wußte Mauki, was er tun müsse. Er gab
dem trägen Schleppochsen den Stachelstock zu spüren und schritt schneller aus. Als sich die Sonne über der Unendlichkeit der Kalahari erhob, begann er mit dem Ochsen den Felspfad hinabzusteigen, und dann schlenderte er an den braunen Tonplatten am Fuße von Buschmannsgrab vorbei, ließ das Tragtier tüchtig aus dem Lutyahau saufen, gönnte ihm geruhsame Weide und zog weiter auf die Farm der Rehobother zu. Gegen neun Uhr sah er sie die Karakulherde flußaufwärts treiben, hockte sich unter einen blühenden Dornbusch und wartete gemächlich ihr Herankommen ab. Eekendeel kannte den fleißigen Buschmann bereits. Er hatte ihn einigemal auf den Weideplätzen besucht und sich gefreut, wie sorgsam Mauki mit den ihm anvertrauten Karakuls umging. "Was bringst du, Mauki?" fragte er ihn und wies auf den bepackten Schleppochsen, der sich im schütteren Gras träge hingelegt hatte. "Hat Bur Krischansen inzwischen Lecksteine gefunden?" "Kein Leckstein drin!" Der kleine kornhäutige Bursche zerrte die Deckplache von den Säcken und wies auf die gelben Streifen und den drohenden Totenkopf. "Baas sagt, Heuschrecken bei euch. Mauki vergessen, wo. Du, Baas Rehoboth, sag, wo schlimm-schlimm Mehl gestreut werden muß!" Eekendeel las "Kalkarsen", wurde unter der sonnverbrannten Haut blaß. "Das sollst du bei uns streuen? Etwa gar bei Buschmannsgrab?" "Jajaja!" schnalzte der Junge, der sich plötzlich wieder zu erinnern schien. "Richtig, dort bei der Brauntonplattenweide. Alles streuen, gleich früh. Zu spät heute . morgen machen, wenn Tau noch an Halmen. Oder selber machen?"
"Gib das Gift her!" Der Rehobothmann sprach ganz heiser. "Und das hat dich dein Aubaas geheißen, das Kalkarsen über die Salzlecke zu streuen?" "Da ist keine Salzlecke, da bloß schlechte Tonsteine, aber gutes Gras. Karakul ist dummes Tier, frißt Giftmehl ebenso wie Lecksteine. Jajaja, Heuschrecke tot, Springbock tot, Karakul tot . schlimm-schlimm Mehl!" Der Rehobothmann hatte inzwischen seine Vettern her beigewinkt und redete aufgeregt auf sie ein. Mauki rührte sich nicht, als sie die Säcke vom Traggestell hoben und zur Seite schleppten, sie unter einem überhängenden Felsen bargen und dann einen ganzen Stapel von Steinplatten drüberhäuften. Eekendeel kramte aus seiner Satteltasche einen prallen Tabaksbeutel hervor, fügte seine eigene Tabakspfeife mit dem buntbemalten Tonkopf hinzu, endlich noch das Luntenfeuerzeug und drückte alles Mauki in die Hand. "Du warst immer ein guter Freund von uns, Mauki! Du solltest den schlechten Baas auf Epukiro verlassen und zu uns ziehen!" Der Buschmann schüttelte den zottligen Kopf. "Ich kann nicht kommen, Baas Rehoboth. Mauki hat soviel Schulden bei Baas Krischansen . 5 mal 5 alle Finger Pfund. Immer arbeiten und immer mehr Schulden . schlimmes Leben für Mauki!" "5 mal 5 alle Finger . das sind ja 250 Pfund! Betrügt der dicke Gauner so seine besten Arbeiter?" "Wir haben alle Schulden . müssen immer bei Baas auf Epukiro-Ost bleiben. Wer fortläuft, den fangen Jagdhereros und Hetzhunde . und dann Schambock, viel-viel Schambock. Nicht sitzen und nicht liegen .!" Eekendeel reichte ihm die Hand. "Du hast mir geholfen.
Du wahrer Bruder von Lutyahau-Leuten. Wirst du Baas Krischansen alles ins Gesicht sagen, was hier gesprochen wurde, wenn ich dabei bin?" Mauki schüttelte den Kopf: "Farbig Zeugnis gilt weißem Mann nichts. Du mußt meinem Baas alles sagen, dann rede ich auch, jajaja. Aber gut, wenn Polizeireiter dabei." "Bist ein kluger Bursche. So werden wir es machen. Und dann muß er deine Schulden streichen und dich freigeben. Am Sonntag bin ich auf Epukiro-Ost!"
Der Besuch bei Pitter Krischansen verlief dann freilich ganz anders, als Eekendeel erwartet hatte. Die beiden Polizeireiter der Betschuana-Protektorats-Schutzgarde hatten dem ausgezeichneten Whisky auf Epukiro-Ost schon reichlich zugesprochen und begrüßten den Rehobother lärmend von der Veranda des Farmhauses aus. "Schwein gehabt, Eekendeel! Auf was für verfluchte Einfalle doch so rachsüchtige Buschmänner kommen können! Klaut dieser höllverfluchte Mauki einfach zwei Sack Kalkarsen, um eure Karakulherde zu vergiften. Na, Aubaas Krischansen hat so gründlich mit dem Lumpenhund abgerechnet, daß er noch nicht wieder vernehmungsfähig ist!" Der Rehobother schwang sich aus dem Sattel, riß seine Büchse aus dem Gewehrfutteral, lud durch und stieg breitbeinig die Stufen empor: "Sergeant Miller, Sergeant Grosse, seid Ihr im Dienst oder auf einer Sauffahrt? Wo ist Pitter Krischansen? Wo ist Mauki?" "Pitter holt eine superfeine Flasche, Mauki kühlt sich den Buckel und Allerwertesten bei Maria Magdala. Wir werden ihn nachher in Eisen legen und mitnehmen nach Rietfontein, um ihn von da nach Mafeking in Marsch zu
setzen. Wird wohl aber kaum dort ankommen. Pitter hat eine zu harte Hand gehabt. Verständlich, wenn man sich überlegt ." Grau war das Gesicht des Farmers vom Lutyahau geworden. "Wollt Ihr damit sagen, hier sei Recht gesprochen worden, ohne meine Zeugenaussage abzuwarten? Wenn ich mich selbst auch noch zu den Rehobothern zähle, mein Wort gilt wie weißen Mannes Wort. Ich klage Pitter Krischansen an ." "Aber Mann, Eekendeel, alter Kamerad aus dem großen Orlog!" lärmte Sergeant Crosse. "Immer mit'm Kopp durch die Wand wie bei Sollum! Was hast du für Beweismittel?" "Zwei Sack Kalkarsen!" "Die der Buschmann hier aus dem alten Speicher gestohlen hat." "Sagt Krischansen. Weiter: Die Aussage Maukis über seinen Auftrag, das Gift auf die Tonplattenweide zu streuen." "Nicht gerichtsgültig! Ein landloser Buschmann kann nicht gegen einen weißen Mann zeugen - wegen angeborener Lügenhaftigkeit und defekter Moral!" "Verdammt! Die Moral des armen Kerls steht himmelhoch über der Krischansens. Hat er mich nicht belogen, als er von Salzvorkommen an Buschmannsgrab sprach, als er den Besitz von Lecksteinen bestritt?" "So'n kleiner Irrtum kann jedem unterlaufen, Eekendeel. Was spielst du mit der Büchse? Nieder den Lauf . weg!" Im letzten Augenblick gelang es Sergeant Miller, dem Rehobother die schwere Büchse zu entwinden. In der Tür zum Farmhause lehnte mit schlotternden Knien der Besitzer von Epukiro-Ost. Aus den zitternden Händen fielen
ihm zwei Flaschen. Erst als er sah, wie die beiden Polizeireiter des wütenden Nachbarn Herr geworden waren, stammelte er: "Gefällt mir . gefällt mir . Mich auf eigenem Grunde mit angeschlagener Büchse zu begrüßen! Miller, Crosse, ist das nicht Mordanschlag . Mordversuch?" Der eine brummte: "Höchstens Versuch zu einem Versuch und als solcher nicht zu verfolgen. Mann, Eekendeel, komm, setz dich! Hast du'n Sonnenstich?" Der Mann aus dem Lutyahautal begann krampfhaft zu lachen. "Krischansen, für'n gemeines Stück Fleisch wirst du in der ganzen Gegend gehalten, von Rietfontein bis zu den Sambesifällen. Aber so verludert und verkommen, wie du dich jetzt zeigst . nicht in meiner schwärzesten Stunde hätte ich so über dich denken können. Wo ist Mauki?" "Was geht das dich an?" Der Aubaas hatte sein Gleichgewicht wiedergefunden, als er sah, daß ihn vier harte Polizeifäuste in Schutz nahmen. "Mauki ist mein Vertragsarbeiter, der meiner Pflege anvertraut ist, keiner andern. Wenn ihr Rehoboths euch plötzlich auf eure Blutmischung besinnt . Aua!" schrie er, denn die Ohrfeige hatte blitzschnell getroffen. "Aua . verdammt, nehmt den Bastard in Haft!" "Fließt kein Blut!" brummte Sergeant Miller. "Also, ich habe die Sache satt, gestrichen bis an den Kehlkopfdeckel. Eekendeel, du reitest jetzt nach Hause, brav und friedlich! Befehl, Kamerad! Und Ihr, Baas Krischansen, könnt Klage beim Kronrichter wegen Ehrverletzung einreichen, aber ohne Berufung auf unsere Zeugenschaft. Verdammt in allen Ehren, die Backpfeife hat gesessen!" "Gut, ich reite! Aber nicht ohne Mauki!" entschied der Rehobother.
