Life is fun for Cheery and Dearie. They are happy dogs. Cheery and Dearie like it best when the sky is clear. “See? The sun is smiling!” Cheery cries. “It fills me with sheer joy!” Dearie sings. 2

Life is gray for Dreary and Bleary. They are grim dogs. Dreary and Bleary like it best when it rains. “See? The sky is filled with tears,” Dreary moans. Bleary just groans with a weary sigh.

Cheery and Dearie read funny tales. They like to hear silly riddles. “What is a sweet deer?” Cheery asks. “A dear deer!” Dearie cries. Her ears flap as she laughs. 4

Dreary and Bleary read sad tales. They like to hear cheerless stories. “Years ago, three weary friends . . . ” Bleary starts his tale. “I hope they cry at the end,” Dreary says. Her ears sag as she mopes.

This is where the Learys live. A stream is on the west side. A garden is on the east side. One year brings many changes to the Leary place. 10

It is winter. Snow blankets everything. It hangs on the trees like white earrings. The stream is covered with sheer ice. Greer and Meara Leary put on heavy coats, mittens, and earmuffs. They clear a space and make a cheery snowman.

The sky is dreary. It is time for spring rains. Greer and Meara fear it will rain hard. They are glad it is just a gentle drizzle. Greer and Meara put on raincoats. They splash in puddles near the stream. 12

The garden wakes up. Plants poke through the dirt. Grass pops up like little green spears. Leaves fill the trees. Greer and Meara put on t-shirts. They help Mom tend the garden. Dad gets his shears and trims shrubs.

Summer ends. Leaves turn deep red and cheery yellow. Nippy winds blow leaves off the trees. Greer and Meara put on jeans and sweaters. They make leaf piles and dive in.
