Blair Fox is scared. He is planning a party, but his lair is messy. He is just not that careful about keeping it neat. Blair gives his pal Clare Hare a buzz on the phone.

“Clare, my lair is messy,” Blair tells her. “And my party is tomorrow! Will you dare stop in and help me?” Clare has fine taste and flair. She tells Blair, “I will help repair your lair. I will be right over.” 3

Clare marches up the stairs and in the lair. She stares at the mess inside. “Blair,” she says. “We must get started right now. I will help you prepare your lair for the party.” Clare strips the lair bare. “Now we can start,” she says.

Clare really has flair. She gets a big square rug. She gets a horsehair couch and matching chairs. She gets a table made from rare lumber. 5

Clare and Blair work day and night. At last, they are done. Clare pats her hair. She takes one last peek at the lair. She sprays mist to freshen the air. “That is much better,” she declares. Clare and Blair finish with minutes to spare. The bell rings. The party crowd steps in. 7

Meg Mare cries. “Blair, you have real flair! Your lair is quite nice!” Blair stares at Clare. Then he winks. The repair of his lair is their secret.

Laird has not visited a county fair before. The sun is hot on his bare arms. He feels a thrill in the air. Laird hopes to have fun. 10