"Könnt ihn haben, wenn Ihr ihn aus der Schuld löst. 250 Goldpfund auf den Tisch, und ich überlasse Euch den Vertrag!" höhnte der Herr von Epukiro-Ost. "Oder gebt den langbeinigen Zuchtwidder für das Buschferkel!" "Sollt Ihr haben! Miller, Grosse, Ihr seid Zeugen. Für Mauki und seinen Kontrakt überlasse ich Mr. Pitter Krischansen den Zuchtwidder ,Schwarzwunder'. Papier her . und Mauki her! Das wollen wir schriftlich festlegen. Auf Euer Manneswort, Baas, pfeif ich!" Doch der Übergabevertrag konnte nicht ausgefertigt werden. Auf der Veranda erschien, als nach Mauki gerufen wurde, Maria Magdala, den triefenden Kochlöffel noch in der Hand. "Wer will was von Mauki? Der Baas? Soll sich schämen, wie er den guten Jungen zugerichtet hat. Als die Polizeireiter hier einritten, war Mauki nicht mehr zu halten. Zuerst auf allen vieren, dann schwankend wie der Dornzweig im Sandsturm, zuletzt schnellfüßig wie der Springbock sah ich ihn davonlaufen, hinaus in die große Weite . Und wenn der Baas jetzt die Hetzhunde oder die Jagdlümmel auf seine Spur setzt, meine Seligkeit will ich verlieren . dann vergifte ich Vieh und Mann und Maus! Amen!" Wenn die alte Hottentottin "amen" sagte, dann war das soviel wert wie der heiligste Eid. Krischansen meinte: "Schade um den Zuchtwidder! Immerhin, laßt den Buschmann laufen! Aus dem Vertrag aber entspringt er mir nicht." Eekendeel stieß die Büchse ins Schutzfutteral, schwang sich in den Sattel und erklärte: "Mein Angebot gilt weiter, wenn Mauki bei mir Zuflucht gesucht hat!" Dann ritt er von dannen. Er wartete eine ganze Woche und noch länger auf den
kleinen Buschmann. Aber Mauki ließ sich nicht sehen. Er war verschwunden - kontraktbrüchig, arbeitsflüchtig. Der zerschundene Mauki lag gar nicht weit von der Farm Lutyahautal in der Bilderhöhle bei Buschmannsgrab. Zwei seiner Stammesgenossen hatten ihn gefunden, als er, winselnd vor Schmerzen und wankend in seiner Schwäche, hier Zuflucht gesucht hatte, wo einst die großen Künstler seines Volkes die bewegtesten Jagdpartien an die Wände gemalt hatten. Wenn das kümmerliche Graswurzelfeuer aufleuchtete, sah der Mißhandelte, wie die Pfeile Löwen, Antilopen, Hartebeeste, sogar Elefanten trafen, wie die winzigen Buschmänner staubwirbelnd und sandwerfend Wildebeeste und Kalaharigemsen zu Tode hetzten, wie sie sich den Bauch füllten mit saftigem Fleisch und sich in feierlichem Beschwörungstanz schwangen. Seine beiden Gefährten, ein alter Buschmann und sein Sohn, sorgten gut für ihn, holten Wüstenmelonen und nahrhafte Grassamen herbei, breiteten über seine Wunden kühlende Pflaster aus gekautem Ried und zerriebenen Blüten, gruben für ihn süße Honigwaben der Erdbienen aus und fingen sogar müde Ammern und junge dumme Springböcke. Dafür durften sie aus der wundervollen Pfeife rauchen, solange der Tabaksbeutel noch Vorrat barg. Wenn der Magen voll war, erzählte Mauki von der mannigfaltigen Arbeit, die er geleistet hatte, und die beiden Helfer berichteten von dem wunderbar freien Leben in der unendlichen Wildnis der Kalahari. Jugenderinnerungen wurden in Mauki wach, da er selbst noch mit Wasserbohrer und Jagdsandalen, mit Keulenstock und Rohrpfeilen durch das Durstland gewandert war; Herr seiner selbst, keinem verantwortlich als nur dem knurrenden Magen und den
einfachen Gesetzen der Jagdhorde. "Ich ziehe mit euch", entschied er, "will nicht mehr weißen Mannes Diener sein . den großen Lutyahau hinab, bis er im Sande versickert . dann zum Ntwewe-See, auf dem die Salzschollen schwimmen . im Ngam-NgamGebirge kannte ich einstmals Weg und Steg . und am Solindu, dem großen Strom, löschen wir endlich allen Durst, den wir im Leben erlitten haben. Nein, Land Kaukau sieht mich nicht wieder, da kommen Polizeireiter und führen Ma-usk-ksi in Ketten nach Epukiro-Ost zum bösen Baas Krischansen. Ich bin jetzt frei wie ihr!" April war es geworden, Herbst in dem fernen Südlande, als Mauki mit seinen Gefährten an der Farm der Rehobother im Nachtdunkel vorüberschlich, kräftig wie nie, wenn, auch die Narben auf dem Rücken noch brannten. Als des alten Buschmanns Sohn - Tscha-tschi-ssko rief ihn sein Vater, und das bedeutet Abendwind - vorschlug, wenigstens ein Fettschwanzschaf aus dem Domkral zu stehlen, empörte sich Mauki: "Du bist ein schlechter Mensch. Rehobothmann hat mir die Hand gegeben, hat ,danke' gesagt, mir Pfeife, Tabak und Feuerwunder geschenkt. Dafür stehlen? Nein! Wir haben kein Rauchkraut mehr? Wenn Mauki geht und bittet, wir gleich große Ochsenblase voll Tabak und zwei Stierhörner voll Schnupfpulver geschenkt bekommen. Sicher, ich schwöre es . doch ich will nicht mehr betteln. Und diesen Leuten etwas stehlen? Nein!" Sie wanderten den ganzen Tag, fanden genug Wüstenmelonen und sogar einige dickblättrige Aloepflanzen, die den Hunger stillten. Als es dunkelte, scharrten sie sich ihre Sachen Schlafmulden in den Sand, umsteckten sie mit Dorngebüsch und ruhten im Glanz des Südlichen Kreuzes von den Mühen des Tages aus.
Am Morgen erblickten sie in einem Seitental eine alte Wildebeestkuh, die verdrossen an den langen Blattstriemen einer Welwitschie kaute. In der Kaffernsprache heißt dieses Tier, das wie eine Kreuzung von Rind und Pferd aussieht, Gnu, und so nennen es auch die Europäer. Die Afrikander aber haben es Wildebeest getauft. Mauki wies auf die äsende Großantilope. "Da viel Fleisch. Wir wollen Laufjagd halten." Der alte Buschmann schnalzte. "Bist du schon schnell genug dafür? Kannst du überhaupt Wildebeeste müde hetzen?" "Werde dritten Mann machen!" entschied Mauki. "Dann wird das Tier schon müde. Aufpassen: Tschatschi beginnt . bis zu dem fernen Dornbaum. Dort du, Freund, jagst bis zum Plattenkoophügel. Dort lauere ich und scheuche es zurück zum Dornbaum . Dann Tschatschi wieder." Er begann bereits die seltsamen Jagdsandalen aus hartem Bocksleder unter die Füße zu schnallen, daß die Vorderkrallen unter die Zehen zu liegen kamen. Dadurch federt der Läufer bei jedem Schritt, zugleich wirft er eine Staubwolke hinter sich, die das träge Tier zur Flucht scheucht. Das Wildebeest setzte sich erst in Trab, als der junge Buschmann auf dreißig Meter heran war. Mit der rechten Hand schleuderte er immer wieder Staub in die Luft. Wie eine Windtrombe hetzte er hinter dem plumpen Tier her. Nachdem Mauki die Verfolgung aufgenommen hatte, versuchte das Wildebeest mehrfach, sich niederzulegen. Es mochte den Bauch voller Futter haben, und nun wollte und mußte es wiederkäuen. Doch diesmal kam der Junge noch nicht dazu, den schweren Kugelstock zu handhaben. Erst als er, die Mittagsstunde war bereits erreicht, zum zweiten Male die Hetze aufnahm, stürzte das Wildebeest, und ehe
es sich wieder erheben konnte, zerschlug ihm der Buschmann Vorderbeine und Genick. Mauki hatte das Tier schon aufgebrochen, als seine Jagdgefährten bei ihm eintrafen. Schmatzend stopften sie die fetttriefenden Nieren und den zähen Lungenlappen in sich hinein. Dann schliefen sie ein wenig, bepackten sich nach dem Erwachen mit so viel Fleisch, wie sie schleppen konnten, schnitten sich Schurze aus der Haut und keuchten bis zu einem Felshang, wo sie ihr Lager aufschlugen. Drei Tage lang schwelgten sie in Fleisch und Fett, vergaßen nicht, etwas von der Beute, in lange Riemen zerschnitten, an der Sonne zu trocknen, und zogen erst weiter nach Osten, als die dicken Bäuche wieder abgeschwollen waren. Mauki rühmte die gute Kost. "Soviel Fleisch habe ich bei dem weißen Baas in zehn Jahren nicht bekommen. Freies Leben, gutes Leben. Wir werden immer Wildebeeste jagen. Dumme Tiere, schöne Tiere!" Aber in den nächsten Tagen zeigten sich nur Springbökke, Strauße und Hartebeeste, und diese Tiere waren durch Laufjagd nicht zu erlegen. Trotzdem hungerte keiner der Wanderer. Ununterbrochen schweiften ihre Augen umher, und sie sammelten alles, was ihnen den Magen füllen konnte. In diesem östlichen Teil des Lutyahautales floß kein Wasser mehr. Aber mit dem Wasserbohrer, dem langen Rohrhalm mit dem klug erdachten Bastfilter, konnten die Buschmänner genug Flüssigkeit aus dem Erdboden saugen, um den Durst zu stillen. Daß es meist etwas nach Soda und Salz schmeckte, störte die Trinkenden ebensowenig wie der bittere Geschmack der fleischigen Aloeblätter.
