Summer Sports Cricket I really love cricket! There are eleven players in a team. In England we only play it in the summer - when it's sunny! Cricket isn't just popular in England. People also play it in Australia, India, Pakistan and South Africa. Some people think it's boring. An international cricket match lasts ' for five days! My favourite team is the English national team.
Rugby My favourite sport is rugby. I love watching it and I enjoy playing it. I watch a rugby match every Saturday with my dad. My favourite team is the Welsh rugby union team. In Wales rugby's only a winter sport. The season lasts from September to April. There are fifteen players in a rugby team and a match only lasts for eighty minutes. It's a bit rough but I love it. Ice hockey Baseball I'm mad about baseball. It's our national sport. There are nine players in a team. I go to baseball matches with my mom. Lots of American families go to the ball games together. Sometimes a game lasts all day. There are thirty Major League baseball teams. My favourite team is the San Francisco Giants. Simone is from San Francisco in the USA.
I'm Canadian so I just love playing ice hockey. All Canadians really like ice hockey. My favourite team is the Ottawa Senators. There are six players in an ice-hockey team. They wear special clothes and helmets, but it's still quite a rough game. It's also very fast. In winter I often play ice hockey after school. Nicole is from Ottawa in Canada.

My mum makes my lunch box every day. I always know what's in it - healthy food! There are always things like fruit juice, yoghurt, an apple or a banana, some nuts and a brown bread sandwich with some cheese in it. I really like my lunch and I know it's good for me.fl usually do sport after school so I have a banana at 4 o'clock to give me energy. Young people need a balanced diet w i t h different sorts of healthy food. For example, they need carbohydrates f r o m bread, pasta and rice f o r energy. Fruit and vegetables are i m p o r t a n t too - they contain vitamins and minerals and these keep you healthy. Protein makes you strong and you get it f r o m t h i n g s like meat, fish and eggs. Dairy fat - f o r example, m i l k and cheese - is good because it makes your teeth strong. But remember too much fat is very unhealthy so fast food is bad for you - and it con ^ a lot of sugar which is also unhealthy.

Animals in danger Is time r u n n i n g out for the fastest animal on Earth? In 1900, there were over 100,000 cheetahs in Africa, but in the year 2000, there w e r e only 15,000. Cheetahs are now in danger because they are losing their habitat. They are extinct in at least sixteen countries of Africa.
The cheetah The cheetah is a member of the 'Big Five' cat family. (The other four are the lion, tiger, jaguar and leopard.) It is the fastest animal on Earth and can run at over 100 kilometres per hour. It lives in grasslands and forests in Africa and Asia. The cheetah has brown fur with black spots and a white stomach. Of all the big cats it has the longest legs, the smallest head and the thinnest body. The word 'cheetah' comes from the Hindu word 'chita' meaning 'spotted one'. Cheetahs usually eat smaller animals like gazelles, small antelope and mice, but they sometimes attack larger animals like zebras.

My favourite band Writing tip Capital letters, commas, colons and semi-colons • We always start a new sentence with a capital letter and put a full stop at the end. He's in a band at school. • We use commas to divide items in a list. I like pop, reggae, soul and hip hop music. • We use a colon to introduce a list, an explanation or a quotation. There are two singers in the band: Charlie and Matt. • We use a semi-colon to separate different parts of a sentence about the same subject. McFly are a popular band; Green Day are popular too.

mws It isn't boarding and it isn't inline skating! It's rock climbing!
Growing fast J The sport of rock climbing is growing more and more popular. Why? It's exciting, it's quite easy to learn and you can now do it indoors or outdoors! When you're learning (or when it's cold and raining!) you can do it at your local sports centre. When you know how to do it, you can go rock climbing outdoors on real rocks at special activity centres.
Take it slowly J Jake Jackson, a rock climbing instructor in London, says, 'Many people think that rock climbing is difficult and dangerous. It isn't. Just take it slowly, have some lessons and listen carefully to your instructor. Most young people learn quickly and easily. When you can climb, the next step is to learn abseiling - that means you go down the mountain on a rope
Safety first To do rock climbing safely, you need a good pair of climbing shoes or trainers, a helmet, a special harness, strong ropes and a qualified instructor!

Millie was on holiday with her American cousin in the USA. Her Aunt Cassie, Uncle Mike and cousin Owen lived on a small island called Rock Island. Millie loved being on the island. It was great for swimming and diving. There was another house on the island. It was Dr Holstein's house. It was called Tower House.
It was time for bed. Millie went up to her room. Then she saw something strange from her window. She ran to Owen's room. 'Owen! Wake up! Come and look!' There was a line of small lights. It came from the sea up to Tower House. 'How weird! Let's go and look,' said Owen. They went down to the beach, hid behind some trees and watched.
There were four men. They had cages with animals in them, an Arctic fox, a cheetah, a baby white tiger and a wolf. 'What are the men doing with the animals?' asked Millie. T don't know,' said Owen, 'but they're all endangered animals!'
Very quietly Millie and Owen followed the men. The men took the cages down into a cellar in Dr Holstein's house. Suddenly Owen stepped on a branch. 'Crack!' 'Watch out. They heard us!' Owen and Millie started running. Millie fell but Owen didn't see her. 'Take the girl and put her in the cellar!' said one of the men.
Five minutes later Owen went back to Tower House. Through an open window he heard the men. 'OK. I want the fox for my zoo. How much is it?' 'The fox is $500 and the wolf is $1000.'
