Commentary Get to Know ISO 50001
Master Energy Management ISO 50001 is a new, voluntary energy management standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that provides industrial facilities with an internationally recognized framework to manage and improve their energy performance. Currently, 33 U.S. facilities — including industry leaders 3M, Bridgestone Tire, Dow Chemical, Eaton and Schneider Electric — are implementing an energy management system that conforms with ISO 50001. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the standard addresses the following: • Energy use and consumption. • Measurement, documentation and reporting of energy use and consumption. • Design and procurement practices for energy-using equipment, systems and processes. • Development of an energy management plan and other factors affecting energy performance that can be monitored and influenced by the organization.
The DOE notes that ISO 50001 does not include prescriptive energy performance goals but instead serves as a framework a company can use to set and pursue its own goals for improving energy performance. The DOE plans webinars and a toolkit. It has already compiled testimonials from Owens Corning and others that describe the value for their facilities. Want to learn more? Visit the DOE’s frequently asked questions (FAQs) page at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/office_eere/faq.html. And, while you’re waiting to learn more about the standard and how to implement, you can use our product guide to find more efficient process equipment.

ImageWave uses single-mode high power microwave energy that feeds directly into the product and then reflects directly back with minimal wasted energy. Because of its design, the system achieves heat distribution and focus in a smaller footprint area than industrial microwave systems that use the multimode standard. The system’s DynoFlect instrument and control automatically tunes in real time to maintain set power delivery and system parameters. Ferrite Co. Inc. • (800) 854-1466 • www.ferriteinc.com
Solidaire dryers have high-speed, adjustable paddles that create an agitated, dense, thin layer of material against the jacketed vessel wall. A jet-rotor design allows injection of gas or liquid through the paddles into the thin layer of material flowing along the wall of the unit. Operating modes include indirect, direct and a combination of both. The unit can process a range of heat-sensitive materials, from free-flowing solids to wet cakes and slurries, as well as materials whose flow characteristics change during drying. The dryer also can handle fine, low-density particles that might be fluidized in mechanically or pneumatically agitated equipment. Bepex International LLC • (612) 331-4370 • www.bepex.com

Three-Pass Heater Thermal fluid heater employs a fired burner and two helical coils, one inside the other, to provide up to twice the life of other three-pass heaters while providing the required amount of thermal input. Its lower flux rate means that its helical coils will be subjected to much lower thermal energy, especially radiant energy, than is usual in a three-pass heater. This also means that thermal fluid flowing inside the coils will have a much lower film temperature. To achieve the lower flux rate, the heater is somewhat larger than a three-pass heater with higher flux rates. Heatec • Please see our ads on pages 2 and 48 (800) 235-5200 •

Cut your fuel train down to size Big flows. Small footprint. Designers everywhere are downsizing their fuel trains using the new modular gas safety shutoff valves from ASCO. Optimized valve geometry delivers extremely high flow rates and very low pressure drop. Simply connecting two valves together yields a significantly smaller double valve footprint. And those high flow capabilities mean designers can now select their gas train components for smaller size – and lower cost. For locations with low gas supply pressure, and for heating equipment with high firing rates, just apply ASCO and watch the advantages stack up.

gy generated to reduce operating costs. Once oxidized in the combustion chamber, the hot purified air releases thermal energy as it passes through the media bed in the outlet flow direction. The outlet bed is heated and the gas is cooled so that the outlet gas temperature is only slightly higher than the process inlet temperature. Poppet valves alternate the airflow direction into the media beds to maximize energy recovery within the oxidizer. The high energy recovery within the oxidizers reduces the auxiliary fuel requirement and saves operating cost. Anguil Environmental Systems (800) 488-0230 • www.anguil.com

Systems, Components & Supplies Hot Water Pumps The company offers a range of hot water pumps for temperatures up to 530°F (277°C) and design pressures up to 1,160 psi. Due to high vapor pressures, standard mechanical seals can not be used for higher temperatures. The easiest solution is a cooled mechanical seal, but the required cooling water has additional cost. An alternative is a standard mechanical seal with a pumping devise and an external air cooler. The cooler is a recent development for this application, and it does not need cooling water. It is self venting. Dickow Pump Co. • Please see our ad on page 20 (800) 880-4442 •

Got Maintenance? Plant operators are finding out the advantages of having their heaters serviced by Heatec on a regular basis. There are important benefits of having a contract for our service technicians to do preventative maintenance once or twice a year. An important benefit is safety. Our technicians make sure all limit devices are working properly. Insurance companies usually prefer that specialists, such as Heatec technicians, perform services related to safety. Fuel savings is another important benefit that results from maintenance that includes tuning the burner. Moreover, preventative maintenance usually eliminates unexpected heater
shutdowns at times that interrupt production. Preventative maintenance can usually be done without adversely affecting production schedules. Another benefit is usually a reduction in costs for each service call. This results from lower travel expenses when our technicians can make service calls at other plants in the same area. Moreover, many of our technicians reside in diverse locations that reduce travel to plant sites. Call today to find out what kind of service contract would work best for you.