Die blauen Höhen des Ngam-Ngam-Gebirges waren immer näher gerückt, und eines Tages schlug Mauki vor, dieses Gebiet aufzusuchen. "Wildebeeste gibt es da massenhaft und . Gold im Sand. Ja, als ich Knabe war, ist weißer Mann mit mir dorthin gezogen. Hat viele gelbe Körner gesiebt . ist dann von Sandviper gebissen worden. Toten-Weißen-Mannes-Grab will ich suchen."
Das Ngam-Ngam-Gebirge liegt am Rande der großen Trockenzone, die wir Kalahariwüste nennen. Kahle Dornsteppe überzieht die Hänge. Manche Schluchten bergen Wäldchen. Den weißen Mann hat diese abgelegene Gegend bisher nicht zum Siedeln verlockt. Nur ab und zu wagen sich mutige Goldsucher oder unternehmungslustige Vanadiumschürfer in die Einöde. Schieß wütige Hochwildjäger erhalten für das Ngam-Ngam-Gebirge keine Abschußscheine. Nach dem Willen der Protektoratsverwaltung soll hier eines der größten Wildreservate entstehen, in dem die zum Aussterben verurteilten afrikanischen Großtiere eine Zuflucht finden. Die Buschmänner mit ihren primitiven Jagdmethoden können dem Wildreichtum keinen Schaden zufügen. Mauki und seine Gefährten erlegten wohl hier und da ein Wildebeest oder eine Gemse, im übrigen ernährten sie sich aber von den Erträgnissen ihrer Sammlertätigkeit, während sie durch die Berge und Täler schweiften, um TotenWeißen-Mannes-Grab wiederzufinden. Selbst aus den Bachsanden Goldflitter auszuwaschen oder Nuggets zu suchen, fehlte ihnen die Ausrüstung und auch die Geduld. Nur Mauki klaubte ab und zu einige gelbe Körner heraus, aber das konnten ebensogut funkelnde Schwefelkiese wie Golderze sein.
Fast zwei Jahre lang streiften die drei Buschmänner durch die Berge, stiegen auch zu dem großen Strom Solindu hinab, speerten Fische und tranken Wasser, als sei es der kostbarste Wein, fingen Schildkröten, sammelten Flußmuscheln, wichen aber aus dem Paradies, als streifende Jäger vom Stamme der Barotse auftauchten. In den Bergen war die Kost schmaler, aber das Leben sicherer, wenn auch das donnernde Gebrüll der Löwen die Mimosensträucher erzittern ließ. Der großköpfige Herr der Steppe aber fand genügend Futter unter den Tieren und brauchte sich nicht an die drei Menschen heranzumachen. Als sie eines Abends um das kleine Feuer hockten und sparsam Dornzweig auf Dornzweig in die Glut schoben, während die Gemskeule zischend am Bratspieß schmorte, begann der junge Tschatschi zu spotten: "Ich kenne klugen Buschmann, sucht immer Toten-Weißen-Mannes-Grab, findet es aber nicht, liegt sicher im Monde; oder er hat die Augen aus dem Kopf verloren, vielleicht auch ein klein bißchen geschwindelt. Jedenfalls habe ich genug von Ngam-Ngam. Ich wandere ins Land Kaukau, weiter noch, nach Tsumeb. Dort suche ich Arbeit. Tschatschi ist jetzt stark. Buschmann wird bei Kupferberg immer gesucht. Dort sind auch hübsche Khoi-Khoin-Weiber. Ich nehme eine, wiege Kinder .!" Mauki fuhr hoch. "Tschatschi, schlimme Lügenzunge! Ich kenne Toten-Weißen-Mannes-Grab genau. Aber wozu Goldsack suchen? Hier in den Bergen kann man schön frei leben, hier immer gute Kost für den Magen, kühles Wasser fürs Herz." Der junge Buschmann aber blieb hartnäckig: "Ich habe genug von Ngam-Ngam. Ich will Menschen sehen, brauche Tabak für Pfeife und Nase. Ich werde erzählen von
großer Fahrt durch die Kalahari in Tsumeb, in Grootfontein, in Otawi. Ich bin jetzt ein Mann und nicht mehr dummer Junge!" Und sein Vater erklärte: "Wo Tschatschi hingeht, gehe ich auch hin." Er wußte, daß in den Kupferminen des Otawi-Distrikts immer Arbeitskräfte gebraucht wurden, und die kleinen zähen Buschmänner waren als Schlepper in den Stollen begehrt, weil sie die allerniedrigsten Löhne erhielten. Und das will etwas heißen; verdiente doch ein kräftiger Ovambo, wenn er gute Häuerarbeit leistete, höchstens zwei Schilling je Schicht, wovon er dann noch Kost, Unterkunft und Arbeitskleidung bezahlen mußte. Vergeblich schilderte Mauki seine Erlebnisse als Kontraktarbeiter auf der Farm. In den beiden Buschmännern war die Sehnsucht nach Menschen erwacht, und sie würde sie den weiten Weg zurückführen, mochte er auch fast tausend Kilometer lang sein. Da die schöne Regenzeit gekommen war, beeilten sich die drei nicht, aus dem wildreichen Gebirge wegzukommen. Mauki war manchmal halbe Tage allein unterwegs; er fand aber immer wieder das kleine Lagerfeuer, an dem seine Gefährten rasteten. Eines Abends verkündete er, geschwellt von Stolz: "Morgen werden wir zu Toten-Weißen-Mannes-Grab gehen. Ich habe heute vom Berg aus die Schlucht gesehen. Da nehmen wir aus der Höhle den Ledersack und wandern nach dem Land Kaukau. Wir drei brauchen nicht Otawiminen. Wir werden reich sein, alle drei, sehr reich . jajaja!" Als am andern Tage die Sonne am höchsten stand, krochen sie durch die steilen Schieferhänge hinab zur Schluchtsohle. Doch dann begann Mauki ratlos zwischen
den Felswänden hin und her zu irren. In den vielen Jahren hatten Sand- und Staubstürme, Felsstürze und Muren ganze Dünen und Hügel aufgeschüttet. Darunter mußte irgendwo der Zugang zu der Höhle liegen, in welcher der unglückliche Goldsucher seinen letzten Schlaf hielt. Auch das Bächlein war im Schutt versunken. So tief sie auch ihre Wasserbohrer durch den lockeren Sand stießen, nirgendwo konnten sie einen Tropfen des belebenden Nasses hochsaugen. Tschatschi und sein Vater drängten, die Schlucht wieder zu verlassen, um der höllischen, austrocknenden Glut zu entkommen. Doch Mauki wollte das nicht hören. Er scharrte hier, er wühlte dort, kroch witternd über Felsgestein, und auf einmal schrie er auf. Zwischen abgestürzten Felsblöcken dunstete es kühl und feucht herauf. Wie eine Schlange wand sich der nackte Mann durch die schmalen Spalten, und dann dröhnte sein Jubelruf "Ku-u-u-u" aus dem Berginnern. Zuerst reichte er eine Kürbisschale voll Wasser herauf, dann eine plumpe Kreuzpicke, und endlich zwängte er sich selbst wieder ins Sonnenlicht und schleppte hinter sich einen knochenharten, gewichtigen Ledersack her. Die sorgfältige Verschnürung war schwer zu lösen. Schatten begannen bereits die Schlucht zu füllen. Endlich konnte Mauki seine Hände in den Beutel senken, und er hob sie hervor, gefüllt mit mattfunkelnden Goldkörnern und Goldflittern. "Das 100 mal 2 ganze Hände Pfund und noch viel mehr!" behauptete er stöhnend und schnalzend vor Freude. "Dafür kaufen wir einen Ratterwagen, Buschmann braucht nicht mehr zu laufen.., kaufen Karakulfarm . großen Sack Tabak . 2 mal ganze Hände Stierhörner voll
Schnupfpulver . und Schnaps . viel-viel-viel Schnaps!" Seine Gefährten lachten über diese Zukunftspläne, probierten mit Fingerspitzen und Zähnen das seltsame Metall, ließen auch einiges unachtsam in das Gestein rollen, worüber Mauki ernstlich zornig wurde. Sorgsam verschnürte er den Tragsack wieder und tauchte dann erneut hinab in die Höhle. Soviel Kürbisschalen voll Wasser, wie seine Freunde trinken wollten, reichte er herauf; endlich erschien er selbst wieder, glitzernd vor Nässe, als ob er gebadet hätte. Ein stark verrostetes Waidmesser brachte er noch aus der Unterwelt mit, das er Tschatschi schenkte. Dann wanderten sie nach Norden, um dort die Wasserader zu suchen, die in der Höhle ihren Ursprung hatte. Obgleich sie an diesem Abend nur eine Handvoll gerösteter Grasfrüchte zu verzehren hatten, waren sie vergnügt und übermütig. Immer wieder mußte Mauki erzählen, was man alles für das Gold kaufen könne, und wenn es ihnen gar zu unwahrscheinlich erschien, dann lachten sie lauter als das Hyänenpärchen, das ihr Lager umschlich. Zwei Tage lang schleppte Mauki allein den Goldsack. Dann aber, als ihren Lauf- und Verfolgungskünsten eine fette Wildebeestkuh zum Opfer gefallen war, fertigten sie aus der Haut plumpe Tragtaschen und verteilten die Last. Oben auf die Goldkörner legten sie ihren kümmerlichen Mundvorrat; denn der Flüchtling von Epukiro-Ost hatte gewarnt: "Weißer Mann liebt gelben Dreck mehr als eigenes Leben. Wenn er weiß, daß wir Gold in den Taschen haben, schießt er uns tot. Nichts sagen vom goldenen Mist!" Sechsmal schien der sich immer wieder rundende Vollmond auf die drei Wanderer, da hatten sie auch die Omahekewüste durchquert, hatten viel Gastfreundschaft bei
armen Jagdhorden im Lande Kaukau gefunden, waren sogar in den Besitz dreier ölverschmierter Overalls gekommen, die sie gegen ihre Lederschurze und Jagdmäntel eingetauscht hatten. Bei einem syrischen Hausierer handelten sie lange um drei Hüte, breitrandige Burenfilze. Als ihm Mauki drei Prisen Goldstaub bot, lehnte er ab; er wollte sie nur gegen Bargeld abgeben. "Goldhandel ist streng verboten. Gold wird nur in Grootfontein bei der Südafrika-Bank angenommen. Ihr müßt dorthin wandern, Pfunde und Schillinge bekommt ihr dafür, dann könnt ihr bei mir die schönen Hüte kaufen . Klar?" Nein, klar war es Mauki durchaus nicht, wie er den Goldschatz in Geld verwandeln könnte. Da mußte er also mit weißen Männern verhandeln, und sie würden ihn fragen, woher er das Gold habe. Jeden Abend übte er mit seinen beiden Gefährten, wie er bei dem Verkauf Rede und Antwort stehen würde. Aber erst als der unheimliche Pfiff der Eisenbahn von Grootfontein her zu ihrem Lagerplatz drang, hatte er einen besonders guten Einfall. "Ich werde nicht alles Gold hinbringen . nur eine Tasche voll, hier, eine Hosentasche voll, und werde dazwischen meine Glitzersteine mischen . mich ganz dumm stellen. Ihr wartet draußen am Riviere auf mich." Keinen Augenblick lang kam ihm der Gedanke, daß ihn seine Gefährten um den Schatz betrügen könnten; und sie dachten auch wirklich nicht daran. Sie fragten, was sie machen sollten, wenn er nicht zurückkehre. Er beschied sie kurz: "Warten! In die Omahekesteppe gehen und warten, bis ich wiederkomme. Aber das Gold nicht wegwerfen." Am andern Tag, es war fast in der Mittagsstunde, stand
Mauki vor dem Schalter des Goldaufkäufers in der Grootfonteiner Filiale der Südafrika-Bank. Während der langen Wanderung durch die Kalahari und die Omaheke hatte er beinah alle englischen und afrikanischen Wörter vergessen. Mit Gesten unterstützte er seine Silben: "Verkaufen . Gold . jajaja!" und kramte aus seiner Overalltasche die gelben Körner hervor. Der Mann hinter dem Schalter griff nach Probierschale und Säureflasche, schob nach kurzer Musterung die meisten Schwefelkiese beiseite, füllte den Rest in die Schale, goß eine Flüssigkeit darüber und verfolgte mit Stirnrunzeln das Aufbrausen und Kochen. Dann wurde die Säure abgegossen, der Rückstand über einer Spiritusflamme getrocknet und gewogen. "Fünf Ounce troy", stellte er fest (etwa 150 Gramm), "geschätzt 20 Karat fein ." Er rechnete auf einem Blatt Papier. "Macht genau 24 Pfund! Einverstanden?" Der hagere Buschmann nickte eifrig, obgleich er den Zahlbegriff kaum kannte. Als ihm einige Geldscheine hingeschoben wurden, bettelte er: "Ich will nicht Papier . blanke Schillinge!" "Von mir aus!" knurrte der Goldaufkäufer, dessen zufriedene Miene ausdrückte; wie gut er das Geschäft getätigt hatte. Er zählte eine solche Menge von Schillingmünzen auf ein Zahlbrett, daß es vor Maukis Augen zu flimmern begann. 480 Silberstücke stopfte der Buschmann in seine Taschen. Der Mann hinter dem Schalter grinste. Plötzlich fragte er: "Hast du noch mehr Gold? Das Gold ist zwar schlecht, aber ich nehme es gern!" "Jajaja!" erwiderte Mauki, der unruhig von einem Fuß auf den andern trat. "Jajaja, viel-viel-viel Gold! Ich kom-
me morgen wieder." "Soll mich freuen! Na, mach schon, Khol-Khoin! Kauf dir eine anständige Kluft. Die Lumpen stinken ja sieben Meilen gegen den Wind!" Als er wieder draußen auf der Straße stand, machten sich gleich einige Müßiggänger an ihn heran, Buschmänner, Hottentotten und Ovambos, als witterten sie das Silber in seinen dickgeschwollenen Taschen. "Du mußt einen ausgeben, Bruder Khoi-Khoin! Hast wohl die Bank geplündert, hehehe? Also mach zu!" Doch Mauki marschierte, ohne auf die Anbiederungen etwas zu erwidern, stracks auf eine Wellblechbude los, vor der eine mannshohe Soldatenfigur stand zum Zeichen, daß hier Tabakwaren zu haben waren. Ein Horn Schnupftabak kaufte er und ein großes Paket Plattentabak. Die vier Schillinge taten ihm nicht leid. Dann stapfte er weiter, beguckte sich die Läden und Kneipen, um sich später zurechtzufinden, und schlenderte zum Riviereufer, wo er seine Wandergefährten wußte. Die Grootfonteiner Tagediebe waren zu faul, in der glühenden Sonnenhitze über das weite Sandfeld zu wandern; sie blieben schimpfend zurück. Tschatschi und sein Vater hatten es sich unter einem Dornbaum bequem gemacht. Sie wollten es nicht fassen, als Mauki Horn und Tabakpaket mit Gönnermiene vor ihre Füße warf und sich dann vergnügt kichernd zu ihnen hockte. "Wir sind reich!" prahlte er und holte eine Handvoll Schillingstücke nach der andern aus allen Overalltaschen. "Da, für Tschatschi, da, für dich ." Er zählte nicht, er verteilte einfach, bis seiner Schätzung nach jeder genug hatte. "Und nun schnupfen wir!" Genießerisch schnaufend füllte er seine Stupsnase mit dem scharfen Staub; die
beiden andern taten es ihm gleich, und dann wälzten sie sich unter Niesen und Spucken auf dem Boden, um die Prozedur gleich zu wiederholen. Die Tabakspfeife des Rehobothers war längst den Weg alles Irdischen gegangen, deshalb begannen die drei, eine Buschmannspfeife zu bauen. Sie hoben ein trichterförmiges Loch aus, bohrten von den Seiten drei Schilfrohre hinein, füllten die Öffnung mit einem Gemisch von zerriebenem Gras und Plattentabak, legten den glühenden Zunder obendrauf und schmauchten los, lang auf dem Bauche liegend. Zwischen den genußvollen Zügen belehrte Mauki seine Gefährten: "In Grootfontein sind viele Bummler! Gleich schreien sie: ,Gib aus, Khoi-Khoin! Gib aus: Tabak, Kost, Schnaps!' Ich habe nichts gegeben, ihr dürft auch nichts geben. Wenn die Schillinge sehen, werden sie uns alles wegnehmen. Der weiße Mann sagt: ,Feine Kluft kaufen!'. Nun, ja! Wir gehen dann nach Grootfontein, kaufen uns bunte Hemden. Auch Hosen? Nein! Aber gute Kost essen . Ich weiß, wo alte Frau für Khoi-Khoin Fleisch bratet, Hirse kocht. Wenn wir Schillinge.geben, wir alles bekommen! Vielleicht auch Schnaps? Nein! Schnaps wir nicht trinken in Grootfontein. Kaufen, dann zum Riviere gehen, verstecken und dann schlucken . ah!" Nach der Schnupf- und Rauchorgie machten sich die drei auf den Weg nach dem Steppenort, den sie zur Stunde des Sonnenunterganges erreichten. Sie staunten über die trübseligen Karbidlampen ebenso wie über die großen elektrischen Strahler, die wie riesige Monde über dem Bahnhof und der Kupferschmelze hingen, am meisten aber über die vielen Menschen in allen Farbschattierungen zwischen dunkelstem Schwarz und lichtestem Weiß, die
durch die Straßen schlenderten. Ängstlich hielten die drei Freunde die Felltaschen mit ihrem Reichtum fest, und als Mauki kühn bei einer alten Hottentottin eintrat, die in einem Stacheldrahtgeviert so etwas wie eine Imbißstube betrieb, folgten seine Freunde nur zögernd und hockten sich bescheiden dicht am Drahtzaun auf ihre Felltaschen. Doch Mauki schritt forsch zu dem Rost und den Kesseln, wählte drei gewichtige Batzen bratenden Rindfleisches, ließ einen großen Tin mit duftendem Hirsebrei füllen, nahm noch drei große Kalebassen voll trübem Kräuterbier und sah die geschäftige Köchin fragend an. Sie hob drei Finger, und er legte, ohne zu handeln, soviel Schillingstücke vor sie hin. Fröhlich lachend warf sie ihm noch einige heiße Aschkuchen auf das Tragblech und nickte ihm freundlich zu. "Du großreicher Mann, mußt immer zu Anna Bethlehem kommen. Viel Kost, gute Kost!" Und doch schaute sie ihm aufmerksam nach, beobachtete, wo er Platz nahm, und gab einem lungernden Jungen einen Rippenstoß, damit er auf Tragblech und Kalebassen achtgebe. Tschatschis Vater bekam Gliederzittern, als er soviel Kost auf einmal erblickte. Achtungsvoll verneigte er sich vor dem Bringer und zückte sein kurzes Buschmannsmesser: "Das ist wie ein Traum. Da nimm meine Schillinge . Kost viel besser als dummes Geld!" Mauki prahlte: "Du kannst dir für deine Schillinge ein ganzes Jahr lang so dicke Kost kaufen; jajaja! Jetzt essen wir wie weiße Herren: Mundvoll Fleisch, Mundvoll Brei, Mundvoll Bier!" Doch er selbst hielt dann diese Kulturregel nicht ein, sondern schlang und schluckte, bis er nicht mehr konnte. Großmütig bot er einigen gierigen Zuschauern die Reste
der Prasserei an, und die hatten in weniger als einer Minute das Tragblech abgeräumt. "Willst du Sirupkuchen?" fragte der Junge, der das Eßgeschirr zurückgeschafft hatte. Tschatschi geriet in Spenderlaune. Er warf dem Frager zwei Schillinge zu, und eine Minute später lag vor den drei Satten ein wahres Gebirge safttriefender Krapfen. Sie waren schon ziemlich altbacken, der Brattalg schmeckte ranzig. Stöhnend vor Sattheit, nannte Mauki endlich leise das Zauberwort, als sich der bedienende Junge zu ihm neigte: "Schnaps . viel-viel Schnaps!" Der sah sich um, ob ein Lauscher in der Nähe sei, zuckte die Schultern und erwiderte: "Verboten! Oh, streng verboten! Wieviel gibst du?" "Zwei Hände voll Schillinge!" . Wortlos streckte der seine schmutzigen Finger aus, nahm das Geld und verschwand, um nach einer Weile mit einem Bündel Zuckerrohrstengel zurückzukehren. "Schnaps drin versteckt!" flüsterte er. Mauki fühlte die kühle Flasche und gab dem kleinen Kellner sogar noch einen Schilling als Botenlohn. Dann erhob er sich, überließ die Sirupkuchen den hungrigen Bettlern und ging mit seinen beiden Gefährten, wankend vor Sattheit, von dannen. Während sie dem Ortsausgang zuschritten, wurden sie von der Veranda der Bar "Pykky Paris" aus aufmerksam gemustert. "Townton, da schleicht ja der Buschmann, von dem ich soeben sprach. Also, wie gesagt, nach der genauen Analyse: Gold mit starkem Iridiumgehalt, was ja für den Preis der Nuggets kein Fehler ist. Das muß von einem unbekannten Fundort stammen. Wäre für meinen Kredit nicht schlecht, wenn ich eine ertragreiche Mutung belegen könnte." "Der Mann kommt morgen wieder. Da werden wir mal versuchen, ihn zum Singen zu bringen. Überhaupt, ganz wild scheint er nicht zu sein, kann einige englische und burische Wörter. Schätze auf weggelaufenen Kontraktarbeiter, der sich lange in der Kalahari herumgetrieben hat. Am andern Morgen. Ach, wie brummten drei Buschmannsschädel von dem schlechten Fusel, den sie in ihren Sandkuhlen am Riviere geschluckt hatten, bis sie der Schlaf überwältigt hatte. Es war noch ein Rest in der Flasche, aber Mauki schüttete ihn in den dürstenden Sand und begann eifrig die halbvertrockneten Zuckerrohrstengel zu kauen. Als er wieder klar denken konnte, entwarf er den Tagesplan. "Ihr wartet hier auf mich . hebt meine Schillinge auf. Ich werde heute zwei Taschen voll Golddreck an den weißen Mann in der Bank verkaufen. Jajaja . Und für euch kaufe ich schöne bunte Hemden, Kost, aber keinen Schnaps mehr. Schlecht für Buschmänner . Felltaschen vergraben wir dort beim Dornbaum. Komme ich allein, gut! Wenn weiße Männer bei mir sind, stellt euch dumm. Dann kennen wir uns nicht!" Beide Werkzeugtaschen des Overalls füllte Mauki mit
groben Nuggets, dann schlenderte er langsam dem Städtchen zu. Auf der Straße zur Bank merkte er sich eine Wellblechbaracke, in der Kleidungsstücke zu haben waren, auch die begehrten Hemden und sogar Burenhüte in allen Tönen der Farbskala. Der Goldaufkäufer hinter dem Schalterfenster begrüßte ihn: "Na, alter Freund, noch was ausgebuddelt? Zeig mal her!" Als er die großen Goldkörner sah, viele stumpfkantig und drusig, pfiff er schrill durch die Zähne. Mit einem Sieb trennte er den beigemischten Sand, tupfte nur hier und da mit dem Säurestopfen auf die Nuggets und griff zur Goldwaage. Ehe er das Gold in die Waagschale schüttete, trat ein anderer weißer Mann herzu, ließ das gelbrote Metall über seine Handfläche rollen und fragte von oben herab: "Und wo gefunden?" "Ngam-Ngam-Berge!" quetschte Mauki zwischen seinen klappernden Zähnen hervor. "Weit-weit-weit weg. Sechs Vollmonde bin ich gelaufen bis Grootfontein, Aubaas!" "Du heißt?" wollte der Weiße wissen. "Ich, Mauki . jajaja, Mauki bei Baas Krischansen auf Epukiro-Ost." "Was du nicht sagst! Beim dicken Pitter gewesen? Karakul gepflegt?" "Jajaja, gut für Karakul . Jetzt kaufe ich selber Karakul . Mauki versteht viel davon. Deshalb Goldendreck gesucht." Der Aufkäufer hatte inzwischen sein Wiegegeschäft beendet und die Rechnung abgeschlossen. "Mauki, wirst ein reicher Mann! 12 Unzen diesmal, 20 Karat fein . 50 Pfund, weil du es bist . Einen ganzen Beutel voll Schillinge, einverstanden?"
Mit zitternden Händen griff der Buschmann nach dem rotgesiegelten Münzsack, doch so schnell kam er nicht fort. "Moment!" sagte der zweite Weiße. "Kannst zwei solche Geldsäcke verdienen, wenn du uns dahinführst, wo du das Gold gesammelt hast. Brauchst nicht zu laufen. Ratterwagen habe ich . In zehn Tagen sind wir schon im NgamNgam." Mauki schüttelte den Kopf: "Dort ist kein Goldendreck mehr. Nur noch Sand und Stein. Jajaja, hätte selber mehr gesucht. Aus, nix ." "Na, wir reden noch mal darüber!" meinte Townton. "Versauf das Geld nicht, Mauki! Und wenn du wieder was hast ." "Noch viel-viel-viel!" stammelte dieser und war froh, daß man ihn laufen ließ. Er merkte nicht, wie zwei zerlumpte Ovambos sich an seine Spur hefteten und ihm auf Schritt und Tritt folgten, so hatte ihn der große Reichtum betäubt. In der Bank stellte Townton fest: "Den lasse ich nicht mehr aus meinen Fängen. Übrigens, daß die offiziellen Goldaufkäufer der Südafrika-Bank so grob verdienen, hätte ich nicht gedacht. Mit 500 Schilling mehr wäre der Buschmann noch ganz anständig betrogen worden." Der Mann hinter dem Schalter grinste. "Was meint Ihr, was ich an Pacht für den Platz bezahle. Das will erst eingebracht werden. Toi-toi-toi, bisher hat es ja gelangt. Und wenn Ihr Mauki hopp nehmt, mit 200 Pfund möchte ich mich gern an der Expedition beteiligen!" Der Buschmann hatte schwer zu schleppen, als er zum Riviere hinabstieg. Der geschickte syrische Händler hatte ihm nicht nur die buKten Hemden und drei schneeweiße
Burenhüte aufgehängt. Als er sah, wieviel Schillinge dieser Urmensch besaß, hatte er ihn nicht eher aus dem Laden gelassen, bis er noch drei Reithosen aus Kord, drei Schilfleinenjacken mit Reißverschlüssen und entsprechende Staubmäntel gekauft hatte. Mit dem großen Kleiderbündel auf der Schulter suchte Mauki die Garküche auf und bepackte sich dort mit einem gebratenen Schaf, einigen Kalebassen Kräuterbier, einem alten Papiersack voll Aschkuchen; er erhielt sogar noch zwei Packungen Zigaretten und eine Schachtel Zündhölzer als Zugabe, nachdem sich die Hottentottin aus dem Schillingssack bezahlt gemacht hatte. Tschatschi und sein Vater führten einen Freudentanz auf, als die Packen unter der Dornakazie abgeworfen wurden. Mauki ließ sich schweratmend in dem dürftigen Schatten nieder, zündete sich, bestaunt von den beiden andern, eine Zigarette an und berichtete schnaufend und hustend: "Alles nur für uns Brüder. Ich habe einen großen Plan: Wir werden uns gut anziehen, den Bauch vollschlagen, und dann fahren wir mit Feuerbahn nach Windhuk und mit Ratterwagen nach Rietfontein. Dort werden wir wieder gelben Golddreck verkaufen, schöne Karakul suchen und zum guten Rehobothmann am Lutyahau ziehen. Er hat mir die Hand gedrückt, jajaja!" Sie waren mit allem einverstanden, nachdem sie die Prachtgewänder angelegt und den knurrenden Magen befriedigt hatten. Zwei zerlumpte Ovambos durften die reichlichen Reste verzehren, und sie gaben gern Auskunft, wie man die Eisenbahn benutzen könnte. Sie erbettelten noch einige Schillinge, und dann zogen sie, ehe die kurze Abenddämmerung hereinbrach, wieder ab nach dem lichterfunkelnden Grootfontein.
Das Glück berauscht und läßt das Mißtrauen immer mehr schwinden. Die drei Buschmänner hatten es nicht so eilig, sich der Feuerbahn anzuvertrauen. War es auch nur eine jämmerliche Schmalspurbahn, ihnen erschien sie als eine höllische Erfindung, und die Furcht ließ sie Tag für Tag ihre kleinen Feste unter dem Dornbaum am Grootfonteiner Riviere feiern. Inzwischen tickten die Morseschreiber zwischen Rietfontein, Mafeking und Grootfontein. Radiogramme wurden ausgetauscht, und als die Woche zu Ende ging, war Sir Townton gegen Zahlung von 100 Pfund Inhaber des Arbeitskontraktes, einst vor vielen Jahren abgeschlossen zwischen Baas Pitter Krischansen auf Epukiro-Ost und einem Buschmannsjüngling, genannt Mauki, 1946 aus der vertraglichen Verpflichtung entflohen unter Zurücklassung eines Schuldkontos von fast 300 Pfund nach der Währung der Südafrikanischen Union. Der, den das alles anging, begann unruhig zu werden. Die Bettlerovambos kamen täglich pünktlich wie die Sonne und redeten viel von der schönen Eisenbahnfahrt durch das große Damaraland und das Erongogebirge, fragten beim Abschied in der Dämmerstunde zu eindringlich nach dem Abreisetermin, waren zu freundlich und zu kriecherisch. Mauki entschied: "Wir haben Schillinge genug! Ich fahre erst einmal allein, um zu sehen, was Rehobothmann sagt. Dann komme ich euch holen, gut zwei Vollmonde später hier beim Dornbaum. Ihr wandert heute nacht noch weg, dorthin, wo euch keiner kennt. Auch ihr habt genug Schillinge, braucht kein Gold zu verkaufen. Die neue
Tracht bündelt ihr und tragt sie erst in Tsumeb." Die beiden Buschmänner nickten eifrig und machten sich gleich auf den Marsch. Mauki band unter seinen Staubmantel die Felltasche mit den Goldkörnern und schritt im Morgengrauen Grootfontein zu. Wäre er nicht barfuß gegangen, man hätte ihn beinah für einen weißen Baas halten können. Das versicherten ihm lebhaft die beiden Ovambos, die ihn dazu verführten, vor der großen Reise ein ausgiebiges Frühstück mit ihnen zu teilen. Der eine stopfte soviel in sich hinein, daß ihm schlecht wurde und er schleunigst verschwand. Der andere begleitete ihn zum Bahnhof. Als Mauki seine Fahrkarte lösen wollte, trat ein langer graurockiger Polizeireiter auf ihn zu, legte die rechte Hand auf die Schulter des kleinen Mannes und sagte: "Mauki von Epukiro-Ost? Ich nehme dich kraft der Gesetze der Südafrikanischen Union in Haft wegen Kontraktbruchs und Arbeitsflucht und . Verdammter Buschmann, ich schlage dir die Knochen kaputt, wenn du auskratzen willst!" Der schwere Schambock traf den Zurückweichenden zweimal mit voller Wucht im Genick. Mauki wurde es schwarz vor den Augen, und er sank auf die Knie. Als er wieder Herr seiner Glieder war, stierte er stumpf und wortlos auf die Stahlfessel, die das rechte Handgelenk mit dem linken Knöchel verband. Nur gekrümmt hinkend konnte er den Weg zur Polizeistation zurücklegen. Dort erwartete ihn der neugierige Herr aus der Südafrika-Bank, hielt in den Händen ein schmales blaues Heft, das Mauki sehr bekannt vorkam, und sagte zu dem Polizeirichter: "Euer Gnaden, unverkennbar der hier genannte Kontraktarbeiter . aber zu aller Sicherheit soll man ihm
die Fingerabdrücke abnehmen. Hier im Lohnbuch hat er immer durch Abdruck beider Daumen quittiert." Und als das geschehen war, gab es keinen Zweifel mehr, und der aus Kontrakt und Schuldverhältnis entsprungene Buschmann Mauki von der Farm Epukiro-Ost wurde dem Kontraktbesitzer Edward Townton kraft des Rechts der Südafrikanischen Union und der einschlägigen Bestimmungen des Protektorats übergeben. Der neue Baas ließ die Fußfessel lösen, behielt aber die Stahlkette zum Arm in der Hand und führte seine neue Arbeitskraft weg. Die beiden zerlumpten Ovambos saßen auf der Verandatreppe des Bungalows und begrüßten den Gefesselten mit stürmischem Gelächter. Sie machten sich sofort über ihn her und beraubten ihn all der schönen neuen Sachen. Das war der Preis für ihren Verrat gewesen. Townton ließ alle Taschen umdrehen und grinste über das ansehnliche Häufchen Schillinge. "Eingezogen zur Bezahlung deiner Schulden, Mauki! Und hier die Felltasche ." Er stieß einen schrillen Pfiff hervor, als er das Waschgold entdeckte. "In einem ordentlichen Arbeitsverhältnis im Auftrage des Arbeitgebers erworben, ist also mein Besitz, verstanden?" Der Buschmann sagte kein Wort. Er starrte nur trübe vor sich hin. Der eine Ovambo warf ihm einen zerlumpten Fellmantel hin, der andere einen Lederschurz. Er ließ alles liegen, hockte nackt und zitternd auf der Veranda. "Sperrt den Burschen in die Garage!" befahl der Weiße. "Ich weiß, wie man ihn kirre kriegt. Höre, Mauki, führst du mich zur Goldstelle in Ngam-Ngam, dann bist du sofort frei. Verstanden? Überlege es dir gut bis heute abend!" In der Pykky-Bar feierte der neue Herr mit dem
Goldaufkäufer das gute Geschäft. "Mann, 100 Pfund bezahlt und gute 300 nur für das Waschgold bekommen! Das nennt man ein Geschäft! Wenn der Vogel jetzt noch das Singen kriegt und uns die fündige Stelle zeigt, verdammt und zugenäht . Das ist der wertvollste Buschmann, der jemals durch die Omaheke gekrochen ist. Wenn Pitter Krischansen erfährt, welchen Goldvogel wir ihm ausgespannt haben, trifft den alten Gauner der Schlag!" "Aber wir müssen freundlich zu Mauki sein!" mahnte der andere. "Solche Naturburschen können trotzig werden wie verprügelte Bulldoggen. Krepieren lieber, als daß sie noch einen Laut von sich geben." "Na-natürlich!" Der neue Baas stieß schon etwas mit der Zunge an. "Kei-keine Sorge! Werde eine Flasche Negerrum mitnehmen, damit ich ihm das Zungenbändchen löse. Bis Harry oder Tsau brauchen wir eine knappe Woche mit dem alten Jeep ." "Und dann kann es nicht mehr weit sein, bis wir den richtigen Fleck erreichen. Garantie, Townton, wo soviel Grobware lag, muß noch reichlich Staub im Sand stecken, und der Muttergang kann nicht fern sein. Aber den Mund halten! Sonst brechen morgen schon alle Bummler von Grootfontein und Tsumeb nach den neuen Goldfeldern auf!" Die beiden Bettelovambos hatten sich den Tag über damit vergnügt, dem Buschmann in der Garage angst zu machen. Nicht einen Schluck Wasser hatten sie ihm gereicht. Als Townton mit dem Rum und einigen Aschkuchen erschien, fand er ein wimmerndes Häuflein Unglück vor, das zu allen seinen Vorschlägen ja sagte. Natürlich, von Tsau aus, der letzten Siedlung vor den Ngam-NgamBergen, könnte man am schnellsten die Schlucht mit dem
Goldsand erreichen. Selbstverständlich, über Harry würde man fahren. Und der Ratterwagen könnte über die Dornsteppe bequem bis an den Fuß des Gebirges gelangen. Einen Tag aber müßte man dann marschieren, jajaja. Wasser gäbe es dick in den Felstälern, und Wild könne man schießen, alle Tage Wildebeeste und Hartebeeste und Springböcke, von den zierlichen Gemsen gar nicht zu reden.
Der Monat war noch nicht zu Ende gegangen, da knieten die beiden Weißen bereits an dem dünnen Wasserfaden, der Toten-Weißen-Mannes-rab entströmte, und wuschen schwitzend und schimpfend Schaufel auf Schaufel Sand aus dem Riviere, um den Goldgehalt überschlägig festzustellen. Mauki hockte auf den Fersen dabei und machte große Augen zu dem wunderlichen Treiben der Grootfonteiner. "Verdammt knapp, Staub und Nuggets!" stellten beide fest. "Hier können wir jahrelang schuften, ehe wir auch nur auf die Unkosten kommen. He, Mauki! Du Faultier, hast du nun gelernt, wie man Gold wäscht? Morgen machst du die Arbeit, verstanden?" "Hier ist kein Golddreck! Weiter oben in den Bergen. Dort kann man es mit den Fingern aufklauben." Die Männer sahen hinüber zu den zerrissenen Felsflanken, den breiten Schuttströmen, den ungefügen Blockgeschieben. Nein, mit dem alten Jeep konnte man den Weg nicht schaffen. Die Fußwanderung würde sehr mühselig sein, dazu die sengende Glut der Trockenzeit. "Gibt es da auch Wasser?" fragten sie den Buschmann. Der nickte kräftig. "Wasser viel! Ma-usk-ski kennt die Quelle, aus der Wasser für Riviere herkommt."
Beim abendlichen Lagerfeuer wurde beschlossen, schon am kommenden Morgen die Wanderung anzutreten. Als Mauki seine drei Trockenzwiebäcke verzehrt hatte, wurde er mittels der Stahlkette an das Hinterrad angeschlossen. Er scharrte sich seine Schlafmulde und dachte an die kommenden Tage - so stark dachte er daran, bis er jeden seiner zukünftigen Schritte genau sah. Zwei Tage krochen die drei durch die Felsenwildnis, dann behauptete der Buschmann, sie wären nun in dem Goldtal. Townton warf sich in den schmalen Schattenstreifen am Fuß der Felswand, blickte sich mißtrauisch um und fragte: "Und wo ist die Quelle?" "Gebt mir den Wassersack. Ich hole Wasser!" Die beiden Weißen waren so erschöpft, daß sie alle weiteren Vorsichtsmaßregeln außer acht ließen. Mauki hatte sich ja die ganze Zeit über vernünftig benommen. Er schien sich mit seinem Los abgefunden zu haben. Es dauerte lange, bis er zurückkam. Der Hanfsack war prall vom kühlen Naß. Als sie sich satt getrunken hatten, legte der Buschmann seinen längst leergerauchten Tabaksbeutel vor sie hin: "Und da Goldendreck mitgebracht!" Townton schüttete den Inhalt auf seine Handfläche: Perlige und drusige Nuggets waren es; die kleinsten wogen mehr als ein Gramm, die größten zehn und darüber. Er sprang auf. "Woher hast du sie? Da schau, Mann, wir haben es geschafft! In der kurzen Zeit einfach mit den Fingern aufgehoben! Unbeschreiblich reich muß das Goldvorkommen sein. Los, Buschmann, zeige uns die Fundstelle!" "Morgen früh", schnalzte Mauki. "Ich zeigen Gold, und dann werde ich ein freier Mann sein! Gehe dann zu den Khoi-Khoin ins Land Kaukau. Geben Sie mir den Frei-
brief, Baas!" "Klar, kriegst du, wenn wir erst das Feld abgeräumt haben . sagen wir in drei, vier Monaten . Vollmonden, verstehst du?" Mauki schüttelte den Kopf. "Sie haben gesagt: ,Gold zeigen, dann frei!' Baas genau so gesagt. Jajaja!" Townton griff nach dem Schambock. "Verdammter Kerl, ich fetze dir den letzten Quadratzoll Haut vom Buckel, wenn du uns nicht gleich zur Fundstelle führst! Her mit der Pfote! Wollen dich doch lieber ganz sicher haben!" Und höhnisch klickte die Fesselschelle um das linke Handgelenk. Seufzend trottete Mauki vor den beiden her, bis er den Talgrund erreicht hatte. Der Sand glühte, die Felsen an der Ostseite des Tales strahlten noch dörrende Hitze aus, obwohl sich die Sonne zum Untergehen neigte. Der Buschmann bückte sich gelegentlich, zeigte gefundene Goldkörner, wies die Schlucht empor: "Überall Gold. Sie müssen gucken!" Und da sahen sie es selbst, gelb und rötlich blinkte es zwischen den Sandkörnchen. Die beiden Weißen warfen sich auf die Knie nieder, krochen hierhin und dahin und sammelten das kostbare Gut in ihre Taschen. Townton ließ sogar die Kette los; doch Mauki hockte sich nur in den Schatten eines großen Felsblockes und sah augenzwinkernd dem Tun seines Herrn zu. Der triumphierte. "Mann, wenn wir das erst gewaschen haben! 10000 Unzen pures Gold schätze ich!" "Mehr!" sagte der Teilhaber. "Das langt für uns beide . Schau, hier ein Stück Tellurit, das noch im Quarz sitzt. Der Muttergang muß also ganz in der Nähe sein. Mauki wird ihn suchen!"
"Mauki! Mauki!" rief Townton. "Verdammter Stinker, wo steckst du? Herkommen! Oder soll ich den Schambock nehmen?" Doch da war kein Mauki mehr, und der Prügelstock ließ sich auch nicht finden. "Wird zum Lagerplatz zurückgekrochen sein!" trösteten sich die beiden Goldsucher. "Da, dort liegt es ganz dick!" Und sie scharrten, bis sie in der hereinbrechenden Dämmerung nicht mehr Kiesel und Nugget unterscheiden konnten. Am Lagerplatz war Mauki auch nicht. Der Wassersack lag dort, noch halbgefüllt, die Proviantbeutel unangetastet, der schwere Rückenpacken, den der Buschmann geschleppt hatte, die Jagdbüchsen - nichts fehlte! Nur der getreue Helfer, der abends immer Dornholz und Wasser herbeizuschaffen wußte. "Wird schon noch kommen!" tröstete sich Townton. "Wo sollte der Kerl in dieser Wildnis hin. Wird froh sein, wenn er bei uns seinen Zwieback findet."
Mauki hatte die Nacht in der Quellhöhle verbracht. Am Morgen kroch er heraus, verbaute den Zugang sorgsam mit Bruchsteinen und Rollblöcken und stieg mit einem gefüllten Wassersack hinauf in eine schattenspendende Nische der jähen Felswand, von der aus er das Tal übersehen konnte. Die Kette klirrte an seinem Arm. Behaglich errichtete er einen Beobachtungsstand. Seine graubraune körnige Haut verschmolz mit dem Schatten der Felsen; das Funkeln seiner Augen war schon auf hundert Schritt Entfernung nicht mehr zu sehen. Leise sprach er mit sich selbst, und nur eine magere Felsechse hörte 5 zu, neugierig ihren schmalen Kopf dem großen Gast zuwendend. "Wort ist Wort und Lüge ist
Lüge. Der weiße Herr sagte: ,Mauki Goldfeld zeigen, dann frei zu anderen Khoi-Khoin gehen, sofort frei . jajaja .' Drunten bei Toten-Weißen-Mannes-Grab hatten sie gebrüllt: ,Mit Schambock werden wir dir die letzte Haut zerfetzen . drei Vollmonde noch!' Nein, Ma-usk-ksi würde keine zwei, nicht einen Vollmond mehr bei den weißen Männern bleiben . heute schon weg, genau nach Wort . Goldfeld da, Ma-usk-ksi frei!" Am Morgen hörte er in seiner Felskluft, wie die weißen Männer schrien: "Mauki! Mauki! Verdammter Höllenhund, Wasser brauchen wir! Wasser . kaum zum Morgentee langt es noch! Mistkäfer, verfluchter! Vierzehn Tage wirst du nicht sitzen können, wenn wir erst unsere Schambocks an dir ausprobiert haben!" Der Buschmann ließ die braune Felseidechse über seine körnige Handhaut laufen und lachte leise. "Viel Wasser für den, der weiß, wo es fließt. Keinen Tropfen für blinde Schnecken. Nehmt nur den Schambock und prügelt Wasser aus Stein, aus Sand . nicht mehr auf meinen Rükken!" Doch dann sah er mit verwundert aufgerissenen Augen, wie sie auf allen vieren über das Sand- und Kieselfeld im Trockenfeld krochen und gierig den gelben Dreck in die nachschleppenden Säcke sammelten. "Dümmer als Hartebeestkuh!" schimpfte er. "Die weiß, wann sie satt ist, legt sich in Schatten und kaut. Weiße Männer groß, aber dumm, sehr-sehr-sehr dumm!" Es stäubte aus dem Talgrund. Sie, die weißen Herren, handhabten mit viel Geschick die Goldwaschschüsseln, packten sie voll Sand, ließen den durch das Tal streichenden Glutwind die leichten Sande hinwegtragen, wenn sie den Inhalt in den Luftstrom warfen, und brüllten vor Freu-
de über die reiche Ausbeute ihrer Trockenwäscherei. Mauki schüttelte nachdenkend seinen Kopf. "Goldendreck ist wertvoll in Grootfontein oder Tsumeb. Hier im Ngam-Ngam Wasser viel mehr wert!" Und er zog den Wassersack aus dem dunklen Winkel seiner Zufluchtsstätte und nahm einen sparsamen Schluck. Mauki saß und sann. Das Gebot der Wildnis verpflichtete ihn, jedem Leidenden Hilfe zu gewähren. Wenn er aber mit seinem beinah noch vollen Wassersack hinabsteigen würde zu den beiden Goldgierenden . wie würden zwei Schambocks auf seinem zernarbten Rücken tanzen und sein kleines Wissen um die Rettung herausprügeln. "Armer Buschmann und reicher weißer Herr geschieden, als gutes Wort schlimme Lüge wurde!" knurrte er und sah weiter zu, wie der Reichtum der Goldgräber wuchs. Doch als die Nachmittagsglut in die Schlucht einfiel, beobachtete der kleine Buschmann, wie die beiden weißen Herren dort unten etwas anderes zu suchen begannen als die Gelbdreckkörner. Sie krochen durch die Abbruche, gruben mit Hacke und Spaten ein tiefes Loch in die Kiesbank der Schlucht, schrien wieder: "Mauki! Gut Freund . bring uns Wasser, verdammter Lauser! Bist ja frei, Ehrenwort, Junge!" Und dabei standen sie gebückt unter der Last ihrer Fellsäcke, in die sie den goldenen Segen gesammelt hatten, starrten nach den gluthauchenden Felswänden, hockten unter einem schattenspendenden Überhang nieder und quälten die kochende Luft mit ihren Hilferufen: "Mauki . Mauki! Wasser . Wasser .!" Das Gebot der Wildnis hatte den kleinen Buschmann ebenso gelehrt, hart wie die Felsen des Ngam-NgamGebirges zu sein. Er war selbst traurig darüber, daß er nicht hinabsteigen konnte, um den Verdurstenden aus
seinem Wassersack eine Labe zu geben. Aber er sah auch in dem flirrenden Licht der sinkenden Sonne die wild und fahrig geschwungenen Peitschen aus Nilpferdhaut, und er sah und hörte, wie die beiden da unten übereinander herfielen, weil einer noch zwei Schluck Wasser in der Feldflasche hatte und sie mit dem andern nicht teilen wollte.
"Schwer-schwer-schwer Durst . jajaja!" stellte Mauki fest, mitten in der Nacht, als von unten der süßliche Geruch der Verwesung bis zu seinem Zufluchtsort hinaufschwang. "Sir Townton und der andere . kein Schambock mehr - nur noch Schweigen im Tal." "Ein Langmesser und zwei Kugeln!" stellte er sachlich fest, als er zu neuer Wanderung aufbrach, einen Augenblick verhielt, um sich wenigstens einen Fellsack mit dem goldenen Dreck über die Schulter zu schwingen. "Ein Buschmann wird nie verstehen, warum weißer Mann so dumm!" Er ging mit der schweren Last zum Parkplatz des Jeep zurück. Im Werkzeugkasten fand er eine Feile und befreite sich von Armschelle und Kette. Die Reservekanister goß er über das Fahrzeug aus, handhabte lange sein Luntenfeuerzeug, und dann verging die Kunst der weißen Aubaase in einer gewaltigen Qualmwolke dreißig Meilen vor den drohenden Steilwänden des Ngam-Ngam. Über die nördlichen Ausläufer der Kalahari zum Lande Kaukau wanderte, gebückt unter der Last eines unförmigen Fellsackes, Mauki. Er konnte nur halbe Tageslängen zurücklegen, aber sein Herz war erfüllt von großen Hoffnungen. Er hatte es sich in hundert Nächten der Rast überlegt: Wie die beiden Unrecht hatten, weil sie ihr Versprechen nicht hielten - ob nicht alle Herren Unrecht
haben, wenn sie schreien: Hund, verdammter, tu das . oder der Schambock! Eines Tages, was rechnet die Zeit in eines Buschmanns Leben, hatte er auch Tschatschi und den alten Vater wiedergefunden. Sie brachten die Felltaschen voll Gold in das armselige Buschmannsdorf mitten in der Omaheke. Mauki schüttete seinen Fellsack aus, und die Freunde staunten über die Masse des gelben Drecks. "Bist du wieder bei Toten-Weißen-Mannes-Grab gewesen?" fragte Tschatschi neugierig. Ma-usk-ksi lachte geringschätzig und zeigte sich hoch überlegen. "Das ist falscher Name; nichts wißt ihr, was die Zeit macht. Nein-nein-nein, nicht mehr Toten-WeißenMannes-Grab, nun heißt es zu allen Zeiten Drei-ToteWeiße-Männer-Grab . Ja, im Ngam-Ngam . wo denn sonst? Viel Goldendreck mitgebracht. Jajaja . Schlimm, warum weiße Herren zu gute Buschmann so . weiß nicht, was ich sagen soll ." "So gemein!" stellte Tschatschi fest. Denn er hatte in den Kupferbergwerken von Otawi gearbeitet und neue Wörter gelernt. "Mauki, und jetzt gehst du wieder nach Grootfontein?" Da schüttelte der weit Gewanderte seinen Krauskopf und lachte. "Ma-usk-ksi nicht nach Grootfontein und nicht nach Rietfontein, auch nicht nach Omaheke. Ins Land Kaukau ziehe ich oder noch weiter, wo der Buschmann nicht unter dem Schambock . jajaja, Land muß zu finden sein. Ich weiß es jetzt - wir wollen suchen!" Und vielleicht ziehen die drei Buschmänner noch durch die Unendlichkeit der südafrikanischen Einöden, um die Freiheit zu finden, die mehr wert ist als Goldendreck und dicke Kost.
